These two boats were both designed by the manga and anime artist Leiji Matsumoto, who is famous for his work on Space Battleship Yamato and Space Pirate Captain Harlock . Fares for the Himiko and Hotaluna are higher than for regular boats. Sumida River and Asakusa Cruises

Enjoy relaxing area around Sumida river

Kasia Szumna

When visiting Asakusa, you have to see the Sumida river. Its wide banks and monumental bridges impress every tourist. The view is stunning and it is a perfect place to relax and sit for a moment. You can have lunch while watching boats passing by or just take a walk along the shore and enjoy the closeness of the water.

One great thing about Sumida river is that you can cruise it by ship. Tokyo Cruise offers futuristic looking boats to take you for a ride along the Sumida river. There are a few routes. Sumidagawa River Line is the shortest one and takes you to Hamarikyu Gardens, Hinode Pier and back to Asakusa. Tokyo Big Sight-Palette Town Line brings you to the most popular Odaiba spots. If you are in a hurry, there are some direct lines to Odaiba too. You can make a reservation online. To buy tickets right before the departure, go to Tokyo Cruise Center in Asakusa. It is a modern pier with a small cafe to order drinks while waiting for a boat.

Mizube Line, also called Tokyo Waterway line, belongs to another company and provides a slightly longer ride with more stops to Odaiba and Askakusa. They also navigate around the Arakawa river, Odaiba area and Kasai Rinkai Park. Other than general transportation service, they offer many special cruises to enjoy cherry blossoms in Spring and fireworks in Summer. Chartering of water-buses is also available. Boat rides can take up to two hours and they are a great way to see Tokyo from a different perspective.

The banks of the Sumida river are also perfect for jogging, cycling and family walks. It is a different way of sightseeing; sometimes more relaxing as the river side is usually less crowded than popular tourist venues. Some sites like Asahi Breweries building, Tokyo Skytower or charming houseboats are easier seen from the river bed. When strolling along the river, you should definitely stop at the Sumida Park. Another interesting spot, located in a walking distance from Asakusa, is Ryogoku Kokugikan, the place where sumo tournaments are held. When visiting Tokyo, you definitely have to see Sumida river!

Himiko cruise

The leiji matsumoto boat ride in tokyo.

Himiko Cruise is a themed boat ride on the Sumida River, between Asakusa and Odaiba in the east of Tokyo. The futuristic setting was designed by famous manga artist Leiji Matsumoto.

When traveling in the Japanese capital, it's impossible not to cross the vast Sumida River flowing down eastern Tokyo . Along several stations of the Yamanote line (from a few hundred meters), Sumida river can be appreciated in Asakusa and Ryogoku, up to Hama-Rikyu gardens and Tsukishima where it flows into Tokyo bay before arriving at Odaiba . Sumidagawa is very present in Tokyo, and of course cruises are organized, especially by Suijo and its famous " Tokyo Cruise " which includes a dozen shuttles.

Himiko Cruise (Tokyo), The boat lit-up at night

Futuristic design boats

For fans of Japanese popular culture , the most attractive of them is undoubtedly Himiko, named after the eponymous queen. This boat has a peculiarity: it was designed by mangaka Leiji Matsumoto , father of Yamato , Captain Harlock , Galaxy Express or Interstella (for Daft Punk). This is what explains the ship's unique design (both outside and inside) and the special atmosphere of the cruise, getting a very strong footprint from its master.

Thus, there are countless keys of his artistic touch, from the glass ceilings and Ginga Tetsudô figures, to commentary made by some of its original voice actors. Note that there is a slightly improved version of Himiko boat, called Hotaluna , which allows to go up on the deck if the weather permits.

Himiko Cruise (Tokyo), Night view on Rainbow Bridge from the pier at Odaiba Seaside Park

Going to Odaiba by the sea

The rate charged to take advantage of this particular trip is not cheap, but it offers a moment to share and allows to cut off a tiring tour of Tokyo. To reach Odaiba from Asakusa for example, this is a fun alternative to train  🚅 transfers. By day, the view is excellent on several monuments, such as the Rainbow Bridge, and changes the angle of approach.

Visit Tokyo by boat for less than 6 euros!

Very popular with tourists when the good weather returns, Tokyo Bay cruises are a good way to discover the Japanese capital.

Fun and unusual, cruises in Tokyo offer another point of view on the city and allow you to discover the little secrets of the river routes of the metropolis. However, these cruises are generally not accessible to all budgets. And the prices go up very quickly when it comes to admiring the Tokyo Skytree from the bay.

Fortunately, some cruises offer quite affordable alternatives to the large pleasure boats that operate on the Sumida. This is particularly the case of the ''Asakusa-Hinode Pier'' cruise from the Tokyo Cruise company , which connects Asakusa to the Hinode pier, and which offers to go up the course of the Tokyo River for only 780 yen per person. (5.98 euros) !

"TokyoCruise" or the madness of cruises in Tokyo

Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River offer many opportunities to experience Tokyo from the waters.

With a dozen shuttles each day , these cruises grouped together under the name of " Tokyo Cruise " allow you to discover the city from many angles.

Whether you pass through historic sites such as Hama-Rikyu Gardens or cruise along the bay to admire the colors of the Rainbow Bridge on a summer evening , " Tokyo Cruise " allows you to discover the beauty of the Japanese capital , where temples and cherry trees in flowers mingle with the twinkling of the buildings in the business districts.

  • Read : Along the Sumida River

Les jardins de Hama-Rikyu vus du Cosmo

Our activity to discover the Edo gardens in Tokyo

Two types of boats thus circulate on the waters of the capital: the yakatabune , traditional barges whose lanterns and tatami floor will delight boaters looking for the picturesque, and the nôryôsen , small , more modern cruise ships .

  • See also : yakatabune

The journeys are then very varied and can be done day or night , further increasing the tourist possibilities that Tokyo Bay has to offer.

Yakatabune

The yakatabune also welcome visitors in the afternoon for lunches and walks along the water.

Gastronomic dinners with champagne , cocktail evenings, or even yukata evenings in July, special events are even organized throughout the year by the company.

Lasting two to three hours , these ''luxury'' cruises have a cost. And it will generally be necessary to pay between 4,000 and 10,000 yen per person (between 3 0.70 and 76.76 euros ) to hope to benefit from it.

  • See also : yukata night cruise in Tokyo

Fortunately, some cruises offer much more affordable circuits!

Like the ''Asakusa-Hinode Pier'' cruise, which offers a ''lightning'' tour of the bay in 55 minutes for less than 800 yen ( 6.14 euros ).

Discovering the Sumida

A tasty mix between the yakatabune and the nôryôsen, the C osmos used for the cruise is a small barge 15 m long which aims to be modern and functional. With a basement for dinners , a cabin to admire the view when it's gray, and an open roof , this small pleasure boat is ideal for the more modest tours offered by " Tokyo Cruise ".

Departing from Azumabashi Bridge (Asakusa) , the "Asakusa-Hinode Pier" cruise travels along the Sumida River to Hinode Pier before looping back to Asakusa Old Quarter.

A nice route, which allows boaters to discover the beauties of Tokyo's most famous river.

From the Hama-Rikyu gardens to the Tokyo Skytree via the St-Luke Garden , a complex of buildings of fifty floors each bordering the Sumida, this cruise is as pleasant by day as by night .

Le Cosmo

gototokyo.org

And it is one of the activities not to be missed in the spring, since it offers an unobstructed view of the cherry blossoms that line the banks of the capital.

A little advice, however, if you want to make the most of the cruise: remember to board just before sunset! This will allow you not only to enjoy the view of Tokyo by day on the outward journey, but also the joys of the bay illuminated by the buildings and the thirteen bridges that the Cosmo crosses on the way back.

Visiting Tokyo: The Ultimate Asakusa and Odaiba 1-Day Itinerary

  • Written by: Matt Vachon

Though most commonly portrayed as a cutting edge, futuristic city, Tokyo manages to seamlessly blend Japan’s timeless history with its ultra-modern present-day form. This beautiful juxtaposition is perhaps best experienced at two of Tokyo’s most popular destinations; Asakusa and Odaiba . For the savvy traveler, taking a cruise down the Sumida River is the best way to take in both locations while enjoying scenic skyline views along the way. For the perfect mix of old and new, try our 1-day itinerary of Asakusa and Odaiba .

Start: Asakusa - 9:30 AM

1. senso-ji area - 10:00 am - 1 hour, 2. nakamise-dori - 11:00 - 45 minutes, 3. nishi sando shopping street - 12:00 pm - 30 minutes, 4. asakusa culture and tourism center - 12:45 pm - 20 minutes, options for extra time, 5. asakusa → odaiba: river cruise - 1:25 pm (trip takes approximately 70 minutes), 6. odaiba - 2:35 pm, what to do in odaiba, recommended hotels in asakusa.

Start: Asakusa - 9:30 AM

As you will be travelling by the Suijo Bus river cruise, reserving tickets should be your first priority. The cruise is very popular and tends to sell out quickly, so leave yourself as much time before your desired departure as possible. If you are not able to reserve tickets online ahead of time, plan to arrive at the Tokyo Cruise office by 9:30 AM when they open for business. Tickets are ¥1560 for adults and ¥930 for children. View https://www.suijobus.co.jp/en/price/ for more details.

1. Senso-ji Area - 10:00 AM - 1 Hour

From the giant red lantern suspended over the entrance to its towering five-story pagoda, Senso-ji is an iconic Tokyo landmark . As the city’s oldest temple , walking its storied grounds feels a bit like stepping back in time. Before entering the temple , stop by the jokoro; a large incense burner located near the entrance, to fan some of the smoke onto your face and hands. According to Japanese tradition, this is done to purify yourself of illness before entering the temple . Then, stop briefly by the nearby fountain to wash your hands, and you will be ready to experience Senso-ji temple like a local. After visiting the temple ’s ornate interior, take some time to explore the surrounding area. Nearby, you’ll find beautifully hand-carved statues, a small koi pond, and Senso-ji’s lesser-known neighbor, Asakusa Shrine .

Between the train station exit and Senso-ji, you will find yourself walking along a narrow (and often crowded) street lined with stalls selling everything from pastries, to plum wines, to maneki-neko dolls. This famous path, known as Nakamise-dori, is a great spot to pick up some Japanese souvenirs and sample the local flavor. Street food classics such as yakisoba and takoyaki are a must-try. Also, be sure to satisfy your sweet tooth with ningyo yaki, a sweet cake shaped into traditional Japanese imagery and filled with red bean jam.

Located just a couple minutes on foot from Senso-ji, Nishi Sando is a covered shopping arcade adorned with lanterns and traditional decorations often seen at Japanese festivals, as well as a wooden walkway; all of which create a unique and inviting atmosphere. This is another great spot to search for unique Japanese souvenirs including handmade fabrics , swords, and even authentic yukata; a traditional garment worn in the summer .

The Culture and Tourism Center may not sound like the most exciting stop on the list, but it is well worth the visit. From its unique exterior designed by famous architect, Kengo Kuma, it becomes immediately apparent that this is not your typical dry, boring information center. While it does house a great deal of information about the surrounding area and Tokyo in general, the real draw is the 7th floor observation deck that offers gorgeous views of Asakusa from above. It’s the perfect place to escape the crowds and snap some impressive travel photos.

If you’ve decided to take a later cruise and have a little extra time on your hands, here are a couple other experiences you may enjoy. Guided Rickshaw Tour - 30 Minutes to 1 Hour Sightsee like royalty from your own private rickshaw on a guided tour of Asakusa . Your guide/rickshaw driver will to some of the area’s key landmarks and even act as your own personal photography while teaching you about Asakusa ’s history. Various packages are available based on what you would like to see and how long you would like the ride to last.

World Beer Museum - 1 Hour Despite the word “ museum ” being in the name, the beer lovers amongst us may find the World Beer Museum inside Solamachi (at Tokyo Skytree ) to be more of a religious experience than an educational one. Serving up more than 150 rare beers from around the world, this inviting pub atmosphere is the perfect place to relax before your next stop. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of options to choose from, let the helpful staff recommend something you are sure to enjoy.

5. Asakusa → Odaiba: River Cruise - 1:25 PM (Trip Takes Approximately 70 Minutes)

The trip from Asakusa to Odaiba will find you on one of two boats; either the Himiko or the Hotaluna. Both boats look like futuristic starships that forgot how to fly, but vary slightly in their features and in what route they take to Odaiba . While both boats ultimately dock in Odaiba Marine Park , the Himiko will make a brief stop at Hinode along the way. On a day with clear weather, you may want to opt for the Hotaluna, as it offers a small roof deck where you can enjoy the view in the open air. If you prefer to ride inside, the Himiko features a small cafe which serves unique sweets and cocktails during the journey. Sights to See Along the Way During the trip from Asakusa to Odaiba , you’ll come across several notable and picture-worthy spots. 6. Odaiba - 2:35 PM

Located on a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, Odaiba is one of Tokyo’s newer and more popular areas. With so much to see and do, fitting it all into one day can be difficult. Luckily, we’ve handpicked some of the best activities to round out your afternoon.

Fuji Television Building Observation Deck - 2:45 PM - 30 Minutes While most observation decks in Tokyo are located in central parts of the city, the Fuji Television Building observation deck has the advantage of being located outside the city skyline; offering a unique perspective of Tokyo that is not often seen. While here, be sure to check out the interactive exhibit that compares the Tokyo skyline of today to the view from several hundred years ago.

Trick Art Museum - 4:00 PM - 90 Minutes If you’re visiting with a friend, the Trick Art Museum is the perfect place to snap some unforgettable photos. Here, 3D drawings and careful perspectives come together to make you part of the artwork. The museum is located in the DECKS Tokyo Beach building, and is open everyday from 11:00 AM till 9:00 PM. Tickets are ¥1,000 for adults, ¥600 for children, and free for children under 3 years old. Takoyaki Museum - 5:45 PM - 30 Minutes A staple of Japanese street cuisine, takoyaki is diced octopus that is battered, fried to crispy perfection, and often topped with a variety of condiments. It’s popularity is exceeded only by its variety, and the Takoyaki Museum in Odaiba is the best place to find many different styles of takoyaki all gathered in one area. Be sure to stop by Aidu-ya, the Odaiba sister store of the Osaka shop credited for creating the first takoyaki , to experience where it all began. Takoyaki is perfect for sharing, so grab a few different types and have a taste test with friends. The Takoyaki Museum is located on the 5th floor of the DECKS Tokyo Beach building, and is open from 11:00 AM until 10:00 PM. Tokyo Ramen Kokugikan Mai - 6:30 PM - 45 Minutes For something a bit more filling, head to Tokyo Ramen Kokugikan Mai. Much like the Takoyaki Museum , you’ll be able to choose from different types of ramen representative of styles from all over Japan. In addition to traditional ramen , you can also find tsukemen here; a version of ramen where the noodles are served on the side and dipped into the hot broth before eating in order to preserve their chewy texture. The Ramen Kokugikan Mai is located on the 5th floor of AQUA CiTY Odaiba and is open from 11:00 AM until 11:00 PM. Oedo- Onsen Monogatari - 7:30 PM - 90 Minutes As the theme for the day is the merging of classic and modern Japan, enjoy the best of both worlds at Oedo- Onsen Monogatari. A self-described “ onsen theme park ”, the spa was designed to capture the charm and antiquity of Edo period Japan. Relax in a hot bath while taking in the skyline views over Tokyo Bay.

Rainbow Bridge - 9:00 PM Though you will have already seen it on your trip into Odaiba , Rainbow Bridge truly lives up to its name once the sun goes down. At night, the bridge is illuminated with colorful lights, making for a memorable photo opportunity.

Asakusa () is the center of Tokyo 's shitamachi (literally "low city"), one of Tokyo's districts, where an atmosphere of the Tokyo of past decades survives.

Asakusa's main attraction is Sensoji , a very popular Buddhist temple , built in the 7th century. The temple is approached via the Nakamise , a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries.

Asakusa can easily be explored on foot. Alternatively, you can consider a guided tour on a rickshaw (jinrikisha, literally "man powered vehicle"). A 30 minute tour for two persons costs around 9000 yen . Shorter and longer courses are also available.

tokyo boat tour asakusa

For many centuries, Asakusa used to be Tokyo 's leading entertainment district. During the Edo Period (1603-1867), when the district was still located outside the city limits, Asakusa was the site of kabuki theaters and a large red light district. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, modern types of entertainment, including movie theaters, set foot in Asakusa.

However, large parts of Asakusa were destroyed in the air raids of 1945. And while the area around the rebuilt Sensoji has since regained its former popularity, the same cannot be said for Asakusa's entertainment district . The opening of the 634 meter tall Tokyo Skytree , a twenty minute walk across the Sumida River from Asakusa, has led to an increase of tourists again.
