Golf fans shocked as latest LIV Golf vs PGA Tour TV ratings are revealed

Golf fans react as TV ratings are revealed from last weekend's LIV Golf Mayakoba and PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Golf fans have been reacting to the latest TV ratings following LIV Golf 's first event of the season at Mayakoba and the PGA Tour 's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which was reduced to a 54-hole tournament following a final-round washout.

With no live golf played on Sunday over on the PGA Tour, it left the door wide open for golf fans to head over to The CW Network should they so wish and view the final round of LIV Golf Mayakoba in Mexico.

It was also a particularly strong leaderboard heading into the final round too, with Joaquin Niemann leading by two strokes over LIV Golf debutant and arguably the best player in the world, Jon Rahm .

But despite everything aligning perfectly for LIV Golf in the final round, unfortunately its viewing figures on The CW Network were close to five times less to that of CBS Sports ' third-round coverage of the PGA Tour's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am , which ended up being the final round due to bad weather.

Wyndham Clark was crowned the winner after surging into the third-round read following a stunning 60 , which marked the lowest-ever round at famed Pebble Beach.

It was not the lowest round of the weekend, however, as Niemann fired a course-record 59 in the first round at Mayakoba.

Golf fans shocked as latest LIV Golf vs PGA Tour TV ratings are revealed

While Clark's round marked the lowest of his blossoming PGA Tour career, the 60 did not count as an official record at Pebble Beach as a result of preferred lies being in place.

Niemann ended up defeating his former mentor Sergio Garcia at the fourth extra hole in darkness over at Mayakoba, while Rahm led his new Legion XIII to a four-stroke team victory despite throwing away the individual title when finding the penalty area with his tee shot down the 17th.

PGA Tour trounces LIV Golf

According to official TV ratings from the weekend's action in the men's professional game, CBS had 1.951m viewers during Saturday's third round.

In comparison, LIV Golf's second-round action on Saturday drew 168,000 viewers on The CW Network but an improved 432,000 viewers on Sunday.

Pebble Beach PGA (Saturday), CBS: 1.951m LIV Golf (Saturday), CW: 168K LIV Golf (Sunday), CW: 432K https://t.co/I7csAFZ3vK — Sports TV Ratings (@SportsTVRatings) February 6, 2024

What must be taken into consideration is the above numbers do not include streaming available on both the LIV Golf Plus App and the LIV Golf YouTube channel.

While these figures have not been made official, LIV Golf's final round YouTube video has amassed 165,000 views.

One big positive for LIV Golf is the fact its final-round coverage of the first event of the season on The CW Network was superior to that of its first event in 2023, also at Mayakoba, which had 291,000 viewers.

So it's not all bad news for LIV Golf.

Some think its unfair to compare the two without knowing how many viewers came through the LIV Golf App, while others believe LIV Golf cannot and will not ever reach the peak of PGA Tour TV ratings no matter how much money is pumped into the Saudi-backed

Scottie Scheffler Players-2024

Despite a thrilling finish on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass, NBC drew just 3.5 million viewers for Sunday’s finale of the Players Championship , down 17 percent from last year’s final-round audience of 4.1 million.

Overall, the troubling numbers align with the downward trend this season for the PGA Tour. For instance, the final round of the Arnold Palmer checked in with just 2.3 million, down 30 percent from last year’s 3.3 million.

Some are blaming Scottie Scheffler, who critics argue – despite being the world No.1 – has little in the way of charisma and is generally considered a bore to watch.

“He’s too nice to be interesting,” my reality show-addicted wife tells me.

Yet, how can Scheffler be blamed as he won both the 2024 (3.5m) and 2023 (4.1m) editions of the Players?

In reality, most experts blame the bleeding of TV viewers on the fracturing of professional golf, where about half of the game’s marquee stars (Rahm, Koepka, DJ) and its most familiar names (Phil, Bubba, Sergio) now play on the Saudi-backed tour.

Cameron Smith Wins The 150th Open Championship Old Course St Andrews

For instance, of the top-50 ranked players in the world following the 2022 Players Championship – two weeks before LIV Golf launched, twenty-one (21) players are now part of the breakaway league, including Jon Rahm (1), Cameron Smith (6), Dustin Johnson (10), Bryson DeChambeau (12), Louis Oosthuizen (13), Tyrrell Hatton (15), Joaquin Niemann (18), Brooks Koepka (21), Abraham Ancer (20), Paul Casey (24), Jason Kokrak (27), Patrick Reed (28), Kevin Na (30), Thomas Pieters (31), Talor Gooch (32), Harold Varner (40), Marc Leishman (42), Matthew Wolff (43), Phil Mickelson (45), Sergio Garcia (49), and Cameron Tringale (50). That doesn’t even include fan favorites and familiar names like Martin Kaymer, Branden Grace, Graeme McDowell, Bubba Watson, Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, and Charl Schwartzel, among others.

Does the exclusion of those names from PGA Tour fields help or hurt with the TV ratings?

Hideki Matsuyama Wins 2024 Genesis Invitational

Meanwhile, before the back-to-back wins by Scheffler, the PGA Tour was already enduring something of an identity crisis with little-knowns and journeymen seemingly winning every week. Even the two victories by known “stars” (Wyndham Clark and Hideki Matsuyama) were not exactly best-case scenarios for PGA Tour brand building. First, Clark’s win occurred at the rain-shortened Pebble Beach Pro-Am which didn’t even include a final round, while the Japanese star, despite spending the last decade-plus on the U.S. tour, continued to talk through an interpreter at Riviera.

Additionally, the most familiar and marketable names who remain on the PGA Tour – Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland – have yet to win and are barely contending in 2024.

Bottomline: the reunification can’t come soon enough.

NBC draws 3.5M viewers for Scottie Scheffler's win in the Players Championship (per @SportsTVRatings ), down from 4.1M last year. Two years ago: 2.9M for Sunday coverage (Cam Smith won on a Monday). 2021: 4.6M for Justin Thomas. pic.twitter.com/pfMbbvtPO8 — Josh Carpenter (@JoshACarpenter) March 19, 2024

LPGA has young star Rose Zhang and great golf. So why is women's tour stagnating?

If the lpga and nbc can't sell charismatic american superstar rose zhang as she tries to win the u.s. women's open at pebble beach, it’s not a great sign for the overall health of the tour..

Portrait of Dan Wolken

This is arguably the best time to be in the business of women’s sports.

The World Cup beginning later this month in Australia and New Zealand is going to smash records for ticket sales and television ratings. The WTA recently announced an initiative to reach equal prize money with the men’s tennis tour by 2027, a standard that has already been in place at the Grand Slams for several years.

The Women’s Final Four and Women’s College World Series are showing positive viewership trends, and the NCAA is poised to cash in when their television rights come up for renewal. Athletes in those sports and more have become big stars, with some generating six-figure marketing deals.

Professional team sports are also undergoing a transformation. The Seattle Storm recently sold a 14 percent stake at a $151 million valuation, setting a new benchmark for the WNBA. At the halfway mark of its season, the NWSL posted increases of roughly 50 percent from last year both in attendance and streaming viewers.

So there’s no longer a debate about where women’s sports fit into the landscape. With the right investment and marketing, they aren’t just a niche; there’s real mainstream appeal.

Which makes it all the more confusing and troubling that the LPGA seems like it has stagnated at best and is getting left behind at worst at the very moment it should be taking off like a rocket.

This week, the U.S. Women’s Open will be held at Pebble Beach for the first time in tournament history, offering the biggest prize in women’s golf projected at around $10 million with roughly $1.8 million going to last year’s winner. On Saturday and Sunday, NBC will devote primetime coverage to a women’s major for the first time.

And the star of the show is going to be Rose Zhang, a 20-year-old from Southern California who turned pro in May after 141 weeks as the world’s No. 1 amateur and promptly won her first start on the LPGA Tour . Oh, and she also happens to own the women’s course record at Pebble, shooting 63 a couple years ago while playing for Stanford.

If there were ever a time for the stars to align in women’s golf, this is it. But is the infrastructure in place to capitalize on the moment?

It would be incredibly unfair, of course, to place the entire burden of the sport on the shoulders of a young woman who was in college a few months ago. Zhang could very well be in contention on Sunday, but there's a good chance she won’t be. That's the nature of the sport.

But just a couple weeks ago, she was very much in the mix at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, mounting a Sunday charge at Baltusrol Golf Club that almost saw her win a major in just her second tournament as a pro.

I was glued to the television for the final round. It was among the most compelling golf I’ve seen this year as another 20-year-old phenom, China’s Ruoning Yin, took the title. But on social media, it didn’t seem like any of it was breaking through − a sense that was confirmed by a mediocre television number (658,000 viewers) that was actually lower than last year.

If the LPGA and NBC can’t sell a charismatic American superstar trying to win a major fresh out of college on one of America’s most well-known and historic golf courses, it’s not a great sign for the overall health of the tour.

I’m not here to tell anyone what to watch on a Sunday afternoon, but from where I sit − more as a fan than a journalist on this topic − women’s golf has long been one of the most undervalued properties in sports.

Are we ever going to get to the point where a U.S. Women’s Open final round out-rates a men’s U.S. Open like we often see in a tennis Grand Slam final? Probably not.

But unlike the men’s game, where technology and power have simply overwhelmed most golf courses, the LPGA offers spectacular shot-making with a variety of clubs and spins and strategies for attacking holes that go beyond bashing it as far as possible with a driver.

If you like golf, why wouldn’t you like watching that?

With Zhang’s arrival, it’s time for the big stakeholders in golf to embrace the LPGA like a serious opportunity to broaden the entire sport’s fan base. That takes financial investment, and it takes passion − neither of which are being shown at an acceptable level to meet this moment.

Sure, the USGA is committing at least $10 million to the Women’s Open purse. It’s still half of what the men make. The same goes for the R&A ($7.3 million to $14 million) and the PGA of America, which has more than doubled its prize money from a few years ago to $10 million but still falls short of the $17.5 million going to the men.

Save the excuses about the women’s game not selling as many tickets or not having as many fans as the men and instead ask yourself why that is when a comparable sport like tennis has found a way to sell the women’s game at an extremely high level.

Are you holding tournaments just to hold tournaments, or are you "growing the game," which is the catch phrase you’ve heard plenty over the last year to justify all kinds of morally problematic behavior? Maybe, just maybe, if these organizations invested more, they’d actually put some pressure on themselves to help market the sport.

Speaking of which, in 2014 the USGA made the bold move to stage the Women’s Open at Pinehurst one week after the men played the same course, which meant a full week of promoting it. Surprise, surprise: Television ratings went up 92 percent from the year before.

Nobody is denying that there are challenges. It’s a touchy subject, but the volume of excellent South Korean players coming onto the tour over the last 20 years − some of whom don’t speak much English or aren’t comfortable communicating in it − has presented some barriers for American audiences.

However, world No. 1 Jin Young Ko speaks excellent English and is a delightful personality. The current top-10 of the LPGA season-long race includes two Americans, a Canadian, an Australian, a New Zealander and an Irish woman in addition to two Koreans along with women from Thailand and China − in other words, a tour that looks like the golf-playing world.

Meanwhile, when healthy, Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda could be the face of the game. Megan Khang, whose parents came to the U.S. as Vietnam War refugees from Laos, has one of the best backstories in all of sports.

If you can’t sell that − especially in a sport that needs more women playing and watching after decades of acting like an Old Boys Club − then you don’t have much imagination for what’s possible.

All around us, we’re seeing other sports figure out how to do it. With Rose Zhang as the LPGA’s fresh-faced superstar, another window of opportunity has opened. Will golf finally walk through it?

Pebble Beach in primetime gives women's golf unprecedented opportunity to attract new fans

PEBBLE BEACH — This week's U.S. Women's Open, making its maiden visit to Pebble Beach, is an unprecedented opportunity for professional women's golf. With it comes 12 hours of weekend coverage that lasts into primetime on the East Coast, an alchemy that provides the LPGA Tour a first-of-its-kind opportunity to reach new audiences.

"Our Golf Channel broadcast from our West Coast [tournaments] are some of our most highly viewed events, and then to have that on NBC Network television in primetime for the first time ever, it's really, really special," Golf Channel commentator and major winner champion Morgan Pressel said.

"Then you put the two of them together. People are going to tune in because they've heard of Pebble Beach. They might have never watched an LPGA event in their life, but they've heard of Pebble Beach, and here it is on Sunday evening and they're flipping through channels and they're like, ‘Wow, this is really amazing; this is some incredible golf. What an exciting event.’”

Building towards this moment, players have clamored for years about the importance of playing at prestigious venues to entice casual fans to watch them compete. Pebble Beach fits the bill, as golf fans can picture some of the game's most iconic holes with their eyes closed.

With a simple search on YouTube you can relive the images of Jack Nicklaus' 1-iron on 17 at the 1972 U.S. Open, Tom Watson chipping in on the same par 3 to best Nicklaus a decade later, or Tiger Woods' world-shattering 2000 performance, among many historic golf moments. The LPGA's players can now benefit from the memories evoked from the six U.S. Opens held at Pebble.

"I think being on iconic venues is a more sustainable improvement for the tour, because it increases the media value, and you have to increase media value to attain more money," Michelle Wie West, the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open champion, said.

Visiting heralded golf courses isn't a one-off trend for the LPGA. Only two weeks ago, the KPMG Women's PGA Championship was held at New Jersey’s Baltusrol Golf Club, the first time a women’s major was played there since 1985. The AIG Women's Open was at Muirfield last year, which held 16 Open Championships before the women made their debut, female members finally admitted in 2019. They'll return to St. Andrews next year, the second appearance there along with 2007. In its first trip to Southern California, the U.S. Women's Open goes to Riviera Country Club in 2026. The women return to the West for a major again next year at Sahalee in Sammamish, Wash., for the Women's PGA.

Michelle Wie West, Rose Zhang

Two of golf's biggest attractions, Michelle Wie West and Rose Zhang, walk together during a practice round at Pebble Beach ahead of the U.S. Women's Open.

Visiting West Coast venues paid off recently for the U.S. Women's Open. Two years ago at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, with seven hours on NBC, the event averaged 600,000 viewers, for a 62-percent increase in viewership year-over-year.

The West Coast boost occurred just two weeks ago at the men's U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club, where ratings averaged 3.4 million viewers across NBC's platforms. It's the best ratings since … wait for it … 2019 when it was on the West Coast at Pebble Beach.

The USGA strongly believes the women also will see a ratings jump from playing at Pebble. "It wouldn't surprise me if we were 50 percent higher than Pine Needles," USGA Chief Commercial Officer Jon Podany said.

NBC looks to capitalize on the potential of Pebble by airing 12 hours over the weekend, from 3-9 p.m. EDT on Saturday and Sunday. That compares to seven hours of coverage of the U.S. Women's Open on NBC the last two years. The USGA adds another layer of intrigue and analysis by bringing a full ShotLink-style system into the fold .

NBC Sports Executive Vice President of Golf Tom Knapp explained that internal Golf Channel viewership data supports the belief that the week could pay off with an expanded LPGA audience. While he didn't go into specific numbers, he also expects the primetime telecast to exceed the ratings of recent U.S. Women's Opens.

LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, in an email, noted that LPGA telecasts on NBC versus events on cable equate to a whopping 450-percent increase in viewership. Getting into more primetime hours fulfills a lot of the LPGA's goals to increase its audience.

"When we talk about continuing to elevate the women's game, investment is critical," Marcoux Samaan said. "Investment comes from increasing purses, and playing on great golf courses, but it also comes through increasing exposure to our world-class athletes, offering the best technology and investing in more aggressive marketing, which all helps more people become fans of our athletes."

In 2022, the tour had nine tournaments on national TV for 32 hours. That's on pace to expand this year, with 25 hours of major coverage on NBC just between the Chevron Championship, the KPMG Women's PGA and the U.S. Women's Open. That's a half-hour off the entire time the LPGA was on NBC in 2021 and nearly double the airtime for those three majors that year.

The Chevron in April, played for the first time outside of Houston after moving from the California desert, highlights the increased audience size from more national airtime. The previous year, the major was televised only on Golf Channel. Marcoux Samaan pointed out that when NBC stuck with this year’s Chevron when it went into a playoff (won by Lilia Vu), the broadcast peaked at 1.54 million viewers and was the top-rated sports program NBC aired that week. That Sunday, NBC averaged 941,000 viewers across all platforms, a 13-year high for the major and a 170-percent increase from the 2022 telecast.

"Majors are our biggest opportunity to grow our sport and to grow this tour," LPGA veteran Stacy Lewis said. "It's when we get the most people watching, the most people here in the media center paying attention. These weeks are so, so important, and where you play matters. It matters to the casual fan. It matters to who's watching."

The players' opportunity to showcase their talents on the best courses during their majors can be credited to the work among those at the LPGA, PGA of America, USGA and R&A. They have mapped out venues years in advance and eased the complex challenge of NBC booking airtime for the majors.

"It enables us to showcase the women as they should be," Knapp said.

Knapp added that the goal is always to go forward with more hours every year. Should all go according to the expectations that women’s golf delivers this week, the road is paved for further national TV growth.

"The bigger and broader the audience, the bigger the opportunity is on any of our platforms," Knapp said. "Growing the audience could absolutely yield more hours."

lpga tour tv ratings

The Chevron Championship’s move from California to Texas might not have been popular with LPGA players, but the tour’s first major of the year was a bona fide success in terms of its television audience, according to numbers that were unveiled early this week.

The final round of coverage from The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands averaged 941,000 viewers across all platforms, including NBC Sports, the NBC Sports app and Peacock, which is up considerably from the 349,000 average viewers when the event was on Golf Channel last year.

But things really heated up when champ Lilia Vu and Angel Yin went to a playoff, with a peak of 1.54 million viewers or a 1.0 rating between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m. ET. Yin went in the water as the two played 18 again in the playoff, and Vu dropped a birdie putt to capture her first major title.

The tournament’s numbers were clearly aided by a schedule move away from the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and into a better timeslot against the PGA Tour’s Zurich Classic.

Other important stats:

  • This year’s event was the most-watched since 2010 and was the best for NBC Sports
  • The Chevron was the top-rated sports program on NBC for the week
  • It was also in the top 20 sports programs for the week across all broadcast networks
  • Even though it falls in the heart of a busy week that included NBA and NHL playoffs, Major League Baseball games and the PGA Tour’s Zurich, Sunday’s broadcast of the Chevron was among the top 10 sports broadcasts for the day

Why Nelly Korda was right to call out TV coverage after historic victory

Nelly Korda's Chevron victory sparked a debate about women's golf on TV.

On Sunday evening, golf history welcomed a new young star. Her name is Nelly Korda.

As her tournament-ending birdie poured into the middle of the 18th hole at the Chevron Championship , Korda joined Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only players ever to win five straight LPGA events. Korda, 25, placed a unique cherry on top of that achievement by nabbing her fifth straight at the Chevron, annually the first major on the LPGA calendar.

The win launched Korda, already the world’s top-ranked player, into another orbit — representing the fulfillment of the promise that made her one of the most anticipated young stars in the sport close to a decade ago. But it also came in stark relief to the fanfare that has surrounded the recent meteoric rise of another women’s star, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, who captivated the nation during a championship-game run with the Hawkeyes women’s basketball team.

While Clark’s run resulted in historic television ratings for women’s basketball and a national conversation around women’s sports, Korda’s run — which has covered almost the same stretch as the entirety of the 2024 WBB season — hardly registered outside of the niche world of golf. Later on Sunday, after her victory, Korda was finally asked for her opinion why.

Below is an extended sampling of this week’s Hot Mic Newsletter on Korda’s insightful answers, and on the greater conversation around women’s golf on television. Shortly after notching a historic fifth-straight win at the Chevron Championship, Nelly Korda offered a friendly (but stern) message to golf’s TV networks:

“We need a stage. We need to be on primetime TV, and we need to showcase the talent we have out here, which is a lot. We need the support from not just the crowds but the television networks.”

Korda’s message was clear, even if she risked igniting another round of whataboutist retorts from the “ nobody cares” segment of the golf internet: For women’s golf to succeed on television like men’s golf, it needs to be shown on television like men’s golf. As for that insipid argument about floundering ratings on small cable networks being proof of women’s golf’s inherent inferiority, Korda seemed to be arguing that the solution to women’s golf’s popularity woes was neither the chicken (major TV networks) nor the egg (women’s golf), but rather the frequency of the two working together.

That message might have sounded strange, particularly on the heels of NBC carrying two straight days — and at least 7 hours — of nationally televised tournament coverage from the “Chev.” But anyone watching the telecast knew the coverage was badly wounded relative to a traditional men’s weekend tournament round.

There was hardly any technology worth showing, and only a handful of camera crews were on site to cover the action — a pittance next to the coverage CBS gave Scottie Scheffler’s victory in Hilton Head. On Sunday, flipping channels from CBS’s coverage to NBC’s was a bit like going from 1.5x speed to .5x.

Thankfully, Korda was in the final group and leading come Sunday afternoon, so NBC’s cameras didn’t miss much. But the investment was clearly lacking.

NBC’s DEFENSE …

Is salient. Carlton Woods, which hosts the Chevron, is a spread-out tournament layout, which creates all manner of challenges for TV productions utilizing miles worth of fiber optic cable and strike crews needing to set up tower coverage. It’s hard to get set up for tournament play in the best of circumstances, and adding additional layers of production glut adds further cost and time to the NBC team.

NBC is also not in control of pace of play, which — at a shade over six hours on Sunday — was horrendous and surely contributed to the slow-motion feel of the Sunday telecast. Also, the fact that Korda was so far distanced from the remainder of the rest of the field for most of Sunday’s round, and the historical context with which she was competing, left the broadcast giving her Tiger-like levels of airtime. Considering she was quick to play, that meant plenty of waiting.

WHY WE DON’T HEAR KORDA’S CRITIQUE MORE OFTEN

In truth, it’s awkward for anyone in the women’s game to criticize NBC. The network is one of the few outlets committed to showing big-time women’s golf to a national audience — as it will do a few more times this year — while many others networks are too content to sit on the sidelines.

Criticizing the lone network that has invested considerable resources year in and year out to showcase and monetize women’s golf feels a bit like biting the hand that feeds you — and there are enough challenges facing the pro golf business model these days without intentionally upsetting its financial backers.

THE PROBLEM

Is bigger than just NBC, which is not alone on the receiving end of some criticism here.

The problem is that “growing” women’s golf, and legitimate stars within it like Nelly, requires giving regular golf fans a reason to tune in and stay tuned in. Right now the big players, NBC included, aren’t consistent enough in helping the game get there.

THE SOLUTION

The LPGA making a change to actually enforce its own slow-play rules is an obvious step in the right direction. The tour has the chance to lead the sport in ushering in a pace-of-play revolution that would serve the supplemental benefit of making women’s golf coverage considerably more entertaining for television audiences. This is so obvious, and on Sunday, it was so needed.

It would also help matters if NBC invested a bit more fruitfully into its major women’s broadcasts. The business has to make sense to justify it, sure, but I can’t think of many expenses that are easier to justify than a very marketable female American star looking to extend a historic winning streak at a major championship.

3

  • LPGA's 2021 ANA Inspiration tournament, recently renamed Chevron Championship , garnered 32% more daily average viewers than the 200,000 viewers recorded in 2019 . This would put the average viewership figure at approximately 264,000 ( 132% X 200,000 ).
  • The 2021 " Augusta National Women’s Amateur" (ANWA) event, LPGA's competitor in the U.S. women's golf scene, averaged 996,000 viewers on NBC. The 2021 ANWA also received a 1.0 overnight TV rating on Saturday night of the event.

Men’s Tennis vs. Women’s Tennis

  • After comparing the top tennis tournaments in the U.S., the research focused on the U.S. Open since it is the most prestigious tennis event in the U.S. and its viewership/rating data points were more readily available.
  • In 2021 , the viewership of the women's final of the tennis U.S. Open outperformed the men's for the fifth time in just seven years. The women's U.S. Open finale recorded 2.44 million viewers and a 0.38 rating against 2.05 million and a 0.35 rating for the men's.

5

  • In 2020 , the viewership of the women's final of the U.S. Open averaged 2.15 million viewers and a 1.3 rating during the "two-hour match window." The entire three-hour coverage averaged 1.86 million viewers and a 1.1 rating . The 2 020 U.S. Open men's final averaged 1.48 million viewers and rated 0.9 .
  • Also in 2019 , the women's U.S. Open dominated television viewership averaging 3.22 million viewers and a rating of 2.0 . The men's championship averaged 2.75 million viewers and a 1.6 television rating. Notably, the number of viewers for the women's U.S. Open finals dominated the men's since 2017 to 2020 .

Men's Soccer vs. Women's Soccer

  • To provide a comparison of women's and men's television rating and viewership in soccer, the research team considered the most popular men ( Major League Soccer ) and women ( National Women Soccer League ) leagues as well as the national teams.

Men's Soccer

  • In 2021 , viewership for the regular season of Major League Soccer (MLS) averaged 276,000 viewers across ESPN channels. That was an improvement to 2 0 2 0 ' s average of 233,000 viewers. The MLS Cup (final) match in 2021 averaged 1.14 million viewers on ABC, peaking at about 1.6 million viewers, which was an improvement to 2020 and 2019 averages of 1.07 million and 825,000 , respectively.
  • The United States Men's National Soccer Team's (USMNT) 2021 season averaged 745,625 viewers on English-language television, which was a 294% year-over-year increase. Across Spanish-language television, the USMNT viewership averaged about 1.061 million viewers.

Women's Soccer

  • Only nine National Women Soccer League (NWSL) games were broadcast in 2020 with the average viewership at 434,000 . While 2021 average viewership figures are unavailable for the league, the season finale recorded 525,000 television viewers peaking at 571,000 in the second half.
  • Notably, MLS seems to be struggling in 2022 while NWSL's television ratings are soaring. As of April 2022 , aired NWSL matches attracted over 450,000 viewers while MLS matches recorded an average of 283,000 viewers per game. Only one MLS game drew more viewers than NWSL games, which led some experts to believe that NWSL's current media r i g h t s deal of $1.5 million annually is undervalued.

6

  • In 2021 , the United States Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) recorded an average television viewership of 401,913 viewers in the U.S. This was an improvement from 322,667 viewers, on average, in 2020 . USWNT's match against Sweden was the most-watched in 2021 with 713,000 viewers on FOX.
  • Importantly, the U.S. Soccer Federation agreed to pay members in the men's and women's national teams equally in May 2022 . However, soccer league teams are yet to do the same.

Men’s Figure Skating vs. Women’s Figure Skating

  • For this part, the research focuses on statistics from the U.S. Figure Skating Championship , the national figure skating tournament organized by U.S. Figure Skating. While there are various completions leading up to the championship event, only viewership and rating statistics the latter are available.
  • In 2022 , the U.S. Figure Skating Championships' women's free skate category averaged 2.39 million viewers and a 1.5 rating on NBC, which was 11% higher than in 2021 (2.15 million viewers, 1.4 rating) . The women's short program averaged 468,000 and a 0.29 rating .
  • The men's free skate averaged 1.13 million viewers and a rating of 0.7, which were year-over-year improvements of 41% and 32% , respectively. T h e short program for men attracted 1.43 million viewers and received a 0.9 rating .
  • Historically, women's figure skating has been dominating men's for years. In 2017 , for example, the U.S. Figure Skating Championships' women's free skate event garnered a rating of 1.8 and about 2.8 million viewers. The men's event recorded a rating of 1.1 and about 1.6 million viewers.

Men’s Swimming vs. Women’s Swimming

  • After reviewing several national swimming events in the U.S., it was apparent that while they have categories for men and women, they do not have separate competitions for men and women and competitions for both genders usually are held simultaneously. Being that only overall viewership and ratings statistics are available, the research team has provided several available statistics for the Swimming Olympic Qualifiers and the Swimming Pro Swim Series.
  • The "2022 USA Swimming Pro Swim Series" drew 537,000 viewers on ABC, according to Nielsen. The eight-night of the "2021 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials" averaged "2.7 million viewers per f i n a l s session on NBC."

Additional Findings

  • The regular season of the 2021 NFL recorded an average of 17.1 million viewers (TV and digital). Also, about 112.3 million viewers tuned in to the Super Bowl.
  • Unfortunately, like most other women sports in the U.S., the growth of women's professional football is limited by lack of television coverage. After signing a media deal with ESPN2, the Women’s Football Alliance managed to garner 146,108 viewers and a rating of 0.12 for its PRO National Championship match in July 2022 . Moriya Jutanugarn emerges from tight pack to win Portland Classic for 3rd LPGA Tour title

  • Copy Link copied

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Moriya Jutanugarn emerged from a tight pack late Sunday afternoon at Columbia Edgewater to win the Portland Classic for her third career LPGA Tour title and first individual victory in more than six years.

Three strokes behind leader Andrea Lee going into the round, Jutanugarn shot a 6-under 66 in mostly calm conditions for a two-stroke victory over three players.

“Kind of been a long time since my last win,” Jutanugarn said. “To be in contention for the last few days, it’s kind of nice. I feel like I haven’t been in contention for a little while. It kind of keep your on toes and exciting.”

Jutanugarn finished at 22-under 266, playing the first 71 holes without a bogey. The 30-year-old Thai player birdied Nos. 13-15 and made an 8-footer to save par on the par-3 16th. She made a short birdie putt on the par-4 17th and closed with a bogey.

“When you make that putt it kind of feels a lot better and like taking a lot of the pressure off,” Jutanugarn said about the par save on 16.

Narin An (66), Nataliya Guseva (68) and Angel Yin (69) tied for second. The 21-year-old Guseva is the first Russian player with an LPGA Tour card.

Image

“I’m, honestly, pretty happy,” Guseva said. “I put a lot of work into that, but at the same time, I’m kind of disappointed because I knew like I could win this thing very easily.”

Jutanugarn’s previous individual LPGA Tour victory came in the 2018 HUGEL-JTBC LA Open. In 2021, she teamed with younger sister Ariya Jutanugarn to win the 2021 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational.

“So excited and so proud of her, because like I know she been waiting for so long,” said Ariya Jutanugarn, a 12-time LPGA Tour winner who closed with a 65 on Sunday to tie for ninth at 17 under.

Sofia Garcia (68) and So Mi Lee (70) tied for fifth at 19 under, and second-round leader Dewi Weber (72) was another stroke back.

Lee, the 2022 winner for her lone LPGA Tour title, had a 74 to finish in the group at 17 under.

Weber dropped back with a double bogey on the par-4 15th and a bogey on 16. She was trying to win for the first time on the LPGA Tour and send a statement to the Dutch Olympic committee that it made a mistake by declining to send her to Paris.

She qualified for the Olympics under International Golf Federation standards, but was left out because of the Netherlands’ separate standards for all sports to meet a realistic chance of a top-eight finish.

With the Olympics next week, no one from the top 30 in the world ranking was in the field. The lone Olympian in Portland was Aditi Ashok of India. She finished with a 72 to tie for 22nd at 14 under.

With her victory in the Olympic women’s golf competition at Le Golf National, Lydia Ko both won the gold medal and secured the final point necessary for inclusion in the LPGA Hall of Fame

The LPGA’s Hall is different than the World Golf Hall of Fame, with the former being points — not votes — based.

Twenty-seven points are needed for entry. One point is given for each LPGA official tournament win and each Vare Trophy (lowest scoring average for a season) or Rolex Player of the Year award. Two points are awarded for each major victory and another point is given for an Olympic gold medal.

In addition to the necessary 27 points, players must have won or been awarded at least one of the following: an LPGA major, the Vare Trophy or Rolex POY honors.

Ko was sitting on 26 points, having won an LPGA event in January and having met all the other requirements. The triumph in Paris gave here the final push.

The LPGA Hall of Fame committee can also induct select individuals through the Honorary Category, which it did for entertainer and tournament host Dinah Shore in 1994 and eight of the LPGA’s 13 co-founders in 2022 (denoted below by *).

In 1999, when the LPGA reduced its threshold from 35 points to 27, it created a Veterans Category to allow for the possible induction of former players who would have qualified under the altered conditions (denoted below by **). The Veterans Category no longer exists.

Here’s a look at the 35 players currently in the LPGA Hall of Fame:

Epson Tour Update: 2024 Paris Olympics – Round 2

Medal misses provide perspective for nelly korda, celine boutier, morgane metraux and rose zhang.

lpga tour tv ratings

Day Two from Le Golf National saw Mariajo Uribe drop one spot on the leaderboard but is still only 1-shot off of a medal. The Colombian matched her first round with another 2-under 70 in round two.

On day two, Uribe had a cleaner scorecard, rolling in three birdies and making one bogey during her second 18 holes of play. The 34-year-old has previously found success at the international level, winning the gold medal at the 2015 Pan American Games and the silver medal in 2023. However, finding the podium in Paris would be one of the biggest highlights of the Colombian's career.

Diksha Dagar is 4-shots outside the podium, mostly due to not having a strong finish to close out her rounds over the first two days of play. On holes 17 and 18 over the first two days, Dagar has played the holes in 4-over par while she has played the other 16 holes bogey-free at 5-under.

Another strong day of play with a solid finish could put the Indian native right in contention to win a medal in Paris, in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive tournament. Her Indian teammate Aditi Ashok is also tied with her at 1-under for the tournament, adding to the excitement.

"Everything was going good. The course management was the problem," explained Dagar. "Like on the 18th hole, I hit into the water, and again, I went over into the bunker. I would say I played a very good round if you remove the 18th hole from yesterday and today."

Here's how all of the Epson Tour athletes finished after two days of play:

  • Mariajo Uribe (-4, T4)
  • Diksha Dagar (-1, T14)
  • Alena Sharp (+3, T29)
  • Dottie Ardina (+4, T36)
  • Ashley Lau (+5, T40)
  • Ana Belac (+5, T40)

2024 Olympics women's golf leaderboard: Lydia Ko claims gold medal, qualifies for LPGA Hall of Fame

Reigning gold medal winner nelly korda fell just short of reaching the podium on saturday.

lydia-ko-final-round-2024-olympics-g.jpg

Her collection is now complete. Besting the field at Le Golf National, Lydia Ko claimed a two-stroke victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics and grabbed her long-awaited gold medal. The New Zealander finished the competition at 10 under ahead of silver medalist Esther Henseleit of Germany at 8 under and bronze medalist Xiyu Lin of China at 7 under.

With her trip to the top of the podium, Ko now possesses a gold medal from this year's games, a silver medal from the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Entering the competition as the only golfer -- male or female -- to hold multiple Olympic medals, Ko is now the first to hold three.

Not only can Ko call herself the most decorated Olympic golfer in the history of the Summer Games, but she's also qualified for the LPGA Hall of Fame -- all of this at the ripe age of 27 years old. Arriving in Paris one point short of the 27-point threshold required for entrance, Ko's gold medal is enough to put her over the edge.

Her 27 points consist of 18 LPGA Tour victories (18 points), two major championships (4), two Vare Trophies (2), two LPGA Player of the Year honors (2) and an Olympic gold medal (1).

Beginning the day in a share of the lead with Switzerland's Morgane Metraux, Ko got off to an uneasy start making bogey on the opening hole. Despite the dropped shot, she walked off the second green with her name alone atop the leaderboard as Metraux's nerves were apparent early and often.

Ko found her stride soon after as birdies on the two par 5s on the front nine sandwiched another on the par-4 7th where she connected from outside 45 feet to put an unlikely circle on her scorecard. With her playing competitors Metraux and the United States' Rose Zhang both failing to break 40 on the front nine, Ko's advantage ballooned to as many as five.

A trio of pars to begin her back nine maintained her margin before adversity arrived on the par-4 13th. Hitting her approach into the water hazard protecting the putting surface, Ko yielded two strokes back and gave her counterparts hope that a crack in the door may be opening.

Henseleit marched towards the light and posted a total for Ko to ponder as she shortened the lead to as little as one. The German made birdie on her final two holes to sign for a final-round 66 and grab the clubhouse lead at 8 under. Lin had eyes on the same number, but a bogey on No. 17 made it so a closing birdie was instead for bronze.

Ko's quest for gold remained in her hands as she steadied the ship with a hefty diet of pars and stepped to the 18th tee still one in front. Finding the fairway and choosing to lay up, Ko faced a wedge shot over water to seal the deal. Finding the green under immense pressure, Ko needed just one putt to find gold and close out her Olmypic medal trifecta.

2024 Olympic medalists

Silver — Esther Henseleit (Germany): Standing at 1 over heading into the second half of the competition, Henseleit had a 36-hole run to remember. A third-round 69 gave her an outside chance at a medal before a fast start to her final round put her firmly in position. Turning in 4 under, the 25-year-old exchanged a birdie with a bogey early in her back nine before finishing in a flurry. A birdie on the difficult par-4 17th set the stage for an eagle opportunity on the closing par 5, which would have pulled her even with Ko. Leaving it low, Henseleit instead settled for silver and Germany's first Olympic medal in golf.

Bronze — Xiyu Lin (China): The only player to break par in every round, Lin's steadiness allowed her to grab the bronze medal. Entering the day at 4 under, Lin plodded her way around Le Golf National before an explosion of birdies to end. Throwing three circles on her scorecard in her final four holes, the 28-year-old clipped a cluster of competitors occupied at 6 under. It marks China's second bronze medal in the last three Olympics.

Notable finishers

Rose Zhang (United States): Zhang improved gradually with rounds of 72-70-67 to put herself in the final threesome on Saturday. She climbed within one stroke of the gold medal position early in the final round before the wheels started to come off. Playing her final six holes on the front nine in 4 over, she turned in 40 and was unable to recover from there. Despite falling short, Zhang's Olympic debut marks another impressive first for the 21-year-old.

Nelly Korda (United States):  The reigning gold medalist failed to break 70 this week as the big number hindered her chances to go back-to-back. Carding 19 birdies in her competition, Korda offset this total with 11 bogeys, a triple bogey and a quadruple bogey. The last of the two sevens came at the most inopportune time as she stood in the fairway on No. 15 at 5 under and with a chance to still lay claim to the final podium spot. Dunking her approach into the water, the American put seven on the scorecard before another bogey on No. 17 put the finishing touches on a back-nine 40.

Celine Boutier (France): An opening 65 put Boutier on the number which would have ultimately gotten her in a playoff for the bronze medal. Unfortunately, the Frenchwoman went around Le Golf National in 11 more strokes on Thursday to relinquish her lead. Unable to threaten the final day, Boutier can look at a stretch of holes on the back nine where her competition went awry. Playing Nos. 13-15 in 2 under in Round 1, Boutier played those same holes in an 11-over fashion the last three rounds.
