Estadio Benito Villamarín: Visit the Real Betis Balompié stadium

benito villamarin

The Benito Villamarín hosts the home matches of Real Betis Balompié.

Are you planning to attend a Betis match? Make sure to get your Real Betis tickets well in advance! Here’s a complete guide to do so, in case you need it. If you’re interested in the current season, check the official dates to see if any of these fits your itinerary.

Table of Contents

The history behind the Estadio Benito Villamarín

The stadium was inaugurated in 1929, but was thoroughly renovated in 1982 to host two matches of that year’s UEFA World Cup, in 2000, and in 2017. It has a capacity of 60,700 people.

The Real Betis Balompié, popularly known as Betis, was founded in 1907. It is, along with the Sevilla Fútbol Club, one of Seville football clubs. The rivalry between both is quite fierce and the city is divided in half between Sevilla and Betis fans.

Probably one of the best supporters in Europe, ‘Béticos’ are the most intensive and loyal supporters of the Spanish League. Fans generally dance and sing theme songs and chants during the whole match, and they do so whether the team is winning or losing, whether it’s raining or under an unbearable heat. It is absolutely impressive.

Few fans are noisier, more numerous, more loyal or funnier than Betis’. In fact, Betis is defined by a famous phrase binding pride and identity. Always written wrong according to the Andalusian accent, thousands shout “¡Viva er Betis manquepierda!” (Long live Betis, even if they lose!).

Betis supporters always enjoy themselves. Even if they lose. Join them.

How to buy Real Betis tickets

The easiest way to get your Real Betis tickets is buying them online .

The purchasing process is very easy, but here’s a complete guide on how to buy Real Betis tickets in case you need it.

Here are the steps you should follow:

1. Start by checking the official calendar of matches and look for the dates when Real Betis Balompié plays home. Note that the final date and time of the match are confirmed only a few days before.

One more thing, the match usually takes place on a Saturday or Sunday, although La Liga also takes place on Fridays and Mondays. If the calendar obliges, matches may take place on other days of the week.

2. Next, pick the area of the Benito Villamarín where you would like to seat. A seating chart will help you choose the one that will suit you best.

3. Final step: complete the purchasing process. Double check your personal details, particularly your email address to get your purchase confirmation email.

Purchase your tickets! No more waiting lines.

How to get to the Benito Villamarín stadium

Being relatively far away from the city center (around 3.5 km or 2.2 mi from the Cathedral ), it is not advisable to go there by foot.

Actually, the best way to get there is to catch a bus (lines 1, 2, 3 or 34). If your accommodation is located in the city center, just go to the Prado transport gateway and catch a line 1 or 37 bus. Both take you right to the stadium.

Have a look at the Tussam bus map for more information. The stadium is located in the C2 square.

Alternatively, you can catch a taxi. But before doing so, make sure you check the itinerary from your accommodation to the Benito Villamarín stadium and you have printed some basic directions. Doing so you can avoid potential scams from the driver, the main one being a ride following a longer route.

However, plan your transport ahead of time. Betis matches are extremely popular and it can be very difficult to reach the stadium as the match time approaches. It’s better waiting a bit longer at your seat for the match to begin than missing part of the action!

How to experience the ‘Betis Tour’

The Betis Tour walks you through the most emblematic areas of the Benito Villamarín stadium. Visit the home team changing room, the press room, and the players’ tunnel. Additionally, you can access to different areas of the stadium, including the field grass and the radio box.

Book the ‘Betis Tour’ online and feel like a true Real Betis player!

Here are a few simple instructions to guide you through the booking process.

1. Go to the official Real Betis balompié website .

2. Then, look for an green button stating Ver disponisibilidad and click on it.

3. Select the date and time you’d like to visit the stadium.

4. Select the number of ticket you’d like to buy (adult, child).

5. Click on the green button COMPRAR .

6. Fill up your personal information. Make sure there are no typos on your email address as you’ll receive a PDF file with the tickets there.

7. Click on the green button PAGAR .

8. Fill up your travel money card information and complete the purchase.

Estadio Benito Villamarín

Estadio Benito Villamarin

Club: Real Betis Balompié | Opening: 1929 | Capacity: 60,721 seats

History and description

Estadio Benito Villamarín was built in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exposition that was held in Seville that year. The first football played at the stadium was an international between Spain an Portugal on 17 March 1929.

Soon after, Betis started playing occasional home matches at the stadium, though Campo del Patronato remained their regular home until 1936.

The stadium went initially by the name of Estadio de Heliópolis, was rectangularly shaped, and could hold about 18,000 sepectators.

Due to its close proximity to the river Guadalquivir, the stadium got heavily damaged in a flood in 1948.

Estadio de Heliópolis underwent a first redevelopment in 1958, and got bought by the club in 1961. The stadium remained rather modest though, and few changes were made until the 1970s.

The then-renamed Estadio Benito Villamarin underwent several small redevelopments in the 1970s, but only got properly developed with the perspective of the 1982 World Cup. It could then hold about 47,500 spectators.

During the World Cup, the stadium hosted two first round group matches.

Estadio Benito Villamarin remained pretty much the same until Betis in 1998 decided to almost completely rebuilt the stadium. New three-tiered stands were built on the north and eastern sides of the stadium, which complemented the already three-tiered West Stand.

At the same time, the stadium was renamed Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, after the then-owner of the club. Works, however, stalled after that and the remaining single-tiered South Stand was left single-tiered, nor were any roofs installed.

After Ruiz de Lopera had left the club in 2010, fans voted to reinstall the old name Estadio Benito Villamarin.

In 2015, the decision was made to tear down the single-tiered South Stand and replace it with a new three-tiered stand in line with the rest of the stadium. Works started in the summer of 2016 and were completed in the summer of 2017, raising capacity to just over 60,000 seats.

How to get to Estadio Benito Villamarin

Estadio Benito Villamarin is located in the south of the city of Seville, about 3 kilometres from the historic city centre.

The stadium lies on the Avenida la Palmera, a large avenue which connects the stadium in one straight line with the centre. Around the city centre, the avenue – though with a different name – runs along the bank of the river Guadalquivir.

The stadium can be reached with bus 1, 2, 6, 34 and 37.

From the southern edge of the city centre (Prado de San Sebastián), catch bus 1 (to Glorieta Plus Ultra), 34 (to Los Bermejales), or 37 (to Bellvista).

From the bus station in the west of the centre, take bus 6 to Glorieta Heliopolis. The bus runs (partly) over the west bank of the river.

From the northern edge of the centre and eastern parts of the city you can catch bus 2 to Glorieta Heliopolis.

There is no direct bus connection from Seville’s central rail station to the stadium, but bus 1 passes about 500 metres west of the station and bus 2 about 1 kilometres north-east of the station.

All buses have very frequent service. Bus 1, 2, and 6 have their last stop near the stadium.

Address: Avda. de la Palmera s/n, 41012 Sevilla

Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Benito Villamarin

Estadio Benito Villamarin is located in a quiet residential area. There is the odd bar and restaurant around, mostly in the area toward the river, but you are likely better off eating and drinking in Seville’s historic centre.

There are a few hotels hotels around Estadio Benito Villamarin. Hotel Silken Al-Andalus Palace is located 200 metres from the stadium, gets good reviews, and is reasonably priced. Boutique Hotel Holos is a little more expensive, while Hotel Sevilla Palmero is somewhat further away, though still easily at walking distance.

If you have more money to spend, then Villa de la Palmera will likely be your pick, and hostel Albergue Interjoven is for those on a tight budget. For all hotels near Estadio Benito Villamarin click here .

Of course, if you spend more a day in Seville, staying in the historic centre may be more interesting. You can find the options here .

Real Betis Tickets

Tickets for Real Betis games can be bought at the ticket windows (taquillas) of the stadium in the week before the match (closed between 2:00pm and 5:00pm).

Tickets are also available on the day of the match before kickoff. Real Betis’ attendances have been among the highest in La Liga though the club have tended to sell out few games. However, following the expansion of the stadium in 2017 demand has further surged so buying in advance is recommended.

Ticket prices generally start at €30.00 for an upper-tier seat behind the goal and range up to €60.00 for a central seat at the main stand, though prices can be increased for high-profile fixtures.

Attended the Betis v Barcelona game this past season, the tickets are very easy to buy on Betis’ official website. About a 10-15 min Uber if you’re staying in the Triana district. Don’t make the same mistake as me, there is no alcohol served inside the stadium so enjoy the convenience of a small beer shack selling cans of beer for 2 euros right in front of the stadium. Amazing atmosphere, definitely recommend!

The Estadio Benito Villamarin is the home stadium of La Liga side Real Betis, located in Seville, Spain. The ground first opened in 1929, and has undone two major renovations since in 1982, and in 2000, with the capacity now standing at 52,500.

Real Betis Stadium Guide

Estadio benito villamarín history.

Estadio Benito Villamarín first opened on 17th March 1929 with an inaugural match between Spain and Portugal which saw the hosts humiliate their neighbours with a 5-nil thrashing. Designed by a team of architects, Antonio, González and Cordón who also lent a hand to the 1913 San Mamés , Real Betis became full-time residents on the 16th July 1936 after previously playing matches at both Campo del Patronato and Benito Vllamarín.

Originally known as Estadio de Heliópolis, the new stadium was one of the most modern sports facilities in Spain at the time. The name Estadio Benito Villamarín only came into existence in the 1970s to coincide with a series of redevelopments, however it was later changed to Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera in 2010. Lasting 10 years in total, Real Betis reverted back to the old name in 2010 after membership vote after the president had departed.

Benito Villamarín has undergone several renovations since opening including restoration in 1948 after sustaining flood damage when the river Guadalquivir’s bank’s burst. The most notable reconstruction came in the years leading up to the 1982 World Cup, which saw Betis’ stadium transform into a large outdoor arena capable of seating 47,500 supporters.

Selected as one of fifteen host venues, and one of two in Sevilla along with Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán , Estadio Benito Villamarín hosted two matches in total: Brazil v Scotland (4-1), and Brazil v New Zealand (4-0). The stadium has also hosted high-level European matches including Champions League group stages during the 2005/2006 season where Betis were drawn against Liverpool , Chelsea and Anderlecht .

As for the future of Estadio Benito Villamarin there are no current plans to renovate or to relocate Real Betis to new facilities. The stadium was completely rebuilt in the late 1990s as an all-seater to comply with updated UEFA stadium regulations, and thus is actually fairly modern.

How to get to Estadio Benito Villamarín

Where is estadio benito villamarín.

As Real Betis’ ground is located further south than Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán you could argue that it is in a better location, at least for driving anyway.

All you have to do is look for Exit 8 signposted Sevilla / Avenue La Palmera and follow this until the stadium pops up towards your left.

Satnav Address:

  • Avda. de la Palmera s/n, 41012 Sevilla

Train - Public Transport

The main train station in Seville is Santa Justa which is centrally placed and around 5km north of Estadio Ramón Sánchez. It’s a bit too far to walk in my professional opinion but the bus services more than make up for it with numerous stops along avenue de Kansas City which runs parallel to the railway tracks on the Southern side.

Aeropuerto de Sevilla is the main airport for Seville and is approximately 15km North East from the Benito Villamarín stadium.

Known as a purveyor of low-cost airlines, Seville Airport has frequent bus services which can take you to Plaza de Arma which is basically the city centre in 50 minutes for €4,00 which makes transferring over to your hotel pretty painless. Of course, there is always a Taxi.

Hotels Near Estadio Benito Villamarín

The closest hotels to Estadio Benito Villamarín are either Villa De La Palmera on the North corner of the roads which surround the stadium or the much larger Silken Al-Andalus Palace which is pretty cheap with decent reviews.

If you want something much more central and closer to the station then I recommend either Ayre Hotel Sevilla, Hotel Abanico, or Hotel Adriano as the wildcard expensive option. Do your own research!

Benito Villamarin Stadium

What’s the Benito Villamarin Stadium like?

The Benito Villamarin ground has four sections which are not very distinct. This is in line with the European style of football grounds. While the north, east, and west sections of the ground are able to possess three tiers of seating, the South stand only has a single tier. This would be the obvious feature of the ground, which does not have protection against the elements for the most part apart from a small section of the west stand.

What is it like for visiting supporters?

The southern section will be the place where away supporters are housed. Benito Villamarin provides a decent list of facilities for supporters who come to the ground. Since it is located in a key part of the Seville region, there are plenty of activities to do. The food bars and pubs are also in good numbers. For those trying to take a guided tour of the ground, it is also convenient that the ground of archrivals Sevilla is also quite close by.

How to get there by car & Where to park?

The location of Benito Villamarin is very accessible by car, as it is just a few kilometres to the south of Seville. The stadium is connected to the centre through the Avenida la Palmera. For those striving to the ground, they have to look for the exit 8 on this road. This will directly lead them onto the stadium, which will be on the left side when going from Sevilla to the Avenida la Palmera.

The satnav address for the ground would be: Avda. de la Palmera s/n, 41012 Sevilla

The car park at the ground has space for 200 cars and it can be rented out by members travelling on match days.

By train or metro

The Real Betis Stadium can be reached via metro services. The Santa Justa metro station in Seville is located in a central position between this ground and the Estadio Ramón Sánchez. Thus, around 30 minutes of walk will be enough to get around to this ground. If this is a little too much, one can hop on to the several bus services that connect to the stadium. There are several bus stops along the Avenida la Palmera.

Ticket Prices

The price of tickets to watch Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin will range from €30-€60 depending on the location. The upper seats behind the goal are the cheapest while the central seats in the main grandstand will be the most expensive. The prices also tend to see an increase for the high-profile games.

The ticket can be bought at the stadium or online. Depending on the availability, the stadium will sell the tickets even on the day of the game. Real Betis have one of the highest attendance figures in the La Liga, but the large capacity of the stadium means that there will always be an opportunity to get tickets even on the day of the game. Still, it is recommended to buy in advance.

Benito Villamarin Stadium Tours

Real Betis organises a stadium tour of Benito Villamarin as an opportunity for fans to soak in the 75+ years of history enjoyed by the club. The tour of the ground and its various facilities is handled by a guide. The visitors get access to the presidential box, press room, trophy room, Wall of Fame, dressing room, pitch, tunnel, and much more. The club shop can also be accessed through the car park. The price for the stadium tour is set at €10 for non-members and €6 for the members/season ticket holders. There are concessions available for children and students. The tour is open throughout the year at various timings.

Ground Information

Today the 52,000-capacity Benito Villamarín comprises the Gol Sur (Grada Joven/Juvenil) and Gol Norte (Grada Alta/Baja), a three-tier main Preferencia and the Fondo opposite, each with a Grada Baja nearest the pitch and the Anfiteatro above. The Voladizo is higher still. Away fans are high up in a corner between the Gol Norte and the Fondo.

Estadio Benito Villamarin is located in a quiet residential area. There is the odd bar and restaurant around, mostly in the area toward the river, but you are likely better off eating and drinking in Seville’s historic centre.

Car Parks & Public transport

Estadio Benito Villamarín was built in the Southern part of the city, approximately 3.5km away from what constitutes the “old” city centre. From the city centre the walk to the stadium is easy, all you must do is follow the long stretch of road which runs besides the canal until you get to the stadium.

As Real Betis’ ground is located further south than Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán you could argue that it is in a better location, at least for driving anyway. All you must do is look for Exit 8 signposted Sevilla / Avenue La Palmera and follow this until the stadium pops up towards your left.

Real Betis Stadium Tour and Football Breaks

In 1907 Sevilla Balompié was formed by students from the Escuela Politéchnica. A breakaway group from the older Sevilla FC formed a new club which they called Betis Football Club. This club merged with Sevilla Balompié in 1914 and was given royal patronage by King Don Alfonso XIII – becoming Real Betis Balompié. At that time Betis were playing in a set of green and black striped shirts given to them by Glasgow Celtic, which was later changed to the green and white of the Andalucía flag.

Table of Contents

In recent times Real Betis haven’t experienced the same success as their illustrious neighbours Seville FC who have won six Europa League titles . However, support for Los Verdiblancos remains as passionate as ever. They did win the league way back in 1935 and captured the Copa del Rey in 1977. Since then they have appeared in the final of that competition twice, losing to Barcelona in 1997 and beating Osasuna to win the trophy in the 2004-05 season.

The word ‘Balompié’ is a variation of the literal Spanish translation of the word ‘football’. The name ‘Betis’ is derived from word ‘Baetis’ which was the Roman name for Seville’s Guadalquivir River.

Seville Derby: The very first Seville derby between Real Betis and Sevilla FC took place in 1915, with Sevilla winning 4-3. Over the years this has proven to be one of the country’s most fiercely fought rivalries. Traditionally, Betis have always been seen as attracting their support from the working classes whilst Sevilla have had more aristocratic associations. This intense rivalry has at times spilt over into violent affairs but fortunately recent matches have been played in a resonably sporting atmosphere.

Real Betis Stadium

Real Betis play at the 60,720 seater Estadio Benito Villamarín in Seville which is one of the most passionate places to watch La Liga football in Spain. The stadium had been renamed Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera in 1997 after the then-president of the club. However, in 2010 the Betis fans voted to again name the stadium Benito Villamarín in honour of the president who served the club from 1955 to 1965.

Getting There: Estadio Benito Villamarín lies on Avenida la Palmera, approximately 3km south of the historic centre of Seville, about 3 kilometres from the historic city centre. It’s a pleasant walk to get there which takes about 45 minutes from the centre. Buses #1 and 34 from the main Prado Bus Station run to the stadium. Other lines including #2, #6 and #37 stop near the stadium. Of course there are plenty taxis to take you to the stadium.

If you’d like to really travel in style you should hire a horse-drawn carriage to the match from near the Cathedral. I’ll never forget the site of hundreds of Liverpool fans heading up to the Real Betis stadium a few years ago for a Champions League clash travelling in these carriages.

Real betis tickets.

Real Betis tickets for most games at the Estadio Benito Villamarín can be purchased at the stadium’s ticket windows (taquillas) behind the South Stand (Gol Sur). These ticket windows are open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm. Tickets go on sale in the days leading up to the match and are usually available on matchdays.

It’s also worth checking the official Real Betis website as an online ticketing service has been in operation in recent seasons. Customers can print out an e-ticket which they receive by email. Some games against FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla FC may sell out so advanced purchase is recommended.

History of Real Betis Balompié

Betis joined La Liga in the 1932-33 season and were immediately successful, winning the title in 1935 under Irish coach Patrick O’Connell. Unfortunately for Los Béticos, they have never been able to repeat the feat in the subsequent years.

Real Betis were unable to keep their league-winning team together due to desperate economic times tied in with the Spanish Civil War which forced the suspension of la Liga. When the league returned for the 1939-40 season Betis were immediately relegated and fell into the footballing wilderness which saw them slip to the third tier of Spanish football in 1947. During this dark period Betis still saw full stadiums for home games and a large following at away matches. It was 1954 before they returned to Second Division.

In 1955 the loyal chairman, Manuel Ruiz Rodríguez, who had helped steer Betis back to the 2nd tier of Spanish football was succeeded by Benito Villamarín. The new president led Betis back to the promised land of the first division in 1958–59 and bought the Estadio Heliópolis in 1961 which was named after him and remains so to this day. In 1966, just one year after Benito Villamarín stepped down from his post as club president, Betis were again relegated and spent five of the next eight seasons in the second division.

The 1974–75 season was pivotal in the history of Real Betis as it marked the season when the club established itself as a top tier football club. There have been six relegations since that year including the most recent in 2014 but are not quite the yo-yo club that they once were.

Real Betis in the 21st Century

In that 2004-05 season under Serra Ferrer, when Betis last won the Copa del Rey, they finished 4th in La Liga and qualified for the Champions League. This made them the first ever Andalucian team to do so although Sevilla FC and Malaga CF would follow suit in later years.. They made it to the group stage in which they beat Chelsea on a great European night in Seville but couldn’t progress any further.

Having stared relegation in the face on a number of occasions they finally succumbed at the end of the 2008–09 season. The club president, Manuel Ruiz de Lopera, was involved in an ongoing fraud saga that eventually culminated in popular ex-player Rafael Gordillo becoming the new president. After two seasons outside Spain’s top flight, Betis returned to La Liga in the 2011–12 season. They also returned to European competition in 2013-14, qualifying for the Europa League in which they suffered a painful quarter-final defeat on penalties to Sevilla FC. They were also relegated for a single season.

After a disappointing 15th place finish in the 2019-20 season, Betis began the following season with 39 year old Joaquín Sánchez Rodríguez as captain. he played his first game for Betis in the year 2000 then after six seasons moved on to Valencia, Malaga and Fiorentina before returning to Betis in 2015. Joaquín is a legend of a player who played 51 times for Spain and holds the recored for the most appearances in the history of Real Betis.

An iconic stadium in new apparel

Estadio Benito Villamarín acquired its current form as a result of the 2016-17 redevelopment, when the new south stand was finally built. The structure, with three main auditorium levels and VIP boxes, raised the stadium's capacity to more than 60,000. The venue lived to see the auditorium enclosed, as well as a complete replacement of the seats, floodlights and sound system. Now the Real Betis authorities have unveiled new plans to modernise the arena.

In an international architectural competition for the design of the Estadio Benito Villamarín redevelopment, the winning concept was that of Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoza and American studio Gensler .  In the initial phase, the club received 30 proposals, 11 national and 19 international, seven of which, after submitting the required documentation, reached the final phase in May. The winners will develop a project that is crucial to the club's growth and that will transform the house of Béticos into one of the leading football facilities at national level and a new symbol of the city of Seville.

The revamped facility will increase Real Betis' revenues thanks to a new concept that includes an arena that is open and modern, allowing the club to increase its commercial activities throughout the year through various high-quality spaces. The project will expand the offer of entertainment and hospitality on match days, before, during and after matches and on non-sporting days.

What does Estadio Benito Villamarín redevelopment involve?

The stadium, despite the conceptual changes, will retain the essence and spirit of Real Betis and its supporters, providing a special place for history through the improvement and expansion of the club museum and a new format for tours of the facility. The atmosphere in the stands, the experience and the comfort of fans will be improved by increasing the number of facilities services at the venue. The stadium will become a major centre for entertainment and events, with an auditorium of 450 seats, as well as an important tourist destination in the city.

The new Estadio Benito Villamarín will be able to accommodate 60,379 spectators. The current Preferencia (west) stand will be demolished and rebuilt, with a capacity of 15,754 (11,533 regular seats, 4,023 premium seats and 180 seats in the presidential box) . The other three stands will not be demolished, but will undergo significant changes that will affect the comfort and experience of fans. The project also includes roofing and a new façade that will radically change the current appearance with an architectural proposal that will surround the stadium with thirteen stripes from the Real Betis badge. Among the features included in the design are a rooftop and sky lounge, a spectacular space at the top of the west stand with hospitality options and great views of the city.

The new Estadio Benito Villamarín will also realise three important points for the city. These will be high-quality public spaces, with a main plaza, greenery, pedestrian areas, with recreational options. Services and facilities, with new underground car parks and retail spaces that will increase activity in the area all year round and, above all, give the city an iconic new building that will have a positive impact on Seville's image .

In line with the sustainability values supported by Real Betis through the Forever Green platform, the new stadium will be one of the first in Europe to be environmentally certified through a project focused on energy optimisation. The project will also include spaces for people with reduced mobility with more than 500 seats and spaces specially designed for a better view of the pitch.

Once the winning candidate has been selected, the club will begin working with Rafael de la-Hoz and studio Gensler on the basic design and then the execution proposal to obtain construction permits, which is expected to begin next summer .

real betis stadium tour

Liverpool will kick off their pre-season tour in the USA this summer with a game against Real Betis at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on Friday July 26 (kick-off 7.30pm EST).

The Reds last met the Spanish outfit back in the autumn of 2005 in the group stage of the Champions League, when Rafael Benitez's defending champions won 2-1 away from home before a goalless draw at Anfield.

The club will return to the USA this summer for the first time since 2019 and matches have already been announced with Premier League rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Arsenal game takes place on July 31 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia and will be followed by the encounter with United at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on August 3.

A pre-sale code will be made available for the Real Betis fixture for LFC Official Members, season ticket holders, official LFC supporters clubs, hospitality members and international academies. This can be used to purchase tickets from 3pm BST/10am EST/7am PST on Wednesday April 10.

Tickets will go on general sale to the public from 2pm BST/9am EST/6am PST on Thursday April 11 via Ticketmaster.

Ben Latty, the club's commercial director, said: "Adding Pittsburgh to our pre-season tour schedule is a great way to start our eagerly anticipated return to the USA.

"We were delighted to quickly sell out our fixtures against Arsenal and Manchester United on this tour and are equally excited to be able to offer our supporters in the States another opportunity to see Liverpool FC play. Real Betis will come with a strong squad and it's going to be a great occasion in another iconic setting, in another fantastic US city."

The project presented by Rafael de la-Hoz and Gensler has won the international competition in architecture called by Real Betis to design the new Benito Villamarín Stadium, one the key points in the Strategic Plan 2022-26.

The board of administrators decided in the final vote for the joint candidature of the Spanish architect and the studio from the United States of America. They will develop the project design that is crucial in the growth of the Club and that will transform the house of the Béticos in one of the referential football venues at national level and a new icon of the city of Seville.

The new complex will multiply the revenue of the institution through a new stadium concept, open, modern, and that will allow to increase the commercial activity of Real Betis throughout the whole year thanks to different quality spaces.

The design will widen the entertainment and hospitality offer on match days, before, during and after the games, and also on days without sporting events. The Stadium will become a big leisure and events centre, with an auditorium of 450 seats, and also an important touristic site in the city.

real betis stadium tour

The Stadium, in spite of the conceptual change, will preserve the essence and spirit of Real Betis and its fans, providing a special place for history by improving and expanding the Museum and the Tour; and boosting the atmosphere and fan experience by increasing the number of services and comfort.

The new Benito Villamarín Stadium will have capacity for 60,379 spectators. The current Preferencia Stand (West Stand) will be demolished and rebuilt, with capacity for 15,754 seats (11,533 regular seats, 4,023 premium seats and 180 seats in the Presidential Box).

The other three stands will not be demolished, but they will undergo substantial changes that will have an impact on the comfort and fan experience. The project also includes the installation of a roof over the four stands and a new façade that will radically change the current look with an architectural proposal that will surround the Stadium with the thirteen stripes of the badge.

real betis stadium tour

The Stadium will have 4,436 premium tickets, 7.3% of the total capacity. 30% of them will be VIP model (private hospitality) and 70% Club model (shared hospitality). Also, the design has flexibility to increase these numbers in case of a higher demand. These areas will be available both on match days and to host corporate events.

ALSD International 2023  will take place at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium October 9-10. O ptimising revenue through New Builds, Renovations & Service  Expansions is the  key focus of this industry-leading event, with architecture & design, fan experience, hospitality, premium sales & service, sustainability and technology taking centre stage.

The restaurant offer will be another of the pillars of the fan experience enhancement, both on match days and on every other week day. There will a wide variety of food selling points in the venue, and a 360 corridor on the lower stand where different food concepts will be, such as the ‘Green Market’.

Among the experiences included in the design, we can find the rooftop and the sky lounge, a spectacular place on top of the West Stand with hospitality options and a great view of the city.

The New Benito Villamarín Stadium will also implement three important points for the city: quality public spaces, with a main square, greenery, pedestrian areas, with leisure options; services and equipment, with new underground parking lots and commercial areas that will increase the activity in the area during the whole year; and, more specifically, it will give the city a new iconic building that will have a positive impact in the image of Seville.

real betis stadium tour

Following the values in sustainability supported by Real Betis through its platform Forever Green, the New Stadium will be one of the first in Europe to have environmental certification with a design focused on energetic optimisation. The design will include spots for persons with reduced mobility (PRM) as well, with more than 500 places and spaces specially designed for an enhanced view of the games.

Architect Rafael de la-Hoz explained that this is “a great opportunity” to link “an iconic venue” with the public space of a “legendary city. We had been waiting for a long time to work on an urban stadium and we are going to do it in the best possible place.”

De la-Hoz added:

This is not just a stadium transformation project into a vanguardist infrastructure but, also, an urban insertion project in La Palmera and Heliópolis neighborhood. This all makes it especially interesting.
This is the first fundamental step for the Club’s future and one of the cornerstones of our strategic plan. Real Betis will have a quality stadium that will make all the Béticos proud, with comfortable facilities and great services. The New Villamarín will be a national and even international reference, with an innovative business model that will allow us to take a big leap forward in revenue, and that will help us to keep growing. And, of course, an added value to the city. The City Hall sees it as a project for the citizens, too. We want to congratulate Rafael de la-Hoz and Gensler for their project, and all the other candidates for the excellence they showed in their works. It has been a tough decision because all the projects were exceptional.

Once the winning candidate has been chosen, the Club will start working alongside Rafael de la-Hoz and Gensler on the basic project and, later, the execution project to obtain the permits for the works, that are expected to begin next summer.

Manchester United of the English Premier League has long been among the most well-known sporting brands in the world.

Real Betis of Spain’s La Liga has a massive following throughout Europe and wants to expand its footprint in the United States.

On July 31, the two international soccer powers will face off in an exhibition match at Snapdragon Stadium as part of each team’s pre-season tour.

Tickets for the match are on sale now.

The two clubs have history dating back over 100 years yet have only met four times, most recently in a pair of matchups in last season’s Europa League tournament.

Manchester United’s San Diego visit will also include a game against Arsenal at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 27 and one against Liverpool in Columbia, S.C.

Juan Mata, who starred for Manchester United, and Tab Ramos, the former USMNT star who played at Real Betis, are taking part in numerous promotional activities as club ambassadors. They took a tour of Snapdragon Stadium on Friday.

Manchester United made its Snapdragon debut last July with an exhibition against fellow-British club Wrexham.

“It’s fantastic,” Mata said. “I experienced it myself as a player, coming over to the States many times. Just to hop on a plane and travel 12, 15 hours and get off and people still know you and love you and the club, it’s a great experience. Man United is one of the biggest names in the history of the sport so it’s nice to come to San Diego and get to know this town and gain new fans here in this wonderful stadium.”

While EPL teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have made several preseason trips to the U.S. for exhibition games over the years and carved out huge followings thanks to television contracts that regularly put the sport in front of American eyeballs, La Liga has been playing catch-up.

Though clubs like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are very well known among international soccer fans, the league as a whole has not gathered the same kind of following in part because the presence on U.S. television has not been nearly as strong and teams haven’t made as many tours.

To that end, La Liga President Javier Tebas recently revealed plans to hold a regular season La Liga match in the United States during the 2025-26 season.

The door for holding such a match was opened recently when an agreement was reached between New York City-based event promoter Relevent Sports and FIFA, the sport’s international governing body.

“An official match in the U.S. will strengthen our position in the North American market,” Tebas told the Daily Mail. “Other very competitive leagues are coming so we can’t afford to always do the same things.”

Ramos, who played for Real Betis from 1992-95 and played in three World Cups for the USMNT, sees the upcoming tour as a good opportunity for the club to grow its brand.

It will be the club’s third visit to the U.S. since 2019 and only its second appearance in California.

Though official rosters for the tours will not be set until after preseason camps open, there’s a good chance that current USMNT member Johnny Cardoso will be on the field for Real Betis.

Cardoso has one goal and two assists in 11 appearances with Real Betis this season.

“Betis has a massive following in Spain,” Ramos said. “Most people here are more familiar with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico … but it is a huge club and is just starting to get its footprint out and about it. To play here in San Diego in a wonderful stadium like this against a club like Man United is a great thing. It’s a nice chance to win over some fans.”

Why Mata is back in a United shirt again

Old Trafford.

  • Share With email

Juan Mata is back in a Manchester United kit again, as he promotes this summer’s Tour 2024 match against Real Betis in San Diego, USA.

Our former playmaker made 285 appearances and scored 51 goals during nine seasons as a Red, winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League.

It’s fair to say the Spaniard became an incredibly popular figure at Old Trafford thanks to his unique ability on the pitch and kindness off it.

We think you’ll agree, it’s amazing to see Juan back in our kit…

The crest is back on his chest

Don't miss these images of Juan Mata spreading the word about United in San Diego, USA.

Mata left Old Trafford in 2022 and went on to win titles with Galatasaray in Turkey and Vissel Kobe in Japan.

The 35-year-old is considering his next move in football and, to our delight, he is currently spreading the word about United in America.

Juan arrived in San Diego earlier this week and spent Thursday in the community, speaking to the media, visiting a local YMCA centre, training with youngsters and even seeing the air base.

“We are visiting some soccer schools, hospitals, we are trying to do as much as we can in these three or four days that we will be here," said Juan.

“Because it's very important for a football player to actually get to know where we are and connect with the soccer fans, and for Manchester United too, so it is a great opportunity for both the club and myself. I'm really excited about being in San Diego, which is a lovely place. I'm also looking forward to the game.

“It's going to be a nice game against a Spanish side that I know very well. It is going to be a competitive game, although it is pre-season and there's no points, but I'm sure that both teams will bring the best teams they can and hopefully there's great entertainment for the fans. It's always been great to play in front of the US fans for United. I remember many fantastic stadiums and many fantastic memories with them, so hopefully it's going to be one of those.”

‘A very important market for us:' Why Manchester United and Real Betis are playing at San Diego's Snapdragon Stadium

Growing the game in the usa is at the forefront of major international matches, by derek togerson • published april 29, 2024 • updated 4 hours ago.

On July 31, Snapdragon Stadium will host an international soccer match between a pair of European behemoths. Manchester United of the UK’s Premiere League and Real Betis from Spain’s LaLiga. It will technically be the preseason for teams across the pond and this is a long way to go for an exhibition match.

“Yeah, but this is a very important market for us, for any big club in the world, the United States, with millions of people. There are really following soccer and getting to know even more. It's a big market for the club,” says Juan Mata, who played nearly a decade for Man U. “Players like Lionel Messi are here so it's just a very, very trendy time to be in the States if you love soccer.”

San Diego was an easy choice to host it. America’s Finest City has earned a reputation amongst world-class clubs for being a soccer-friendly destination.

“I think the San Diego has been gathering attention now with the new MLS team coming in and with the women's team here as well,” says Tab Ramos, the former US Men's National Team star who also played in the 90’s with Real Betis. “I think a lot of it's recognized for having a lot of fans and fans that would like to attend the game. So, I think this will be a great market and it's great to have Real Betis here with Manchester United.”

Continuing to grow the game on a global level is one of the main reasons massive European brands play games in America.

“I think for our kids here now, it becomes an opportunity to watch the best players play,” says Ramos. "And not only that, to recognize that now the door is open for them to become professional players, not just in the United States, but all over the world. We have other players that are already playing there and Real Betis, there's an American playing there, which I think will be a great incentive for the kids.”

Breeze Airways comes to San Diego International with 5 new routes

Johnny Cardoso is a New Jersey native playing for Real Betis, one of 17 Americans currently playing in Europe’s top three leagues (Premier Leage, Bundesliga, LaLiga). That number continues to climb, making Los Estados Unidos a sleeping men’s soccer giant that might be slowing waking up.

“I think the potential is incredible,” says Mata. “You have a lot of people wanting to play sports to be outside. This is very much in your culture, as I believe. So, if you add soccer to the men's sports that you have in your country right now, they're going to produce for sure many good players, both female and male. Of course, we all know how the women’s national team is doing in the United States. I believe that the men's one can match that level.”

If the US ever wins the World Cup, matches like this will not be the reason why. But they certainly might speed up the process.

Here are the Ted Lasso Filming Locations

real betis stadium tour

If you enjoy the AppleTV show “Ted Lasso”, perhaps you have wondered where they actually shoot it. Here are some Ted Lasso filming locations, most of which are in Greater London.

(Disclaimer: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning Groundhopper Guides may receive some compensation if you make a purchase after clicking one of these links.)

This post has been updated after Season Two. Note there are some spoilers in here!

You can skip ahead to the soccer-related Ted Lasso filming locations .

First, though, who and what are Groundhopper Guides? We’re the ultimate resource for people who want to know more about — and go see — soccer in England and Europe. Find out more about us here .

Next, a tiny bit of history: Who and what is Ted Lasso?

This All Started With NBC’s Ted Lasso Tottenham Ads

When NBC got the contract for US broadcasts of the Premier League, they created two short and hilarious ads in which Lasso, an American football coach from Wichita State, comes over to coach Tottenham Hotspur. Like most people, when I heard those Ted Lasso Tottenham ads had been turned into an AppleTV series, I wondered how on earth that would happen.

The result has been a bit of a surprise hit. Ted Lasso is an ever-optimistic guy who sees and inspires the best in people, and it turns out that, while he doesn’t understand the offside rule, he’s a decent coach. Other characters and layers have been added, and for me the result is that “Ted Lasso” is … fine . But awards have been flying in left and right!

By the way, NBC still broadcasts the Premier League in the US, through their streaming Peacock service .

But where is Ted Lasso filmed?

Non-Soccer Ted Lasso Filming Locations

Here’s the trailer for the 2021 season, that shows many of the Ted Lasso filming locations:

Ted’s fictional employers are AFC Richmond, and many scenes are filmed in the real-world Richmond, a town in Greater London. These include his apartment, Richmond Green (where he gets schooled by a young girl dribbling past him) and the Prince’s Head Pub, which shows up a few times.

Here it is on Google Maps :

Map showing location of the Prince's Head Pub, used as a Ted Lasso filming location.

Ted Lasso’s Pub in Richmond

Ted’s pub on the show is called the Crown and Anchor.

Here are a couple shots of the real pub, the Princes Head, which is just a six-minute walk from Richmond Station on the Overground, South Western and District Lines. The show changed the sign to say “Crown and Anchor,” and they seem to have covered up the bit that actually says “The Prince’s Head” on the wall.

This scene should be very familiar to Ted Lasso viewers.

Ted Lasso’s “local” is the Princes Head on Richmond Green.

Thanks to reader Ian (see comments below) for helping out with this one!

Inside, the pub looks much like the TV version, although they don’t film it here. Here’s the real interior:

How do I know they don’t film it here? Compare the above shot, with the bar on the right, with this shot from the (kind of) same angle on the show:

See the doors in the background? Those aren’t in the Princes Head. That’s a studio re-creation.

Ted Lasso’s Street in Richmond

As on the show, just outside the Princes Head is Ted’s home street, which in the real world is called Paved Court. The giveaway here was an Argentinian empanadas placed called Chango , which was easy enough to find.

And here is that empanada place — they’re delicious!

Mmm, empanadas!

When I was there looking for these Ted Lasso filming locations, there were other people doing the same thing! So one of the shops on Paved Court is getting in on the act by selling AFC Richmond gear.

More Ted Lasso Locations in Twickenham

Richmond’s neighboring town of Twickenham, most famous for being the home of England’s national rugby stadium, also appears as “Richmond” on “Ted Lasso.”

In Season 2, Episode 1, we see Roy, Keeley and Phoebe sitting by the River Thames with a boathouse in the background. I spent more time than I would like to admit searching Google Maps for that place, but then a reader, James (see comments, below) informed us that it’s the Twickenham Rowing Club on Eel Pie Island, which might be the most English thing we’ve ever encountered.

Ted Lasso characers drinking coffee by the River Thames.

“Ted Lasso” scene with a view of Eel Pie Island.

Here’s the actual view, which makes it clear they added that bench for the show. You can find it just across from the Barmy Arms Pub ( Google Maps ) in a really cool area of shops and walking paths along the Thames.

The same view in the real world, across the River Thames at the Twickenham Rowing Club.

In Season 2, Episode 3, there are a couple of scenes with people walking around charming little streets, being clever and incisive — ah, life in London. Here are a couple of screenshots, along with their “real world” locations on Church Street in Twickenham.

Note The Eel Pie Pub on the left?

The Eel Pie is “a rugby-themed pub” on Church Street in Twickenham:

Yep, just like on the telly!

And that doll shop? It’s actually a shop at 43 Church Street called Mojo , an “unorthodox gift shop stocking a range of clothing, fragrances, homeware, stationery and gadgets.” I hope they got paid well to probably lose a day or two of business while their shop became a haven of orphan British girl dolls.

Soccer-Related Ted Lasso Filming Locations

Especially in season one, “Ted Lasso” was oriented around a soccer season and Richmond’s desire to avoid relegation. You can read more on our site about  the English system of promotion and relegation .

AFC Richmond Training Ground

AFC Richmond’s training ground, seen here, is actually the home of Hayes and Yeading FC.

Hayes and Yeading, founded by the merger of Hayes FC and Yeading FC in 2007, are in the Southern League Premier Division South, at tier seven of the English football pyramid. ( Here’s a guide to the leagues and cups of English soccer .) Their home ground, Beaconsfield Road, is conveniently next to West London Studios, where much of Ted Lasso is filmed. As you can see, this is all out by Heathrow Airport.

Ted Lasso and AFC Richmond’s Home Ground

Many fans of the Premier League will instantly recognize that the fictional Nelson Road, aka the “dog pound” because it’s the home of the AFC Richmond Greyhounds, is in fact Selhurst Park, home of the real-world Premier League club, Crystal Palace.

Ted and his assistant look over the Whitehorse Lane End at “Nelson Road,” aka Selhurst Park.

By the way, some of those action scenes, like the one above, actually use computer-generated crowd scenes. But at other times it’s the real Palace ground.

In Season Two, we got a clear exterior shot of Selhurst Park, specifically the roof of the Holmesdale Road End:

Notice the little touches they put up to make it say “Nelson Road.” They go through a lot for something that’s on the screen for like three seconds.

When AFC Richmond Won at “Everton”

My favorite “get” of a Ted Lasso filming location was from Season One, when the Greyhounds won a vital game away to Everton. Everton, of course, are in Liverpool and play their games at historic Goodison Park. Presumably shooting there was too expensive or something, so the makers of Ted Lasso stayed in London but needed a proper historic-looking ground.

What better choice, in that case, than Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC of the Championship, whose ground is shown here in Ted Lasso — still with the Fulham crest above the turnstiles!

Ted Lasso Filming Location Craven Cottage

Appearing briefly as Everton’s Goodison Park: Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC.

In fact, on the right side of that screenshot, you can see the cranes from the ongoing construction of a new Riverside Stand at the Cottage. Here are some pictures of the same exterior before an actual Fulham game.

Look familiar, Richmond fans?

To learn more about these grounds, you can take a tour of Everton’s Goodison Park or take a tour of Fulham’s Craven Cottage .

Ted Lasso at Wembley: AFC Richmond vs Manchester City in the FA Cup Semifinals

In S2E8, “Man City,” soccer comes back to the fore again, as Richmond make the semifinals of the FA Cup. I was wondering if we’d get any City cameos. Nope. But they clearly filmed the pregame sideline scene at the real Wembley.

screenshot from "ted lasso" of soccer players at wembley stadium

Note how Wembley wouldn’t let “AFC Richmond” walk on the pitch!

Here they probably used a drone and then filled in computer “fans.”

It’s easy to spot when you’re flying into London …

… and they definitely play FA Cup Semifinals there. I know, because I’ve seen one. We sell tickets for FA Cup semis and Finals, too!

I’ve also taken a tour of Wembley Stadium , as well, part of which is standing in that exact same sideline spot at the end of the players’ tunnel.

screenshot from "ted lasso" of soccer players on the sideline at Wembley Stadium

The players’ tunnel at Wembley is a pretty cool spot. It’s part of the tour!

Here’s my shot from the same spot:

From the Wembley Stadium tour.

Three other fun notes from S2E8!

#1 was tough to catch: When Coach Beard said he had accidentally been on mushrooms at one game (which made me laugh out loud), Roy says to him, “The Port Vale game?” With Richmond in the Championship and Port Vale (from the Stoke area) in League Two, that must have been an FA Cup game.

#2, the ref was the actual Premier League ref Mike Dean, and he got a line, too!

referee mike dean leading the players out of the tunnel at Wembley

Yep, that’s Mike Dean! Watch for him on Premier League broadcasts.

And #3, there were two legit City points in there, each of which may have been filmed at this year’s Charity Shield game: singing “Blue Moon” before the game, and doing their face-away-from-the-pitch “Poznan” dance after a goal:

manchester city fans dancing with their back to the pitch

This looks like actual footage to me.

Was Nate Really at West Ham on Ted Lasso?

The final shot of season two shows Nate, clearly set up to be the villain of Season Three, in his new job as manager of West Ham United. But was he really at West Ham?

screen shot of nate from ted lasso coaching west ham players

Is Nate really at West Ham?

The answer, for me, is no — for two reasons. One is they would never have gotten permission to film on the pitch at London Stadium. They clearly don’t have it at Selhurst Park or Wembley, either. At Hayes and Yeading they do — I suppose because the shoot in summer?

Reason #2: Last I saw, the seats at London Stadium don’t say “West Ham” on them. But it’s a pretty good fake — I’m curious how they did it.

Ah you meant Series 2 Episode 3 (I think you say Season 2 Episode 3 in the USA) – that explains it! Nevertheless, we did notice the postcode was changed 🙂

The fictional postcode is SE23 (Southeast 23 – all postcodes in London are a compass direction plus a number, so there is no S2E3), however, having lived in Richmond for years, I can say the actual code is TW9 as in Twickenham 9, as it is on the outer edge of London.

Ted’s local is actually a pub called the Princes Head, next door to The Cricketers (it’s to the right of the pub shown in your photo). It also happens to be my local. Oh and the staff at the Princes Head told me that the interior scenes were shot at a mock-up of the pub in Shepperton Studios.

I wish I saw this article before, I just filmed a video touring the locations on Ted Lasso https://youtu.be/p23b3U_H-KQ

Thanks! We made this change.
