A middle-aged man of Moroccan descent (Mohamed Majd) embarks on a long journey from southern France to Mecca -- but for this crusade, he unexpectedly asks his son, Reda (Nicolas Cazalé), to go with him. Reda, a thoroughly Westernized teenager, is taken aback by the request, and even more surprised when his father says they will be traveling by car. Given their different cultures, the pair's relationship starts off cold and distant, but the ice starts to thaw as they get to know each other.

Critic Reviews for Le Grand Voyage
Audience reviews for le grand voyage.
I was expecting the father and son to grow together over the course of their journey. I believe that was the intent of the film maker. I kept waiting, but very little true understanding developed between them. They didnt seem to move much further in their relationship than when the movie began. Not a bad movie, but definitely not very exciting...
I can't believe this film is on here! Fair play.

Reda, summoned to accompany his father on a pilgrimage to Mecca, complies reluctantly - as he preparing for his baccalaureat and, even more important, has a secret love relationship. The trip across Europe in a broken-down car is also the departure of his father: upon arrival in Mecca, both Reda and his father are not the characters they were at the start of the movie. Avoiding the hackneyed theme of the return to the homeland, the film uses the departure to renew a connection between two generation.

THE GREAT JOURNEY
by Ismaël Ferroukhi
A few weeks before his college entrance exams, Reda finds himself forced to drive his father to Mecca. From the start, the journey looks to be difficult. Reda and his father have nothing in common. Talk is reduced to the strict minimum. Reda wants to experience this trip in his own way. His father demands respect for himself and the meaning of this pilgrimage. As they drive through different countries and meet various people, Reda and his father observe each other. From the south of France, through Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Saudi Arabia, their road is 3,000 miles long.

Le Grand Voyage review – an incredible spectacle
A sweet-natured and affecting road movie about an elderly Moroccan exile in France who makes his son drive him on a 3,000 mile pilgrimage to Mecca
I smaël Ferroukhi’s first feature is a sweet-natured and affecting road movie about an elderly Moroccan exile in France forcing his irreligious younger son to drive him on a 3,000 mile Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia. We don’t get offered many novel variations on this classic theme: no prizes for guessing if father and son have arguments but wind up treasuring each other.
But it is made notable and even remarkable for the unprecedented scenes at Mecca itself. Though documentarists have been permitted to shoot there in the past, this is the first time for a feature film, and Ferroukhi has his characters mingling with the pilgrims making the hajj - two million extras! It really is an incredible spectacle: an authentic religious phenomenon which is largely invisible and under-imagined in western culture. That extraordinary panorama of white-clad pilgrims crowding into the mosque’s inner terraces has not yet been rendered familiar as an image in the same way as, say, St Peter’s in Rome.
In some ways it is a pity that the scenes in Mecca do not occupy more of the film, yet without the long build-up, showing the feuding father and son driving through Europe and the Middle East, the final section wouldn’t count for as much. There are very good performances from Mohamed Majd and Nicolas Cazalé as father and son.

A Moroccan immigrant in France asks his adolescent son to drive him across seven countries as he undertakes the Hajj to Mecca.
It takes a while for his father to forgive him. The teenager feels like a complete outsider when they connect with a caravan of other Muslim pilgrims. Ismaël Ferroukhi, who also wrote the script of the story, has fused together a very clever combination of road movie and family drama in Le grand voyage, concentrating on the generational conflict and the attitude towards Islam.
