Everything you need to know before you go to London in 2024

Make the most of your trip to London with these expert tips © FilippoBacci / Getty Images
Even though I was born and raised in London, I’ve been caught out without a brolly (umbrella) in the rain countless times. I’ve felt the scorn of others when not noticing there’s a queue, and I’ve made the costly error of driving into the city. But as a local, I’ve made these mistakes so you don’t have to; I hope my experience and top tips help inspire a smooth and memorable trip to the UK capital.
1. Know your Tube etiquette
One easy way to annoy commuters is to not follow these very easy rules when traveling around on London’s Underground. Get your ticket, bank card or smart phone ready before you reach the ticket barriers so you don’t create a queue. Stand on the right when using escalators so passengers wanting to walk can pass. Let passengers off the train first (stand to either the right or left of the doors) before you board. Offer your seat to someone who may need it more, such as a pregnant person, an elderly person, someone who is disabled and so on. And definitely don't try to strike up conversations with the locals (if you want to blend in).
2. Skip the car
London ’s roads are small, its traffic is chaotic, and there’s hardly anywhere to park. Plus, you’ll be charged for driving your car in to the center of London – the congestion charge is £15 a day, while the separate ULEZ charge starts from £12.50 and only certain energy efficient or electric cars are exempt. The best way to get around is on public transport (although check on the TFL website or app for information on industrial action and weekend engineering works). Use the Tube, hop on a bus, or rent a bike or e-bike if in the center of the city; cycle maps, highlighting designated paths for bikes, can be downloaded online.
3. Bring layers (and a raincoat)
London’s weather is changeable – temperatures have been known to rise and fall by 20°C in a matter of days. Showers can happen any time of year so pack a brolly (umbrella) or raincoat in your day bag and wear layers that you can easily take off. In summer, always carry a bottle of water on the Tube (the deep tunnels were built before air-conditioning). And while the climate may be mercurial, don’t let bad weather put you off going about your day – simply switch to more indoor-based activities, there are hundreds of them to choose from.
4. Opt for comfort over fashion when it comes to shoes
Most people cover a lot of ground when exploring London, plus different terrains: grass in the many green spaces, long Tube escalators, slippery pavements and even cobblestones. Museums require leg work, as do bridges, boats and parks. Heels are pretty pointless in London, unless you are getting a door-to-door cab to a venue.
5. Make reservations for top restaurants
While there are plenty of terrific places to eat that welcome walk-ins (although be prepared to queue for the best joints), many of the best restaurants are booked up weeks in advance, especially new ones or those run by celebrity chefs. More restaurants have adopted booking policies and deposits since the pandemic, so if you’re looking for a unique dining experience, you will need to book ahead.
6. Do as the Londoners do and go to a supper club
Embed yourself in London life with a dinner party with locals; a supper club is a superb way to try home-cooked local food from London’s diverse community. These are locally run endeavors, taking place in people’s homes or taking over whole restaurants – try The Bridge Club serving British eats made with French cooking techniques in South London, Dinner Ladies putting on immersive food experiences, or Indian street food run out of local chef Dhruv Mittal’s flat.
7. Know how to order at a pub
There are unspoken rules when visiting a pub. One person – not a whole group – should go to the bar. Stand anywhere and wait your turn. If someone was waiting before you, it’s polite to signal for the bar staff to serve them first if they come over to you. When you go back to your table with the drinks, you just bought "a round". Now everyone at the table owes you a drink throughout the evening, each person has a turn at buying a round. Last orders are when the bell rings, and from this moment you have 20 minutes to finish your drink.
8. Go to a football game
Football rivalries run high in the city, with 17 football clubs, including seven Premier League teams and four Women’s Super League Teams. Giant temples to "The Beautiful Game" sit around London and are great places to feel the collective energy of the city, as locals congregate (come rain or shine) to watch their heroes on the field. You'll need to book tickets far in advance for Premier League Games, but women’s and lower league men’s games are usually easier to come by – and arguably far more fun to watch. Visit local team websites to book.
9. Be polite and embrace the art of queueing
Londoners (and British people alike) are big on manners, and not having any will get you into trouble. Say "please" and "thank you", and apologize if you bump into someone. Don’t stare at people on the Tube, and hold a door open for people behind you when you walk through one. Let people pass, and be sure to help people in need (people with buggies at the top of stairs, older people crossing the road etc). If there is a queue to the attraction you want to visit or a stall you want to buy from, join it – you’ll might not get into a confrontation if you skip the line, but you will be judged.
10. Make a plan, but don't go overboard
London is massive, so getting from one side to the other takes a couple of hours in a car (and that's if there is light traffic). Riding the Tube is quicker, but journey times can still be long if attractions are on either side of the city. Minimize travel times by exploring by neighborhood – do a day in Central London, another day in West London and so on. Plan on spending at least a few hours in the big museums and galleries, as there is so much to see. Take many breaks, grab lunch at a cafe or pub and pause to take in the views. It’s easy to get carried away with the energetic pace of London, but sights are more enjoyable if you adopt a more leisurely approach.
11. Don’t leave your stuff lying around
Don’t leave your bags unattended at public venues like stations, buses, theaters or museums, as this is likely to cause alarm and your bag may be removed – or stolen. Only take with you what you are able to carry for several hours. Luggage storage is generally rare in London, but hotels will likely store bags once you check out. Avoid carrying mobile phones in back pockets or where they can be easily swiped from your hand in the street. Never leave your phone or purse on a cafe table, opportunistic thieves will distract you and it will be gone before you realise what's happening.
12. It's an election year in London
The incumbent mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, will face an election race in May 2024 (he's been in the top job since 2016). This might not be particularly noteworthy for travelers, but it does mean there's greater incentive to make sure London is working well. Policing, housing and public transport are high on the agenda for all the candidates. Services have been expanded to support the rising number of "rough sleepers" in the city, with the visible issue of homelessness a concern for locals and visitors alike. Tube strikes, which brought the city to a standstill in 2023, have been averted but industrial action on national rail services in and out of the city continue. The city goes to the polls on Thursday 2 May, 2024.

A handy guide for first-time visitors to London
Throwback travel pictures seem to be the biggest trend among celebrities on social media. A few days ago Priyanka Chopra posted her Bahamas vacation pictures on Instagram. But with the lockdown restrictions getting eased out, Priyanka Chopra took time off to explore England, which is the largest as well as the most populated country in the UK. In fact, England is a great option for those who are travelling abroad for the first time. It’s a very updated country technologically too. London is also a great travel option. The underground subways of London are easy for travellers to navigate. There are a lot of options for travellers who arrive in London to explore- Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, London Eye, Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Parliament.
Travelling to London for the first time? We are here to help Travelling to a new country can also give you the jitters. Here we have put together an essential travel guide for those paying London a visit for the first time.
London is big. Plan your day based on areas: London is larger than it seems in Google maps and the map will give you a hint of the number of iconic places you can visit. That’s one thing London guarantees- never a dull moment! One of the best ways to make the most of your London travel is by grouping all the activities that are close to an area. If you want to visit Madame Tussauds wax museum you can club it with visits to Regent’s Park, Primrose Hill, and The Sherlock Holmes Museum as they are situated in the same area. Create your list on Google maps for better results as each time you save a place to your created list, a blue icon will appear. It’s super useful and visible. By planning your attractions based on areas, you’ll see more things and waste less time travelling from place to place.
Buckingham Palace tour for public: Here's how to book
Live like a Queen in this royal caravan in London
Tipping is not compulsory: Tipping is voluntary in most places in England. If you want to leave a tip for good service in a restaurant a 10% tip is generally the rule of thumb. Tipping isn’t as big a deal as it is in the United States or other countries but that doesn’t mean it isn’t appreciated. Usually, a small 10-15 per cent tip is more than fine for a restaurant whilst there is no need to tip at any bar or for drinks. There’s also no need to tip when hailing a cab, though it often makes sense to round up the amount to the nearest pound. It’s one of the interesting facts about London that might seem quite strange if you’re used to a culture of tipping.
Keep right on the escalators: While this may sound strange, it is an unwritten rule in London which suggests staying on the right side of the escalators to make way for people to pass. A city like London that is always bustling with life will always have people rushing to get ahead of time, and a small act of courtesy can go a long way in this city!
Pack for all weathers: Always carry an umbrella: London is best known for its erratic weather changes, where it can be sunny one minute and you can wind up feeling cold after an unpredictable shower! Pack your essentials wisely so that you have plenty of layers at hand to tackle any weather. Having an umbrella at all times is advisable.
Avoid travelling during rush hour: If you can avoid travelling during peak times (in London) or any major city it will not only save you money on fares but also possibly your sanity. If you have to travel when it is busy make sure you have an Oyster card.
Ride a bike around the city: You may come across several bikers on a typical day in London, as bikes are quite an inexpensive mode of transport in the city. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind losing their the way during their excursion, rent a bike which is easily available on bike-bays on the street using a debit/credit card.
Get an oyster card: Get yourself an oyster card that would help you on saving both times as well as money during your trip in the subway. The card, which works for both metro and underground, can be easily topped up at any station in the city! Having an Oyster card will also mean you will not have to wait it out in the long queues.
Experience an afternoon tea: Londoners take their afternoon tea very seriously. Which basically consists of small sandwiches, scones, cakes and, of course, tea. This tradition was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in 1840. She used to be hungry in the afternoon and she made it a routine. Then she started inviting friends around to have afternoon tea. This was adapted by Queen Victoria and then became nationally popular. Nowadays, afternoon tea isn’t a thing that the British do in their houses, but they go to cafes where afternoon tea is served on special occasions or meet friends.
Museums are free: A lot of them like the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, the British Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate Modern are all free. So you can actually spend a day exploring the many historical artifacts and the rich heritage.
7 must-visit places in London 1. Tower Bridge: The iconic Tower Bridge, which was completed in 1894, is one of the world’s most famous bascule (a French term for “see-saw”) bridges: It opens in the middle to allow tall boats on the Thames to pass through. Catch a glimpse of the bridge opening and walk across its high-level glass floor walkways 42 metres above the Thames!
2. Piccadilly Circus: This is considered as the city’s paltry attempt to impersonate Time’s Square. It’s always absurdly busy with bright billboards lining the edges of the buildings and you’ll probably find yourself here if you’re planning an evening in the West End or Soho! It’s worth marvelling at night and taking in the atmosphere that surrounds it.
3. Tower of London: Home to the Crown Jewels, the iconic beefeaters, and (allegedly) several spooks, the Tower of London’s history dates back nearly 1,000 years. Standing guard by Tower Bridge and the River Thames, the medieval compound has served as a royal palace, prison, and execution site. Legend has it, these royal ghosts haunt Britain to this day!
4. The Shard is almost 310 metres (1,016 feet) tall and is made from gleaming metal and lots of angled glass. Seemingly rising up from the River Thames, the iconic landmark was inspired by sleek spires. Completed in 2012, it’s not only the tallest building in the UK but is also one of the top five tallest buildings in Europe. It’s pretty impressive to see, even from afar, and we’d consider it a must-visit in London. Featured in movies and TV shows, the building is also celebrated for its environmentally friendly features like its onsite combined heat and power plant that creates electricity and hot water for the building. The Shard truly is among the best places to visit in London.
5. Buckingham Palace is one of London’s most iconic attractions. The official home of Queen Elizabeth II, the splendid palace is used for many royal functions. Guarded by a smartly dressed royal soldier, clad in black and red with the unmistakable bear-skin hats, the original parts of the palace were built in the early 1700s. An impressive building from the outside, the lavish interiors are equally as awe-inspiring. Of the palaces 770-plus rooms, the stunning staterooms are open to visitors in the summer months. The grand gardens are a riot of colour in the warmer months when the numerous flowers are in full bloom. We don’t really have to say that Buckingham Palace is one of the most famous places in London – it’s quite a no-brainer and definitely worth the visit!
6. Sherlock Holmes: Fans of Sherlock Holmes have already assumed why London’s so special. Make the pilgrimage to the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221b Baker Street (yes, it really exists!), or follow the path of the BBC’s latest version of the legendary detective with stops at St. Bart’s Hospital, Speedy’s Restaurant on North Gower Street, or Leinster Gardens. Holmes himself would have a hard time cracking these strange unsolved mysteries!
7. Harrods: It is one of the largest and most famous department stores in Europe. The Harrods motto is Omnia Omnibus Ubique, which is Latin for "all things for all people, everywhere". Several of its departments, including the Seasonal Christmas department and the Food Halls, are well known. They have been offering luxury goods to its customers for over 160 years. Across seven floors and 330 departments, shoppers will find only the best fashions, accessories, and homewares. Shopped out? Toast your purchases with some bubbly at the Champagne Bar, or a box of rainbow hued Ladurée macarons. Here are more of the world’s greatest department stores. It is said that the Queen went on secret trips to Harrods to buy goodies for the royal family as she does her own present shopping.

London’s spice trail: the sights, tastes, smells and sounds of India – in Wembley
In one of a series of new women-led tours, groups visit the shops, cafes, restaurants and magnificent Hindu temple on Wembley’s Ealing Road
S tatues of 41 deities in bright robes and garlands watch as we walk, silent and sock-footed, through endless intricate archways and air that smells of sandalwood and jasmine. A mirrored table under the elaborate central dome reflects rings of dancing figures. The Shri Sanatan Hindu temple, opened in 2010 on the Ealing Road, is a mesmerising slice of north India surrounded by grey London suburbs. The walls and more than 200 limestone pillars were hand-carved in Gujarat, featuring birds, animals and scenes from Hindu scripture.
Vaishali Patel, who lives four miles away in Harrow, has brought a group of us to the temple as part of a new tour that celebrates the vibrant colours, tastes and textiles of Wembley’s Indian community. She created this half-day experience after studying with The Tour Guiding Academy, a training programme run by social enterprise Women in Travel . It’s one of a growing number of women-led local tours in London.
In Wembley, our next stop is a paan kiosk in a launderette, to try these parcels of dried coconut and sugar-coated aniseed wrapped in betel leaves. The pavement outside is mottled with brick-red splashes where people have spat out their paan after chewing it. I spent nearly four years in Delhi – my youngest child was born there – and Ealing Road transports me straight back. This is a place that people living nearby take for granted: somewhere to worship and go shopping. For visitors or London residents who don’t know it, the area is a low-carbon portal to a parallel world.
“When I was a child, my mum and I would come here on the bus to buy fruit and veg,” says Vaishali, who mixes stories from her own experience with background information. Walking on, past greengrocers piled with chillies, papayas and fresh coriander, we reach the gleaming Ambala sweet shop, with its stacks of syrupy jalebis and creamy slabs of confectionery: cashew marzipan, green pistachio barfi and rich fig and carrot halwas.
At Joshi fabric shop, a few doors down, our sensory odyssey dives into a corridor of colour: there are silks, brocade and iridescent organza, crushed velvet, lace and glittery three-tone disco jersey. It could not be more of a contrast with the chilly drizzle outside. Rolls of gold and magenta, deep blue, chemical orange and earthy maroon line the narrow shop. Smaller shelves, beyond the prismatic satin and ombré chiffon, contain sequins, mirrorwork, embroidered ribbons and glinting diamante. “Mostly peacocks,” says the label on one box. We learn about pleating saris, bandhani tie-dying from western India, and the owner’s family history. Like many in the area, Bina Joshi’s parents and grandparents travelled by boat and plane from Gujarat via east Africa, fleeing droughts and then persecution.
Vaishali’s tour also takes in a garland-strung gift store full of miniature Ganesh fountains and the strains of sitar music, before ending with Indian street food and spicy masala chai at Sakoni’s restaurant. Here we eat crispy bhajiya , mixed chaat with tangy-sweet tamarind, a south Indian dosa pancake and mogo (cassava) chips, a reminder of the area’s east African connections.
In her book Solo Explorers , a collection of 30 accounts by women of transformational journeys, Vaishali writes about how travel helps us appreciate humanity and “disconnect from daily routines that often keep us trapped in what we know”. Her tour creates similar effects in just three hours on one suburban street. I feel as though I’ve been on holiday and come back with a richer view of London.
Tours run every Saturday at 10am and cost £65pp including street food, sweets and drink. womenintravelcic.com/shop

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It covers an area of 32, 87,263 sq. km, extending from the snow-covered Himalayan heights to the tropical rain forests of the south. As the 7th largest country in the world, India stands apart from the rest of Asia, marked off as it is by mountains and the sea, which give the country a distinct geographical entity.
Fringed by the Great Himalayas in the north, it stretches southwards and at the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. As you travel the expanse of the country, you are greeted by diverse nuances of cuisines, faiths, arts, crafts, music, nature, lands, tribes, history and adventure sports. India has a mesmeric conflation of the old and the new. As the bustling old bazaars rub shoulders with swanky shopping malls, and majestic monuments accompany luxurious heritage hotels, the quintessential traveller can get the best of both worlds. Head to the mountains, enjoy a beach retreat or cruise through the golden Thar, India has options galore for all.
