Mint Condition is an American band from Saint Paul, Minnesota. Having formed in 1984, they bring to the table a distinct American brand of R&B.

Mind Condition were originally signed to Perspective Records by producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in 1989, and their debut album was entitled “Meant To Be Mint” and released in 1991. They were at the forefront of the New Jack Swing scene, especially with their dance song “Are You Free”, but it wasn’t as successful as they had envisioned. They did however enjoy some major success with their balled “Breakin’ My Heart”, which stayed on the charts for 34 weeks, hiting the R&B Top 5, and the Pop Top 10. It was eventually certified Gold by the RIAA. The third single that they released “Forever In Your Eyes” was also a successful Top 10 R&B Hit.

Two years later, the band released their 2nd album “From The Mint Factory” which was released on October 5th 1993. They had success with the single “U Send Me Swingin” which peaked at #2 on the Top 40 charts reaching #14.

In September 1996, the band released the album “Of Definition of a Band” which peaked at 15 on the R&B charts, the first single on this album was the Billboard R&B smash hit single “What Kind Of Man Would I Be?” which made it to #2 on the R&B chart. Unfortunately Perspective Records were no longer but the group fortunately signed to Elektra Records in 1999, releasing their fourth full-length album, “Life’s Aquarium” which also debuted in the Top 10 at #7. It’s single, “If You Love Me, reached number 5 in the R&B charts.

The 2000s saw the band go on respected hiatuses with their families, Keri Lewis left the group to produce for other artists such as his wife, Toni Braxton. In 2005, they released “Livin’ the Luxury Brown on their independent label Caged Bird Records, it got to #1 on the Independent Album Charts. In recent years, in December 2010, Mint Condition joined Prince and an ensemble cast of R&B and Jazz musicians for his Welcome 2 America tour. They were also inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame. The group released a new album called “Music At The Speed of Life in September 2012.

Live reviews

So, what’s it like at a Mint Condition show? High energy, hard rocking, decibel defying, not knowing what to expect next, edge-of-your-seat excitement. And that’s just from the audience. Onstage, it is infectious vibes from musicians performing at the top of their game and easily --- and very convincingly --- showing everyone that they truly love what they do.

Mint Condition is an uber-talented band that is difficult to label because their music transcends any one genre. Once the lights come up, they flow effortlessly between genres like R&B, jazz, reggae, go-go, rock, etc.

Their music catalog is large enough for them to do their thing for hours— which they do to the enjoyment of their fans. They have honed their craft and performances to near-perfection. If you’ve ever been disappointed because an artist’s live performance doesn’t live up to their studio sound, that won’t be an issue with Mint. High-quality, heart-thumping, ‘eargasmic’ sound is what you will get.

There is also no shortage of fellow musicians in the audience at a Mint Condition show, from the aspiring artists to the accomplished stars, all shamelessly clamoring around the stage in awe of this multi-talented bunch. It is no wonder that Mint Condition is one of the few bands to have shared a stage with Prince!

The band often chooses intimate venues that will allow them to get close and personal with the audience, which works for me. I think this is the best way to see them, but if you favor shows hosted in larger venues with multiple acts, you’re still in luck. Mint Condition shares the roster on several festival style shows a year—the most notable being the Essence Festival in New Orleans. Many of their shows host standing room only areas near the stage so you can let loose and sync movement with sound in a demonstration of pure joy. The more you groove, the harder they jam.

Ok, what are you waiting for? With the possible exception of those festival style shows, Mint Condition keeps ticket prices reasonable. So get your ticket and experience a taste of Mint.

Every Mint Condition Concert is a different wonderful experience. The band was on point as usual and Stokely was simply amazing. His vocals astonish me every time I see him in concert. I love the way he gets the audience to sing along even though we are no where close to being on key...lol. And the horn solo...OMG!! That was amazing. My favorite part of the concert is always when they perform. My favorite song "Pretty Brown Eyes". It's always the highlight of my experience. I can't wait for the new album on Oct. 16th.

The concert it self was awesome.Mint Condition put on a great show. They are so talented and they sound great. I just didn't care for the accommodation for the out door venue at ballpark village. They could at least let us bring chairs in. Instead we had to stand the whole time. After Dru Hill come I want be attending anymore concerts at ballpark village. I already have tickets other than that I wouldn't be going. But thumbs up to Mint Condition for a job well done and I thank them for honoring Prince❤️.

MC is amazing. They sound incredible still after all these years! Stokely gives his all vocally and last night was another exceptional performance. I only wish it was longer. Time just flew by. MC songs were done to perfection, but I especially loved the funk homage and special tribute to Prince. Their rendition of "She's always in my hair" was really special, especially at the Fox Theatre, given it was where Prince last performed. Can't wait to see them again...hope they get back here soon!

Me and my babe went to this event, and we had a great time!! Front row center seats, right where they were making the music happen. Mint Condition is definitely "The Greatest Band Of Our Time"!! One of my most favorite groups.

I loved the tribute to Prince! They took me back to my school days.

The after event meet and great was not so good. They rushed you through as if you were cattle, which was a little disappointing, but no biggie. They gave a great show.

For years my mom has been talking about going to see Mint Condition. So when we saw that they were coming to Sound Board in Detroit we didn't waste any time purchasing tickets. Unfortunately my mother wasn't able to go, but the show was so AMAZING that I will be driving her to Ohio the first week of December to see them. Mint Condition are true performers and I enjoyed every minute of the show.

Great show, incredible musicianship. Mint Condition were exceptional. The Fillmore has a great intimate setting which helps the atmosphere and increases the already great performance of Mint Condition. Terrific performance.

Great show. It was hot outside but well worth it. Would love to see them again soon. The set that they played was timed just right. I needed to get some shade. I hope that they get a gig close at an inside venue.

Mint Condition Tour Dates and Upcoming Concerts

Frequently asked questions about mint condition, is mint condition on tour.

Mint Condition

2011 was a banner year for R&B’s hottest band, Mint Condition, who celebrated their 20th anniversary. Their album 7… was critically hailed, featuring a top ten hit (“Not My Daddy” with Kelly Price which earned two Grammy nominations) and two top 20 singles (“Caught My Eye” and “Walk On”). Jet Magazine called 7… “The kind of CD you can put on and play all the way through, and The Philadelphia Inquirer raved “This is what honest, open, mature soul sounds like. Pay attention!” Mint Condition was also tapped to appear on Prince’s Welcome 2 America tour and they were selected as the house band for TV One’s Way Black When. Mint Condition has released seven studio albums that have been stretched out during their career.

Their fans will be elated that their new CD, MUSIC @ THE SPEED OF LIFE, will arrive in September 2012, just a year after 7….The new album’s vibe and feel call to mind Mint Condition’s timeless breakthrough hits, while at the same time showcases their incomparable chops. Their soulful anthems, serious grooves and sublime songwriting draw upon the great R&B band tradition ignited by Earth Wind & Fire, The Meters, Kool & the Gang, War and others. Mint Condition is truly the only band in R&B upholding this history and pushing it forward into a new era. They are, without a doubt, the greatest self-contained R&B band of our time. Mint Condition has garnered a devoted following and cultivated a genuine connection with their audience. The band reflects, “We believe by staying true you become vulnerable in many ways and people feel that, whether it’s joy, love or pain, it comes across in the music and people embrace that!”

The members of Mint Condition met as teenagers growing up in the Twin Cities—Minneapolis-St. Paul — amidst a thriving music scene energized by Prince, The Time, Jam & Lewis, The Replacements, Soul Asylum and many other artists. Keyboardists Lawrence El and Keri Lewis, guitarist O’Dell, keyboardist/saxophonist Jef, drummer/vocalist Stokley, and bass player Ricky came together in the performing arts program at Central High School. Playing together in different combinations led to them forming Mint Condition; a gig at the famed First Avenue Club in 1989 caught the attention of super-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, formerly of The Time, and they were signed to Jam & Lewis’ Perspective Records. MEANT TO BE MINT, their debut album, was released in 1991. Their breakthrough was “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes),” which has become one of the classic R&B ballads of our time, hitting #3 on the R&B charts and #6 on the Pop charts, with the follow-up “Forever In Your Eyes” hitting #7 on R&B charts. Mint Condition was established as a gold-selling act. Further hit singles and albums followed, sych as “U Send Me Swingin’” off the album FROM THE MINT FACTORY and “What Kind Of Man Would I Be” from DEFINITION OF A BAND.

After Perspective Records folded, Mint Condition signed with Elektra, delivering more hits with “If You Love Me” and “Is This Pain Our Pleasure” from the album LIFE’S AQUARIUM. In the early 2000s the group took a break from their relentless recording and touring schedule. They resumed as a quintet with only keyboard player Keri Lewis absent, releasing a new album, LIVING THE LUXURY BROWN, on their own Caged Bird label in 2005, hitting again with “I’m Ready.” Their high-energy live performance was captured with the release of LIVE AT THE 9:30 CLUB and then 2008′s E-LIFE yielded another hit with “Nothing Left To Say.” MUSIC @ THE SPEED OF LIFE follows 2011’s 7… . Mint Condition shares about their newest effort, “Life was our inspiration; fast-paced, multifaceted, adventurous and ever-changing. Our music is drawn from various sources, and the lyrics speak to the hard knocks as well as the triumphs of life.”

Stokley

Between crisscrossing the country on tour with Prince ’s The Revolution, Stokley released his first solo album, Introducing Stokley . So who is Stokley?

For the uninitiated, Stokley (full name: Stokley Williams) is the lead singer for another equally long-running R&B band from Prince’s Twin Cities stomping ground: Mint Condition . Having fronted such ‘‘90s hits as “Breakin’ My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes),” “What Kind of Man Would I Be” and “U Send Me Swingin’,” as well as the more recent “Not My Daddy” featuring Kelly Price , Stokley is now savoring his own first top five single with “Level.” His midtempo tribute to a significant other rises No. 5 to 4 on Billboard ’s Adult R&B tally for the week of July 22.

The revolution's wendy melvoin reflects on prince's death, talks dream guests for 2017 reunion tour…, trending on billboard.

Watch the “Level” video below:

“Level” is among the 15 tracks featured on Introducing Stokely . A further evolution of Mint Condition’s multi-genre versatility, the album’s progressive take on R&B/soul is aided by special guests Robert Glasper (“Art in Motion”), Estelle (“U & I”), Wale (“Way Up”) and Omi (“Wheels Up”).

“I don’t like doing the obvious,” he tells Billboard . “But I also don’t want to be too contrived. … Just enough to where it speaks to me artistically.”

He also makes clear that his solo outing doesn’t mean Mint Condition is finished. “We’re still rocking together,” says the Grammy-nominated artist. “We’re just all doing our own different projects right now.”

For Stokely, that also includes his current tour with the reunited Revolution. Although Mint Condition played with Prince during the latter’s 2010 Welcome 2 America tour, Stokley describes this particular experience as both “cool and surreal.”

“Onstage, I’ve had flashes of the first time I viewed Purple Rain as a teenager. and it’s like. wow,” he says. “This is the music; these are the guys. There have been several tribute bands, but this is the one . For the audience, it’s their first time getting the chance to see The Revolution and say an official goodbye. So it’s healing and a celebration.”

After wrapping a two-night stand in San Francisco on Wednesday evening (July 12), The Revolution will play July dates in Reno, Seattle and Minneapolis before returning to Los Angeles (Sept. 4). And in between, starting July 28 in Houston, Stokley will perform solo dates in Dallas, Chicago and other markets through September. Below are more Stokley interview highlight, as he chats about…

Going solo: It was just a natural progression. I didn’t want to do the obvious early in my career. There were a million freaking solo artists out then, but not many bands. Mint Condition is something very special that needed to happen first. We’ve defied so many odds over the last 25-30 years. Now I want to dive into other areas of my life musically. It was also an opportunity to collaborate with more people. As I’ve told others, I get tired sometimes of my own voice literally and sometimes as a producer. It’s always good to tap into different energy.

Working for the first time with production duo Carvin & Ivan (Musiq Soulchild, Jill Scott, Ledisi) : They remind me of a younger Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis [who initially signed Mint Condition to their Perspective label] of the East Coast. They’re very musical with very thought- provoking lyrics.

Revealing more of himself musically : There are a lot of nuances that I wanted to expand on. I grew up playing West Indian music, soca and reggae. There are also traces of hip-hop, jazz and syncopated rhythms. This isn’t something where I went vocally crazy because I feel like people have already gotten that from me. I wanted this to be a good representation of songwriting, and production … the many different facets of who I am. It’s like a world view of me.

Why “Level” is resonating : It’s a feel-good, sunshiny song, one of those things where when the music hits you, it’s the truth. The message is universal enough: We’re only as strong as each other. It sounds corny, but that’s what it is. Simply truthful.

Being indie for 12 years before it was fashionable : It’s kind of the wild west out there now. Everybody is trying to figure out what’s going on, including the record companies. They don’t really know where the business is because it’s a moving target. You can’t really pin it down. The best thing one can do is develop your own little corner store as best you can, get your fans, and have them follow wherever you may go.

His favorite memories of Prince:  Prince loved what Mint Condition does. He and I had conversations about the future of the band and my future as a solo artist. I’ll miss those chats as well as the random times when he’d come down to a club I was playing at when Mint Condition wasn’t on the road. I’d be playing drums and he’s throwing $100 bills at my head. And I’m like, “What the hell is he doing?” [ Laughs ]

A hitmaker with mint condition, st. paul's stokley now launches an ambitious solo album.

While he waited for his oft-delayed album to drop, St. Paul singer Stokley Williams headed to a Los Angeles roller rink to shoot a video with Snoop Dogg. He remotely recorded a duet with Grammy-grabbing sensation H.E.R. He flew to Ghana for a video shoot to give the African-titled LP some authentic flavor.

"COVID helped this album to dig deeper in areas I wouldn't have ordinarily gone," said the longtime frontman for hitmakers Mint Condition. "It's been starts and stops and uncertainty. It presented some challenges but also some other opportunities."

"Sankofa," his second solo album, finally arrives Friday. An ear-opening feast of textures, colors and soulfulness, it embraces jazz, R&B, hip-hop, rock, pop, Pan-African sounds — you name it — all with a modern, electronic veneer and Williams' supple, Stevie Wonder-evoking voice.

The title, from Ghana's Akan tribe, "is a word I've heard all my life," said the singer, who bills himself simply as Stokley now. "My parents are educators. It literally means 'Go back and get it.' It's just your roots. Sankofa is looking backward while traveling forward. Remember where you're from to know where you're going."

Originally set for release last year, the deeply rewarding collection grew to 18 tracks during the pandemic.

The genre-thwarting multi-instrumentalist insists he "fits in everywhere." The album's first single, the slow jam "She," released in 2019, went to No. 1 last year on Billboard's adult R&B chart, where hits by H.E.R. and Robin Thicke reside.

Rather than a consistent sound, the theme that runs through "Sankofa" is rhythm — cool, smooth, funky, danceable, sexy, soothing rhythms.

That's not surprising because Stokley started as a drummer at age 4. He has played on records by Janet Jackson, Usher and, of course, Mint Condition, the group he formed with fellow students from St. Paul Central High School. He also has drummed in Twin Cities venues with Dr. Mambo's Combo, the Steeles, Estaire Godinez and various jazz ensembles.

"Sankofa" even includes the distinctive sounds of steel pan drum, the Caribbean instrument that young Stokley studied with master Cliff Alexis Sr.

"People always look at the steel pan as a vacation kind of thing," Stokley noted. "No, it's an amazing instrument that can be used in any genre. I'm going to put it in mainstream life. It's also an ode to my teacher."

Stokley also nods to his father, Mahmoud El-Kati, a retired Macalester College professor of African American studies and a noted activist, who contributes spoken-word passages to "Sankofa."

"It wasn't complete unless he was on there. He's alpha and omega, the beginning and the end," Stokley said.

Back with Jam and Lewis

"Sankofa" also reconnects Stokley with his first record label, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis' Perspective Records.

Mint Condition, with Stokley on lead vocals and drums, signed with Perspective in 1989 and went on to score such '90s hits as "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)" and "U Send Me Swingin'. "

"I've been wanting him to do a solo album for years, even when he was with Mint, which didn't go over too well because he's so loyal," Lewis said.

"He's a musician's musician. Plus, Stokley reminds us that we miss principle and honor in our culture when he sings so positively about women. His songs are always positive, always healing. And he's going to give it up onstage. It's kind of built in if you come from Minneapolis or St. Paul."

Last seen performing at a pre-Super Bowl concert in 2018 curated by Jam and Lewis, Mint Condition is on hiatus.

"I'm doing what I'm doing. Everybody's got different things going on," Stokley said. "Hopefully we'll come back at some point and compare notes. I'm on a path that I wasn't able to do in the band."

After releasing his first solo album in 2017, he toured with the Revolution, Prince's heyday band, singing a handful of Purple tunes each night.

"I got to be part of this legacy and then I'd go on the side of the stage and watch as a fan," he said. "It was a perfect marriage because I had ' Introducing Stokley ' out at the time, and people started to connect the dots."

To preview "Sankofa," Stokley did a handful of gigs and performed on "The Kelly Clarkson Show." He's also posted five videos of "Sankofa" tunes, including a remix of "Cascade" in Minneapolis with his touring band of Minnesota musicians.

Having worked with Stokley since 2008 (as Mint's touring drummer), Brandon Commodore noticed a change during the pandemic.

"The time off charged him up and gave him a new inspiration," Commodore said last week before a Stokley concert in Texas. "With all his online content [@stokleyofficial on Twitter and Instagram ], he found a way to connect with his audience when he couldn't perform. And once you start traveling on social media, you find younger folks get curious and interested."

Seemingly ageless

Soft-spoken and articulate, Stokley has a Zen quality about him. He's mindful and thoughtful, careful about his health and well-being, cognizant of his roots and the future of his children.

At 54, he looks 20 years younger. He says he's tried "every kind of exercise there is," and doesn't feel any particular age.

When he was in Ghana, working with young models and 20-something Ghanaian singer KiDi to film a video for the song "Woman," people kept trying to figure out how old he is.

"The body that refuses to age," he said with a smile. "I'm just trying to keep what Mom and Papa gave me.

But he opted for an old-school setting when it came time to make a video of the dance-happy tune "Vibrant" with Snoop Dogg — a roller rink.

Snoop knows how to skate but didn't want to see any outtakes on TMZ, Stokley said.

"I can still skate a little bit. It's been over 20 years. But I still have some boogie left."

With unexpected downtime during the pandemic, he got his son ready for ninth grade and his daughter for her sophomore year of college (her first on campus in New York).

He's also counseled his children about the racial reckoning in the post-George Floyd world.

"I'm really worried for them," he said. "I've had the experience with my son riding with me and being stopped by the cops: 'Just pay attention to what I'm doing.'

"I'm glad we did have [that experience]. It's hard to navigate."

He advised his children: "You can't do the same things your friends do. Be mindful of that. Stay positive. Try to move forward. Enlighten some people who don't get it."

A lover of colors and textures, Stokley favors stylish outfits, often with African or floral patterns. And hats of all kinds.

He may have more than 2,000. Some are in boxes, some hanging on the wall, some stacked in closets. "Some I forget about," he admitted.

"I've always loved hats, different designs, colors. Just what it does for the outfit. What it does for moods. And it's practical sometimes, especially here in the wintertime.

"It's a throwback. My grandfather used to wear hats. It's kind of an ode to that.

"It's sankofa. It's part of your purpose."

Get ready to groove with your Mint Condition tickets from TicketSmarter. The American soul and R&B band Mint Condition hail from St. Paul, Minnesota and, coming from the same area where Prince established his name, it was perhaps inevitable that the two should eventually meet and collaborate; to celebrate 20 successful years in the music business Mint Condition joined Prince on his Welcome 2 America tour in 2010. In later years after Prince's death Mint Condition's founding member, drummer and lead vocalist Stokley Williams would join Prince's backing band The Revolution to perform some of Prince's early material during their tour. Mint Condition's story began in the mid-1980s when a group of high school kids led by Williams formed an R&B band. After numerous hits, the band took a six-year hiatus which began in 1999 and they resurfaced in 2005 with the album 'Livin' the Luxury Brown'.

The album went to number one in the Independent Charts and proved the band hadn't lost their touch. However, it wasn't until the single 'Nothing Left to Say' lifted off their follow-up 2008 album 'E-Life' that the band made it back into the top 30 in the R&B Singles Chart, the first time in almost three decades. All but one of the original members (Keri Lewis) remains active within the band to this day and the band can look back on a successful career that produced some well-received R&B ballads, particularly during their 1990s heyday. You’re bound to hear a mix of R&B and soul tracks with your Mint Condition tickets.
