Top 6 Fave Experiences aboard the American Song | Inaugural Columbia River Cruise 2019

New to the Columbia River this year is the beautiful American Song . Completed in 2018, the new ship represents the next evolutionary phase in American riverboats. Two of us were fortunate to cruise on the inaugural Columbia River journey aboard the American Song, and are happy to share our pictures and experience with you.

Ship Overview

The design of the boat is impressive. The American Song is truly beautiful. Each level of the boat has a different color carpet, which came in handy to remind me where I was, and whether I needed to go up or down. The indoor and outdoor lounges were lovely, with fun shades of blue and green. Lots of places to sit and enjoy the view! The staterooms were a good size – plenty of room to relax and enjoy your downtime. And I loved standing on our balcony and taking photos of the passing scenery. There was even one morning I looked out the window to see a wall – we were inside a lock! The Magnolia Lounge was a fun gathering place for historian lectures, evening entertainment, and cocktail hour. The Sky Lounge was a great place to grab a late night snack and sit quietly with a good book.

#3 | Locks and Dams

I’ve toured Bonneville Dam before, but I’d never ridden a boat thru the lock before. New experience! The Bonneville Dam was early in the morning, and some passengers woke up to a wall outside their window – including me! But The Dalles Dam was during cocktail hour, so everyone was at the front of the boat to watch the approach. The boat had to get all lined up properly with lock, and we all stood and waited for the ‘green light’ and the doors to open. I expected metal-on-metal screeching noises, akin to something from Star Wars. Surprisingly, it was silent! We also crossed the John Day Dam, McNary Dam and Ice Harbor Dam. There were three more dams on the schedule, but our cruise was re-routed due to spring water levels.

#4 | Evening Entertainment

The American Song offered entertainment every evening in the Cascade Lounge. Not every one was a star, but the boat tried to provide a variety of styles to suit most people. There were two standout performers on our cruise. The first was Kevin Neil. We actually were fortunate enough to enjoy Kevin’s company twice during our cruise. In Astoria, Kevin performed “Songs of the Sailor,” and provided historical tidbits and sailor humor that gave us all a giggle. In Stevenson, Kevin joined us again for “Cowboy Songs.” That night we laughed even harder! He’s a great singer and guitar player and knows a lot of music, but his stage presence is great and he knows a lot of funny stories and jokes. Our last night onboard, we had a saxophone quartet. Now I enjoy a good saxophone, but I didn’t know what to make of four saxophones alone. They were fantastic! They arranged their own music, and played a variety of upbeat tunes that had us dancing in our seats. The best part was the end, when they said they were playing a sing-along song but weren’t going to tell us what it was. They played, “Tequila”! So we all yelled the one song lyric at the appropriate times in the song. It was great fun!

#6 | Crew Pranks

Overall, our cruise was a lot of fun. We had a relaxed week aboard the American Song. And, of course, it goes without saying that we’re huge fans of the Columbia River! Why else would we live here? Come visit us and take a cruise thru our backyard.

HAVE YOU BEEN ON A SMALL SHIP CRUISE BEFORE?

I’ve been on 7 small ship cruises.

Had owners suite 304. No shuttle to boat. No one greeted us. No food open at hotel till 530. Grossly understaffed. 3 maids to do whole ship. Chef needs training. Dinning room magr. Has no clue. Wait time at meals, wrong items, cold food, over cooked food. Fish smelled not fresh over cooked too. No service on board or gifts in owners suite $23,000 ???? Worth it ???

COVID 19 hurt getting people I get that. They should have cancelled with so little crew. Several staff left boat after 3 days, carpets dirty, dining room chairs broken, soiled. 5:30 cocktails were a long wait in line 20-25 min. Had just 1 bar and two attendants. Appetizers were of poor quality and inadequate for the amount of passengers. Staff not trained on what they were serving or how to.

We felt sorry for the crew. This was clearly a greed cruise. Only the line enjoyed this cruise.

American song review, review of american song.

The 2018-built MS American Song cruise ship is the first newbuild in the American Cruise Lines ' "Modern Riverboat" fleet.

From this class/with the same design are the sisterships American Harmony (2019), American Jazz (2020), American Melody (2021), American Symphony (2022), American Serenade (2023).

American Song is identified by an IMO number 9871713 and is USA-flagged (MMSI 368046350).

History - construction and ownership

The shipowner American Cruise Lines (ACL) is the USA's largest river cruise company (headquarters in Guilford Connecticut) operational since 1991. The company specializes in cruise shipping on the USA's largest navigable inland waterways (rivers and lakes) as well as in cruises along the US East Coast, US West Coast and Florida. All ACL vessels feature some of the industry's largest passenger cabins with private balconies, spacious lounges and outdoor deck spaces, gourmet cuisine, top-quality enrichment program with many complimentary land tours and excursions, highly-personalized service by all-American staff and crew.

All ACL cruise ships are US-flagged and built by the company-owned Chesapeake Shipbuilding Yard in Salisbury (Maryland USA).

American Cruise Line ship class Modern Riverboat

Unlike anything seen before along American waterways, the innovative vessel brings a new dimension to river cruising in the United States. American Song integrates contemporary design with no sacrificing the comfort that American Cruise Lines is popular for. Quieter, wider, and faster than any other river ship, it is the most environmentally friendly in the industry.

Traditionally for large-sized US riverboats, American Song has a fore-located boarding ramp (bow-location on Deck 1) that allows passengers to go ashore at any place along the ship's cruise itinerary route. The ramp has an innovative design being constructed as a retractable gangway (passenger bridge). The technology is often implemented on some of the largest ferries and features an opening bow door.

While other small cruise lines repurpose old casino ships, American Cruise Lines decided to build brand new boats to maintain the company's reputation for premium quality and services. Each of the newbuilds features most innovative design, spacious indoor and outdoor areas. Each vessel is a traditional US built (at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury Maryland), as well as American-flagged and crewed.

Decks and Cabins

ACCL's American Song ship has 5 passenger decks (accessible via two elevators) and a total of 94 staterooms . The number of cabin categories is 7. All accommodations are Balcony cabins, with floor-ceiling sliding doors opening onto a private step-out veranda. The boat has no connecting rooms.

The smallest staterooms (including the studios / single-occupancy cabins) sizes start at 250 ft2 (23 m2). Other staterooms range between 305-330 ft2 (28-31 m2). Veranda Suites are 405 ft2 (38 m2). Owner's Suites are 445 ft2 (41 m2). The boat's largest staterooms are the two Grand Suites located aft on deck 3. Each measures 900 ft2 (84 m2) and features 2 walls of floor-ceiling windows, sliding doors (opening to a wrap-around balcony), separate bedroom/lounge area, marble bathroom (double-sink vanity),

Shipboard facilities and amenities

MS American Song features innovative interior design concepts - from the 4-story glass-walled Vestibule (Atrium) to spacious indoor and outdoor lounges, large open-deck spaces, floor-ceiling windows throughout the vessel. The 4-decks high Vestibule has floor-ceiling windows (portside and starboard) and SkyLight (transparent glass-roof cover) that allows natural light into the ship's interior.

Two Sun Decks (Lower on Deck 5-aft, and Upper on Deck 6) are fitted with sunbathing and shaded seating areas, putting green, deck-game area (shuffleboard). The ship has 5 lounges (2 with large outdoor terraces), Grand Dining Room (complimentary, glass-enclosed restaurant), Chart Room (Library Lounge), fore-located Main Lounge (deck 4), aft-located Sky Lounge (deck 4), indoor Gym/Exercise Room. The Upper Sun Deck (top-deck) is furnished with comfortable deckchairs and has 3x shaded seating areas (Canopies) and 2x SkyLights (glass-roof cover).

The aft-located (on Deck 4) Sky Lounge features premium furniture, floor-ceiling windows, glass-roof cover (SkyLight), direct access to an open-air Terrace (for relaxation and alfresco dining/Back Porch Cafe). Throughout the day, there are served beverages, snacks, freshly-baked cookies, and pastries. Sky Lounge's glass doors open to the Back Porch Cafe (alfresco dining venue) - a spacious Terrace furnished with wicker furniture (armchairs and 4-seat tables). The lounge bar serves water, soda, and light snacks throughout the day. A Complimentary Afternoon Tea service is offered between 3:30-4:30 pm. In the evening, there is a complimentary cocktail hour.

The fore-located (on Deck 4) Cascade Lounge is the boat's main lounge with floor-ceiling windows and glass-roof cover. It also serves as the ship's show lounge with a central stage, grand piano and ample comfortable seating area full of comfy armchairs and plush sofas. Here are served warm cookies starting at 10 am. The complimentary Afternoon Tea service (with fresh pastries) is at 3:30 pm. The free-drinks cocktail hour is at 5:30 pm. Root beer and ice cream are passed around during the evening show. The evening entertainment includes one show (beginning at 8:15 pm) lasting about 1 hour. The show program could be a live concert, solo performances, music tribute, themed music, movie trivia. The large space for the evening shows is in the room's center. Furniture is daily rearranged (sometimes 2 or 3 times a day) to suit the themed entertainment. This is also the place for the American Cruise Lines' enrichment program, consisting of differently-themed lectures (history, food and wine, literature, etc). Also hosted here are media presentations and the current ACL cruise itinerary and tours-related multimedia presentations and port talks.

The list of the American Song ship's main public venues includes:

The improved ship design allows "bow landings" via a retractable and rotating gangway (passenger bridge) that extends from Main Deck (deck 1) to the dock or directly onto the river bank. This feature is available on all traditional-design US paddlewheel riverboats and provides expanded options for river cruise itineraries unmatched by most newbuild river cruise ships .

The ship has a modern propulsion system consisting of 2x azimuth thrusters ("Z-drives") manufactured by Veth (Holland). These 360-degree rotating propellers (1x forward, 1x aft) provide the boat with greater manoeuvrability and berthing flexibility.

The ship is powered by 2x Caterpillar marine engines running on low-sulfur diesel. These modern engines require less fuel and produce fewer emissions (COx, NOx, SOx) and soot particles in comparison to other boats on the US river cruising market.

The vessel was launched on November 17, 2017, which was 7 weeks ahead of schedule. The ceremony was held at the Chesapeake Shipbuilding yard in Salisbury MA. During the launch, the hull was floated-out from drydock into Wicomico River. Then it was positioned in the shipyard's East Outfitting Basin to receive the superstructure (upper decks) and outfitting.

On February 27, 2018, the shipowner American Cruise Lines announced the start of construction works on the second riverboat in this series ( American Harmony ) of all 5 same-design ships. For the 5 vessels series was again contracted the US shipbuilder Chesapeake Shipbuilding (Salisbury MD).

MS American Song's "Inaugural cruise" (maiden voyage) was initially scheduled for September 29, but later re-scheduled for October 6, 2018. The 8-day / 7-night "Mississippi River" itinerary was a roundtrip from New Orleans , with prices starting from USD 4800 (category AAR balcony cabin) and up to USD 7100 (Owner Suite).

Hello I just returned from a fabulous 8 night River cruise with ACL on the American Song July 8th through July 16th. I posted my review on the Disabled board but I thought that it would help other people on this board to see what ACL has to offer.

A little about us. We are in our early sixties and I have MS. I walk with a cane and travel with a transport wheelchair. I usually rent a scooter for larger ships but didn’t for this trip and I will explain later.

We didn’t know what to expect when we booked with ACL because I honestly was not familiar with them. A big shout out to Essies Mom for suggesting this line when I posted a question about a year ago. I had so many questions about this cruise line and its itinerary and everyone here was so helpful That I just wanted to return the favor!

IMG_4751.thumb.jpeg.cd120412eebeb6f97cface9d5f1334ca.jpeg

Initially in the early stages of planning this cruise I was a little taken back by the price. It’s definitely the priciest cruise we’ve been on including our Alaskan cruise but it is all inclusive with drinks and gratuities included and also some nice complimentary shore excursions. Although the staff was willing to always help out I do think ACL needs to improve the overall accessibility in their staterooms and the disembarkation process on both shore excursions and the first and last day. I had done some research on line before the cruise and saw that the hallways and elevators were small and narrow and a scooter would have a hard time getting through especially when there are carts in the hallway from housekeeping staff who by the way were awesome and always seemed to be working and available if need be. The ramps to leave the ship for excursions were quite narrow steep and bumpy and I don’t think you would be able to use a scooter on them. That is the one thing that Princess and Celebrity have ACL beat hands down because I’ve been on both of them and never had a problem using my scooter. The ramps going ashore would definitely not accommodate a travel scooter and the shower in my accessible stateroom had a six inch lip that if I was traveling alone I would have not been able to use. I took pictures of the bathroom to show others so they are prepared. The balcony also required a step. All and all it was a wonderful cruise and I would definitely recommend them but I think at this point it would be a bit hard on a wheelchair traveler to do on their own. Just a note and just my opinion I’m glad I started our journey in Clarkston WA which is hot and dry and almost dessert like. On the day we disembarked it was a scorching 95 degrees! Luckily it got cooler and much more pleasant as we traveled down the river towards Oregon. Although both landscapes are beautiful in their own right I think it would be a bit of a let down to go from the lush green scenery in Oregon to the desert like landscape of eastern Washington. But again that’s just my opinion. There is also an option for a pre cruise Jet Boat excursion that we didn’t take because it wasn’t wheelchair accessible but fellow passengers said it was wonderful but you would have to start your cruise two days before in Clarkston to accommodate it.

The Columbia River is made up of a series of locks and we passed through eight of them on our journey. Some of them at night. They were designed to let ships pass seamlessly from one water level to another dropping at levels of 90 feet and a defiantly an engineering marvel!

I loved all the excursions and it would be hard to pick my favorite but I will say definitely Mount Saint Helen, Cape Disappointment and the M Falls are a must see! We did take a break from the museums and exhibits one day and visited the Merry Hills Winery where the wine was great and the scenery was spectacular!     We also loved watching the masses of wind surfers in Mount Hood where can have wind velocities of up to 70 miles per hour! No wonder it is known as the “ Wind surfing capital of the world “

I forgot to mention that forgot to mention that we had four motor coaches that followed our cruise all week and two of them had lifts to accommodate wheelchair travelers and room on them to fit two wheelchair passengers that needed to stay in their wheelchair. I had trouble navigating the stairs on the motor coach the first day and needed to bring my wheelchair to excursions that required a lot of walking so this really helped me! I was blessed to have a wonderful driver named Abra who was always there to assist me with the stairs or operate the lift on days when I needed it. I told her that she was my angel and I couldn’t have done what I did without her help.  Although I thoroughly enjoyed all the excursions offered by ACL I think one of my favorite days was the last day of our cruise that we spent just cruising and enjoying the beautiful scenery of Oregon. It was so nice not to have to report to anyone or rise at dawn to board a motor coach for an excursion. These last two random photos are of my wonderful bus driver Abra and the other is of the last day of our cruise that we spent on our balcony enjoying the beautiful weather and scenery of Oregon. I also loved our first day of the cruise when we spent the day cruising and enjoying the beautiful views of Washington.

Well I hope I gave you a good idea of what the ACL Colombia River cruise was like! Thanks for reading!

A very belated thank you for your informative and well-written review, and of course the great pictures.

I have one question: were there any tables for two in the dining room at dinner time? My wife and I like to socialize with fellow-cruise guests over drinks, but prefer to dine by ourselves.

Hi Jim! Thank you for your feedback! No there are no tables of two. They are either 4or 6. We were the same way about liking to socializing with fellow passengers but choosing to dine just the two of us.  We were a little nervous that there were no tables of two. We quickly realized that the reason for this setup was to encourage people to meet. I honestly think that it made our trip to dine this way ! I have never met and got to know so many wonderful and interesting people on any other cruise I’ve ever been on. It is a truly unique experience and I look forward to our next one. Please make sure you make it to the coattail hour before dinner because it’s phenomenal!

Please excuse the misspelling on my response! I was posting via voice activation and it doesn’t always translate the best spelling or grammar! I tried to edit it but posted it by mistake!

You're forgiven! I'm a lot like you in that I hate spelling and grammatical errors, especially when I'm the one who makes them (which is all too often, unfortunately). And I never use voice activation, so I don't even have that excuse!

Thank you for your thoughtful review...very helpful.

Question regarding the dining tables for four or six. Were you assigned a table that stayed the same the entire cruise? Did you have any choice between four or six?

It's open seating. Sit where you want.

Nice review. Thank you. Wondering if passengers have time to do more than one excursion in a day when not cruising. The ACL website doesn't give times in port or times of excursions. Did passengers do independent, non-ship excursions? Thank you.

One more dining room question.  Does everyone eat at the same time?  Or if say dinner starts at 6:00 pm, can people come in for dinner at 7:30 pm?

Dining hours are 530 to 730. You can go in anytime you want. The happy hour runs from 5:30 to 6:30 and you’ll find that most people go directly to dinner after the happy hour at 6:30.

Taking this cruise in June and enjoyed your review very much. Just have a question I have not seen addressed on any reviews. It pertains to tipping.  I have taken many large  ship cruises and besides normal billed daily gratuities it is almost expected to tip the staff additional cash gratuities for, eg. bartender, room steward, room service delivery.  I want to do the right thing and have no objections to providing tips in addition to "gratuities included".  What is appropriate with ACL?

ACL official policy is NO tipping required as it is included in the cruise fare. However, most people will give tips to dining servers or housekeepers that take care of them. Also, Bus Drivers and Tour Guides should be tipped. (On many itineraries, the busses follow the ship so you will see the same bus and driver every day.)

Thank You for your   response, that is exactly what I wanted to know.

Thanks for the fabulous review!   We were worried about the accessibility of the ship, because some of the large ship cruise lines don't offer many easy activity excursions.

ComputerDad

Hi.  Great review.  Can you tell me if there were any activities (like a welcome dinner) on the first night in the cruise hotel.  Also what happens the morning when you leave the hotel and board the ship.  I heard that there is a tour that morning but I can not find any details.

could you elaborate on the nightly entertainment and tv movies??

New cruise ship rollin’ on the Columbia River

Usa river cruises adds third vessel, the american song, to its columbia river contingent.

The American Song will be the seventh cruise vessel operating on the Columbia River and includes 92 passenger rooms with a 183-passenger capacity.

Vancouver-based USA River Cruises has campaigned for years to promote the Columbia River as a cruise line venue, and on Friday the cruise agency invited local business owners and tourism leaders to view the latest ship to join the local lineup: the American Song, owned and operated by Connecticut-based American Cruise Lines.

The boat docked at the Red Lion at Jantzen Beach for a tour and lunch event, and the crew led dozens of guests on tours of the interior of the four-story vessel.

The American Song was built in Baltimore and debuted last fall on the Mississippi River, according to Andy Magistrale, the Northwest regional sales director for American Cruise Lines.

In January, it sailed on a four-week trip down through the Panama Canal and back up to Astoria, Ore., to reach the Columbia River. The ship hasn’t yet ventured upriver beyond Portland, according to Capt. Andrew Howes, because it needed to pass a U.S. Coast Guard inspection.

With the inspection out of the way, the ship will soon leave Jantzen Beach on the first of many weeklong cruises up the Columbia and Snake rivers to Clarkston.

“We’ve been training, we’ve been cleaning, we’ve been making sure it’s just perfect,” said Nico Suarez, one of the hotel managers at American Cruise Lines.

The American Song is the third American Cruise Lines ship to operate on the Columbia River, joining the American Pride and the Queen of the West. Additional Columbia River cruise vessels, such as the American Empress, are operated by other companies, bringing the total number of Columbia River cruises to seven as of this year.

The vessels range from six to 221 passengers, according to USA River Cruises. The American Song comes in near the top of that range, with a maximum capacity of 183 passengers, plus 60 to 68 crew members, according to Howes.

“Our first boats only carried 49 passengers, so we’ve come a long way,” he said.

The 328-foot-long, 55-foot-wide American Song includes 92 passenger cabins, with accessible cabins and a set of elevators near the stairs. Unlike the other two ships in American Cruise Lines’ Columbia River lineup, the American Song isn’t a sternwheeler — but its interior shares the old-school riverboat aesthetic of its paddle-wheel siblings.

The trip all the way to Clarkston is made possible by the ship’s draft depth of only 8 1/2 feet, according to Howes. It’s also equipped with a motorized prow section that lifts out of the way to make room for an extending forward ramp, allowing the boat to stop at beaches and other non-dock destinations.

Tour and trip

Magistrale began the tour by leading guests up the four-story central staircase to reach the Song’s second floor, which includes a business center conference room in between two hallways of guest suites and an indoor rear lounge with views aft of the ship.

The tour then went up to the third floor to visit the “back porch caf?,” an outdoor lounge with a dedicated kitchen and serving window where passengers can order hot dogs and hamburgers. Most of the ship’s other lounges also include bar counters and offer unlimited snacks, Magistrale said.

The fourth floor features an exercise room and the main forward lounge with a drop-down screen for movies. Magistrale also took the guests up to the fifth floor: the outdoor deck that runs most of the length of the top of the boat.

“This is just a viewing level only,” he said — although he noted that it does include a putt-putt golf area.

The one-destination Portland-to-Clarkston cruises will depart from Jantzen Beach and sail down to Astoria, then reverse course and travel all the way up the river to Clarkston, with multiple stops at ports and attractions along the Columbia and Snake rivers, and in some cases local entertainers will come aboard for an evening or a portion of the cruise. Each cruise will also feature a guest speaker.

Howes has captained cruise ships on multiple rivers, but he said the Columbia River is his favorite cruise venue due to its scenic views and wide variety of environments.

“The change from the rainforest down there to the high desert up there is just incredible,” he said.

The tour ended with a presentation in the forward lounge followed by lunch in the dining hall back on the first floor. The hall has a 190-seat capacity, according to hotel manager Christina Hargis, and can seat the entire passenger complement at once for local-inspired cuisine.

Destination Vancouver

American Cruise Lines has been offering Columbia River cruises since 2011, when USA River Cruises urged American Cruise Lines owner Charles Robinson to buy the Queen of the West and restore its Columbia River operations after its previous owner went bankrupt.

“Before that, he never had anything west of the Mississippi,” said USA River Cruises co-owner Cindy Anderson.

USA River Cruises was founded in 1996 and moved to Vancouver in 1999. The travel agency specializes in the type of small cruise ships that are typically used for river cruises, usually with a passenger capacity of fewer than 700 people.

The company books passengers for more than a dozen Columbia River cruises ranging from four to 10 nights, with different destinations and themes along the Columbia and Snake rivers. Starting ticket prices range from $1,200 to $7,200, and are typically billed as all-inclusive, with onboard meals, beverages and activities all included in the price.

In addition to promoting the Columbia River overall, USA River Cruises has also been placing an increasing emphasis on promoting Vancouver’s Terminal 1 dock as a port of call for cruise lines.

“A lot of these (cruises) go to Portland, but they don’t know about us,” Anderson said.

The only ship that currently stops at the dock is the American Empress, which was purchased by the Tennessee-based American Queen Steamboat Co. and returned to the Columbia River in 2014 following several years of disuse.

But Anderson hopes to convince additional ship operators to follow the Empress’ lead by promoting downtown Vancouver and The Waterfront Vancouver as fun and walkable destinations for passengers’ onshore excursions, and highlighting local events like the Vancouver Farmers Market.

It would be simple for any of the existing cruise lines to add a Vancouver stop, she said, and the odds improve with each new ship that joins the Columbia River’s expanding river cruise industry.

“The Columbia River outsold the Mississippi River last year, for first time ever,” she said. “Last year we had six ships on the river and they were all sold out, from May to October.”

7 best US river cruises

Donna Heiderstadt

Whether you're fascinated by American history, culture and cuisine, or you've enjoyed river cruising in Europe but are now looking to explore closer to home, U.S. river cruises are an easy and enjoyable vacation option.

Choose from two main waterways for your U.S. river cruise: the Mississippi River — which flows through nine states from St. Paul, Minnesota, to New Orleans — or the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. Some cruise lines also venture onto three smaller, lesser-known rivers: the Ohio, the Cumberland and the Tennessee. You can also explore New York's Hudson River on a fall foliage cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Your choice of cruise line is equally limited. Just two companies offer multiple itineraries on U.S. rivers. American Cruise Line sails all the waterways mentioned above, while Viking offers itineraries solely on the Mississippi. Additionally, Lindblad Expeditions has introduced a food-and-wine-centric river cruise on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Read on for our picks of the seven best U.S. river cruises. They range from seven to 15 nights and visit destinations in 16 states; itineraries take you through the colonial-heritage-rich Northeast, America's agricultural heartland and the pioneer routes of the Pacific Northwest.

American Cruise Lines' 8-night Music Cities Cruise

american song cruise ship columbia river

From Memphis blues and Elvis Presley's "Blue Suede Shoes" to Kentucky bluegrass and New Orleans jazz, American Cruise Lines' eight-night Music Cities Cruise sails you through a chronology of the U.S. music scene. You'll traverse three rivers (the Mississippi, Ohio and Cumberland) en route from Memphis to Nashville, or vice versa.

In Tennessee's two famous music cities, you'll have a chance to visit Elvis Presley's Graceland, stroll blues club-lined Beale Street and check out the Grand Ole Opry. You'll also visit Paducah, Kentucky, and Dover and Clarksville in Tennessee, where experiences include whiskey and bourbon tasting, tours of landmark art murals and, of course, Civil War history.

While cruising, you'll enjoy nightly entertainment that celebrates the region's musical heritage. American Cruise Lines offers this itinerary on four ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships — American Melody, American Symphony and American Serenade — are 180-passenger modern river ships launched in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth, American Splendor, is a 180-passenger paddlewheeler that debuted in 2016.

Viking's 14-night America's Great River Cruise

american song cruise ship columbia river

Want the total Mississippi experience? You can cruise the entire length of this mighty river as you visit 14 cities in seven U.S. states on Viking's two-week sailing.

Available three times a year (in July, September and October), the America's Great River cruise begins in Minnesota (either St. Paul or Red Wing) and concludes in New Orleans, allowing you to experience an intricate tapestry of American history and culture.

There's eagle spotting in Red Wing and agricultural innovation in Quad Cities, Iowa. You'll enjoy Mark Twain lore in Hannibal, Missouri, and architectural landmarks, such as the soaring Gateway Arch, in St. Louis. As you cruise the lower Mississippi, you'll delve into civil rights history in Memphis; Civil War battles and historic architecture in Mississippi's Vicksburg and Natchez; Cajun and Creole music in Baton Rouge; and the legendary culinary treats and jazz of New Orleans.

All sailings are aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Launched in 2022, it's currently the largest river ship in the U.S. and features three restaurants and an aft infinity pool.

American Cruise Lines' 8-Night Columbia & Snake River Cruise

american song cruise ship columbia river

If your vacation preferences favor mountain landscapes, wine tasting and pioneer lore, consider American Cruise Lines' eight-night Columbia & Snake River Cruise . You'll explore the Pacific Northwest from Portland, Oregon, to Clarkstown, Washington (or vice versa).

On the Pacific end of your voyage, you'll visit Astoria, Oregon — the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. This coastal city at the mouth of the Columbia River is known for its Victorian homes, wineries, brew pubs, and Lewis and Clark heritage. Next, from Kalama, Washington, you can join an excursion to visit the remnants of the area around Mount St. Helens, which suffered a devastating eruption in 1980.

In The Dalles, you can enjoy a sommelier-led tasting of Columbia Valley wines, visit Multnomah Falls or get adventurous on a river kayak tour. During a call on Richland, Washington, you can admire the scenic beauty around the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers at Sacajawea State Park. More wine tasting or outdoor adventure awaits on the way to Clarkstown.

American Cruise Line offers this itinerary on five ships from April to October 2024, 2025 and 2026. Three of the ships (American Song, American Jazz and American Harmony) are 180-passenger modern river ships launched from 2018 to 2020. American Pride is a 150-passenger paddlewheeler launched in 2012, and American West is a 110-passenger veteran paddlewheeler launched in 1995.

Viking's 7-night New Orleans & Southern Charms

american song cruise ship columbia river

If you've never visited New Orleans, or it's been a while, take a Mississippi River cruise that sails round-trip from the Big Easy. They offer time before or after the cruise to enjoy the city's food, music and iconic architecture — plus the ease of a round-trip flight booking. Viking's seven-night New Orleans & Southern Charms itinerary focuses solely on ports in Louisiana and Mississippi, with an emphasis on historic architecture, Cajun culture and Civil War landmarks.

From Darrow, Louisiana, you'll stroll beneath canopies of towering live oak trees to visit historic mansions or glide through the bayou. More historic architecture, along with bird-watching, awaits in St. Francisville, Louisiana, and Natchez, Mississippi. Vicksburg, Mississippi, is home to one of the Civil War's most famous battlefields. Baton Rouge, Louisiana's capital, has something to satisfy every interest, from Cajun cuisine to tours of the restored World War II-era USS Kidd.

The cruise, which is available in November and December 2024 and January, November and December 2025, ends with a full day of exploration back in New Orleans before one last night aboard the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi.

American Cruise Lines' 7-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise

american song cruise ship columbia river

Not only is the autumnal landscape in New York's Hudson Valley visually captivating, but the small cities and towns that line the river's shores are filled with fascinating early American history dating back more than 400 years.

Cruise the Hudson round-trip from New York City on American Cruise Lines' seven-night Hudson River Fall Foliage Cruise . You'll visit Catskill, home to the Hudson River School Art Trail and the Olana Historic Site, or explore more actively at the Hudson River Skywalk and Kaaterskill Falls. In Albany, founded in 1609, you can tour the newly renovated New York State Capitol building, built in the late 1800s; you can also visit the New York State Museum, which dates to 1836. Feel like apple-picking? That's an option here, too.

Next, during a call at Kingston/Hyde Park, you can tour the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, home to the 32nd U.S. president's library and museum. You can also head to the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site, featuring an American Beaux-Arts mansion completed in 1899. The United States Military Academy at West Point, founded in 1802, is also on the itinerary, as is Sleepy Hollow. The Sleepy Hollow legend comes to life during a tour of the local cemetery where author Washington Irving is buried. Back in the Big Apple on day seven, you'll have time to explore before saying farewell to your ship.

Sailings are available from late September to early November 2024, 2025 and 2026. Sailings are onboard either the 100-passenger American Eagle, American Liberty, American Glory or American Legend (all built in 2023 or 2024), or the older 90-passenger American Star and American Independence, launched in 2007 and 2010, respectively.

You'll enjoy regionally inspired dining and eclectic landmarks along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers as you sail.

Over two weeks, you'll visit Native American burial grounds and archeological sites in West Virginia and learn about the underground railroad in Ohio. You can taste bourbon and explore the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory or the Kentucky Derby Museum & Horse Park in Louisville. Take time to appreciate American artistry at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. Rest up from your portside adventures during five days of scenic river cruising.
