Pool table cloth has evolved several times over through the years. Lately, more and more attention to detail and advanced technology has taken over which benefits all of us who love playing pool. There are two pool table felt brands that stand out from all the others – Simonis and Championship felt. 

While each is built on many years of experience, there are characteristics that make them quite different. We’ll break that down, but let’s start with the general information about pool table cloth.

What is Pool Table Felt Made Of?

The majority of pool table cloth is created mainly from wool, and mixed with either nylon or polyester . The best performing table cloth is a wool and nylon combination, which is what Simonis and the best Championship models of cloth are made from. We’ll talk more about these two great brands shortly.

Pool table felt falls into two different widely known categories – “ Woolen” felt and “ Worsted” felt. Most of today’s quality cloth falls under the Worsted category.

Woolen vs. Worsted Felt – What’s the Difference?

Understanding the Woolen and Worsted distinction can be a little confusing, but we’ll make it simple.

Woolen felt is produced from the traditional, older method of twisting long and short wool fibers together while Worsted felt is formed from the more modern method of weaving wool yarn together with only the long fibers.

With Worsted felt, the short fibers are combed out previous to the cloth being finished. This results in a lighter, tighter and faster cloth that most pool players prefer playing on. Since woolen felt does not have the short fibers removed, this creates a fuzzy feel on a pool table over time, and can eventually have a negative influence on how the balls roll.

Woolen felt characteristics :

• Plays slower
• Long and short fibers twisted together
• Crate a fuzzy (nappy) finish
• Harder to clean
• Requires brushing to maintain

Worsted felt characteristics :

• Plays faster
• Long wool fibers tightly weaved in and out
• Create a smooth, thin finish
• Much easier to clean
• No brushing required

Does Pool Table Felt Color Matter?

Pool table cloth color absolutely matters, for a couple reasons:

• You want a cloth color that complements the surroundings of your pool table.
• Some people’s eyes are sensitive to certain colors – pick a color that doesn’t feel uncomfortable to look at.

You want a felt color that you’ll be comfortable with for a long time. It would be a bit annoying playing on a pool table that you don’t like the look of.

How Many Pool Table Felt Colors Are There?

There are up to around 30 colors of pool table cloth available to choose from , but it will depend on what brand you go with. Simonis states that they have 28 colors available, and it depends on what model of cloth you choose. According to Championship , they have 29 colors available.

There won’t be any shortage of colors if that’s what you care about most when picking your cloth.

Should You Match Chalk Color and Pool Table Cloth?

Yes, you should always try to match your pool table chalk with your pool table color. This makes it easier to keep your pool table as clean as possible for as long as possible.

Traditionally, the most common pool table felt color is green, and the most common chalk color is blue. Those colors are similar enough that the chalk won’t make your table look too messy, as long as you clean your table every so often.

You’ll want to make sure your table color and chalk color don’t contrast too much. Having a bunch of blue or red chalk marks on a tan table, for example, will create a messy situation.

If you clean your table, any temporary chalk stains won’t damage the table, but can create issues long term if the chalk never gets removed from the felt.

Best and Worst Pool Table Felt Colors

Green and tournament blue pool table cloth are widely known to be the best, and most common colors, for good reason. Green is right in the middle of the color spectrum, and blue isn’t very far off. This makes these colors much easier on the retina of our eyes.

Bright colored cloth or extremely dark colors are the worst options for most tables. A brighter red is likely one of the worst felt colors because red is at the end of the color spectrum. It’s more intense, and strains the eye. In addition, any bright color is going to reflect more light in all directions, which means even more discomfort when looking down at the table.

While we can make recommendations on felt color for your table, it ultimately depends on personal preference.

Someone who uses their pool table more for eye candy can likely get away with using a felt color that’s not as common. For those who play a lot, it would be best to use green or blue.

The Best Two Pool Table Felt Brands

Now to the good part – some more specifics about a couple of the best felt options on the market: Simonis and Championship.

Simonis table cloth is a staple of the billiards world, and has been around since the 1600s. It’s widely regarded as the best pool table felt for several reasons:

• High standards for accuracy, consistency and durability
• Over three centuries of cloth-making experience
• Environmentally responsible
• High brand loyalty

All Simonis cloth options are worsted constructed. As a reminder, worsted felt is made using only long fibers, making for a less fuzzy surface.

Simonis prides themselves in their green manufacturing practices which makes for a low environmental impact – something most of us can probably get behind. Simonis cloth provides a true roll and is very smooth, thanks to the finely combed wool yarn used.

The two most popular models of Simonis felt are the 860 and the 760 models. The 860 has a HR (high resistance) variation as well that is just a bit faster than the standard 860. Simonis 860 felt was originally developed for 9-ball and has a slightly slower speed than the 760 blend, due to the higher wool content. The wool characteristics, combined with the high thread count helps create a cloth that won’t burn balls or wear out quickly. The 860 is nap-free and doesn’t shed threads either! Available in 28 colors and 66-inch or 78-inch widths, the Simonis 860 offers more options and an incredible value for beginner or seasoned pool players.

Simonis 760 has the same characteristics as the 860, just with a slightly lower wool content. Due to this fact, the 760 plays slightly faster, and you don’t have to pay extra for more speed! This felt is the same price as the 860 version and is available in 15 colors. Simonis also offers a 760 SR line that is sold exclusively through Olhausen dealers only (U.S. and Canada). The SR line is stain-resistant and available in 12 colors.

Championship

Championship table cloth has a great reputation for being one of the top cloths available. It offers premium performance at a fairly affordable price, and prides itself on several key highlights:

• Worsted and Woolen options
• Silver Cup chalk included with every pre-cut
• No hidden defects
• Fabrics that are backed or unbacked
• No seams in backing
• 66-inch widths

As mentioned above, they offer Worsted and Woolen models of cloth, but we will discuss the two worsted cloths we see on tables most often: Tour Edition and Pro-Am .

Tour Edition felt is Championship’s highest quality tournament grade fabric. It is considered one of the fastest pool table fabrics available and has divot-resisting characteristics to ensure top notch performance and longevity. The Tour Edition comes pre-cut, and works great for all types of tables – tournament tables, home tables, or even coin operated tables. This cloth is a 70/30 wool/nylon blend which stretches easier than other respected worsted cloth options, making it a breeze to install.

Tour Edition cloth price : $214 (7ft) to $311 (9ft)

Pro-Am felt is very similar to Championship’s Tour Edition felt, but is a bit lighter in weight. It is a 2-ply construction and is another long-lasting option from Championship. This cloth is made for tournament, commercial and personal use. It is also pre-cut for 7ft, 8ft, or 9ft pool tables. Which is Better – Simonis or Championship?

Most experienced players choose Simonis over Championship because the company simply has centuries of experience, and their cloth typically lasts longer than Championship.

That said, both felt options are great.

You will likely see Championship felt being affected faster by things like climate or humidity.

Simonis has faster cloth , and it is generally understood that playing on fast tables will help create a more consistent stroke and make players more skilled in the long run. A faster cloth also means less effort is required when trying to get the cue ball to spin.

Championship cloth may be a great option for someone who owns a pool hall or more public establishment that attracts lots of beginner pool players. They would likely enjoy playing on slightly slower tables, and would probably be more familiar with that speed anyway.

If you have ever bought a billiard cloth, you would know the Simonis and Championship brands. These big names have produced some of the best clothes for a billiard table. You would find their clothes in different styles and colors on major tournament tables. 

But what happens when you have a Simonis vs. Championship cloth comparison?

Simonis vs. Championship cloth war has been going on for a long time. Each brand has tried to outdo the other in durability, speed, and brand reputation . Championship billiard clothes are made to combine effectiveness and affordability.

The Mexico-based brand has different types of billiard clothes for customers, depending on what they need. The Tour edition is considered as their most refined production. 

You get to make your choice between worsted and woolen billiard clothes with this brand. Despite using a third party in producing their clothes, the quality has been maintained for years.

You can choose any of their specialty clothes or worsted edition, and you won’t go wrong. 

In their adverts, Championship has often compared themselves to the Simonis brand and proclaimed their brand is better than Simonis. Simonis has taken these adverts up in court with claims not substantiated in any proof or tests. 

With all this drama, it might become hard for you as an end-user to pick one of the clothes for your pool table at home. We have made a comparison of the Simonis vs. Championship cloth to help you make a choice.

It might be hard to compare all the different types of clothes from each of the brands. But, we can select and compare some of the most used styles of clothes by both brands. 

We will be comparing the Simonis 860 & 760 and Championship Tour and Saturn II Edition. The comparison would be based on the style, blend, speed, nap, and weight of each of these cloth types.

Simonis 760 is made with 70% wool and 30% nylon, a different blend from the 75% wool and 25% nylon you will get from a Championship Saturn II cloth. The weight is also quite different, with Simonis 760 on the heavier side at 21oz to the Championship Saturn II’s 19oz. 

These two clothes are also different in their finishing. Simonis brand keeps to its worsted woolen felt, but the Championship cloth is a woolen material. One advantage to the woolen make is that the cloth stretches more during installation, a feature worsted felt doesn’t have.

Championship cloth is treated with Dupont Teflon, which makes it resistant to stains. Simonis makes their worsted cloth tightly woven to keep moisture and dust out. You should ensure that you don’t clean the Championship cloth with hydrochloric acid. It would spoil the cloth.

Simonis has the advantage over the Championship cloth in terms of speed, though. Its worsted felt allows for faster plays than you can ever hope to get on the Championship cloth. However, this Championship cloth does better than most woolen cloth. 

If you are going for affordable, though, the Championship cloth would be your best choice. However, you would get more in terms of speed from the Simonis brand.

Simonis 860 and Championship 3030 Tour Edition billiard cloths are high-tier clothes that you will see used in tournaments. So, we can compare both. These two are both worsted fabrics but with different blends. 

Simonis 860 has 90% wool and 10% nylon compared to the Champion 3030’s blend of 70% wool and 30% nylon. The heavier blend of wool in the 860 makes it a slower table cloth than the 3030. However, this combination makes it more resistant to ball burns. 

The Simonis cloth is the heavier material with 27oz and Championship cloth weighing 24oz. Simonis designed its cloth for the 9-ball, but you can also use it for 7 and 8-ball tables. The Championship cloth also works perfectly for 8 and 9-ball.

Both of these clothes were built with durability in mind. But, Simonis cloth, with its heavier wool content, is more likely to last longer. However, the Championship 3030 would play faster than the 860 cloth. 

You should also find an expert to install for you if you were going for the 860 cloth. It does not stretch, which usually leads to overcutting when done by a beginner. With the right maintenance, you would enjoy the choice of any of these two clothes.

Unless you are being paid by one of the brands to promote, you don’t have to get into the Simonis and Championship clothes war. Take your time to look for the brand and cloth style that is most suitable for your needs. Use the comparison above to make your choice.

Simonis 860 cloth vs Championship Tour

I have a 8 ft. table that came with standard Championship cloth. After 8 years of masse's, jumping balls and burn marks I want to recover the table and upgrade to a better cloth. Everyone totes about the Simonis 860 being the "choice of champions" but how does it fare with say the Championship Tour (CT) cloth? The (CT) is 24 oz. and is said to be more durable than simonis and shows less "tiger marks". What's the overall opinion out there? BTW, I'm and intermediate player that plays often and is looking to go to the next level.

If you want to make it to the next level, consider whether your game needs work on subtly and defense or on power and position. For the former you want a faster cloth, for the later you want a slower cloth.

A really fast cloth (like simonis 300 billiards cloth) will make you work on the lowest power range. What would have only moved a few inches on slow fuzzy felt will traves 10s of feet on 300. Learinng how to play on felt this fast requires you to develop precise energy control so you can roll the cue ball 1/2 a diamond on comand. The same energy shor on slow fuzy felt might not even get out of the self inflicted hole the ball makes in the felt due to its own weight (slight exageration). But most of us agree that felt this fast is too fast basically because pool is NOT biliards (with no disrespect intended or implied) and our tables are not 10 feet long.The (relatively) recent championships at the Mohegan Sun were run on billiards cloth. This has been fun to watch as the balls just roll and roll and roll. And I bet the pros had a little trouble adjusting in the modicum of practice time alloted.

This leaves the choice of 760 or 860. 760 is faster, and if you hometable is for practice, and you want to bring up the level of your game in the low power end of the shooting spectrum, then 760 could be advised. Now if you want to play on this table, or if the table is less than 9 feet in length, you might sericously want to consider 860.

I am having an 8 foot table (3 weeks from now) be delivered with 760--because I DO want to work on the low power end of my game (defense, curves, speed control). And, for full disclosure, to give me an advantage when friends drop by that are not use to a table this fast. {he he he}

In general, 860 is recommended for general use on 7 and 8, and 8.5 tables while either 860 or 760 is recommended on 9 footers. 760 or a 9 footer has rather similar distance traveled characteristics (in diamonds) as 860 on an 8 footer and medium slow felt on a 7 footer.

Now, conversely, if your game need serious work on (the control of) hitting balls hard you should be looking for dead slow fuzy felt and bang away.

I recently recovered my 9 ft Olio pool table with Championship tour edition 3030 cloth. I had Simonis 860 on it for 2 years. I like the Championship cloth better. It is 24 oz instead of the Simonis 21 oz. Championship cloth stretches on the table better and plays faster than Simonis. The Championship cloth is a little tougher to put on the rail corner pockets because it is a little heaver, but that might be just me as I did it myself. The BCA likes it and I have read that it is the most sold cloth in the industry. They have 3 or 4 variations of quality and price. Simonis just had a price increase to $251 for a 9 ft table and the Championship Tour cloth is $208. (for the DIY people)

Standard cloth is included with any table we sell, and is intended for recreational play. The cloth is susceptible to spills and stains. Since pilling will occur over time, standard cloth will need occasional brushing to remove the fuzz/loose fibers.

The next step up is cloth that is soaked in Teflon TM solution (vs. just sprayed on top) that makes it resistant to spills and stains. If a spill does occur, the liquid beads up, so it’s much easier to clean up. This cloth also needs regular brushing to remove fuzz/loose fibers.

Developed especially for 9-Ball. Combed worsted wool, high thread count and higher wool content assure long lasting wear and reduced ball burning. It is nap-free, and will not pill, fluff or shed. Simonis® 860 HR™ Simonis 860 HR™ (High Resistance). This is a true hybrid, worsted. It is the most durable commercial grade billiard cloth available. Heavier than 760, napless and tough as nails.How fast do you want the table to play ?

Simonis 860         – most commonly used Simonis Cloth, a good combination of longevity and speed.

Simonis  760         – the fastest pool cloth Simonis makes … a bit lighter weight than 860 and popular for Tournaments.

Simonis 760™

Simonis 760™ is the fastest Simonis cloth for pool tables and can also be found on snooker tables when the players want to play ‘golf’ and where a color other than English green or yellow-green is desired.

It is a 70% wool / 30% nylon blend that is sometimes used for Competitive Pool Tournament Play. This cloth maintains its speed and accuracy over time and does not change the ball roll as it ages . The higher speed is great for Bank Pool, Straight pool, and one pocket as well as traditional 8- and 9-ball .

It is slightly faster than Simonis 860™, although the higher wool content of 860 will combat ball burns better over time. It is suggested you pair your Simonis cloth with a set of Aramith Belgian phenolic pool balls , which in conjunction with keeping them clean, will cut back on friction burns to the cloth surface. Aramith balls are pure phenolic and have the hardest composition and heat resistance compared to other balls with lower percentage phenolic or polyester (non-phenolic balls), which will degrade quickly over time.

Residue on balls can create friction that can burn or mark the surface of the cloth. While Aramith phenolic balls can burn the cloth surface, polyester balls leave some polyester behind. Keep your Aramith balls clean – to protect the cloth, and achieve the best performance and appearance over time.

The combed worsted wool and high thread count assure long-lasting wear.

Simonis 860™

Simonis 860™ was developed especially for 9-ball and has proven to be well suited for home use and the most popular color selection. Also excellent for ball action and traditional 8-ball. It is a 90% wool, 10% nylon blend .

While the speed is slightly slower than 760, 860 cloth has proven to combat ball burns better than 760 over time due to its high wool content. The combed worsted wool and high thread count assure long-lasting wear.

Simonis 860HR™ (High Resistant) has a speed between 760 and 860 blends ( 2 nd fastest Simonis pool cloth-slightly ahead of Simonis 860), is a 70% wool and 30% nylon content (same as the 760 blend) but heavier than the 760 for increased durability .

860HR has the same thread count as 860, with the shaving process changed slightly to leave a surface that is more or less a 100 % wool surface on the cloth, which is why the cloth doesn’t show marks/ball burns as much as 760 might.

Because of the weight, blend, and finishing of this cloth, the outcome gives the cloth commercial-grade durability and professional quality performance and accuracy while resisting the abuse of a high-use environment.

It's time to recover my home table. I've had a lot of people tell me to save my money and buy the championship mercury ultra cloth. It plays as good and lasts longer. I do tend to find simonis is to fast for bar box tables. Any opinions out there. I mean even if they play close I'll save my 100 bucks and just by the championship? Any opinions out there?

I would like to preempt this by telling you to search this before anyone gets snappy with you, as this has been asked a billion times.

Championship mercury ultra cloth is what we use on all the bar tables where we play. They are Valleys with the heavy cue ball. Diamond uses simonis on all their tables but they do use the light cue ball. You get a little better ware out of the mercury and for the money its well worth it for the money you save.

Now Championship tour edtion 30/30 does play like simonis in my opinion. I think it is just about the same price though. A mechanic in our area replaced 6 bar tables in our town with Milliken cloth and is using those tables as a test to see if we like the cloth and how the cloth last. I think it plays real close to simonis, but it has only been installed for about two months. I don't know what it will play like two more months down the road so I am not suggesting to go out and get it, but it may be an option for you. I am not too sure what the price difference is though so it may not be worth the chance. Finally, I know that in todays economy a $100 bill is not something that is just thrown around. But I do believe in if a company is putting out a good product and is sponsoring/discounting back to the players and business owners within the industry, then they would get my business. I bought Electric Blue Championship 3030 tournament Edition for my table to save a few bucks. I like Simonis but after buying the 3030, I'll always buy it. I clean my table and pool balls regularly and it still plays and looks new. I've had it about 8 months now with alot of play. I think the Championship 3030 is great. Ron

Well I should have specified this also, Bar tables in our area are all 4X8's and not the 7' tables like every else. I don't know why that is, but that is how the Pacific Northwest is.
