Bremerhaven is a major North Sea port and the cruise port to Bremen City (riverport). Bremerhaven is located on the east side of Weser River Estuary (Germany's North Sea / Baltic Sea coast).
The seaport was established in 1827 as cargo port for Freie Hansestadt Bremen (Free Hanseatic City of Bremen / Germany's smallest state) to the south (located approx 50 km / 30 mi downstream Weser River). Train travel time from Bremerhaven to Hamburg is 1 hour 45 min. Road distance (via highways A1 and A27) is 95 km (59 mi).
Port Bremerhaven (locode DEBRV) is ranked the world's 16th-largest and Europe's 4th-largest containership port - with annual capacity 5+ million TEU-containers. The Port's annual Ro-Ro traffic includes 1,35+ million new cars (imported and exported), which is surpassed only by Rotterdam Holland .
A new Panamax-sized lock was opened in 2011, replacing the 1897-built Kaiserschleuse - back then world's biggest lock.
Bremerhaven is currently ranked Europe's third-largest car export port - after Zeebrugge Belgium and Emden Germany .
In 2017, for the first time Costa Cruises used Bremerhaven as homeport (departures on roundtrip itineraries) for Costa Magica , with scheduled 11 partial turnarounds. Other major cruise companies homeporting here include TUI , Phoenix Reisen , Transocean Tours.
In 2018, the cruise port reported a record season with handled 111 ship calls and around 230,000 passengers, which was 45% increase over 2017. Maiden calls in 2018 included the liners Norwegian Bliss , Mein Schiff 1 , AIDAnova , Marella Discovery , Costa Mediterranea , Seabourn Ovation , Azamara Journey . In 2018, the port introduced new "cruise parking" packages, with optional pre-booking and luggage collection service from the vehicle. For 2019, the port had scheduled 121 ship calls with ~260,000 cruise tourists (~230 of whom booked on turnarounds/roundtrips).
As cruise port, Bremerhaven has total quay length 1 km and capacity to berth vessels with LOA length 350 m (1148 ft) and max draft 10 m (33 ft). The seaport has modern passenger terminal (Columbus Cruise Center) and good infrastructure with connections to highways and railways.
In 2022, Bremerhaven Cruise Port handled 230,000+ passengers, of whom ~90% homeport/turnaround.
In September 2023, GPH-Global Ports Holding BV (UK-based company, the world's largest cruise port operator) signed a 10-year port concession agreement (effective January 2025, with an optional 5-year extension/through 2040) with Bremenports GmbH & Co KG (representing Bremen City) for the operational management of Columbusbahnhof Bremerhaven Cruise Terminal.
Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven shipyard
Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH (1863-founded) is a shipyard used mainly for drydock repairs, ship refits/reconstructions and regularly scheduled maintenance works.
In 2015, GHK/Genting Hong Kong Ltd (1993-founded/2022-defunct Malaysian holding) purchased a 70% stake in Lloyd Werft, while having on order a total of 10 cruise vessels with the shipbuilder. In April 2016, GHK established the Lloyd Werft Group after purchasing Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven's remaining 30% and acquiring full ownership of Lloyd Werft Wismar , Lloyd Werft Warnemunde , and Lloyd Werft Stralsund .
Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven currently employs ~500 workers. The yard covers an area of approx 0,26 km2 (~0,1 mi2 / ~2,8 million ft2) and has a total of 11 drydocks.
Bremerhaven shipyard's facilities can accommodate vessels with max draft 11,5 m (37 ft).
Bremerhaven cruise terminal
Cruise ships in Port Bremerhaven dock at the passenger terminal "Columbus Cruise Center". Located just 2 km (1,2 mi) from downtown, this is one of world's most modern and advanced cruise terminals. In 2020 starts the EUR 80 million cruise pier renovation project (scheduled completion in 2024), by which the docking facility will be expanded to accommodate more large-sized vessels.
Bremerhaven Bus (bus line) offers direct shuttle transfers between the port's train station and the cruise ship terminal (~10 min drive). Bus schedules are according to the cruise ship scheduled arrivals/departures times. At cruise terminal's main entrance there is a taxi rank. Taxi ride to the city is about 5 min. Road signs to the terminal have written "Kreuzfahrt Terminal". Bremerhaven Airport is about 15 min from the passenger terminal.

Guided tour of Bremen
Departure with your guide to visit the historic center of this Hanseatic city. One of the oldest German maritime cities, Bremen was granted the right to hold market as early as 965 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1358. It became a Free Imperial City in 1646 and established a direct commercial relationship with the USA in 1783. Traditionally, the city is known for its cotton and coffee trade and forms, together with its Bremerhaven fore-port, an incredibly unified Land. Our visit will start with the working-class district of Schnoor , located on the banks of the Weser River. This is the oldest district in Bremen and its narrow streets filled with small half-timbered houses and a big Church form a charming ensemble. The neighborhood owes its name to old handicrafts associated with shipping, and the alleys between the houses were often associated with occupations or objects. There was an area in which ropes and cables were produced, giving the district its name (string = Schnoor). We'll continue towards Marktplatz where you'll get to see St Peter's Cathedral and the wonderful City Hall in Weser Renaissance style. Also standing on Marktplatz is the 1404 statue of Roland, protector of the city, the oldest in Germany. Bremen is also famous for another statue located right behind the City Hall - the Town Musicians of Bremen . The statue depicts a donkey, a dog, a cat and a rooster with respect to the Brothers Grimm's fairy tale. Don't forget to make a wish! Our visit ends after a walk down the Böttcherstrasse, a street famous for its unusual architectural ensemble belonging to a variant of the expressionist style. We'll pass the entrance gate with its impressive golden fresco depicting the Lichtbringer, Bringer of Light. Free time and return on board.

MS Bremen ms-bremen
Bremen was launched in 1990 and re-fitted in 1993. Operated by Hapag-Lloyd Expedition Cruises, she can accommodate up to 164 passengers across 6 decks. The cruises aboard Bremen and Hanseatic, her sister ship, focus on exploration of their destinations, and are best suited to German-speaking passengers who consider themselves explorers. Thanks to her good manoeuvrability, she can reach less accessible destinations, such as the polar region.
Accommodation
Bremen offers two different types of accommodation, Suites and Outside Cabins. While the furnishings are thoroughly comfortable, the staff is personal and attentive – the cabin service team is at your disposal from 7am-10pm every day and will gladly serve breakfast or a selection of dishes as desired. And while you are reading a good book or getting into the mood for the next destination with the forward-view camera, refreshing beverages are at your fingertips in the mini bar, which is replenished on a daily basis – free of charge, as a matter of course. Could there be a more beautiful home for the duration of an expedition? Plenty of space for your belongings and a well-equipped mini bar which is replenished free of charge every day round off the comfort of your cabin. Whether you fancy a night cap at the end of an eventful expedition day or an enthralling bedtime read – our 24-hour cabin service staff will be more than happy to fulfil your little and big wishes. Very personal, very individual – only an expedition aboard the BREMEN can be this comfortable.
Food & Drink
Enjoy diverse tastes against a backdrop of the most beautiful expedition regions: be it a relaxed breakfast under the open sky, a hearty BBQ lunch on the Lido Deck or dinner in the restaurant with an exquisite menu recommendation.

Bremer River Cruise
We've been going to do it for years, so yesterday we did the Bremer River Cruise on the MV 'Lady Brisbane' (arranged through Brisbane Cruises) - but it's not really a "Bremer River cruise" which is a little disappointing. I had thought we'd get all the way to Ipswich, but all the cruise does is go up the Brisbane River to the mouth of the Bremer, then come back - I'd guess about 50km distance each way. Having noted my disappointment, what we did do was very relaxing & quite pleasant, seeing a long section of the main river we live near from a different perspective. The cruise lasts about 5½ to 6 hours and it's only on about 4 times each year when the tide is very high. Morning & afternoon teas and a bar-b-q lunch are served, plus drinks - but if you have special dietary requirements make sure you advise the operators well in advance (& I'm sure they'll accommodate where possible). Staff were very pleasant and met our needs.
Good value, interesting cruises provided by this family owned and operated company. The Lady Brisbane is a traditional Bulimba built vessel by Millcraft and is a seaworthy, comfortable craft which is skippered by knowledgeable and qualified crew. We did the August Bremer River Junction cruise; which takes about 6 hours. The trip includes morning and afternoon tea and a yummy BBQ lunch for a total cost of $65 each, and in my opinion, this is a value deal . We now intend to go on some more of their Moreton Bay cruises.
We have just been cruising up to the Bremer River, a trip that only happens a couple of times a year due to tidal issues. What a delightful cruise. We saw parts of Brisbane from the river that we never knew existed and were surprised at how many homes have cultivated splendid gardens that spill down the hills onto the waterfront. The boat was very comfortable despite light rain, which did nothing to spoil our trip and the lunch was well managed. The crew were extremely helpful and the captain's commentary was of great interest. If you want to see a part of Brisbane on one of the oldest River systems in the world, don't miss this cruise
Thank you Carol, we appreciate your comments. We strive to continue our service, and happy customers give us great job satisfaction.
Our cruise down the Brisbane River on a Mississipp1-style paddle steamer lasted about two hours and included a three-course lunch. The food was very good - tasty and nicely prepared - and the cruise itself was pleasant enough although the Brisbane River does not appear to have a lot to offer scenically other than a proliferation of high rise blocks when one is in the city centre. The crew were friendly and efficient, as were the driver and guide from Kangaroo Travel who escorted the tour from our ship's berth to the river cruise wharf, during which journey the opportunity was taken to provide an interesting city tour on the outward leg and a quick trip to Mount Coot-tha on the return. All-in-all, this was a nice relaxing way to pass an afternoon.
Another great day out for 35 members of the Mudgeeraba Bridge Club!! Nothing was too much trouble for the crew of the Lady Brisbane. Food was good, commentary informative and friendly, and although this cruise was fully booked there was plenty of room to move around. Drinks were also reasonably priced!! The only downside of the day was the torrential rain which hit us as we came into the wharf. The crew braved the rain without protection to escort our more elderly members to the waiting coaches. --- I just hope none of them caught cold, as they were soaked! I will not be surprised if this becomes an annual function for our Club.
Thank you for taking the time to write this review. It's so rewarding to receive positive feedback particularly when the crew work so hard preparing beforehand and on the actual day of the cruise. We look forward to welcoming you on board in the future. You were all great passengers who enjoy life. All the very best to your Club.
Fabulous... The boat is a beautiful lady built in 1972, the crew wonderful, friendly, helpful and worked their butts off preparing our morning tea, BBQ lunch and afternoon tea and manning the bar as well as deck hand duties. The Captain lovely, very informative commentary and a very experienced Captain. I recommend this cruise, they go Bris to GC as well, to everyone who enjoys being on a beautiful boat cruising the broad water.
Thank you very much Valerie R, We love happy passengers, we enjoy our work and you give us job satisfaction. Cheers, Captain Jim Kelly.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond
Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest
Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.
Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.
While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.
What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?
The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.
Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?
The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.
Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.
Is a Danube river cruise worth it?
Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.
On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.
What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?
One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).
Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.
Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.
And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.
Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?
Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.
How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?
Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.
Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.

7-Nights CRUISE ON BOARD OF THE SWISS RUBY
Crime Cruise to Bremen
Not for the faint-hearted: our crime cruises on the SWISS RUBY. While exciting readings by well-known authors pose the tantalizing question "Who's done it?" in the evening, you will embark on your own search for criminal clues during the shore excursions. In Potsdam, a spy at the royal court of Frederick William I "awaits" you, in Rothenburg, the Ripper of Magdeburg, in addition, medieval murders in Brunswick and a witch hunt in Minden. But of course, in addition to the excitement, relaxation on board is not neglected. The "best crew in the world" will spoil you with gourmet menus and exquisite wines, which you can enjoy easily and at any time thanks to VIVA All-Inclusive at no extra cost. It will just have its reasons why our crime cruises on the SWISS RUBY now take place in the third year. Look forward to it.
