Rebranding the world’s biggest ski trip

Around this time last year I was asked to be on the committee for an event called Varsity Trip 2018, as the Design Director. In the following post I explain what I did over the course of year, between February and December 2018.

What is Varsity Trip? #

Varsity Trip is the world’s largest student snowsports trip. Students from Oxford and Cambridge go skiing or snowboarding for the week after the first term of the year ends. The first trip was in 1922, meaning that the trip is older than the Winter Olympics, and is rapidly approaching its hundredth anniversary.

In recent years, the trip has been so big that only two ski resorts (Tignes and Val Thorens) fulfil the requirements of: (i) having enough space to fit everyone, (ii) having enough snow in the first week of December to ski, and (iii) being close enough to the UK to get to affordably.

The 2018 trip had over 3000 participants, and the organising committee dealt with something something figure revenue turnover. In tandem with our 9 person student committee, a snowsports company called NUCO handled logistics to do with lessons, accommodation and transport.

Because the trip is so big, every student in Oxford and Cambridge already knows about it. This means that the trip undergoes a rebrand every year — it keeps the name Varsity Trip , but gets a new logo and style of design.

The previous years’ brands had used a variety of style. You can see these below:

We designed a new logo that kept the motif of having three mountain peaks, and picked a new two-colour palette of a navy blue and burnt orange that made the logo feel much brighter. Feedback from previous years were that the logo hadn’t been versatile enough (it gets used in a huge range of printed material, online content and videos and apparel) so I designed multiple versions that could be used flexibly by the whole committee as necessary.

I also created an animated version, making use of the excellent animated typeface League Spartan Animated from Animography.net . This was used in video marketing, the pre and post trip videos, and the VT short film.

In the last ten years, previous committees have used a variety of fonts. These included fonts that had been commissioned (e.g. Bebas VT and Times New Snowman) as well as other free fonts. The 2017 trip used a condensed bold version of Tw Cen MT for headings. I chose to replace this with League Spartan , as it has better kerning, a wider range of letter support, and an animated version. For the body font we used Google’s open-source slab serif, Roboto Slab.

Our team also opted for a cleaner approach than previous years, primarily making use of a bright orange to complement the navy blue . We made extensive use of bold, sans-serif fonts, flat vector illustration and bright colours, to move the brand away from the murkier green and blue colours and the texture-heavy sketchy style of previous years.

I was incredibly excited (as every designer surely is) to design things that would become physical, tangible products. There was a lot of this on Varsity Trip. Some of the apparel and merch that I designed includes:

  • Sweatshirts
  • Tracksuit bottoms
  • Jacquard-knit jumpers
  • Neck-warmers
  • Sports bras
  • Reusable coffee cups
  • Bike seat covers
  • Foam fingers
  • Racers’ medals
  • Playing cards

Some of these items were for promotional giveaways, but many were for sale to students going on the trip (‘stash’). We decided on which items to sell based on what was popular in previous trips (derived from sales numbers) and the profit margins of the raws items themselves. We also experimented with new items: fleeces, ski socks, and Christmas jumpers.

Stash sale numbers were incredible: we sold over 700 sweatshirts and over 400 caps and beanies.

Because so many people wear stash, it needed to be on-brand, but also subtle and tasteful, but also not bland. I purposely designed things that were minimal and kept .

To produce everything, we worked closely with:

  • an outdoor clothing company (Silverstick)
  • the production company that helped deliver the trip’s festival-scale club nights (Zero Degrees Events)
  • the ski trip fulfilment company (NUCO)
  • the resort’s tourist office (Club Val Thorens)

Here are some of the mockups of stash:

And some of the model shots:

Illustration #

Across the project, I created a set of vector illustrations. Each could be split into components and re-used across a wide range of media.

Lots of these were used for online social media posts; examples of these are below:

These illustrations were also used in some of the physical items I designed, such as in welcome booklets, sound-stage banners and accommodation signs in resort.

Learnings #

The sheer quantity of designed elements that needed to feel cohesive meant that I very quickly learnt to design efficiently and re-use elements where possible.

All the illustrations I designed could be split into layers, allowing them to be reused throughout in different combinations, so as to always feel original. I also created templates in Photoshop so other members of the committee could make announcement posts on Facebook that still felt on-brand, and meant that I didn’t have to do it all.

Designing for Varsity Trip was a lot of work, but it was also a huge honour.

Rocking up to the Alps in December to see 15ft banners with my illustrations, covering the speakers of a huge outdoor stage, and then a day later have over 3000 students arrive wearing t-shirts I’d designed, was pretty magical.

Varsity Trip is the annual ski and snowboard trip organised by, and for, Oxbridge students. Founded in 1922 to facilitate the blues ski races between Oxford and Cambridge University, the event has become the largest student run snowsports event in the world. Taking around 3000 students to the Alps, Varsity Trip has become more than the average ski trip. Known for its festival style parties and on the mountain après-ski, Varsity Trip has held host to a number of internationally renowned acts including Basement Jaxx, DJ Fresh, and Calvin Harris. Skiers and snowboarders of all levels attend the trip with up to a third of participants being complete beginners. In recent years the destinations of the trip have included Val Thorens and Tignes. Varsity Trip gives the opportunity to attend an incredible week of snowsports, competitions and events, all at student prices.

Varsity Ski Trip: access or elitism?

Romilly Norfolk discusses how the Varsity Ski Trip pretends to be affordable, while being ambiguous about the real cost for the average person

Michaelmas brings colder weather and the reminder that winter is coming. For some that means wet weather and a Christmas dinner, for others that means ski season. At this university, and our friends in the Other Place, the Varsity Trip offers the opportunity for people to go on a pre-organised skiing trip. The selling point is that the trip is at “student prices” but with the base price (including coach travel) being £558 without add-ons, what types of students are they really aiming this trip at? The answer is those who can afford to splash the cash.

The largest issue with the ski trip is really an issue with skiing holidays in general: those who are less privileged (and thus less likely to have gone skiing before) will always end up paying more. This is because those who don’t ski much will have to rent ski gear, this goes beyond skis, boots and poles, and can include coats, gloves, helmets, and goggles. Renting skis, poles, boots and a helmet will cost one person £115 for the week, and that’s only the basic supplies.

“I have to admit, the trip provides a lot of this rented gear at a lower price than if you were to do it privately”

Ski clothing is also recommended on the cold slopes; it might be good for some who have a North Face lying around but for many a college puffer isn’t going to cut it. Renting is again the far cheaper option but even just a set of gloves, a coat and skiing trousers will put you back about £65 for the week. This doesn’t even include the several layers you’ll need underneath all that and the fetching goggles you’ll be sporting all week. The trip provides a lot of this rented gear at a lower price than if you were to do it privately, but it’s still not cheap.

Now what if you’ve never skied before? Fear not, you can also get lessons when you’re on the trip. Six hours of beginner lessons last year would put you back about £150. So you better hope you’re a fast learner or have some patient friends who can ski and are willing to teach you.

“What the trip really profits off of is all the extras you may feel pressured to indulge in”

These are only the charges you’ll need to incur if you’re a newbie to the slopes. What the trip really profits off of is all the extras you may feel pressured to indulge in. Accommodation is provided in the base price of a ticket, but with apartments varying in capacity from six to 16, many choose to upgrade. Their website boasts that the upgraded accommodation sells out fast and you can see why. Even in the typical four to six person apartments, people will have to sleep in alcoves with bunk beds, share doubles or draw the short straw and kip on the sofa bed. Upgrades will either cost an extra £79 or £149 if you want the even nicer option (no sofa bed for you).

If you think the Varsity Ski Trip is all about skiing you are sorely mistaken. Any person who has had the unfortunate experience of being a member of Ticketbridge during the trip knows it’s also about the events. Every single night of the trip there is a night-time event, from the classics of a silent disco to the fun of skiing back down from Mega Après, you can certainly fill your evening calendar. These events can cost you from as little as £6 to £35 (based on last year’s prices) depending on the event. More extras which you don’t need but you might feel a little left out from if you don’t join in.

Now let’s not forget the most important extra: food. The trip provides vouchers and discounts in some restaurants in the resort but for those trying to work on a budget this may not be the best option. The Varsity trip website says: “If you are cooking for yourself most days, having bought ingredients in the out of town supermarket or from home, [budgeting for meals] can be done quite cheaply.” But the notion of bringing a week’s worth of food from home to cook for yourself is a little far-fetched, and the website gives no indication of the distance or cost of the “out of town supermarket”.

“You’ve never skied before? That’s another £150”

So the lure of a £349 base price ticket quickly spirals up. An extra £209 for the 20 hour coach there and back (you could spend an extra £100 and fly instead). And now you’re at the higher base price of £558 that we started this article on. But let’s assume your part of the normal portion of the population that doesn’t own ski equipment and clothing, that’s another £180. Some extra layers will put you back another £80, for spares in your base layers and some mid-layers. You’ve never skied before? That’s another £150. Let’s assume you and all your mates are okay bunking up and you don’t upgrade your accommodation. Now we will add two night-time events just to add a little fun and call that £15. We will also guess that you are very strict on your budgeting and will cook all your meals, let’s budget £50 for that shop (obviously including the cheapest alcohol you can get because we all know pre-ing is the ultimate budget activity). So your bargain £500 skiing trip is now looking at being over a grand.

Tokyo Travels – A Review of Cambridge Athletic’s Trip to the Japanese Capital

The Varsity Trip, at least to me, is often painted as an easy, affordable and accessible way to go skiing, but it lacks so much transparency about the actual cost of it all. Many don’t realise how much the trip is going to cost them until they’re speeding through their 30-minute booking slot and seeing the price rack up.

Now the trip does provide a cheaper skiing holiday, especially for the popular resorts the trip frequents. When a lift pass alone for the week in Tignes costs over £230, you can see why the base price is already so much. But if you really want to go on a cheap skiing holiday with your friends, you’re probably just as well off just choosing a cheaper resort and organising it yourself. And if you do that, you won’t have to deal with Oxf*rd students either.

All in all, many find the trip fun, and I’m sure it is. But I think it shouldn’t try to pretend it’s not any different from a normal skiing holiday, only for those with too much disposable income.

Alternatively, if you want to make any changes after having paid the deposit then contact you can also contact NUCO on [email protected] or message them within the app and they will try and accommodate the change you would like.
  • Do I pay for the whole trip on booking day? On booking day you will be required to pay a £150 deposit in order to confirm your place. The full payment deadline will be 1 week after booking day.
  • What does the base price cover? Included in the base price is your lift pass, accommodation, booking day t-shirt and access to exclusive events.
  • Do I need insurance? What does the insurance cover? You will not be able to participate on the trip unless you have travel insurance. This can be bought through the booking platform, which we strongly recommend. If you would like to book your own insurance then make sure to check what it covers carefully and update your booking form accordingly. You will be required to input your policy number.
  • Can my non-Oxford/Cambridge friends book onto the trip? Yes, non-Oxbridge individuals can book onto the trip and they follow the same process as Oxbridge students. The only difference is that they select ‘guest’ instead of Oxford or Cambridge on the booking form.

  • I can no longer go on the trip, can I get a refund? If cancelling your ticket before final payment deadline you will receive a full refund EXCEPT for your initial deposit . After that, if you are unable to find a replacement but need to cancel, cancellation charges will apply.
  • How much is the trip? The total cost of the trip varies from person to person. Base price this year is £349 without coach travel or £558 with coach travel. On top of this will be rentals and events to added on if these are required which will influence the end cost.
  • How do I determine what size I need? Similar to previous years, we will be scanning everyone’s feet. We will email out the times and dates once confirmed.
  • Can I rent a snowboard? Along with ski hire, there will be an option to rent a snowboard on the booking form.
  • When and where do we collect our ski hire? You will be allocated a ski shop from which to collect your gear and also a collection time. The collection time will either be on Saturday afternoon/evening or Sunday morning depending on what time you arrive in the resort.
  • What’s the difference between standards of skis? The higher the standard of ski hire, the more technical the equipment will be.
  • Do I need a helmet? Yes, you can rent one via the booking form.
  • Can I bring my own boots? You can bring your own boots; however, you will need to fit them in your luggage as you cannot bring an additional hold bag.
  • Do I need ski insurance? What happens if I damage my skis? We recommend getting ski insurance and this will be offered to you when collecting your skis. If you damage your skis you will need to return them to the ski-hire shop and see what they say. Ask a NUCO rep or a french speaker to go with you so that you can communicate effectively.
  • Can I exchange my ski boots if they don’t fit? If your ski boots are uncomfortable and do not fit then take them back to the ski-shop you got them from and they will exchange them for you.
  • Does ski hire include poles? Yes, ski hire includes poles.
  • Do I need lessons? If you are a beginner or do not feel comfortable getting on a chair lift and skiing down a gentle blue run then we would recommend that you get lessons. However, lessons aren’t only for beginners and any level of skier could benefit from them.
  • Will me and my friends be in the same class? If you have chosen lessons from the same level then it is possible, but if it turns out that you are not then we may be able to arrange for you to switch groups. Contact NUCO on [email protected] or message them within the app for more information.
  • When are the lessons? Lessons are 2 hours long and take place in both the morning and afternoon.
  • When trials take place? Trials take place on the Monday of the trip. If you ask your NUCO room rep they will be able to provide more information.
  • Can I join the race training? If you haven’t booked on the racers’ package then you haven’t paid for the race level of training and so cannot join the training.
  • Can I race? The Varsity Trip was founded around ski racing and so there is an opportunity for everyone to race should they wish. To race for your university sign up for the trials on Sunday, which take place on Monday. If you want a more relaxed chance to race then you can enter a team from your college for Cuppers. • How much should I budget for meals for the week? This varies a lot depending on how much you bring from home and how frequently you eat out. If you are cooking for yourself most days, having bought ingredients in the out of town supermarket or from home, it can be done quite cheaply.
  • Does the coach stop at a supermarket before we get to the resort? Coaches will try to stop at the supermarket around one hour before reaching resort, however, this will not always be possible due to supermarket opening/ closing times.
