Damage from storm to be determined as hail tears through parts of southern Alberta

Domestic terminal at calgary international airport partially closed until further notice.

There will be some assessment of the damage on Tuesday morning from a storm that brought intense hail and rainfall through Calgary and other parts of the province on Monday evening.

One of the storms that developed northwest of Calgary became very intense very quickly, said Heather Pimiskern, a meterologist with Environment Canada.

"Some of them moved in from B.C., and what that meant was, as it entered into Alberta, the atmospheric conditions were primed for storms to become severe in nature," she said.

An Alberta Emergency Alert was originally issued at 7:57 p.m. on Monday, warning of torrential rain and baseball-sized hail for parts of southern Alberta.

some large pieces of hail on the grass.

The agency advised people to seek shelter whenever there is dangerous weather.

Pimiskern said Monday night that the largest hail size report the agency received from Calgary was roughly 4.5 centimetres in diameter, which is about the size of a golf ball.

Calgary airport damaged

In an email statement to CBC News sent Monday night, a spokesperson for the Calgary Airport Authority confirmed that the YYC Calgary International Airport domestic terminal building had been damaged by hail and heavy rainfall .

"We are prioritizing the safety of all guests and staff and clearing the impacted area. We are currently assessing the damage and its impact to operations," reads the statement, adding that no injuries have been reported at this time.

a lawn is pictured covered in hail and broken branches.

The spokesperson said that the airport is anticipating delays to inbound and outbound flights as a result of the damage, and travellers are advised to reach out to their airline to confirm the status of their flights.

In a social media post around 1 a.m. Tuesday, the airport authority said parts of the domestic terminal building will remain closed until further notice, adding that work to clean up the water and assess the damage from the storm had started.

'Mother Nature comes calling'

During the storm, traveller Jodie Russett says she watched part of the airport's ceiling fall off.

Russett, who was passing through Calgary from Toronto and heading to Kelowna, B.C., told CBC News she'd have to decide whether to stay overnight at the airport — waiting for her delayed flight to depart — or go stay at a hotel in Calgary until morning.

"What can we do? It's nobody's fault, right?"

Russett wasn't alone. Traveller Emmanuel Ebere was also stuck at the Calgary airport on Monday evening.

"We don't have any much information regarding when we're going to be taking off, or if we're ever going to be taking off tonight," said Ebere.

"It's nobody's fault. Mother Nature comes calling and I guess we just have to adapt to the situation where we're just going to stay calm ... I guess we'll just flow with the tide."

The difference 3 years makes for Sha'Carri Richardson, fastest woman in the world

Portrait of Tyler Dragon

Editor's note: Sha'Carri Richardson won silver in the 100 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics .

Sha'Carri Richardson crossed the finish line in the 100 meters at the 2024 U.S. Olympic track and field trials and experienced an intense feeling of emotion distinctly different than she’s felt ever before.

"This time around, I feel as if it was more − definitely still confident, still my exciting, normal self, but more so the overwhelming feeling of joy," Richardson said following the race in Eugene, Oregon in late June.

Richardson won with a world-leading time of 10.71 to clinch her ticket to the Paris Olympics .

2024 Olympic medals: Who is leading the medal count? Follow along as we track the medals for every sport.

Rewind to three years ago, Richardson won the 100 at the 2020 U.S. Olympic track and field trials (which were in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) with a time of 10.86 seconds to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and quickly became track and field’s newest star. But it came to an abrupt halt when she tested positive for THC and was subsequently suspended for one month.

At the time, Richardson said she used cannabis to help her cope with the death of her biological mother in 2021, just before the Olympic trials. But her suspension ran through the 100 meters at the Tokyo Olympics and she was left off the Team USA roster.

Her story since then is one of growth and redemption that reached a crescendo when she won the gold medal in the 100 at the 2023 world championships, staking claim as the fastest woman in the world.

She proceeded to win gold at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic against a competitive field. A few weeks later on the same track, she crossed the finish line first to qualify for the Paris Olympics, where she’ll be the gold-medal favorite in the 100.

“I would say in the past three years I’ve grown, just having a better understanding of myself, a deeper respect and appreciation for my gift that I have in the sport, and as well as my responsibility to the people that believe in and support me,” Richardson said. “I feel like all those components have helped me grow and will continue to help me grow into the young lady I have been divined and blessed by God to be.

“Having a deeper love and a deeper care for the talent I have been given and I take advantage of it, nurture it, take care of my body, my mind as well as my spirit. That way I can continue to execute and show up on the track.”

One of track and field’s brightest stars

Richardson’s charisma, confidence, perseverance through adversity and success have launched her to become one of track and field’s biggest stars. During the U.S. Olympic trials, Richardson’s victory in the 100 was the most-watched clip on NBC Sports’ YouTube page with approximately 1.5 million views as of June 25. Hayward Field’s roughly 12,650-capacity stadium had 11,852 ticketed spectators in attendance the day Richardson won the 100. Additionally, she had one of the loudest ovations from the crowd when introduced at the trials in Eugene.

“Sha’Carri Richardson has certainly drawn in a lot of people who I wouldn’t even have called them casual fans before,” four-time Olympic gold medalist and NBC analyst Sanya Richards-Ross told USA TODAY Sports. “I think they were people that didn’t watch track and field at all that now feel very connected and invested in the sport because of Sha’Carri.”

Richards-Ross, like many others, considers Richardson a face of track and field.

Training partners in Paris

Richardson is slated to compete in the 100 and 4x100 relay at the Paris Olympics. Her qualification in the 100 was sweetened when her training partners, Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, finished second and third, respectively, in the final to join Richardson on Team USA’s 100-meter squad. The trio are coached by former world-class sprinter Dennis Mitchell.

“It definitely confirmed the year we’ve been training for. We’ve been preparing for this moment. It’s a full-circle moment," Richardson said. "We’re grateful and appreciative and I’m super excited to grow and build from this momentum that we’ve already established. It’s more than exciting to continue to go forward with my girls.

“We didn’t put the world on notice, the world already knew. …We knew this moment could be possible if we put our minds, body and spirit into it."

What’s possible in Paris?

Richardson has an opportunity to reach the pinnacle of the sport in track and field’s signature event if she wins Olympic gold in the 100. The 100 is considered her strongest event; she didn't qualify for the individual 200, finishing fourth at trials. She won’t have to compete with 100 and 200 Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah of Jamaica, who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury . However, the competition to be on top of the Olympic podium will be fierce with Jamaica’s other sprint star Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred. Superstar Shericka Jackson of Jamaica pulled out of the 100 meters to focus on the 200.

More: Eight international track and field stars to know at the 2024 Paris Olympics

If Richardson wins an illustrious gold medal in Paris, her stardom will only shine brighter during an opportune time not only for her but the U.S. as the country promotes its stars in preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“If she goes to Paris and takes care of business in this 100 and she’s the Olympic champion, where’s the next Olympics? Oh, that’s right. It’s in America,” former Olympian and NBC analyst Ato Boldon said. “We are grateful that we even have a chance to cover somebody like Sha’Carri Richardson because she is so important to the sport, not just globally but domestically.”

Richardson is undoubtedly a medal favorite in the 100 and as part of Team USA’s 4x100-relay team. But notwithstanding of the medals Richardson collects, she has a chance to add another remarkable chapter to her story. The one about growth, redemption and − regardless of the outcome in Paris – triumph.

“Everything I’ve been through is everything I’ve been through to be in this moment right now. There’s nothing I’ve been through that hasn’t designed me,” Richardson said. “And I would say going into the Games, I don’t put a time on myself, I just know that if I execute and run the race that I trained and prepared for, the time comes with it. I’m just excited to go out there and run a well-executed race.”

Leave No Trace Ethics for Rock Climbers

Maria aldrich | aug 7, 2024.

Climber on an overhanging cliff

The 7 'Leave No Trace' principles have become common knowledge for avid outdoor recreation participants. For rock climbers, each principle applies, though there are some additional things to keep in mind when heading out for a climbing trip. Here are some rock climbing-specific LNT tips.

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare: When choosing a route, be mindful of your own climbing ability, and the ability of your partner. By researching your intended route and utilizing guidebooks, you will be able to gain a better understanding of what each route has to offer. Along with this, it is always recommended to do gear checks prior to your adventure. This involves inspecting your ropes, harness, and all active and passive protection. Check for fraying on your ropes and other soft goods such as the dogbones of quickdraws, cracking or rust on cams or stoppers, and ensuring your harness is in good condition with a proper belay loop and intact leg loops.

2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces: For some locations, climbing areas do not have a designated trail. However, if there is an established trail, use it and try not to stray from the path. Once you arrive to the base and begin climbing, avoid climbing on vegetation or lichen. Be aware of loose rocks or flakes that may be present.

3. Dispose of Waste Properl y: For climbers, this goes beyond digging a proper cathole. Using chalk for climbing is common, as is seeing its unsightly residue on the rocks. Perhaps we've all seen a climber arriving at the crag, plunging both hands into their chalk bag, and slapping their hands together, creating a cloud of dust. Not only is this cloud uncomfortable to breathe in, but it settles on the ground beneath us. Being modest with the amount of chalk you use and preventing spillage is an excellent way to practice this LNT principle.

4. Leave What You Find: Whenever possible, it is advisable to use removable protection to help preserve the rock and leave it as you found it. Pitons and bolts will leave permanent scars on the rock, so avoid placing these items if it is feasible. Prior to bolting in any location, check with the appropriate land managers to seek permission.

5. Minimize Campfire Impacts: While campfires don't often play a role in a climbing trip, it is important to remain aware of fire regulations in case a fire is needed. Choose to use existing fire rings, keep the fire to a manageable size, and be cautious of the type of wood you are using and where it is from.

6. Respect Wildlife: In some locations such as Yosemite National Park in California and parts of the Adirondacks in New York, climbing route closures are put into place to protect peregrine falcons during nesting season. Respecting these closures and avoiding the areas are imperative to protecting this species' population. Beyond these closures, avoid feeding wildlife and damaging their habitats. Remember, we are guests in their home.

7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors: After topping out on a difficult route, you may be compelled to share the excitement with the world by cheering and yelling. However, the climbing party to your right who is working through the crux of their climb is likely to be annoyed by the commotion. In addition to noise levels, contain your gear in a singular location as a way to share the space with other visitors.

These 7 principles were designed to minimize our impact on the environment around us. It is important that we work together to follow these principles so we can continue enjoying the wilderness as we know it. For more information on 'Leave No Trace' and how to incorporate it into your hiking and camping journey, check out our recent article: Sustainable Camping: Leave No Trace Principles for Eco-Conscious Adventurers.

Breaking news, newly named dem vp pick tim walz calls jd vance ‘creepy,’ touts kamala harris’ track record during debut campaign speech.

PHILADELPHIA – Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz made their  first joint appearance on-stage  at Temple University on Tuesday evening, painting themselves as the “underdog” candidates who are aiming for the “future.”

Harris explained her choice in picking Walz by focusing on his biography, tying the two together through biographical similarities. The message on stage was about the humble beginnings of a California girl born to a “working class” mother and a Nebraska farm boy who has worked his way up the ladder from teacher to congressman to governor and now VP nominee.

Walz, in his debut speech to about 10,000 holding fresh Harris-Walz signs, introduced himself as a small-town man with a “commitment to the people” and stood behind Harris as the Democratic nominee, saying he “couldn’t be prouder to be on this ticket.”

“I was born in West Point, Nebraska and lived in Butte, a small town of 400 where community was a way of life. Growing up, I spent the summers working on the family farm. My mom and dad taught us to show generosity toward your neighbors and to work for the common good.”

Of Harris, Walz stood in line with what the Harris campaign has painted her as: tough.

Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz arrive for a campaign rally in Philadelphia, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024.

“She took on predators and fraudsters, took down transnational gangs, stood up against powerful corporate interests, she never hesitated to reach across the aisle if it meant improving people’s lives. And – she brings joy to everything she does,” Walz said in his first campaign stop of the Harris-Walz multi-state swing.

Walz also spoke out about his support for IVF treatments, saying he wants “the freedom to make your own health care decisions.” His first daughter was named “Hope” after his family’s struggle to get pregnant and then using in-vitro fertilization.

“I can’t wait to debate the guy,” Walz said of Vance after saying the senator “trashed” his hometown in his book “Hillbilly Elegy.”

“If he’s willing to get off the couch and show up,” Walz said, calling Vance “creepy” in reference to the fake meme about the Republican and his love for couches.

Tim Walz

Harris touted Walz’s beginnings in the Midwest as a teacher and football coach, before praising his legislative work on abortion, “voting rights” and his recent views on gun safety laws.

She said comparing Walz to Vance is like choosing between the “varsity team and the JV squad.”

Harris and Walz

Harris labeled herself and “coach” Walz as “two middle class kids” with the same values in an effort to describe the ticket as an outsider, “underdog” story that is fighting for the “future.”

“One, a daughter of Oakland, California, who was raised by a working mother,” Harris said. “The other, a son of the Nebraska plains who grew up working on a farm — only in America is it possible for them together to make it all the way to the White House.”

“Coach Walz and I may hail from different corners of this great country. But our values are the same,” she added. “We both believe in lifting people up, not knocking them down.”

Walz was a high school teacher and football coach before serving in the House of Representatives and becoming governor in 2018.

Harris thanked Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro for his help in trying to win Pennsylvania, despite not choosing him.

Harris had announced her VP pick hours earlier Tuesday morning, choosing the relatively little-known Walz instead of expected battleground favorites like Shapiro.

Walz and Harris will face a grueling three-month election cycle.

Recent polls show that the majority of Americans don’t have an opinion of the Minnesota governor, but Democrat leaders vouched for the governor on stage, including Shapiro – who said he “loves” being Pennsylvania’s governor and getting “sh-t” done.

Vance slammed Harris for going with Walz over Shapiro at an earlier event in Philadelphia, saying she “bent the knee” to the far-left portion of the Democratic party that cares about his Jewish roots.

Vice President Kamala Harris arrives at Philadelphia International Airport for a campaign event at Girard College on August 6, 2024 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Temple University rally was taken with thousands of Harris supporters braving the streets in the rain hoping to get in, with some brandishing signs featuring coconuts – a nod to Harris’ viral “ coconut tree ” meme – and others wearing slime-green colored T-shirts saying “brat.”

Supporters cheered and applauded, danced and roared, with red white and blue wristbands.

JD Vance

The joint appearance came less than three weeks after President Biden took the unprecedented step of ending his re-election bid as difficult questions became raised about his fitness to remain in office following his abysmal debate against former President Donald Trump in June.

Democratic vice presidential nominee Minnesota Governor Tim Walz prepares to depart from his temporary Governors residence for a campaign rally in Philadelphia on August 6, 2024 in St Paul, Minnesota.

Biden’s departure has breathed new life into the race for the Democrats, whose confidence had steadily eroded about the 81-year-old’s chances at defeating Trump in the Nov. 5 presidential election.

People take their seats ahead of U.S Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' rally with her newly chosen vice presidential running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

With the 2024 Democratic ticket now complete, Harris and Walz, 60, must face down a gauntlet of criticism, which has already begun bubbling to the surface.

“This is the most Radical Left duo in American history. There has never been anything like it, and there will never be again,” the former president wrote on Truth Social Tuesday afternoon.

Conservative allies are seizing on that message, with Trump rival-turned-supporter Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis calling team Harris-Walz “the most left-wing ticket in American history.”

A supporter of Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris holds a sign before she speaks at Temple University's Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

But the rally attendees The Post spoke to expressed enthusiasm for Harris’ and Walz’s left-wing record compared to that of Biden.

Terese Jacobson, a Baby Boomer who came from New Jersey, said she hopes Walz “brings the young people to the ticket” as well as veterans and “football people.”

“Young people… were disappointed and became disillusioned [by Biden]… I’m hoping that, because he’s a progressive, these young people will start caring again,” Jacobson said.

She also said choosing Shapiro would not have been wise due to the “scandal” going on about his views towards Israel.

“There’s so many Palestinians and Muslim people in the country that have been affected because of what’s going on with the bombing of hospitals and killing of children in Israel. Even Jewish people have been upset about that. We all support Israel, but Netanyahu’s choices… It just shouldn’t be done the way it’s been done,” Jacobson said. “He’s (Shapiro) had a little bit of a scandal come out now. We don’t have time to be dealing with this.”

Lauren Skaar, a Bucks County, Penn. voter, said she wasn’t “surprised” that the chice was not Shapiro.

Josh Shapiro

“Not surprising. I think he had a lot of baggage – school vouchers and some other stuff. We’re Bucks County voters very much in support of Walz, and [we’re] liking him,” she told The Post.

Another rally goer, Sean Bonner from southern New Jersey, said he thought Walz was chosen because of his experience as a legislator.

“I think she [Harris] made a choice based off who she thought would best help her campaign. I think she made a choice based off experience. Governor Walz is a lot more experienced, he served many years in the House. Governor Shapiro — while he is very talented and I think he’s been a great governor — he has only been governor for about 2 years now. I think experience played a factor in that decision. I think that’s [antisemitism] is blown out of proportion. It exists, I don’t want to deny it. I don’t think it was a determinant factor in President Harris’ decision.”

Other attendees spoke highly of Walz’s history with supporting access to abortion, his lack of “baggage,” his experience and some who could “unify” the Democratic Party.

Ukraine’s medalists at the Paris Olympics face a long trek home. For some, it’s up to a 30-hour trip

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — There won’t be any quick trips home for Ukraine’s medalists at the Paris Olympics .

High jumpers Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Iryna Gerashchenko and hammer thrower Mykhaylo Kokhan picked up their hardware on Monday following a memorable night 24 hours earlier in track and field for the war-torn country.

Gold for Mahuchikh and bronzes for Gerashchenko and Kokhan.

None of them can hop on a direct flight to Ukraine.

All three athletes were fled their country following Russia’s invasion, and only Gerashchenko will return immediately.

Her itinerary? A flight from Paris to Vienna, another plane from Vienna to Moldova. Then a 13- or 14-hour bus ride to Kyiv.

“It’s not easy,” Gerashchenko said.

These days, nothing comes easy for Ukrainian athletes. But they have been given a helping hand from World Athletics president Sebastian Coe.

The track and field federation has taken as strong a stance as any Olympic sport against Russia, stating shortly after the invasion started in February 2022 that Russian athletes would not be allowed to compete in international track competitions.

So it was fitting that Coe placed the medals around the necks of Mahuchikh and Gerashchenko during the high jump ceremony. When he gave Mahuchikh her gold, he stopped to say something in her ear.

Image

“He congrats me and say that he knows how it’s difficult to compete here,” Mahuchikh said. “But we did it and we deserve it.”

A little more than a month ago, Coe visited Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv to reiterate his sport’s support during the war. Coe also invited Zelenskyy to the track and field meet in Paris.

“He’s very brave,” Gerashchenko said, noting that “not everybody” wants to visit Ukraine these days. “We are very thankful for him about his position.”

While Zelensky has not shown up in Paris, he did post a congratulations message to the Ukrainian medalists on social media.

Catch up on the latest from Day 14 of the 2024 Paris Olympics:

  • Boxing: Algerian boxer Imane Khelif will win either a gold or a silver medal when she fights Yang Liu of China in the final of the women’s welterweight division.
  • Relay: 100-meter silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson will lead the U.S. women’s relay team in 4x100-meter final.
  • Soccer: France will face Spain in the final of the men’s soccer tournament, meaning there’ll be a European gold medalist at the Olympics for the first time in 32 years.
  • Keep up : Follow along with our Olympics medal tracker and list of winners. Check out the Olympic schedule of events.

“Ukrainians know how to be strong and how to win,” Zelensky wrote.

The three medals that Ukraine earned were more than any other country took home from the Stade de France on a blockbuster Sunday when Noah Lyles won the 100 meters .

“I wish every day we had the same result,” Kokhan said.

Kokhan is from Zaporizhzhia, the capital of the region that is partially occupied and where Europe’s largest nuclear power plant is located. Russian troops occupied the plant shortly after invading .

Kokhan took up residence in Antalya, Turkey, after the war started. He’s still based there, along with his mom, his sister and his five cats.

It’s a 30-hour trip back to Zaporizhzhia.

“Unfortunately this is the situation we have now,” Kokhan said.

Mahuchikh is from Dnipro, a city of nearly 1 million located only about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the front lines of the war.

She won’t make it home until October, after she finishes her Diamond League season with a few more meets in Europe.

Mahuchikh added Olympic gold to her world and European titles.

“Today I really realized that I’m Olympic champion,” she said. “I finally got it.”
