  • Restart your phone if that doesn’t work.

Hi basilbrush12,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities! It looks like you have a question about some icons in Safari, and we'd like to get an understanding of the issue to see how we can help out.

For clarification, which icons are you referring to? Are you missing your bookmarks, favorites, or something else?

If you Restart your iPhone and check again, does this help? Also, which iOS version are you using under Settings > General > About?

If restarting doesn't clear up the issue, let us know the details and your current iOS version. Kind regards.

Thanks for replying. Are the bookmarks missing, or just the icons? Do you see your list of bookmarks but they appear with a generic letter icon?

Did you try restarting your iPhone to see if that helps?

If you've been using iCloud with Safari, you might also want to tap Settings > [name] > iCloud and make sure that feature is turned on.

Hello basilbrush12,

Were you able to restart your iPhone yet? If not, give that a try and let us know the results. We also recommend checking Settings > [name] > iCloud; if you've used Safari before to sync content like bookmarks and history, you might be able to resolve this by turning that setting back on.

Have a good one.

Method 1: Clear Safari favorites icons cache

Clearing the Safari favorites icons cache and starting over is the universal way of solving the problem of incorrect and missing favicons on your computer. Follow the steps below to get your favorite icons back.

  • Shut or quit Safari.
  • Go to Finder on your Mac.
  • Next, click on Go, then select Go To Folder on the visible menu.
  • A pop-up menu will appear, and you will need to type in/Library/Safari/Favicon Cache/
  • Once you’ve typed that in, you need to click on Go.
  • You must send all the items in the folder on your screen to Trash. Pressing the Command and the A key simultaneously selects all the files in the folder, then you can drag them to the trash. You can also right-click the files and select Move To Trash on the menu that appears on the screen.
  • Empty the entire trash or delete the items from the favicon cache folder only. The simplest way to empty your trash is by right-clicking the trash icon on your dock and selecting Empty Trash.
  • Open your Safari browser again and visit your saved sites.

The incorrect or distorted images should appear correctly. The favicon cache rebuilds itself as you visit your saved sites. However, in rare cases, some alternatives might help. I’ll now look at some of the methods that you can use. Feel free to try them all, as none take a long time to complete.

There is no guarantee that this alternative method will work, but it is worth a try if clearing the favicon cache is not working or if you prefer not to use it. Safari has a private window that does not store browsing history, and you can use this feature to try and refresh your favicons.

  • Right-click on Safari in the Dock
  • Select New Private Window
  • Visit the site with the incorrect or missing favicons
  • Close Private Window

The favicons should return to normal working conditions after this. You can try these further steps in the Private Window.

  • Select Preferences and click on Privacy on the Safari menu
  • Click on Manage Website Data, and a list of sites will appear
  • Choose the site that is causing issues and click on Remove
  • Click on Done to finish the process
  • Go back to the non-private window and open the website again.

Your Mac should be able to rebuild the favicon cache on its own. If you know your way around the device, you can manually make another favicon cache folder, but this is not a recommended route. It is better to contact the Apple Support center.

If you continue having issues with favicons, create a new user on your Mac. This method has worked for others on the Apple Community Forum , where users try to help each other solve various challenges with Mac. One user managed to retrieve all the missing favicons using this method.

  • Select System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) on your menu and click Users & Groups
  • Click on Add at the bottom of the dialogue box.
  • Choose the type of user, preferably the Administrator.
  • Enter the name of the new user and a password.
  • Click on Add User.

The first time you open Safari under the new user profile, favicons should all work perfectly. \

The Mac has a preference setting that allows tabs to display icons when you’re on Safari. Check that your preferences are set correctly by following these simple steps.

  • Open Safari
  • Click on Safari in the menu bar
  • Select Preferences
  • Click on Tabs, and a list of preferences will show up
  • Tick the box allowing website icons to be shown.

The image below shows the box that you should tick. You can try doing this a couple of times while restarting your device. Try this method several times, restarting your device each time.

If you use Time Machine to backup files, then you can use it to retrieve files and items. The good thing about Time Machine is that it works with almost all Mac apps. Here is a reminder of how to open Time Machine and retrieve files and items.

  • Click on the Time Machine icon. If the icon is not there, go to System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) and click Time Machine on the Apple menu.
  • Click on Show Time Machine in the menu bar to browse backups and local snapshots.
  • Use the arrows to look through your missing files and items. When you see the files you need, click Restore.

You can restore all the files at once or one by one. When restored, the files return to the original folder. Remember, you need to have already set your device to back up to the Time Machine for this method to work perfectly.

Your Safari favorites icons missing challenge can also be solved by updating your device. The macOS Catalina 10.15.7 Combo update fixes issues that prevent files from syncing with iCloud and resolves graphics. You can download this update and see if the problem is solved.

Follow these steps to download software updates on your Mac.

  • Open the Apple menu and choose System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above).
  • Click on Software Update.
  • Open the Software Update preferences for the Safari folder.

You can also find a list of available updates in the Apple Store or set your device to check for software updates in the System Preferences (System Settings on macOS Ventura and above) automatically. However, for this particular issue of missing favicons, the Catalina 10.15.7 Combo update should be able to help.

Method 7: Use the safe mode

One way of solving issues on your Mac is to restart it in safe mode. The safe mode allows your device to start and run with limited functionality as you try and solve specific issues. You must determine if your device uses Apple silicon, then follow these steps.

  • Shut down your Mac device.
  • Turn on your Mac and hold the power tab until the startup options window appears.
  • Choose the startup disk.
  • Click the Continue in Safe Mode tab while holding down the shift key.
  • Log in, and if asked to, do it again.

If your device uses the Intel processor, follow the instructions below.

  • Turn on the Mac
  • Press and hold the shift key immediately
  • Release the shift key when the login window appears
  • Login as per instruction

All the methods mentioned here should help retrieve missing or distorted favicons. If you continue having issues after everything I have touched on here, you may need to reinstall your macOS to ensure that all the third-party apps are up to date.

Always keep your Mac device updated, as this helps solve issues before they arise. Clearing your favicon cache is the simplest and fastest way of retrieving your missing favicon. If it does not work, you should get joy from the other methods mentioned above. As a last resort, reinstall the operating system. None of your data is removed by reinstalling macOS. Click on the Reinstall macOS tab in the Utilities window and follow the instructions to complete the process.

Do not close the lid on your Mac until the reinstallation process is finished. Your device will load all the latest software updates and be as good as new. Besides everything I have covered here, you can also contact Apple support and get help.

Favicons provide a convenient way of quickly identifying websites on tabs, bookmark lists, and browser history. For those using the internet for work, favicons save valuable time and energy since you do not have to type the first few letters of sites to get where you want to be.

Solution 4. Ensure the Date & Time Is Correct

In some cases, the incorrect date and time can lead to unexpected system errors like iPad bookmarks gone. At this moment, you need to check whether the date and time show correctly on your device.

  • Go to the device's Settings > General > Date & Time .
  • Switch on the Set Automatically option.

If the option is already on, turn it off. A few seconds later, please turn it on again.

Solution 5. Check iCloud Settings

  • Navigate to Settings > tap your name > choose iCloud .
  • If Safari is on, toggle it off and then on in a few minutes.

Afterward, tap the Delete from My iPhone option if your data has synced to one or more computers. Or, select the Keep on My iPhone option.

Solution 6. Check the Internet Connection

A strong internet connection makes iCloud syncing more smoothly. Otherwise, the Safari bookmarks may disappear. Thus, you can open a browser on your iPhone and visit a reliable website to see if the network speed is stable. If not, it's necessary to reload the Safari data or restart your iPhone.

Solution 7. Ensure the Same Apple ID

You should also ensure that the Apple ID you are using on your iPhone is the same one you back up your Safari data. Head over to Settings > tap your name > check if the Apple ID is the same.

What to Know

  • View and manage your bookmarks: Tap the open book icon to view, edit, and delete your Safari bookmarks.
  • Sync bookmarks across devices: Go to Settings > your name > iCloud , then turn on the Safari toggle and tap Merge .

This article explains how to manage bookmarks on an iPhone. Instructions apply to Safari , the default web browser for iOS .

How to Add a Bookmark in Safari on an iPhone

Adding a website bookmark in Safari on your iPhone is simple. Follow these steps:

Go to the web page you want to bookmark and tap the action box (the icon that looks like a box with an arrow coming out of it).

In the pop-up menu, tap  Add   Bookmark .

This menu also contains useful features such as printing and searching for text on the page .

Edit the details about the bookmark, such as its name and location.

When you're done, tap  Save . Your bookmark is saved.

To use your bookmarks, tap the icon at the bottom of the Safari screen that looks like an open book. This reveals your bookmarks. Navigate through your bookmark folders to find the site you want to visit. Tap the bookmark to go to that site.

How to Sync Bookmarks Across Devices Using iCloud

When you turn on Safari syncing using  iCloud , you can share bookmarks across your Apple devices. This way, bookmarking a site in Safari on one device automatically bookmarks it in Safari for all your devices. Here's how to set it up:

On your iPhone, tap  Settings

Tap your name at the top of the screen and then tap iCloud .

Move the  Safari  slider to on (green).

Tap Merge . You've synced your iPhone bookmarks to iCloud and your other compatible devices with the same setting.

Repeat these steps on your iPad and Mac (and PC, if you use the iCloud Control Panel) to keep everything in sync.

How to Sync Passwords With iCloud Keychain

It's also possible to sync saved usernames and passwords that you use to access your online accounts. When you sync passwords using the iCloud Keychain, any username and password combinations you save in Safari on your iOS devices and Macs are stored on all devices. Here's how:

Tap  Settings and then tap your Apple ID (your name at the top of the screen).

Tap iCloud .

Select Keychain .

Move the iCloud Keychain slider to on (green).

When Safari asks whether you want to save a password when you log into a website, and you say Yes , that information is added to your iCloud Keychain.

Enable this setting on all the devices you want to share the same iCloud Keychain data, and you won't have to enter your usernames and passwords again.

How to Edit and Delete Bookmarks in Safari on an iPhone

Once your bookmarks are saved in Safari on your iPhone, edit or delete bookmarks by following these steps:

Open the bookmarks menu by tapping the open book icon.

Tap the Bookmarks tab and then tap  Edit .

Create a new folder, or delete, rename, or reorder your bookmarks.

When you've completed whatever changes you want to make, tap Done .

How to Add a Website Shortcut to Your iPhone Home Screen With Web Clips

Is there a website that you visit many times a day? Get to it faster with a web clip. Web clips are shortcuts stored on your home screen. They look like apps and take you to your favorite website with one tap.

To create a web clip, follow these steps:

Go to the site you want.

Tap the box-and-arrow icon used to create bookmarks.

In the pop-up menu, tap  Add to Home Screen .

Edit the name of the web clip, if you want.

Tap  Add . An icon is added to your home screen. Tap it to go to that site.

Mid-range android vs. old iphone: you should buy the iphone, getting your iphone repaired could ban you from snapchat.

iCloud will sync all the bookmarks you create in Safari on your Mac to your iPad or iPhone, and vice-versa. But bookmarks aren't quite as simple and obvious on the iPhone as they are on the Mac. Here's how to create and manage them on iOS.

Adding bookmarks on your iPhone is easy, but it's not immediately obvious. The first thing you're likely to do is fumble around in your existing bookmarks before you realize that isn't working. What you have to do if you want to add a bookmark is to tap the Share icon as shown below in red.

Once the Share menu opens, you'll be able to then add the current website to your bookmarks or Favorites. You also have the option to add a site to your reading list, in case you want to read it later, offline, or you can pin it to your Home Screen.

Once you know how to add bookmarks, you can rename them, add them to folders, or delete them.

To manage your Safari bookmarks on your iPhone or iPad, first tap the Bookmarks icon along the bottom row.

Now, in the bookmarks screen, tap the "Edit" button in the bottom-right corner.

Now the edit mode will appear. Next to each bookmark or folder there is a "-" symbol, which means you can tap it and delete stuff.

Tap the "New Folder" link, and you can create a new folder to stash new or current bookmarks. Give your new folder a catchy title and indicate where you want it to reside under the "Location" option.

When you tap "Location", your bookmarks structure will expand and you can tap where you want the new folder to go.

To edit any bookmark, you simply need to tap on one while in edit mode. The "Edit Bookmark" screen will open where you can then give any bookmark a new name, fix URL issues, and like new folders, place it in an appropriate location.

Finally, you may have noticed that while in edit mode, there are three gray bars that appear along the right edge of each bookmark or bookmark folder. These allow you to move stuff around, so if you want to reorder everything, just place your finger on these bars and drag it into the location you choose.

As you can see, adding, deleting, and editing bookmarks and bookmarks folders on Safari for iOS is pretty easy and once you know how to do it, we're sure you'll have your bookmarks named and arranged in exactly the order you see fit.

Since updating 14.5, I can no longer view my favorites or bookmarks always visible in iPadOS Safari. Anyone else having this issue? Is this a known issue Apple is working to resolve?

I just noticed this occurring with my Safari on iPadOS 14.5. I updated yesterday and Safari was fine until a few hours ago. Now I am unable to see my Favorites bar in Safari. I also do not see my favorites listed when I open a new tab or tap in the URL. Have tried restarting and checking my settings. Nothing seems to help so far.

Quick update on a resolution to this. I am thinking the update impacted how bookmarks are handled in Safari on iPadOS. The favorites folder Safari is expecting favorites to be under was different from where my favorites were currently listed. I moved all my bookmarks to the folder Safari wanted and they became visible again on my Favorites Bar. Little annoying, but happy to have everything working normally again.

Best I can tell, it put all of my bookmarks that were previously in my Favorites bar into a folder called “BookmarksBar”. I then had to move all of those back to the ”Favorites” section (only one with a star icon) for them to show up in the bar again. Apparently ”Favorites” is the new “Bookmarks Bar”.
