journey church youth group

Connecting with others is the boost you need for a strong 2021. Journey Groups provide a place where you can be known, grow, and learn to live life to the fullest through Jesus.

Church is more than a one-hour gathering on Sunday. The church is a community sharing life with each other. Journey Groups are the primary way that we learn to live out our faith together. You will not only encounter the tangible presence of God but be transformed into Christ’s image. Through community, we can begin to live our lives the way Jesus modeled and see our city renewed for His glory.

While most groups are open to anyone, some will focus on particular walks of life, such as parenting or young adults.

No matter who you are or where you are, there is a Journey Group for you!

A spiritual family that lives on mission together

Six Elements of a Missional Community Group

1) Pray and listen to God together.

As a spiritual family, we should certainly be communicating with God and we should be doing it together. A big part of that is listening. In addition to asking God for things in prayer, we should be asking God where He is at work around us; what He wants to teach us and do among us; and listening for His voice. There should be both an individual and a collective nature to this.

2) Pursue Bible-saturated spiritual growth.

A part of following Jesus is growing in discipleship. We want to be taking spiritual steps forward both as individuals and as a Missional Community. We never want to stall, having good conversations about God but not putting things into action and growing in maturity. As we make spiritual growth a goal, spending time reading the Bible and discussing what God is saying through it should be a regular part of our rhythms.

3) Eat together.

Making community a goal does not usually end well. A group with that kind of goal usually winds up inward-focused and eventually implodes on itself. But there is one thing that naturally builds community that we can intentionally do, and that is eat together regularly. Everyone eats, and life is shared around the table, so eating becomes an easy invitation into the community and a natural place to develop both community and disciple-making relationships.

4) Bear each other’s burdens.

Part of being family is caring for each other, and one tangible way we do that is by bearing each other’s burdens. Some of our burdens are the trials of life, like death, losing a job, or problems in our marriage. Others are just the ordinary things of life like stress at work or home, work around the house, or moving. In all of these things, we care for each other enough to know what is going on, offer counsel or prayer, and offer to help when there is a need we can meet.

5) Choose a specific mission focus.

In order to most effectively accomplish the mission God has given us to make disciples, every Missional Community should choose a specific people or group to be on mission to. We all live and work in various places and we should look for ways to share the gospel story and make disciples there. However, as we move together as a Missional Community, having a focused area of mission provides intentionality, accountability, and support. This focus could be on a specific neighborhood, a school, a school organization (like band or football), the poverty-stricken, or foster families.

6) Invite others in.

Many people will not be open to the gospel story or to faith in Jesus at first hearing. Their unfamiliarity with it or their past experience makes them unready to believe. For many of these people, seeing what life in the Kingdom is like will be a major part of their journey. As we invite them into life in our Missional Communities, they will have an opportunity to see and hear what it means to follow Jesus and start picturing themselves that way.

JOURNEY YTH

As a church we want to help impact families for Christ, doing everything we can to empower and come alongside each household. At Journey Yth we do that through ministering to, and working alongside, our students. Journey references the path each and every believer is on as we move closer and closer to Christ. Our youth ministry’s main priority is frequently helping every student take one step closer in their journey toward God. Depending on where a student might be, those steps might look like knowing God in a deeper way, finding freedom in their lives, or making a difference in the community and world around them.

//WEDNESDAY NIGHTS

Our Wednesday services run from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

Our youth runs small group programming where students spend the majority of the service together, from connection time in our youth room to worship in the main Worship Center. After the sermon, students split into small groups with their leaders to discuss that night’s teaching. Small groups are separated by grade and gender with groups for Jr. high boys, Jr. high girls, Sr. high boys, and Sr. high girls to allow students to engage in open and honest discussion. Our purpose behind this is to allow students to engage in what we are preaching, and better retain the material we cover each week.

Our worship is led by a mix of our youth leaders and students. During this time in the service, we encourage everyone to engage and express themselves freely, our desire being to honor God with our worship.

Our sermons are specific and relevant for teens, with small group questions being written specifically for each age group to better address students in their current season of life. Each night our goal as a youth ministry is to grow together toward Christ.

//SMALL GROUPS

Our youth ministry runs two small groups every Sunday morning directly after the 9:00 AM service until about 11:00 AM, one is for Sr. high students and one for Jr. high students.

Our priority is continued Biblical education for all of our students. We work to accomplish this by having our small group leaders break down books of the Bible and tackle real-life issues our students face in their everyday life. Each group goes through topics in a way that intentionally speaks to their age group to better address the topics and issues our students are facing in their current season.

//ministries & events

Our youth take part in dozens of events and ministries throughout the year. From weekly Bible study and youth services, to camp and youth convention, there is always something going on with lots of opportunities to get involved and have fun.

For the last several years specifically we have joined with Reach the Heart Ministries in their annual Chicago Outreach. We look forward to these ministry events and trips with expectation as we watch God move in ways that only He can!

Medical Liability Release Waiver

We require that all minors have an active medical / liability waiver on file with our church if they wish to travel to the planned events we schedule throughout the year. These events include camps, conventions, and other fun activities. These forms are good for one calendar year starting in January and will expire on December 31st of every year. You will need to fill out a separate online form for each child in your household.

//Accelerate+

Accelerate+ is our 9 - 12th grade discipleship program. We encourage young leaders to discover their gifts, talents, and calling; deepen their walk with God, and deploy them into ministry.

Students meet monthly for a hang-out event and mentorship, serve at least once a month in our Sunday ministries, and are given practical applications to help them take steps closer to God in their journey with Him.

Students can apply to join here.

Thank you for your interest! The Journey team will contact you as soon as possible

Love our youth well

journey church youth group

Our mission is to love well, seek to understand and foster growth and belonging with the youth in our community. The Journey Youth Group is a group for middle school & high school students. We are a community of imperfect people gathered around the love of Jesus, and with the desire to love well. During our time together, we hope to create a space where youth can experience belonging and growth! We meet  Sunday Nights from 6 pm til 8 pm  for a time of games, activities, and discussion. Check out our Monthly calendar for more details!

Meet the Journey Youth Group Team

Kyra gonzalez.

My name is Kyra Gonzalez and I have been attending the Journey for around a year now! I’ll be one of our youth leaders serving at the Journey. I have been involved with youth ministry for around 8 years through being a leader with Jr. High/ Senior High ministries and holding youth ministry internships. My Bachelors and Masters are in Social work. I currently work full-time as a supervisor with a local nonprofit foster care and adoption, serving children and youth. I consider it a privilege to get to serve children and youth during their formative years of growth, and extending to them the same grace and hope the Lord shows me on the daily. My hope is that The Journey youth feel they belong & matter fully to the Lord.

Jonny Gelnett

My name is Jonny Gelnett and my family and I started attending The Journey in January 2022. I have a background in youth ministry since 2012 helping lead high school age students as a volunteer. In 2014 I was a part of a church plant in Harrisburg while attending Messiah College. I worked in the Agape center leading college students to serve as ESL teachers, work with the youth, and engage in community outreach for about 4 years. In an international context, I have built a strong relationship in Trujillo, Peru, and have continued serving abroad in various ministry and construction opportunities since 2014-current.

My heart is to encourage our youth to become leaders of their own lives by being rooted in their identity in Christ. We have all been created for a purpose. For our limited time here on earth, we have an opportunity to be the best versions of ourselves. I’m on a journey to be the best version of myself by deconstructing my faith and creating it anew. I am excited to lead with curiosity the youth here at The Journey.

SPIRITUAL

We know that Youth Ministry is not summed up in just one kind of student or one topic of life. It's just as much about Excitement and Relationships as it is about being a disciple of Christ. So it is important for us to create an environment that is equally Exciting, Relational, and Bible-based.

We do this by providing weekly meetings, monthly events, mentoring, and many other things for students to be involved in. Parents, we want to help you win, anyway we can; so make sure you let us know how.

JOURNEY YOUTH

Who is journey youth for.

Junior High and High School students, grades 6-12.

When do we meet?

Wednesdays from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Journey Church.

Why are we Journey Youth?

Students have a very important decision to make. They can either choose the narrow path, God’s way for their life; or the world’s way, the easy road travelled. Teenagers are constantly faced with many distractions and pressures that lead them down a path away from God. We want to help them discover the better way. At Journey Youth, our goal is to help students discover and live out God’s plan for their lives. We pray that through this ministry, our students will choose to journey down the path with a God who is faithful and true.

Matthew 7:13-14

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Welcome HOME

Romans 15:7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Our Vision Statement : students discovering and living God’s plan for their lives

Why is this important.

Understanding that God has a plan for me helps me to learn to trust in Him and helps to build my faith in Him.  Understanding God’s plan for me challenges me and gives me a compelling reason for continued discipleship and growth in my faith.  Understanding God’s plan for me encourages me to think outward and become a part of His mission in this world.  Understanding God’s plan for me helps me to use my God-given gifts and talents for His Kingdom.  When I live out God’s plan for me, God uses me to make a difference in the world around me.

How do we accomplish this? through our H.O.M.E. model

Have Fun           We want to show these students that a relationship with Christ is fun.  Seeing the lost turn to Christ is fun. Experiencing miracles through Jesus  is fun. We strive to have fun. Open Up           As a ministry we make it clear to students that they are free to open up to  one another, to leadership, and to God. Oftentimes it can be difficult for  students to find an outlet safe to open up to. We strive to be those  confidants. Message of Christ           We wouldn’t do anything that we do without prioritizing an opportunity for  our teens to hear the message of Christ. We strive to portray that  message in all aspects of life and ministry. Environment           One of the most important parts of growth in a student’s life is their environment. That’s why we exemplify two important parts of Christ at Journey Youth. Worship and Celebration. With these components, we not only represent Christ well; but we strive also for a healthy space, created for students to seek after God.
