As much as I talk about wanting to live on a sailboat but the truth is I’ve never been on a sailboat for longer than a day trip. So when the opportunity came up for a three-day sailing trip through Belize with Raggamuffin tours, I had to find out if the sailor life is the life for me. Spoiler alert: It’s awesome!

Raggamuffin Tours, based out of Caye Caulker, runs a three-day sailing tour from Caye Caulker to Daidringa (never in reverse). There are over 265 Cayes (pronounced keys, meaning island) in the waters of Belize, which means there is an awful lot of exploring to be done.

Raggamuffin tours take you on an epic journey snorkeling, fishing, and island hopping through some of the most beautiful spots in Belize. In this post, I’ll go over what you can expect on a Raggamuffin tour to help prepare and make the most of the tour!

Ps. This post is not sponsored by Raggamuffin Tours. I paid for this tour myself!

How to Book a sailing trip in Belize with Raggamuffin Tours

To find out more information about Raggamuffin tours, read reviews, or book a tour visit their website or the tour office in Caye Caulker . If you knowf the dates you want to take the tour then I recommend booking it in advance, as they do book up especially during peak season (mid-November to mid-May).

In typical fashion, I booked my trip to Belize only a few days before my flight departed. I contacted Raggamuffin right away to request the trip only to find out they were full. However, they advised me to visit the office when I arrived in Caye Caulker, in case someone canceled. It wasn’t until the last minute, literally minutes before they departed, that one person didn’t show up and I was able to take their spot. Thanks, Mark!

The cost of the tour is $400 USD which is all-inclusive. You can pay part of this on credit card but they require you to pay at least $100 in cash. The cost of the tour covers everything, as they supply all food, booze, activities, and accommodations.

Caye Caulker

The Raffamuffin tour office is in Caye Caulker , Belize, about a 5-minute walk from the main pier. Caye Caulker is a small, laid back island. You can walk or cycle around the entire island, there are no cars there!

Getting to Caye Caulker : Take a taxi to the ferry terminal in Belize city from the international airport. The cost of the taxi is $25 USD, which is a government-set price. At the ferry terminal, you can catch a boat to Caye Caulker which takes about an hour. There are a number of companies that run and the cost of the ferry is $25 USD Return. It is possible to book online in advance,  but the boats are so frequent that you won’t have a problem to show up and catch one.

Where to stay:  The first time I visited Caye Caulker I stayed at  Dirty McNasty’s Party Hostel . This place is exactly as it sounds. If you want a party hostel, it can be a good time, but otherwise, I’d recommend somewhere else. This time around I stayed at  Yuma’s House , which has much more of a chill vibe. It’s still a social hostel, but you can actually sleep there.

Day 1: Departure from Caye Caulker to Rendezvous Caye

The staff will ask you to be at the office at 7:30 am if you have a large-sized bag so they can store it under the boat. If you only have a small-sized backpack then you can take it on the boat with you and show up 8:30 am instead.

They don’t provide breakfast that morning so grab something in Caye Caulker before you go. Right next to the Raggamuffin tours office is a lovely cafe called Ice and Beans. They do great Iced Lattes and bagels!           View this post on Instagram

I was traveling solo but met one of the guys on the same tour while diving, so we boarded the boat together and met our fellow sailing mates.

I expected the crowd to be mostly backpackers, as this was the case in the other boat trips I’ve taken through the San Blas Islands and with TAO in the Philippines. However, Raggamuffin tours is somewhat different.

There were a representative number of backpackers, but also three families on the boat, so the age range was anywhere from 16-50! All the said we all got on well with each other and had a great time. I mean can you really go wrong with endless rum, sunshine, and a sailboat?

Raggamuffin tours from caye caulker

We got to know each other quickly as the crew hands out generous amounts of never-ending rum punch. But if you want to have some time to yourself, there’s space for that too.

There is a catamaran at the front of the sailboat which seems like the prime spot to be, but it’s also the riskiest spots in terms of getting sunburnt. The safest spot is at the back of the boat to where the captain sits, it’s fairly shaded there. You can go to the inside of the sailboat but there isn’t much space to move around. Luggage and supplies take up the rooms and the kitchen is occupied by the chef making amazing food, so you don’t want to disrupt him!

So, what can you do on the sailboat besides drink rum?

Raggamuffin tours take you to some pretty epic snorkeling spots. Belize has the largest second barrier reef in the world, and the coolest part about taking a sailing tour is that you get to stop at several marine reserves that aren’t easily accessible otherwise.

I feel like diving has kind of ruined snorkeling for me, but even these sites impressed me. During our snorkels, we saw spotted eagle rays, stingrays, turtles, and many beautiful and healthy coral reefs. We also saw dolphins from the boat!

One of the snorkeling spots is next to Goff’s Caye, a beautiful little island that you can swim to and explore.

Goffe's Caye island

If you love to fish then this trip is for you. They have hand lines, trawling rods, spin rods and a spear gun on board, and encourage you to fish while we sail through the waters. The crew are also legends at spearfishing and will take groups to try it out during snorkeling stops.

I’m not into fishing, but the people who participated loved this aspect of the trip. Plus, you’ll become everyone’s favorite if you catch something yummy to eat! Whatever you catch become’s the chef’s ‘catch of the day’ special, and gets served to everyone at supper. Don’t worry – there’s still lots of food to eat even if no one catches a fish!

Learn to sail

The crew is happy to teach you some tips about sailing and can definitely use a deck-hand if you want to get involved. The captain of the boat, Jerry, is an awesome friendly guy.

Rendezvous Caye

The first night we slept on Rendezvous Caye, which is not much more than a sandbar and a few palm trees. There aren’t any structures on the island so the crew brings tents for everyone along with sheets. Our group was at the max size which meant some people had to share a tent, but there were a few people that got their own. The tents are easy to set up and the crew is there to help you if you need it.

Rendezous Caye on a Raggamuffin tour

We arrived at the island just before sunset so we all got to watch the beautiful Caribbean sunset from our own private island. After another delicious meal, the booze keeps flowing on the island and we all had a great time. I loved getting to camp on our own island. Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean, waking up to the sun, talk about paradise!

Day 2: Rendezvous Caye to Ragga Caye

The sun will wake you up bright and early for the second day where you will continue the journey from Rendezvous Caye to Ragga Caye. The activities on the second day are much the same as the first. Two stops for snorkeling, plus fishing, lots more rum, and just relaxing on the boat.  Don’t worry about being bored as the three day sailing trip is well-broken up by snorkeling stops and island exploration, so you never feel at sea for too long.

The second day we got to visit Tobacco Caye, where there are actually a couple of restaurants/bars. Everyone was excited to get some cold beer, and there were a few dogs on the island which excited me. After talking to the owners the restaurant I found out that you can actually stay on Tabacco Caye and go diving from there. This seems like it would be a cool experience and I’d love to try sleeping there for a few nights if I go back to Belize.

Visiting Tobacco Caye with Raggamuffin tours

Later that afternoon, you arrive on Ragga Caye where you spend the night. On this island, they have structures set up to sleep in so you don’t have to camp. There are three private bungalows which you can pay extra to reserve, it’s $100 per couple. There are only three cabanas and they book up quickly so make sure you tell them in advance! Across from the bungalows, there is a building with four separate dorm rooms, each with two bunk beds inside it.

ragga caye on a raggamuffin tour

If you don’t want to stay in the dorms you also have the option to set up your tent from the night before anywhere on the island. But the dorms are nice. Actually nicer then some hostels I’ve stayed at, so I was happy to stay there.  No one on my crew bothered to set up a tent the second night. The biggest advantage of getting a private cabana is that you get your own bathroom. The dorm folk share two washrooms and they got gross, fast.

sunset at ragga caye

Ragga Caye also has a kitchen/dining area, so the chef prepares an even more impressive meal for everyone that night, followed by, of course, more rum. One of the aspects I was most impressed about on this tour was the quality of the food that the chef was able to prepare. He had a two-burner stove confined in a tiny sailboat kitchen yet fed us meals with 8 components. Meanwhile, I struggle to make rice at home! 😛

Day 3: Ragga Caye to Dangriga

After having breakfast on Ragga Caye the crew takes you on a small tour around the area. The first stop is a small island full of frigate birds which you can admire from the boat.

From there, we visited a manatee reserve area. I was SO excited about this, but disappointingly, we didn’t see any manatees that day. It is nature after all, and there are never any guarantees.

After the manatee reserve, you have the option to go for a final snorkel followed by a stop at Saltwater Caye. This beautiful island has a sand bar that goes out into the ocean which just looks like perfection. We all floated in the turquoise water soaking up the final piece of paradise!

Salt Water Caye with Raggamuffin Tours

After all the fun in the sun, you sail back to Ragga Caye for a final lunch and then two speedboats come to pick everyone up to take you to Dangriga. The speed boat takes about half an hour.

Where to go after Dangriga

It doesn’t seem like there’s much going on in Dangriga and no one from my tour stayed there afterward. Most people went to Hopkins or Placencia, which are about one to two hours away, respectively.

There are local buses you can catch about a 15-minute walk from where the boat drops you off, or you can arrange a taxi/shuttle. I didn’t book any transport in advance but as soon as I got off the boat I met a local who was driving to Placencia, and he took me and my friend for the cost of the bus!

Placencia is a nice town and the spot to be if you want to try your luck diving with whale sharks. If you want to go diving in the blue hole , head back to Caye Caulker or San Pedro!

Another place you could head after is San Ignacio, just two hours away and home to some impressive Mayan ruins. Or if you’re on the Central America backpacker trail, head over to Guatemala, a country full adventure!

Tips to make the most of your Raggamuffin Tour

Sea Sickness – No one on my tour was badly affected by seasickness but a couple of people including myself felt nauseous on the first day (could have also been the beers from the night before…). The crew has seasickness tablets on the boat but they made me super sleepy. Another girl on my tour had these motion sickness patches that you place behind your ear and swore by them. Might be worth it if you’re prone to seasickness!

Insurance – No one likes to think about something bad happening on vacation but the truth is they can and it’s important to protect yourself in case of an emergency. If an accident happens and you have to be taken back to the mainland to go to the hospital then it’s not going to be cheap so protect yourself with travel insurance.  I recommend World Nomads as travel insurance for Raggamuffin Tours as they cover a wide range of adventure activities, and are easy to claim with (speaking from experience)!

Extra food/booze – I didn’t bring any snacks with me and at no point did I regret that. The chef does an amazing job of preparing three meals a day as well as mid-afternoon snacks (ceviche). They also have chips and cookies which get handed out throughout the day.

I wouldn’t bring snacks unless there is something specific you want. As for booze, unless you only want to only drink rum then I recommend bringing your other drink of choice. They do supply you with generous amounts of local rum and mix (coke, Fanta, sprite, juice, etc.) but it’s super sweet and I got sick of it after a while. A couple of people on my boat brought beers in a cooler and I was super jealous.

Cash –  You don’t have to bring much cash with you on the trip. There are two islands you visit on the tour where you can buy  drinks and a few souvenirs but that’s it. Bring some cash to tip the guys at the end and for the bus/taxi onwards from Dangriga.

What to bring –  It’s no problem to bring all your bags on the sailboat but the crew will store large-sized bags under the boat, and you won’t be able to access them during the trip. Pack what you need for the three days in a smaller bag which you will have access to. Here’s what I recommend bringing on a Raggamuffin tour:

Packing List for Raggamuffin Tours in Belize

  • Suncreen – Bring so much sunscreen! The Caribbean sun is hot, hot, and hot and I’ve never seen as many people get sunburnt as I have on this trip.  I was constantly applying it and still got burnt. Bring more sunscreen then you think you need!
  • Sarong – great for lying on the beach and protecting you from the sun.
  •  Sun hat & Sunglasses
  • Towel – A towel for after swimming. I recommend the microfiber towels as they pack super light!
  • Moisturizer/after sun
  • Insect repellant
  • Refillable water bottle – I love hydro flask because they keep your drinks cool for 24 hours
  • Reusable Straw – Straws are great for drinking out of coconuts but the plastic ones are terrible for the environment. Take a reusable straw on your trip to cut back on your environmental footprint!
  • Clothing: 1 – 2 pairs of shorts, 2-3 tops, 2 – 3 swimwear,  & 1 pair long sleeve shirt/pants for mosquitos
  • Fins if you want them for snorkeling (masks and snorkel are provided)
  • Sandals and Reef Shoes (the corals can be painful), and rash guard for snorkeling if you want extra protection from the sun
  • Kindle – The sail boat is the perfect place to kick back and relax with a good book. Safe on space and bring a kindle with books downloaded beforehand. Plus the new Kindle is waterproof so you don’t need to worry about getting it wet!
  • A deck of cards for playing games at night
  • Portable battery bank  –  I love this one because it’s small and can charge your phone up to six times!
  • A camera to capture the moment! GoPros are great for snorkeling.
  • An open and adventurous mind!

Raggamuffin Tours:

Barrier reef, raggamuffin tours:  sailing adventures in the belize barrier reef.

Bandannas at the ready? Hand over your flip flops and hop aboard the  Raggamuffin  Tours sailboat. Prepare for 3 days of the pirate life – spear fishing for your dinner, sleeping on desert islands, and drinking unlimited rum. Sound good? It’s even better when you’re living it.

It’s time to embark on the adventure of a lifetime as you set sail from the shores of Caye Caulker, Belize, and head out into the Caribbean Sea. Bask in the sun from the hammock at the front of the boat, and enjoy the refreshing sea spray that’ll cool you down and remind you that you’re not dreaming.

Discover the Belizean Barrier Reef

You’re part of the Raggamuffin Tours crew now, and every vessel needs some man power to keep it sailing in the right direction. Try pulling up the sails or fishing from the back of the boat. As the crew will tell you from the beginning – the more you put into this, the more you’ll get out of it.

Stop a few times each day to jump in the big blue and snorkel the vibrant shallow reefs. The crew will even guide you in the right direction and point out some cool sea life along the way, from colourful corals to playful manatees. Try your hand at spearfishing, because where else can you have a go? Catch something for dinner, or do your bit to keep the overpopulation of lion fish in check.

Island Hopping in the Caribbean

As the sun sinks into the sky and the rum punch starts flowing, your paradise island Rendezvouz Caye awaits. Pitch a tent with an ocean view, and talk all things travel and beyond over an incredible buffet style dinner. The catches of the day are cooked to perfection by the skilled Raggamuffin Tours on board chef, and carefully paired with delectable sides.

Who knows where the night will go from there. With rum punch still flowing and the energy of the ocean surrounding you, don’t be surprised if you end up dancing in the moonlight before falling asleep under a sky full of stars.

Wake up the next day and hit the hangover cure breakfast before setting sail for another day of snorkeling and adventures. Crystal clear waters and white sandy beaches are on today’s agenda, all leading up to the island that you will call home for the night.

Ragga Caye really is special. Tonight you can opt for a bed in a newly built beach hut, or even a private over-water cabana. Given how perfect the nights are here, it was hard to turn down another opportunity to spend it under the stars, so camping won our vote. With hammocks in the trees and kayaks to take out around the caye, the afternoon will fly by. Of course, the rum punch has been flowing again, so spirits are high (literally), and the group games have begun.

If you’re looking for an experience to remember, the  Raggamuffin  Tours 3 day tour is for you. As an all inclusive trip you don’t have to plan a thing. The crew take care of everything, and go out of their way to make sure you have the best time. It doesn’t matter if you’re travelling solo, as a couple or in a group, you’ll feel right at home within minutes of getting on the boat, and will make memories that will last a lifetime.

“I’m on a 3 day sailing tour with Raggamuffin and after one hour I already know that this is the best experience I will have in Belize. Think a catamaran, the sun, a cool group of travelers and crazy crew, beautiful blue water, dolphins, snorkeling, Dancehall songs, endless glasses of rum punch, camping on deserted islands… It’s such an unforgettable adventure!”

To understand this vibe, you HAVE to listen to this song while checking out this must must must do. MUST DO. Trust me!

Where to start and where to end to describe this great journey? It’s going to be some story. Raggamuffin has put together this unique 3 day adventure to access the more remote and inaccessible parts of Belize’s reef. The water is always calm and super blue as they remain in the inner reef.

The tour starts from Caye Caulker and finishes in Dangriga, from where you can easily take a bus towards your next adventure. The trip is designed as an island hopping adventure for all those want to experience this uninhabited Caribbean paradise. You will spend the night on beautiful Rendezvous Caye and Ragga Caye whilst visiting English Caye, Tobacco Caye and South Water Caye. The vibe on the boat is amazing. Dancehall music, an hilarious crew, unlimited rum punch… I miss it.

During the day the sailboat cruises through Belize’s crystal clear waters and picture postcard scenery whilst stopping to snorkel at least twice each day. We took our drone – check out the pictures! Also cool: fishing is an additional element to the trip. They carry hand lines, trawling rods, spin rods and a spear gun. During the evening, the cook will prepare the catch of the day!

Rendezvous Caye is nothing more than a strip of sand and some palmtrees. It’s paradise! Here, you put your tent up right at the sand next to the ocean. How amazing is this? There is a non camping option the second night (on Ragga Caye) – next to camping you can stay in the simple dorm or book an over the water cabana (which we did!). Waking up here… No words.

The food is a pleasant surprise as they carry a chef on board the trip! In season they provide lobster and conch and throughout the year shrimp and obviously there is plenty of fish. For those who do not eat fish they can provide chicken and for vegetarians and those who are gluten intolerant they also have excellent menus – do not worry!

Good to know: The trip includes all taxes plus snorkeling and fishing equipment equipment, camping gear, marine reserve and island fees and last but not least food and (alcoholic) beverages! Believe me, it’s absolutely worth it. It’s by far the best experience I’ve had in Belize!

Sailing Tours

Our sailing tours we offer, 3 days & 2 nights tour, snorkel & sailing tour, sunset sailing tour, come sail with us on our, 3 days & 2 nights sailing tour.

This tour was created to take you away from the high traffic areas around Caye Caulker and Belize City to the remote cayes of the southern waters of Belize. The overnight is a sailing tour that is a one way trip. There is not a round trip, back to Caulker or San Pedro. Guests often use this change of location to explore the beautiful southern mainland of Belize and then eventually move onwards or come back to Caye Caulker. What is important to note in the structure of the journey gives the customer the maximum benefit to explore a large section of the reef over a short period of time. The tour sails entirely inside the inner reef where the calm waters ensure comfort.

Our guests sail off on an adventure of a lifetime at 9:00am from the Ragga Sailing Adventures office. Rendezvous Caye is the destination on the first day, but first Goff's or Sergeant's Caye with 2 snorkeling stops and fishing along the way. This day has the longest sailing times out of the three days (5-6 hours depending on the wind) as we make our way out of the well trafficked areas to the remote areas of more Southern waters. Rendezvous Caye we will set up tents and furnish them with our mats and sheets and the Chef will strike up the grill to cook the catch of the day. Sunset on Rendezvous Caye is truly spectacular and washed down with rum cocktails and ceviche, that is a memory that will last a lifetime.

Today we will make way to Tobacco Caye. Shorter sailing times for this day (4 -5 hours depending on the wind) with snorkeling at Colson Caye, Southern Long Caye Channel and Caye Glory with the loggerhead turtle and Caribbean stingrays. We stop for the night at the picturesque Tobacco Caye. Tobacco Caye is located off the Tobacco Caye range and located on Belize's barrier reef and has a unique charm like no other you will have seen. Here we still have the remote experience but we also have the added benefit with some creature comforts such as room or dormitory sleeping instead of tents. Once again the Chef will whip up a feast for all dietary needs and all washed down with local rum, gin or vodka drinks, juices, sodas and obviously water on tap. For those who want to upscale and have their own private shower facilities then we can offer either Ocean View rooms or over the water cabanas for an additional $100US per room. This will obviously depend on availability when making the reservation.

Last but not the least, day 3! We take the boat off the island for a long snorkel in the Channel off the beautiful South Water Caye and manatee watching. Passengers return in time for a BBQ lunch on the beach leaving sufficient time to rinse off before packing for the journey home. Departure will be at 2.30pm by motor boat into central Dangriga town, dropping off at the rivermouth by the Riverside Cafe. This journey will take 40 minutes and so the arrival time will be between 3:15 - 3:30pm (depending on how punctual departure time was).

Please note that the menu is fairly fish oriented however each evening meal we will add a chicken dish along with salad or veggie dishes and rice and or potatoes. When in season conch and fresh lobster will be served - shrimp throughout the year. All dietary requirements can be fulfilled as long as they are communicated to us in advance of the journey - nothing is too complicated! For those who have strong allergies to peanuts (there will be none on this trip) and for those with shellfish allergies, we are experienced in ensuring that the food preparation is perfectly safe for all guests. Throughout the day and night there will be water at all times - guests will be encouraged to drink water to avoid dehydration. Along with water we have juice and sodas. Alcoholic beverages are served at night with local rums, vodka and gin with all the necessary mixers. We do not carry beer with us on the trip as it requires too much refrigeration and that is impossible on a three day journey off the grid - sorry! However we can confirm that the bar at Tobacco Caye can serve some nicely chilled cold beers if guests prefer this rather than our selection.

The weather is a vital component to the trip's success however it is almost impossible to be 100% accurate about the weather. For a trip to be confirmed we need to have a forecast that can allow all passengers comfort. Cloud cover is not a reason to cancel a trip as clouds rarely stay around for more than a morning or an afternoon for us on the coast. However heavy rain for more than a morning or an afternoon is reason to either cancel the trip or even postpone. We also monitor the winds. Heavy winds with cool weather can make the trip uncomfortable but in the summer months the heavy winds can be great for sailing. Determining an accurate weather forecast will be done the eve of the trip, often in the afternoon. Generic apps that measure weather, however accurate in your home town, are not accurate for us along the coast. Let us take our experience to ascertain what is best. To do this we take advice from the Belize Met office in person, we take the time to call the Chief Forecaster directly and get their opinion. We reserve the right to postpone or cancel a trip if this information leads us to believe that the trip's success will be compromised due to the weather. This being said, most of the year we have good weather, with only rainfall at night and little or none during the day!

Returning to Caye Caulker or traveling after the trip can be facilitated through Floralia bus schedule, Tropic Air: flights schedule. or Maya Air: flights schedule.

Testimonials

What our clients say.

The three-day, two-night sailing trip was incredible! We did tons of snorkeling and saw so much sea life, both while snorkeling and sailing. I also really enjoyed camping on the remote islands - it was so peaceful to fall asleep to the stars. Hugo, Rob, and Linthon - our crew, captain, and chef - were awesome. Could not recommend this trip more!

We had the best day, sailing on the Raga Prince They made sure all of our needs were met. We visited shark ray alley, the coral garden, went spear fishing, snorkeling, ate the delicious lunch that was provided and learned about the many different types of fish that we saw in and around the barrier reef. It was a fabulous day all around!! We highly recommend Ragga Tours. Make sure to ask for Captain Kaylon and Guide Dwayne. You won’t be disappointed. Enjoy!

Marvin was an awesome guide for our trip. We met people from all over the world and had an awesome experience exploring the more remote islands in Belize. The trip was packed with sunbathing, snorkeling, spear fishing, fishing, and enjoying some rum punch. Ever was incredible and we couldn’t have done the trip without Linton & the spear fishing king himself - Juan! An absolute MUST DO for anyone visiting Belize!

Shane Anderson

Balancing professionalism and entertainment perfectly, Shane is a true favorite of everyone that has the pleasure of meeting him. He deservedly holds the position of Lead Captain within RSA specifically for the overnight tours and established himself this position through over 13 years in the industry. Shane's trademark infectious personality has him singing and dancing for his guests and if you're lucky he will do a backflip or two!

There is nobody like Captain Dane! His knowledge about Belize history and cultures, our reef and the environment, is second to none. Always professional, Dane has the heart of gold and over 15 years of experience guiding he brings so much to RSA and our team.

"Mush" cannot be underestimated as he is an excellent all round guide. For his slender size his personality is huge, his knowledge is boundless and his skills under the water are like Aquaman!

Sailing Down the Coast of Belize for 3 days | Raggamuffin Tours

No toilets, showers, or electricity for 3 days?

SIGN ME UP!

Well, that’s not exactly how things went down.

A few months before my trip, I was doing some research on things to do in Belize . I somehow stumbled on a 3-day sailing Trip down the remote Cayes(pronounced Keys) of Belize. I had a goal to try something new in each country I visited, so this seemed like the perfect fit.

I was hesitant though. Sailing for 3 days? The longest I’d ever been on a boat was for 8 hours and I was struggling with that. How would I manage to be on a boat for 3 days? What if I got sea-sick?

It’s hard for me to make a decision on anything like this without reading reviews, so I pulled up TripAdvisor. The trip had 5 stars and people were saying it was the highlight of their time in Belize. There was hardly any mention of the uncomfortable aspects that went naturally came along with sailing.

After a few days of contemplation, I emailed Raggamuffin Tours. I figured I could handle the small discomforts if all of these other people could. I arranged the trip and counted down the days until this new adventure. I could hardly believe it – I’d be island hopping in the Caribbean!

LEAVING CAYE CAULKER

On my 7th morning in Belize, I met at the designated dock to drop my bag off with the crew. On one hand, I was bummed to be leaving Caye Caulker . On the other hand, I was excited to go sailing for the first time.

We removed our shoes before entering the boat and never saw them until we left the boat on our final day.

An even mix of couples, friends, and solo travelers stepped onto the boat. I believe I was the youngest on board. The crew, all born & bred in Belize, welcomed us aboard the ‘No-Stress Express’ as we greeted each other.

I knew this was going to a good time when they pulled out never-ending trays of fresh fruit and buckets of snacks.

sailraggamuffinbelize-24.jpg

SMOOTH SAILING

On the particular day that we set off, the sun was shining in a perfect way – not too harsh, but just right. The Captain threw on some Reggae tunes and we started cruising.

We retreated into our own corners of the white sailboat, some of us on the deck above and some on the net hanging just at the front of the boat.

We were quite literally “smooth sailing”. I didn’t feel a hint of sea-sickness and I was way too relaxed to think about when my next shower would be. I spent time writing, reading, and thinking – all without distractions. This is a rarity in today’s world. I mean, I can hardly write this blog post without pulling up 8 tabs and picking up my phone to scroll on Instagram. So, it felt really good.

I’d often stare far off into the distance – in complete awe of the endless turquoise colored waves.

Was this even real life?

raggamuffin tours services

We’d watch the crew throw out their hook and line to catch what would hopefully be our next meal. They’d hand us spear guns, encouraging us to help them out. There was a tiny kitchen in the boat and Chef Larry would whip us up the best lunches, through some sort of sorcery.

Oh, and I haven’t mentioned the unlimited rum punch. It seemed that every hour the crew would yell out “RUM PUNCH!!!” and fill all of our cups to the brim.

We hardly had to lift a finger. The crew had it down. They told us our only job was to enjoy the views – above the water & below the water.

raggamuffin tours services

NON-STOP SNORKELING

We’d make frequent stops to snorkel. The crew would split us into groups, showing us the best places to spot marine life. I’m not the best swimmer, so I was often at the back of the pack. Some people were even free-diving. Let’s just say I sat that option out.

At one point, I found myself right above a stingray and I nearly died. See below.

A NIGHT AT RENDEZVOUZ CAYE

The sun & salt water definitely wore us out by the end of the day.

The boat slowed to a stop at Rendezvous Caye just before sunset. We were given tents and mats to pitch & set up on the white powdery sand. We had this tiny piece of paradise all to ourselves.

raggamuffin tours services

SLEEPING IN A TENT

This was my first time sleeping in a tent.

It turns out that I really enjoyed it – this was the first time I had a ‘room’ to myself after hopping from hostel to hostel for the past few weeks.

I was beyond happy to have my own little space, even if it was in a tent on the sand. It felt peaceful.

sailraggamuffinbelize-11.jpg

We gathered around the shore & watched as the blue sky slowly turned to a soft peach color. The sunset was absolutely breathtaking,

We all enjoyed a delicious dinner and got to know each other a bit more. Our group was pretty chill. It certainly wasn’t a party boat.

Most people headed to sleep earlier and a few of us stayed up to hang out on the boat with the crew. The crew was always in such good spirits so they were such a joy to be around. I spent a lot of time getting to know them and trying to learn about their life in Belize.

Just before bed, I looked up at the stars and found myself so thankful for these moments.

DAY 2 – TEARS AT SUNRISE

The following morning, I rose with the sun.

I opened my tent to a pink-ish sunrise and nearly cried.

Look at that moon!

STOPPING AT TOBACCO CAYE

On Day 2, we did more snorkeling and made a stop at Tobacco Caye. This is a 3 acre, egg-shaped island that holds a population less than 30 people. When we arrived, the adults were hanging out at the island’s only bar near the dock and the children were playing a game of volleyball.

The beautiful people of this tiny island wandered across the island barefoot – their dark skin glistening in the sun.

sailraggamuffinbelize-12.jpg

SLEEPING ON RAGGA CAYE

The snorkeling never stopped. We continued to explore the depths of the Caribbean sea.

My jaw continued to drop at every sight.

In between swimming, we were eating good and drinking better – to the sound of non-stop Reggae & Shane’s(the crew member with dreads) constant singing.

By the end of night 2, we arrived at Ragga Caye. Here, we had the option to stay in a cabana or sleep in our tents. I surprised myself by opting for a tent again. After another dinner cooked by Chef Larry, we set up our tents right under the night sky.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen stars so clearly.

sailraggamuffinbelize-15.jpg

BIRDWATCHING – WHO EVEN AM I?

On Day 3, we spent more time snorkeling. I told yall – I’ve never snorkeled so much in my life.

No complaints here though – it was incredible!

We even did a bit of bird watching. This was another first for me, and It was actually really fun! The crew never failed to show us the best of nature and wildlife.

sailraggamuffinbelize-18.jpg

THE FINAL DAY & VERDICT

By day 3, I felt so rejuvenated. Time had flown by, but I felt so grateful for this experience. I hardly recognized the negatives that I thought would be an issue before I decided to join this trip. Instead of seeing them as negatives, I saw them as simply being part of an unforgettable experience.I’m so glad that I didn’t allow those things to hold me back, because this ended up being the highlight during my time in Belize.

This place is what all restaurants and simulators should aspire to. The staff is attentive, fun, and patient, especially when it comes to setting up and tending to the simulators. I've been going here since they opened and through menu and staff changes the constant has been great service, food, and a stellar environment. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

Food and service are excellent. The new menu is mostly lunch items but still top notch.

Great, great, great place! The new menu is awesome. The food is consistently good. Service is good. I've been hoping for a restaurant with a basic menu with good food. They've nailed it! There is nothing negative about this place. It's a great place to watch a game or have a great meal with your family. It really is the "perfect" restaurant to sit at the bar or a table. Haven't had a bad thing on the menu yet. Nachos with chili, pulled pork potato skins, wings, pretzels all great apps. Burgers, wraps, Mac and cheese all great. Prices are very fair for the quality. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu. Fingers crossed this place stays in business. It's kinda slow, but the golf simulators are usually all being used. Go...You won't be sorry!

Tour is one of the consistently best restaurants in Portsmouth. My personal favorite is the Capresi pizza. Katie makes the best in the wood fired brick oven . My husband's favorite is The Arnold Burger. You can't go wrong whatever you choose. The service is always amazing ,and the manager Michael is right there with a friendly welcome. You can also sit by the or watch as other patrons practice on the golf simulators. Great food and entertainment, you can't go wrong.

We had wonderful evening at TOUR. We enjoyed drinks and appetizers while playing golf. Then moved to the bar area/restaurant and enjoyed a delicious dinner. The service was fantastic. Lex made great drinks. The pizza was delicious! We enjoyed the casual atmosphere.

TOUR Portsmouth opened fairly recently in the former Tuscan Kitchen building. The place looks very nice with a modern sports bar vibe and golfing theme decor They offer virtual golf simulators (4 spots/parties along the front wall, sort of like at a Topgolf), full long bar with high seating and plenty of flat screen TVs above, high top tables, booths (some with individual flat screen TVs), regular tables, private party rooms, plus an open kitchen, similar layout as it's predecessor. The food menu offers a variety of creative appetizers, sandwiches, salads, dinner entrees and desserts. The prices are moderate and slightly high. I stopped in at TOUR Portsmouth recently for dinner. I sat myself in a booth which had an individual flat screen TV with ESPN on. I perused the menu while I waited for the waitress to walk over to take my order.  I started out with an ice water and the Spiced Fried Cauliflower ($8), which had lightly fried cauliflower pieces, arugula, chimichurri drizzle, and shredded pickled vegetables. This was good and light, but it was not spicy. For dinner, the Wagyu Ragu ($18) had firm egg pappardelle noodles, basil, hand dipped ricotta, house-made ragu with Wagyu beef, very good and very similar to the short rib pappardelle dishes I've enjoyed at other area restaurants. This pasta dish was just right and not too heavy.  For dessert, the Apple Crostata ($10) was comprised of a hot baked firm flaky pastry shell filled with sweet & tart apples, cranberries, raisins and walnuts with a very minimal scoop of vanilla ice cream & caramel sauce. This dessert hit the spot. The dinner check for one was $40.15 with tax and before tip. I was able to pay online by scanning the QR code on the receipt. The food was solid good and the service was acceptable. During my dinner visit, I was able to relax and enjoy the laid back atmosphere and seeing several patrons practicing their golf game on the other side of the bar. They also offer bar service while playing golf. Perhaps, if I can gather some buddies, I can come back to try out the golf simulator here.

What can I say about Tour...the golf was fun and a great time. We (me +1) played 9 holes in an hour while snacking on some awesome apps (spicy teriyaki chicken wings & pretzel bites ). After we jumped over to the bar/restaurant area and enjoyed blue cheese burgers that were also delicious. I highly recommend Tour for a fun time with your buds or even as a date night. The rest of the menu looks amazing and I cannot wait to go back and try it all again!!! Enjoy.

Hosted a rehearsal dinner at Tour Portsmouth. The Bride and Groom wanted something casual and fun. Everything was excellent. We reserved the private event room, the executive simulator and simulator 4.. The atmosphere is comfortable and has a country club feel. We had the veggie and hummus appetizers, pizza party with the cookies for dessert. Everyone enjoyed the food and venue. The manager Mike helped coordinate everything by email and phone and always replied promptly and professionally. The servers did a great job keeping up with the drink refills. I thought the pricing was very reasonable. Fun, good food, drinks, golf , family and friends just perfect.

We were looking for a cool night with friends and we hadn't tried Tour. Last I knew it was a Tuscan Kitchen But it came and went pretty quickly because of the pandemic. Made a reservation for 5 for one of the simulators at 7:40 pm. We walked in to an empty hostess station and we're not sure what to do. After a couple minutes we kinda. Strolled in? Huge place. Excellent atmosphere, but absolutely dead for a Saturday night. I guess I am not sure when the busy days or times would be for indoor golf- dinner-and drinks tbh. The manager (super friendly and helpful guy)came over and got us set up with our simulator and gave us the full run down of how to operate the screen and everything in the simulator. They are actually VERY cool and huge sections. Plenty of room for 5 of us. There are bar tops and stools at each simulator. Almost like your own VIP box. We ordered drinks. Mimosas. A lemonade one. A whiskey drink. (Sorry I forget the names). All delicious. We ordered pretzel bites which were delish. A burger. Excellent. An order of spring rolls or egg rolls. All tasty and cleaned our plates. We will absolutely be back. A great place to do something different. Take a date. A bunch of friends. With really good food, drinks, and vibe.

Oasis reunion tour seen as win for economy - but perhaps not fans' pockets

Restaurants and bars are among those set to benefit from next year's Oasis comeback dates but there is already a worry that fans face paying through the nose if they need a place to kip.

The long-awaited Oasis reunion tour would represent a big boost to not only Liam and Noel Gallagher's respective bank balances but the UK economy as a whole, according to experts.

Confirmation on Tuesday that the warring brothers had put aside their differences to plan 14 dates - with two of those in Dublin - prompted a frenzy of interest in the British Isles and also overseas.

An investment analyst at AJ Bell said the 2025 stadium shows had the "potential" to bring as much as the £1bn cash injection a report by Barclays said the economy had enjoyed from Taylor Swift's recent UK dates.

Money latest: Half of young people doing 'big no-no' with holiday money

Dan Coatsworth wrote: "The Eras Tour superstar played many of the same venues as those booked for the Oasis tour and the number of concerts could also be similar if the band add extra dates to meet the expected high demand.

"Taylor Swift fans from across the globe descended on the country this summer, doling out cash on accommodation, travel, new outfits, food and drink, tickets and merchandise.

"Oasis should easily command the same fervour from the public, and spending on Cigarettes and Alcohol could be mind-blowing.

"The big question is whether the financial boom from Oasis' reunion is going to Live Forever. This looks like a big cash grab on behalf of the Gallagher brothers, but decades of hatred between the two individuals suggests the reunion might not have legs. Fans and the UK economy should enjoy it while it lasts," he concluded.

Oasis to perform live shows in 2025

The tour is due to begin in Cardiff, at the Principality Stadium, on 4 July with Manchester's Heaton Park and Wembley Stadium in London getting four dates each.

Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Dublin's Croke Park are the other two venues.

Joss Croft, chief executive of tourism trade body UKinbound, said major music events are "not only beneficial for the UK music industry, but a super boost for our inbound tourism, drawing visitors from around the world to experience the best of what the UK has to offer".

A Welsh Government spokeswoman said of the announcement: "It's great news that Oasis will be kick-starting their comeback in Cardiff.

"They'll be joining a long list of world-renowned artists who have chosen to play in our capital in recent years, along the likes of Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Coldplay, Beyonce and many others.

"With the Principality Stadium's reputation for hosting world-class events, the concert are set to attract thousands of visitors, which will provide a substantial economic boost to our hospitality, retail and transport businesses, bringing in millions and helping transform the local economy."

Sacha Lord, night time economy adviser for Greater Manchester, estimated the band's run in the city would benefit the city's economy by more than £15m, according to the PA news agency.

Thomas Pugh, economist at RSM UK, said the tour will "undoubtedly be a phenomenal sellout".

But he raised the prospect that fans face paying through the nose for accommodation - on top of the tickets.

"Taylor Swift and the Foo Fighters saw hotel prices in Cardiff, which will also host an Oasis gig, rise by up to 500%," he warned.

The rise was noted in official inflation figures at the time.

Sky News found earlier today that hotel prices for Oasis's first night at Wembley are already as much as three times as expensive as the week before.

Ticket prices are yet to be announced but with only 14 dates they could prove pricey, especially on resale sites.

Some were even being offered as prizes ahead of going on general sale at the weekend.

Sky News has seen at least one company, The Giveaway Guys, offering a pair in a raffle thanks to a "trade partner" in Manchester.

Its website showed the two tickets for an Edinburgh show had already sold out.

Baylor College of Medicine, University of Houston Awarded $44.2 million to Create Regional Hub for Translational Research

By Bryan Luhn — 713-743-0954

  • Health and Medicine

$heroAlt

Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Houston have been awarded a $44.2 million Clinical and Translational Science Award Program grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Research to create a regional hub to serve as a support for infrastructure, services, community engagement and workforce development to advance research and drive innovation in clinical translational science.

Key Takeaways

  • $44.2 million grant to BCM and UH establishes the Consortium for Translational and Precision Health, a regional hub to support clinical translational research.
  • The CTPH builds on the partnership between BCM, UH and other clinical and research groups within the Texas Medical Center to foster innovation in areas such as basic science, health services pharmaceutical sciences and entrepreneurship.
  • Hub will connect researchers with community health care organizations and government agencies, creating a multidisciplinary environment that supports infrastructure, services and workforce development to advance health care solutions.
  • The CTPH will provide funding and resources for pilot projects and research initiatives, helping to accelerate the translation of new technologies and discoveries into patient care and population-level impact.
  • Draws on expertise from 10 UH colleges, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, optometry, engineering and others, highlighting the comprehensive institutional commitment to improving population health outcomes.

This new hub is called the Consortium for Translational and Precision Health (CTPH) and builds on the strong partnership between UH and BCM along with the clinical and research groups within the Texas Medical Center that collaborate with these two institutions. It draws on strengths from both institutions in basic science, translational research, health services, pharmaceutical sciences as well as entrepreneurship to develop and disseminate innovations. The CTPH also will connect investigators with community healthcare organizations and government agencies that contribute to healthcare, clinical research and policy in the region.

“This transformational grant for clinical research, led by Baylor and UH, will advance care for patients in Houston and beyond,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of BCM. “It will accelerate the transfer of new technologies to patient care.”

“Research is the engine empowering health care’s life-changing advancements,” said UH President Renu Khator. “This innovative hub will be a catalyst for groundbreaking discoveries and treatments that improve people’s quality of life. That’s what drives us at UH and we’re ecstatic to cofound a regional hub for change alongside Baylor.”

beech_spiff.png

The leaders for the CTPH are Dr. Christopher Amos, professor and director of the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) at BCM, Dr. Fasiha Kanwal, professor of medicine and chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology at BCM, and Dr. Bettina M. Beech, clinical professor of population health and the chief population health officer at UH.

“The CTPH is a partnership that draws on strengths of both institutions, creating a rich multidisciplinary environment. It will act as the vehicle to enhance the infrastructure and resources needed to effectively conduct research and implement solutions to advance healthcare,” said Dr. Carolyn Smith, interim senior vice president and dean of research at BCM. “It will help implement and create ongoing core research activities that will support the clinical translational science at both institutions.”

The hub will provide funding for pilot projects, and support the groundwork needed for ongoing research. For example, a researcher developing a clinical study might need help with community outreach and engagement, additional study design planning, or access to clinical data. The CTPH will provide resources and services to accelerate the pace of research from discovery to population level impact.

The foundational platform for the CTPH has been laid out in part by the work of Amos’ group at ICTR, which is a group that supports clinical and translational research within BCM.

In addition to UH’s Population Health program and Division of Research, the CTPH will draw upon expertise from 10 UH colleges, including the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, Andy & Barbara Gessner College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Optometry, C. T. Bauer College of Business, Cullen College of Engineering, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and the Honors College.

“We are deeply committed to advancing innovation in clinical and translational science, and this award is a significant step forward in our mission to improve population health outcomes,” Beech said. “This is a testament to the unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit of everyone involved. It truly was a team effort.”

Currently, more than 60 leading medical institutions across the nation receive CTSA Program funding. The institutions offer expertise, resources and partnerships at the national and local levels to improve the health of individuals and communities. The CTSA Program also nurtures the field of translational science through education, training and career support at all levels.

Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age performs on stage

Rock band Queens of the Stone Age has canceled the remainder of its 2024 tour as lead vocalist and founding member Josh Homme prioritizes his health and medical recovery following an emergency surgery earlier this summer.

“QOTSA regret to announce the cancellation and/or postponement of all remaining 2024 shows,” the group announced on social media yesterday. “Josh has been given no choice but to prioritize his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year.”

In the caption, the band advised festival ticket holders to consult the specific event sites for updated information. Further details about rescheduled dates are forthcoming from the sites purchases were made. Shows in Boston at the MGM Music Hall; Cincinnati, Ohio; Chicago and Madison, Wis. were postponed to next year. The concerts in Bridgeport, Conn.; Memphis, Tenn. and Mexico City were canceled.

The news comes following several cancellations earlier this summer in July, as the frontman experienced medical issues. On July 5, the band — which Homme formed in the late 1990s, as the sole continuous member — announced a cancellation with refunds “due to illness” for the AMA Festival in Vicenza, Italy. Queens of the Stone Age returned to the stage the following day in Milan. On July 9, it was announced that the singer-songwriter had to urgently return to the U.S. for emergency surgery, with the band writing that “every effort was made to push through and play for you, but it is no longer an option to continue.” Remaining dates in July were canceled, with the band stating that it was “gutted” it wouldn’t be able to perform. The last update came on July 26, with the band writing that Homme was under doctors’ orders to remain in the U.S. to continue receiving medical care, leading Queens of the Stone Age to cancel the remaining leg of their European tour.

Homme was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, revealing last year that the surgery to remove it was “successful.”

Explaining Claims About Tim Walz’s Military Service

Four veterans who investigate claims of fraudulent military service said they do not believe the governor is guilty of “stolen valor,” but that he did misrepresent his record at times.

  • Share full article

Gov. Tim Walz speaking at a lectern at a rally wearing a dark suit and a red tie.

By Linda Qiu

Reporting from Washington

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has faced fresh scrutiny over his military service, and how he has characterized his record, in the weeks since he was selected as Vice President Kamala Harris’s running mate.

The attacks, spearheaded by his rival for the vice presidency who himself is a veteran, JD Vance, have dogged him since he first ran for Congress nearly two decades ago. Mr. Walz has forcefully defended his time in the Army National Guard.

“I am damn proud of my service to this country,” Mr. Walz said this month . “And I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record.”

Some details of Mr. Walz’s service are still unknown, and other facts may remain unverifiable. Here’s what we know.

What Was Said

“What bothers me about Tim Walz is the stolen valor garbage. Do not pretend to be something that you’re not.” — Mr. Vance at a rally in Michigan in August

“How dare @GovTimWalz claim he went to war when he did not. While I am not a combat veteran, I did not dodge service. He’s a coward. This is grossly misleading and, by definition, illegal. Walz never deployed and is falsely claiming he did. This is stolen valor.” — Representative Anna Paulina Luna, Republican of Florida, on social media in August

The Trump campaign and other critics have cited a few comments Mr. Walz has made as evidence that he has lied about having served in combat.

The Stolen Valor Act makes it a federal crime to falsely claim to have received a military valor award for financial gain or for other benefits. There is no evidence that Mr. Walz has violated that law.

But colloquially, the term lacks a uniform definition, with veterans and members of the military community differing over what constitutes “stolen valor” in general and whether Mr. Walz has crossed that line in particular.

The New York Times interviewed four veterans who specialize in investigating cases of deception about service and who have collectively documented thousands of cases of stolen valor throughout decades of research.

All four said that they do not believe Mr. Walz engaged in stolen valor, but that he did misrepresent his record at times or, at the very least, has not always been precise. In comparison, the investigators gave actual examples of stolen valor, such as politicians repeatedly and falsely claiming to have served in wars they had not or earning medals they had not .

Doug Sterner, a military historian widely considered to be a leading researcher of military service claims and who helped draft the Stolen Valor Act , called the criticisms of Mr. Walz “politically motivated” and unfair, though he agreed that Mr. Walz had misrepresented elements of his service.

Anthony Anderson, a retired Army sergeant who runs the website Guardian of Valor , which chronicles false claims of military service or awards, noted that Mr. Walz’s story “is something I wouldn’t even put on my website.” Given that Mr. Walz has misspoken and fails to correct the record at times, there is reason to believe that “he is definitely embellishing his record to gain points with the voters,” Mr. Anderson said.

But he added, “I wouldn’t consider that stolen valor.”

Here is a rundown of Mr. Walz’s references to his service.

A comment about being “in war”

The clearest example of embellishment was a remark Mr. Walz made in 2018 saying that he had “carried a weapon of war in war.”

Mr. Walz has not been in war, and the Harris campaign has said that he misspoke .

Throughout his political career, Mr. Walz has usually said he was “in support” of Operation Enduring Freedom when describing his service. That is the official name for the combat mission in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 and ended December 2014.

Mr. Walz’s unit — the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery of the Minnesota Army National Guard — was deployed in 2003 in support of the operation , though he was stationed in Italy, not Afghanistan or the Middle East. (This was not atypical: Of the 45,000 military personnel assigned to the combat mission that fall, less than a third, or about 10,000, were actually stationed in Afghanistan. )

During Mr. Walz’s first congressional race in 2006, a resident wrote to a local newspaper accusing Mr. Walz of misleading voters through “artful omission” and wrongly implying he had served in combat. Mr. Walz strongly objected, writing to the same newspaper that his campaign website clearly stated that he had served overseas “in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.”

After his election to the House of Representatives, Mr. Walz continued to specify that he served “in support” of that combat mission.

Some have noted that Mr. Walz has not corrected others when they have referred to him as an “Afghanistan veteran,” a term that may more directly imply being stationed there. For example, on a television program in 2016 , the host characterized Mr. Walz as a veteran who had served in “Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan,” to which Mr. Walz nodded.

A campaign sign

Allies of Mr. Trump have also pointed to a sign that Mr. Walz held in 2004, while campaigning for John Kerry, the Democratic candidate for president, that appeared to read, “Enduring Freedom Veterans for Kerry.” A news release issued by Mr. Walz’s 2006 congressional campaign also identified him as an “Operation Enduring Freedom veteran.”

So Mr. Walz’s sign was not inaccurate. But whether the term “Enduring Freedom veteran” implies being physically present in Afghanistan is open to interpretation.

For example, to be eligible for a license plate bearing those words, residents of Kansas must furnish proof that they received an Afghanistan campaign medal, indicating service in the country, while those in Virginia need only the words “Operation Enduring Freedom” printed on official paperwork.

A Green Beret hat

Additionally, critics have cited Mr. Walz repeatedly wearing a baseball cap of a regiment he did not belong to. The cap bearing the insignia of the 1st Special Forces Group was a gift to Mr. Walz during a 2008 congressional visit to Afghanistan , the Harris campaign said.

The Times found no evidence that Mr. Walz has claimed to be a member of the Special Forces. Neither has Kevin Knapp, a retired Special Forces major who operates Guardians of the Green Beret , a website that looks at claims about serving in the Special Forces.

Mr. Knapp said that while he questioned Mr. Walz’s decision to continue wearing the gift and that he personally would never wear insignia that he did not earn, he considered the cap a “nonissue” and not an example of stolen valor.

“A lot of people we get contacted about, there’s photographic evidence, tattoos or conversations of ‘I was a Green Beret and I was behind the lines and I did all of this,’ and they never did,” Mr. Knapp said, adding that a trail of misrepresentation did not exist in Mr. Walz’s case.

“Tim Walz claimed to be a command sergeant major, even had it printed on his challenge coins, and he knew he never achieved that rank.” — Mr. Vance in a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in August

Mr. Walz repeatedly referred to himself as a retired command sergeant major — the highest rank possible for enlisted soldiers — throughout his political career.

While he served at that rank in the last weeks of his National Guard service, Mr. Walz was reverted to one rank lower, master sergeant, as he did not complete coursework required. In other words, he served as command sergeant major, but retired as a master sergeant.

The Minnesota National Guard said that Mr. Walz was promoted to sergeant major on Sept. 17, 2004, and was appointed command sergeant major on April 1, 2005. He retired on May 16, 2005, but was “administratively reduced” to master sergeant a day earlier.

It is not clear when Mr. Walz was officially informed of this change, the spokeswoman said. But paperwork obtained by Mr. Anderson of Guardian of Valor suggested that his rank was corrected in September 2005, after he had retired.

Regardless, Mr. Walz continued to refer to himself as a “command sergeant major,” including in his 2018 campaign for governor and on the Harris campaign website. The campaign has since updated the website to note that he “served,” not “retired,” at that rank. Mr. Walz had also issued a congressional coin bearing the insignia of a command sergeant major.

Most stolen valor investigators reached by The Times said Mr. Walz’s repeated citations of a higher rank were perhaps the most pernicious of his past remarks.

“That was a choice, an intentional choice that was not a misspoken comment in the excitement of the moment,” Mr. Knapp said.

Jeff, a retired Navy corpsman who researches for the website Military Phonies and asked to be identified only by his first name for fear of retribution, said the “retired command sergeant major” references especially stands out because service members are typically aware of the requirements to attain a rank. Mr. Walz, he added, chose to not complete his coursework.

While Mr. Sterner agreed that Mr. Walz had been inaccurate in describing his rank, he suggested that aspects of service, including rank and recognition, can shift after service. He noted he knew of at least a dozen veterans who continued to wear the Silver Star or Distinguished Service Cross decades after their awards were upgraded to the Medal of Honor, adding, “Are you going to go after them?”

Mr. Sterner likened Mr. Walz to “a fisherman that caught a 21-pound fish that everybody said, ‘No, it was 20 pounds.’ Maybe it lost a pound between the time he caught it and when he got to the weigh station.”

“You abandoned your unit right before they went to Iraq.” — Mr. Vance at the Michigan rally

“Tim Walz TURNED HIS BACK on the soldiers in his unit because he was TOO afraid to deploy to Iraq!!” — Representative Ronny L. Jackson, Republican of Texas, in a social media post in August

This claim stems from criticisms over when Mr. Walz decided to retire from the National Guard .

Mr. Walz served for 24 years, past the 20 years of service required for retirement. ( Only 10 percent of enlisted service members retire ; the vast majority discharge from the military before 20 years.)

He enlisted in the Nebraska Army National Guard in April 1981 as an infantryman just days after his 17th birthday, and transferred to the Minnesota Army National Guard in August 1996 with the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery, according to the Minnesota Guard.

Mr. Walz filed paperwork declaring his intent to run for a seat in the House of Representatives in February 2005. In March 2005, his campaign released a statement noting that the National Guard had announced “a possible partial mobilization of 2,000 troops” from Minnesota and that it would require all or part of Mr. Walz’s battalion to deploy to Iraq within the next two years. Mr. Walz said he would stay in the race and serve if called upon.

Mr. Walz retired officially on May 16, 2005. It is unknown when he submitted his retirement paperwork, the Minnesota National Guard said, noting that the process varies but approval can take 30 to 120 days.

The unit received an alert order for mobilization to Iraq on July 14, 2005, the Minnesota National Guard said. But it did not receive an official Pentagon mobilization order until August 2005. It mobilized in October 2005 and deployed to Iraq in March 2006.

Members of his battalion previously told The Times that rumors of a possible deployment had begun circulating as Mr. Walz considered a run for Congress. Jack Cook, who served in the unit after Mr. Walz retired, said in a separate interview that senior members of the command staff knew of potential missions and deployments long before the actual unit notifications went out.

Ultimately, whether Mr. Walz submitted his retirement paperwork before the possible deployment announcement is unclear. But he retired after the announcement of a possible deployment, and before an unofficial alert was issued and an official order was received.
