Tripadvisor Announces 2021 Travellers’ Choice Awards

Tripadvisor®, the world’s largest travel platform, has announced the winners of its annual Travellers’ Choice® Best of the Best Awards for Destinations.  

Divided into four categories, the awards reveal where travellers ventured in 2020, while travel was open, as well as where they dreamed of going while the pandemic kept them stuck at home.  

Bali takes top spot in the Popular Destinations category, rising from fourth place last year. It dethrones London from the top spot, relegating the capital to second place.  

St Ives in Cornwall is named fifth in the world’s Emerging Destinations list – the places travellers want to visit next – and is the only UK destination to be featured. Topping the list is the Caribbean island of Martinique, followed by Panama City Beach in the United States and Brazil’s Armacao dos Buzios.

In another victory for Yorkshire this year, York ranks 22nd in the world’s top Trending Destinations . This category recognises destinations that saw the biggest increase in positive ratings and reviews over the last year, meaning they actually grew in popularity during the pandemic. Cabo San Lucas in Mexico tops the list, while Corsica in France and Doha in Qatar take second and third place respectively.  

Finally, in the very first year that National Parks are featured in the awards, The Yorkshire Dales National Park takes the title of Europe’s best and 11th in the world. The Peak District National Park places fourth in Europe and 24th in the world and continuing the UK’s success in this category, the New Forest National Park in Hampshire takes the fifth spot among Europe’s best. In a very different vein, the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania was voted the world’s best.

Tripadvisor announces the winners of its 2021 Travelers’ Choice “Best of the Best” Restaurants awards

The title of U.S. No. 1 Fine Dining restaurant goes to the  Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Va . This intimate restaurant boasts an award-winning 14,000 bottle wine cellar (what’s not to love about that?!) and serves up classic French cuisine including dishes such as carpaccio of herb-crusted Elysian Fields baby lamb loin with Caesar salad ice cream and coconut sorbet with passionfruit and ginger granité.

If quality food on the go is what you’re after, the Quick Bites category (previously named Fast Casual) fits the brief and this year it’s  New York City’s Bleecker Street Pizza  topping the list. This much-hyped pizza joint knows a thing or two about serving up a decent slice.

New this year, the Picture-Perfect Restaurants category celebrates those places that have a serious wow factor, not just for the food, but the restaurant setting as well. These stunning spots are worth a thousand selfies and it’s not surprising to see why  Koral Restaurant in Nusa Dua, Bali  has been crowned world No. 1. At this epic aquarium restaurant, you’ll feel as though you’re dining underwater as tropical fish swim around and above you and a hypnotic soundtrack plays to give the full below the waves experience.

If you’re looking to set the mood with a romantic dinner, the Date Night category – another newbie for 2021 – has you covered. Topping the U.S. list is  The Silver Fork in Manchester, Vt. Located in the picturesque Manchester Village, The Silver Fork is housed within the historic building which was once the Mark Skinner Library. This quaint restaurant is run by a husband and wife team and serves up an eclectic mix of cuisines from around the world including goat cheese soufflé with chutney and homemade melba toast and mixed paella for two.

Today, Tripadvisor, the world’s largest travel guidance platform, announced the first of its annual community-powered Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2022: the Best of the Best Destinations.

Despite new variant surges, data shows that the desire to travel remains stronger than ever. In fact, 71% of Americans in a recent Tripadvisor sponsored survey say they are likely to travel for leisure in 2022. Just as travelers are ramping up on their plans for the year, the 2022 Travelers’ Choice list is here to identify the best places to go.

“As the world returns to travel, priorities are changing, and people want more memorable experiences on their trips. Three-quarters (75%) of Americans say that it’s important they ‘see new places’ when thinking about their future travel plans,” said Steven Paganelli, Director, Destinations, Hotels and OTAs, Americas at Tripadvisor.

“There is a whole world out there to choose from, and we want to help guide travelers looking to take the best trips for them – whatever that perfect vacation may look like. From adventure to R&R, Travelers’ Choice Awards for Destinations include several subcategories created to reflect the best places to go no matter what type of trip you’re after.”

On the Popular Destinations list, highlighting the highest-rated and most loved spots around the globe, Dubai has officially dethroned perennial icons like London, Paris and Rome for the crown of the Most Popular Destination in the world for 2022. In the U.S., Las Vegas is No. 1 for travelers this year, taking the crown over another long-time traveler favorite, New York City.

New favorite place to travel: Trending Destinations are locations around the world seeing the greatest year-over-year growth in reviews and ratings – including everywhere from dreamy beaches to places full of architectural wonders.

Majorca, Spain is the No. 1 Trending Destination in the world for 2022. More than a spring break hot spot, it offers picturesque seaside coves, children’s beaches and grandiose Moorish architecture, younger crowds and families. And the neighboring island of Ibiza ranks at No. 6.

After previously winning the 2017 TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for the world’s best destination, Bali returns on bringing the prize for 2021’s most popular destination by the renowned travel planning and booking website.

Now in 2021, Bali beats other world-famous destinations like Dubai, Rome, and Paris as presented in TripAdvisor’s official website on Tuesday (26/1/2021). This Indonesian paradise even overtook last year’s throne winner, London, United Kingdom.

Bali also ranked 1st in the most popular destination list in the Asia region, winning against top list countries like Vietnam, Thailand, and Cambodia. Referred to as “a living postcard, an Indonesian paradise that feels like a fantasy ” by TripAdvisor, Bali proves to be a crowd favorite in Asia.

TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award brings together a list of iconic places, presenting top of the radar wish list of international tourists. The award is based on an algorithm of saves, reviews and ratings worldwide. They took account of the quantity and quality of the country’s hotels, restaurants, and attractions for 12 months, rewarding 25 outstanding places around the world . This year they showcased four 2021 Award Winner categories, including most popular destinations, trending destinations, emerging destinations, and national parks.

Along with being the front-runner in the world’s most popular destination category, Bali snagged spots in other categories, too. Kelingking Beach ranked #4 and Nusa Dua Beach ranked #21 on the list of Asia’s Best Beaches.

Laurel Highlands, Pennsylvania

If you love the great outdoors, you’ll be smitten with Laurel Highlands, which sits in southwestern Pennsylvania. It’s approximately 3,000 square miles and includes three counties: Fayette, Somerset, and Westmoreland. Visit Fallingwater, which is recognized as a National Historic Landmark and one of architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s most acclaimed works. For thrill-seekers, book a white-water rafting excursion in Ohiopyle State Park. The park also offers numerous challenging hikes where you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views.

Mackinac Island, Michigan

Between Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas, you’ll find Mackinac Island, where you’ll ride on horse-drawn carriages along car-free roads, observe fudge being made (and then sample it), and tour the historic Fort Mackinac. This Lake Huron-based continental island is also home to Mackinac Island State Park, where you can hike, bike, kayak, and take photos of the local natural beauty, including the stunning limestone Arch Rock.

Ocean City, Maryland, is the quintessential beach town, offering laid-back vibes, old-fashioned boardwalk treats, and beautiful sandy beaches. Head over to a bustling arcade, get in line for a thrill at Trimper Rides, or simply sit back with a good book and dig your feet into the sand.

Ocean City, New Jersey

This family-friendly vacation spot on the Jersey Shore is known for its exciting boardwalk, with shops and eateries galore, views of the Atlantic, plus vintage amusement parks. Playland’s Castaway Cove is one such park, with go-karts, thrill rides including roller coasters, a fun house, and mini golf. And if parks aren’t your thing, there’s miles and miles of relaxing beaches on which to get in some sun and swimming.

San Juan Islands, Washington

While there are some 176 islands and reefs that make up the San Juan Islands, the main four — San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw — are serviced by the state ferry system and offer accommodations for tourists. While these islands are diverse and offer different experiences, they all feature spectacular vistas of the Salish Sea, with plenty of water and land activities to keep everyone busy. Accommodations range from hotels and resorts to small inns, vacation rentals, and camping sites.

Sandusky, Ohio

Home to Cedar Point amusement park, which has over 150 rides and attractions, Sandusky is an ideal family-friendly vacation spot. The town is also home to a picturesque downtown with art galleries, boutiques, and a thriving culinary scene. Visit the Maritime Museum of Sandusky for a look at the city’s history, or head to the Sandusky State Theatre and take in a performance.

Sevier County, Tennessee

Sevier County, Tennessee, is widely known as a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the most visited national parks in the United States. Three towns are ideal spots for setting up base camp while visiting the region: Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg. Offering everything from picture-perfect scenery to Dollywood to the state’s only ski resort, there's plenty to see and do in the area.

South Rim - Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Probably the exact location you're picturing when you think of the Grand Canyon, the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park is an iconic American destination worthy of many a bucket list. Check out Grand Canyon Village during a visit, which offers a range of attractions and accommodations. It’s also the site of the Grand Canyon Railway Depot, which is still in service today and takes visitors on a scenic ride, where you might spot wildlife such as elk, deer, and mountain lions.

Space Coast, Florida

Situated on Florida’s Atlantic shore, the Space Coast area is recognized as the home of the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, where Apollo 11 lifted off for its moon landing mission. The region is also a hub of activities, including water sports, cruise excursions, fishing, and golfing. It's also a great spot for lazy beach days.

Swain County, North Carolina

Swain County, home to charming Bryson City, is a gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The area is overflowing with hiking trails, scenic waterfalls, golfing, and water activities. You'll find opportunities for tubing, as well as white-water rafting, with the Nantahala Outdoor Center offering 500 acres of adventure.

Virginia Beach’s 3-mile long boardwalk is a major draw for those that visit this town, known for its maritime history and family-friendly appeal. It comprises three beach areas: Virginia Beach, Chesapeake Bay, and Sandbridge Beach, which stretches for 35 miles, making it the world’s longest pleasure beach in the world. With a flourishing downtown and amazing restaurants, Virginia Beach makes for a great summer escape.
