You can expect a warm welcome at By the Wye, a naturally luxurious, wildlife-steeped glamping site nestled on the border of England and Wales. Plan a fresh air-filled escape from everyday life… and as if that wasn’t enough, you’ll be surrounded by comfort and luxury of just about every description.

First, there’s the dream-like location; the family-run site is nestled amongst four acres of ancient, unspoilt woodland on the Wye riverbanks. Partly designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest, your friendly neighbours will include owls, dormice, badgers, bats, newts… and even the occasional otter!

Then there’s the off-grid, eco-friendly accommodation, especially designed to have minimal impact on the surrounding area. A range of thoughtfully positioned safari tents, sleeping between two to six guests, are gently elevated on stilts… so you get to sleep in the tree canopy, under a blanket of softly twinkling stars, and each comes with its own uniqueness.

Cwtch, for example, has a panoramic cedar barrel wood-fired sauna installed on the lower decking along with a fabulous outdoor shower. The sauna floats out above the woodland floor, offering breath-taking views of the river Wye below through the floor-to-ceiling glass end. Imagine lying in your private sauna, basking in the warmth, listening to the gentle crackle of the fire and watching kingfishers, herons and the occasional otter go by. For wellness lovers, this will truly be a unique sauna experience.

Meanwhile, Holly has an additional deck at the rear that has been transformed into a haven of tranquillity. On this private clearing in the woods there is a rainfall shower right beneath the trees, a hammock to while away the hours reading, and a dreamy outdoor bath where you can spend your evening soaking in the woods. For pure indulgence, private massages and reflexology treatments can be arranged, surrounded by just birdsong and the rustle of the trees.

River, the newest and largest of the collection, sleeps up to six guests.  Dreamily elevated right above the river Wye (hence the name!) you will wake up to incredible morning views, especially when enjoyed from the furnished decking.  Wheelchair-friendly and especially adapted for guests with limited mobility, there’s an indulgent wet-room style bathroom and a relaxed open-plan living space to unwind in all together.

The inviting safari tents at By The Wye sleep up to six people, but if you are looking for larger accommodation, there is a tree-top walkway connecting two of our safari tents; The Ivy and Meadow, so if you are a family group of (up to) ten people, this could be an ideal option for your next group glamping holiday.

If you’re in the mood for some extra pampering, there’s even a range of mouth-watering, locally sourced meal boxes available for your stay, from tasty breakfasts to barbecue banquets!

You can also accommodate any extra guests, or enjoy a more back-to-basics experience in nature, by booking a scout-style tent on the decking of the main safari tent. Simply bring sleeping bags, and a keen sense of adventure.

Speaking of adventure, you can get blissfully lost in exploring the beautiful Wye Valley, the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Black Mountains, or the mesmerising 8th century earthworks of Offa’s Dyke – the choice is utterly yours.  Closer to home, there is fishing available onsite, so it is the ideal venue for a relaxing fishing break.

“We spent a fabulous weekend here during the Summer and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a break to get away from it all but still enjoy the comforts of home! The welcome basket on arrival was a lovely touch and Edith was on hand to deal with any queries we had. We ordered a meat pack which was so generous it lasted us two nights! We really enjoyed cooking this on the firepit/bbq and finishing off toasting some of the marshmallows from the welcome basket. Hay-on-Wye is only a short walk away and after venturing in on a hot afternoon we were very glad to be able to jump into the river for some wild swimming to cool off once we were back to our tent.”

“I’m not usually one for going anywhere I can’t plug in a hairdryer but we stayed in one the safari tents earlier this year and were so well catered for I didn’t even notice! Very comfortable beds, a power bank and local welcome hamper (including the best crisps I’ve ever had…I actually ordered a box to arrive when I got home) all await. I’d also recommend a BBQ box, it was ready and waiting for us in our cool box and was super tasty. What’s also brilliant is that, although you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, you’re actually only a few minutes’ walk from the town centre. Perfect location and a really lovely stay.”

Come for a Hay-Cation! The town of Hay on Wye is a stone’s throw from the campsite. Situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Hay on Wye is famous as the town of books, and for the annual Hay Festival.

Today Hay-on-Wye – or Y Gelli Gandryll as it is known in the Welsh language – is friendly, lively and vibrant and, unsurprisingly for a town with such individuality and literary associations, is twinned with Timbuktu, which itself has the oldest Islamic library in the world.

River Safari Tent has adaptations throughout to make it accessible for people with limited mobility. Site Access : There are stepped and sloping areas from the main entrance throughout the woodland site. There is uneven ground throughout the wooded areas of the site and all car parking areas. Accommodation Access: All the tents are on one level. If you need any further information about accessibility please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

• Go horse riding in the Brecon Beacons (numerous local stables) or try fishing and water sports at the nearby Llangorse lake .
• Try canoeing or paddle boarding on the Wye (hire centre just 5 minutes walk away), or even enjoy some gorge walking.

By the Wye, situated in beautiful Hay on Wye, offers luxurious safari tents tucked away in beautiful woodland that leads right down to the banks of the River Wye. This is the perfect place to relax and unwind whether it be sat on your private deck overlooking the river and Brecon Beacons, exploring the woodland, casting a line on the Wye, sitting by the roaring fire, or strolling into nearby Hay on Wye.

Each tent, sleeping up to 5 guests, comes with log burning stove, beautiful beds, sumptuous sofas, running water, flushing toilets, power shower, en-suite bathroom, eco-friendly toiletries, and fully equipped kitchens. Outside there is a covered deck area with seating to make the most of the incredible riverside views. There is a separate picnic table and fire pit or BBQ for alfresco dining and cooking. Try one of the By the Wye meal boxes for breakfast and BBQs to family favourites. Sourced locally in Hay on Wye and the surrounding Brecon Beacons and delivered each day to your tent.

If you need to accommodate more guests why not book one of the scout-style tents which sleep 2 adults. These are pitched on the deck outside your Safari Tent. There is also a tree-top walkway connecting two of our safari tents; The Ivy and Meadow, so perfect for family group of up to 10 people.

Directly in front of the accommodation is exclusive and free fishing on the River Wye, purely for guests. This private stretch is about a mile long and offer great fishing for all species from barbel and chub to pike and trout. The opposite bank is Hay Town Water, covering over a mile of fishing, including the well known Warren Fishery . This is £15/day, £45 /week or £75/season.

If you want to explore the river more, both on the main river or the wonderful upland tributaries such as the famous River Irfon (near Builth Wells) there is lots of choice. This area of the river offers both outstanding coarse and game fishing from salmon and grayling to the hard fighting barbel. Day tickets can be arranged through the Wye and Usk Foundation (see  middle  and  upper wye  pages), or try the nearby Llanthomas Fishery

In the main farm area is The Cart-house , located next door to the owners’ farmhouse, and The Shepherds Shack . Kids can easily roam free from either of these lovely cottages. Just beyond the farmyard is Drovers Cottage , the furthest from the heart of things but also our favourite. Two cottages have one double and one twin bedroom; the third, The Shepherds Shack, has two doubles. They feature underfloor heating, contemporary furniture and well-equipped kitchens, as well as gardens with tables and chairs. We visited in December and our stay in The Cart-house was a festive joy. A wreath, mistletoe and a twinkling tree, plus the underfloor heating, made us feel cosy and festive despite the chilly weather. In the glamping meadow, you’ll find the Safari Tents . They are comfy and cosy, each with a double and twin bedroom (and electric blankets) and a wood-burning stove to cook on and warm the tent. Each tent has a deck with outdoor furniture. Bathrooms are all private in a separate block, located a short walk away. In summer (1 July-31 Aug) there is a pop-up bell tent village in a wildflower meadow with shepherd’s hut toilets and showers, and a communal kitchen. Each tent has a double and twin beds and comes with a fire bowl/barbecue. Kesri and Paul don't rest on their laurels, so plans are afoot to develop wood cabins too – watch this space!

Both tents and cottages are well set-up for self-catering , and you can cook and barbecue as much as you wish. Essentials like tea, coffee, sugar and cleaning supplies are provided. During peak seasons there are sociable feast nights up to five times a week – think Mexican, pizza nights and Sunday roasts. The courtyard between two barns has been transformed into a contemporary al fresco bar made from a shipping container, and there’s a barbecue space for cooking and dining in. It’s the perfect spot for kicking back with a cocktail, meeting with fellow guests, and relaxing. For those staying in the pop-up bell tents in the summer, there's a communal kitchen with plates, cups, bowls, glasses, cafetieres, cutlery, kettles and toasters and a stove. In colder months, one of the barns is open for indoor dining , with big communal tables that encourage a convivial atmosphere. Dogs are welcome here, and kids can eat and run off to play, with parents secure in the knowledge that the youngsters are safe and having fun. Meals are set according to what's in season; there's usually a meat option and a veggie option, plus sides (at least three are vegetarian). There is no kids' menu as such, but we found Kesri and Paul were very accommodating to our kids' dietary requirements.

The farm is simply perfect for families, particularly for those with active, outdoorsy older kids. There’s plenty of space for games (football, basketball, table tennis) and exploring, and animal-mad kids will love mucking in with feeding time every morning. There are two dogs to play with, and the convivial nature of the farm means that youngsters might make friends with other kids staying on-site.

Family friendly accommodation:

All accommodation is family-friendly, each with two bedrooms and a sofa bed for a 3rd child if required. Drovers Cottage is the largest and has the most space but is further away from the main area; The Cart-house has the largest garden, which leads onto the glamping field; The Shepherds Shack has the smallest outside space of all the cottages. Opt for a Safari Tent if you want to unplug and have a more immersive farm experience.

It is a working farm so kids do need to be aware of farm vehicles and uneven ground. The owners have two well-behaved dogs and a pet pig who roams around. There's an unfenced shallow pond on the property.

The locale is beautiful and easy to get to from Bristol and Cardiff. By Air Cardiff International Airport (117km) is the closest. You could also fly into Bristol Airport (129km). By The Wye glamping is a collection of 5 off-grid safari tents that roost in the treetops, above the forest floor, and look towards the nearest town of Hay on Wye. Just metres from each tent, one of the UK’s most beautiful natural rivers, The Wye, flows by. Of course, that’s just one irresistible part of this Wye Valley glamping package.

The whole By The Wye glamping site is a nature lover’s dream come true: there are four acres of rural bliss to enjoy made up of mixed ancient native woodland, a large section of which is a designated site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). So don’t be surprised if you spot owls, bats, badgers and even otter during your stay here.

This peaceful, rural spot is ideal for couples, groups of friends or families who want to close the door on the urban world and bliss out with Mother Nature. But camping this definitely not. There is no pitching to be done here. No sleeping bags to unfurl. Your home for the weekend is ready for you when you arrive; each tent is cantilevered up on the banks of the river, elevated on stilts so you can sit on your own private deck, eye-to-eye with the birds and the watery view.

Each of the 5 safari tents at By The Wye Glamping has been carefully positioned to give you maximum privacy during your weekend stay; so, if you want to rock out in your underwear feel free. The rustic feel of adventure is sewn into the canvas of every single tent and each one has slightly different features and personality.

Best of all, each tent comes with boutique hotel comforts that make a stay here so wonderful, including beautiful beds, plump sofas, roaring log burners, fresh running water, flushing toilets, eco-friendly toiletries, covered decks, and fully-equipped kitchens. Ain’t no slumming it here darlin’.

The Cwtch (sleeps 2) – ideal for 2 adults with room for one infant in a cot. You sleep in a stunning handmade four-poster bed that’s set back from the open-plan living space. There’s also an en-suite bathroom and kitchen, and a large deck extending out above the River Wye. Better still, there’s a panoramic cedar barrel wood-fired sauna installed on the lower decking along with a fabulous outdoor shower.

The sauna floats out above the woodland floor, offering breath-taking views of the river Wye below through the floor-to-ceiling glass end. So you can just lie there basking in the warmth, listening to the gentle crackle of the fire and watching kingfishers, herons and the occasional otter go by. For wellness lovers, it’s a fabulous sauna experience

Holly (sleeps 5) – up to 5 of you will be right at home in Holly. Like the other tents, she features an open-plan living space with kingsized four-poster bed, plus one bedroom with a double and single bunk above. There’s an en suite bathroom and kitchen, as well as a large deck with outside space to eat.

Holly also has an additional private deck at the back which is a haven of tranquillity. There’s a rainfall shower right beneath the trees, a hammock to lose hours reading, and a dreamy outdoor bath where you can spend your evening soaking in the woods. For pure indulgence, private massages and reflexology treatments can be arranged, surrounded by birdsong and the rustle of the trees

Ash (sleeps 5) – perfect 2 to 5 people, with space for one infant in a cot. Ash has two bedrooms – one double and one double with a bunk single above – and an en-suite bathroom and a kitchen. Outside you’ll find a firepit for cooking over and decking to chillax on.

Meadow (sleeps 5) – a gorgeous safari tent for up to 5 adults with space for one infant in a cot. Meadow is open plan, with a living space featuring a fairytale four-poster kingsized bed, as well as one bedroom with a double and bunk single above. There’s an en suite bathroom, kitchen, and a large deck with outside eating space.

The Ivy (sleeps 5) – just the thing for up to 5 of you, with space for a cot. There are two bedrooms (one double and one double with bunk single above) and there’s an en-suite bathroom and a kitchen. Outside, there’s a spacious deck for relaxing on or feasting al fresco. Plus, there’s a BBQ if you want to cook outdoors.

River (sleeps 6) – suitable for wheelchair users, this lovely space sleeps up to 6 people. It features a king-sized bed in an open-plan space, a double bed, a twin bunk bed, and a large wet room.

Outside the tents, there’s a fire pit and separate picnic table near the water, as well as the dark skies of the Brecon Beacons spread overhead – so you can cook under the stars if you wish. Or, if you prefer, you could head into one of our favourite towns – Hay on Wye, which is a mere 20 minute walk away – for some local warmth and hospitality.

Drovers Cottage

If you are after remoteness book this cottage, surrounded by a sheep-grazed common high above the Wye and no near houses. If you feel the need for company and communal gatherings the farm is a mere 400 meters away. This cottage has an enclosed walled garden.

The Shepherds Shack

A far cry from the Drovers shack it used to be! It overlooks the farm’s courtyard in the front and the sheep grazed common and stream to the rear. Book this cottage if you like to be in the thick of Farm Life. The garden forms part of the pebbled Farm Courtyard and is open.

The Cart-house

It’s an incredible location and the tents are absolutely beautiful. All in all we had the most amazing time and would totally return and will recommend to everyone.

Lovely experience staying amongst the trees, with beautiful views of the river. The fun of camping but the glamour and comfort of a hotel stay (although limited electric- so don’t pack your hairdryer!)

Uniquely brilliant. Log fire in a tent with all that you need!!!! As described before we arrived, all that’s needed is charging cables, clothes and food.

Stunning location, loved the feel of the place, very relaxing environment and felt nicely tucked away despite being a stone’s throw from the river. Luxurious private steam room and generally well kitted out. Fire pit of decking was well used and we were fully supplied with kindling and wood for this, the log burner and steam room. Loved the welcome basket and all staff were very welcoming and helpful. Just about the perfect trip.

Housekeeping and Useful Information

All Safari tents have a 2/4 gas ring cooker and there is a large cooler to store any foods you wish to cook and wine of course! We provide several cooking utensils, pots and pans, however if you would like to check with anything, please let us know so we can try and accommodate your request.

The Cwtch, Holly, Ash and Meadow have a firepit to use, whether it’s to toast marshmallows, or to just sit by during a chilly evening underneath the starry skies. We provide skewers (in the kitchen) and wood for the fire. The Ivy has a BBQ on the deck instead of a firepit.

There is a sink inside the Safari Tents; washing up liquid, clothes and sponges are provided.

We are connected to the mains, water from the taps is drinking water and there are lovely hot-water power showers in each tent.

Keeping warm

Each tent has a log burning stove, heaps of cosy welsh woollen blankets and even hot water bottles, we are sure you will be warm on the cosiest of nights.

The Safari Tents have an en-suite bathroom with flushing loo, a shower, and a selection of fluffy towels.

There is plenty of storage space under the beds. There are also hooks and hangers for clothing. There is lots of space for buggies and bikes under the decking. If you have larger bags that you would like to store, please just ask and we can look after them for you.

Accessibility

The Safari Tents are in wooded, secluded location’s and you should expect to walk at least five minutes from the car park.  Using a wheelbarrow to transport your luggage, you will travel along an stone path and rough terrain, meaning there is no direct vehicle access.
