Grand Princess Size and Passengers
The Grand Princess can hold 2,600 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Grand Princess has a space ratio of 41. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship's space-to-person ratio is about average.
The Grand Princess is one of one Grand-class ships currently sailing with Princess Cruises. The Grand Princess is currently the oldest ship in the Princess fleet.
Grand Princess Food and Restaurants
Food is a big part of any cruise, and there will plenty on the Princess Cruises Grand Princess. You have 10 different dining options to choose from. Of those options, 6 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 3 options have an additional fee. Some of those options are a set price and some have a la cart menu pricing. 70% of the dining options are included which means if you're watching your budget, you won't feel like you're missing out by not going to a lot of extra fee dining places.
In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Princess Cruises serves the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.
There are also plenty of bars available on this ship. Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.
Pools and Hot Tubs on Grand Princess
Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day in a pool, a cruise might not be the right choice. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.
The Princess Cruises Grand Princess has a total of 5 pools and 8 hot tubs. 1 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are exclusive access, which means there's either an extra charge to access them or you need to book a certain class of cabin to have access to them.
Grand Princess Features and Activities
There are quite a few things to do on the Grand Princess. These are the main amenities that are available. Some are included in the cost of the cruise, while others have an additional charge.
Princess Cruises is a premium cruise line. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.
Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year.
Grand Princess Onboard Costs
Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.
Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.
The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Princess Cruises ship.
Princess Cruises offers two packages to bundle onboard expenses. The Princess Plus package includes daily gratuities, the basic beverage package, 2 fitness classes, 2 casual dining meals, and internet for $60 per day per guest. The Princess Premier package upgrades to the premiere beverage package, wifi for up to 4 devices per guest, two specialty dining meals, unlimited casual dining meals, unlimited fitness classes, and a photo package for $80 per guest per day.

The balconies are built out from the body of the ship rather than cutting into existing deck space. There are 1,300 staterooms, some 70% of which have outside cabins with a private verandah or balcony.
Standard balconies measure around 50ft² and are spacious enough to hold two sun loungers, a table and chairs while those in the master suites have 176ft² of exterior space.
Because the vessel mainly cruises in the Mediterranean and does not have to pass through the Panama Canal, she is much wider and roomier than others of a similar size. Crew accommodation is provided for 1,100.
Princess Cruises has made a special effort to attract families onto this ship. The Fun Zone for children aged 2-12 includes a two-storey castle and dolls’ house with a whale-shaped pool.
There is an Off Limits club for 12-17 year olds with video wall, juke boxes and games rooms as well as other areas set aside for teenagers. A virtual reality centre offers under-sea simulator rides, complete with sound and motion effects. There are numerous events and competitions scheduled throughout the day and even when it’s time to go to bed, the Nickelodeon satellite channel is available in all cabins.
For anxious parents, there are fully qualified child sitting centres, including one which remains open until 1am and a special Adventures Ashore programme for young travellers wanting to explore without their parents.
The ship’s focal point is a three-deck Grand Plaza atrium featuring two panoramic lifts. There are three main dining rooms with other options such as a 24-hour buffet/bistro, a pizzeria, a wine and caviar bar, deck grill, trattoria, patisseries, a Tex-Mex bar and ice-cream parlour.
Numerous recreation spaces include three show lounges, nine bars, boutiques, libraries and shops. Sports facilities comprise a jogging track, nine hole putting green, nine Jacuzzis and four swimming pools, one covered by a retractable glass magradome for weather protection. There is also a wedding chapel allowing passengers to be married by the captain under the authority of the ship’s register.
Two fixed pitch propellers each driven by a Siemens diesel-electric propulsion motor of 21MW provide mains power while propulsion power and the ship’s service power comes from six Siemens generators, each of 11,520kW (15,662bhp) driven by Fincantieri GMT V-16 diesel engines.
Total power output is 93,972bhp. There are two emergency generators, each of 900kW.
Automation and control
On the bridge, the German-developed Nacos 65-3D system includes five inter-switched Atlas Multipilot workstations located on the main console and bridge wings.
Each of the display stations can be switched to operate as a radar / arpa or as a fully IMO-compatible electronic chart display and information system. This compatible to the Atlas Chartpilot with the added attribute of a real-time radar video overlay.

The Grand Princess Review: Ship, Venues, And Food
Setting sail on the Grand Princess opens up a world of captivating destinations if it’s your first time on a cruise ship. In this Grand Princess review, you’ll discover its public areas and why cruising on this Grand-class vessel may be suited to you.
Although launched before 2000, the vessel is one of the cruise line’s smaller ships. She is also one of the older vessels in the Princess fleet.
The ship underwent a refurbishment in 2019. The staterooms saw upgrades with larger flat-screen TVs and the addition of Luxury Princess beds.
🛳️ Ready to book your Princess cruise?
Select from itineraries to the Caribbean, Alaska, Mexico, and around the world. There’s a cruise to fit every budget.
Around the ship, Princess refreshed the pools, added the Ocean Medallion, and new venues such as the Salty Dog Grill and Slice Pizzeria.
As one of the jewels in Princess Cruises fleet, the ship boasts a passenger capacity of approximately 2,600 guests. Grand Princess passengers can opt for cruises and cruise tours to Alaska in the summer.
In the off-season, the ship repositions via Hawaii and Tahiti to Melbourne, Australia. However, you can also find the odd itinerary along the Pacific Coast and to Mexico. So, whether you board in San Francisco, Vancouver, or Sydney, here’s what you’ll expect onboard.
Grand Princess Review: First Impressions
Although not as large as the Discovery Princess, the line’s new ship , the Grand still has the signature amenities – the Sanctuary, Movies under the Stars, and aft pool.
While Princess refurbished the vessel in 2019, the abundance of wood remained, giving it a traditional and, dare I say, outdated décor.
The ship received a new Piazza atrium, which often became a central gathering spot for entertainment, dance classes, and live music. It’s an ideal spot to grab a morning latte, enjoy a late-night pizza, or chill to the sound of a piano playing.
Sometimes events are hosted in the Piazza during the day. I enjoyed a fruit and vegetable carving demonstration during my sailing.
The Promenade deck has the classic wraparound circuit, often removed on newer vessels, for those who love to walk laps.
It’s refreshing to have the use of the Medallion app onboard this older vessel. Whether you’re a fan of using a smartphone for everything or not, you can’t help but love the feature that it opens your stateroom door.
Grand Princess Stateroom Review
For our early May Alaska cruise itinerary from Vancouver, we booked an oceanview guaranteed cabin for three. We were assigned a room on deck 5 or the Plaza deck.
At the last minute, the third person opted not to go, so it became a stateroom for two.
However, when we arrived, our steward had lowered the Pullman bed and set up the cabin for three guests. It was later put away to accommodate two comfortably.
The room was dated but comfortable, and had enough storage for our Alaskan adventure. According to Princess’ website, the room measured approximately 165 sq. feet but seemed smaller due to the configuration of the closet.
There was no couch but a small desk instead. Adjacent to that was the usual mini-fridge, ideal for hoarding those late-night snacks.
I appreciated that the bedside lamps had USB plugs to charge our smartphones. Plus, there were other sockets to charge our batteries and use a laptop.
The bathroom was a typical cruise cabin size, small and unfortunately, with a shower curtain instead of the upgrade glass doors.
Our cabin steward kept our stateroom refreshed on a daily basis and provided clean towels when we needed them.
Being an older vessel, the Grand Princess doesn’t have lavish multi-bedroom suites. Its smallest cabins, interiors measure 160 sq. feet, and the largest, the Grand Suite has 730 sq. feet of floor space.
Laundry Services
One of the benefits of cruising with Princess is the ability to do laundry. This service is beneficial if you’re booked on an extended itinerary or sailing to Alaska, where you need clothing for three seasons.
With the exception of deck 14, you can find a self-serve launderette on every deck with staterooms. Most decks have the laundry room near the aft, except for deck 5, which is positioned near the bow, opposite cabin P208.
Washers and dryers cost USD 3; you can purchase tokens with your Ocean Medallion.
Dining And Food Options
The Grand Princess cruise ship has three main dining rooms; Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Botticelli. You will be assigned one of these if you request a set dining time. While the decors vary, the menu remains the same.
Alternatively, you can choose anytime dining where you can eat anywhere, at any time. Interestingly, the Crown Princess dining rooms share the same name.
Da Vinci and Botticelli Restaurants are located on deck 6, with no access between them. I always found this frustrating, as you must go up or down one deck to gain access.
Service and quality of food were good, but Princess tends to stand out above the rest with their presentation of desserts.
Princess Cruises has teamed up with one of the world’s top chocolatiers to create a delectable experience for chocolate lovers on board.
Horizon Court Buffet
The Horizon Court buffet on the Lido deck offers plenty of selection if you prefer something more casual. It offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
On the last night of the cruise, the buffet included complimentary sushi, something you usually get at a specialty restaurant. While it looked great, it didn’t match the fantastic sushi we are accustomed to in Vancouver.
We ate there for breakfast and lunch due to its convenience. There was always lots of selection, including gluten-free, vegan, and vegetation.
Other Dining Options
You can indulge in various chocolate desserts from the main dining room to specialty restaurants and the buffet. And for those who enjoy a good drink, there are chocolate-flavored cocktails and wine pairings to savor.
The Grand has not one but two places to get pizza at sea. Alfredo’s Pizzeria offers a sit-down experience, where thin-crust pizzas are made-to-order. Gluten-free crust is available to those who require it. It costs USD 14.99 to eat here, but waived if you have Princess Plus or Premier packages.
On the Lido deck, Prego Pizzeria offers a grab-and-go pizza by the slice. You won’t have an option for gluten-free here.
The Salty Dog Grill, added during the 2019 retrofit, offers craft burgers, tacos, fries, sandwiches, and hot dogs. Again, it’s a USD 14.99 fee if you don’t have an upgraded package.
You have two choices to get your caffeine fix: the International Café or Coffee & Cones. The International Café has tasty treats, pastries, and wraps if you need a quick bite between meals.
Coffee & Cones, as the name suggests, has soft-serve complimentary ice cream. You can also purchase USD 3 ice cream sandwiches, such as the Mint Paddy or Cookie Colada.
Tea drinkers might enjoy the Leaves Tea Lounge, which shares its space with a small library. Located on the Promenade deck, you can enjoy a specialty tea with a book, jigsaw puzzle, or daily puzzle.
Princess ships also offered afternoon tea, which was complimentary. Attend at least one tea ritual if you’re a fan of finger sandwiches, scones, and tasty treats.
Guests on a Princess Cruises vessel enjoy complimentary room service for continental breakfast. Outside of breakfast, there’s a minimal USD 5 charge (complimentary for Plus and Premier packages).
Crown Grill
If you want an elevated dining experience, consider dining at one of the specialty restaurants. While Princess may not have the best steakhouse across all lines, its Crown Grill steakhouse offers a pleasing menu.
At an affordable price of USD 39, it’s USD 25 cheaper than a steakhouse dinner on a Royal Caribbean ship.
The menu included 14oz rib-eye steak, double lamb chops, grilled jumbo shrimp, and lobster tail. I loved that the meal had a salt menu; the Hawaiian Black Salt was my favorite.
Make sure you leave room for dessert. I recommend the Key Lime Pie Bar or the 7-Layer S’Mores Stack, which are as sinfully delicious as it looks.
Sabatini’s
Slightly cheaper, the cuisine and atmosphere at Sabatini’s will whisk you away to a quaint village in Italy. Here, the handmade pasta and risotto are superb, packed with flavor and the right amount of seasoning.
Since I require gluten-free and lactose-free, I tend to avoid Italian restaurants. However, Sabatini’s was able to cater to my needs. The food was beyond amazing and a place I could have enjoyed for more than one night.
Sabatini’s has its own bar menu. So, you can enjoy a Prosecco cocktail, a classic Italian drink, or Limoncello with your dessert.
Bars And Lounges
On the Grand Princess, you’ll find twelve bars and lounges, each with its own unique ambiance and selection. The Mermaid’s Tail Bar, situated by the pool, serves refreshing tropical concoctions and ice-cold beers, perfect if you need respite from the sun-drenched deck.
Located between two casual food venues, you’ll also enjoy easy access to comfort food.
The Vista Lounge Bar, with its stunning panoramic views, offers a stylish setting to savor your favorite wine, cocktail, or spirits.
If you prefer a more intimate setting, the Wheelhouse Bar exudes a touch of elegance reminiscent of a classic gentlemen’s club. Patrons can enjoy top-shelf spirits like single malt whiskies and aged cognacs.
Since we were cruising to Alaska in early May, guests favored the indoor bars to escape the cold weather outside. Princess provides destination drinks and beers, so in Alaska, why not try an Alaskan beer?
Princess Cruises has elevated its standard drinks packages to Princess Plus and Princess Premier. It’s similar to competitors’ all-in-one, where Wi-Fi, gratuities, and drinks are included.
At USD 80 per day, the Premier package includes drinks up to USD 20. The Plus package costs USD 60 daily, giving you drinks up to USD 15 each.
Guests are limited to 15 beverages a day, and the cruise line bills any amount exceeding the price limit.
Entertainment
The Grand Princess boasts a variety of evening entertainment options typical to what you find on cruise ships. You can expect Broadway-style shows, live music performances, comedy presentations, and solo artists.
The Princess Theater provides two shows per evening so guests can attend, regardless of their dining schedule. Alternatively, the Vista Lounge on deck 7 aft provided entertainment too.
Live music often echoes through the Piazza and plays on the Lido deck in warmer destinations.
Daytime entertainment includes trivia, cooking demonstrations, game shows, and sports events. The onboard shops and casino also hosted events.
Depending on where you’re cruising, you may also enjoy educational lectures about the region’s wildlife and culture. In Alaska, for instance, themed activities enhanced the Alaskan experience.
Pools And Hot Tubs
While small, the Grand Princess has four swimming pools and eight hot tubs. As the aft, the Terrace pool provides those calming wake views.
Known for its serene atmosphere, you’ll enjoy fewer people than the main pool, and offers a more intimate setting.
One deck up, the Lido is home to two pools and four hot tubs. A giant TV screen next to the outdoor venue offers classic Movies under the stars. Unfortunately, it was a bit too cold to watch an outdoor movie in May.
The other pool is covered, making it an ideal vessel for cold climate destinations like Alaska.
On deck 15, you’ll find the last pool inside the spa, with two additional hot tubs. Adjacent to the pools, guests can enjoy complimentary steam rooms and saunas, which are missing from their newer vessels.
An adjoining fitness center offers all the standard gym equipment and aerobic classes.
If you’re cruising with children, Camp Discovery has a designated area that provides activities for different age groups. Voyagers welcome those from 6 months to two years.
Children 3 to 7 play in the whimsical area called The Treehouse. For ages 8 to 12, the Lodge provides outdoor sports and indoor games such as air hockey and foosball.
Teenagers (13 to 17 years) in The Beach House have a stylish hang-out to enjoy with new friends and listen to music.
Children can enjoy pizza parties, friendly competitions, and dance classes, as well as an arts program, games, and themed events.
Medallion App And Internet
In a world of advancing technology, Princess requires everyone to do everything on an app. Great if you have a smartphone and a working app.
We found the app glitchy at times; sometimes it worked, and other times it didn’t. When it worked, we could order food and drinks, and the crew members would find us onboard.
If you haven’t purchased the Princess Plus or Premier, there’s a one-time Ocean Now activation fee of USD 14.99 t order food and drinks.
The app is one of the easiest to navigate. If you don’t have a cellphone, you can access its features on one of the large LCD screens scattered around the ship.
If you require Wi-Fi, the MedallionNet basic service costs USD 15 per day, per device, for the cruise duration.
However, if you purchased the Princess Plus, you’ll receive Wi-Fi for one device. The Princess Premier package includes Wi-Fi for four devices.
MedallionNet was a bit slow and, at times, didn’t work in some areas of Alaska. While some cruise lines have gone to the faster Starlink, Princess has not.
Princess Patter
The Princess Patter provides you with daily activities, available dining venues, and “what’s going on” around the ship. With the introduction of the Medallion app, Princess, like many other lines, encourages guests to go paperless.
Since so many guests experience problems with the app or the app stops working, I still request my cabin steward leave me a paper copy of the Princess Patter each day.
Final Thoughts
The Grand Princess provides an ideal cruising vessel for those wanting to escape the crowds of a larger vessel. Being an older ship, it offers excellent itineraries at good value for money. You can also read my experience aboard her sister ship, the Crown Princess.
The staff is attentive, and the food is better than average. If you’re seeking a budget-friendly cruise without too many children, consider the Grand.

Princess Cruises ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list
Are you looking for the most venue-packed, resort-like Princess Cruises ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Princess cruise ships.
The biggest Princess cruise ships are, by their very nature, the Princess ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms, as well as the most sprawling decktop pool and lounge areas. The biggest Princess ships have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Princess fleet and the most cabins and suites — and the most variation in cabin and suite types.
With room for 4,000 passengers or more, the biggest Princess ships are truly large resorts of the sort you find at the biggest vacation destination on land. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Princess ships for you.
For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .
Still, Princess doesn't just operate large vessels. The Los Angeles-based cruise giant — the fifth largest cruise line in the world — also has several relatively small cruise ships in its fleet that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are nearly 40% smaller than the size of Princess Cruises' biggest ships. These smaller ships, notably, have less deck-top pool space and fewer interior venues than the biggest Princess cruise ships. However, with fewer people on board, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
The smallest Princess cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Princess cruise ship?
The biggest Princess cruise ship is the 3,660-passenger Discovery Princess, which is also the line's newest vessel. It debuted in March 2022.
Discovery Princess is the sixth and final vessel in the Royal class of Princess ships that began rolling out in 2013. They all are roughly the same size, but Discovery Princess is just a tad bigger than its sister ships at 145,000 gross tons. The other five ships in the Royal-class series measure from 142,229 to 144,650 gross tons. Note that gross tons is a size measurement referring to interior space, not weight.
The ships in Princess' Royal class are significantly bigger than the ships in the line's other two classes of vessels (the Grand class and Coral class) and have more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than the nine vessels in those classes.
The other Royal-class vessels that are similar in size to Discovery Princess are Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.
For more details on Discovery Princess, including what venues are on board and what it's like to sail on the vessel, see TPG's first impressions of Discovery Princess after an early sailing.
What is the smallest Princess cruise ship?
The smallest Princess cruise ship is the 2,000-passenger Coral Princess. Measuring just 91,267 gross tons, it's about 36% smaller than Discovery Princess, making it a significantly smaller vessel.
Coral Princess dates to 2002, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 21 years old, it's also one of the two oldest vessels in the Princess fleet and will probably be phased out sometime in the next decade.

While significantly smaller than the newest Princess ships, Coral Princess still has many of the signature spaces and venues found on new Princess vessels, including an Italian eatery called Sabatini's and a steakhouse.
Entertainment venues on Coral Princess include a relatively large main theater for production shows, a secondary lounge that offers comedy shows and other entertainment, and a casino. Like other Princess ships, the top deck of the vessel is mostly devoted to pool areas with hot tubs and lounge chairs. There's also a spa.
While smaller and older than the typical Princess ship, Coral Princess has a loyal following among Princess fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.
Are bigger Princess cruise ships coming?
Yes! Princess currently has two new, bigger cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. This will be the first of an all-new Sphere class of vessels for the line that will be made up of ships that will be notably bigger than anything Princess has had in its fleet before.
Measuring 175,500 gross tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest Princess cruise ship currently at sea — a significant increase. It'll be nearly double the size of the smallest Princess ships currently at sea.
The second new ship that Princess has on order, to be called Star Princess, will be a sister vessel to Sun Princess of a similar size. It's due to begin sailing in 2025.
The Sphere-class vessels are currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.
Note that this isn't the first time Princess has named a ship Sun Princess or Star Princess. Both are recycled names from past Princess ships. Princess operated smaller vessels under the Sun Princess and Star Princess names up until 2020.
TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for the new Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard.

In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, the new Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess is hoping to draw more upmarket travelers.
In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.
What's the difference between bigger and smaller Princess ships?
The biggest Princess cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Princess ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.
On the biggest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.
You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess' smaller cruise ships also generally are its older cruise ships and lack some of the above features, which are more typical of newer ships. These smaller Princess ships have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people.
While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's smaller vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.
That makes the smaller Princess ships a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the smallest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess.

Length of a cruise ship (Length Overall / LOA)
The cruise ship length is professionally referred to as LOA (length overall), meaning the maximum length between the two most distant points on its hull. LOA may also include the tip of the bowsprit - the pole extending from the ship's prow (usually on tall sailing ships, yachts, and smaller boats). The bowsprit is the "winning" part of the ship when competing in a race or during trials/speed tests.
Another passenger cruise ship length measuring (though not included in this survey) is called LWL. LWL signifies "loaded waterline length" (or just "waterline length"). It excludes the total length, denoting only the length at the point where the vessel sits in the water. The LWL measure plays an important role when assessing some ship properties, like "hull speed" (aka "displacement speed"), water displacement, the amount of paint needed for the ship's bottom, etc.
Longest cruise ship in the world
The longest cruise ships by size also occupy the first two positions in the list of the largest cruise ships of the world by passenger capacity and gross tonnage. The humongous Royal Caribbean's floating cities Allure and Oasis boast the whole 360 meters in length (1,181 ft), and breadth of 47 meters (154 ft), the unbelievable for a passenger cruise ship tonnage of 225,300 tons, and max crew-passenger capacity of almost 8,500 (2,170+6,300) - each!
Weight of a cruise ship (tonnage) and draft
The size (tonnage weight) of a cruise ship is measured in "gross tonnage" (GT). It relates to the vessel's internal volume (keel to funnel* and to the outside of the hull) and applying a mathematical formula. The cruise ship tonnage is generally used for determining registration fees, port fees, safety rules, regulations. Another ship data (though not included in this survey) is the vessel's "deadweight tonnage" (DWT), which is the weight a vessel can safely carry (cargo, passengers, etc).
The cruise ship draft (or draught) measures the number of meters/feet from the waterline to the lowest point of the keel - or the ship's "invisible" portion below the surface (and especially when loaded). The cruise ship's draft is very important when considering docking in a particular port, sailing through channels or the inland waterways of the continents (rivers and canals).
*Note: Actually, the ship's funnel is the only part of the enclosed interior space that is NOT included in its Gross Tonnage measurement.
Cruise ship weight
As one of our fans Mr John Spooner (cruiser / Retired Master Mariner) have pointed out, the "Gross Tonnage" weight is a measurement of VOLUME, and not of MASS. GT is an index related to marine vessels' overall internal volume. According to Wikipedia's definition:
- "Gross Tonnage" (GT) calculations are based on the volume of all the ship's enclosed spaces.
- "Gross Register Tonnage" (GRT) is the vessel's total internal volume measured in "register tons" (each ton equals 100 ft3 / 2,83 m3).
- Neither GT nor GTR measures the vessel's displacement (mass), but really show how big cruise ships are.
- "Deadweight Tonnage" (DWT) measures how much weight a cruise ship (or any of the marine vessel types) can carry safely. This a weighted sum of the vessel's cargo (incl provisions, passengers, crew), fuel, water (fresh and ballast), etc.
- "Displacement Tonnage" is how much weight the water that a cruise ship (any vessel) displaces when floating (the total weight of the ship / including its contents). Displacement is usually applied to the navy rather than commercial marine vessels. It is measured when the ship is loaded at full capacity.
