Movie Reviews

Tv/streaming, collections, chaz's journal, great movies, contributors, the tourist returns for tumultuous second season on netflix.

the tourist season 2

The first season of “The Tourist” was a clever little thriller over on Max, but that company continued its cavalcade of confusing choices and dumped the second outing, allowing the show to travel to Netflix, where it has been consistently in the top ten for the entirety of February as audiences caught up with year one. That fun season is now followed by a very twisted second one, a 6-episode outing that moves the action from Australia to Ireland—switching the title character if you think about it from one protagonist to the other—and upping the surreal, unpredictable sense of dark humor. It’s a bit of a rockier road in terms of quality, but there’s an admirable lunacy to the storytelling here that holds it together, throwing in new twists and memorable characters in a manner that’s reminiscent of prime Coen brothers, wherein one never knew what was going to happen next, and it was all darkly humorous at the same time. While Danielle Macdonald gets a little lost in the late-season emotion of this year, Jamie Dornan really holds it all together with a deceptively natural, engaging performance. It’s insane Max ever let him go.

The first season of “The Tourist” has a beautiful simplicity in its story of a man who wakes up after a car accident in the Outback with no idea of who he is or how he got there, only to discover that he may not like the guy he used to be. With so many questions answered in what could have been a self-contained season, one might wonder how they could do it again—amnesia a second time? The writers smartly move the action back to Elliot’s (Dornan) homeland in season two as he and Helen (Macdonald) travel there to learn more details about his dark past after receiving a mysterious photo. Before they even really get a pint in them, Elliot is kidnapped and thrown into the middle of a generation-spanning turf war between the families of the Cassidys and the McDonnells. The latter is led by the vicious Frank ( Francis Magee ) and the former by none other than our hero’s mother, Niamh (the excellent Olwen Fouéré ).

the tourist season 2

A season that opens by separating its heroes and sending one to a remote island where he’s kept prisoner has about a dozen other twists up its sleeve that I wouldn't dare spoil here, as that's the joy of watching the show. Everyone on “The Tourist” hides an odd secret or two, even the seemingly ordinary detective ( Conor MacNeill ), who has something insane going on in his basement. When Helen sees her potential mother-in-law commit murder in the premiere it’s just the beginning of a series of narrative turns that stress that classic suspension of disbelief. “The Tourist” is like those page-turning novels you read on a beach, wherein each chapter ends with an insane new revelation that forces you to read the next before you question if it actually makes any sense at all. It’s really the show’s strength: A sense of breakneck plotting in an era when everyone feels like every show is a few episodes too long for its threadbare plot.

If the plotting is the strength, the emotions of the second season feel a bit like a weakness at times. The love story between Helen and Elliot takes center stage in rather intense ways, and it leads to a number of heartwrenching scenes, especially in the back half, that feel overly melodramatic. “The Tourist” is at its best when it’s not taking itself very seriously, having fun with its characters. Every time it diverts to really define Helen and Elliot’s eternal love, the seams in the writing start to show, and Macdonald gets lost a few times this season in overwrought melodrama that feels unearned. Luckily, she’s balanced by a truly great Dornan performance, one that seems to be honestly responding to every loony twist thrown his way. It’s more subdued that season one, allowing him to be the center as the chaotic world spins around him.

No one really understands what the heck is going on over at Max that they keep canceling movies and dropping content—an underreported recent head scratcher was allowing “Band of Brothers” to be on Netflix while “ Masters of the Air ” was dropping on Apple, which surely reignited interest in the original Playtone production in a manner that one would think would have sent people back to Max, but whatever. Letting “The Tourist” slide over to Netflix may be low on the list of their insane decisions of late, but it’s been funny to watch it slay for the competition, and it's hard to believe that the second season won’t do exactly the same. It’s funny to consider the executives who made the decision to let “The Tourist” go watching this effective second season on Netflix themselves, probably wondering why there aren’t more shows like it on Max.

Whole season screened for review. On Netflix February 29th.

Stephen King Is Right About Netflix's "Terrific" New Thriller Show - But There's A Catch

Why the tourist's rotten tomatoes critics & audiences scores are so divided, compelling severance season 2 theory claims lumon’s elevator is more important than you think.

Warning! SPOILERS about The Tourist season 2, episode 6 ahead.

  • The Tourist season 2 ending left some questions unanswered, adding more mysteries to Elliot's story.
  • The final confrontation between the McDonnells and Cassidys brought a satisfying conclusion.
  • Helen and Elliot reconciled after accepting their pasts don't define them in The Tourist season 2.

The Tourist season 2 answered many questions about Elliot’s history and expanded his backstory, but most of the reasons behind his past choices remain unknown, and the very last scene only raised more questions about his story. Moving the setting from Australia to Elliot’s home country of Ireland added more mysteries to the story, chiefly regarding the reasons why the McDonnells abducted Elliot and why some of them wanted him dead. The final confrontation between McDonnells and Cassidys provided a satisfying culmination of all their conflicts in The Tourist season 2, episode 6, with Helen’s findings surprisingly ending them.

While the events of The Tourist season 2 might have prompted Elliot and Helen to think they were wrong to visit Ireland, their trip only enriched The Tourist ’s amnesia plot . Indeed, it provided more answers about Elliot’s past and even some peace of mind once he accepted his next actions would have proven who he was, not his past. From revealing new and old important characters in Elliot’s life, and solving decades-old mysteries, The Tourist season 2’s ending concluded most storylines introduced in seasons 1 and 2, and even broached another secret that might return to inconvenience Elliot’s new life.

Stephen King has made no secret of the fact he's a big fan of a new thriller series on Netflix, but there's an interesting caveat to his review.

Elliot Stanley's Real Identity Twist & What It Means For His Future

In contrast with season 1, The Tourist season 2 spent most of it investigating how Elliot found himself on the other side of the world with the name of a dead diver, when in his hometown he was known as Eugene Cassidy. The realization about how his half-known past should not influence his future only came after Elliot abducted Donal McDonnell and almost killed him in The Tourist season 2, episode 5, although many still believed him to be his killer in episode 6. The Tourist season 2’s ending finally revealed it was Elliot’s mother Niamh who unrepentantly killed Donal.

All truths coming to light in front of Cassidys and McDonnells alike made the least violent ending possible in The Tourist season 2, episode 6, as an all-out war between the local gangs was effectively avoided. However, the ordeal, coupled with Donal’s abduction, finally made Elliot understand who he was , as he didn’t kill Donal even when he had the chance to, proving once and for all how he was completely different from the past Eugene Cassidy he once was but couldn’t remember. This finally granted Elliot the peace he didn’t have by season 1’s ending or season 2’s midpoint.

How Niamh's Secret Stopped The Cassidy-McDonnell Gang War

Considering how vicious the war between The Tourist ’s new characters in Ireland was, it would have been easy to assume whatever Niamh killed for 42 years before the show could have made the McDonnells rich. Instead, the secret Niamh murdered for revealed how she was actually a McDonnell, born from the affair between her mother and Frank McDonnell’s father. While knowing that she was Frank’s biological sister never stopped Niamh from killing McDonnells, including her nephew Donal, it completely changed things for Frank , because his father wanted him to know and because family loyalty was among his most cherished values.

How Elliot & Helen Could Finally Reconcile Despite Her Doubts

The Tourist season 2, episode 6 opened with Helen visiting Elliot in jail after he was arrested for Donal’s murder and breaking up with him because she was afraid she didn’t know him, no matter how much she loved him. Despite booking a ticket out of Ireland, her curiosity got the better of her, leading to her race against time to discover what Niamh wanted to keep secret. Helen’s choice to enter a pub that could have effectively turned into a war zone within minutes to share the truth thus proved her love for Elliot, saving him and his family.

What made Helen and Elliot’s reconciliation possible was how their approaches changed. Although Helen doubted his answer for a split second when he told her he didn’t kill Donal, Elliot wasn’t attached anymore to learning about his family and giving them the benefit of the doubt . Similarly, Helen didn’t try to find another reason that could lead her to believe Elliot was good, which informed her approach in season 1 and their trip to Ireland in season 2. By letting go of their worst impulses, they could finally focus on who they were in the present and their future together.

What's In The File In The Tourist Season 2's Ending & What It Means

The burning of the file represented a milestone in Helen and Elliot’s relationship because it finally meant the two were at the same point, with both of them only considering what was in front of them and who they were in that present moment in time. However, the revelation that Eugene Cassidy was actually a special agent will surely come back to affect Helen and Elliot’s lives if The Tourist season 3 is eventually greenlit, even if they don’t know the contents of his file.

With The Tourist season 2 being entirely available on BBC iPlayer from January 28 and Netflix from February 29, some time might pass before a renewal is potentially announced, as it will depend on how many viewers it amasses.

The shocking reveal could redeem some of Elliot’s past actions and offer another side to his character, even as he now has the strength to consider who he was in his past and who he is in his present two different people. This also preserves the formula of The Tourist seasons 1 and 2 if a season 3 were to move forward. As Elliot and Helen wouldn’t know why strange things kept happening to them even after they solved the McDonnell/Cassidy issues, it would lead them to yet another haphazard investigation full of twists.

Why Fergal's Final Choice Could Have Never Been To Kill Elliot

Fergal already proved to be different in The Tourist season 2’s beginning, as he counterbalanced Orla and Donal’s aggressiveness toward Elliot with kindness. Freeing Elliot and hiding it from them proved he was more empathetic and better than them. However, learning that he was actually Elliot’s biological son cemented his wish not to hurt him . As Fergal wished to get to know him and wanted to differentiate himself from the McDonnells even more given their mistreatment of his mother and their coercing him into doing things he didn’t like, he could have never planted a bomb in the Cassidy pub.

It's not unusual for a project's scores on Rotten Tomatoes to differ, but critics and audiences are shockingly divided on the TV show The Tourist.

How The Tourist Season 2 Sets Up Season 3

The Tourist season 2 gave infinitely more information about Elliot’s past life to both Elliot and Helen. However, the biggest change it brought on was to their attitudes, as both of them finally realized how they had been too attached to what Elliot’s past meant when in reality it didn’t influence who he was as a person now. The biggest setup was nevertheless the last-minute revelation about Eugene secretly being a special agent, and that could put Elliot on the other side of the law for once in a potential The Tourist season 3.

Jamie Dornan ‘s The Tourist is stranded no more.

Months after the being officially abandoned by original U.S. distributer Max , the amnesia-themed thriller’s forthcoming second season has been picked up by Netflix . Season 2 will bow on Feb. 29. (Netflix has also secured rights to the UK series’ first season, which will arrive Feb. 1.)

Season 2 of  The Tourist , production of which wrapped over the summer, finds Dornan’s memory-challenged character Elliot and Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (the returning Danielle Macdonald) heading to Ireland as Elliott attempts to rediscover his roots. He’s quickly dragged into his past life, with dire consequences.

“I’m incredibly excited to continue the story with  The Tourist ,”  Dornan  said in a statement back in February. “[Series creators] Harry and Jack Williams are brilliant writers and I can’t wait for audiences to see how well Ireland and its characters are utilized to keep them guessing as the tale progresses.”

Great show. Hopefully more people will watch on Netflix.

Oof, now getting to the point where I can’t even remember if I kept watching a show or dropped it…

This is great news. I loved season one and was disappointed when MAX dropped it. Hopefully this will open it up to a new audience

The Tourist: Season 2 Reviews

While it doesn't recapture season 1's singular magic, The Tourist season 2 is a compelling thrill ride thanks to Jamie Dornan & Danielle Macdonald.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 3, 2024

The narrative is heavy with complexities but manages to keep the storylines clear, making them collide for an exciting and tense climax.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 5, 2024

Some on-screen collaborations simply demand more opportunities to keep shining, and Dornan with Macdonald is one of them.

Full Review | Mar 3, 2024

With strong writing and ambitious plot turns that will give you serious whiplash, The Tourist is edgy, brutal, and laugh-out-loud funny.

Full Review | Original Score: 9/10 | Feb 29, 2024

the tourist season 2

I found the first season compelling, if a bit unnecessarily twisty... Amnesia is a TV drama cliché, but “The Tourist” gives it some punch.

Full Review | Feb 28, 2024

On paper, The Tourist season two sounds like it just doesn’t work. Yet somehow, it does. It’s a bit like one of those Magic Eye pictures; you have to actively ignore the finer details to make it all make sense.

Full Review | Original Score: B+ | Feb 26, 2024

The Tourist hooked us in with its story, plus the performances by Dornan, Macdonald and Brune-Franklin.

Full Review | Feb 2, 2024

While “The Tourist” samples from the same trough as “Fargo” and even, at times, “Pulp Fiction,” it’s still a hog-heaven meal all to its own thanks in large part to Dornan and Macdonald.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 1, 2024

Under the capable guidance of the Williams brothers, Dornan is a Jason Bourne-style action hero while also capitalising on his very real knack for comedy.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 25, 2024

The tone remains at a high pitch: life and death encounters have a farcical but thrilling edge, plot twists are compulsory, and villains exude eccentric menace.

Full Review | Jan 17, 2024

Writers Harry and Jack Williams do not care to dilly-dally with explanations, instead trusting the viewer will naturally want to come along for a ride that’s part Coen brothers with a dash of Father Ted.

Full Review | Jan 12, 2024

The result is a crashing mess: it is such a disappointment. How can a story be all plot twists but no plot?

Full Review | Jan 8, 2024

Figuratively and geographically, you’re left wondering where The Tourist could go next.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 7, 2024

Possibly this will all soon click together and make sense, but equally possibly it won’t, because I’m not sure the first series ever did. Doesn’t matter. It’s great. Like Fargo, but drunk.

Full Review | Jan 5, 2024

This raucous, entertaining thriller is the perfect vehicle for the one-time Fifty Shades star.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 3, 2024

While it’s not quite as sharply plotted as the original outing, it still adeptly balances its cranking muscular tonal shifts between exasperated wryness to actual violent chills and back

Full Review | Jan 3, 2024

Writers Jack and Harry Williams are Britain’s answer to the Coen brothers, and the show is so influenced by Fargo that you could transplant many of these characters and scenes straight to Minnesota.

It is a riot: darkly funny and quirky, with great characterisation and unexpected twists. Though, as with Boat Story, I could do without the violence.

Full Review | Original Score: 4/5 | Jan 2, 2024

In refocusing, something of the tension that typified the Antipodean season is lost. All the same, The Tourist is undoubtedly one of the best British thrillers of recent years.

Full Review | Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 2, 2024

"Living in the past doesn't do anyone any favours", says one character, and that pretty much sums up the theme of the series, but boy does it make for some stellar TV, with characters that are deeper and more richly rounded than series one.

The Tourist season 2: US release date, cast, plot and more

The Tourist season 2 sees Jamie Dornan return as Elliot as the story comes to Ireland.

Jamie Dornan The Tourist season 2

Jamie Dornan fans will be delighted that The Tourist season 2 is finally here, with the whole series now available to watch on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Netflix in the US.

With the action switching from Australia's Outback to Ireland, the landscape looks very different from when we last saw Elliot. But whether he's running away from some mysterious pursuers or covered in blood, his situation doesn't seem to have improved too much!

Teasing the new series, Jamie says: "For the second series we pick up with Elliot in Ireland where he tries to discover his real family and get some answers on who he is. Whilst Elliot is in Ireland, he also gets caught up in all kinds of craziness with people trying to kill him."

He adds: "Family is a big theme in this series. We're dealing with a guy who has no concept of who he is, and you can only imagine how terrifying that is, but little by little there are these kernels of information revealed to him and he starts to piece his history together and his family history. It's not that pretty, but it's vital and it's a big part of our story."

Screenwriters Jack and Harry Williams — whose previous screenwriting hits include The Missing and One of Us — have penned the scripts of the follow-up series.

The Tourist season 1 was a big hit when it launched on BBC One and the iPlayer last January, with 12 million people watching it in the first 30 days it was available online. It then went on to have similar success on HBO for US fans. Here's everything we know about season 2...

The Tourist

Warning: contains major finale spoilers for The Tourist season two.

In The Tourist season one, Jamie Dornan played Elliot Stanley, an amnesia sufferer who pieced together unsavoury details about his life before he lost his memory in a road collision. Elliot had been the accountant of an international drug baron named Kostas, from whom he’d stolen $1 million in cash in collusion with Kostas’ con-artist fiancée ‘Victoria’. He’d forced vulnerable addicts including a Russian woman named Lena Pascal to become drug mules, resulting in the deaths of two of Lena’s friends. Elliot had also fallen for Australian traffic cop Helen Chambers, whose forgiveness of his past misdeeds gave him enough hope that he chose not to take his own life in the season’s final moments.

By the end of The Tourist season two , everything had changed. Jamie Dornan was now playing Eugene Cassidy, part of one side in a multi-generational Irish feud between the Cassidys and the McDonnells. Eugene had skipped town years earlier after fathering a child – Fergal – with the wife of a McDonnell man, who’d shot Eugene’s brother Joe dead in revenge, having mistaken him for Eugene.

In the twist-packed second season finale, Elliot learned that his mother Niamh Cassidy, a criminal kingpin who’d spent decades waging war against the McDonnells, was in fact a McDonnell herself and the biological sister of her mortal enemy Frank McDonnell. Niamh’s mother and Frank’s father were a secretly-in-love Romeo and Juliet deal back in the day, and they’re all really one big unhappy family.

Ad – content continues below

What Eugene doesn’t know at the end of season two is that the real Elliot Stanley – a local scuba diver who’d disappeared in 1981 after Eugene’s mother killed him – is likely his biological father. He and Helen also don’t know, after they decided not to read the file on Eugene’s pre-amnesia life, that he’s a deep cover secret agent, which explains his driving/fighting and speaking-Russian abilities. Additionally, he’s a trained ballet dancer, but let’s not focus on that just now.

If any of The Tourist ’s second season left you scratching your long and healthy beard in confusion, we break it all down here.

The Real Elliot Stanley, the Sunk Plane, and the Stolen Love Letters

In the 1950s, Niamh Cassidy’s mother and Frank McDonnell’s father were in love but couldn’t be together because of the longstanding feud between their families. They secretly had a baby together – Niamh – who was raised to be a McDonnell-hating Cassidy, despite being a biological McDonnell herself. In 1981, Frank’s father was on his deathbed in Boston, US, and decided to lay bare his secret perhaps in an attempt to finally stop the bloody feud between the two families. He sent a bundle of love letters Niamh’s mother had written him, to his son Frank.

The plane containing the letters went into the sea. Awaiting an important parcel from his father, Frank hired scuba diver Elliot Stanley to search the wreckage. Stanley, whose widow hinted had been having multiple affairs including with Niamh and possibly resulting in Eugene’s birth, found the submerged plane with Niamh but she cut his oxygen tube and stole the parcel. When she read the letters and realised she was a McDonnell, she buried them and the feud continued for over 40 years.

Eugene and Claire’s Affair, Fergal, Donal and Joe

History repeated itself to some extent with Eugene and Claire’s story, but instead of a love affair between a Cassidy and a McDonnell, theirs was between a Cassidy and the wife of a McDonnell. Eugene and Claire had an affair that resulted in the birth of Fergal, who was raised as the son of Donal McDonnell. Donal was a violent man who physically abused his wife, and he was eventually shot dead by Niamh Cassidy – who turned out to be his biological aunt. That made Eugene and Donal first cousins, meaning that young Fergal is indeed a blood relative of Donal and Frank McDonnell, just a first cousin once removed/great nephew instead of a son/grandson.

When Donal discovered that Fergal was biologically Eugene Cassidy’s son, he planned to kill Eugene but mistook Eugene’s older brother Joe for him and killed Joe instead.

Helen’s Coma Dream, Book, Private Detective and the Cowboy’s Return

For anybody checking their phone during episode five, it could have been quite the stumper. In it, Helen had surgery after being shot in the stomach by Lena Pascal and seemed to recover at remarkable speed. She and Eugene flew to Australia, where they rented an apartment with a dodgy oven and started a new life. She was at home writing a book while secretly investigating the secret of Elliot Stanley and the missing parcel from Frank McDonnell’s father, while the couple grew further and further apart. Then the dead Cowboy from series one turned up to torment her, the walls started closing in, and nothing made any sense.

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

If it seemed odd, that’s because none of the Australia stuff was real – it was all a dream Helen was having while in a coma after Lena had shot her; she and Eugene had remained in Ireland the whole time. Helen’s subconscious was working out her mistrust of Eugene, her need to dig up the past, and her instinct about Eugene’s mother Niamh with the private detective story, while the beeping oven alarm she kept hearing was actually the beep of her heart monitor in the hospital.

Did DS Ruairi Slater Kill Mary?

No, she died of cancer, but he did break the law by failing to have her body collected and keeping it in his basement in a rebuilt museum of their home, along with a mannequin dressed in a wig and Mary’s clothes. He also broke the law when he kidnapped Helen and held her against her will in the creepy basement, and despite promising to turn himself in, didn’t. At the end of season two, Ruairi was still a free man and acting as a police detective, along with his new-found pal Ethan Crumb – Helen’s newly reconstructed ex-fiancé from season one .

Why Did Lena Pascal Collude With the McDonnells?

Absolute nonsense, that bit, wasn’t it? It would have been much simpler for Lena to get her revenge on Eugene for all the drug mule horrors when they were still on the same continent. Instead, she bafflingly contacted his enemies in Ireland, got them to send her a photo of Eugene as a younger man, which she then sent to the police station in the remote Aussie town where he’d unexpectedly ended up with amnesia, to lure him back to Ireland, where she later followed him, just so that she could shoot his girlfriend in the stomach and disappear. Transporting all that heroin must have addled her brain.

Finally, Eugene is Really a Deep Cover Secret Agent?

That’s what the file he was sent by an anonymous stranger said – not that he knows about it because he’d (apparently) burned it before reading.

Season three, anyone?

The Tourist season 2 is here. Emmy-nominated heartthrob Jamie Dornan returned to our screens in January as Elliott Stanley, a man we first found in an Australian hospital with no recollection of who he was, or why everyone wanted him dead. Season 2 shifted the action from Oz to the Emerald Isle as Elliott and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) made ever more troubling discoveries about Elliott’s past.

The Tourist, created by siblings Harry and Jack Williams, the Emmy-winning producers of The Missing and Fleabag, was the most watched drama of 2022 in the UK and a hit internationally, with season 2 proving just as popular domestically.

After learning some hard home truths about our amnesiac anti-hero, did Elliott manage to balance the karmic scales this season? No spoilers here of course, but we can say that season 2, saw Helen escort him to his native Ireland where they found themselves unwittingly in the middle of a bitter family feud and also hunted by brand new enemies.

Yet, as Niamh Cassidy (Joyride’s Olwen Fouéré) cautioned Helen in the series' trailer, “You don’t know him sweetheart. You don’t even know his real name.”

The second outing also welcomed Conor MacNeill (Industry), Diarmaid Murtagh (Vikings), and Francis Magee (Kin) to the cast, and delivered even bigger twists and turns than the first season of this compelling crime drama series. Read our guide below for how to watch The Tourist season 2 online and from anywhere in the world.

The Big Picture

  • The Tourist Season 2 continues its captivating storytelling in Ireland, filled with dark twists and unpredictable writing.
  • Jamie Dornan shines as the leading man, showcasing versatile acting and dynamic emotions alongside co-star Danielle Macdonald.
  • The series maintains its unique tone, blending genres like horror and comedy with influences from filmmakers like the Coen Brothers and David Lynch, as well as films like Saw and Psycho .

When The Tourist first premiered on Max in 2022, its smartly written ending felt like the perfect conclusion to the puzzling, dark comedy. The neo-Western reminiscent of Coen Brothers classics like Fargo and Blood Simple about one man’s amnesia-filled romp across the Australian outback was a captivating odyssey blending action, mystery, and dark humor. But despite showrunners Harry and Jack Williams and series star Jamie Dornan , insisting it was never meant to be more than one season, an abundance of critical acclaim and an astounding audience of 11.4 million viewers following its BBC run proved there was more story to tell. With The Tourist making its anticipated U.S. debut on Netflix this month, Season 2 tonally hits all the right notes for a uniquely twisted, action-thriller that is genuinely fun and engrossing .

Originally produced for the BBC and premiering Season 2 on its new streaming home at Netflix on February 29, The Tourist continues to show its strengths by not wasting any time. Trading the desert-hued ambiance of the Australian outback for lush, sprawling vistas of Ireland where Dornan’s character Elliot Stanley is from, things take a wild turn when he returns home for answers. Though the premise feels similar to the first season, as Elliot still can’t remember who he is, The Tourist remains self-assured while crafting a real sense of distinction through unpredictable writing and authentic performances that will keep you glued to your seat.

What Is 'The Tourist' Season 2 About?

After a heartbroken Elliot (Jamie Dornan) swallows a bottle of pills and former Constable Helen Chambers ( Danielle Macdonald ) decides to give him another chance in the Season 1 finale, we learn the two nomads are eagerly traveling the globe together. The series quickly establishes their relationship, revealing the pair are very much in love . While they are in the middle of their Southeast Asian trip, Helen tells Elliot she received a letter from someone named “Tommy,” who claims to know him. When they try and meet up with the mysterious stranger in Ireland, Elliot is shortly kidnapped by the Donal family in what is also one of the funniest scenes from the dark comedy , which finds Dornan running up a hill in a heartstopping chase as his assailants play The Pretenders’ “Don’t Get Me Wrong.”

Though it appears he’s escaped after tumbling down a long emerald hill, Elliot's pursuers find him and things get a little ugly — think Saw . Meanwhile, Helen calls the police and reports to Detective Ruairi Slater ( Conor MacNeill ) that her boyfriend is missing. While at the station, she meets Niamh Cassidy ( Olwen Fouéré ), who was sent a photograph of her kidnapped son Elliot – except, his name is “Eugene” and the last time she saw him was when he was 27.

How 'Reacher' & 'The Tourist' Depict Two Different Types of Action Hero

The strong, silent type is a mainstay of on-screen alpha males, but is that changing?

As Elliott and Helen try to find the truth and get stuck in the most outlandish situations while apart, their energizing love story raises the stakes for how The Tourist has evolved from Season 1 . Through smart and precise pacing that locks down interest through thoughtful writing, a lot happens across the show’s six episodes. As Elliot navigates all he learns about his past and discovers a bloody rivalry between two warring families, the Irish countryside is the perfect setting for his psyche as we go through literal peaks and valleys thanks to dark twists and turns. Whereas a barren and bleak outback served as a strong character in Season 1, the second season's new landscape is a clever addition to this chapter of Elliot’s life.

Jamie Dornan Is the Beating Heart of 'The Tourist' Season 2

One of the show’s greatest appeals is its cast. Showcasing a magnetic versatility, Dornan proves he is a tremendously watchable leading man . While audiences might be quick to think of him as Christian Grey, the actor has distinguished himself as a real force with a refreshing energy. In taking on the complex role of a man continually finding new information about himself, Dornan makes profound use of his diverse acting strengths as a character who has met some painful, fragmented truths. As Elliot makes sense of who he is, the actor’s approach blends complex emotions eloquently through striking expressions and delivery. These nuances, filled with wide-eyed panic and unease, find Dornan seamlessly embodying a multitude of emotions while remaining dry, humorous, and humbly charismatic.

Complimenting Dornan in the series is Danielle Macdonald, who is every bit as magnetic as her co-star . If Dornan is The Tourist 's heart, Macdonald is its compass. Her infectiously likable personality is a delight on-screen as she makes the darker tones of the series brighter with her genuine warmth . With all her character’s quirks and a discerning eye for the particulars, Macdonald’s portrayal gives off some big Marge Gundersen à la Fargo vitality. Her chemistry with Dornan is effervescent, giving the series the boost it needs amid shadowy elements .

The supporting cast rounds out The Tourist most impressively. While Season 2 sees the return of Helen’s (hilariously) awful ex-boyfriend Ethan ( Greg Larsen ) as he tries to make amends, his appearance makes for some laughable moments between him and Dornan’s Elliot. Olwen Fouréré joins the series in its second season as Elliot’s mother/badass crime lord matriarch. While her performance is focused and deep, she adds a nice weightiness to the series’ more shadowed tones. Also new to the show is the Garda detective played by Conor MacNeill ( best known for The Fall , which also stars Dornan), who portrays a gripping character rooted in some deeply grim events. While his character takes a serious turn and creates one of the show’s more WTF moments , it’s an absorbing juncture straight out of the shadiness of a Coen Brothers film and sets the tone for what more we can expect from these bizarre characters surrounding Elliot.

'The Tourist' Season 2 Excels With Its Smartly Applied Influences

With strong writing and ambitious plot turns that will give you serious whiplash, The Tourist is edgy, brutal, and laugh-out-loud funny. Taking audiences on an unpredictable journey through the glorious backroads of Ireland, there is a lot to love about this show and the various genres it pulls up most naturally . Playing with horror through strong nods to the aforementioned Saw and even Psycho , The Tourist is clever and gripping in every way imaginable without ever feeling overdone.

Thanks to atmospheric and unsettling sequences, The Tourist is every bit a neo-Western that sprinkles in the manic traits of the Coen Brothers, David Lynch , and Quentin Tarantino films. It might sample some of these filmmakers’ best works, but it’s a series all its own due in part to its enigmatic plots and characters. Accentuating themes of antiheroes and identity all wrapped into six compelling hours, showrunners Harry and Jack Williams have managed to create a world that evokes a deeply spirited, edgy, and pointed rhythm . Woven through a distinct narrative approach characterized by sharp dialogues and bold visuals, the series’ kinetic energy can get quite dark but is challenged by some very uncommon storytelling threads. The Tourist Season 2 can feel quirky and outlandish thanks to its consistent chaos, but it works; there is a distinguishable stylishness to the Williams siblings’ production that encompasses some deeply nail-biting suspense and snappy humor .

The Tourist

The Tourist remains pitch-perfect and hits all the right notes for a uniquely twisted and fun action-thriller.

  • The Tourist remains self-assured while crafting a real sense of distinction through unpredictable writing and authentic performances.
  • Dornan makes profound use of his diverse acting credits as a character that has met with some painful, fragmented truths.

The Tourist. (L to R) Danielle Macdonald as Helen Chambers and Jamie Dornan as Elliot in episode 201 ... [+] of The Tourist.

Viewers can’t get enough of Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald in BBC’s Australian thriller The Tourist. If you’ve already finished Season 2, you’re likely wondering if there will be a third season of The Tourist following the twist ending in the finale.

The first season follows an unnamed man (Dornan) being chased through the Australian outback. When his vehicle veers off the road and crashes, The Man wakes up in a hospital without knowing who he is or how he ended up there. It’s clear that people are trying to kill him, so Dornan’s character — with the help of Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (Macdonald) — set out to discover his true identity before it’s too late.

In the second chapter, released on Netflix on Feb. 29, Elliot and Helen embark on a journey to Ireland, hoping to unravel the mysteries surrounding Elliot’s true identity. When they get there, their plans take an unexpected turn when confronted with the dangerous aftermath of Elliot’s past. Everything they thought they knew turned out to be something different entirely.

Initially, The Tourist was only supposed to be a six-episode limited series. “The idea was always just to do one series,” Dornan told Entertainment Weekly in February 2024. “It was pitched as a limited series of six episodes and I was very on board with that.”

Macdonald echoed a similar thought to Variety Australia in December 2023. “We’d heard they kind of wanted a Season 2, but it was only ever meant to be a mini-series – it was never meant to have another season,” the Dumplin ’ actress explained. “A little while later, I was chatting with the writers, and they were like, ‘I kind of miss this world,’ and I was like, ‘Me too, it’s been really fun.’ Then, a month later, they emailed me saying that they wrote a pilot for Season 2. And I was like, great, give it to me now.”

The first season of The Tourist became the UK’s most-watched drama in 2022, earning an impressive 4.6 million views for the first season premiere. After its immense success in the UK, The Tourist was renewed for a second season in February of last year. The first two seasons dropped on Netflix in the US in early 2024.

Will There Be The Tourist Season 3?

The Tourist. Jamie Dornan as Elliot in episode 201 of The Tourist.

The BBC has not announced whether The Tourist will return for Season 3. However, the show’s lead star told Entertainment Weekly in February 2024 that there have been “conversations” about a Season 3, but noted that he is “very busy, I think, for the next couple of years.”

Dornan added that if a third season does happen, it will likely be set in Holland, as that’s where his and MacDonald’s characters moved to at the end of Season 2. “There’s probably a world where it happens in Holland in some capacity, if they were to do more, which wouldn’t be a bad thing,” he explained. “I like the Dutch, they’re an interesting bunch, and always really fun, and it’s a beautiful place. But who knows!”

Dornan previously told Radio Times that one of the reasons why he returned for Season 2 was the location. “My thinking was, ‘Where are we going? Like, if we’re doing this, where are we going?’” Dornan admitted. “Because it was a bit of an upheaval to go to Australia, and the idea of going again so soon after… I mean, these guys don’t have kids, I have three kids.”

Dornan is the father to three daughters, Dulcie, Elva, and Alberta, who he shares with his wife, composer Amelia Warner. The British actor continued, “But luckily, Jack and Harry [Williams, creators] had plans to make it [Season 2] something closer to home, and I probably approved those plans pretty quickly.

(Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Tourist Season 2.)

What Will The Tourist Season 3 Be About?

The Tourist. (L to R) Jamie Dornan as Elliot, Diarmaid Murtagh as Donal McDonnell and Danielle ... [+] Macdonald as Helen Chambers in episode 204 of The Tourist.

If The Tourist Season 3 does happen, then the next season will likely pick up with the cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. In the finale, Eugene was sent a file with details about his past from a local newspaper. Eugene and Helen decide not to read the file because they no longer care what it says. However, when Eugene places the envelope in the fire, viewers catch a glimpse of the cover while it burns away.

There, it reveals Eugene was actually a special agent as far back as 2005 and is on a “general assignment” for the “Sentinel” bureau — which perfectly sets up a third season of the Australian series.

“I think it’s purposely open-ended,” Dornan explained to Netflix ’s Tudum . I think this time they are leaving that to all kinds of factors – of if and when and how that would happen to do more – and to see if people want more,” he said. “But that’s also a timing thing. Everyone’s busy! I’m busy, Danielle’s busy. So we will see, but they’ve definitely left the option open, I think.”

Stay tuned to learn whether The Tourist will be renewed for a third season.

The first two seasons of The Tourist are streaming on Netflix.

The Tourist season 2 potential release date, cast, plot and everything you need to know

Will Jamie Dornan return?

preview for Jamie Dornan Transformation Timeline

The Tourist spoilers follow.

Jamie Dornan's latest show was far twistier and way more riveting than your average BBC thriller, which is why we really hoped it would be renewed for a second season. And now, it has been !

Clearly, we were not alone in wanting more. At the start of 2022, the BBC revealed that The Tourist pushed iPlayer to its biggest festive day yet with 22 million streams across the service . That's a new record for the BBC.

In March, it was confirmed by Charlotte Moore, BBC’s Chief Content Officer, that there will be more adventures for us to get stuck into.

"In its first 30 days, 12 million people watched The Tourist – that's twice as big as the largest show, Stay Close , on Netflix," she said. "The power that the BBC has to reach millions of people is far greater than we perhaps realise."

With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about The Tourist season two on BBC.

The Tourist season 2 potential release date: When will it air?

While we do know that season two is at the very least on its way, they're going to test our patience on this one.

We know it will be back for six new hour-long episodes, and the Emmy-winning producers and screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams (who created Baptiste, The Missing and Liar ) will be back as well. But apart from that, we know nothing.

Taking into consideration the series dropped on New Year's Day 2022, and at the time of the announcement in March no filming had commenced, it's unlikely we'll see anything for a while yet.

We'd hasten to guess at some point in 2023 at the earliest.

The Tourist season 2 cast: Who's in it?

The Tourist's first season revolved almost entirely around Jamie Dornan's amnesiac "hero", but his fate was left up in the air by the end of that truly depressing finale .

After all, The Man (now with his name reinstated as Elliot) made several attempts on his own life after discovering that, pre-amnesia, he was involved in a drug cartel and was directly responsible for the lives of two women he forced into trafficking for him.

That'll do a number on anyone if they truly believed they were a good person.

Dornan had previously told RadioTimes that The Tourist was originally set up to be a limited, one-off series. But, after 12 million people tuned in to watch within the first 30 days, the Fifty Shades of Grey actor discussed the possibility of him reprising the role for a second time.

"I guess it's a little bit open-ended with the end, people still have questions," he said. "Obviously we had good plans for it, wanted it, but the response to it, as you know, has been insane and the amount of people [who have] watched it, and the love for it is very real.

"I saw something the other day that they said that there's talk of... they'd be looking into how they could do a second series of it if there is a want, and it seems there is a want," he added. So who knows, the plan was only ever to play The Man once, but we'll see."

Dornan recently admitted he had never played a character before who didn't know who he is, so he had to pull on experiences where he felt "lost or afraid" to inspire him in his performance.

"I've never had to approach a character before who doesn't know who he is, so it was almost like a total opposite process for me of not allowing yourself a backstory and accepting every single discovery he has as something new," he told Variety .

"I often tried to consider myself in my most vulnerable moments, where I've felt lost or afraid, and draw on those."

"I think the way it plays with tones, often so abruptly swinging from drama to comedy," he added. "Just when you think you have a handle on what's going on, you're proven wrong."

So, if Elliot does survive and make a return, then we can probably assume that Dornan will be joined in season two by Shalom Brune-Franklin as Luci and Danielle Macdonald in the role of Helen Chambers.

During an interview with Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes on This Morning (via The Express ), Danielle was asked if she would ever return for a second season. To which she replied: "Would I do another season of this? I would, of course!

"I loved the writing, I loved the character [and] I loved the world, I would hands down do it again but I have no idea if there is even any intention of that."

In terms of the other cast members, all of the following could also return for season 2:

Genevieve Lemon as Sue, Danny Adcock as Ralph, Damon Herriman as Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers, Alex Andreas as Dimitri Panigiris, and Maria Mercedes as Freddie Lanagan.

Of course, it's not likely that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Alex Dimitriades will be back as their characters died in season one.

The Tourist season 2 plot: What will happen?

At the end of season one, viewers watched Elliot find out that he was a drug trafficker before losing his memory, subsequently sending him into a spiral in which he drinks a bottle of vodka and swallows a whole lot of pills in an attempt to end his life.

Meanwhile, a disgusted Helen has had time to think about who he is and is advised by a friend to accept him for who he is now. As Elliot lies dying, she messages him an emoji of a burrito, which was previously said to be Elliot's 'happy place'. After seeing the message, we see Elliot smile before the credits roll.

"After I finished the series, I called Shalom [Brune-Franklin] instantly," Danielle MacDonald told us before the finale aired. "And I was like, 'I can't talk to anyone about this, because no one's read it, and I'm not allowed to say anything, so I need you to talk to me about it. We just need to talk about this whole situation.'"

Before the final episode was made available to us, Digital Spy asked Dornan and Brune-Franklin if they felt like season one tells a complete story or whether they would want to return one day.

The pair joked : "The whole series ends with Armageddon, so life doesn't exist anymore." But now that we have seen the finale, it's clear that there's at least some truth to this when it comes to the fate of Dornan's character. To read more on that and his chances of survival, check out our piece about the ending right here .

But what do the creators of The Tourist think? While chatting with RadioTimes , Harry Williams said : "I would love to make this show again with these people. I'm not entirely sure it's possible. I love the tone, I love the world. It's been our lives for three years and we've been very, very involved with it, more so than any other show."

"We've loved every minute. Normally you're sick of it by this point having watched 900 cuts of one episode but I still love it and I'd love to do it again."

Co-creator Jack Williams added that they are "talking about how we could return to this world", adding: "Yeah, this world and this tone. I feel like we're not done with that. In terms of the story, we'll see how it goes if people like it."

Leading man Jamie Dornan explained in March 2022 that he wouldn't be against a return, but noted to Entertainment Weekly : "That wasn't the plan, to be honest. We all signed up for one."

However, he's not against the idea of going back to Elliot's life and uncovering more, explaining it's a similar situation to The Fall , the beloved crime show in which he starred alongside Gillian Anderson. " The Fall was meant to be one series," he said. "There was big demand for The Fall, obviously, and we did a couple more [seasons].

"In the UK and Ireland and Australia, and anywhere it's been so far, people seem to love The Tourist , so who knows? I know conversations are being had. So we'll see what we get to, but I would love to."

So, taking into account the finale now we've seen it, there are two ways this show could go. The first would be to make it some kind of anthology, where the entire cast is wiped out and everything is reset, with a new 'tourist' to focus on with as much trouble as Jamie Dornan before them.

The second would be to allow the character of Elliot to survive and try and make peace with what he's done in his past in some way. Guess we'll find out either way soon enough.

Is this the biggest Covid summer wave ever?

The U.S. is in what may end up being its biggest summer wave of Covid, with no end yet in sight.

“If you just talk about infections, this is probably going to end up becoming the largest summer wave we’ve had,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and former White House Covid-19 response coordinator. “It’s still not as big as the winter waves, but it is starting to get close.”

It's not only in the U.S. There's been a worldwide surge in infections in recent weeks, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, technical lead for Covid at the World Health Organization, said in a briefing this week . The proportion of tests coming back positive for Covid in Europe is above 20%, with wastewater data suggesting case numbers may be two to 20 times higher than what's being reported, Van Kerkhove said.

The best way to estimate how much virus the U.S. is coping with is wastewater data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , because many people just test at home when they get sick, if they test at all.

A masked commuter on the metro in Washington

Nationally, the CDC tracker lists levels of Covid as "high," with the Western U.S., including Texas and California, showing some of the highest levels of virus. Eastern states, such Florida and North Carolina, are also reporting very high levels of virus in the community.

Wastewater can't identify how many cases a day there are; coronavirus levels are much higher nationwide than they were this time last year.

This year’s summer wave also began earlier than last year’s, Jha said. Case numbers started rising in early June, compared with July and August 2023.

Jha expects this wave to peak in the next few weeks, with case numbers becoming much lower around September — about the time the updated Covid vaccines targeting the KP.2 strain , a descendant of the JN.1 variant, should be available.

The new vaccines should get final approval from the Food and Drug Administration in the coming weeks. At that point, the CDC will recommend who should be first in line for the shots.

Jha said that to protect against a winter surge, you should aim to get vaccinated in October at the earliest, although any time before Thanksgiving should be fine.

Andrew Pekosz, a virologist at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, didn't expect the summer waves to be so pronounced four years into Covid.

“I, and many other virologists, thought that we probably would see summer waves for maybe another one or two years, but we didn’t expect them to increase significantly,” he said. “We thought they would continue to just sort of be smaller and smaller as time went on, as we transition to what we hope is going to be just one winter surge of Covid cases per year.”

Latest Covid news

  • CDC: Covid fell to the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., down from 4th.
  • Covid variants are spreading fast: When to rest, when to isolate and when to test.
  • A new version of the Covid vaccine is targeted to the highly contagious KP.2 version of the virus.

The latest CDC f orecast has a mixture of variants currently in circulation including, KP.3, KP.3.1.1 and KP.2.3, descendants of the JN.1 version of the virus that was circulating earlier this year. Some scientists collectively refer to the variants as “FLiRT” — a reference to their genetic changes — and they are believed to be some of the most contagious yet.

The factors behind the current spread are most likely the more transmissible variants, combined with people’s spending more time indoors because of hot weather, he said.

“Besides that, there’s not much that we can sort of put our finger on to say this is what’s driving this summer surge," Pekosz said.

For the most part, hospitalizations for Covid this year have remained lower than last year. In recent summer months , there has been a slight uptick , with levels higher than they were this time last year. Fortunately, deaths due to Covid remain the fewest they have ever been.

“We’re seeing people that are getting admitted and test positive for Covid, but the severe pulmonary complications of Covid-19 are extremely rare,” said Dr. Michael Phillips, chief hospital epidemiologist for NYU Langone Health in New York City. “Where we see the dramatic increase in numbers is people that are coming into our [emergency department] or people coming into our ambulatory sites who test positive and go home.”

The test positivity rate at NYU Langone Health, or the proportion of patients with symptoms who test positive for Covid, is 12%, a sixfold increase in just the last couple of months.

Last month it had 1,357 positive tests, over twice as many as in July 2023, when it had 562 positive tests. Just 12 of the Covid patients last month were admitted to the hospital for Covid-related illnesses.

“Our hospitalization rates are down, so even if we are testing and seeing more [Covid], it seems to be having less of an impact on our susceptible populations,” Phillips said.

Jha said that what happens this winter is impossible to predict but that there could be a silver lining to a large summer wave.

“A big summer wave tends to lead to a little bit of a smaller winter wave and vice versa, just because there’s a little bit more immunity in the population,” he said.

Netflix’s The Diplomat is heading back to its situation room.

The Keri Russell-led drama released two first-look photos of season two on Thursday and announced the next installment’s release date.

'frozen 3' to hit theaters over thanksgiving in 2027, ryan murphy's 'grotesquerie' gets fx premiere date, divulges story details.

“In this high-stakes political drama, the transcendence and torture of long-term relationships between countries and people takes center stage,” the release continues.

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum , creator Debora Cahn reveals more of what to expect from season two.

Season one ended with Russell’s Kate realizing that the British prime minister was involved in the attack on the British warship that started the series, after she and her colleagues had spent the season trying to determine the foreign adversary.

“Now she has to prove it,” Cahn teases.

But that could be challenging due to the “special relationship” between the U.S. and U.K.

“The U.S. and the U.K. don’t spy on each other,” Cahn adds. “In fact, they share all their intelligence. So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”

Cahn also shares more about the literal bomb that exploded in the finale, appearing to hit Kate’s colleagues and estranged husband, saying the “politically motivated” attack “takes some lives and shatters the rest. The marriage she thought was over, the relationship she thought was beginning … all of it, in pieces.”

Though Cahn doesn’t specify which “relationship,” the first season teased a mutual attraction between Kate and the British foreign secretary, Austin Dennison (David Gyasi).

At the time of season one’s release, The Hollywood Reporter critic Daniel Fienberg wrote that the show was “a pure star vehicle for  Keri Russell ” and “superb at exploring the context of diplomacy.”

Less than two weeks after the series debuted, the streamer renewed   The Diplomat  for a second season.

Season two releases Oct. 31, about a year and a half after the first installment hit Netflix in April 2023.

The Diplomat also stars Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear and Ato Essandoh, and is executive produced by Russell, Cahn, Janice Williams, Peter Noah and Alex Graves. Allison Janney will join the cast for season two, playing Vice President Grace Penn.

As for Penn, who viewers didn’t meet in the first season, but learned there was an effort underway to replace her with Kate due to a possible scandal, Cahn says, “The VP thinks Kate’s after her job. She’s not entirely wrong. Kate thinks she understands the VP. She is mistaken.”

Time to consider using the remaining stored soil water in irrigated corn and bean fields.

Corn field receiving irrigation in late season

The last few irrigations of the season require some of the most important water management decisions of the year.

An unneeded irrigation may mean wasting 1 to 3 inches of water and 2 to 5 gallons of diesel fuel per acre. Even if your irrigation costs are only $10/ac-in, each inch reduction is worth about $1,300 for each quarter-section pivot. For example: If a field of silt loam soil is left at field capacity, it’s missing out on 5.5 inches of off-season storage, worth about $7,200 — not even accounting for the leaching loss of nutrients. Nitrogen loss has been shown by research to be about 5 to 10 lbs/a for each inch of water that moves through the profile.

Across Nebraska, during most years, enough precipitation will be received from October through May to refill the soil profile on irrigated fields. For example, the Grand Island area gets about 14.2 inches during this timeframe, and even the Scottsbluff area will receive about 8.6 inches on average.

The final decisions on furrow-irrigated fields need to be made sooner due to the typical higher application amounts with flood, while the final decisions on the pivot or subsurface drip irrigated fields can be delayed to take advantage of any rainfall that may occur. With this in mind, Nebraska Extension publication Irrigation Scheduling Strategies When Using Soil Water Data (EC3036), and the video series How to Schedule Irrigations with Soil Water Data were developed. The resources focus on season-long irrigation scheduling and wrap up with end-of-season scheduling.

Many irrigators apply more water than necessary toward the end of the irrigation season because irrigation applications continue at a rate they have grown used to during the middle of the summer, even though the crop is using less water per day. Water use goes down because the crop is getting more mature and the days are getting shorter and cooler. The average crop water use rate for corn drops from around 2.1 inches per week at silking to only about 1.2 inches per week by the full dent stage. This 40% reduction requires irrigators to adjust their thinking about how much water needs to be applied each week.

So, calculating the amount of water needed from rain and irrigation for the crop to reach maturity becomes important starting in early August.

Knowing approximately how much plant available water is remaining in the active root zone is critical for calculating the last few irrigations and will be referred to as the "remaining available water." The best method for determining the amount of remaining soil water is to use a soil water monitoring system. Table II (below) shows the typical amount of water that will be in the different soil types and can be used to help estimate the volume of water. Remember to use the top 4 feet of soil for the active root zone and plan to use the soil water down to 40% of plant available water (60% depletion) after the dough stage for corn/sorghum and the R5 stage for soybeans/dry beans.

Weekly precipitation map for August

Predicting how much rain the field will receive is difficult, but if you do not plan for the possibility of rain, it is easy to apply too much irrigation water. Figures 2 and 3 show the long-term weekly average rainfall for August and September in Nebraska.

Method to Estimate Late-season Crop Water Needs

To determine how much water from rain and irrigation will be needed to mature the crop, use the method described below and information from Table 1 (below).

Step 1. Based on the current crop growth stage (identified in columns 1 and 2), look up the approximate days to maturity in column 3 and the water use to maturity in column 4.

Step 2. Add the approximate days to maturity to today’s date to estimate the crop maturity date.

Step 3. Subtract the water use to maturity from the remaining available water (as determined by soil water sensors or monitoring). If the number is positive, it indicates adequate soil water to mature the crop; however, if the number is negative, it indicates the additional amount of water the crop will need from rain and irrigation to reach maturity. The following sample calculations illustrate how to use this method.

Determine how much water from rain and irrigation will be needed to reach crop maturity, assuming the field is located in central Buffalo County, the date is Aug. 10, and the corn crop is at the R4 (dough) stage. For this example, the remaining available water is 2.25 inches if the top 4 feet of soil is allowed to dry to 40% of available water-holding capacity.

  • Referencing Table 1 , corn at the R4 stage should take approximately 34 days to mature and will use about 7.5 inches of additional water to reach maturity.
  • Add 34 days to today’s date to get the approximate day of maturity, using Aug. 10 as the example.
  • The calculation shows that 5.25 inches of water will be needed from rain and irrigation to mature the crop without limiting yield.

Determine the average rainfall per week for the remaining weeks of crop growth and add it into the prediction of how much water may be needed from irrigation. This number should be recalculated each week until the crop is mature.

  • Use Figures 2 and 3 to determine the average rainfall per week in August and in September for central Buffalo County.
  • The chart shows that, on average, central Buffalo County gets 0.60 inch of rain per week in August and 0.55 inch per week in September. The crop is expected to continue growing for three weeks in August and two weeks in September.

The chart predicts that if average rainfall is received over the next five weeks, only 2.35 inches of irrigation would be needed to mature the crop.

Using this information for a center pivot that is set to apply one inch of water per irrigation, the suggested recommendation would be that the system should be off for the next few days to use some of the remaining water. The next inch of water should be applied within the next seven days. Then, the next irrigation should be recalculated using updated soil water readings.

The best way to use the remaining water is to delay the start of the last few irrigations a few days each time and react to any rain that might occur during the period. Slowly using the water in the lower portion of the root zone starting in early to mid-August is much better than keeping the profile full until the very end and expecting the crop to use the water all at once.

Differences in Late-season Irrigation Timing for Corn/Sorghum and Beans

Corn/sorghum and beans are somewhat different in respect to crop water use as they approach maturity. For example, if hot dry windy conditions are experienced in September, daily crop water use will increase. However, since corn/sorghum develop based on heat units, they will use more water per day but will mature in fewer days using about the average amount of water shown in the chart. Beans develop based on day length. So, with the same hot, dry, windy conditions, they will use more water per day and will still mature at about the same date, resulting in more water use than predicted in the charts. Thus, it is very important to monitor soil water in beans until they reach maturity.

Texas A&M Aggies men's basketball has yet to land a commitment for the 2025 recruiting class but coach Buzz Williams and staff are making sure it doesn't stay that way for long.

Per reports from Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports, the Aggies have secured an official visit with talented four-star power forward Sebastian WIlliams-Adams. The Houston native and St. John's High School product is the No. 3 overall player in the state and 33rd in the nation, per 247's player rankings.

Buzz Williams

Williams-Adams will visit College Station starting on Friday, Aug. 30, which will mark the first of other notable OVs he has schedueld with some elite programs. He'll also be making visits to Auburn (Sept. 6), Kansas (Sept. 13), Purdue (Sept. 20), SMU (Sept. 27) and Oklahoma State (Oct. 4). Per Jenkins' report, Williams-Adams will also be visiting the Baylor Bears at some point during the basketball season.

Williams-Adams has also received offers from programs like Alabama, Houston, Texas, Texas Tech, Tennessee, Kansas State and many more.

Though the 2025 class remains a work in progress, the Aggies have put together a talented recruiting class headed into next season from both the transfer portal and the high school ranks. Earlier this offseason, Texas A&M landed portal commitments from SMU's Zhuric Phelps, Minnesota'a Pharrel Payne and Nebraska's C.J. Wilcher. Williams and co. also secured signatures from four-star guard Andre Mills and three-star George Turkson. Three-star forward Chris McDermott committed to A&M on April 30 but has yet to officially sign.

The Aggies will begin the regular season on Monday, Nov. 4 at UCF.
