Visit Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar is in the Cantabria province of the Asturias and Cantabria region of Spain, about 30km from Santander. It is positioned slightly inland despite its name!

Santillana del Mar is a wonderful medieval town, once said by the French philosopher Satre to be 'the most beautiful town in Spain'.

Explore Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar is built of a golden sandstone and there are a wealth of churches and 14 to 17th century mansions to explore. If you can visit the town out of season (in the summer there are lots of tourists) it really is like stepping back in time. It is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe.

At the heart of the town is a monastery, 'La Colegiata' which was built to house the bones of Saint Juliana. The Colegiata de Santa Juliana is a Romanesque cathedral and contains lovely 12th century cloisters. It costs about 3 euros to enter the cloisters. The village of Sanillana grew up around this church and is named after it.

The main plaza, Plaza Mayor is a delight. One of the mansions on the Plaza is now a parador, the Parador Gil Blas, one of two in the town! The parador is so named as the hero of the novel 'Gil Blas' by Alain-René Lesage which was set in Santillana del Mar. This parador is one of the best and so if you are looking to try some of these wonderful Spanish hotels this one is a good choice.

The town hall and the 15th century Don Borja's tower and 14th century Merino's tower are all superb. The two towers are amongst the oldest buildings in the town.

Amongst the mansions one of the best is the Casa de los Hombrones close to the Plaza Mayor, but there are many mansions and all have interesting details. Of the Renaissance palaces one of the best is the Velarde palace.

At the other end of the main street from the Colegiata is the Convent of the Poor Clares. This houses a good art collection which started when the nuns were encouraged to collect and restore paintings abandoned during the Civil War in Spain.

There is a small museum of torture in the village, the Museo de la Tortura, full of instruments of torture.

Santillana del Mar is on the northern route of the Pilgrim's Way, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. This route travels along the northern coast of Spain and is a bit quieter than the main route slightly further south.

Places to visit nearby

As well as ambling through the town the coast is only 3 km away and the UNESCO World Heritage Caves of Altamira are only 2 kms away.

The unusual town of Comillas with its Modernista architecture is just a few kilometers to the west of Santillana del Mar.

Be sure to visit Santander which is the capital of Cantabria and is an elegant seaside resort.

Guide To Santillana del Mar, Best Things To Do

Here’s my guide to the lovely town of Santillana del Mar. It’s an idyllic town that’s an easy day trip from Bilbao . This guide covers the best things see and do in and around Santillana del Mar.

the main drag through Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar is the jewel of Cantabria and must visit destination in northern Spain .

With its rolling green hills, the Cantabria region is spectacularly beautiful. It’s dotted with medieval villages untouched by time. It’s so verdant and eye catching, you could imagine it in a Van Gogh painting.

Perhaps the most charming village is Santillana del Mar. The philosopher Jean Paul Sartre called it “the prettiest village in Spain.”

There are many beautiful villages in Spain, of course. But Santillana is a strong contender for the top crown.

Santilla del Mar is nicknamed the “Town of Three Lies.” It’s actual name, translated, means holy, flat, and of the sea. Santillana is none of those things, hence its affectionate nickname.

The truth is that the tiny village lives up to its hype. Santillana del Mar is a delightful warren of dreamy cobbled streets, caramel colored architecture, and romantic wrought iron Juliet type balconies.

History of Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar dates from the middle ages. In 1575, strict town planning rules were enacted.

They’re still in place today. Among other things, they stipulate that only residents or hotel guests can drive in the village.

During medieval times, Santillana’s merchants were prosperous. They sold wool, dairy products, and linen. They built the refined ochre colored houses and palaces that make Santilla so distinctive.

The perfectly preserved historic core of the village was declared a UNESCO site in 2011.

Guide To Santillana del Mar : What To Do

1. stroll the charming village.

We arrived in Santillana via car from Bilbao.

Our first order of business on a rather blustery and gray summer day was to tuck into some chocolate and churros at a quaint cafe near the beginning of the main drag.

There’s delightfully little to do in Santillana del Mar. It’s more of a “living museum” that you wander around and admire. And it’s all pedestrianized.

wrought iron balconies and flower pots in medieval Santillana del Mar

The charm is in the little nooks, cobblestones streets, and window boxes overflowing with brightly colored flowers. The village boasts golden gothic houses built by noblemen in the 15th-17th century. Wrought iron balconies and coats of arms are inlaid into many facades.

There are plenty of artisan shops and little cafes, to help wile away your time. They offer leather goods, ceramics, and specialty cheeses. The enchanting

Plaza Mayor is as impressive and awe-inspiring as any in Spain. Marvel at the intricate stone carvings adorning the Church of Santa Juliana.

It’s a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture. Step inside to admire its ornate interior and soak in the serene atmosphere.

And you can stop for a cocktail in the secret enclosed garden of the Parador Hotel, on Plaza Ramón Pelayo.

2. The Collegiate Church

Keep strolling down the Calle de Santo Domingo and you’ll reach the Colegiata, or the Collegiate Church.

It’s the most important religious Romanesque monument in Cantabria. It was built over an old hermitage in the 12th century. On the main facade, there’s a triangular pediment with a martyr’s image.

Once an important pilgrimage center, this magnificent building houses the tomb of the local medieval martyr, St. Juliana or Santa Llana, from which the village takes its name.

the Colegiata in Santillana del Mar

The ivy covered cloister is considered a masterpiece. The columns in the cloister are intricately carved.

They show biblical scenes and mythical beasts like coiled serpents. There’s a 17th century Mexican silver altarpiece, a somewhat surprising piece for a tiny village.

3. The Spine Chilling Torture Museum

If you want a dark and morbidly fascinating dose of medieval history, stop in at the Torture Museum, El Museo de la Tortura, on Calle de Bertrand Clisson.

The museum has a collection of 70 genuine and replica torture devices. The exhibits describe all the sickening ways people were tortured and publicly humiliated during the Spanish Inquisition.

I feel happy to live in this century. Reading about it was pure torture.

4. Religious Procession

One of the highlights of our visit was witnessing a religious procession to the Colegiatia.

The locals dressed for the occasion. It was fascinating to watch. Here’s my video .

5. Altamira Caves

Seven minutes from the village lies the world renowned Altamira Caves, famous landmark in Spain . The caves are 36,000 years old.

They date from the end of the Ice Age and contain some of the best preserved prehistoric art anywhere in the world. They’re known as the “Sistine Chapel of the Paleolithic Age.”

The original Altamira cave became a UNESCO site in 1985. 17 other caves were added to the UNESCO inscription in 2008 as “humanity’s earliest accomplished art.”

The caves were discovered in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz de Sautola, and his young daughter. The main gallery is approximately 300 meters long. It boasts 16 beautiful polychromatic paintings made with natural pigment depicting bisons and wild boars.

painting from the original Altamira Caves, one of the best things to do in Santillana Del Mar

Visitors flocked to the caves. But all the visitor love threatened the fragile site. Algae like mold began to appear on the paintings.

The damage was due to visitors altering the temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels. The caves were closed to the public in 2002.

In 2001, a replica cave and museum were built near the site. The replica cave was created using computerized digital-transfer technology. The paintings are well lit and easier to see than in the original caves.

In 2014, the original cave was reopened to the public on a very restricted basis. Each week on Friday, 5 lucky visitors to the museum are selected at random, clad in protective gear, and given a 37 minute tour.

painting from the replica cave of Altamira

To have a chance, you must be over 16 and in the museum between 9:30-10:30 am. You must stay with the guide; you can’t wander off.

What’s amazing about the paintings is that they were made by primitive pro-magnon men. But their beauty and simplicity is lovely. You can almost imagine them having been painted by Picasso .

No one knows for sure why they were created. There’s some general agreement that it wasn’t purely for decoration. The paintings likely served a religious purpose.

El Capricho, an early Antoni Gaudi building

6. Side Trip To Comillas

If you have time after your visit in Santillana del Mar, head to the architecturally rich village of Comillas, just 15 minutes away.

There, you can see one of Gaudi’s first buildings, the colorful El Capricho . It’s one of the few buildings he created outside of Catalonia. It’s a colorful blend of Art Nouveau and Moorish influences, topped off with sunflower motifs.

You can also see the spectacular Palacio de Sobrellano, designed by Guadi’s mentor, Joan Martorell i Montells. It’s an early hint of Barcelona style Modernism .

santillana del mar tourist information

Santillana del Mar is a picturesque town of 4200 people (2018) in Cantabria, Spain , renowned for its medieval architecture. The village is a bit of a tourist trap, and is so swamped with new developments around the outskirts, that on arrival you might be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss is about.

However, the original kernel of the medieval village survives in the centre, although the beauty of the winding streets and yellow sandstone buildings is rather marred by the abundance of shops selling tourist nick-nacks that have proliferated into almost every doorway.

For the more adventurous, there are some lovely walks in the small hills around the town that afford stunning views of the Picos de Europa, the mountain ranges, and the coast of the Bay of Biscay.

I was drawn to make a day trip to the charming town of Santillana del Mar after discovering its intriguing moniker. Known as the 'Town of Three Lies,' its name is derived from three Spanish words: "Santo," meaning saint, "llana," meaning flat, and "mar," meaning sea. However, the quaint town in Cantabria doesn't embody any of these characteristics, hence its nickname. Despite this, Santillana del Mar is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain and boasts a world heritage site. Decades ago Jean-Paul Sartre called Santillana del Mar ‘the most beautiful village in Spain’ and it’s hard to argue. At one point nearly every resident was a wealthy noble, and they left behind a time capsule of cobbled lanes, medieval towers, aristocratic Gothic and Renaissance palaces and a handsome Romanesque church amid lush green hills and dairy farms.

It’s only a 5-minute drive to the sea and Cantabria’s beautiful, cliff-lined coast and sandy beaches.

Although most people only stay for an hour or so, stopping for a drink before (or after) visiting the Cave of Altamira , it’s a lovely place to spend a night or two – after dark, when the coach parties go, Santillana is at its most evocative.

While you’re there

If you have time, make a 15-minute drive to the picturesque ruins of the Hermitage of Santa Justa, tucked in the coastal rock formations just above the waves, and reached via a walkway along the shore. There’s also a very scenic beach and bar.

Getting there & doing it

It’s easiest to reach Santillana by car; there are two large car parks on the edges of the village, although they often fill up in high season. Buses go from Santander and Torrelavega, which has the nearest train station. It’s a 1.5-hour drive (120kms) from Bilbao.

Because Santillana gets so many tourists, restaurants often don’t try as hard as they might, but the Gran Duque and El Bisonte Rojo are reliable bets.

When to do it

Little Santillana del Mar can be chock a block with day-trippers from spring to autumn; try to stay overnight, when it regains its ageless tranquillity. A good strategy to avoid the crowds is to arrive at dinner time, stay overnight, visit the Cave of Altamira first thing in the morning, and spend the day at the beach or exploring the coast, and return in time for tapas.

It’s not so hard to describe why UNESCO listed Santillana del Mar is so special.  Dating back to the 8th century Santillana del Mar  is one of the prime places you must visit if travelling through Cantabria in Northern Spain.  Like a living museum, Sartre described it as “the loveliest town in Spain” and it is not surprising.

Whatever the time of day or night – Santillana’s narrow long streets ooze atmosphere. The ochre coloured walls of the towns numerous `palacios´ shimmer in daylight and after nightfall those same walls seem to be infused with character and mystery. Thankfully for visitors, this is a place where pedestrians rule – and many of the walkers here are on a mission. You see, the Northern Camino de Santiago passes through the town centre and Santillana del Mar comes alive in the late afternoon with pilgrims.

There’s a lot to see and do here. Make sure that you take a turn around the Colegiata . The original structure pre-dates the town. What you see now is from 12th century Romanesque brilliance and has been on the must-see list of every travel writer to Spain. You’ll see why when you get there. It’s a real gem – just like its surroundings!

If you wish to base yourself in Santillana, there are numerous charming historical hotels including the 18th century Parador de Santillana de Gil Blas . Not only is the location idyllic – in the very centre of this beautifully preserved cobbled-street town – but it’s own history as a private residence and hotel is very interesting too.

Closeby are the Altamira Cave Museum and the Cabarceno Wildlife Park. Also one of the few works by Antoni Gaudi, outside of his native Catalonia, El Capricho , can be visited in nearby Comillas.  See our blog for more on this wonderful building and Gaudi in Cantabria .

Wander the streets

The main attraction in Santillana del Mar is the picturesque streets. With cobbled streets and stone buildings, wandering around is like being transported back in time, and it’s easy to see why it is known as one of the prettiest towns in Spain. The entire centre of the town is pedestrianised, leaving you with plenty of space to properly explore.

Santillana del Mar is pretty small so it’s nearly impossible to get lost, and the best way to explore is just to switch off Google Maps and see what you stumble upon.

A medieval building in Santillana del Mar, Spain

That being said, there are some beautiful medieval buildings to spot. Make sure you look out for the Collegiate Church of Santillana, and the Casas de los Quevedo y Cossío .

Where to Eat

Churros on calle río.

I stopped at a little café with a quaint terrace to eat some churros and people watch, and it couldn’t have been more picturesque. I couldn’t spot the name of the café but click here for the google maps location so you know what to look for. Both the churros and crêpes were fantastic and I definitely recommend it.

Menu del Día

In many restaurants around Spain, you’ll find a great lunchtime offer called the Menu del Día. You can get a three-course lunch meal from a set menu, plus bread, water, and house wine, all for less than €20. Santillana del Mar certainly has its fair share. I dined at El Jardín , but you can find several great options around the town.

You’ll often find some traditional meals on the menu, so take the opportunity to try out some Cantabrian specialties, such as Cocido Montañés , a meat and bean stew, or finish up your meal with some Quesada pasiega for dessert.

About santillana del mar.

Santillana del Mar in Cantabria is often considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, a medieval town of stunning architecture close to the incredible Altamira Caves, which are filled with some of the world's oldest and best-preserved prehistoric art in the world.

Named after St Juliana whose remains reside in the town's stunning church, the Colegiata de Santa Juliana, Santillana del Mar has a rich history that is visible in every inch of the town. The entire town is a registered National Monument whose medieval architecture is some of the most important still standing in Spain, including the Torre del Merino and Torre de Don Borja, two towers that were built as both military edifications and as homes of the nobility. Wander through the cobbled streets of medieval mansions, or why not head out of town into the countryside and discover the palacios and villas of the rich amongst the lush green of rural Cantabria?

Things to Do in Santillana del Mar

29km (18 miles) SW of Santander, 393km (244 miles) N of Madrid

Among the most perfectly preserved medieval villages in Europe, Santillana del Mar is now a famous Spanish national landmark. A monastery houses the relics of St. Juliana, a martyr in Asia Minor who refused to surrender her virginity to her husband. The name Santillana is a contraction of "Santa Juliana." The "del Mar" is misleading, as Santillana is not on the water but inland.

Jean-Paul Sartre called Santillana "the prettiest village in Spain," and we wouldn't want to dispute his esteemed judgment. In spite of all the tour buses, Santillana retains its medieval atmosphere and is very much a village of dairy farmers to this day.

Wander on foot throughout the village, taking in its principal sites, including Plaza de Ramón Pelayo (sometimes called Plaza Mayor). Here the Parador de Santillana has been installed in the old Barreda Bracho residence.

A 15th-century tower, facing Calle de Juan Infante, is known for its pointed arched doorway. A walk along Calle de las Lindas (Street of Beautiful Women) may not live up to its promise, but it does include many of the oldest buildings in Santillana and two towers dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Calle del Río gets its name from a stream running through town to a central fountain.

Santillana del Mar is the traditional base for visiting the Caves of Altamira , which contain some of the most famous Stone Age paintings in the world. However, the government has closed the caves. Instead of the original caves, you can visit an amazing facsimile, well worth your while.
