Excellent customer seevice

After mistakenly booking tickets to the Xmas light trail in Leicester, I got in touch with Alice who informed that a refund was not possible. However due to the fact I live so far away from Leicester and wouldn’t attend regardless, she went above and beyond to secure me a full refund while also ensuring I was booked onto the light trail nearest me and my family. Many thanks Alice for excellent and prompt customer service.

Customer service = non existent

Bought a day out with these guys purely because of the reviews about them helping when things went wrong but the reality is that they don’t care. It’s been two weeks and they haven’t even managed to reply to a message. Approach with caution. Edited to add… they did reply. Much longer after their advertised response time and by sending us to the zoo. The complaint was not “how the animals were displayed” (thanks for minimising that issue on my sons 8th birthday) but that we paid the best part of £100 to see about three animals. The park was disappointing on many levels. One baby changing facility in the cafe we were in which was full of families hence giant queues for baby changing, enclosures were shut off earlier than the parks advertised closing time and the price of food and drink was disgusting given the entry fee. We paid this money to Love to Visit because of the guarantees that if things went wrong we’d have a broker/vendor on our side. This is not the case. Passing feedback over to people who also don’t care is not helpful.

Hi Gaby, Thank you for using Lovetovisit! Our customer support team will always try our best to help you as fast as we possibly can! Firstly, the complaint was regarding the way that the animals in the zoo were displayed, and unfortunately we are unable to directly help with that. This is because we're not the actual attraction but one of their ticketing managers. However, in order to try our best to help, we've forwarded your complaint to the park and confirmed it in the the reply of your email last week but we were met with no response. We've forwarded the email to you again today and we hope to hear from you soon to try our best to help!

Really helpful as had booked just for one thing at Portsmouth dockyard as didn’t think enough time to see more - circumstances changed & one quick email & phone call & a gift voucher code sent immediately so I could easily upgrade. Very polite courteous service

Buy tickets directly from the venue

Tried to change the dates of tickets due to a clash. Was told this was possible. Spent 3 weeks, multiple calls and emails trying to sort this. Several emails were ignored. Then told it's not possible with confusing explanation given.

Date of experience : 16 February 2024

Hi Christina, Thank you for using Lovetovisit! Our customer support team will always try our best to help you as fast as we possibly can! However, there are instances where the attraction would not allow an amendment or cancellation to the tickets. We always try our best to push for it and sometimes even after a lot of back and forth, they would still deny our request. Therefore, we would need to follow their policies as well. This is due to the fact that we are a third-party ticketing reseller and have no control of their policies. We know that this may not be the outcome you wanted and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Please contact us if you have any more enquires, we’re always here to help.

We visited Luminate at West Park in…

We visited Luminate at West Park in Wolverhampton on 15th December. Well laid out display with some interactive sections for children (and adults alike) to have fun experiencing. We went with our adult daughter and 6year old grandson who loved the different effects as we walked round specially the interactive parts. The only minor criticism we had was the lack of clear instruction of which entrance (nearest side street) we needed as there are many around the park as you can drive all around it. The signage that was put out was only partly on the outskirt of the park so not clear if you came in onto the road from the other side of the park.

Updated review

I booked tickets for the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool, travelled up from Birmingham to enjoy the dancing there only to find that the ballroom was closed for a private function that day. In future I will make sure that I book directly with the ballroom and not through a third party - who, on this occasion, displayed a totally unacceptable level of inefficiency. As an UPDATE I would add that Lovetovisit have responded promptly to this review and I therefore cannot fault their customer service.

Dear Gerardine, Thank you for using Lovetovisit! Firstly, we want to extend our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience you've faced with the incident at Tower Ballroom. It truly shocked us to hear about the situation with the Tower Ballroom and we're doing everything in our power to rectify this swiftly. I want you to know that your frustration is completely understandable, and we're here to support you through this. While we work on resolving the issue with the Tower Ballroom, your refund has been sorted and confirmed, despite Tower Ballroom not informing us that there was an event there. Additionally, as a small token of our appreciation for your patience and understanding, we're prepared to issue you a gift card for anything you'd like on Lovetovisit! If you have any questions or need further assistance, please reach out to us. We're here to help in any way we can.

Responsive & Ivan went over & above!

We booked the Eclectic Belfast Walking Tour with Lovetovisit &, unfortunately, our flight was unexpectedly cancelled. We let Lovetovisit know as soon as we found out & Ivan couldn’t have been more helpful - working with the walking tour guide (Marti) to get us booked in at an alternative time. Thanks so much for all of your help, Ivan - you really went over & above, & we thoroughly enjoyed the tour! :)

I would 100% recommend Lovetovisit! I sadly made a an error with my booking, when I contacted them, Andy went above and beyond to help fix my problem quickly and efficiently. LovetoVisit: lowest price, reliable site

Bought from LovetoVisit the 3 attractions deal in London (London Eye, Shrek's Adventure, Sea Life). It was the site with the lowest price I've found that also let me choose whichever attractions I wanted. Got reduced price tickets which was good. However, due to illness the tickets had to be changed and this went well, also we were offered a refund. If we had received the voucher without having to chase it I would have given 5stars.

The booking started off smoothly

The booking started off smoothly , then received a call to say the flight showing online wasn't operating and given a choice of 3 alternative flight times. Chose alternative flight time to be told, as a gesture of good will we will pay the fee for the flight change. Damn sure you will. If you are advertising flights that are no longer operational then yes you should shoulder that cost. That being said the caller was extremely polite and apologetic even though she made out she was doing me a favour ! Other than that a pretty smooth transaction . Looking forward to holiday now 😀

Hidden costs

Booking is reasonably straightforward. My one issue is that the advertised price is based on nothing being included which is actually pretty essential: 1) Transfer: an extra £36 2) luggage - flights with Easyjet with hand luggage only. £55 extra for a cabin case. so £90 I wasn't expecting. It's a bit naughty...

Date of experience : April 25, 2024

Everything worked out in the end but not getting instant confirmation doesn’t work for me. I didn’t realise that’s how it works and even went through my booking again to see if I missed it which I didn’t. Booking a trip for 2 weeks time and not getting confirmation until 3 days later is crazy..didn’t know whether to start getting excited or not…were 20 quid cheaper then everywhere else but in future will go elsewhere for instant confirmation. Thanks tho it was an amazing trip.

Excellent Customer Service

I've dealt with loveholidays for awhile and have booked a couple of holidays with them (sun holidays and city breaks) they offer great deals on a wide range of holiday packages with optional extras.. they have a low deposit to secure bookings and payment plans to suit a wide range of budgets. I never really had any issues with them. But I did have some small issues on one holiday but as soon as I contacted them they resolved it in no time, The customer service is really reliable. 10/10

Best price & information on hotel

Good photos and information on the hotel of choice, price was best i could find - same holiday more expensive on jet2, tui & on the beach. easy, clear booking process. Loved the fact I could book the airport parking too !

Date of experience : April 26, 2024

Simple, great prices, good choices. Only set back (which was annoying if anything but not important) is no transfer times shown for any holidays.

Easy online booking

Easy online booking, All flight details, transfers and hotel sorted. Been in touch with hotel to confirm booking and ask for 3 rooms together. If all goes well will definitely book again..

Run/ hidden Cost/ they do not care!

Run! Scam. Hidden Costs! Money grabbers! They don’t care. Imagine arriving at a holiday you’re forced to go on because of terrible service from love holidays telling you you can’t cancel your booking regardless of countless mistakes Love holidays made! just to arrive at an all inclusive holiday you paid for to pay extra monies for Environmental charge on arrival! ??? TRaSh! tRASh! 🗑️

Add on costs

As a "package" holiday it would be useful if the package included everything. The addition of cases and transfers added almost 25% to the headline price and this is not obvious until you actually start the booking. Minor issue but could be important for some.

Holiday with Daughter

on booking everything is easily followed and seamless. could not wish for anything better. All the information required to make your holiday booking stressless. I have used your company many times and quality service.

Great customer service

I received a telephone call from the company shortly after booking explaining that the rooms I booked were not available and they would upgrade me and partially pay for the upgrade. Which is exactly what they did. I was delighted.

Assisting managing your payment trip

Well the whole process was so self explanatory and straight forward. I was giving the opportunity to choose convenient mode of payment that best meet my needs. I was giving options and not subject me to pressure. The company research for different holidays and hotels were exclusive and detailed.

Love Holidays, always good options with payments.

Love Holidays always provides a good easy experience, the pay monthly is also very easy to use, and also if you want to change your hotel or upgrade at the same destination, at a later date, easy to do. When I needed a chat with somebody about any issues, this has always been rectified. I would have no hesitation using love holidays to book a holiday, hopefully in the future more hotels, and different places can be added for long haul destinations.

Told us the wrong date for our flight, left us stranded in another country with loads of fees as there were no more flights to our home destination. Do not trust love holidays they are scammers. They are in no way ATOL compliant

Most of our tickets are sent to you by email as soon as you have made a booking. If you haven't received them please check your junk folder. If they aren't there, you can request them to be sent again in the 'Account' section of the platform.

If they are not appearing in your Account, please contact us using the form below and we'll investigate for you.

We also now try and send you tickets to your mobile device by text message, just check your text messages for one from Lovetovisit.

My ticket doesn't have an entry date or a time on it. When can I visit?

Some of our tickets are completely open-ended - this means that you can go on any date and time that the attraction is open. The open-ended tickets offer total flexibility so are really useful if you want to buy an experience for someone as a gift. When you purchase any open-ended tickets on Lovetovisit.com, we will always provide you with further instructions and contact information for the experience provider should you require them to secure a timeslot.

I'm trying to book a ticket for today but it won't let me. How do I do this?

Some of our tickets are not available to book on the day that you want to attend (this is because the visitor list is provided to the attraction or event at the end of the previous day). If the date is not showing as available when you book we're afraid that these tickets need to be booked in advance.

I'd like to change or cancel my booking how do I do this?

We act as an intermediary between you and the attraction or event that you are booking. This means that the cancellation and amendment policies do vary by supplier and we have no control over these. Generally suppliers don't allow cancellations, but some do let you cancel up to 48 hours in advance of your booking. Please complete the form below, and we will check for you and make the cancellation or amendment if we can, but cannot provide any guarantees over refunds.

There are so many ‘things to do’, I’m not sure how to decide - can Love to Visit help?

Of course! If you fill in the form below saying when you are visiting, what type of things interest you, and whether you want activities suitable for children on not, one of our experts will be happy to help you put together an itinerary.

Do you offer concessions or carer tickets?

Some of our attractions and events do offer discounts or carer tickets. Where these are available you will see them listed when you select your tickets.

What proof do I need to provide for a carer ticket or a concession?

  • Attendance Allowance or Carer's Allowance letter of award
  • Incapacity Benefit books, or a letter notifying the recipient that the benefit has been awarded
  • A Blue or Orange badge, or
  • In the case of visual impairment, a registration card known as the BD8 or a Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI).
  • International Proof of Disability (ISA (international symbol of access) or similar must be printed on it)

If you do not have any of these documents please telephone the attraction or event in advance to check that your alternative proof is going to be accepted

Can I purchase a gift card to use in the future?

You certainly can! Lovetovisit Gift Card available here!

I'd like my attraction or event to be listed on your platform. How do I do this?

If you are an attraction or event owner we'd love to have you on Lovetovisit.com. If you visit our partner site at partner.lovetovisit.com you can leave some details and one of our team will help you onboard.

I would 100% recommend Love to Visit

I would 100% recommend Love to Visit. They were professional and. easy to access when I needed to contact them. They listened to my concerns and were happy to change the day of my booking to ensure that I was able to go and enjoy the experience that I had booked. The price was also more competitive in comparison to other sites. I would definitely booked via Love to Visit again.

A little confused

Our tickets were amazing to use and no problems getting in. I am just confused and unable to find out if I can get my tickets reimbursed as it was a rainy day and the park itself does reimburse tickets if it rains and rides close.

Makes going out less of a hassle

I often am moving between Oxford and London and it can be really difficult to figure out what events are going on with my busy schedule. It's amazing to be able to easily find things near me and book right there. It actually makes me want to go out more often!

Date of experience : 28 March 2022

Hi Alex, Many thanks for your review and for choosing Lovetovisit.com! We're glad that you are happy with our algorithm and that you want to go out more often and discover new places with us. Kind regards, Lovetovisit.com team.

Whisky tour and old town tour

Shout out to Angus and Alistair! Great tours, great stories told with cracking humour. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would absolutely recommend to someone visiting Edinburgh for the first time, saw plenty and learnt so much! (We did the whisky tour and the old town tour)

Date of experience : 24 February 2023

Hi Leigh, Thank you for the kind words and using Lovetovisit to book the tour! We hope to see you booking through our site once again!

They listen to their customers

Rubbish customer service. Would not use them again. Bought what I believed were tickets for the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam-as soon as I paid it said welcome to Van Gogh in York-I emailed straight away explaining that I had made an error and could they refund me as I was in Amsterdam. They categorically refused. I don’t recommend and suggest everyone gives them a wide berth.Having complained about my situation they reconsidered my request for a refund and have authorised it.

Date of experience : 23 March 2023

Hi Nadia, We're sorry to hear this. Someone from our senior team is getting in touch with you as we speak, so please keep an eye out for the communication. Alice

All came good

Ordered tickets but weather was forecast for gale force winds and rain meaning rides would be closed. Contacted and asked if I could change the date and got a call back and was told they would refund me with gift vouchers so we could book again at our leisure which I was really impressed with. I had to chase up as didn’t receive the email but was finally sent it with lots of apologies and some extra money added - couldn’t ask for me really so now looking forward to rebooking our day out! Thank you

Dear Kate, Thank you for using Lovetovisit! Firstly, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. So I was looking for a trip saved my holiday

So I was looking for a trip, and for some reason I got charged for the trip. I’ve booked through love even though the trip was not with them. Anyway, long story short, they fully refunded my trip with out getting any satisfaction from the tour company. They were very kind and understanding, and I’d like to thank the company, I have now refunded my amount. Many thanks, Mrs Joyce Hills and definitely will use the company in the future. I also gave me great encouragement to know that booking online, what is the Safeway through this company?

Wow one of the worst experience ever I…

I would highly recommend with this company with my eyes closed as during the time of making an order I had a small problem with the package that was advertised in Google and the package that was delivered to me. But the owner of the company straight away called me and fixed the issue and WOW that’s just amazing from them because I never thought I would get my problem solved within an error. Definitely I can assure you that this company is something that is going to grow so huge. Good luck to their entire team and I hope you grow into all European countries like Klook.

Hi Aiswarya, Firstly, we would like apologise for any inconvenience caused. We called and sent an email earlier in the hopes of resolving this issue, as our company's policy is to help our customers as much as possible. Please contact us via 02080 505682, if you need any more help!

It seems the web contact isn’t working and that’s why there wasn’t a reply. Love to visit have now sent a gift card so we can rebook. No one replies to any attempt at contact, this has been going on for four weeks now.

Really good customer service experience!

Hi there, I just wanted to share with you our amazing experience with Joe from the customer service team. We had booked an attraction to go on the boats but we did it to the wrong direction. We panicked and called the customer service number, hoping to get a refund or a reschedule. That's when we talked to Joe, who was really helpful and patient over the phone. He gave us the option to switch our tickets to another time slot. He also sorted out everything really quickly and less than an hour before the tickets were changed. We want to thank Joe for his professionalism and kindness. He is a great asset to your company and we hope he gets recognized for his excellent work. Sincerely, Gabriela & Anderson

Super customer service experience

I had booked a visit to the Van Gogh experience in Leicester but unfortunately, due to an injury was unable to attend. I called ‘Love to visit’ and spoke to Joe, who was incredibly polite and helpful and managed to liaise with the venue and arrange for a gift certificate so that I could rebook. This was all done very quickly and I was really impressed. Thank you so much Joe and all at ‘Love to visit’ I will definitely be booking though you in future and will highly recommend you.

Booked London theatre week tickets with them for such a low price for me and my friend. The overall booking experience was very smooth, although it took a few minutes for the ticket confirmation page to go through on a 5g network. I believe that's mainly because the website is in beta.

We missed our cruise on the date of our booking but the staff was very helpful and considerate enough to squeeze us in the next day. This clearly shows a great gesture and hospitality towards tourists. Special thanks to Fed.

I recently booked tickets for my family to visit Blackpool tower ballroom however when we arrived the ballroom was closed to the general public for an organised dance competition . I e mailed Lovetovisit.com regarding this issue . I received an apology within 24 hours and then followed quickly after with yet another apology and promise of a refund and a £30 gift voucher also as goodwill gesture . Lovetovisit.com were not at fault as they were not informed of the organised event and the Tower should not have allowed the sale of tickets . All in all the service provided was exemplary.

Tracing the evolution of lesbian cinema, from 'Go Fish' to 'Love Lies Bleeding'

Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon in "Bound," Rose Troche and V.S. Brodie in "Go Fish" and Katy M. O'Brian and Kristen Stewart in "Love Lies Bleeding."

Since the dawn of Hollywood, movies have played a prominent role in both the invisibility and visibility of lesbians. Even though the blatantly homophobic Hays Code era ended in the 1960s, it’s only been in the last 30 years that queer women have been able to be out in front of and behind the camera, quite literally showing the diversity of a community that encompasses a wide range of identities within one shared culture.

“There are little waves of momentum,” said filmmaker and historian Jenni Olson. “Being able to point to something that succeeds helps other filmmakers.”

In 2024, the fruits of lesbian labor can be seen in wide-release films like “Bottoms,” “Drive-Away Dolls” and, most recently, “Love Lies Bleeding,” but they’re just the latest in a series of moments Sapphic cinephiles are gifted once every few years. These moments started with the advent of openly lesbian films in the 1980s, with dyke bars and film festivals playing the polyamorous vampire flick “The Hunger,” the bisexual athletic drama “Personal Best” and Donna Deitch’s adaptation of Jane Rule’s 1950s divorce ranch romance “Desert Hearts” practically on a loop.

Alex McArthur, Helen Shaver, Patricia Charbonneau and Andra Akers a publicity photo for "Desert Hearts."

“There genuinely were not enough lesbian films,” said Olson, a former programming director at San Francisco’s Frameline LGBTQ film festival. She said lesbians got tired of being relegated to smaller theaters to watch the same films year after year, and recalled a “lesbian riot” erupting at the festival.

“The legend is that they stormed the projection booth,” Olson said, noting it led to a changing moment.

Seeking to help women and other marginalized filmmakers see their projects across the finish line, Frameline’s board brought in women like Olson to work with their gay male counterparts and launched a Completion Fund in 1990. The early ’90s was already a crucial turning point with the advent of “ new queer cinema ,” a movement celebrated by film critic B. Ruby Rich to refer to the success of emerging queer filmmakers like Todd Haynes, Isaac Julien, Tom Kalin and Gregg Araki, who were winning awards and distribution deals for their explicitly gay work.

Things didn’t change for queer women, however, until a scrappy little film out of Chicago called “Go Fish” made a splash at Sundance in 1994.

“It’s so great to look back and appreciate how significant ‘Go Fish’ really was,” Olson said. “It was the first widely released lesbian film that told the everyday lives of a young, racially diverse, politically engaged, contemporary lesbian friend group. We could watch it and say, ‘Oh, this is something that represents me. That looks like me. That looks like my life,’ in a way that hadn’t happened before.”

A still from "Go Fish" by Rose Troche. Courtesy of Sundance Institute.

Screenwriter and actor Guinevere Turner said by the early 1990s, she had watched practically every lesbian film and never saw herself or her friends represented in the limited portrayals available at the time.

“Lesbian films were starting to get a reputation for being kind of depressing and moody and low production quality,” Turner told NBC News. “At that point, I think the two words ‘lesbian film’ just sounded dreary to the world, like it was going to be some somber lonely lady on a fainting couch, which a lot of them were.”

Turner and her eventual collaborator, Rose Troche, met in Chicago in the early ’90s while both were part of ACT UP, a grassroots group working to end the AIDS crisis. The duo eventually decided to create the type of film they wanted to see.

“I had never even read a script, much less written one,” said Turner, who would go on to write the screenplay for and star in “Go Fish,” which would catapult her career and Troche’s.

Shot on 16 mm film in black and white, “Go Fish,” about finding love in Chicago’s lesbian community, was filmed over several years with nonactors pulled from diners and dance clubs to make up the community Turner and Troche, the film’s co-screenwriter and director, were part of and knew existed elsewhere.

They secured finishing funds from Frameline and a boost from Killer Films’ Christine Vachon, who connected them with producer John Pierson, who already had hits like Spike Lee’s 1986 film “She’s Gotta Have It” under his belt. Pierson’s signoff ensured that “Go Fish” had the unlikely but heartening distinction of becoming the first film to ink a major distribution deal at the Sundance Film Festival in 1994, signing with The Samuel Goldwyn Co. to the tune of $450,000.

“It was very exciting to have something that was so uncompromising and from inside the community,” Rich said.

“Some of it is just right place, right time,” Turner said of the film’s success. “When independent cinema was really starting to be an exciting thing, it was like the 25th anniversary of Stonewall, and we hit a moment where k.d. lang was on the cover of Vanity Fair getting shaved by Cindy Crawford.”

Canadian filmmaker Patricia Rozema —  whose third film, the lesbian romance “When Night Is Falling,” was released one year after “Go Fish” hit theaters — said she was impressed with how “Go Fish” was not centered on a coming-out experience, as most previous lesbian films had been.

“I really loved how it was just not, ‘She’s coming out! Will she? Won’t she? Can she? Oh, but where are the boys?’” Rozema said. “It’s just a bunch of women living their lives and being who they are.”

Shortly after its Sundance premiere, “Go Fish” opened in theaters nationwide just in time for Pride Month in June 1994, with Turner and Troche receiving favorable press in The New Yorker and Vanity Fair, and traveling around the world in support of the film.

They also found camaraderie and healthy competition with other aspiring lesbian filmmakers at the time, several of whom went on to write, direct and produce their own queer films. These filmmakers include Maria Maggenti (1995’s “The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love”), Cheryl Dunye (1996’s “The Watermelon Woman”), Lisa Cholodenko (1998’s “High Art”), Kimberly Peirce (1999’s “Boys Don’t Cry”), Jamie Babbit (1999’s “But I’m a Cheerleader”) and Angela Robinson, whose Sapphic spy film “D.E.B.S.” was also a sensation at Sundance as a short before being turned into a feature for release in 2004.

Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall in "But I'm a Cheerleader."

Robinson said “Go Fish” was “earth-shattering at the time,” leading to at least a decade of Hollywood taking a chance on lesbian filmmakers looking to make work with explicitly gay themes. Notably, after several lesbian films received R and NC-17 ratings, “D.E.B.S.” was the first lesbian film to be rated PG-13.

“There was a definite kind of energy and soup around that time,” Robinson said, “and it felt really political to even get your movie made. You really felt like part of the movement was also seen if you could kind of crash into Hollywood and get your movie all the way through all the barriers of the time.”

One of those barriers included casting, which was a struggle when even mini-majors and independent studios were looking for Hollywood stars to be attached to any given project. For “Go Fish,” Turner and Troche pulled in friends and women off the street, but for features that required professionals, there were very few lesbian actors out in the ’90s, and if straight actors didn’t pass on the projects themselves, their management or publicists did on their behalf with concerns about career repercussions.

When casting the leads for their 1996 debut “Bound,” Lilly and Lana Wachowski saw several established actors pass despite the fleshed-out characters of lovers Corky and Violet. Those roles eventually went to Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly, who would eventually become stars due, in part, to their undeniable chemistry in the smoldering neo-noir, opening a door for actors (straight and otherwise) to see the potential accolades and attention possible for playing a lesbian part.

“It actually speaks a lot to Jennifer and Gina’s courage to take on these two roles that a lot of women passed on,” Lilly Wachowski said. “But Gina and Jennifer certainly saw that the script had a lot going for it and the way that we would talk about it because we were extremely interested in the culture.”

Like “Go Fish,” “Bound” also employed real queer women to be a part of the project (particularly the film’s bar scene), and queer sexpert Susie Bright both made a cameo in “Bound” and advised on the film’s Sapphic sex scenes, years before intimacy coordinators became a consideration. Two years after “Go Fish” premiered to a packed house at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre for Frameline, “Bound” played at the same theater to a similarly full house of lesbians and other queers who were shocked to see the leading ladies win in the end.

“We wanted them to have this heroic moment,” Wachowski said of Violet and Corky, the leads in “Bound,” adding that she was “happy and proud to have been able to give” queer audiences “this thing that they had never seen before.”

Olson recalled Troche sharing a similar sentiment at the 1994 premiere of “Go Fish” at the Castro Theatre: “I remember Rose saying to the 1,400 ecstatic lesbians, ‘I made this for you.’”

“Go Fish” and its contemporaries inspired a new era of lesbian filmmakers who brought an expansive view of what it means to be queer and a woman in different bodies and corners of the world, including Nisha Gantra’s “Chutney Popcorn” (1999), Alice Wu’s “Saving Face” (2004), Dee Rees’ “Pariah” (2011) and Desiree Akhavan’s “Appropriate Behavior” (2014). Around this time, Sapphic entertainment started to switch gears, with Troche, Turner, Robinson and several others turning to television when Showtime debuted “The L Word” in 2004. Running for six seasons, the Los Angeles-set lesbian series was another huge moment for lesbian visibility on screen, sharing several throughlines with “Go Fish,” including Turner’s recurring appearance on the show.

Katy O'Brian, left, and Kristen Stewart in "Love Lies Bleeding."

Despite the continued production of lesbian films during this period, they remained largely relegated to limited release. By the time “The L Word” went off the air in 2009, independent cinema had changed. Now, even though it’s easier than ever to make a movie, it’s never been more difficult to get it seen in a culture inundated with content. Without the Hollywood muscle of a producer like Elizabeth Banks (“Bottoms”) or a star like Kristen Stewart (“Love Lies Bleeding”) willing to bare all on the cover of Rolling Stone, LGBTQ film festivals are more necessary than ever for aspiring filmmakers whose work is not solely based on career aspirations, but on reflecting and reaching their community.

“It didn’t explode — it didn’t become bigger,” Rich said of lesbian cinema. “There is the sense in which the lesbian representation is always the bridesmaid, never the bride. We never really arrive, we’re always arriving.”

Three decades after “Go Fish” helped usher in an era of new lesbian cinema, the film is finding new audiences (and vice versa) with a new 4K print restoration that showed at Sundance this past January and at NewFest, New York City’s LGBTQ film festival, in April, with further screenings this summer. A retrospective of Rozema’s work played in both New York and Los Angeles this month, “D.E.B.S.” has just been announced as part of Cinespia’s Pride screening series in L.A. in June, and “Bound” has just been entered into The Criterion Collection.

Still, in three decades, there’s a lot left to be desired, with even proven creators like Turner, Wachowski and Robinson, all of whom have queer film and television projects in the ether that have yet to be greenlit, indicating that Hollywood might be stuck in yet another cyclical ebb for lesbian or otherwise queer content.

“There’s a similar elation to that idea of me sitting in that audience in the Castro and being humbled that I was able to do this for all these people,” Wachowski said. “I’m just not satisfied enough, so I’m simultaneously fighting as hard as I can to get these kinds of films made while railing against an industry that I think is responding to a lot of the queer backlash that is going on in the world. So I’m happy, but I’m still pissed off.”
