15 Best CAGAYAN Tourist Spots (Northern Philippines)

Over a decade ago, I was in my mid-20s and working as a TV segment producer on a show for a major TV network. This stint allowed me to travel to some of the best places, including Cagayan, one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines. The trip was so memorable for me, I’d always wanted to return. I guess I manifested it because in 2019, I joined a familiarization trip organized by the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority ( CEZA ). I recall thinking that despite the passing years, Cagayan remained pretty much the same, generally unexplored and as splendid as I had remembered it.

Cagayan Province is located in the Cagayan Valley region in the northern part of the Philippines. Its capital is Tuguegarao City . There are different stories as to the etymology of Cagayan. One is from the term “Catagayan,” meaning “the place where tagay grows.” Tagay is a type of plant that is endemic to the northern province. On the other hand, some linguists claim that the province’s name was derived from the local words for “river,” such as karayan , kayan , kayayan , and kalayan .

Cagayanos are mostly of Ilocano descent who migrated from the Ilocos Region. The second largest community is the Ibanag, while the minor population comprises the Malawis, Itawits, Gaddangs, Aetas, and Ibatans. The primary language in Cagayan is Ilocano, followed by Ibanag, Itawit, and Tagalog.

Dubbed the Land of Smiling Beauty, Cagayan is known for its Spanish colonial heritage and Sambali or Piat festival held annually to celebrate the Christianization of the Itawis. Thanks to its natural beauty and rich biodiversity, it’s also a major ecotourism destination, particularly attracting adventure seekers for its majestic caves, fishing expeditions, and hiking trails.

1. Palaui Island

Palaui is a protected island in Santa Ana, Cagayan , covering an area of 7,145 hectares. In 1994, Palaui was declared a National Marine Reserve and was home to 90 migratory birds, 21 commercial species of fish, and about 50 hectares of corals. It gained worldwide popularity after being used as a filming location for two Survivor seasons; Survivor Blood vs. Water and Survivor Cagayan in 2013.

It was one of the places we visited during the familiariazation tour with CEZA. It took about 30 minutes to get to the island via boat from San Vicente Port.

Palaui is an excellent destination if you want to spend a day with nature. Some activities that you can do on the island are hiking, scuba diving, and enjoying the view of the rolling hills. The best attractions in Palaui are Cape Engaño Lighthouse, Anguib beach, Punta Verde, and Crocodile island.

We took a hike to the Cape Engaño Lighthouse (or Faro de Cabo Engaño). The lighthouse is not open to the public, but we were free to roam in the surrounding areas. And the view from that hill is worth the effort. There’s a 360-view of the sea and nearby islands; it was simply breathtaking.

Next we went to Punta Verde located on the other side of Palaui Island. It has an unsullied beach and numerous homesteads that accommodate tourists. If you want to see some props from the Survivor TV show, you can check out some at Punta Verde, specifically at Nature Village, where they were on display.

2. Anguib Beach

Anguib beach , also known as Boracay of the North, is located in the municipality of Sta. Ana. The beach is often compared with Boracay for its cerulean blue waters and fine white sand. I didn’t know that Cagayan was hiding such a pristine beach that when I saw it, I was completely blown away. The beach remains largely unexploited, so ruggedly gorgeous that it can rival the more popular beaches in the Philippines.

If you want to enjoy a beautiful beach away from the crowd, you should visit Anguib. The waters here are clean and filled with marine life making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

3. Callao Cave

Callao Cave is located in Peñablanca, Cagayan, about 24 km from Tuguegarao City. It’s known for the seven-chamber show caves that were first excavated in 1980. It’s part of the Peñablanca Protected Landscape and Seascape (PPLS), a protected area and national park.

Callao Cave is an important site in Cagayan not only for tourism purposes but also for its historical contribution. In 2007, a team of archaeologists excavated fossils of human sub-species called Callao Man or Homo Luzonensis from the late Pleistocene era from this cave. Today, tourists can visit seven chambers inside the cave, including the Chapel. This cave is perfect for beginners as it’s easy to navigate.

4. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River is a tributary of the Cagayan River that passes through the PPLS. The name means left-most in the local vernacular. It’s known for its fantastic views of karst formations and unspoiled waters.

You can go swimming or take a leisurely boat ride on this river. If you’re up for an adventure, you can do water rafting or kayaking, or ask the boatman to take you to Callao Cave where yo can go spelunking or see thousands of bats.

5. Nangaramoan Beach

Nangaramoan beach is located in Sta. Ana and it sits on the same shoreline as the other beaches, Anguib, Puzo, and Mapurao. With white golden sand, clear blue waters, and surrounded with lush greenery and rock formations, it’s no wonder it’s a favorite destination by the locals.

This is one of the beaches that you can visit in Sta. Ana. You can go on a day trip or stay overnight as there several resorts in the area. The shoreline is rocky, and the sand is coarse and filled with crushed corals, so be mindful of where you step. Nevertheless, you will enjoy the serene scenery and the picturesque beach.

6. Baggao’s Bluewater Falls and Cave

Baggao Bluewater Falls and Cave is a natural waterpark in the municipality of Baggao. It’s an underrated destination in Cagayan, where people can enjoy the waterfalls, swim in the natural pools, and explore the caves.

This park should be included in your itinerary if you’re looking for adrenaline-filled activities. Get ready to embark on an adventure where you can go trekking, river crossing, canyoneering, and spelunking.

7. Casagan Bridge & River

Casagan Bridge is located in Sta. Ana and it takes about 15 minutes to get there from the town properly. The bridge was built in 2018 on top of the Casagan Takuli River, which is the residents’ primary source of livelihood thanks to its abundant supply of edible shells and fish.

It’s one of the places we went to during the fam trip with CEZA. The bridge’s structure was made with planks of wood, steel cables, and chicken wire. It’s narrow, but light vehicles like motorbikes and bicycles can pass through it. I was able to walk over the bridge and take some photos; it swayed a little, but the bridge was sturdy, so there was nothing to worry about. This is a nice side trip when you visit Cagayan.

8. Buntun Bridge

Buntun Bridge crosses the Cagayan River from Tuguegararo city to Solana. The bridge was made with 14 Japanese steel spans. It took three administrations to complete the structure, beginning in 1959 under former President Carlos P. Garcia. Constructions continued during the term of former President Diosdado Macapagal, but it wasn’t until 1969 that it was finally finished and officially opened under former President Ferdinand Marcos.

At 1,369 m, it’s the second longest bridge in the Philippines after the San Juanico Bridge and the longest among river bridges in the country.

The bridge is the gateway to Tuguegarao City. It offers an unobstructed view of the Cagayan River; thus, the bridge became a tourist attraction in itself. It’s also a good vantage point for photographing the Sierra Madre and Cordillera mountains and the sunset.

9. Dumasag River

Dumasag River is located in Sitio Limbus, Barangay Rapuli, Sta Ana. The National Irrigation Authority originally intended the river to become a water resource for the rice fields in the area. Later on, it was developed into a tourist attraction due to its natural beauty.

Visit the Dumasag river and experience the slow and chill vibe of the province. You can go swimming here, slide down the makeshift waterslides, rent a tent, relax, and interact with the friendly locals.

10. Sierra Cave

The Sierra Cave is a living karst cave in Cagayan Valley situated in Peñablanca. It’s included in the 300 caves identified by the National Museum of the Philippines.

You will be amazed to see the beautiful limestone formations as well as the stalactites and stalagmites inside the cave. While the cave is generally easy to navigate, some tunnels are so narrow getting through them is going to be quite an experience. One such tunnel is Celica’s Passage, which is only 2 feet in diameter.

11. Buwacag Falls

Bucawag Falls is situated in Barangay Sta Clara, in the municipality of Sta. Ana. It’s part of Cagayan’s eco-50-hectare tourism site. The name “bucawag” means the deafening sound of flowing waters. The site is being preserved and managed by the Bucawag Eco-Tourism Association or BETA.

If you’re up for some physical challenge in exchange for the breathtaking views of the waterfalls and a refreshing dip in the natural pools, you should visit Bucawag. You will trek through the thick forest, past several rivers and different tiers of waterfalls. The trek is going to be challenging as the rocks are slippery, but there are safety ropes along the trail so you can definitely do it.

12. St. Peter’s Cathedral

St. Peter Metropolitan Cathedral is a Baroque church built in the 18th century. It is also known as Tuguegarao Cathedral, and you can find it at Barangay Centro 10, Tuguegarao City. The church used to be the seat of The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, founded by Dominican friars.

Whether religious or not, you will be astonished by the beautiful architectural design of the church. Made with sand, gravel, cement, mortar, steel, and bricks, the church has withstood the test of time, including World War II, where it suffered tremendous damage. It has since been restored and is now considered one of the most important historical landmarks in Tuguegarao city.

13. San Vicente Port (Santa Ana)

San Vicente Fish Port is an anchorage in Dugo, San Vicente Road, in the municipality of Sta Ana. This is the jump point for island-hopping activities, including the boat trip to Palaui Islands.

The port is not just a starting point for every island hopping activity but a destination in itself. There, you can watch the fishermen and boatmen as they go about their day. If you want a glimpse of local living, this is one of the best spots to do it.

14. Iguig Calvary Hills

Iguig Cavalry Hills is located on Cagayan Valley Road in the municipality of Iguig. It’s a known pilgrimage site in Cagayan, especially during the Holy Week or the Lenten Season. It was built in 1892, and it has 14 stations of the cross and a church called San Antonio de Galicia.

Even if you’re not Catholic, the Calvary Hills is an exciting tourist destination. It sits on top of a hill, offering a scenic view of gentle green slopes and the Cagayan River.

15. Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat

The Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat, also known as Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora de Piat, is located at Poblacion, Piat. It’s considered the Pilgrimage Center of Northeast Luzon. The church dates back to 1604 and is home to Madonna Our Lady of Piat, a brown-colored image of the virgin mary that is over a century old. It’s also a pilgrimage site, attracting many devotees, especially during the Sambali Festival and the feast of Our Lady of Piat, both are celebrated in July.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Piat is one of the 18 minor basilicas in the Philippines; for this alone, it’s worth checking out. The church is made of bricks with a curved wooden ceiling. Its simplicity makes the church unique, as most old churches in Cagayan have more lavish interiors and designs.

One of these chambers contains a stone altar illuminated by a natural skylight. That gives the cave an eerie catacomb-like experience.

Then, there’s the cave where millions of bats dwell and another cave that hosts numerous red-billed hornbills. One of the caves here also houses the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat.

4. Pinacanauan River

There’s a reason why they are named as such. That is why there is a sense of enchantment when you visit here.

12. Bagsang Falls

If you’re into chasing waterfalls, don’t miss visiting this spot. Bagsang falls may demand extra effort and time but as soon as you’ll reach it, it’s all worth it!

This small but charming waterfall has cold and crystal-clear waters that can soothe your muscles after the long trek. Then there’s the surrounding forest which teems with flora and fauna species.

13. Atulu Pottery Village

14. Nassiping Church Ruins

Cagayan province lies in the extreme northeastern part of Luzon. With a vast valley and the longest river traversing the region, its soil is considered one of the most fertile agricultural lands.

On the other hand, its shoreline boasts of the tourism industry thanks to its fine white sands and crystal-clear waters.

Apart from the hidden paradise, the province is also home to massive Spanish-style churches that are centuries old.

Its capital, Tuguegarao City , is known for its hot weather. The ideal time to visit Cagayan is from February to April. During this period, the average temperature ranges from the highs between 30-33 degrees C. However, its low average is from 20-22 degrees C.

Knowing the peak months of tourism when planning for a vacation to a specific place is very vital. When you want to visit Cagayan beaches, its peak is during April, followed by March.

Tourists coming from Manila can book a flight from Manila to Tuguegarao . You will be departing from Gate 4 of Ninoy Aquino International Airport and arriving at Tuguegarao Airport for about an hour. Going to the city center takes you by 10-15 minutes by car.

Ride a Bus from Manila to Tuguegarao

Ideal for solo backpackers or even group travelers, you can ride provincial buses that ply from Manila to Tuguegarao. It takes about 11 to 12 hours, though, so you might consider bus companies with a sleeper bus. If you want to see Cagayan Valley’s lush mountains and vast plains, you can travel during the daytime.

1. Callao Cave

Located at Peñablanca, the Callao Cave is around 40 minutes of travel from Tuguegarao City.

Upon arrival at its drop-off point, you’ll be climbing approximately 180 steps to reach the cave’s entrance.

The cave features seven large chambers, many of which resemble that of a cathedral dome. During your tour, you’ll appreciate the stunning rock formations resembling unique sizes and shapes.

Best visited during sunny days; sunlight passes thru the holes giving a dramatic ambiance. Take a bunch of photos while the local guide tours you to every chamber.

You can also observe bats, and if you are lucky, you can spot the red-billed Philippine Hornbill.

The largest chamber houses the Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Piat. Here, a large stone altar attracts one’s eyes and is perfect for saying those little prayers.

Whether you’re on a quick visit to the province or up for another vacation, Callao Cave is an excellent priority to your list of Cagayan tourist spots.

2. Sierra Cave

Adjacent to the Callao Cave is the Sierra Cave for those looking for added adventure.

Opposite to Callao’s laidback spelunking, visiting Sierra Cave will make you end wet and muddy. Wear the most comfortable dress and gear, though, and you are good to go.

Similarly, you’ll get to see unique rock formations inside. You get the liberty too to interpret its appearance in your imagination.

Exploring Sierra Cave is no easy task and requires some flexibility. Firstly, you’ll be descending on a steep hill to reach its base. You also need to crawl at some point, so it’s best to use water-resistant gadgets for those photo ops.

Shower rooms are available at the end of the trail, so you get to freshen up after your spelunking experience.

3. Pinacanauan River

The Pinacanauan River is one of the top Cagayan tourist spots you can visit within the Callao Caves National Park.

After spelunking, rent a boat and have a magnificent view of lush mountains, rock walls, and the cold freshwaters.

During dusk, you will have a chance to witness a colony of bats rises from the cave as dark approaches.

The total area of Cagayan Province is 9,295.75 square kilometers (3,589.11 mi). The vastness and appeal of Cagayan has resulted it in becoming the host of the 27 th and 28 th seasons of the American reality show, Survivor in 2013. The province has an extensive shoreline and boasts of activities like whale watching (Cagayan Islands), snorkeling and scuba diving as well as fishing (Palaui Island). It relies on corn, rice, peanuts, fruits and beans, fishing and woodcraft like hardwood, rattan, bamboo and other types of woodworks.

Visit Palaui Island

Palaui Island was listed by CNN as one of the top 10 beaches in the world. It’s a certified eco-tourism area and where several water sports can be enjoyed by visitors and people who like fishing. The marine life of Palaui is very colorful and the island houses one of the two lighthouses built during the Spanish colonization, Cape Engano. This lighthouse is still functioning properly.

The Atulu Pottery Village in Iguig has natural red clay soul which is used in their pottery making. Its locals are artisans in the pottery world and they have been doing it for a long time. They make different designs and sizes.

Visit Callao Cave

Callao Cave is a limestone cave found in Peñablanca, Cagayan Province. It’s one of the best tourist attractions in Cagayan due to its 300 caves around the area. Some of the caves along with Callao have been properly documented by the National Museum of the Philippines. Callao Cave is accessible by car but you can ask a tricycle driver to bring you there if you don’t have a car. The cave system of Callao is made of seven chambers having gaps for the light to peek through. The chambers used to be nine but due to an earthquake in the 80s, it decreased to seven. The largest of all the chambers is the first one which has been made into a chapel. Entrance Fee is Php25.

Swim in Pinacanauan River

This river is the largest arm of the Cagayan River. It’s the water source for irrigation and other purposes of the area and it’s also where the water from the farmlands goes to when it’s raining. The river can be found along Callao Caves National Park. It’s a site for whitewater rafting and kayaking since it has Class I and II rapids. Visitors can also go boating and swimming in calmer parts. Mountains surround the area which is popular for hiking, spelunking, and climbing activities.

Visit Baggao‘s Blue Lagoon

The small municipality of Baggao has a beautiful secret. It’s where you can find Blue Lagoon. Blue Lagoon depicts paradise with its stunning views of the water, rare plant species, wild animals, and some rock formations. There’s also a cave by the area. You need to trek for two hours to rich the blue and clear lagoon.

Visit St. Peter’s Cathedral

Also called Tuguegarao Cathedral and the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tuguegarao, it’s where the relics of Sts. Peter and Paul II can be found. The church was built during the Spanish Colonization period. It has an 18th-century Baroque architectural design and its belfry is one of the biggest in the Cagayan Valley Region. A visit to this church can inspire strength and hope in life.

Visit Nassiping Church Ruins

This is the ruins of a centuries-old church that is located in a spot where it’s facing both Cagayan and Chico River. Some of its parts are still intact like the stone side altars and the bell tower. This is the perfect spot for abandoned photography sessions.

Watch Rice and Corn Planting

Rice and corn are the agricultural gems of Cagayan Province. The province is the second-highest corn-yielding province in the Philippines and third place for rice-yielding. You can watch farmers plant their seeds (binhi) during the planting season and learn about the method. You can also ask some locals where you can watch coffee, mungo (mung bean), and sugarcane planting. They also plant peanuts.

Watch Aggao Nac Cagayan Festival

This week-long festival celebrates the establishment of the province’s civil government which happened in June 29, 1583. They hold different activities for this yearly event. They held cycling events, contests, dog show, creative writing, mural design exhibits, a job fair, coastal clean-up and many more during their celebration last June.

Go on a Foodie Tour

The foodie tour of Cagayan is an interesting one. First, the province uses carabeef and other carabao food items extensively. Their original pancit batil patong makes use of minced carabao meat. Second, they make a sweet dessert made of steamed glutinous rice and filled with grounded peanuts.

They make delicious Ybanag longganisa which is made, again of carabeef and has a load full of garlic. Their chicharabao is another carabao product but this one’s made of carabao skin that has been deep fried. Their most unique dish is lumot which is served with seafood. This is a kind of green algae and has a salty taste. They also have different pasalubong items that you can bring home to your family like carabeef tapa and carabao milk candies.

Cagayan Province’s stunning terrain and man-made attractions has put it in a must-visit level. The wonderful spots you can visit while in this province are endless. Cagayan is a region that has rugged but stunning landscapes, pristine beaches and, in some cases, a middle-of-nowhere ambiance that makes it an ideal getaway destination. It also has a rich cultural heritage with a number of old churches. The easiest way to reach this destination is to take a direct flight to Tuguegarao City from Manila. You also have the option to take the longer route, which is by bus. The travel time is approximately 12 hours one way. Visit Callao Cave

This cave is a famous attraction for both locals and tourists. Its chambers are massive, and you’ll feel like a dwarf once you walk inside. There is a chamber called the ‘Chapel’ which is a section of the cave that has been turned into a cathedral. The best time to visit is when the sun is at its peak. Palaui Island-hopping Escapade

This popular beach destination is within the confines of Sta. Ana, located in the northeastern part of Luzon. To reach the jump-off point from Tuguegarao City, board a bus or van bound for Sta. Ana. The trip takes about three hours and costs approximately P250. Once in town, get on a tricycle going to San Vicente Port; this will cost P15. Here you’ll find boats to take you island-hopping or just go to a specific destination for a fee. A combo trip going to Crocodile Island, Punta Verde, Anguib Beach, and Cape Engaño costs around P3500. This boat can accommodate up to 8 people. The lowest rate offered is P500 for short rides to Crocodile Island or Pugo Moro. Some places may cost up to P1800 because of their distance

The trip will take you to beaches with powdery, bleach-white sand, azure waters, and beautiful views. Go walking or jogging along the shore. Dip in the waters to cool off, work on your tan, take several photos or just chill. The landscapes characterized by rolling hills, rugged rock formations and coves are all stunning.

Pinacanauan River Boating Experience

This river plays an important role in the lives of the locals as its water is used for irrigation. This is also where you can go boating during your visit. This stunning waterfall located in Baggao is the perfect place to cool off in. It takes around two hours of trekking to reach this attraction, but it is worth the effort. Cross the Buntun Bridge

This bridge, stretching from Tuguegarao to Solano and measures around 1360m, is one of the longest river bridges in the country. It cuts through rice paddies and plains with views of the mountains in the distance. You can jog through or walk from one end to the other while taking in the beautiful surroundings.
