Sacred Heart holiday home tour returns to Fabulous Forties
East Sacramento tradition features five designer-decorated homes

Expect to see lots of people strolling around the Fabulous Forties this weekend as a favorite Sacramento holiday tradition returns.
After a year off due to Covid restrictions, the annual Sacred Heart Parish School Holiday Home Tour will once more busy the streets of the East Sacramento neighborhood.
“The home tour is back this year!” announced the organizers. “We will have five amazing houses for you to tour the first weekend of December. The Cafe and Boutique will also be back this year with wonderful vendors and delicious food.”
A Fabulous Forties tradition since 1973, the Sacred Heart home tour went on hiatus during Covid. Last year, the school still hosted its ever-popular holiday boutique and cafe, but no designer-decorated homes – the event’s main draw. Proceeds from the tour support school programs and help offset tuition for students in need of assistance.
For this return, the tour has five classic homes in its East Sacramento neighborhood, each decorated in style by local designers. Within easy walking distance of each other, the houses are located on 39th, 40th and 41st streets and Sonoma and San Miguel ways. (Addresses are available on the tour’s website.)
Tickets ($30) are available now online at a discount, but you'd better hurry. Online sales cut off Thursday, Dec. 1. Starting Friday, admission goes up to $35 and tickets may be purchased at Sacred Heart Parish School or home No. 1 on the tour, 1304 39th St.
Meanwhile, admission is free to the event’s boutique and cafe. Held at the school, the boutique features more than two dozen local vendors and craftspeople. For a list of vendors, go to: https://sacredhearthometour.com/boutique .
“We will be having an amazing in-person boutique this year,” say the organizers. “It will feature many of the vendors you have come to know and love over the years, as well as some new vendors. It’s a great place to do all your holiday shopping. There is something for everyone on your list. Bring your friends and make a day of it.”
Hours: Noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4.
Sacred Heart Parish School is located at 856 39th St., Sacramento.

Garden Checklist for week of May 12
Get your gardening chores and irrigation done early in the day before temperatures rise.
* Plant, plant, plant! It’s prime planting season in the Sacramento area. Time to set out those tomato transplants along with peppers and eggplants. Pinch off any flowers on new transplants to make them concentrate on establishing roots instead of setting premature fruit.
* Direct-seed melons, cucumbers, summer squash, corn, radishes, pumpkins and annual herbs such as basil.
* Harvest cabbage, lettuce, peas and green onions. This heat will cause leafy greens and onions to flower; pick them before they bolt.
* In the flower garden, direct-seed sunflowers, cosmos, salvia, zinnias, marigolds, celosia and asters.
* Plant dahlia tubers. Other perennials to set out include verbena, coreopsis, coneflower and astilbe.
* Transplant petunias, marigolds and perennial flowers such as astilbe, columbine, coneflowers, coreopsis, dahlias, rudbeckia and verbena.
* Keep an eye out for slugs, snails, earwigs and aphids that want to dine on tender new growth.
* Feed summer bloomers with a balanced fertilizer.
* For continued bloom, cut off spent flowers on roses as well as other flowering plants.
* Got fruit trees? If you haven't already done so, thin orchard fruit such as apples, peaches, pears, pluots and plums before they grow too heavy, breaking branches or even splitting the tree. Leave the largest fruit on the branch, culling the smaller ones, and allow for 5 to 6 inches (or a hand's worth) between each fruit.
* Thin grape bunches, again leaving about 6 inches between them. For the remaining bunches, prune off the "tail" end, about the bottom third of the bunch, so that the plant's energy is concentrated in the fruit closest to the branch.
* As spring-flowering shrubs finish blooming, give them a little pruning to shape them, removing old and dead wood. Lightly trim azaleas, fuchsias and marguerites for bushier plants.
* Add mulch to the garden to help keep that precious water from evaporating. Mulch also cuts down on weeds. But don’t let it mound around the stems or trunks of trees or shrubs. Leave about a 6-inch to 1-foot circle to avoid crown rot or other problems.

Original Post
(12/4/17) Description of the annual Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour, a popular three-day event featuring professionally decorated homes in the Fab Forties of East Sacramento.
To say that the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour is wildly popular is an understatement! Spending part of a day on the self-guided home tour is an excellent way to get into the holiday spirit. The event benefits the students of the Sacred Heart Parish School.
The homes featured on the tour are generally located in the Fab 40’s – similar to the East Sacramento Garden Tour held each year over the Mother’s Day weekend. My plan of action was to walk to the home most distant and then make my way towards home – just as my daughter and I have done over the years on Mother’s Day. See related post: East Sacramento Garden Tour
SacramentoRevealed.com – All Things Sacramento (from a personal perspective)
Local designers are tapped to decorate each home on the tour. Attendees not only have the opportunity to enjoy the beautifully decorated homes, but also to make note of the many clever decorating ideas utilized that can be replicated at home.
2017 Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour
The day started out overcast, but the sun was out when I started to make my way to 47 th Street. It was a beautiful day and I had the opportunity to enjoy the many trees sporting fall foliage and the homes along the way all decked out for the holidays.
47th Street
When I arrived at the Tudor-style 47 th Street home there was a line to enter – and the same was true for each home on the tour. However, I was in no hurry and the wait was never very long. The 47th Street home had a Nutcracker Ballet themed design. The kitchen counter was “dressed” in a pink tutu that extended to the floor.
44th Street
The next two homes on the tour were on 42 nd Street. I, however, made a small detour on 44 th Street to take a picture of the beautiful “blue” home that was featured in the movie “Lady Bird”. Lady Bird was both written and directed by Sacramento-native Greta Gerwig. See related post: Lady Bird – A Sacramento Love Letter
42nd Street
Afterwards I made my way to 42nd Street. The first home I visited on 42nd Street was a bungalow-style home. On the front porch a fiddle player was playing Christmas music, and the interior decoration was designed to evoke a simple country Christmas.
The second home on 42 nd Street had an interesting backstory – it was modeled after a train depot for the original owners. The home was decorated throughout with all things white and cream.
40th Street
The next two homes were both located on 40 th Street. The first, a remodeled Craftsman-style home, had a winter sleigh in the front yard and the interior was decorated in classic holiday colors. The second home on 40 th Street was a remodeled cottage. The theme was “California Christmas” with some added sparkle.
39th Street
My last stop was a Cottage-style home on 39 th Street. I had passed by the home on my way to 47 th Street knowing that it would be my last stop. I was glad to see that the length of the line was much shorter than earlier in the day.
After leaving the 39 th Street home I continued down the street and stopped by the Sacred Heart Parish School to visit the Holiday Cafe and Boutique. Both the cafe and boutique appeared to be doing a brisk business. I then headed home.
To sum up, it was a very pleasant way to spend part of a beautiful sunny day in Sacramento – with the added bonus of getting in some exercise.
(10/21/2023) 2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the home tour! Home tour dates are Friday, December 1 (Noon to 8:00 p.m.); Saturday, December 2 (10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and December 3 (11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).
(11/27/2022) Mark your calendar for the 2022 event featuring five beautiful homes decorated to the nines!
The dates this year are Friday, December 2 (noon – 8:00 p.m.), Saturday, December 3 (10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.) and Sunday, December 4 (11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Go to the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour website (see above) to purchase your tickets.
(11/26/20) This year the annual holiday home tour is going virtual! 2020 is the 47th Anniversary of the home tour.
The free virtual home tour will go live the weekend of December 12-13. Links will be provided on the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour website.
This year the event will feature four homes – a craftsman, a cottage, a modern farmhouse, and a bungalow all decorated for the holidays.

This week is your chance to get a look inside some of East Sacramento's most beautiful homes through the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour.
The tour, which is a 45-year-old tradition, will feature five East Sacramento homes. Thousands are expected to come out and support the community fundraiser.
Some of the homes have traditional Christmas themes, but other designers said they are focusing on gold and black and non-traditional decor.
Organizers said the holiday home tour gets people in the Christmas spirit, offers decorating tips for the holiday season and supports a good cause.
"It is vital for our school. It is our biggest fundraiser and it allows us to keep our tuition at a reasonable rate. Also, (it) allows us to have children who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford to attend Sacred Heart," Sacred High School Principal Theresa Sparks said.
Every year, the Sacred Heart Holiday Home Tour raises a $250,000 for the school and its students. This year, funds will also be donated to victims of the Camp Fire.
The holiday home tour starts Friday and goes through Sunday. Tickets are $30 in advance. They can be purchased online or at Sacred Heart School the day of the event.

Holiday Home Tours are challenging to produce, requiring many volunteers and months to plan and execute. They are done with love as people open their homes and hearts to help raise money for special people, programs and projects. These ticketed events are often the biggest fundraising effort for clubs or nonprofit organizations.
