Hurricane tracker, severe weather, radar & maps, news & features, winter center, news / hurricane, september surge: tropical activity increasing in caribbean, atlantic and gulf.

A broad but budding area of showers and thunderstorms in the central Atlantic could develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm as it drifts into the Caribbean this week. Other areas are being watched as well.

There are now 4 separate areas of tropical concern from the west coast of Africa to the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical development is most likely in the Caribbean during the first week of September, where a broad zone of showers and thunderstorms that AccuWeather meteorologists have been tracking since mid-August is focused.

There are other zones the forecasting team is monitoring as well, including the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, waters just of the United States Atlantic coast and a feature pushing off the coast of Africa.

The area in the south-central Atlantic contains multiple batches of showers and thunderstorms that extend for close to 1,000 miles.

On Thursday, AccuWeather raised the tropical development risk of the upcoming Caribbean feature to a medium level.

"We expect that at least one feature will take hold within the moisture zone in the coming days," AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

Along and ahead of the zone of showers and thunderstorms, wind shear is low, and the water is sufficiently warm to foster tropical development.

Wind shear is associated with breezes in the atmosphere that blow from one direction or change direction abruptly. When these breezes are strong, wind shear is strong and can hinder tropical development.

In order for a tropical depression to be declared by the National Hurricane Center, there must be complete circulation with maximum sustained winds of 38 mph or less. Usually, showers and thunderstorms cluster near a center of circulation on satellite images and radar when a tropical depression is about to form.

"On Friday morning, there were as many as five clusters of thunderstorms within the moist plume, but none showed any evidence of a circulation," Rayno said.

Regardless of organization, rounds of drenching showers and gusty thunderstorms will move slowly westward across portions of the Leeward and Windward islands that make up the Lesser Antilles on the eastern edge of the Caribbean Sea.

The greatest concentration of the downpours will be over the Windwards.

The downpours will bring needed rainfall to areas but may also trigger flash flooding in extreme cases. Several inches of rain may pour down in some locations through early this week. Parts of the Windwards were still recovering from extensive damage from Hurricane Beryl earlier this summer and may still be experiencing damaged infrastructure.

Early in July, rapidly strengthening Hurricane Beryl blasted Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines in the Windwards with ferocious winds, torrential rain and storm surge. With 165-mph winds at peak intensity, Beryl became the strongest July hurricane on record and the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record. Beryl is associated with dozens of fatalities and billions of dollars in damage from the Caribbean to the United States.

"Once this broad feature gets into the Caribbean, the chances of development will likely increase substantially," Rayno said, "We will likely have a named system--a tropical storm--in there."

The next name on the list of tropical storms for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is Francine .

There is a wide-ranging area where a tropical storm or hurricane might track after departing the Caribbean during the weekend after Labor Day. Steering breezes might continue to guide the system westward into Central America and southeastern Mexico during the second week of September. In another scenario, which poses a potential direct threat to the U.S., steering breezes and interactions with the jet stream could pull a tropical storm or hurricane into the Gulf of Mexico.

It is possible that more than one feature may organize in the broad zone of showers and thunderstorms.

AccuWeather meteorologists are also monitoring a separate area in the Atlantic for tropical development.

As a batch of thunderstorms moves well off the coast of Africa later this week and into the weekend, a tropical storm may form over the middle of the ocean. Anticipated steering winds would keep this feature away from land.

Meanwhile, on the doorstep of the U.S., there are two additional areas being monitored over the next week. One area is in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico over the holiday weekend. It has been dubbed by AccuWeather meteorologists as a tropical rainstorm to raise attention to its impacts of heavy rain, possible flooding and perhaps locally gusty winds in parts of Texas and Louisiana . There is a low chance this rainstorm will become a tropical depression near the Gulf Coast.

Another area that will be watched closely for development later this week is just off the Atlantic coast of the U.S.

After Francine, the following three storm names for 2024 are Gordon, Helene and Isaac.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season

AccuWeather maintains that 2024 will have a very active hurricane season with the current number of systems that have developed still on par with the historical average and the busiest part of the season just ahead. There is still a high chance that several storms may undergo rapid intensification as Beryl did.

“In a new development, AccuWeather hurricane experts now assess that 20-23 named storms are more likely than 20-25. This adjustment is fewer named storms than many other sources are predicting,” explained AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter. “The reason for this assessment is the long lull that has occurred in recent weeks when there have been no named storms during what is typically an increasingly active part of the hurricane season.”

While it is rare for an active named system not to be present during the Labor Day weekend, conditions in the Atlantic can change quickly. Busy periods, when multiple named systems will be spinning in the basin, are still anticipated, including the potential for just that over the next week to 10 days.

These Are the Most Exciting Airline Routes Launching in September

Passengers are getting new options for Lake Powell, leaf-peeping, and getting from Las Vegas to Europe.

Summer is over and airlines, like the weather, are shifting into fall mode. That means fewer leisure-oriented flights and more connections aimed at business travelers.

In Travel+Leisure ’s latest highlights of the most exciting routes launching in the month ahead, September brings more connecting options on American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. Spirit Airlines takes on low-fare behemoth Southwest Airlines in California. And European discounter Norse Atlantic has a new transatlantic option from Las Vegas.

American, Delta, and United Add Connectivity

American, Delta, and United are adding several new connecting routes this month. The additions come as airlines look to add options for business travelers as leisure travel slows down after Labor Day.

Delta is expanding its offerings at New York LaGuardia with a nonstop to Tulsa beginning September 3. It will compete with American on the route. Delta’s new flight departs New York at 5:35 p.m. daily for the three-hour-and-35-minute run to Tulsa with economy fares ranging from $193 to $448 one way.

United is adding new nonstops from its Los Angeles (LAX) and Washington Dulles hubs beginning September 26. The airline will connect LAX and St. George, Utah — the home of its regional affiliate SkyWest Airlines and a popular destination with access to Lake Powell— with one-way economy fares starting at $145 for the one-hour-and-30-minute flight that departs LAX daily at 1:30 p.m. 

From Washington, United will add thrice-daily flights to Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., with economy fares starting at $371 one way. Greenville flights depart Dulles at 8:15 a.m., 12:45 p.m., and 5:20 p.m. for the hour-and-a-half trip. The new link is part of a larger 10-route expansion of United’s Dulles hub this year aimed at increasing connecting flight options there.

American will link Chicago O’Hare and Evansville, Indiana, from September 3 as part of its effort to provide the most domestic connectivity of any U.S. airline. The route, which the airline last flew in 2022, complements American’s existing service to Evansville from Charlotte and Dallas-Fort Worth, according to Cirium Diio schedules. Flights depart Chicago at 12:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. for the roughly one-hour-and-20-minute trip. Economy fares begin at $391 one way.

JetBlue Expands in Maine Ahead of Leaf Season

JetBlue Airways, not normally one to add regional routes, lands in Maine’s North Woods this month. The airline will connect Boston with Presque Isle — a city closer to the Canadian border than Acadia National Park or Maine’s largest city, Portland — from September 5. Flights will depart Boston daily at 3 p.m. for the one-hour-and-25-minute trip north. Economy fares start at $59 one way. JetBlue will receive nearly $22 million over two years from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Essential Air Service program to operate the route. 

Cape Air Adds New York-Cape Cod Link

Regional airline Cape Air links New York JFK and its Hyannis, Mass., base on September 4. The flight replaces one by partner JetBlue that ends the day before and thus ensures continuous year-round air service between New York and Cape Cod. The flight departs New York daily at 11:55 a.m. with one-way fares starting at $261. 

Spirit Takes on Southwest in California

Discounter Spirit takes on California’s largest airline, Southwest Airlines, with new routes from Burbank to Sacramento and San Jose on September 4. Spirit’s Sacramento flights depart Burbank up to twice daily at 9:10 a.m. and around midday (the exact time depends on the day) for the one-hour-and-15-minute flight north. San Jose flights depart twice daily at 11:40 a.m. and 3:40 p.m. for the one-hour-and-five-minute trip. Airfares range from $39-49 one way on both routes.

On the other side of the country, Spirit will link Nashville and New Orleans four times a week from September 4. Flights depart Nashville at 6:05 a.m. on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays for the one-hour-and-35-minute journey. Fares range $39-67 one way.

WestJet and Norse Atlantic Add International Links

Also from Nashville, WestJet will add a new link to Winnipeg on Mondays and Fridays from September 26. Flights depart Nashville 11:10 a.m. for the three-hour-and-10-minute trip north. Fares, however, vary widely by week: deals as cheap as $88 one way in economy can be found but on some days fares spike to over $1,000 one way. 

European discounter Norse Atlantic will land in Las Vegas on September 12 with a new nonstop to London. Flights depart Sin City on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 4:45 p.m. local time and arrive at Gatwick Airport south of London at 10:35 a.m. the next day. Introductory economy fares start at $525 one way. Norse is in good company on the route with British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways already operating up to three Las Vegas-London flights a day, Cirium Diio schedules show.

The tracks were found in Africa and South America – 3,700 miles apart – and provide evidence of the last place dinosaurs were able to travel between before the two great continents split.

A team of palaeontologists have found matching dinosaur tracks in Brazil and Cameroon, two countries that are separated by around 3,700 miles of open ocean.

More than 260 footprints were discovered by the researchers, who say that the tracks belong to a type of Early Cretaceous dinosaur.

The find pinpoints where land-living dinosaurs were last able to cross between Africa and South America before the continents started to split around 140 million years ago.

Analysis of the tracks revealed that they are similar in terms of age and geological context, and almost identical in their shape.

The majority of the fossilised footprints were created by theropods – three-toe dinosaurs with hollow bones and claws on each limb – while a few were likely made by enormous, long-necked sauropods and bird-like herbivorous ornithischians, says Diana P. Vineyard, research associate at the Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas and co-author of the study .

The footprints, impressed on top of thin sandstone strata interbedded with silt and mud, were made 120 million years ago on a single supercontinent known as Gondwana, explains Louis L. Jacobs, a palaeontologist from SMU and lead author of the study.

"One of the youngest and narrowest geological connections between Africa and South America was the elbow of northeastern Brazil nestled against what is now the coast of Cameroon along the Gulf of Guinea," says Jacobs.

"The two continents were continuous along that narrow stretch, so that animals on either side of that connection could potentially move across it."

The study was published by New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in a tribute to the late palaeontologist Martin Lockley, who spent much of his career studying dinosaurs tracks and footprints.
