A Keane Live show is a thing of great joy.

As a fan since the early days, I have been to many different venues and it doesn't matter whether you are standing with 200 other souls or seated in the big Arena, Keane always deliver.

They have a large hard core international support (people traveling for hours to queue outside a tiny venue at early o'clock in the morning is quite 'normal') and always ensure that they interact with their fans as much as possible and seem to genuinely appreciate the support they've had over the years.

Tours are usually about promoting albums, and so people can be disappointed if their favourite doesn't get played, but by then end of the gig, no-one ever goes home unhappy. Most of them have no voices the following day because sing-alongs are quite central to the Keane live shows.

Now that they've decided to take a break, a lot of us are left wondering what's next.

My advice, if you ever get the chance to see them live, go along, you will be pleasantly surprised. I've seen them more than 20 times (which makes me a lightweight compared to some of the fans I know) and have never left a gig without a song in my head and a great big beaming smile....

Went to the Apollo in Manchester to see Keane.I can honestly say that this was the best gig I have ever been to and i've seen most of the major names over 30 years! Sound and lighting were excellent and the band's performance was flawless.Fantastic energy on stage and they endeared themselves to the audience with their natural warmth and were very humble considering how much success they've already had.The playlist covered alot of the new album but also included all the old favourites and the songs were very well intergrated into the setlist. Tom's voice has to be one of the best and emotional in modern music and "A bad dream" and "Bedshaped" brought tears to a few eyes. Absolutely magnificent show and highly recommended and I guarantee you won't see a better gig.

The only downside was that they did't come on until 8.45 so we had to miss the encore as we needed to catch the last train home.

Keane were on FIRE last night!! I didn’t think the venue would be right for them being such a formal setting, however it really worked. Audience didn’t talk during songs/ in between (so annoying when people do that!) & the sound & acoustics were fantastic. They played all the great songs plus many of their new tracks, had the place absolutely rocking. Engaged with the crowd & was an absolute joy to see them. Outstanding

Concert itself was good but at some point you get distracted by the fact that everybody around you is filming the concert with some crappy cheap phones some of them not even filming the stage but the screens for minutes.

So yeah, it's not the band but the quality of the fans :)

Also, the sound quality in the Movistar Arena could have been better. A lot of echo and not much deepness in the sound.

I am a huge fan of shows. I manage to go at least 3/4 shows per year because i’m convinced that music is one of the most beautiful things life can give us. And keane is beyond that. I’ve seen them 10 years ago, and I already loved them by then, but this time was even better. Definitely on my top 3 of best concerts i’ve ever been to. A MUST GO for anyone. Thank you❤️

I have seen Keane 7 times in concert, and they NEVER fail to disappoint! They really know how to put on a show, and Tom Chaplins voice sails across the audience, enchanting you for more. I have been listening to Keane since they came onto the scene in 2005, and I highly recommend seeing them!

I love the show!!

Tom’s voice sounded better than ever.

The show as emotional and the band connected with the audience at a very personal level. It felt really good to see them together again as I missed their last concert in the Bay Area.

Bravo to a great come back!!

They were really good and lovely, I have always loved them a lot, their sound is still amazing! But this is my first time being so closed with them and it was a wonderful experience

It was well organised by Rought Trade and their staff were lovely

They never disappoint, it's always a pleasure to see them live, I'm a big fan and can't be very objective but they are Soooo good and even better every time. It was a bit more than two hours which passed so quickly but I'll never get enough of them

Amazing comeback gig from Keane. They’ve definitely improved since I last saw them 6 years ago. The audience was stood up throughout the 2hr performance and the atmosphere was fantastic. Welcome back Keane the new album is the best yet.

As indie music enjoyed its resurgence in the mid-2000s, UK south coast three-piece, Keane, offered a thoughtful counterpoint to guitar squall. Their debut album, Hopes And Fears , featured well-written songs, with delicate melodies. The public thought so too, as the album was certified Platinum an amazing nine times. They subsequently stormed the charts and released a series of intelligent and diverse albums.

Keane use a piano (or a synth) as the lead instrument rather than a guitar, which is traditional, especially as a three-piece band. Since the start of their career, the band have sold over 10 million albums worldwide.

‘Fever To Tell’: Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Genre-Defying Debut Album

‘mardi gras’: over and out from creedence clearwater revival.

Principal writer Tim Rice-Oxley’s material, sweetly delivered by Tom Chaplin, sounded perfect on radio, from the wistful ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ and ‘Everybody’s Changing’ through to the assured Bowie -influenced ‘Spiralling’. Echoes of  Elton John , The Beatles , U2  and Genesis (who, like Keane, met at public school) can be heard in their work, and like those artists, the group have gone on to enjoy considerable success in America.

Keane add great sweetness to their pop, and their piano-based music sounds immediately anthemic. But they weren’t simply a studio outfit; Keane became an enormous live draw on both sides of the Atlantic, (fortunately captured on a variety of fine works, such as Live Recordings: European Tour 2008 and the 2010 material recorded at the iTunes Festival) with the intensity and passion of this group of friends projecting beautifully from the largest of arenas.

Keane’s piano-driven pop/rock is created by vocalist Tom Chaplin, drummer Richard Hughes and pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, three childhood friends from the small town of Battle in East Sussex, England. Formed in 1997, the group started out as a college-aged cover band. Guitarist Dominic Scott was also part of this early incarnation, having previously played cover songs with Hughes and Rice-Oxley in a band named the Lotus Eaters. Keane toured the East Sussex circuit for several years while internalising the epic sounds of their setlist, which included songs by Oasis, U2 and the Beatles. The quartet began performing original material in 1998, although Chaplin left for Edinburgh University shortly thereafter to study art history. The move proved to be brief, as he returned to London in 1999 and doubled his efforts with Keane.

Buoyed by Chaplin’s tenor vocals and Rice-Oxley’s inventive keyboard effects, the group made its studio debut in 2000 with a self-released single, ‘Call Me What You Like’. ‘Wolf at the Door’ followed one year later, but the band still struggled to find its momentum as Scott left the line-up in July, leaving the band without a guitarist. Keane continued performing as a trio and happened upon their big break in December 2002, when Fierce Panda Records representative Simon Williams (who had helped discover Coldplay several years prior) was summoned by a friend to attend a Keane gig in London. Williams was impressed with the band’s performance and offered to issue Keane’s next single, ‘Everybody’s Changing’, on the spot. The limited-edition release became a success on UK radio and attracted attention from major record labels, several of whom began to swarm around the group.

Keane signed with Island Records in 2003 and released ‘This Is the Last Time’, the band’s final single for the Fierce Panda label before the year was up. They made their major-label debut one year later with  Hopes And Fears , which hit the top of the UK album charts during its first week of release and beat out Morrissey’s You Are the Quarry . The ballad ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ became a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and Keane received two BRITs (for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Album 2005) while earning a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. The album went on to become the second highest-selling record of the year in the UK, barely losing out to the Scissor Sisters’ debut.

Keane opened several shows during U2’s 2005 tour in support of their debut, which was followed several months later by the Live Recordings 2004 EP. When it came time to return to the recording studio, the band once again enlisted producer Andy Green and fashioned a darker album titled  Under the Iron Sea . Arriving in 2006, it debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200, topped the UK charts and spun off the band’s most successful single to date with ‘Is It Any Wonder?’ Keane chose to pursue a different agenda for their next project, however, returning in 2008 with a slightly retooled sound – including the presence of electric guitar – and a new album,  Perfect Symmetry . Two years later, they changed direction yet again with the release of  Night Train , an eight-song EP featuring collaborations with the Somali rapper K’NAAN. Released in 2012,  Strangeland , the full-length follow-up to Perfect Symmetry , married that album’s use of guitars and über-pop sensibility with the anthemic, piano-led sound prevalent on the band’s first two albums, particularly Under the Iron Sea .

Keane talk ‘Hopes And Fears’ 20th anniversary reissue and tour: “I still feel very connected to the songs”

Tom Chaplin tells NME about the band’s early years, finding their sound, and structuring the setlist for the anniversary tour

Keane press shot

Keane have announced a 20th anniversary reissue and 2024 world tour for their debut album ‘Hopes And Fears’ – get all the details and read NME ’s interview with frontman Tom Chaplin below.

The album will be reissued on May 10, 2024 – 20 years to the day since its original release, and on the same night that the band play The O2 in London as part of the UK and Irish leg of the anniversary tour. Support at these gigs will come from The Sherlocks and The Lathums .

“I feel like I’ve lived quite a lot of life in the last 20 years,” Chaplin told NME . “To me, it does actually feel like quite a long time ago. The release of this album was the point at which all our lives changed very dramatically, and it feels like a marker of time, after which so much stuff, both good and bad, has come along. It sticks very clearly in the memory.”

‘Hopes And Fears’ was released in 2004, six years after Keane formed, and Chaplin said that he is grateful in retrospect that the band were able to take their time out of the spotlight and find their voice slowly and organically.

“There wasn’t the same level of access to information at the time,” the frontman remembered. “We didn’t really understand how to make it all work – we were just three kids from a small town in the middle of nowhere, so we didn’t we didn’t have many reference points. We didn’t really know what we were doing.”

Keane

As a result, Chaplin said that six years from playing their first gig to releasing ‘Hopes And Fears’ “felt about right”.

Recommended

“We had to learn what we were best at as musicians, and had to learn how to write songs,” he said. “My voice developed lots over that time as well, and it was a long and fairly slow learning curve for all of us.

“It was a relief in a way that we were able to do nearly all of our early gigs in private, and there’s not very much that remains [online]. I saw a video the other day of us playing at the Bull & Gate [in Kentish Town, London] in around ‘98, ‘99. It’s very sweet, but we definitely weren’t the finished article at that point.”

Across the half a decade between forming and releasing the debut, Keane had to contend with the departure of founding guitarist Dominic Scott, and spent years crafting the songs that would end up on the debut album.

One particularly revolutionary session came in a dilapidated French mansion with producer James Sanger. “I remember thinking that it was the start of an interesting relationship between us and James,” the frontman said. “We were his guinea pigs for this plan he had to turn the mansion into a big studio complex, and he obviously saw something in the songs.”

In the departure of Scott, Chaplin said that the make-up of the ‘Hopes And Fears’-era Keane came together almost by accident. “All the pieces were kind of improving and getting better, but they needed assembling in the right way,” he told NME . “Dominic leaving forced us into this new world of having to do things in a different way. At that point we were a fairly standard rock band, but when when Dominic left, it left us with this quandary of it just being the three of us. With James’ help, and Tim [Rice-Oxley, songwriter] moving from the bass to the piano, suddenly everything fell into place.”

Talking of Rice-Oxley’s songwriting for ‘Hopes And Fears’, Chaplin said: “I remember thinking, ‘Oh god, he’s suddenly gone up a level’. Yeah. I heard everything that he had written and was blown away by it. After two years of working shitty jobs in London, we moved back to our parents’ houses in the countryside and would meet up and write in Tim’s mum and dad’s house. I remember Tim presenting us with a few of the songs that he’d written that summer. I remember hearing ‘Somewhere Only We Know’ and ‘Everybody’s Changing’ and just thinking, ‘Holy shit’.”

The frontman added: “What Tim’s always been very good at is articulating heartbreak. He was able to draw on his many heartbreaks and translate a lot of it into the songwriting, but not in an overly confessional way. His great skill at that point was to write songs that had a universality to them. During those years, my voice also began to grow, and I wasn’t trying to copy other people any more – I began to sing in my own voice.

“I’ve had enough sadness, loneliness, fear, anxiety and heartbreak in my own life for that to feel like a really good combination, my singing and his writing. It’s hard to pinpoint an exact moment when that happened, but it certainly went from being this very disjointed thing to having this chemistry that seemed to really work.”

Discussing the legacy of the album, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and is the ninth best-selling album of the 21st century in the UK, Chaplin said: “I still feel very connected to the songs. When I sing them live, they still surprise me, and something will hit me that hadn’t hit me before, like a new way of hearing the song.”

As for how the anniversary shows will look, and whether they will play ‘Hopes And Fears’ in full from front to back, Chaplin said that discussions are still in progress as to the setlist and plans for the show.

“I went to see The Flaming Lips doing ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots’ live and I’ve seen David Gray do ‘White Ladder’ too, and it’s an interesting quandary because albums were never written with the intent of playing them live in order. One of our plans with ‘Hopes And Fears’ was not to frontload it, but we ended up putting nearly all of the big singles near the front of the album.”

Chaplin continued: “Until we actually get in a room and start playing it, we won’t really know how it will work out, but we’ve got some ideas about how to make it work. My experience of going to see these anniversary shows and seeing people play the record, it’s nice to hear it from start to finish, because that’s how you know the album to be.

“‘Hopes And Fears’ ends with ‘Bedshaped’ too, which feels like quite a final note to end on, and we often end our [regular] gigs with that. We’ll be figuring it out in the coming months.”

As for the future of the band beyond the anniversary celebrations, Chaplin was looking ahead to what comes after their 2019 album ‘ Cause & Effect’.

The frontman ended: “It feels more hopeful and positive and full of ideas than it has done for a very long time.”

A brief history of piano-rockers Keane

Everything you need to know about the band in a nutshell

Keane may have had a rather tumultuous career over the last 25+ years, but their popularity around the world has never wavered - even when they went on hiatus for six years. Thankfully, they reunited - releasing their fifth album in 2019 'Cause and Effect', which peaked at Number 2 in the UK, proving that their reunion was well worth it.

With five studio albums now under their belt, 2024 will mark 20-years since the release of their debut 'Hopes and Fears'. Embarking on a world tour in honour of their early work, here's a little more about the piano-rockers...

WATCH: Keane - Everybody's Changing (Live)

Keane: members of the band.

Keane is made up of Tom Chaplin on lead vocals and guitar, Tim Rice-Oxley on piano and bass guitar with Richard Hughes on drums. Jesse Quin joined the band in 2007 as an additional member, playing bass, electric and acoustic guitar, before joining as a permanent member in 2011. Dominic Scott was a founding member, playing electric guitar, but left in 2001.

When did Keane form?

In 1995. Tim Rice-Oxley was studying classics at University College London, and decided to form a band with his old school friends - the original line-up of which included founder and guitarist Dominic Scott and Richard Hughes on drums, and they mainly focused on covers of U2, Oasis and The Beatles. They were called 'The Lotus Eaters' at the time.

Also studying at UCL around the same time was none other than Chris Martin of Coldplay fame. After hearing Tim's piano skills in 1997, he was keen (sorry) to snap him up for his own band, but Tim refused as he had his heart set on his own group, later stating that he was "seriously interested" in the offer.

This sparked Tim to recruit another old school friend into the band - Tom Chaplin, although Dominic and Richard didn't love the idea to begin with. The change in line-up also meant a name change for the band.

Where did their name come from?

Having originally been called The Lotus Eaters, Tom Chaplin's addition to the group caused them to rethink the name, and instead named themselves after a friend of Tom's mum, Cherry Keane, who passed away and left money for the musician's family. Tom later said: "I used some of the money to see me through the harder times with the music." They shortened the name to Keane not long after.

WATCH: Keane - The Way I Feel (Live)

What was keane's first single what was their first album.

The band's first-ever single was 'Call Me What You Like', released in 1999 on the band's own label, Zoomorphic. They sold copies of the track after live performances in an attempt to start a following for their music.

The group were invited to a recording studio in France, where they wrote four tracks that would later appear on their debut album, 'Hopes and Fears', but guitarist Dominic Scott chose to leave the band shortly after the recording stint as he felt the band "wasn't going anywhere".

Dominic's pessimism started to have an effect on the remaining members of the band, but a gig in December 2002 at the Betsey Trotwood in London brought good fortune for Keane as Simon Williams - who'd discovered Coldplay - attended, and later released their first commercial single, 'Everybody's Changing', in 2003.

After a record label battle over Keane, they signed to Island records and the song became the first single released from debut album 'Hopes and Fears', in 2004.

What other albums have Keane released?

After the success of 'Hopes and Fears' which peaked at Number 1 in the UK and was certified 9x Platinum, Keane got back in the studio in 2005 whilst on tour, writing their second album 'Under The Iron Sea'.

The record was released in June 2006 and spawned singles 'Is It Any Wonder?', 'Leaving So Soon?' and 'Crystal Ball', peaking at Number 1 and scoring a 3x Platinum certification in the UK. Album track 'A Bad Dream' later appeared in an episode of Scrubs in 2007.

Third album 'Perfect Symmetry' was released two years later in 2008, containing 'Spiralling' and 'The Lovers Are Losing' and going to Number 1 in the UK with a Platinum certification. The 'Night Train' EP was released in 2010 - and although it's technically not an album, it did contain eight new singles, so many fans consider it to be the band's unofficial fourth record.

'Strangeland' was the band's official fourth album. It was released in 2012 and peaked at Number 1 in the UK as well as receiving a Gold certification. The record spawned singles 'Silenced by the Night', 'Disconnected' and 'Sovereign Light Café'.

The band put out 'The Best of Keane' in 2013, and then promptly went on a hiatus so that the band's members could focus on solo projects. Six years later, Keane announced that they would be reuniting, and put out fifth album 'Cause and Effect' in September 2019, which peaked at Number 2 - becoming the band's first album not to reach the top spot.

On 9th April 2021, Keane announced on their social media platforms they would be participating in Record Store Day 2021 Drop 2 on 17th July, with the special early release of their EP 'Dirt' on 12" vinyl, featuring four previously unreleased tracks from 'Cause and Effect' sessions.

This came with the announcement that the full release of the EP would be on 13th August 2021.

Two decades on from the release of their debut album, Keane are celebrating with a remastered reissue of 'Hopes and Fears' on Friday 10th May 2024.

As well as releasing a remastered version of the record, they will head on their six-date UK arena tour from 3rd May 2024, up to 10th May.

When did Keane split up and why?

After releasing 'The Best of Keane' in 2013, the band decided to "take a bit of time out from being Keane", according to Tom, and went on an indefinite hiatus. Although that remains the official reason for the split, there were a few things bubbling away under the surface that contributed to that point.

Tom's well-publicised problems with drink and drugs came to a head, and after the birth of his daughter in early 2014, he decided he needed to get clean, having previously received treatment from The Priory in 2006.

Tim's marriage had broken down in 2012, reportedly due to him being on tour so often. He was arrested for drink driving in 2014, and he told CBS in 2019: "It left me in a place, eventually, where I really needed some help, I suppose."

Keane's solo projects, tom chaplin.

Tom Chaplin went solo following Keane's hiatus, releasing his debut solo album 'The Wave' in October 2016. It peaked at Number 3 in the UK and spawned the single 'Quicksand', as well as the 'Carried By The Wave Tour' which saw him sing at venues in Brighton, Bristol, Nottingham, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham and London. He also released Christmas album 'Twelve Tales of Christmas' in November 2017.

As a side note, Tom appeared on The Masked Singer in January 2022, performing as the character Poodle and making it to 8th place. He sang 'Rocket Man' by Elton John, 'What's New Pussycat?' by Tom Jones, 'Symphony' by Clean Bandit and Zara Larsson and 'Unwritten' by Natasha Bedingfield.

Later that year, Tom released his third solo album, 'Midpoint', on 2nd September 2022, which included songs such as 'All Fall Down' and 'Overshoot'.

Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin

Tim and Jesse continued to work on their country music side-project, Mt. Desolation, which they'd began in 2010. Their self-titled debut was released in 2010, and follow-up 'When the Night Calls' came out in 2018.

Are they back together.

Thankfully, yes! Tom reached out to Tim in 2017, telling CBS: "I hadn't realised just how deep his pain had been with his marriage breaking down and how much of a hole he'd been in. And then once I heard the songs on 'Cause and Effect' , you know, it really made sense."

They announced the news in a Facebook post in March 2019, revealing that they'd been working on new music together - and released their album 'Cause and Effect' in September of that year, as well as the 'Dirt' EP in August 2021. They are back to stay - even heading on a world tour in 2024.

Have Keane ever played the Isle of Wight Festival?

They sure have - Keane took to the IOW stage in 2007, playing on the Sunday as special guests, before returning in 2019 to perform as the closing act of the festival.

Have keane ever played glastonbury.

Keane have played Glastonbury no less than four times - taking to The Other Stage in 2004 before headlining the Pyramid Stage just a year later in 2005, then performing a last-minute set on the Avalon Stage in 2010 and returning to the festival in 2019 on the Acoustic Stage.

Awards won by Keane

Keane have received plenty of nominations and awards over the years - most notably winning the BRIT Awards for Best British Album ('Hopes and Fears') and Best British Breakthrough Act in 2005. They were also nominated for Best British Group and Best British Single for 'Everybody's Changing' that year, as well as a nomination at the 2010 BRITs for Best BRITs Album of 30 Years, losing out to Oasis for '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?'

The band have received two nominations at the GRAMMY Awards over the years, getting a nod for Best New Artist in 2006 and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group With Vocals for 'Is It Any Wonder?' in 2007.

Tim took home a hugely prestigious Ivor Novello Award in 2004, winning Composer of the Year, and the band also received a nomination at the Mercury Music Prize Awards for Best Album in 2004 for 'Hopes and Fears'.

Keane: Let The Music Move

In June 2021, Keane took to their Instagram to announce their support for Let The Music Move. The movement invites artists and fans to call on the UK government to do more to support the future of the music industry.

Sharing information about the movement to their Instagram, Keane wrote: 'Today we are joining our fellow artists, music professionals and fans to call on the UK government to do more to support the future of the music industry, and mitigate the Brexit-related impacts of restrictions, costs and delays on European touring. #LetTheMusicMove'.

Event Details

British band Keane announce new headline show taking place at The O2 on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 May 2024, as part of their world tour in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of their Debut Album ‘Hopes and Fears’.

Keane release a special remastered version of ‘Hopes and Fears’, undoubtedly one of the best debut albums ever. On Friday 10 May 2024, exactly 20 years after its initial release, the same day, the band play The O2 arena as part of a world tour.

‘Hopes and Fears’ was a landmark album for Keane and has set all kinds of records in the process. It’s one of the best selling albums in UK chart history having sold over 2.5 million in the UK in its first year, and a million in the USA propelled by their absolutely classic song ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. ‘Hopes and Fears’ is 9x platinum in the UK, a remarkable achievement. The album has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Keane emerged alongside a new vanguard of bands that would change the shape of music: Snow Patrol, Scissor sisters, the Killers and Coldplay. They were the first to create a sound solely revolving around keyboards which enhanced the emotional pull of their songs. ‘Everybody’s Changing’ from ‘Hopes and Fears’ became a fan favourite and a top five hit.

In 2004 Keane were the biggest selling British artist in the UK. The following year they won two BRIT Awards: Best British Album for ‘Hopes and Fears’ and British Breakthrough act award as voted for by Radio 1 listeners.

‘Somewhere Only We Know’ has enjoyed a recent revival on Tik Tok going viral in Indonesia which lit the spark for a global renaissance of the track which is currently

clocking up two million Spotify streams a day, and in the past 12 months has become Island Records’ biggest selling single. In total it has been streamed over a billion times.

This year’s tour will celebrate Keane’s acclaimed body of work from their imperious debut ‘Hopes and Fears’ through to their 2019 studio album ‘Cause and Effect’

Lead singer Tom Chaplin says; “I remember standing by that amazing old mixing desk at Heliocentric Studios where we made Hopes and Fears, listening to an early mix of Somewhere Only We Know. I had this feeling that we’d come up with something that had an extra bit of magic. Making music is so often a process full of doubt…but on this occasion there was something undeniable about what we’d created. Clearly a lot of people felt the same when the album came out!”

Founding band member and songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley said: “When I think about these songs, I still picture us playing them in little rooms in pubs around the UK. I remember how exciting it was watching the crowds start to grow. Those songs opened the door to another dimension for us; everything that has happened in our lives since then was born out of that moment. It’s an incredible privilege for us that people are still listening after all this time.”
