The 12 Best Dopp Kits For Travel

Best Dopp Kits 00 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Jun 15, 2023

It doesn’t take an expert jet-setter to know how inefficient and woefully misguided haphazardly tossing a loose assortment of toiletries into a larger suitcase is when traveling. Not only can grooming products hugely benefit from some basic storage and organization, but a separate carry solution also ensures that, should your toothpaste, beard oil, or shampoo open mid-trip, it won’t seep into the rest of your travel bag’s contents. For these reasons, dopp kits have increasingly become a bonafide travel staple, however, with so many different available models, it can be hard to even know where to begin when shopping. So, with this in mind, we’ve thoroughly scoured the space in order to highlight a handpicked array of the best dopp kits for travel.

A solid toiletry travel companion.

What Factors Should One Explore When Shopping For A Dopp Kit?

While on the surface, it may look like Dopp kits differ very little from model to model, however, the reality is that, there are actually a handful of finer points that should be taken into account when shopping for one. Below, we’ve broken down a few of the most crucial areas to think about before buying a new Dopp kit for travel.

Video Review: The 7 Best Dopp Kits

If you’re looking to go deeper on the subject matter, be sure to check out our best dopp kits video on YouTube.

Primary Construction: Just like with regular backpacks or duffel bags , the overall quality and durability of a Dopp kit will primarily boil down to the materials used to craft its shell, as well as the construction technique — or techniques — used to piece that material together. While some manufacturers opt for ultra-rugged ballistic-grade shells, the truth here is that a Dopp really doesn’t need to exhibit the same level of strength or durability as the larger travel bag or suitcase that it will be carried in — though it never hurts. While discussing shell materials, it’s also worth mentioning that some Dopps have been further fortified through the addition of PU or DWR coatings.

Secondary Materials: Alongside a Dopp’s shell construction, it’s also worth exploring the material used for the shell’s liner. Likewise, if a Dopp kit has internal pockets or dividers, it’s also worth looking into the materials used for these items as well.

Hardware: In addition to primary and liner constructions, another area that hugely distinguishes the more premium Dopps on the market from their more budget-friendly counterparts is the type of hardware being used. This includes elements such as a Dopp’s zipper tracks, along with any buckles, hardware, or additional attachment points it may have.

Size: While Dopp kits do tend to be fairly small — boasting just enough room to accommodate one’s grooming essentials – they can nonetheless vary in size and shape. What’s more, on top of offering Dopps in a variety of colors, some companies also sell the same Dopp kit in multiple sizes.

Waterproofing: While Dopp kits don’t need to be able to withstand a complete submerging, they should be weather/water-resistant enough to shield the rest of your travel bag’s contents from damage should a grooming product accidentally open or explode while in transit. On the flip side of the coin, this same ability typically affords Dopp kits the ability to also protect its contents from outside rain or moisture.

Integration: Though pretty much every Dopp kit on the market will fit into a regular backpack or piece of hard luggage , some have been designed specifically to be compatible with existing travel bags. Additionally, some Dopp kits feature elements such as MOLLE webbing that allow for easy attachment to all manner of other carry solutions.

Organization: A Dopp kit’s job isn’t merely to store all of your toiletries but also to provide organization — a task that’s typically accomplished through the use of a series of pockets, slips, dividers, and loops for accommodating grooming supplies and other small items and travel essentials.

Selection & Testing Process

How & Why We Got Hands-On With These Particular Dopp Kits

Best Dopp Kits Tested 01

The vast majority of the best Dopp kits on the market benefit from experience and knowhow their makers have obtained producing larger bags and carry solutions, so we began our search by first looking to some of our favorite backpack brands in order to get a sense of what was available. Once we’d reviewed this space, we started making our initial picks largely on the strength of each model’s size, materials, and features and amenities. From there, we began honing in on more specific details such as each dopp’s hardware and trim. Using these traits to guide our search, we then made our picks for the specific Dopp kits that we’d be testing.

Once getting each Dopp kit in hand, we began exploring in model in depth, examining every Dopp’s construction, build quality, and overall fit and finish. From there, we kicked off the actual field-testing portion of our process in an effort to discover how each Dopp kit performed in the real world, looking into factors such as how well-designed each model’s internal organizational amenities are, the level of waterproofing offered, if the Dopp includes an element that allows it to be hung or suspended. Long-term testing also lead us to uncover how easily each Dopp can be cleaned. Lastly, with access to a myriad of different Dopp kits during our testing process, we eventually began exploring how well these Dopps were able to lend themselves to other uses and applications — such as carrying tech essentials or pieces of EDC gear — as this shined a light on the level of versatility offered by each dopp (which also furthers said Dopps’ value and bang for your buck).

The 10 Very Best Men’s Dopp Kits

Compact enough to squeeze in a carry-on and durable enough to withstand years of travel..

Portrait of Katherine Gillespie

In this article

  • Best Dopp kit overall
  • Best extra-large and mini
  • Best stylish
  • Best waterproof
  • Best leather
  • Best flexible

A great Dopp kit will keep your grooming essentials organized once you reach your destination and prevent them from leaking in your bag while you’re in transit. It must be waterproof (or at least water-resistant ), have a wide opening that means you won’t have to rummage around, and have a handy loop or hook for easy storage in whatever bathrooms your trips take you to. To find the best Dopp kits that meet these criteria, I cross referenced recommendations we’ve received over the years from stylish men who are always on the go , from grooming experts to creative directors. Then I ordered samples to test those recommendations out for myself, placing products inside and playing around with how they’d fit into various compartments. Below, find well-organized pouches and bags for every kind of trip. While you’re here, I’ve also written about the best travel toiletry bottles and personal-item carry-on bags for flying .

What we’re looking for

Hanger type.

One thing all the best Dopp kits have is either a hook or handle so it can be hung up when you get to your destination. It gives you back some counter space and it ensures your stuff won’t be sitting in water all day. It means you can carry it around easily instead of having to “hold it like a football,” according to photographer Gray Malin . Ones with hooks, called hanging dopp kits, take it a step further and allow you to open up the bag while it’s hanging, which gives you a full view of all your products. “It unfolds like a mini garment bag and has a little hanger so you can keep your stuff out of the sink,” Nick Greene, author of How to Watch Basketball Like a Genius , describes his pick. “It makes you feel grown,” Greene summarizes, “without busting your bank.”

Surprisingly, few of the travelers we spoke to prioritized compartments within the Dopp kit as something they were looking for. While they are a bonus, “you don’t need a lot of zippers, pockets, and compartments,” Peter Hunsinger, the co-founder of sock brand Kane 11 , says. He prefers something easy to open that allows you to see everything. Our experts were above all concerned with the size of the kit. Most of the cases below have room for your skin-care routine and travel-size toiletries, but there are a few ten-liter Dopp kits that appear on our list, which are large enough to hold a compact blow-dryer or clippers. While the latter may take up more room for those who travel light, the size is ideal for those who can’t travel without taking a chunk of their bathroom. Every bag on this list is made from a fabric flexible enough to squish into an already stuffed suitcase or weekender, so the larger size shouldn’t be a problem.

Speaking of material, that seems to be the most important thing to consider when buying a Dopp kit. Something durable, easy to clean, and water resistant is what you want to look for. You’ll find that many are made from nylon, which is wipeable in case of spills. It won’t be ruined by sitting on a wet countertop. Leather, silicone, and canvas have these qualities as well, the latter of which is another popular option among our experts. The thick material is durable and affordable, and it can look more distinguished than other common Dopp kit materials. Like the other fabrics, they can be wiped or spot-cleaned. The material on the inside is just as important. It should be easy to clean and waterproof or resistant as well. For that, nylon or canvas is the way to go.

The last thing to consider is how easy it is to get to your products, which is easiest with a Dopp kit that unzips all the way around to lie flat. This is guaranteed with hanging bags, while with others it’s a toss-up. Each of the options below either unzips fully or has a wide mouth.

Best toiletry bag overall

Aer Travel Kit

Hanger type: Hook | Size: 2.5 L | Material: Nylon | Access: Wide opening

For just under $50, here’s a hanging toiletry bag with multiple compartments that’s literally constructed from ballistic nylon , a material that was originally developed to protect soldiers from shrapnel. So I think you can reasonably expect it to arrive at LAX unscathed. We first heard about the Aer travel kit from Barron Cuadro, the founding editor of Effortless Gent , who says that the nylon is not only “crazy durable” but also very easy to clean. It’s also water-resistant on both the interior and exterior, and when you open it up, you’ll find it unzips fully so you can see everything inside. It has a hidden hook for hanging and while compact when zipped up, still manages to fit all your necessities. On the outside, there are front and back pockets as well as an exterior toothbrush holder. Inside, there are two zippered pockets and elastic organizers for your toiletry bottles. I also like that it has YKK zippers and an antimicrobial coating on the liner.

Best (less expensive) hanging toiletry bag

Muji Hanging Case

Hanger type: Hook | Size: | Material: Polyester | Access: Wide opening

For less than half the price of the Aer bag, you can get this one by Muji. Compared to the Aer, it’s significantly smaller and made from a cheaper material, polyester. But it doesn’t feel flimsy, and when I placed travel-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner inside (Muji’s own reusable toiletry bottles are obviously very compatible, but others work too), they were well-secured. A toothbrush fits easily, but you’ll have to place it horizontally. While the fabric might not be as nice as ballistic nylon, it’s still very resilient and quick-drying. And honestly, I find that larger Dopp kits can sometimes just encourage overpacking of bulky tools and products. This Muji case is the bag Greene said made him feel “grown,” with its garment-bag-style hanging option. Inside, there are two zippered pockets and four elastic holders for bottles or grooming tools. Then there’s another zippered pocket on the front of the bag, plus another slip pocket on the back.

Best extra-large toiletry bag

Patagonia Black Hole Cube

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 10L | Material: Polyester ripstop | Access: Wide opening

Sometimes you have to think outside the box to find the best solution to your problem. Bags that aren’t technically Dopp kits, such as this Patagonia packing cube , might actually be the best thing for storing your toiletries. Like the rest of the brand’s products, it’s built for the outdoors. Matt Kays, a senior vice-president at PR Consulting, relies on this Patagonia number for its ripstop, practically indestructible exterior. He actually has two: He uses one as a Dopp kit for travel and the other as a wet bag to hold his things when he goes to the beach, so you know the water resistance is serious. This packing cube doesn’t have many compartments, which Hunsinger actually appreciates. It unzips to lie flat and opens like a hard-shell suitcase: Both sides are separated by a mesh zippered partition. One side alone can hold a pair of shoes, so you’d easily be able to stuff all your grooming products as well as clippers or a travel blow-dryer in here if you needed to. This bag has both a top handle and a daisy chain for clipping it to something else or hanging it from a hook.

Best (less expensive) extra-large toiletry bag

Topo Designs 10L Cube Pack Bag, Olive

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 10 L | Material: Nylon | Access: Wide opening

This is another packing cube turned Dopp kit. But here, you get the same-size bag for half the cost. Topo Designs makes a specific, triangular-shaped toiletry bag, but barber Mark Miguez, of New York City’s Friend of a Barber , prefers its ten-liter packing cube because it lies flat, adding that he has used “so many Dopp kits for work” and that this is the one he has been happiest with. It’s cheaper than the Topo Designs Dopp kit. It’s made from  400D nylon , which has great abrasion resistance, water resistance, and tear strength. It has a U-shaped opening, so it lies flat, and you can easily toss in and retrieve your products. It has a nice loop handle, which makes it easy to hang in places without counter-height surfaces. There are no compartments inside, so you’ll want to make sure your toiletry caps are screwed on tight and not breakable, as there’s nothing to hold them in place.

Best mini toiletry bag

Mini Kenyatta Want Les Essentials Bag

Hanger type: Two carry loops | Size: 4 L | Material: Organic cotton and nylon | Access: Double zip opening

Photographer Johnathon Daniel Pryce ( @garconjon ) travels for weeks at a time, so he needs a toiletry kit that fit his essentials without being bulky. “I’ve owned this style for about six years now,” he says. “It’s gone around the world with me and it still looks brand new.” With a double zip, there’s easy access to your toiletries, and a removable nylon liner makes wiping clean any spills fuss-free. It’s also pleasing to look at, says Pryce, who also regularly takes the bag to both the beach and the gym.

Best waterproof toiletry bag

Tooletries Koby Bag

Hanger type: No carry loop | Size: 5.9 L | Material: Silicone | Access: Average opening

Tooletries makes waterproof silicone accessories that suction to your shower wall, making your grooming tools accessible and the whole experience more streamlined. It has thought of everything from a soap holder to a beer holder to a shower mirror and has brought its technology outside the shower with this silicone Dopp kit. Its waterproof, leather-looking, antibacterial silicone is what Kyle Bergman, former senior merchant at Birchbox and founder of Swoveralls, loves most about the bag, saying it’s “leakproof and essentially stain-resistant,” as well as “very easy to clean.” It doesn’t have as much of a handle as some others, but based on the product images, the loop seems to have been designed to be big enough to fit a finger through, though using it with a carabiner to hook on to another bag might be more comfortable. It’s a medium-size bag compared to the other Dopp kits on this list, but Bergman was still impressed with the size: “It’s like an old-school Chevy Suburban inside with the amount of room it has for various products.” He didn’t mention the zipper or how easy it was to access products, but the opening is visibly smaller than others on this list. You’ll still be able to access your toiletries, but you might not be able to see them all at once.

Best toiletry bag with a waterproof compartment

Herschel Chapter Dopp Kit

Hanger type: Extra large carry loop | Size: 5 L | Material: Nylon canvas | Access: Wide opening

Dylan Raasch , senior design director at Nike , always travels for work with this toiletry bag from Herschel. “I’ve been on dozens of trips with it and it looks as new as the day I bought it. It’s easy to clean and seems to fit everything I need without having to dig around.” It doubles as a travel and storage item, where Raasch keeps his things organized so his partner can take up shelf space with her toiletries. The bag is also a favorite of Strategist editor Maxine Builder. She says it has just the right amount of pockets — enough that everything has a space, but not so many that she forgets where she’s put something. She’s also a fan of the oversize hook, which has “proved to be really useful when I’m digging through a duffel bag .”

Best leather toiletry bag

Dopp Admiral Travel Kit

Hanger type: Carry Loop | Size: 3.6 L | Material: Leather | Access: Wide opening

For a classic option, here’s the original Dopp model that gave these kits their name. Investment banker Tsz Hin Kwok says he has used his leather Dopp kit “pretty much daily” for the past few years because it’s longer than most other kits (but still portable). We reached out to Dopp, who told us that Kwok’s exact model is no longer in production, but pointed us towards this remarkably similar option. Like Kwok’s, the kit is also made from leather, which means it’s built to last and luxurious. At a length of 10.25, it’s great for oblong items like a hairbrush, or full-size tubes of toothpaste or hair gel if you’re checking a bag. The kit also has a flat bottom and a wide mouth like a vintage doctor’s bag, as well as a convenient carry loop.

Best luxury-leather toiletry bag

Leatherology Double-Zip Toiletry Bag — Cognac

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 5.5 L | Material: Leather | Access: Wide opening

Given your Dopp kit will inevitably become smeared with toothpaste, it feels slightly wrong to recommend purchasing anything too extravagant. But if you are prepared to make more of an investment, this leather kit is a worthwhile splurge. It’s good-looking but not too precious to get dirty. The outside wipes clean anyway, and the inside lining is water resistant in case of leaks or spills. These double zippered pockets are equal in size, adding to the “structural” design that made Gray attracted to it. (And it looks a lot like the $1,790 Tom Ford bag the Points Guy recommended to us but comes at a fraction of the cost. ) It’s perfect for overpackers, traveling with a partner, or just separating your a.m. and p.m. routines. As Gray says, “It just fits everything.” It has the extra-special touch of being customizable: You can choose between signature and premium leather, and if you purchase it from Leatherology, there is an option to monogram it for an additional $10 to $15. Malin went with a rose-gold monogram, but you can pick from 22-karat gold, silver, or other options.

Best flexible toiletry bag

Topo Designs Men's Travel Kit

Hanger type: Carry loop | Size: 3 L | Material: Coated nylon | Access: Wide opening

Thomas Pardee , brand director at Lupine Creative, likes this flexible toiletry bag that’s easy to squish into tight spaces in his suitcase. That’s not to say the bag is small. “The triangular shape is deceptively roomy,” Pardee says. It sits upright on any surface without tipping over, but in case of spills, its coated-nylon fabric is water resistant and easy to wipe clean. The kit also has a heavy-duty zipper with handy grab tabs to pull on, as well as a sturdy strap to loop over a hook.

At the time of this review, I've reviewed several of Aer's products. Most of them have taken over as my everyday carry and everyday backpack.

Even before diving into the product, I'm pretty convinced that it would be a great product, given their track record. I've known Aer for its great choice of materials, excellent craftsmanship, and probably the most important of all to me, style. Despite being made for the travel community, where many prioritize function over form, Aer has kept a high design standard.

While this product is called a “travel kit,” and they offer a Dopp Kit as a separate item, I've been mainly using this as a dopp kit. This is largely due to the availability of a hook inside it, making it perfect for hostel showers.

aer travel kit vs dopp

Aer is easily my favorite bag brand when it comes to aesthetics. Unlike some of the edgier bags like the 1733 Sidepack or CODEOFBELL X-PAK , Aer is more reserved with its design. This is arguably harder to do.

Aer doesn't add bells and whistles to make their products stand out but instead excels in design consistency and getting the details right. This is apparent in this Aer Travel Kit.

While I review exclusively black products, many of these black products are not as obsessive with consistency as Aer. They often have small parts that are not black, like on the clips or zippers. Aer has taken the extra step to keep every part of the travel kit black, except for the brand tag.

Aer has proudly included its brand tag in all its products. While I prefer brands like Outlier or Veilance, which has embraced a no external branding approach, I don't mind Aer's beautifully-kerned Helvetica logo as much.

aer travel kit vs dopp

There is also a subtle, debossed logo on each of the zipper pulls.

aer travel kit vs dopp

Ballistic nylon , the main fabric used, has larger weaves which contrasted beautifully with the slight sheen of the zipper in the front. There is also a zippered compartment on the back, but the zip here is hidden, unlike the front.

Speaking of zippers, it looks like only the front zipper is likely AquaGuard. I assume it's because the zipper to the main compartment can hardly be seen, and the zipper on the back is hidden. Still, the AquaGuard zipper definitely looks more premium and better in contrast with the ballistic nylon .

This used to be an ad.

But no one likes ads, so I got rid of them. If my articles helped you, I ask for your support so I can continue to provide unbiased reviews and recommendations. Every cent donated through Patreon will go into improving the quality of this site.

or buy me coffee

aer travel kit vs dopp

If I could nitpick, I found that the zipper pulls attract attention since they are long relative to the size of the kit. Since they are removable, so it's really a nonissue.

The travel kit uses 1680D ballistic nylon produced by Cordura, which is more well-known for its own Cordura fabric. There isn't going to be much tangible difference between run-of-the-mill ballistic nylon and Cordura-made ballistic nylon .

Ballistic nylon is something that I've quite a bit of experience with, and the bottom line is that it'll outlast pretty much anything you throw at it. Especially for this product which will likely be kept inside a bag, you'll unlikely ever wear it out.

The zippers are using industry-standard YKK. I know some bags still uses non-YKK zippers, but really, YKK is the way to go. They have pretty much a monopoly in the market, and for a good reason. I've never had a YKK zipper break on me, ever.

The hook is made of plastic. It felt very regular if a little cheap. If the hook snaps off, it'll be pretty much a deal-breaker for me. I'll be monitoring the quality of the hook on trips to come.

Organization

There are quick-access zippered compartments on the front and the back, with the back compartment slightly larger than the front. The opening of the front quick-access compartment faces to the front, while the opening of the back quick access compartment faces up.

This is also probably why the only front quick-access compartment uses the better AquaGuard zipper.

aer travel kit vs dopp

You can open the main compartment clamshell-style, and on the flap side, there's a zippered mesh slot. I use my mobile charger during the day so that I can have my phone next to me all the time, so I have my NOMAD Powerpack in here most of the time.

I designed a thing.

I found a 100 year old company that would create these heirloom quality canisters for me. They are handmade and will keep your tea leaves, coffee beans or anything that you need dry for years to come.

Behind the mesh slot, there is a hidden hook that can be pulled out from the top.

aer travel kit vs dopp

Unlike most hooks in travel kits that allow you to swivel 360 degrees, this one doesn't have the mechanism to do so and is just a plastic chain link.

On the “3D” side, it's half covered in the front. Inside the compartment, there are four loops to keep your accessories or toiletries upright.

aer travel kit vs dopp

As part of the front half-cover, there is a zippered slot, and in front are two loops made for your toothbrush. There is a slot on one end so that you can keep it in place.

aer travel kit vs dopp

I almost missed this one, but there is a slot on the left exterior of the travel kit. It's pretty tight, but I was able to fit my torchlight into it.

aer travel kit vs dopp

Since the pandemic has put a dampener on my travel urges, I've been using the travel kit at home. I use it as a kind of a little pack with everything I need. I have stuff like my hand cream, lip balm, hand sanitizer, NOMAD Powerpack , Nitecore Mini SS, and Apple Airpods . The idea was that it would contain most of the things that I often reach for during my day instead of having them all over my table.

I thought that the toothbrush organization didn't account for the travel toothbrushes since most of them are foldable and are too short to use the front organization.

This is a nitpick, but given that the hook uses a kind of “chain link” to attach the hook, the travel kit will slightly slouch to one side when hung. It also tugs quite a bit on the fabric it's attached to, making it look less clean than it could be. It doesn't really affect the functionality but might matter to the obsessive-compulsive.

aer travel kit vs dopp

Another thing is that you want to make sure not to get any cream or lotion on the mesh. I made the mistake of squeezing too much hand cream onto the mesh, and it was hard to get clean because of how abrasive the fabric is.

aer travel kit vs dopp

I thought this travel kit was well-designed, and the organization was well-thought-out and pretty much up to standard to Aer's product lineup. I'll definitely be bringing it on my future trips.

Don't Miss

The aer travel dopp kit. reinventing a classic.

AER has created a travel dopp kit that is tough as nails, looks great, and keeps toiletries organized without using up valuable sink space.

aer travel kit vs dopp

We are big fans of this small San Francisco design company. We had a look at their City Sling Bag a couple of months ago, and this month we have been using their equally well-designed dopp kit .

Similar to the Travel Sling, it is made of tough-as-nails ballistic nylon. The design touches are clearly from the mind of someone who has spent a lot of time traveling with a dopp kit in hotel rooms. First off, there is a big hook on top inside of the bag. This means you don’t have to take up space on a tiny hotel sink to set your bag. You can hang it from a towel bar or a hook and have full access to the contents without them spilling out. Genius.

aer travel kit vs dopp

Next, because it opens like a suitcase, folding open along the long edge rather than a zipper from the top, it tends to stay much more organized. It has the same volume as my Tumi dopp kit, but it stays in much better shape without all the bits and bobs floating around in the bottom of the dopp.

There are ample pockets on the front and back of the exterior, mesh pocket on the inside for a wet toothbrush, and a carry handle on top. As someone who, pre-COVID, was a regular user of hotels and long-haul flights, this is a wonderfully tidy and modern reinvention of the classic dopp.

Congratulations to AER on another great product. Thoughtful design, high-quality materials and workmanship, great customer service.

What Dopp Kit Should You Choose? | Buyers Guide

Whether you’re camping off the beaten path, putting your feet up in a plush hotel, kicking back in a cabin, or hopping from hostel to hostel, you need somewhere to store your toiletries so you can stay fresh and groomed wherever your travels take you. A Dopp kit is your trusty travel companion wherever your next trip leads, taking its name from Charles Doppelt. The German leather craftsman and US immigrant created a leather toiletry case in the 20th century, later securing a contract with the US military to supply these cases during WWII. Fast-forward to today and there are many different styles and sizes available to suit different needs. However, a few key considerations can help you narrow down your choices for a kit that’s just right for you.

Material Choices

Dopp kits come in a wide variety of materials that will suit different needs and aesthetic preferences. Those seeking timeless, classic style might opt for leather or waxed canvas, while others may prefer lightweight materials that suit pared-back or ultralight carry setups. While a Dopp kit won’t require the same level of durability as a travel bag, you should still consider tough materials, secure closures, and long-lasting construction for a piece of kit that will likely venture near and far for many years to come.

Also bear in mind how easy your Dopp kit will be to clean in the event of accidental spills or leakages. Water-resistant zippers and a water-resistant lining that’s easy to wipe will make travel life much easier, while also helping protect the rest of the contents in your travel bag by preventing liquids from seeping out.

Matador FlatPak Waterproof Toiletry Case and KILLSPENCER Dopp Folio 2.0

Sized for Your Setup

Often packing space is precious in a travel bag, so there’s no need to add unnecessary bulk with a toiletry kit that’s larger than you need. That being said, you should choose one that adequately accommodates all your grooming supplies in one easily transportable kit. Whether you roam with a lot of toiletries or make do with a minimalist setup, a diverse range of Dopp kit sizes are available to suit larger and smaller setups alike.

Organization and Access

While smaller toiletry loads require less organization, you should still consider a kit with useful pockets and easy access when dealing with multiple items. From elastic loops to mesh or zippered pockets and multiple compartments, Dopp kits can offer a wide variety of organization options to suit different setups and preferences.

Consider how easily the design allows access to your gear as well. A lay-flat or wide-opening design can make it a lot easier to access individual items.

Gravel Explorer PLUS Toiletry Bag

Travel-Friendly Features

A few handy travel-friendly features can make a big difference in your Dopp kit. For instance, a design with a hanging hook can come in handy when you’re dealing with compact spaces that don’t offer much room to lay a kit out. Translucent materials can help you quickly identify the contents in a kit, while other features might include the option to easily secure the kit to a larger bag or a multifunctional design that can double as a small EDC bag or tech pouch. Decide how you want to use your Dopp kit and what features will help you get the most out of it.

It’s been almost two years of setbacks and there are still fights ahead of us, but we can all agree that travel is high on our list of things to do when things somehow get back to normal. And while most of us aren’t taking to the roads and the skies just yet, it can’t hurt to prepare with some awesome new travel essentials. Their latest products to join their X-Pac stable are the latest versions of their Travel Sling and Dopp Kit , giving everyone the option to add the high-performance material to their travel ensemble.

aer travel kit vs dopp

If you’re unfamiliar with X-Pac, it’s a a highly durable and waterproof layered laminate material designed to withstand the harshest conditions built by Dimension-Polyant, a company that builds racing sailcloths by trade and figured they’d make an excellent product fabric as well. It’s made an appearance on a number of Aer bags over the years, but now the company is aiming to make it as accessible as possible to regular consumers as a premium option for all their bags moving forward—no limited edition drops, raffles, or extra hoops to jump through to be able to own your favorite model in X-Pac.

aer travel kit vs dopp

The latest duo to get the X-Pac treatment are the Travel Sling 2 and Dopp Kit 2. The Travel Sling 2 is sized right for the times when you aren't trying to one-bag it abroad. It has 12 liters of capacity for your essentials, and comes with a well-considered design that helps you use that space wisely. It starts with the padded laptop sleeve with a soft lining that cushions up to a 16" laptop or tablet computer.

The main compartment also features lots of internal organization spaces including mesh and zip pockets that allow you to keep smaller gear, accessories, and tech items from flopping around the bag as you move from place to place. And for your quick access needs, there's a small dedicated pocket on the exterior of the bag that can keep your travel documents, payment cards, and other critical items ready within reach at a moment's notice.

The Dopp Kit 2 is Aer’s take on the classic travel accessory, with 2.6L of space across two compartments to store your hygiene essentials. One compartment has slots for your toothbrush and other lengthwise implements paired with a stretchy mesh pocket, while the other has elastic webbing to hold your liquids and other preparations. Rounding out the Kit is an external zip pocket for quick access, a vertical slot for holding your toothbrush upright, and a handy grab-and-go handle for toting the Dopp Kit as a whole.

Wherever your travels take you, both packs are built to last thanks to the use of robust X-Pac and Aer’s usual quality combination of hi-vis interiors, YKK zippers, and Duraflex hardware for a comprehensive and robust construction inside and out. Check them out at the links below.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

  • We like the ability to hold a toothbrush outside of the Dopp Kit on the bathroom counter
  • Great organization options with pockets & elastic bands

As mentioned in our initial usage thoughts above, we’re really digging the organization in this dopp kit. There’s a place for items of all different sizes. Zippered compartments for the smaller items you don’t want to misplace, plus, space for the medium and larger items too. This dopp kit is also divided into two main compartments. One for slimmer items and one for larger items. The slimmer main compartment opens up more than the other compartment, giving you easy access to the items on the inside.

During testing, we found that when using this on shorter trips, or when we traveled with minimal toiletries, the dopp kit was pretty empty and it took up a lot of space in our pack. There is a lot of room inside for toiletries, which is something to keep in mind if your toiletry kit is pretty minimal.

There’s also some slight padding on both sides of this dopp kit which should give the items inside some extra protection, but also adds a little more bulk.

A combination of mesh internal pockets and a gray lining helps increase visibility.

The elastic loops work well if you want to organize your items inside, but they don’t get in the way when not in use. This is super handy if you have larger items you want to carry.

Aer Dopp Kit 3 | The Dopp Kit trilogy is complete. Unlike the Aer Dopp Kit 2, the Dopp Kit 3 has a more simplified design that ditches extra features like the front compartment and toothbrush holster. This is arguably harder to do. Aer doesn't add bells and whistles to make their products stand out but instead excels in design consistency and getting the details right.
