  • READ MORE: Sigur Rós – ‘ÁTTA’ review: their first in a decade is a welcome comeback

The Icelandic trio had previously played with the Wordless Music Orchestra last summer, and now they’ll be linking up again for eight dates across the US. They’ll kick things off in Detroit on September 19 before paying visits to Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Durham, Miami, and Nashville. The final date will take place in Austin on October 4.

The pre-sale will open for fans on March 7 before general sale commences on March 8 – you can see the full list of dates below and buy your tickets here .

Sigur Rós’ 2024 US tour dates are:

SEPTEMBER 19 — Detroit, MI, Masonic Cathedral Theatre 21 — Chicago, IL, Auditorium Theatre 23 — Philadelphia, PA, The Met 25 — Washington DC, Anthem 28 — Durham, NC, DPAC 30 — Miami, FL, Adrienne Arsht Center

The tour is in support of the band’s recent album ‘ÁTTA’, which was released last year and marked their first full-length for a decade.

In October, they followed it up with a special version of the record titled ‘ÁTTA Heimr Edition’.

In a four-star review ,  NME  wrote that ‘ÁTTA’ is “a record that gives Sigur Rós plenty more reason to exist in adding some pure and natural soul to this cold and unfeeling world.”

In July,  Sigur Rós also announced an experimental video series  to go alongside the new album, featuring a video for each track created by different directors.

Holm, who is the band’s bassist,  disclosed earlier this year that he had considered leaving Iceland  after  the band was accused by the Icelandic government  of evading 151m krona (£840,000) of tax between 2010 and 2014. Blaming an accounting error, the band repaid the debt plus interest, but  then faced a second prosecution for the same offence in 2020 , which froze their assets.  They have since been acquitted.

Speaking to  The Guardian , Holm said: “I really did feel like I can’t live in this sort of society. I felt violated, basically. It was a dark period of time for all of us. It was scarring, you know. But then you realise that things just happen and it doesn’t really matter where you are. I have come to the conclusion that I love living in Iceland.”

Recent tour reviews

The show was great, Sigur Rós is a super band. The only problem was the venue (Tempodrom) and organisers, they just don't care about people. First of all, they haven't informed beforehand the fact that it won't be possible to enter the venue with a backpack. Something like storage point was organized in front of the Tempodrome and the queue to it was long. So, in the end, you need to stay in three queues - to leave your backpack, then to enter the Tempodrom and the to leave your coat. But the biggest bummer was that the organizers oversold seat tickets and 10-15% of seat places was actually behind the scene, which is stupid and pissed off quite a lot of people.

Having never heard Sigur Rós before, I went into this show a complete virgin to them. I was actually taking my mother to see them, as she's a big fan, and as I'm predominantly a hard rock/metal head, I was hoping for the best that I wouldn't be bored to tears. It began rather slowly and I thought I might be in for a long night, but by the end of the first half I was "getting it". The second half after the interval just exploded - utterly amazing. Judging by the applause as various songs started, I presume they were playing their more well known songs, but the light and graphics show that went along with the following hour or so was just stunning. What was really good about it was even though I'd never heard them before, and they are rather abstract and unconventional, they were also easy to follow and understand the music being played. Quality wise, they were outstanding - it sounded great, looked great, and the whole production was completely on point. Turned out to be a very enjoyable evening, well worth going.

What should have been a pleasurable evening with friends was spoiled by earth-shattering amplification and mixing that mashed all sounds together into an ear-defeating cacophony.

The vocals were generally screeched out in falsetto with Birgisson's voice developing an unmistakable crackle late in the first half. His attempt to hold a high note in the second half was a study in hubris as he wavered increasingly off-note while the crowd - clearly never having witnessed your average classical vocal performance - went into enraptured hysteria.

The musical disappointment was somewhat offset by the interesting, though by no means groundbreaking, visuals and we couldn't help wondering whether the crowd were applauding that rather than the noise. Or perhaps they were sufficiently tanked up with opioids to deaden their senses.

What a shame and embarrassment when introducing some friends to this band. I kept having to assure them that I wasn't crazy and that Sigur Ros do normally have a really interesting sound.

The constant stream of people escaping the auditorium confirms we weren't alone in our assessment.

Sigur Ros Are Working on a New Album and Getting Ready to Tour the World

By Kat Bouza

Sigur Rós will hit the road this summer for their first world tour in nearly five years, with shows currently slated for the United States, Canada and Mexico. The influential Icelandic band also announced that they’ve returned to the studio to record a new full-length album — and both the album and tour will feature the Kjartan Sveinsson, who recently rejoined Sigur Rós after leaving the group nearly a decade ago.

The post-rock outfit promises to debut some new material during the upcoming tour, which kicks off April 30 at Festival Vaivén in Morelos, Mexico. The run will continue through May before wrapping with two shows at the Beacon Theatre in New York City, June 17 and 18.

Tickets for the U.S. and Canada shows go on sale Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. local time, while the Mexico shows will go on sale at 11 a.m. Feb. 26. Additional tour dates to be announced at a later date. More information can be found on the band’s website .

The album. meanwhile, will mark the first proper Sigur Rós studio effort since 2013’s Kveikur . In 2020, the group released Odin’s Raven Magic , an orchestral piece based off a 13th century Icelandic poem — but the composition was first performed nearly two decades prior to its official release, and the 2020 version came from a recording of a 2004 performance at La Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris.

Sigur Rós

Since 2022, Sigur Rós have established orchestral accompaniment as their standard method of touring. Reuniting with keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson, the members played alongside full orchestras in grand concert halls across Europe and North America. The band enlisted the Wordless Music Orchestra for their Stateside dates, where they performed new material as well as favorites from their extensive catalog. Described as “an articulation of beauty almost beyond comprehension” (Dallas Observer), the performances are simultaneously as expressive and indescribable as Hopelandic, all a testament to the timeless pull of Sigur Rós.

The new tour comes in the wake of a fruitful era for the band’s fans. At the start of the new decade, the band dove deep into their archives for long-anticipated works. They first released Odin’s Raven Magic (2020), an orchestral album originally made nearly two decades prior, and later reissued ( ) for its 20th anniversary in 2022. Their first collection of new material in nearly a decade, ÁTTA (2023) leans heavily towards the orchestral, featuring contributions from the London Contemporary Orchestra. With close to ten million albums sold, Sigur Rós stands as one of the most ambitious and acclaimed bands of recent times, whose new artistic endeavors only points towards an expansive, exciting future.
