He has released six chart-performing studio albums and three compilation efforts with the band. Rucker’s time with the band has brought in numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, and an MTV Video Music Award. In 2002, Rucker released his debut solo album. “Have a Good Time,” his latest single, was an appropriate show opener for Darius Rucker on Thursday night, Aug. 10, at the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre.

That’s pretty much what happens any time Rucker hits a stage, on his own or with Hootie & the Blowfish.

His hour-and-45-minute Starting Fires Tour stop on Thursday certainly held to that standard. A good time has indeed become a dependable result any time he performs, and T-shirted/trucker cap casualness and 500-watt smile won the MLA crowd over from just about the moment Rucker walked onstage to the taped strains of the Ohio Players’ “Fire.”

Rucker is one of only a few artists who have managed to bridge the pop and country divide with platinum results on both sides — and prove that the two can certainly coexist over the course of a concert. He told the crowd early on that, “If it’s alright with you, Detroit, we’re gonna play some country music,” but Thursday’s show knitted together everything he does, from country hits to “the Hootie guy” to a music fan himself, in the process reflecting the broad tastes of a general, streaming-oriented music fan circa 2023.

Some surprising covers created a kinship with the 6,000 or so at MLA on Thursday. Early in the set Rucker and his six-member Carolina Grey Boys band dug into John Mellencamp’s Pink Houses with twangy dobro accents. About halfway through he announced that “Me and the band decided this is the summer of the 90s,” launching into a genre-jumping medley of Tim McGraw’s “I Like It, I Love It,” TLC’s “Waterfalls” and Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison.”

And the concert with Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” leading into Rucker’s hit cover of Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel,” a pairing you’re not going to find anywhere — except maybe at one of his shows.

There were, of course, Hootie moments too, including an emotive “Let Her Cry” and extended, countrified treatments of “Hold My Hand” and “Only Wanna Be With You” that let band members such as multi-instrumentalist Gary Murray and lead guitarist Quinton Gibson. Amidst all that was Rucker’s own material, sampling from five of his solo albums and previewing the upcoming “Carolyn’s Boy” (out October 6) with “Fires Don’t Start Themselves” as well as “Have a Good Time.”

Rucker performed “History in the Making” accompanied only by piano and populated the set with more than 20 years of his country hits, including “It Won’t Be Like This For Long,” “Alright,” “Come Back Song,” “Radio,” “For the First Time” and “True Believers.” Well-received opening act Drew Holcomb also joined Rucker for a duet on “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It.”

Rucker shouted out “If I Told You” as one of his favorite songs, both before and after his performance, and he lamented that the sensual “Hands on Me” from his last album, 2017’s “When Was the Last Time,” was never released as a single. “Homegrown Honey,” meanwhile, morphed into the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music” as Rucker’s walk-off music at the end of the main set.

It was indeed a rich night of listening to music, without barriers — and yet another one of the good times that Rucker delivers on a regular basis.

Rucker plans to once again provide his concerts as a platform to honor and present homes to our nation’s combat wounded heroes and Gold Star spouses, in conjunction with Project Rebuild. Rucker, along with Lieutenant General Sisco, CEO and founder of Military Warriors Support Foundation, presented the first house in an appearance on NBC’s Today and went on to present 13 more homes in 2015. The Project Rebuild campaign arose from a partnership between Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Military Warriors Support Foundation to assist in rebuilding the lives of our wounded veterans. Project Rebuild helps place wounded veterans in mortgage-free homes and help ease the transition back to civilian life.

The Good for a Good Time Tour will also partner with the rideshare app Uber for select dates, giving fans the chance to win free rides as well as VIP packages. About Michael Ray When rising country singer Michael Ray made his first exploratory trip to Nashville, he got a life-changing piece of advice from an industry insider—Go home. Turns out it was the best thing Ray ever did. He built a rowdy fan base back home and returned to Nashville three years later. Ray continued the journey from tiny Eustis, Florida, to the big time with the release of his first single “Kiss You In The Morning,” which went #1 in just 24 weeks. Ray’s follow- up single, “Real Men Love Jesus,” is currently climbing the charts and touching hearts at the same time. Raised in rural central Florida an hour from Orlando, Ray grew up hunting alligators and fishing for tarpon at the end of white sand dirt roads. The child of a family full of musicians, he began his professional career before he was a teenager, graduated to the bar scene as soon as he could drive and hasn’t let up on the pedal since. When he decided it was time to move to Nashville, the work Ray had put in began to pay off quickly. He met manager Tony Conway, a 40 year industry veteran and owner/CEO at Ontourage Management. Conway helped guide Ray to a publishing contract with Warner/Chappell Music and a record deal with Atlantic Records / Warner Music Nashville. Since the release of his first two singles, Ray continues to grow his following, touring with Chase Rice, Sam Hunt, and Kip Moore, and kicking off 2016 touring with Brantley Gilbert.
