Theatre Trip with Jigsaw Arts Stevenage!

  • Published Date: July 8, 2024

Theatre trip to see ‘Dreamcoat Stars’ brought excitement and fun to the eldest students at Jigsaw Stevenage ! School Owner and Manager Shannen shares their experience below…

On Friday 17th May, the wonderful staff and students at Jigsaw Stevenage ventured outside of our usual Jigsaw walls for our first group theatre trip – and it was a hit! Promising our younger students that they would not be left behind. Once they enter the interesting world of ‘teenage-hood’ they too could join us on , as they called it, ‘parent-free trip out!’

The theatre trip to see the show ‘Dreamcoat Stars’ was quite the experience! At the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage; a touring group of vocally gifted ex-West End men singing every Musical theatre hit you could imagine. Along the way through the show, each of the stars told their own jokes and personal stories. Our students were standing and waving their arms! Singing at the top of their lungs and even sending in questions to the stars from the audience – with a shout-out for Jigsaw Stevenage !

Staff and students all enjoyed a fantastic evening of laughs, gorgeous vocals and plenty of drama (a tooth falling out and far too much sugar!). We can’t wait to arrange our next theatre trip now. Who knows where we will end up and what we shall be seeing?! Stay tuned to find out soon… Join Jigsaw Stevenage for their upcoming Autumn show term, on our two week trial! Online bookings are open for all ages 3 up to 18 years.

The Seagull

Written by Anton Chekhov (translated by Ronald Hingley)

Thursday 4th May to Saturday 6th May and Tuesday 9th May to Saturday 13th May 1989

Directed by John Scadding

The first production of this play was a complete disaster - and it has been popular ever since! Anton Chekhov was the Woody Allen of his century and this everyday story of people round a lake in the 1890s is about the nuisance of love and the comedy of tragedy

Author Anton Chekhov

Anton chekhov (1860 - 1904).

Born in Southern Russia of humble origin, Chekhov studied Medicine at Moscow University, and while there, in order to support his family, he turned to writing. He graduated in 1884 and shortly after leaving turned to drama, although he was to continue to practise medicine for the rest of his life. The production of the Moscow Arts Theatre of his play 'The Seagull' in 1898 was the first to achieve the delicate balance of tragedy and comedy which is Chekhov's most individual contribution to drama. However, his originality also consists of an early use of the stream-of-consciousness technique, combined with a disavowal of the moral finality of traditional story structure. Another revolutionary quality in Chekhov's work was that his plays were written for a team of actors rather than for one or two star principals and supporting cast.

Translator Ronald Hingley

Ronald hingley (1920 - 2010).

Ronald Hingley produced his acclaimed translation of Chekhov's stories in the 1960s and rose to become Emeritus Professor at St Antony's College, Oxford. He was praised, in particular, for the attention he paid to colloquial speech, reflecting Chekhov's ability to capture all facets of Russian society. Inspired in his boyhood to learn Russian after reading the Catherine Garnett translation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's 'The Brothers Karamazov', Ronald Hingley later devoted his life to the study of Russian literature and political history. Hingley described himself as "a teacher by trade and an academic not a professional author." Although his scholarly activity has embraced literary criticism, translation, political analysis, and the examination of broad literary trends, Hingley's biographical work is perhaps most worthy of note. His major effort in biography, and certainly his best-known work, is 'A New Life of Anton Chekhov' (1976) and he was the foremost translator of Chekhov's plays.

Play The Seagull

The Seagull was written in 1895 and first produced in 1896. It dramatises the romantic and artistic conflicts between four characters; the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina, her son the symbolist playwright Constantine and the famous story writer Trigorin. The play takes place on a country estate owned by Sorin, a former government employee with failing health. He is the brother of the famous actress Irina, who has just arrived at the estate with her lover, Trigorin, for a brief sojourn.

The opening night of the first production was a famous failure. The actress playing Nina was so intimidated by the hostility of the audience that she lost her voice. Chekhov himself left the audience and spent the last two acts behind the scenes. However, later, when Constantin Stanislavsky directed it in 1898 for his Moscow Art Theatre, the play was a triumph and it has been performed all over the world ever since.

The Bench Production

The Seagull poster image

This play was staged at Havant Arts Centre, East Street Havant - Bench Theatre's home since 1977.

Director's Notes

'The Seagull' is the third play by Chekhov which the Bench Theatre Company has mounted - and it doesn't seem to get any easier!

Chekhov's own individual mixture of the passionate and the ridiculous continues to be the very devil to capture. No wonder there is a temptation to simplify his plays and leave out the ridiculous and go for the sad and sentimental. Or just to act quirky and to hell with the heartache.

Well, here we are again, after 'The Cherry Orchard' and 'The Three Sisters', having another go at getting the mix right.

We hope you enjoy the struggle

John Scadding

Programme Notes

Anton Chekhov was born the third of six children. His father ran a corner shop in provincial Russia. After going bankrupt, Papa Chekhov fled to Moscow, leaving young Anton at home to fend for himself and sell the saucepans. He eventually joined the family in Moscow, where they lived next to a brothel, then underneath a dance hall, and eventually in a nice flat paid for by Anton, who sold funny words for balloons in Moscow comics.

He became a medical student, sold comic short stories, and invited Tchaikovsky to tea, who played the piano. Anton's first assignment as a doctor was to pull a girl's tooth out. The doctor nearly fainted. He consequently wrote more and more stories and doctored less and less.

He bought a small country estate south of Moscow where he lived with his parent and two dachshunds called Morphine and Strychnine.

He spent most of his forty four years of life trying to kid himself he didn't have galloping consumption. When he finally admitted it, he married an actress who bought him three new suits and took him to Germany. He died in a hotel opposite the post office drinking champagne at two o'clock in the morning, just as he wished it.

His body was taken back t Russia in a railway truck marked "FOR OYSTERS ONLY". At Moscow railway station, his coffin got mixed up with a famous general's, and he was accompanied to the cemetery by a full brass band and a military escort.

His four main plays are considered some of the greatest ever written. The first of the four is called 'The Seagull'.

Opera and ballet in St. Petersburg: essential tips for theatre lovers

  • #Saint Petersburg

A visit to Saint Petersburg would be incomplete without seeing some good old classic art, regardless of what sort of cultural experience you prefer. After seeing the masterpieces of Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Titian, and an extensive collection of the impressionist paintings collected by Russian industrialists, it is totally worth visiting one of the city's gorgeous theatres.

The northern capital of Russia historically played an important role in the history of ballet and opera, with some of the shows seeing full houses not only in Russia but all over the world. The repertoire goes far beyond the world-famous Swan Lake, a ballet composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky in the last decade of the 19th century. If you feel interested in spending an evening in the opulent interiors of the historic theatres, here are some useful tips and recommendations you might need before visiting opera or ballet in Saint Petersburg.

  • How to dress

theatre trips from stevenage

Dressing up before visiting a classical play might seem tricky, however, St. Petersburg has quite a democratic approach to the looks of its guests. Same as you may visit any of the top restaurants in the city dressed in jumper and jeans, you may prefer any of your regular outfits to a dress (or a suit jacket) when going to the main theatres.

The diversity of the looks in the theatres of St. Petersburg will surprise you just as much as the ballet itself. While some of the visitors could come all dressed up, with women wearing evening gowns and strings of pearls, the students or the office workers would wear the same outfit they did during the day. Having an all-black look always seems a good idea, though.

  • Where to eat

theatre trips from stevenage

It would be nice to have a hearty meal before going to see a ballet or an opera, as the play may last up to four hours and the local buffets are quite special. In case you find yourself eager to grab a bite during the intermission, make sure you take enough cash to buy drinks and food. Normally the buffets located in the theatres do not accept credit cards.

Locals enjoy such cafes despite the fact that they are a bit overpriced, so don't be surprised when you see a long queue. The most traditional way to spend an intermission is to have a champagne glass and a sandwich with caviar. In this regard, not that much has changed since the 19th century.

There is a lifehack for Mariinskiy theatre café: you can make a pre-order before the start of the performance and you will have a table reserved for you and the order prepared in the beginning of the intermission. If you do not book in advance, you may wait in line for the whole break. Please, note that theatre cafes accept only cash, but usually have ATMs.

  • What to watch

theatre trips from stevenage

The language barrier is a great problem for those who want to enjoy the play in the country of visit. That's why it is always better to choose ballet or an opera instead of a theatre piece. When it comes to Saint Petersburg, it's always easy as all the main theatres play their performances with subtitles.

When you decide what to watch, you might find yourself a bit confused seeing the same performances in various theatres. The thing is that Mariinsky, Alexandrinsky, and Mikhailovsky theatres — the main pillars of local St. Petersburg's cultural life — are constantly struggling for leadership and audience, which is why Swan Lake, for instance, can be seen in both three.

Rather than choosing a play, you might choose the theatre you want to visit instead. Mikhailovsky, founded in 1833, is located right next to the State Russian Museum. Its interiors are classy and old-fashioned, but an extensive renovation finished in 2018 makes you feel like you went back in time. Same with Alexandrinsky, whose history goes back to 1756. The decor is as posh as it was in the golden age of Russian classicism, but the recent renovation has made it even more gorgeous.

The old stage of Mariinsky, in its turn, has not been renovated for ages. Its dark hallways seem to be designed for those who want to immerse themselves into the Russian Zeitgeist. Nonetheless, the theatre has another option for the admirers of modern architecture and innovative theatre. The new stage, built just a few years ago by a Canadian architect Jack Diamond, is a nice example of how St. Petersburg is evolving and changing its historic appearance.

As for the particular plays, it might be worth seeing The Nutcracker and Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky, Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin, Le Corsaire, and Giselle by Adolphe Adam. In case you like modern art, try visiting The Four Seasons in Mariinsky with its stunning choreography and scenery.

  • How to buy a ticket

Most of the modern Russian theatres sell tickets online on their websites, each of which has an English version. You can easily switch to it by clicking "English" in the upper right corner of the page. Otherwise, the tickets can be bought directly at the theatre's booking office. Beware of the profiteers and never buy any tickets from people who claim to be working in the theatre.

In case you purchase a ticket close to the date of the performance, normally there are not many seats left. Don't be afraid of choosing the balcony seat: the view will be just perfect, and during the intermission, each visitor can easily take a walk through the stalls to make pictures.

That's it! Have fun and enjoy your visit to the world-renowned Russian ballet and its beautiful dancers. And don't forget to get your champagne and caviar.
