Service history [ ]

The Type-9A was introduced into service sometime before the year 2364 . The main production base for these shuttles was Starfleet Plant #24, Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards , Mars . They were routinely carried aboard Galaxy -class starships and also worked at Starfleet shipbuilding yards, transporting components to orbit from a planet surface. ( TNG references : Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual , USS Enterprise Owners' Workshop Manual )

At least one Type-9A cargo shuttle was assigned to the USS Enterprise -D in the 2360s . It was used as a heavy long-range warp shuttle for the transportation of cargo. ( The Official Starships Collection Issue Shuttle 28: "Cargo Shuttle Type 9A")

Still in service in the 2380s , the Type-9A was part of the auxiliary craft complement of Luna -class starships such as the USS Titan in 2386 . ( TTN novel : Sight Unseen )

Personnel Shuttles

This article is official Bravo Fleet canon.

Personnel Shuttles are the most common form of auxiliary craft used by Starfleet . Made for short-duration missions, these craft generally have warp capability that limits them to an effective range of only a few light-years from their mothership or base, and they typically can accommodate between four and eight people, including their crew. They are most effective at travel within the same star system. While the distinction between personnel shuttles and shuttlepods has shifted over time and can be somewhat fuzzy, personnel shuttles are generally larger and warp-capable while shuttlepods are smaller and limited to impulse speeds.

Type-4 Shuttle

The Type-4 Shuttle is based on the earlier Class-C shuttlecraft, a design that is also still seen in widespread use across the Federation. Its basic spaceframe has served as the core of the later Type-5, Type-6, and Type-8 designs, a line of vehicles that has seen production in the hundreds of thousands since it was first introduced in the 2280s. Generally speaking, these are no longer used by Starfleet, though there are exceptions hanging on at remote outposts and assigned to vessels in the Starfleet Auxilary, such as freighters and tankers. They still see widespread use in civilian hands.

The forward cockpit with two crew stations is separated from the aft passenger area by a section with doors to port and starboard that allow entry to the cabin. Entry is also possible through a large hatch on the aft end of the vehicle. Generally, the aft area contains bench seats on either side, though there are variants with these stripped out to carry more cargo, variants with chairs, and even VIP variants; because of this vehicle's extreme age, there are many variants that could be encountered.

Type4Shuttle3.jpg

Type-5 Shuttle

The Type-5 shuttle is an evolution of the earlier Type-4 design with an enhanced cockpit and other improvements to the general characteristics of the craft. It has been in service for over sixty years at this point and is generally found on older vessels and on unimportant space stations. It's often used as a flight trainer, given its commonality with so many other small Federation vehicles.

Unlike the earlier model, it has an emergency transporter.

Type5Shuttle3.png

Type-6 Shuttle

Of all of the models of shuttle produced in the 24th century, the Type-6 is the most common throughout Starfleet. Though it was introduced in the 2350s, it was produced in such high numbers that it will be a common sight in hanger bays across the fleet for the foreseeable future. Many pilots prefer this craft over later models because it strikes such a good balance between size and performance.

A shortened and enhanced version of the two previous models, this craft has an emergency transporter, replicator, and mounts for type-VI phaser banks which can be installed for special missions. With the two side hatches from the previous versions eliminated, access is only possible through the large rear hatch. Bench seating on the sides of the aft compartment is the most common configuration for this shuttle.

Type6Shuttle2.jpg

Type-6A Shuttle

Introduced alongside the California -class starship in 2368, the Type-6A shuttle incorporates all of the technical advancements of the Type-6 shuttle while returning to the fuselage length of the Type-5, once again featuring a pair of gull-wing doors between the cockpit and passenger/cargo compartment. This larger size allows it to reliably transport bulkier cargo, useful for ships not large enough to also carry cargo shuttles. The Type-6A is slightly taller than the model it is derived from, as it rests on its warp nacelles and not the bottom of the fuselage.

Type6AShuttle2.jpg

Type-7 Shuttle

Introduced alongside the Galaxy-class in the late 2350s, the Type-7 shuttle was the first wholly new personnel shuttle design in over 70 years. With its curved hull and spacious interior, it was a much higher performance vehicle than the Type-6 and generally has only seen service on larger vessels. It still remains a popular small craft, especially among senior officers who appreciate the separation between the flight area and the passenger compartment. Its production ended with the advent of the larger and more capable Type-11 shuttle.

Entry is provided through a hatch under the nose of the vehicle, which also serves as a ramp up into the cockpit, which contains free-standing consoles for a pilot and mission specialist. It has reconfigurable seating in the aft compartment that can serve in many variations ranging from bench seating for six, to front-to-back chairs for eight, to an executive configuration with a comfortable lounge space for senior officers.

Type7Shuttle3.jpg

Type-8 Shuttle

The most recent (and likely final) revision of the Type-4 spaceframe, the Type-8 shuttle is an uprated version of the Type-6, with enhanced computer systems, shields, and Type-VI phasers mounted by default, as a response to increasing concerns over the Borg that were circulating when it was introduced in the late 2360s. It was first used aboard Akira, Saber, and Norway-class ships, and retains the same overall shape and configuration of her older cousin. Though it's not meant for sustained combat, commanders can feel confident that it can get where it needs to go thanks to its adequate defenses.

This craft has an emergency transporter and replicator, and access is only possible through the large rear hatch. Bench seating on the sides of the aft compartment is the most common configuration for this shuttle.

Type8Shuttle2.jpg

Type-9 Shuttle

Designed alongside the Nova -class starship , the Type-9 shuttle is very fast for its size and is ideal for short-range scouting missions away from its mothership. It is armed with three Type-VI phaser arrays and has good shielding, but only has comfortable accommodations for four people, including two crew. It remains a common sight due to its utility, though it's less capable of transporting people than larger models. It is no longer in production, with the updated Type-12 now available.

The cockpit has a station for the pilot and a station for a mission specialist, which includes a large wrap-around console with access to the shuttle's enhanced sensor systems. Entry is provided through an aft hatch, which has a fold-down ramp and a roll-up upper section. Jumpseats can be installed in the aft section, or the shuttle can carry small amounts of cargo.

Type9Shuttle2.jpg

Type 10 Shuttle

The Type-10 shuttle is a combat-capable personnel transport suited for missions in dangerous areas. Designed for escort-type ships such as the Defiant-class, these craft take up a minimal amount of space and have hardened features. In addition to an armored hull, they're armed with Type-VI phaser arrays and twin micro-torpedo launchers mounted above the fuselage. These armaments make them an ideal choice for discreet tactical missions. They have the capacity for two crew members and four passengers. Entry is achieved through a single rear hatch, and this craft is one of the few Federation vehicles that has extendable landing legs to offer stability for its rear-heavy frame.

Type10Shuttle2.jpg

Type-11 Shuttle

Type-11 shuttles are large personnel shuttles intended for true interstellar travel. Built on similar principles to the earlier Type-7 shuttle but on a larger scale, this type of shuttle has a separate cockpit and configurable mission section, with options ranging from simple passenger space, a VIP stateroom, cargo space, or scientific equipment. This modularity makes it nearly as capable as a small runabout, and, indeed, smaller ships will often embark a Type-11 rather than a runabout. They have a single aft hatch, along with top and bottom hatches with docking clamps. They're also armed standard with Type-VII phaser arrays. This type is no longer in production, as it has been succeeded by the similar but more advanced Type-14 shuttle.

Type11Shuttle2.jpg

Type 12 Shuttle

Introduced in the early 2390s, the Type-12 shuttle is an upgrade to the Type-9 shuttle, with even faster engines and enhanced tactical systems (Type-VIII phaser arrays and two micro torpedo launchers). It is currently the standard personnel shuttle being deployed across Starfleet's newest ships and bases. Capable of even longer distance missions than the Type-9, the Type-12 is a highly capable craft that also fits in almost any hanger bay.

Type12Shuttle3.jpg

Type-14 Shuttle

Type-14 shuttles are the largest and most advanced personnel shuttles in service as of 2400. Like the earlier Type-11, they are configurable with options ranging from simple passenger space, a VIP stateroom, cargo space, or scientific equipment. They are just as capable as small runabouts for most missions, and are even used for long-distance journeys thanks to their high top speed. They retain from the Type-11 shuttle a single aft hatch, along with top and bottom hatches with docking clamps, as well as the same phaser armament. In addition, they have microtorpedo launchers fore and aft, allowing them to defend their VIP passengers.

Forgotten Trek

Evolution of The Next Generation’s Shuttlecraft

Since The Next Generation was set a century after the original Star Trek , not only the Enterprise but its shuttlecraft had to be upgraded as well. The job of designing a twenty-fourth-century shuttle was Andrew Probert’s, who also designed the series’ flagship.

Much like the design of Probert’s Enterprise flowed from Matt Jefferies’, he looked to the Shuttlecraft Galileo of The Original Series for inspiration. “My new shuttle was an attempt at correcting the size of what we know as the Galileo 7 , where in the actual vehicle you had to bend over to get in and out,” he told Greg Tyler of Trekplace in 2005.

I studied the interior while watching “Galileo Seven” footage, and the top of the door is actually at Leonard Nimoy’s nose, so he has to bend over to go through the door, but when you go to the exterior, the ship is much smaller, so that his bent-over attitude sort of cuts together nicely. I wanted to correct all of that. I wanted to design a shuttle that they could actually stand up in and walk out of vertically.

In an effort to make the new shuttle visually more interesting, Probert’s first plan was to put the entrance in the front.

He explained in an interview with Star Trek: The Magazine in 2001, “There’s a ramp that lowers between the two operators. The top portion of that would actually slide up, much like a sunroof does on a car, allowing the people to walk straight up into the shuttle between the operators.”

Type 7 shuttle concept art

The producers liked the idea, but it proved too ambitious. “They built a shuttle that basically had square edges on it,” said Probert. “Then they came up with the idea of getting into the shuttle from the side.”

Type 7 shuttle concept art

The model, which first appeared in “Coming of Age”, was even boxier. Although it was still somewhat reminiscent of the Enterprise -D’s curved lines, Probert was disappointed and called the final product a “Winnebago” (an American recreational vehicle) in his interview with Tyler.

A final modification was made to the windows. The original model had them running across the length of the shuttle, which would have interfered with the side entry. The original configuration was sometimes seen in Season 1 computer displays.

Type 7 shuttle

Probert used he longer windows in an artwork he made for a model kit of the pod, which also appeared in the 2013 Ships of the Line calendar.

Bernd Schneider details the appearances of Probert’s original shuttlecraft, which came to be known as the “Type 7”, as well the various incarnations of its cockpit, at Ex Astris Scientia .

After Probert left The Next Generation , Rick Sternbach was tasked with designing an alternative shuttle for the Season 2 episode “Time Squared”. He recalled in an interview with Star Trek: The Magazine in 2002:

Everybody was kind of scratching their heads and thinking that maybe we’d have to write the shuttlepod out. I cautiously went up to the front of the room with this very rough but fairly clear sketch. I said, “What if we made it fairly simple? Just planer construction, no compound curves. We can make it look Starfleet; that isn’t the issue. If we do something like this we can make the construction simple but also make it interesting.” They all looked at me, looked at the sketch, and said, “Ah, OK.” Then they approved it.

Type 15 shuttle concept art

This new shuttle, dubbed “Type 15”, was smaller, which made it easier to construct a life-sized mock-up.

Type 15 shuttle

As with the Type 7, the Type 15 shuttle underwent several changes in both its exterior and interior over the course of The Next Generation . Bernd Schneider has the details at Ex Astris Scientia .

By the fifth season, The Next Generation ’s shuttle complement was joined by the larger “Type 6”, which was a redress of the shuttlecraft that had appeared two years earlier in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier .

“We made use of one of the Trek V shuttles by chopping a section out of the middle and giving it new engines and windows,” Sternbach told Forgotten Trek in 2007 .

The great thing about it and most of the other Starfleet shuttles we built was the fact that where there are curves, the curves follow a single bend and “softening” the joined edges is no big deal. It was much easier to do the real set pieces that way, even if we did migrate to some ships that had no exteriors except for CGI.

Type 6 shuttle concept art

A miniature version was built by Ed Miarecki to appear in the model of the ship’s main shuttlebay in “Cause and Effect”, although it was barely visible on screen.

Enterprise-D shuttlebay model

A new miniature was built under the supervision of Greg Jein, which first appeared in “Parallels”. Unfortunately, stock shots from the Type 7 were repeatedly used and paired with Type 6 interiors, an inconsistency that continued into Star Trek: Voyager .

“A miniature version was built by Ed Miarecki to appear in the model of the ship’s main shuttlebay that was seen in Season 5’s “Cause and Effect”.” But didn’t that episode only show two Type-6 shuttles (named Berman and Piller I believe) in the main shuttlebay? “Unfortunately, stock shots from the Type-7 were repeatedly used and paired with Type-6 interiors, an inconsistency that continued into Star Trek: Voyager .” But Voyager did it with Type-6 and Type-8. Yeh, completely different I know, but still…
Maybe you can help. I bought a playmates Star Trek TNG shuttlecraft and I wanted to repaint it to look more screen accurate. I’ve been looking for days on Google and am struggling to find paint colors. Eventually once I’m confident I want to add lights to the interior as well as adding LEDs to the warp nacelles. Thanks.
believe the correct color for the shuttles is a light tan. The shuttles compliment the interior colors of the Enterprise -D as opposed to its exterior, which was blues and greens. The color you want is likely to be found on a Federal Standard (FS) paint chart (they’ll be lots of similar colors on there) and there are firms who can make you an aerosol if you can’t find the color ready made in hobby paint (or don’t want to mix your own, by adding lots of white as most off-the-shelf colors are too dark). However, under studio lighting, a lot of colors look washed out to a pale grey. Tamiya Insignia White AS20 is a great off-the-shelf option for TNG and Voyager shuttles, as it’s a light grey/off white, with a warm tint. It’s not accurate to the original miniature or full-size mockup, but it looks good in most indoor lighting and perhaps better than a light tan that is too dark. I’m using AS20 on one of my shuttlecraft projects and I’ve been quite happy with it, as in most of the scenes in the episodes, the shuttle I’m building looks bleached out under the studio lighting.
Thanks! I’d love to see how yours turned out.
Thanks I’ll post it on YouTube once finished. I’m getting there with my Type 15, lower half is assembled and painted with nacelles attached, upper half is assembled but not yet painted, I’ve got some lighting to do and panels to make for the touch screen displays. The Tamiya Insignia White looks great and I expect it will yellow slightly once the varnish goes on. Though I’ve since found that there was a kit of the Type 7, which had involvement with Andrew Probert, the instructions call for FS37722 as the paint code for the hull color, again its a warm light grey with some tan color in there.

First up is the original: the classic  Galileo shuttlecraft — classified as a  Class-F s huttle — is that iconic crew transport from the Original Series, complete with brilliant red Starfleet pinstriping and stylized hull markings identifying it as being attached to the USS Enterprise.

While the now-restored  Star Trek filming model now resides at Space Center Houston as an attraction for visitors, the Eaglemoss  Gailieo model stays true to the original Matt Jefferies design from 1966 and will fit in at home in a display case or on the corner of your desk at the office.

Composed of a die-cast metal top and plastic undercarriage/nacelle design, the red-and-black paint is crisp on the solid-feeling hull — but if there’s one weak spot on the  Galileo , it’s the gold landing strut extending from the aft section of the shuttle.

The strut is a plastic attachment, and is easily bendable with light pressure due to the thin point of contact with the rest of the assembly. It looks fine at a glance, just handle with care.

star trek shuttle type 9

Next up is the chunky  Type-6 shuttlecraft, one of the most used shuttle designs featured on  Star Trek: The Next Generation , brought into service for Season 5’s “Darmok” after the full-size set piece completed its duty as a  Galileo- type shuttle in 1988’s  Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

The top half of the  Type-6 shuttle is molded plastic, a necessary choice to capture the level of hull detail and shaping in this angular craft, while the base of the shuttle is the typical die-cast metal to which the warp nacelles are attached.

This version of the  Type-6 is the  Goddard,  the shuttle donated to Montgomery Scott after his rescue from transporter stasis in “Relics” – and was also notably issued as a Playmates action figure accessory in the 1990s.

The only thing that would make this one a little bit better is if that rear hatch would open up…

star trek shuttle type 9

The third craft in the collection is the barely-seen Type-10 shuttle, which only appeared in a single episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine : Season 6’s “The Sound of Her Voice.”

Attached to the USS Defiant , the Chaffee transported Sisko, O’Brien, and Bashir to the surface of a desolate world in an attempt to rescue stranded Starfleet captain Lisa Cusak, only to find she’d been dead for years by the time they arrived (due to a temporal anomaly surrounding the planet).

The tiny vessel just barely seemed to fit in the Defiant’s hold, and its Eaglemoss counterpart certainly reflects the on-screen size of the Chaffee — but still features the same technological stylings as the Defiant around the top of the engine section, clearly pairing it to DS9’s resident warship.

Like the Type-6 shuttlecraft, the Chaffee has a metal base and plastic upper half due to the detail on the engines.

star trek shuttle type 9

Finally, we round out the set with Star Trek: Voyager’s tiny, two-person Type-9 shuttle — sometimes called a Class-2 — which debuted as the shuttle Cochrane in Season Two’s “Threshold,” there souped up by Tom Paris to break the impossible Warp 10 speed barrier.

This Voyager craft was the final shuttle built as a studio model for Star Trek , transitioning to a digital replacement for later appearances in the series, and continued to be featured in the series even after the Delta Flyer began serving as the ship’s primary auxiliary craft.

Despite its winged look, the Type-9 is a surprisingly solid model, as the top half of the shuttle – including the nacelle struts – is a single piece of die-cast metal, leaving only the nacelles themselves and the underside of the ship as molded plastic.

You could probably step on this one and not do a speck of damage to it.

We do have to make note of the generic stand included with each shuttle, which is a notable step down from the full-size starship releases.

Instead of a plastic cradle to hold each ship in place, the shuttlecraft sets come with just a flat-topped stand that offers no stability when placing a shuttle on display — if the ship isn’t centered just right, a glancing bump of the hand will knock the small ships right off of the pedestal.

(This is noticeably an issue for the Chaffee and Type-9 shuttles, which have thin-widthed bases that makes each difficult to keep balanced on the stand.)

Each shuttle has a different structure on the underside, which makes this generic flat stand a bit ill-suited for the intended use; perhaps a pedestal with a larger surface area would be more appropriate for future releases.

We recommend a bit of double-sided tape or temporary adhesive to keep your shuttles properly docked.

The four-ship shuttlecraft set can be ordered over at Eaglemoss’ shop , and a second wave of shuttles is also available  as well – with at least two more collections like these in development now.

Redresses of the Type-9 Shuttle Cockpit

by Jörg Hillebrand and Bernd Schneider

A new interior set was built for the streamlined "Warp 10" shuttle Cochrane to appear in the infamous VOY episode "Threshold". Both the miniature and the interior showed up several more times as a Type-9 (or "Class 2") standard shuttlecraft, although initially the impression was created that the Cochrane was a one-off design. The set was then redressed a couple of times for various Federation and alien shuttles.

In this article we investigate the various redresses of the shuttle interior, and we try to find possible rationales for some of the changes.

Star Trek Voyager

As already mentioned, both the model of the Type-9 shuttle and the interior set first appeared in VOY: "Threshold".

star trek shuttle type 9

The set in its original configuration could be seen in the following episodes:

  • "Threshold"
  • "Innocence"
  • "Basics II"
  • "The Swarm"
  • "Future's End II"
  • "Real Life"
  • "The Raven"
  • "Tsunkatse"
  • "Natural Law"
  • "Renaissance Man"

The interior of the shuttle and especially the windshield can be seen better in some of the later episode. It corresponds to the very streamlined outside appearance. Especially the windshield slope of this design is extremely shallow. Furthermore the side walls with the long lateral windows slope up in a rather shallow angle of roughly 45 degrees. This leaves rather little clearance for people standing inside. Finally, there is a characteristic hatch at the aft end that is visible also from inside.

Star Trek: Insurrection

The cockpit of the Federation scout hijacked by Data in "Star Trek: Insurrection" is a redress of the interior of the Type-9 shuttle from Voyager. The two seats were replaced with a single seat, and the aft end of the set was modified to allow Worf to enter from the docking hatch. Also, a wall with an octagonal opening was inserted between the seat and the aft compartment. The scene filmed for "Insurrection" largely avoids to show the ceiling of the set and the characteristic windshield that does not quite match the exterior of the scout.

However, we get a glimpse of the front window at one point, revealing it is indeed the same as that of Type 9. The controls are still the same as well.

VOY: Endgame

Naturally the Type-9 cockpit set was also re-used for Janeway's similarly shaped shuttle SC-4 in VOY: "Endgame". For this version, extensive modifications to the consoles were made that would persist throughout some later appearances. The changes most obviously concern the central "console column". This part protrudes further on the top and does not have two illuminated consoles above the monitor any longer but only one somewhat taller console. The large consoles on the left and on the right of the central column don't exhibit the indentation directly left and right of the column any longer, in which a horizontal console is located. Instead, there is a continuous console on the left and on the right that is slightly curved.

ENT: Canamar

The next appearance of the cockpit set is as the cockpit of the Enolian prison transport in "Canamar". Here, further modifications to the set were carried out. We can make out some remnants of the SC-4 modifications. The Enolian cockpit too has a non-animated smaller console and a somewhat larger monitor below, just as in the SC-4 shuttle. Just as the later Tellarite cockpit, the Enolian version comes with overall more push buttons (reflecting an older technology). The roughly triangular cockpit window was considerably reduced in size for the Enolian set and hence matches the outside of the ship.

star trek shuttle type 9

In "Canamar", on the other hand, it was no option to use the aft section of Type 9. The large prisoner section had to be built as a new set.

ENT: Bounty

The exterior of Skalaar's Tellarite shuttle in "Bounty" (both the mock-up and the CGI) is based on the eponymous design from the Voyager episode "Alice" . The cockpit of Alice bears a resemblance to that of the Type-9 shuttle, especially as the rear entrance hatch is concerned. Still, is is newly built set.

star trek shuttle type 9

The cockpit of Skalaar's shuttle, on the other hand, is based on the Type-9 Starfleet set.

star trek shuttle type 9

Curiously, the Tellarite shuttle set includes two small lateral windows that are smaller than on the Type 9 but that don't exist on the Tellarite CG model.

Comparing the central cockpit column of the SC-4 and Enolian cockpits with the one of the Tellarite shuttle, we can notice that it was made smaller yet again. It does not have the small non-animated LCARS display any longer but a monitor already relatively far on top. Furthermore the whole column was shortened and is now not longer than the rest of two forward facing consoles. This has a simple reason: The cockpits of the Type-9 shuttle, of Janeway's shuttle and of the Enolian prison transport were two-seated, whereas Skalaar has only one seat. The central column that served to separate the seats of the pilot and the co-pilot needed to be cut down in size in order to allow the pilot to occupy a central seat. In the forward area of the cockpit there are also two lateral consoles that protrude into the cockpit. These consoles were not present in the previous appearances of the set.

star trek shuttle type 9

The middle part of the cockpit was constructed especially for this episode and seamlessly connects to the already existing part. Only on the starboard side we can see a door. The opposite side does not seem to have a door, although we can see the port door on the CG model. The shuttle even docks with the Klingon ship using the port hatch, as seen from the outside, while the Klingons enter the set through the starboard hatch.

star trek shuttle type 9

The aft part of the Tellarite shuttle set is interesting because it is another redress of the Type-9 set. So it is clear that the set was cut apart, and a new central part inserted to enlarge the set. As the aft section of the Type-9 shuttle was similar to that of Alice anyway, especially concerning the opening mechanism of the hatch, that part of the Type-9 set was suited for the Alice-based Tellarite design too. However, the aft hatch is not used in "Bounty" because some kind of "engine hood" is located here that can be seen from outside.

ENT: Stratagem

The life-size model of Alice and its CG version appeared in "Bounty" for the last time. The large cabin built for the Tellarite ship in Bounty and based on the Type-9 shuttle, however, reappeared as the cockpit of the Malosian cargo ship in "Stratagem". We can also see the Malosian set from the outside, which in this case is a set also in-universe, because the whole scenario is only a deception created by the Enterprise crew. Moreover, we are shown the "real" look of the spacecraft on displays. The look of this shuttle has rather little still in common with the Tellarite ship.

The forward area of the cockpit was slightly modified yet again. The large window was completely covered and all consoles were changed. The small windows are no longer recognizable. As this spacecraft is two-seated again, a new protrusion of the central console was created. The lateral console on starboard is still the same orientation as on the Tellarite shuttle, whereas the port console was turned by 90 degrees.

star trek shuttle type 9

There are some changes to the central part of the set that we don't investigate in detail. The starboard hatch now sports a window, outside of which there is a monitor that creates the impression that the shuttle is out in space. It is opened at one point in the episode.

The aft part of the ship is still clearly recognizable as the aft part of the Type-9 shuttle. It is also noteworthy that after not using it in "Bounty" the aft hatch is opened again.

star trek shuttle type 9

We get an impression of how the Malosian shuttle mock-up looks from outside (keeping in mind that it is just a mock-up also in-universe and does not have to match with a real spacecraft). We can see that the design is streamlined a bit like the Type 9 and has a characteristic aft section.

star trek shuttle type 9

The schematics of the "real" Malosian shuttle have little in common with the Tellarite shuttle. The wings of the Malosian version are a lot wider, and the outer engines are far apart from the main hull. The whole ship appears very streamlined. The size and proportions of the cockpit are still similar to those of Alice. Just as in the appearances of "Alice" , there are two engines on the port and starboard aft of the ship. In place of the hatch, however, there is one additional fifth central engine. This is not consistent with the interior set that clearly has an aft hatch. Because of the wing placement it is also hard to make out or to imagine where the lateral hatches may be located. So there are several discrepancies between the set that the Enterprise crew built and the graphic that is perhaps more closely based on a really existing Malosian ship.

ENT: The Council

We can see the forward part of the Type-9 cockpit one last time in the Enterprise episode "The Council" in a Xindi shuttle ("Degra's shuttle"). The aft part is closed by a new wall so we can't recognize the familiar details of the Type 9 in this area with the characteristic door.

star trek shuttle type 9

The two consoles that were added for Skalaar's shuttle are still in place. They still have the same configuration as in "Stratagem".

The big windshield was opened again after "Stratagem". The consoles were "Xindified" style-wise but otherwise remain unchanged. We can see a large monitor on top in the middle console. The exterior of the Xindi shuttle (a new CGI, not based on Alice) matches that configuration: a large window and a small aft area.

PlutoTV is part of the Paramount Global portfolio of services, and as we’ve reported before , the ad-supported free streaming service has multiple Star Trek series that run on their “Star Trek” and “More Star Trek” channels. PlutoTV has been streaming Star Trek: The Original Series , The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager on those two live Star Trek channels. This week, PlutoTV launched a third channel in the USA, solely dedicated to a Deep Space Nine . This is a first for Trek on PlutoTV.

3 live Trek channels

Adding a channel just for DS9 is part of Pluto’s 10th anniversary celebration:

In April, we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary in a big way, welcoming a dedicated Deep Space Nine channel to our growing Star Trek lineup and more.

The Deep Space Nine channel is already up and running next to the two other Trek channels…

star trek shuttle type 9

Pluto now has 3 Trek channels

Pluto’s original Star Trek channel is now dedicated to streaming episodes of TOS and TNG. For now the More Star Trek channel is streaming episodes of  Voyager .

Trek on demand

In addition to episodes being shown on live-streaming channels, select seasons of Star Trek: The Original Series ,  Star Trek: The Next Generation , Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , and Star Trek: Voyager are also available on demand.

Star Trek plays a big part for Paramount’s free streamer. Periodically Pluto has Star Trek movies streaming live and on demand. And when new seasons of Paramount+ original Star Trek shows arrive they often use their “Paramount+ Picks” channel to stream season premiere episodes for free.

Pluto TV’s advertisements often feature Trek in some manner. This includes their most recent “Couch Potato” advert which aired during the Super Bowl.

And back in October, Pluto TV had this TNG-inspired advertisement

Pluto TV is available on the web at pluto.tv , and via apps for smart TVs, consoles, and mobile devices.

The Shuttle Pod Celebrates The 30th Anniversary Of ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’

As a kid, I used to tell my friends if there was a 24/7 Star Trek: Deep Space Nine channel, I would absolutely tune in regularly.

I think my kid self just called my bluff.

I watch Star Trek on Pluto TV nearly everyday.

Same here. It’s great to have on ‘in the background’ while making dinner, etc.

Someone can dedicate an entire channel to Deep Space Nine, but the owners of Deep Space Nine can’t convert it to HD? To quote a droid from another franchise, “This is madness!”

I feel you but like hear me out

I think one of these things is far more expensive than the other

There’s an old adage about gratitude that goes something to the effect of, “If you find yourself having to walk for miles because your car broke down, try to remember how many people would be thrilled to be able to take that walk.” In this case, if your vision is good enough to make a real distinction between standard-def and HD, be happy you can see that well. Many others can’t, myself included.

Damn, that really sucks, Michael. Is it cataract-related or something less treatable? I’m always worried about vision myself, given the connection between diabetes and blindness.

The Pluto news is pretty good, as I still haven’t gotten season 5 on dvd, which is where my favorite Eddington show appears, plus the baseball card episode.

My vision has been terrible for my entire life, with myopia so severe that it lands me in the top 95th percentile. The good news is that it’s been correctable, so while I was never going to fly the space shuttle (or anything else) I’ve been able to wear contacts that allow me to drive and do just about everything a person with normal vision can do. It’s gotten somewhat worse lately, where I’ll now be in the ridiculous position of having to wear glasses on top of my contacts to see things up close, but that’s my particular burden to bear and I’ll deal with it while still indulging my passion for photography. I’m 65, am in mostly good health, still have the greater percentage of my hair and can press 200+, for all of which I’m grateful. Don’t cry for me, Argentina. 😊

I actually got a doctor’s excuse to get out of swimming in high school owing to what he described as my 20/500 vision (I think it was a bit less than that), saying I’d keep colliding with the pool walls unless the school wanted to make me prescription scuba masks (oddly enough, I met up with my dad later that same year and found out he actually did have a prescription scuba mask for snorkeling, which I guess makes sense given he lived in Hawaii and was probably as nearsighted as I was.)

In Canada Pluto has one Star Trek channel and the play TOS and TNG on it. They’ll play roughly 4 or 5 TOS episodes then same amount of TNG episodes and keep rotating.

Yeah, I am envious of those in the US because they not only have two channels plus the new DS9 channel, they also have TOS, TNG and DS9 on demand. To top it off, Pluto US also has a Stargate channel showing episodes of SG1 and Atlantis. Up here we have one live only channel of TOS and TNG.

That said, I guess I should not complain because CTV Sci-Fi channel does show multiple episodes of TOS, TNG, Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise along with SG1 throughout the week and weekend mornings.

Here in Australia our pluto.tv doesn’t have any Star Trek

Thanks for keeping things in perspective. Hopefully sometime soon, Pluto adds a Trek channel to their lineup down under.

Wow great news! I’m amazed how popular DS9 has become the last few decades.

Yup pretty cool. IMHO DS9 is perhaps my favorite series competing head to head with TNG followed by TOS. SNW is also up there too, but not quite in the league with the top 3!

I recently fully rewatched the series (first time since it aired and I was a wee child glued to it) and I can’t honestly say I know what I think of it. Season four and five were almost exclusively excellent and the rest was ups and downs, save for season seven which was almost complete garbage. I loved the best of it and couldn’t stand a lot of it. Do I love the show?? I don’t even know. It left a bad taste but when I look a bit further back I remember how much I loved some of it…and I’m glad it’s getting some love b/c I think the best of it is among the best of Trek. But I can’t say I want to go back to this style of making a season of television. 🫠 I’d love to see some of the available characters again, though, some kind of follow up that did away with the worst flaws. (I do need to read the comics.) (And in case anyone wants to do the toxic nostalgia song n dance, I only did that rewatch b/c modern Trek star Tawny Newsome talks DS9 up at every opportunity. And overall it left me so grateful for the modern era and newly appreciative of the work done in the past. And pleased that I’ll get more of the references in Lower Decks now I’m refreshed, lol)

I agree, for the most part. Season 7 is not garbage and had some of the best episodes, but the final 10 were rough. But I think that is what left that “bad taste.”

If were to rank the 7 seasons of DS9 from best to worst:

4 5 6 3 7 2 1

That is how I feel now, but that could change after another re-watch.

Nothing wrong with liking what you like. I happen to think that the best of DS9 was as good a Star Trek as we’re ever likely to get, but that doesn’t mean the series as a whole was anything like perfect.

I still haven’t seen several trill-oriented eps because the whole subject doesn’t speak to me. Doesn’t stop me from being blown away by a number of great and good eps, though.

am thinking by season, it would probably be, top to bottom: 4 6 3 5 7 2 1

Looks like the “More Star Trek” channel is now the Star Trek: Voyager channel. So DS9 and Voyager both have their own “new” channels.

I would imagine Pluto’s unpausable live streaming format probably doesn’t work the best for DS9’s serialized nature. But definitely can cater to the fan wanting o drop in and “trek channel surf”

Pluto needs the ability to pause live content . Even if it’s a max of 15 mins. You can do that with current cable.

Right it’s literally like watching over the air TV before VCRs were created. No ability to pause or even ” record ” what your seeing.
