Cannon Beach Oregon

Nothing stokes nostalgia for the 1980’s more than checking out the original Goonies filming locations in Oregon! There was a time after the movie was released when every 80’s kid wanted a treasure map and to go in search of One-Eyed Willy’s lost treasure!

Any Goonies fans planning an Oregon trip should make sure Astoria is on their list as it was here that the majority of the iconic Goonie movie scenes were filmed. We’ve put together this list of our favorite Goonies filming locations near Astoria, including a map of all the locations and tips for visiting them all.

Goonies Filming Locations

Most of the Goonies filming locations are dotted around the town of Astoria in Oregon so movie fans should aim to spend most of their time here. Make sure to check out the other things to do in Astoria while you search for all the locations! We hope you have as much fun exploring the Goonies filming locations as we did, just try not to truffle shuffle too much! It’s also possible to visit most of the locations on a day trip from Portland .

1 | County Jail (Oregon Film Museum): Jailhouse

This is easily one of the most recognisable Goonies filming locations in Astoria. The county jail in Astoria was the jailhouse where Jake Fratelli was held until his family helped him escape. It’s possible to visit the cell where he was held and the actual jeep that was used by the Fratellis is usually parked out in front of the jailhouse.

The county jail is now home to the Oregon Film Museum which celebrates the history of film-making in Oregon. The self-guided tour of the museum is short at less than 30 minutes but visitors can see the cell where some of the Goonies scenes were actually shot.

2 | The Goonies House

Address: 368 38th Street, Astoria:   Click here for exact location

This is probably the most famous Goonies filming location in Astoria and the one that all Gonnies fans will want to see in person. The owner of the house has welcomed back Goonies fans in recent months (some of our readers have mentioned there is a donation box on the drive). Visitors are requested to respect parking restrictions and only access the drive way by foot.

There is no street parking close to The Goonies House, so you may want to park a few blocks away and walk to The Goonies house.

The Goonies Filming Locations tip: as with any private property, please respect the owners’ wishes when visiting the Goonies house.

5 | Astoria Coffee Co

Address: 304 37th St, Astoria. Click for exact location

Be sure to make a quick stop at the cross walk opposite Astoria Coffee Co in Astoria. It is here where Rosalita is seen crossing the street as the Fratellis speed past with the cops in pursuit.

6 | Lower Columbia Bowl

Address: 826 Marine Dr, Astoria

The scene where Chunk, holidng his pizza and milk shake, sees the car chase through the window of is shot from the Lower Columbia Bowling alley.  Today the building is still operating as a bowling alley and you can see the glass where Chunk viewed the car chase from.

7 | Flavel House Museum

Address: 441 8th St, Astoria

One of the most beautiful buildings in Astoria is the Astoria Historical Museum. In the movie the Goonies cycle down the hill past the museum in search of One Eye’d Willie. Mikey’s father, Mr Walsh, worked as a museum curator. Visitors to Astoria can do a self-guided tour of this historic house that lasts around an hour.

8 | Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park is home to several Goonies filming locations that visitors will instantly recognise from the movie.

One of the best-known locations is the spot where the Fratelli’s had their hideout and where the Goonies started their treasure hunt. Known as the Lighthouse Lounge in the movie, the hideout was purpose-built for filling and taken down afterwards. Today you can visit the location of the scene where a small structure stands in place of the hideout in the movie.

The second scene is when the Goonies stop on their bikes when searching for the start of the treasure map. This scene is from along the Indian Beach trail through Ecola State Park.

There a numerous other scene shot in the park and the road where Mikey’s brother (Brandon) is pushed off his bike is in the area.

9 | Cannon Beach

Address: Cannon Beach

The magnificient Cannon Beach is where the Fratelli car chase came to an end. It was the location of the 3rd Annual ORV Ralley and was filled with cars and spectators in the scene. Cannon Beach is also where the final scene from Point Break was filmed

10 | John Warren Field

Address: 1898-1828 Exchange St, Astoria Click for exact location

The scene with Andy at cheer practice was filmed at John Warren Field. Unfortunately, the site is now the location the Columbia Memorial Hospital but some of the grassy area from John Warren field is still visible.

11 | Cauldron Point – Goat Rock Beach California

Address: Goat Rock Beach, Sonoma Coast State Park Click for exact location

It’s often thought that the final scene in the movie, where One-Eyed Willie’s ship sails into the sunset, was not shot at Indian Beach. In fact, the final scene from the Goonies was shot at Goat Rock Beach in California.

You can park on Duane St. Pedestrians are at least tolerated on.l 38th St. There is a box for donations. Please put some cash in it to express gratitude. This is a sacred place for some of us. Show respect lke you would in a church. My son was 7 years old when we saw this movie. His name is Michael but we didn’t call him Mikey

Thank you for the info, and so recent (Nov 2020), good to know about the donation box, it’s well worth it!

Thank you. Very helpful to us “older” generations who watched it with our little boys.

Still looks great! – September 1 2022 Donation for sure 😊

I was 5 going on 6 when the movie was released. It was definitely one of my favorites. In fact those closest to me called me Mikey – some still do to this day. 🙂

Thanks for the info. I have been to Oregon and Washington a few times, and this is for sure on my list for a future trip.

PS It’s Monday, 11:30 am. No other pilgrim’s here now. I parked beside Data’s house…the blue one on the corner.

We went and saw the house today. DO NOT DRIVE UP THE DRIVEWAY! The owners just recently let people start seeing the house again and one way that can be ruined is by ignoring the clearly stated signs. Great experience.

I’m going to Astoria in July 2021 and cannot wait to visit these locations. I am MOST excited about the house now being accessible by foot!!! I will definitely leave a donation next month if I can walk up there.

We visited the Goonies house and Data’s house this evening. Signs clearly say no cars but that you are welcome to walk the driveway up. Further, as mentioned there is a donation box at the house. Well worth the stop, and the owners have some awesome gardening skills!

Fab, thanks for the update! Hope you enjoyed it!

Can you stand on the porch

I was able to leave a donation via Venmo! The owner was very sweet and commented on it. Such a cool bit of history!

Awesome place to visit one of the greatest movies of all times!

one of the greatest? you mean the GREATEST

Well, maybe one day we will fly from Britain to Oregon to see Astoria. Fingers crossed. 🙂

Spent a week in Astoria in Sept 2023, visited several movie scenes but mostly the Goonies locations. Astoria is a wonderful place that we just came across during a month touring Oregon, the trolley ride along the front is a must. Oregon and WS are fabulous to visit.

The Goonies , a 1985 film born from an idea by Steven Spielberg and developed through the skillful direction of Richard Donner, is most certainly considered to be a real cult movie, as confirmed by the enormous success that it continues to enjoy even today. The film is set on the marvelous west coast of the United States , between Oregon and northern California , a setting that undoubtedly contributes to making what is already an undoubtedly successful film, that has become a true model of the children’s adventure genre, even more evocative.

So here I am describing the main locations frequented by Mickey, Chunk, Mouth, Data, Brand, Andy and Stef, as well as the mythological Sloth and the antagonists Jake & Francis Fratelli, led by their “tender” Mom. Before proceeding though, anyone who wants to join the world of the Goonies must recite the oath of affiliation:

“I will never betray my goon dock friends; We will stick together until the whole world ends; Through heaven and hell, and nuclear war; Good pals like us, will stick like tar; In the city, or the country, or the forest, or the boonies; I am proudly declared a fellow Goonie”.

However, its undoubted triumph can be objectively proven by seeing how it has passed unscathed through several generations and successive eras of video reproduction devices. It has been screened in cinemas all over the world since 1985 and, passing through the era of VHS tapes, DVDs, multimedia files and Blu-Ray, it has reached the present day, where it can also be streamed in HD directly on TV.

The immortality of this film production is easily explained through a balanced mix of multiple and fortunate elements . First of all, the script is composed of the most classic ingredients that stimulate dreams and adventures: pirates, treasures, “booty traps”, love, friendship, puzzles and dangers. The rhythm, with which the facts are embroidered, is rather tight as in the opening titles and, throughout the narrative, there is no downtime. The dialogues between the characters are always essential, straightforward and never banal ; many expressions have also entered the current language.

Goonies Locations in Astoria

The large company of teenagers featured in the adventure grew up in Goon Docks , a neighborhood in Astoria , in the state of Oregon. It is from the name of the fictional neighborhood that the title of the film and the nickname of the gang derives. Astoria, in addition to being one of the most beautiful coastal cities in the state , is a town with a rich historical past, evidenced by its many fine period buildings. Founded in 1811, it was the first settlement west of the Rocky Mountains .

All of the town’s locations that appear in the film are concentrated in the first part of the story. The prison, from which Jake Fratelli (Robert Davi) escapes assisted by his brother Francis (Joe Pantoliano) and Mama (Anne Ramsey), is located at 732 Duane Street , Downtown.

Astoria Oregon Goonies Locations

Today, the former county jail has been conveniently transformed into the (1) Oregon Film Museum , dedicated to the films shot there. The main attraction is the cell, where Jake pretends to hang himself on the rails with a pipe hidden behind his back. The item is now carefully placed on the same bars, along with the note that attracts the attention of the guard who finds the apparently dead body of the bandit in the film’s opening scene. The writing on the note is:

You Schmuk! Do you really think I’d be stupid enough to kill myself?

Many other items of memorabilia, again relating to the Goonies adventure, are on display in the rooms carved out of the former prison: the much coveted treasure, with the very skull of Willy the Orbo ; Data’s (Jonathan Ke Quan) raincoat, equipped with his prodigious and ever-useful inventions; the wallet of Chester Copperpot, the explorer who disappeared many years earlier during the ill-fated treasure hunt; and the locket found by Mickey Walsh (Sean Astin) in the attic of his home along with the famous map of the legendary pirate. In addition, the black jeep , used by the Fratelli gang to escape from prison, is often parked by the museum curators right outside the entrance.

goonies filming locations astoria

After Jake’s dramatic escape, the police chase begins in an attempt to hunt down the fleeing Fratelli gang. As the cameras capture the four-wheeled race, a few spots in the city are captured on film and the characters in the play are introduced. Behind cheerleader Andy (Kerri Green), police cars parade by as she is intent on performing choreographed rehearsals at (2) Warren Field , bordered by 18th Street, 20th Street and Exchange Street. There is no American football field here today, however, for the 30th-anniversary reunion since the film’s release, the actors were spotted on the very same practice field.

Rosalita (Lupe Ontiveros), the Walsh household’s maid, is almost run over by the 4×4 driven by Mama Fratelli as she crosses the (3) street intersection of Lief Erikson Drive and 37th Street , where the Astoria Coffee Co. cafeteria stills stands on the corner. In a cut scene, the Goonies enter this establishment and Mickey compares the treasure map to an actual map of the area for sale at the counter.

The line of cars then speeds past the (4) home of Mouth , aka Clark Devereaux (Corey Feldman), distracting him from his job as his father’s plumbing assistant. On the (5) East Mooring Basin Boat Ramp , on whose adjacent platforms beautiful sea lions can be seen basking in the sun, Stef Steinbrenner (Martha Plimpton) dives into a tank to retrieve a magnificent specimen of plastic crab, while cars whiz by on the dock behind her.

The last city spot filmed during the chase is the (6) Lower Columbia Bowl , at 826 Marine Drive. Here, Lawrence “Chunk” Cohen (Jeff Cohen), exhilarated by the rare and spectacular scene along the way, manages to pull off the feat of simultaneously smashing a slice of pizza and a strawberry milkshake, soiling the inside window of the gambling hall. Whoever happens to come to these parts will not be able to resist a game of bowling and the purchase of a T-shirt with an embossed picture of Chunk.

Of course, the Walsh family lives in the upper part of town, in Goon Docks. The (7) house of the Goonies , located at 368 38th Street, is the true center of operations for the friends who are often moved to adventure by the secret treasures hidden in the attic of Mr. Walsh, curator of the city’s museum.

astoria oregon goonies house

Next to the Walsh brothers’ house, at number 344 on the same street , there is also the (8) house where Data lives with his family. The proximity of the two houses gives the little genius of Chinese origin the opportunity to test his acrobatic inventions… the imprudent and unorthodox mission “Wings of the Wind” is filmed in the opening bars of the film.

Once in possession of Willy the Ogre’s map, the gang sets off on a treasure hunt riding their BMX bikes, the most fashionable bicycles of the 80s, before the advent of mountain bikes. The boys pass by (9) Flavel House Museum , waving fleetingly to Mickey’s dad, intent on lowering the American flag from the pole of the city’s main museum; the beautiful building is located at 714 Exchange Street .

The historic home can be visited and the guided tour takes about an hour. Captain George Flavel’s former quarters are strategically located on one of Astoria’s hills; even today, the structure retains the dome from which the maritime entrepreneur could observe and monitor ship traffic.

cannon beach goonies

South of Astoria, the spectacular Oregon Coast stretches for hundreds of miles. In this wild and rugged stretch, tourists love to practice various activities ranging from trekking to whale watching. The most famous and touristic locality is surely Cannon Beach , whose natural symbol is the Haystack Rock , a monolith 220 feet high that stands out near the city beach.

It is on this stretch of beach that, in order to finally escape from the police during the aforementioned chase, the Mother of the Brothers gang shrewdly chooses to mix in with the other 4×4 vehicles in the (10) Off-road Rally that starts near the Haystack Rock.

goonies ecola state park

From the northern end of the beach, we find (11) Ecola State Park Road , a road leading to the park of the same name preserved by the State of Oregon. Two important sequences of the film were shot along this winding road: the first when Mickey stops his bicycle and, getting his bearings using the monolithic rocks scattered along the coast, manages to identify the place from where to start the search for the entrance to the underground tunnels built by the pirate to hide his capital of gold, diamonds and other precious stones. The second sequence shows Brandon who, having launched himself in pursuit of his younger brother on a children’s bicycle, is hooked onto the car of his love rival Troy (Steve Antin), who gives him a dangerous push towards the escarpment.

After the entrance of the park, the ascending road leads to the first parking lot from where some paths branch off along the coast. On that headland, near the clearing for cars, and along the slope in a northerly direction, stood the sinister and apparently disused (12) Restaurant of the Fratelli gang , from where the Goonies access the underground tunnels that lead to the treasure. Mouth, translating the clues written in Spanish on the map, shows the route to his friends: “Diez veces diez, ten times ten; stretching feet to nearest northern point; that’s where you’ll find the treat…” .

The hideout, purpose-built for the play, was demolished soon after filming was completed. Today, in place of the famous hiding place, there is a small hut , a useful reference for rapidly locating the exact location.

goonies film locations

After having presented the beautiful places immortalized in the initial part of the film on the Oregon coast, we can now move to California for the description of the fascinating beach portrayed in the closing lines of the film. It is precisely the coastal area of Jenner , in Sonoma County (which we have already mentioned in our article on Napa and Sonoma Valley ).

From the main headland of (13) Goat Rock State Beach , two policemen on quads are seen heading north, spotting the Goonies in the distance and helping them (one of the two policemen, the one on the right with white hair, is Richard Donner!). In the same scene, the seven protagonists walk on the wide, jagged beach, extremely tired from the dangerous adventure that has just ended.

Behind them, on the opposite side of the headland, you can see a cluster of interesting rock formations a few feet from the shore, which make the view truly unique and scenic. We’re at (14) Cauldron Point , the site where the wily, brave and resourceful Goonies pay their last respects to Willy the Orb. Looking in a southerly direction, the group wistfully observes the pirate ship finally heading for the horizon after being trapped for hundreds of years inside unexplored caves and caverns.

For the Oregon portion of the route, there’s nothing better than sleeping in the Goonies’ town of Astoria , where you’ll find a number of accommodations. For the Goat Rock Beach area in California you can consider either San Francisco (1 hour and 40 minutes away) or the many small towns in the vicinity of the beach. Here are a number of useful links for finding accommodations in these areas:

11 Goonies Filming Locations You Can See Today

Reid July 27, 2019 Destinations , Family Travel , Resources 5 Comments

the goonies 1985 what town was goonies filmed in

What kid in the ’80s didn’t want to be a Goonie? This 1985 Steven Spielberg movie directed by Richard Donner and starring Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin is now considered a cult classic, and the adventure comedy is still one of my all-time favorite movies. So, when we were road tripping up the Oregon Coast , I made sure to plan some time to wander around the area of Astoria to see some famous goonies filming locations.

Where was The Goonies Filmed?

The majority of The Goonies was filmed in and around Astoria, Oregon. There are many shoot locations in town and within a short drive along the scenic Oregon coast. There are a few other remote shootings locations as well as a bunch of footage shot on sets in sound stages. In this post, we’ll go into detail about Goonies filming locations that you can visit in and around Astoria.

Where is Astoria?

The town of Astoria, Oregon sits on the Oregon Coast along the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. It is the oldest town in Oregon and is a lovely place. Even without the Goonies sights the city of Astoria is a beautiful little town and is worth a visit anyway.

Goonies Film Tour

Here are the must-see Goonies filming locations that I’ve been able to research and visit. I’ve detailed out the locations and tips for each one that you can see. Here they are in order of appearance in the film so crank up your Cyndi Lauper, shout “hey you guys” in your best Sloth voice, and start your Goonies road trip.

The Goonies Jail – Oregon Film Museum

Goonies Prison

The opening scene of The Goonies takes place in a real prison in Astoria, formerly the Clatsop County Jail, where Jake Fratelli makes his prison break. The Goonies prison address is 732 Duane Street, Astoria, and has since been converted into the Oregon Film Museum. The museum features exhibits from many of the motion pictures filmed in Oregon and the Astoria area. Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Short Circuit top the list of movies filmed in Astoria.

Goonies jail, now the oregon film museum.

Goonies fans won’t be disappointed to see the actual cell from the movie where the Jake Fratelli makes his prison break. Tons of Goonies memorabilia is on display along with movie trivia, facts, and a real movie set. Did I mention that they have a replica of the Fratelli’s ORV parked out front? I forgot to check for bullet holes though.

goonies jail cell

There is a reasonable admission charge to see the museum and you can check out their hours and prices here.

John Warren Field

goonies practice field

The field where Andi practices cheer during the car chase was formerly John Warren Field. Unfortunately, after some digging to find the location, I found out that it is gone. The field was converted into part of the Columbia Memorial Hospital. If you still want to see where it was during the filming of the Goonies, the field used to be at the corners of 20th Street and Exchange Street.

Astoria Coffee Co.

Rosalita the Goonies

Again in the opening credits, Rosalita is seen crossing the street with groceries as the Fratellis pass in their “this real neat ORV” followed by police. This store in the background of this shot is now Astoria Coffee Co. and is located at 304 37th Street, Astoria. It is very near the Goondocks and is fun to see.

Mouth’s House

Corey Feldman's House Mouth's House

The exterior of Mouth’s house is briefly shown the car chase as well. Not much happens here, as Mouth is inside helping his dad with the sink. The house is located on the corner of Skyline Avenue and Valley Street in Astoria and still looks similar to this day.

East End Mooring Basin

Mooring Basin

In the opening credits of the movie, Stef is seen dunking in a basin for crabs along the pier. This takes place along dock 36 in Astoria.

Astoria Sea Lions

You can park near the dock and walk along the piers to take in views of the fishing boats and cargo ships that frequent the Columbia River. Astoria has a bunch of resident sea lions that you can watch now too.

Astoria docks

Lower Columbia Bowl

Lower Columbia Bowl Chunk the Goonies Bowling Alley

This bowling alley, sometimes referred to as Chunk’s Bowling Alley is really named Lower Columbia Bowl and is located at 826 Marine Drive, Astoria. It is where Chunk witnesses the car chase at the beginning of the movie.

Goonies corner

Lower Columbia Bowl is still open for bowling and hasn’t changed a whole lot since filming. They love visitors and have a special corner of the alley dedicated to visitors and fans of the movie.

Chunk's bowling alley

If you catch them on a slow day workers might be willing to tell their own stories from the filming days. I happened to catch a worker who detailed the shooting of the famous car chase scene and how Jeff Cohen, aka Chunk, kept missing his mark on the window (his pizza had to line up perfectly to cover a reflection on the glass). They had to reshoot the scene so many times they had to make multiple runs to McDonald’s to get more milkshakes.

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock

Goonies Beach Scene

The Fratelli car chase scene ends at beautiful Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach in Oregon about 26 miles south of Astoria. The Fratellis cleverly blend into the 3rd Annual ORV Ralley and lose the police amid hundreds of other Jeeps and off-road vehicles.

Cannnon Beach Goonies

Haystack Rock is seen in the background as the Jeeps start the rally. Cannon Beach is a great beach destination on the Oregon coast and is very popular with tourists.

The Goonies House

GOonies House

No Goonies tour would be complete without a visit to the Goondocks. The famous house of brothers Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin) and Brand (Josh Brolin) is located in the hills of Astoria overlooking the Columbia River. The address of the Goonies house is 368 38th Street, Astoria, but don’t plan on seeing it up close, not even to do a truffle shuffle.

goonies house location

Back in the day, visitors were able to park on the street below and trek up the driveway to get a photo of the iconic house which is a private residence. When we visited the house back in 2009 we even got a courteous wave from the owners.

goonies location tour

The current owner, Sandi Preston, is a fan of the movie but has posted a no trespassing sign at the end of the driveway to crack down on unwanted visitors and litter.  At times the house was even covered with a blue tarp to deter visitors.

Because of its location, it is impossible to see the house from the street below. There are also a bunch of no parking signs on the street, so the city has cracked down on visitors to the Walsh Home. Goonies never say die, so I’m holding out hope that someday it’ll be visitor friendly again.

Data’ House

datas house the goonies

Right next door and just a short zip line ride away Data’s house. Data’s house address is 344 38th Street, Astoria, but again, because of the no trespassing request, it isn’t available to see.

Flavel House Museum

Astoria Historical Museum

The Flavel House Museum is located at 441 8th Street, Astoria and is seen in the movie as The Astoria Historical Museum where Mikey’s dad works as a museum curator. The Goonies pass the museum on their bikes on their way to search for One Eyed Willie and his treasure.

Flavel House Museum

The actual house was finished in 1886 by a wealthy entrepreneur, Captain George Flavel and is now home to a museum about the Captain Flavel and the area.

Ecola State Park and the Lighthouse Lounge

Goonies Ecola State Park

Between Astoria and Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park which is home to a few more Goonies Film locations. To enter the state park you must have a pass which is around $8-10.

Ecola State Park Goonies

First, the state park has an iconic coastal view that is shown in the movie where the Goonies pull their bikes up the bluff while searching for the start of the treasure hunt.

goonies location tour

Following the treasure map leads them to the second spot in Ecola State Park, the Lighthouse Lounge, aka the Fratelli’s hideout and entrance to the caves.

Lighthouse Lounge was constructed for the movie and was part of an elaborate set, and torn down after filming. Currently, there is a picnic shelter near its former site. The park has a bunch of hiking trails, great views, and is a nice stop to stretch your legs on your Goonies tour.

Goonies Beach Scene

Goat Head's Beach Cauldron Point

Sadly the goonies beach scene location isn’t real. This beach scene of The Goonies is set on fictional Cauldron Point and wasn’t filmed in Oregon. Instead, the scene of the pirate ship and the Goonies walking the beach was shot on Goat Rock Beach in Northern California. Because of its location, I wasn’t able to make it to this beach, but maybe someday.

Goonies Day Celebration

goonies day

If you’re planning a Goonies road trip and want to hit all of the stops you may want to plan your visit around Goonies day, an annual celebration in Astoria on June 7th. Every year on this day they have a special Goonies festival and celebrate this special movie. People from all around the world take a trip to Astoria for the festival.

Past events have featured cast visits, treasure hunts, competitions, and sightseeing. Every five years the anniversary celebration is amped up with larger events that occur. Apparently, the 25th anniversary was really packed and the 30th anniversary celebration was another success! I personally haven’t ever made it to a Goonies day, but I hope to get to one soon.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed this Goonies movie tour and get to see the Goondocks and some of the awesome sights from the Goonies. Which goonies locations were your favorite?

the goonies

Heyyy you guys! Avast ye and listen up, for I have a tale to tell ye about the Goonies filming locations. Have ye ever wondered where Mikey, Data, Chunk, Mouth, and Sloth embarked on their booty-busting adventure? Well, shiver me timbers and hoist the Jolly Roger, because we're about to journey to the very spot where this swashbuckling movie was filmed. We're setting our course for Astoria, Oregon , where the Goonies' treasure hunt all began on the Oregon Coast. So come aboard, ye scallywags, and let's set sail on a journey to uncover buried treasure.

the goonies

Growing up in the eighties was just simply awesome. And while we didn't have a lot of really cool high-tech things to play with, our time was mostly filled with wrecking on our bikes, catching bugs, and of course wishing we were a real life Goonie.

I have another fun fact for all you movie fans out there before we proceed. Kindergarten Cop, was also another great movie filmed in Astoria !

the goonies

The Goonies, among other great movies like The Ghostbusters, comes from a time when they really made a lot of great kids movies. The movies today for kids aren't bad, but I feel most of them can't even touch the movies we grew up with as they lack the imagination and magic that went into so many great films in those days.

The Goonies was a huge part of my childhood, and to this day remains one of my favorite movies ever made. While my children maybe don't have the same love for it that us eighties babies did, they still appreciate the flick.

Personally, I have now made my way to the Goondocks many times. That is, of course, Astoria. As a native Oregonian writing this, I am truly grateful to be so close to the hometown of one of the best movies ever made in the 80s.

Goonies Filming Locations

goonies house

First on the list of Goonies locations, and probably one of the most popular tourist attractions for Goonies lovers, was The Goonie's House in Astoria. The home is generally better known as Mikey's house. If you’re a true fan, then you know that visiting the infamous Goonie’s house is a must-do on your treasure-hunting adventure.

The iconic two-story Victorian house was famously featured in the 1985 Steven Spielberg classic and has become a popular tourist attraction and local phenomenon over the past four decades. In fact, it was recently sold to Behman Zakeri for $1.65 million, nearly 40 years after the movie first made it famous.

You might be wondering where you can find the iconic two-story Victorian house from the movie. Well, the house is located in Astoria, Oregon, along the picturesque Pacific Coast.

The house, which is better known as Mikey’s house, has been a popular tourist attraction for years, drawing in crowds of devoted fans from all over the world. But what you might not know is that the house has changed hands several times over the years, and the newest owner has recently opened up the Goonies House to the public for tours .

That’s right, you can now walk through the very same halls and climb up the same attic where Mikey and his friends plotted their epic adventure. So come on down and relive your childhood dreams of finding One-Eyed Willie’s treasure!

Address:  304 38th Street, Astoria, Oregon, USA

1. Opening Scene at John Warren Field

One of the film locations is from the beginning credits when the Fratellis are being pursued by the police, and Andy (Kerri Green) is leading cheer practice. Unfortunately, we have learned the football field was torn down in 2015. The site is now home to the Columbia Memorial Hospital, but some of the grassy area from John Warren field is still visible.

The John Warren Field previously was at 20th and Exchange Street in Astoria, Oregon.

2. Data's House From The Goonies

In the scene where Brand steals the little girl's bike, he does so in front Of Data's house. You will find Data's house on 304 38th St, in Astoria, Oregon.

Keep in mind just like Mikey's house, this is also a private residence. Parking at the nearby Astor Elementary School and walking to the homes would be the best idea to make sure and not bother the people currently living here. You'll also find a great viewpoint from the waterfront area which is across the highway.

3. Flavel House Museum

goonies filming locations

Remember where Mikey's dad works? Here's the place. It's known as the Flavel House Museum, and it is absolutely gorgeous. This Queen-Anne style house was built by millionaire Columbia River bar pilot Captain George Flavel, and in fact is now on the National Register of Historic Places. You will find this spot at 441 8th St, in Astoria, Oregon.

4. Lower Columbia Bowl

Remember when Chunk smashes his pizza and milkshake on the window? One of the funniest moments from Chunk of course, during the police car chase in the opening scene. And it was at the Lower Columbia Bowl, which you can find on 826 Marine Dr, again in Astoria, Oregon.

Hell you may even decide to stop in for a game, where they offer state of the art scoring systems, synthetic lanes, dollar off nights, and a bar.

5. The Store in Astoria

goonies filming locations

When The Goonies went to the store, this is where they went. It's just around the corner from their house in the movie. Signs had been changed to make this building into a grocery store, and the unsightly wires and poles have since been removed.

The sign says 37th Street and Lief Erikson Drive. Leif Erikson Drive is an Extension of Marine Drive and is also Highway 30. It's the main drag through Astoria going along the Columbia River. It's also called East Columbia River Highway on some maps, although I've personally never heard anyone call it by that!

6. Mouth's House

goonies filming locations

In the early scenes of the movie, Mouth's house serves as a prominent filming location. Located just up the hill from the County Jail, it features the front of the house in one scene, while another captures Mouth in his bedroom with a stunning view of the actual location visible through the window.

Address:  32 Skyline Avenue, Astoria

7. Astoria Coffee Co

Don't forget to make a brief stop at the crosswalk across from Astoria Coffee Co in Astoria. This spot is where you can catch a glimpse of Rosalita crossing the street while the Fratellis speed past in a frantic chase with the police.

Address: 304 37th St, Astoria, OR 97103

8. Ecola State Park

The Fratelli family's hideout, the Lighthouse Lounge, was built at Ecola Point and then unfortunately taken down when the movie wrapped. Today is Ecola State Park is a heavily visited recreation Park on the Oregon Coast.

According to Sean Astin, he was allowed to keep the treasure map used in the film. However, the map was lost forever when his mother discovered it several years later, thought it was just a crinkled piece of paper, and threw it in the trash.

9. Oregon Film Museum

Ah yes, we can't forget the exciting jail break scene. Today, the old jail is a museum! In a daring attempt to free his incarcerated brother from Clatsop County Jail, Francis takes matters into his own hands. With a tank of gasoline and a shot from his pistol, he sets the jailhouse ablaze, reveling in his triumph. Seeking refuge at the Lighthouse Lounge, Francis and his family bask in their newfound freedom.

However, the celebrations are cut short when a pair of FBI agents arrive to confront the Fratellis. In the ensuing confrontation, shots are fired and the agents lose their lives, leaving the Fratellis to face the consequences of their actions.

The Oregon Film Museum is a must-visit destination for any film lover. The museum is housed in the historic Clatsop County Jail, which was featured in the opening scene of the 1985 film The Goonies. The museum celebrates the history and art of filmmaking in Oregon, showcasing props, costumes, and memorabilia from some of the state's most iconic movies and TV shows.

Visitors can even step into a replica of the jail cell from The Goonies and explore the interactive exhibits that bring the state's filmmaking legacy to life. Whether you're a fan of The Goonies or simply interested in the history of filmmaking, the Oregon Film Museum is a fascinating and engaging experience that is not to be missed.

11. Cauldron Point – Goat Rock Beach California

goonies filming locations

The Goonies movie is packed with breathtaking filming locations that transport you into the captivating world of the adventurous group of misfits. However, there is a common misconception that the iconic final scene featuring One-Eyed Willie's ship sailing into the sunset was filmed at Indian Beach.

Contrary to popular belief, the final scene was shot at Goat Rock Beach in California, where the crew created a stunning visual spectacle that has stayed with fans for decades. The natural beauty of Goat Rock Beach, with its picturesque scenery and rugged coastline, provided the perfect backdrop for this unforgettable cinematic moment.

It's interesting to note that despite not being filmed in Oregon, the final scene's seamless integration into the rest of the movie is a testament to the dedication and skill of the filmmakers. Additionally, visiting Goat Rock Beach allows fans to relive this magical moment and experience the awe-inspiring location that played a vital role in the film's unforgettable finale.

Overall, although the final scene in The Goonies was not shot at Indian Beach, its unique charm and appeal continue to captivate audiences and remind us of the magic that can be created on film. And, for those who want to explore this iconic filming location, Goat Rock Beach is a must-visit destination for any true Goonies fan.

We covered quite a bit of filming locations in the Goonies here, although we may have missed some. Do you know any other spots we missed? We'd love to hear from you in the comments below. The movie was filmed on location in California, and of course Oregon. Locations included were Goat Rock State Beach, California, Astoria as we've mentioned, and of course Cannon Beach.

Goonies Never Say Die! Must-See Movie Locations from The Goonies

Goonies Never Say Die! Must-See Movie Locations from The Goonies

Hey you guys! Ready to explore the Goondocks in real life?

The Goonies is one of the most iconic children’s movies of the 1980s – and for good reason. It brings to life that classic childhood dream of finding a mysterious treasure map and embarking on a real-life scavenger hunt. Who didn’t want to be a Goonie?

While the town of Goondocks might be fictional, you can still recreate iconic moments from the movie on a road trip to Astoria, Oregon. From the Goonies’ house to the Lighthouse Lounge, there are plenty of iconic spots to explore. Will you be the one to find One-Eyed Wily’s long lost treasure?

Here are a few of the filming locations to expect on your Goonies-inspired adventure:

The Goonies House

Data’s house, lower columbia bowl, county jail / oregon film museum, flavel house museum, mouth’s house, ecola state park, cannon beach, where was the goonies movie filmed.

The Goonies movie was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, where the fictional town of Goondocks is based. As you drive through the town, you’ll start to recognize key locations from the movie, whether it’s one of the kids’ houses or a backdrop from your favorite scene.

With the premise of the film essentially a huge, town-wide scavenger hunt, it’s easy to recreate the Goonies’ journey with an Astoria road trip. Just pick up your rental car from Portland International Airport and take a two-hour drive along the I-5 and US 30 until you reach the port city of Astoria. Let the adventure begin!

368 38th Street, Astoria, OR 97103

The Goonies House, better known to fans of the movie as Mikey’s house, is one of the most iconic locations from the movie. It’s here that the Goonies find the treasure map in the attic, and where Chunk performs his shuffle truffle outside.

Over the past few decades, the owners of the house have welcomed many tourists and fellow Goonies to snap a few photos or perform the truffle shuffle outside. On a few occasions, visits have had to stop due to rude fans, so always try to remain respectful. The latest owner has confirmed that they’re happy for fans to stop by to see the iconic house, and will be preserving the house for years to come.

Visitors are asked to only access the property on foot and respect parking restrictions in the local area. There is also a donation box in the driveway, to help continue the legacy of the Goonies house.

304 38th Street, Astoria, OR 97103

While you’re parked on 38 th Street, have a wander down the road to check out Data’s house. This spot is where Data created some of his greatest inventions, including Slick Shoes, Bully Blinders and the Pincers of Peril.

Just bear in mind, this house is a private residence, so try to be respectful of the current owners. There is another great view of Data’s house from across the highway by the waterfront if you want to take pictures.

Looking to refuel? The Astoria Coffee Company is just around the corner on 37 th Street. Not only does it sell a great cup of coffee, but it also features briefly in the Goonies movie during the cop chase scene. Stop by to pick up a Goonies map to help you navigate the rest of your trip!

826 Marine Drive, Astoria, OR 97103

Just a few minutes’ drive along the coast takes you to Marine Drive, where you can see Lower Columbia Bowl. This venue is still in operation as a bowling alley, so you can play a few rounds in the same place where Chunk watched the car chase while eating pizza – you can even look through the same glass!

There are several popular pizza restaurants just minutes away from Lower Columbia Bowl if you want to recreate the scene. Check out local Sahara Pizza for “Pizza with Personalities” or pop to Papa Murphy’s less than a minute’s walk away.

732 Duane Street, Astoria, OR 97103

Right around the corner from Lower Columbia Bowl, you will find the Oregon Film Museum. While this might not sound like something from the movie, as soon as you arrive, you’ll see why it’s included on your Goonies movie tour.

The museum is located within the Clatsop County Jail building. In the movie, this is where Jake Fratelli was held until his daring escape. You can visit his actual cell and see the jeep used in the escape parked right out front.

Film buffs may also want to experience the self-guided museum tour during a visit here. The tour takes around 30 minutes and explores the history of filmmaking in Oregon.

714 Exchange Street, Astoria, OR 97103

The Flavel House Museum may only feature briefly in the Goonies movie, but it’s worth checking out after the County Jail. It’s just around the corner after all.

Known in the movie as the Astoria Historical Museum, this is where Mikey’s dad works as an “assistant curly”. Lovers of architecture and beautiful gardens may want to pause their Goonies’ adventure for a few hours and take a tour of this exquisite Queen Anne-style house and gardens.

You can also pop over the road and see the Kindergarten Cop House on Exchange Street while you’re in the area.

32 Skyline Avenue, Astoria, OR 97103

Just a short drive west from the Flavel House Museum takes you to Skyline Avenue, where you can see Mouth’s house. You’ll recognize the front of the house from the opening movie credits, shot by Steven Spielberg.

The house also features a little later when Mouth is in his bedroom – you can look down the street and get the same view he gets from his window.

Cannon Beach, OR 97110

Time for a bit more of a drive now as we head to Ecola State Park, where you’ll find several filming locations from the movie. While the Goonies made it look like an easy bike ride, the park is actually around 26 miles from the town of Astoria. So, you can expect around a 45-minute drive from Skyline Avenue.

Ecola State Park is instantly recognizable as the place where the Goonies began their treasure hunt, and the hideout of the Fratellis. While the hideout was purpose-built for the movie and removed after filming, there is still a small structure marking the location of the “Lighthouse Lounge”.

Numerous scenes from the Goonies were shot in Ecola State Park, including when Mikey’s brother Brandon gets pushed off his bike, and as the kids search for the start of the treasure map. Some areas of the park may also seem familiar to fans of the Twilight movie series, which was also filmed in the area.

Cannon Beach is the setting of the Third Annual ORV Rally at the start of the Goonies movie. Pay a visit and imagine it packed with cars, drivers and spectators, as the Fratelli car chase races on.

From Cannon Beach, you’ll also be able to spot Haystack Rock, which the Goonies use as a point of navigation during their treasure hunt. This is one of the tallest sea stacks in the world and worth checking out even for non-Goonies fans! Film lovers may also recognize this beach from the end scenes of the movie Point Break.

There are many other locations in the Astoria area that you might recognize from the Goonies as you drive around. Some locations, such as John Warren Field, no longer exist, but many still do. And if you want to visit all the movie’s iconic locations, there’s a longer drive ahead – the final scene was shot at Goat Rock Beach in California!

The Goonies is one of the best-loved 1980s adventure movies. The tale of friends searching for One-Eyed Willy’s hidden treasure was a huge hit on its release in 1985 and continues to win the hearts of audiences today.

The story is set in a picturesque fictional town in Astoria, Oregon on the Pacific coast. It’s here where our teenage heroes set off on their quest for the pirate’s loot to save their homes from demolition.

Whether you’re a fan of the movie or just visiting Astoria as part of your travels, the movie’s filming locations are worth checking out. They provide a fascinating insight into Astoria’s history and showcase its stunning shoreline, idyllic Douglas fir-lined streets, and neighborhoods sporting picture-postcard Colonial Revival-style houses.

More than a movie – why The Goonies is still loved today

The Goonies was one of the biggest box office  hits  of the 1980s. While it’s now nearing its 40th anniversary, the film continues to be adored by fans new and old. It’s no surprise the film has transcended the silver screen. It spawned the much-loved top 10 single “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” by Cyndi Lauper and coined the phrases “Truffle Shuffle” and “Hey You Guys.”

Its role in pop culture is undiminished today. For example, Funko released the board game “Goonies Never Say Die” in 2021. Elsewhere, Blueprint Gaming created The Goonies Jackpot King game which can be played at popular online casinos like  MrQ . The five-reel, three-row game features many recognizable elements from the film – from Mikey’s copper medallion to skulls, gold coins, and pirate ships.

Where To Visit In Astoria

One of the most visited places is the Astoria Jailhouse which features in the opening scene. This is where the Fratelli family (played by Anne Ramsey, Joe Pantoliano, and Robert Davi) escape the clutches of the local sheriff.

Today it’s home to the Oregon Film Museum. Here, at 732 Duane Street, you can discover stories from the making of The Goonies and find out about other notable films shot in Astoria, including Kindergarten Cop and National Lampoon’s Animal House .

The property known as “The Goonies House” is where Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand (Josh Brolin) live. It’s located at 368 38th Street off Franklin Avenue. There’s no parking, so you have to make your way up to the house on foot. In the movie we see  Data  (Ke Huy Quan) use a zipline from his bedroom window to enter Mikey’s living room. As you’d expect, his house is located just across the street.

Other must-see locations include the Fratelli’s hideout in Ecola State Park. Although the bar they’re holed up in was purpose-built for the movie and removed afterward, there’s a small structure marking its location today.

While here, check out the coastal views the Goonies witnessed when they checked the treasure map before going underground. You can’t miss Haystack Rock, one of the most famous local landmarks when walking along the Indian Beach Trail. Other scenes were shot in this area, such as when Brand gets thrown off the cliff while riding the pink bicycle he stole.

Astoria is a wonderful place to visit whether or not you’re a Goonies fan. However, the classic adventure movie adds a little extra magic to your trip, so it’s well worth checking out some of its most notable filming locations.

The Goonies film location: Clatsop County Building, Astoria

The fondly remembered Steven Spielberg -produced kids’ adventure was filmed mostly up in the Pacific Northwest, around Astoria , on the Oregon coast at the border with Washington State , and introduced the world to the delights of the truffle shuffle.

Astoria stands on the mouth of the Columbia River and ‘Goondocks’ is the fictitious name of the waterfront neighbourhood where the kids live.

The Walsh house, from which Mikey ( Sean Astin ) and his family are due to be evicted, is 368 38th Street , off Franklin Avenue, near Columbia Field , to the east of town. Data ( Ke Huy Quan ) lives a mere zipwire away, next door at 304 38th Street . These are private homes so please be respectful of residents.

The Goonies film location: Flavel House Museum, 8th Street, Astoria

Mikey’s dad works in Astoria itself at the Flavel House Museum , 441 8th Street , at Duane Street. One of the best preserved Queen Anne houses in the Northwest, the Flavel House was built in 1885 for Captain George Flavel , a river bar pilot, and has been restored to its original Victorian appearance.

Just across Duane Street , the crooked Fratelli family, lead by formidable mother ( Anne Ramsey ) spring Jake Fratelli ( Robert Davi ) from Clatsop County Jail, 732 Duane Street , after a faked suicide. The old jail building is not only still unchanged, it now houses the Oregon Film Museum .

Celebrating movies made in the state, the Film Museum opened in 2010 to coincide with the 25th anniversary of The Goonies , and also features exhibits related to films such as Kindergarten Cop , Twilight , Sometimes A Great Notion and National Lampoon's Animal House .

The Goonies film location: Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park, Oregon

The police chase following the Fratellis roars through the streets of Astoria before ending up more than 20 miles south, in the middle of a motor rally on Cannon Beach . At the southern end of Ecola State Park , the beach had previously featured in Spielberg ’s slapstick comedy 1941 and went on appear in Twilight .

Also heading for Ecola State Park are Mikey and his chums, after discovering the treasure map of pirate One-Eyed Willy. The terrific view of the beach and its landmark Haystack Rock , is from the forested Ecola State Park Road to the north. The abandoned old café used as a hideout by the Fratellis was built specially for the film in the park.

Beneath the café, the Goonies discover the underground tunnel which inevitably leads them to the long-dead One-Eyed Willy and his treasure.

The Goonies film location: Goat Rock Beach, Bodega Bay, Northern California

It’s obviously a much longer tunnel than it appears in the film. When they finally emerge into daylight, they’re on the coast of Northern California .

Although the end credits thank Bodega Bay (famously the location for Alfred Hitchcock ’s The Birds ), the beach with the jagged rock formations is about 15 miles north of the town. Across the Russian River from the town of Jenner , it’s Goat Rock Beach, Goat Rock Road, 5400-5900 N Hwy 1 . Part of the Sonoma Coast State Park , It’s a beautiful spot, but also home to a colony of harbour seals – you’re advised to stay at least 50 yards from the seals (particularly between March and August when they’re pupping), and no dogs are allowed on the beach at any time.

By the way, if you find Dave Grusin ’s catchy chase music is subliminally familiar, believe it or not, it’s a revamping of Handel ’s Sarabande – the original of which is used throughout Stanley Kubrick ’s masterpiece Barry Lyndon . Go ahead, take a listen .

5 Filming Locations for Goonies Fans to Visit

As my wife and I planned a trip to Oregon, we thought it would be fun to visit the locations seen in a movie we grew up with – The Goonies . It was filmed in and around Astoria, Oregon, not too far from where we would be camping. We made a day of it, and explored these five most popular filming locations.

The movie was filmed in more than these five locations. Places like Lower Columbia Bowl (the restaurant where Chunk saw “The most amazing thing I ever saw”), John Warren Field (the spot where Andy leads the cheerleading squad) and East End Mooring Basin (where the Fratelli’s wrap up the car chase scene at the start of the movie).

But these five spots are the ones that draw the attention and traffic. It’s a chance to see for yourself the spots where Mikey found the treasure map, or where the goonies rode their bikes on their way to One-eye Willie’s treasure.

Clatsop County Jail – Oregon Film Museum

Before our trip to the Oregon Coast, we watched The Goonies movie – that way we could see the sites in the film. The opening scene is one of the Fratelli brothers in the Clatsop County Jail. His family is waiting outside in the Jeep and after his escape, they light a fire around the entrance so the cops can’t chase them as easily.

Today, the Clatsop County Jail is the Oregon Film Museum . One side of the building is a tribute to The Goonies . It includes the jail cell where the Fratelli brother (Jake) was held. There’s even the lead pipe contraption he used to support himself when he was faking his hanging.

The other jail cells include memorabilia from the movie, including the board game, VHS cassette tape, movie posters, Data’s invention coat with all the fixings, and much more.

The other half of the building places you into movies. You get to act out various scenes from not only The Goonies , but other movies filmed in Astoria ( Kindergarten Cop , Free Willy , Twilight , etc.). Watch your scenes in the screening room near the front entrance. Email your video files to you, too. I’m not sure if we did everything correctly, but with only two people (my wife and I) it was difficult to play actor and cameraman.

Don’t miss the bins in the filming room with movie props from The Goonies movie. We saw Chester Copperpot’s wallet and the skeleton key Mikey used in the cave on his way to the treasure.

Visit the iconic Walsh House from The Goonies movie - Astoria, Oregon Carltonaut's Travel Tips

The Walsh House (Mikey’s house)

I read a lot of articles about seeing the Walsh house during our visit. Many said there are no trespassing signs. Others said the owners have been known to call the police. I concluded that we would photograph the house from a distance. However, other people were standing near the house talking to the nice woman who owned it.

We walked up the drive at Duane and 37th Street and joined in the conversation. She was very nice, and seemed to really enjoy talking with the visitors. There were only a few of us there at that time (4-6 people in total). At one point she invited us into her yard to show off some of her flowers. In my opinion, keep it to small groups and be respectful of the people and the property. Maybe pass on getting an Instagram video of yourself doing the Truffle Shuffle. In short… be respectful.

Right next to the Walsh house is the blue house of Mikey’s friend Data. They have a large gate up and a no trespassing sign. They’ve also placed a tarp over the window where Data ziplined over to the Walsh’s front door. Be respectful of their property as well.

Flavel House Museum is seen briefly in The Goonies movie Carltonaut's Travel Tips

Flavel House Museum

The Flavel House Museum appears for a brief moment in The Goonies movie. As Mikey and his friends ride their bikes through town on their way to the coast, they cycle past this house. Mikey’s dad is the assistant curator of the unnamed museum and waves to the kids as they go by.

Captain George Flavel, a boat pilot on the Columbia River, built this house in 1885. George is also noted as Astoria’s first millionaire.

The house reflects the Queen Anne architecture, popular during the Victorian era. The parlor, library, music and dining rooms are restored with antiques from the late Victorian era. It’s a beautiful house worth visiting, regardless of whether you want to tour the museum or just walk by it and pretend to wave at the “Goonies” as they ride past. 😉

Visit Ecola State Park near Astoria, Oregon Carltonaut's Travel Tips

Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park is one of the many state parks in Oregon. Located on the coast, just south of Seaside, Oregon (and north of Cannon Beach), it’s lush green trees contrast nicely against the blue ocean below.

In The Goonies movie, the boys are riding their bike along the winding road that leads to Ecola State Park . You also see Mikey’s older brother, who meets his high school nemesis. The bully holds him to his car while speeding down the road, then launching him over the edge on his bike. Please don’t try to recreate this scene. I’m sure they were using stunt doubles and protective gear so no one was injured.

RELATED POST: Visit the botanical gardens at Shore Acres State Park along the Oregon coast

When the boys reach the coast, they’re seen pulling their bikes up the side of a grassy area. That’s Indian Beach, which is part of Ecola State Park. It offers a great view of the next filming spot: Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock.

If you want a beautiful spot to enjoy the Oregon Coast, Ecola State Park is worth a stop – and you can drive the road the goonies took at the start of their journey to find One-eye Willie. It’s a win-win.

See Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach near Astoria, Oregon Carltonaut's Travel Tips

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach is an iconic location along the Oregon coast. As the Fratelli’s are escaping at the start of the movie, they end up on Cannon Beach in a race. Their jeep blends in with all the other jeeps racing on the beach and they complete their getaway as they drive by Haystack Rock.

When Mikey and his friends make it to the beach later in the movie, Mikey uses the pirate token to line up Haystack rock with other features. That token marks the Lighthouse Lounge as the entrance to One-eyed Willie’s treasure map. So even though the boys are standing near Indian Beach in Ecola State Park, they’re looking south toward Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock.

Take a selfie with The Goonies' Sloth at the Oregon Film Museum in Astoria, Oregon Carltonaut's Travel Tips

We had fun exploring these locations. And one interesting fact to close this article with: The Lower Columbia Bowl location thought it would be fun to serve strawberry shakes and pizza during the 25th anniversary of The Goonies movie. However, so many people recreated Chunk’s smashing of them against the window (as seen at the start of the movie), that they decided to NOT serve strawberry shakes for the 30th anniversary.

I guess there’s something about recreating iconic scenes from the movie. I won’t lie, I thought it would’ve been funny to do the Truffle Shuffle at the Walsh house. But I wanted to be respectful of the area and the people who live in those iconic houses. Plus, I didn’t want to scare away my readers with a photo (or even worse, a video) of me doing the iconic “dance.”

A road trip to filming locations featured in 'The Goonies'

Goonies never say die!

  • Featured Trip Guides

Created by Roadtrippers - December 18th 2020

The 1985 film The Goonies focused on a team of kids traversing their town on a scavenger hunt, looking for buried treasure. Those who grew up in the 1980s may have shared a common dream of being a Goonie, and while the Goondocks isn't really an area of Astoria, Oregon, the town itself plays a huge role in the movie. Mikey and his friends loved growing up there so much they were literally willing to risk life and limb to save their homes.

This Goonies -inspired road trip will take you on a scavenger hunt of your own to treasured filming locations.

The Goonies House Film Location

The Goonies House, better known as Mikey's house, is one of the most popular attractions in Astoria. The formerly-private residence was recently purchased by a Goonies super fan who hopes to preserve the film's legacy by repainting the exterior to match the movie, installing a zipline, and creating a gathering place for fans of the film.

You can also visit the building where Mikey's dad works, which is actually the Flavel House Museum. The gorgeous Queen Anne-style house was, in real life, built by millionaire Columbia River bar pilot Captain George Flavel, and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

You can also stop by the County Jail, where Ma and Francis Fratelli break Jake out of lockup. It's been turned into the Oregon Film Museum. Stop inside and browse the exhibits honoring movies filmed in Oregon, from Animal House to Free Willy and more. Of course, The Goonies is mentioned, too.

We can't forget the gorgeous scenes of the Oregon coast, which were actually filmed 26 miles south of Astoria at Ecola State Park's Cannon Beach. Bonus: Scenes from Point Break and Twilight were filmed here, too.

Haystack Rock

The rock that the Goonies use to navigate the map is a sea stack known as Haystack Rock. It should be pretty easy to spot, as its one of the world's tallest sea stacks.

Even though the film is over 35 years old, it will always remain a classic because, as the saying goes, "Goonies never say die!"

Goonies Film Locations in Astoria, Oregon and Beyond

Historical Kids West

Share the post "Goonies Film Locations in Astoria, Oregon and Beyond"

There are several absolute classic hits for the 80’s crowd and the Goonies is one of them! Whether you’re a Steven Spielberg fan or a film fam, Goonies brings out the adventure in all of us. Famously filmed in Astoria, Oregon, these Goonies Film Locations are worthy of your road trip to the Pacific Coast!  Although the Goondocks itself isn’t a real place, Astoria very much is!

Astoria Oregon Goonies Film Locations

I’m so thankful my kids LOVE travel as well as 80’s movies so when we drove 9000 miles and tent camped across the country, we made it a point to visit the Goonies film locations in Astoria, Oregon! Below are some favorites not to miss for the real Goonie at heart!

From the list below, I recommend starting at the Film Museum, visiting all of the houses and Astoria locations first, then enjoy as much time as you can at the beaches and state park!

the Oregon Film Museum (former Clatsop County Jail)

Goonies Oregon Film Museum (1)

The Oregon Film Museum should be your first stop in Astoria, Oregon. Located on 732 Duane Street in the old Clatsop County Jail, this is where Mrs. Fratelli springs Jake Fratelli out of jail. While the county jail is mostly untouched from the 80’s and predominately Goonies related, you’ll also see other great film exhibits for Twilight, Kindergarten Cop, National Lampoon and more.

If you’re not a Goonies buff you may not enjoy the film museum as much but you can go inside the famous jail cell and even lay on the bed! There’s FANTASTIC Goonies artwork and life sized cutouts with plenty of opportunities for photo opps. The film museum is pretty small so this will not be a long stop.

Don’t miss the actual jeep used by the Fratellis parked right in front of the jailhouse!

Cannon Beach

Haystack Rock Cannon Beach Oregon

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock are famously used in many movies, but in the Goonies it is seen as the police chase the Fratellis through the streets of Astoria before ending up in the middle of a motor rally on Cannon Beach. This is where the Fratelli car chase ends.

Haystack Rock is also the rock that the Goonies used to navigate the map – it’s one of the tallest sea stacks in the world! What you don’t typically see in movies is actually how green the top of Haystack Rock is! It’s actually a protected area for puffins and other sea birds. At the base of Haystack Rock is a prime spot during low tide to see many amazing animals in tidal pools like starfish, sea urchin, and so many more.

You can learn more about tidal pool animals on the Pacific Coast here .

Ecola State Park

scenic ocean view Ecola Beach State Park

One of the most beautiful views in the area is found in Ecola State Park. (also seen in Twilight!) Several areas in the park were used for the Goonies film. The Fratelli’s hideout (Lighthouse Lounge), the Goonies treasure hunt when they were on their bikes (Indian Beach trail), and several others.

However, the abandoned old Lighthouse Lounge cafe that was used as a hideout by the Fratellis was actually built specifically for the movie and later removed so it is no longer there.

Cauldron Point – Goat Rock Beach

The final scene from the Goonies film was actually shot at Goat Rock Beach in California although many people assume it was shot at Ecola State Park as well.

Flavel House Museum

The Flavel House is a gorgeous historic museum now but in the Goonies it’s where Mikey’s dad, Mr. Walsh, worked as a museum curator. Located in Astoria at 441 8th Street, you can watch the Goonies cycle down the hill past the museum in search of One Eye’d Willie.

The Flavel house was once the retirement home of Captain George Flavel. It’s a whopping 11,600 square feet and was built in the late 1800’s. You can step back into the 19th century and explore the house and it’s grounds on a self-guided tour. There is much history of the Astoria area here and a great way to spend an hour or a few hours if you have them.

the Walsh family home

The Walsh family home is the famous headquarters for the Goonies! Perhaps one of the most iconic scenes from the film and the trickiest to access! Please do NOT drive up to the house – it is a dead end street for residents only and you will not easily be able to turn around. Please follow any signs you see posted on the street out of courtesy for the residents.

You will need to park a few blocks away and walk uphill for this sacred location! It is located at 368 38th Street and is also near Data’s house. As with any personal property please look only from the road and do not walk up to the house!

Data’s House

Remember the zipline that stretched from Mikey’s house to Data’s house in the Goonies? Yep – you can see this blue house on 304 38th Street. In fact it’s a good place to park near before walking up to the Walsh house.

Mouth’s House

Although far lesser known in the film, you can drive by Mouth’s house at 32 Skyline Avenue in Astoria.

Astoria Coffee Company

The Astoria Coffee Company in the film where Rosalita is seen crossing the street as the Fratellis speed past with the cops in pursuit is located at 304 37th St.

Lower Columbia Bowl

Remember the scene where Chunk is holding his pizza and milk shake and sees the car chase through the window? This is viewed from the Lower Columbia Bowling alley – 826 Marine Dr.

The Now Movie Locations has even more then vs. now film photos from the Goonies!

Nearby Places NOT to Miss!

If you’ve made the trek to Astoria there are a few places within driving distance that make an amazing addition onto your journey! Below are a few places in Oregon (and beyond) to consider adding to your itinerary.

Fort Stevens State Park Hammond Oregon

  • Fort Stevens Park – military fort, beach, shipwreck Peter Iredale
  • Seaside Aquarium – feed the sea lions & swing at the beach
  • 12 Waterfalls Scenic Loop on Columbia River Gorge
  • More destinations on the Oregon Coast
  • Portland – Voodoo Donuts, Shanghai Tunnels, Chinatown, Old Town Pizza (haunted)
  • Wings & Waves Waterpark
  • Brigittine Monks Monastery – artisan chocolates, fudge & truffles
  • Mt. St. Helens volcano (furthest away approx. 70 miles)
  • Ape Caves (approx. 104 miles)
  • Sea Lion Caves – Florence, Oregon

Discover The Goonies Filming Locations in Cannon Beach & Astoria

goonies location tour

Locations in The Goonies movie are located throughout Cannon Beach and Astoria.

Whether your upcoming Cannon Beach getaway is your first or fifth time visiting this Oregon town, there is always something new to discover. Situated just south of downtown,   Tolovana Inn   is not only a relaxing place to call home, but it puts you near the top   activities and attractions . Some of these spots might be familiar for movie fans. A fun and unique way to explore the sights of Cannon Beach and the surrounding area is by mapping out a self-guided tour of   The Goonies   filming locations, starting in nearby Astoria.

A Guide to Creating a Self-Guided Filming Tour

Released in 1985 ,   The Goonies   follows a group of kids who find an ancient map and the adventures on their journey to find the long-lost treasure. A majority of the filming took place in Astoria and Cannon Beach, which means you can see these classic   movie locations   in real life.

We recommend   starting your tour   by making the   40-minute drive to Astoria   then working your way back to our Cannon Beach hotel.

  • One of the most well-known attractions is   Mikey’s house . This spot is a private residence, so be respectful of the owners’ wishes when visiting and do not drive up the driveway. There is no street parking near the house, so you’ll need to park a few blocks away and walk to get your photo.
  • Another popular attraction is the   County Jail   on Duane Street. Today, the old jail is the   Oregon Film Museum   and showcases television and films produced or filmed in Oregon.
  • Go on a self-guided tour of the   Flavel House Museum , where Mikey’s dad worked as a curator, and the kids biked past in on their treasure hunt.
  • Several scenes featuring the Oregon coast were filmed at   Ecola State Park . This park is where the movie’s villains had their hideout and the start of the kids’ treasure hunt. The actual hideout was built for the film and then taken down, but you can see a small building where the hideout once stood.
  • One of the most recognizable attractions in Cannon Beach also makes an appearance in the movie. The kids use   Haystack Rock   to navigate the map, and a trip to Cannon Beach isn’t complete without stopping by to get a photo of this well-known landmark.

Make Memories Wandering around the Oregon Coast

It’s not hard to find fun things to add to your itinerary when planning your stay at Tolovana Inn. From discovering filming locations from   The Goonies   to   wandering downtown   Cannon Beach, there is something for everyone.

2024 RBC Heritage live stream, watch online, TV schedule, channel, tee times, radio, golf coverage

There is no rest for the weary with a signature event on tap this week on the pga tour.

rbc-heritage-signage-2023-g.jpg

Players make the short trip from Augusta, Georgia, to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for this week's 2024 RBC Heritage. In total, 69 golfers will tee it up on Harbour Town Golf Links across the first two days as yet another signature event on the PGA Tour's playing calendar gets underway.

Unlike the Genesis Invitational or Arnold Palmer Invitational, the RBC Heritage will not feature a 36-hole cut, meaning the entirety of the field will be around for the weekend. That is music to the ears to those who missed out on the weekend action at the Masters, including the likes of Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Wyndham Clark and Brian Harman.

Spieth, the 2022 champion, looks to kickstart his season after a disappointing showing at Augusta National. He is no stranger to bouncing back at the RBC Heritage; he followed a missed cut at the year's first major championship with a win a week later in Hilton Head.

If Spieth is to return to the winner's circle, he will have to go through Scottie Scheffler. The world No. 1 remains in the field for now and aims to collect his fourth trophy in his last five tournaments. Fresh off slipping on his second green jacket, Scheffler has widened the gap between him and the rest of the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

Tommy Fleetwood, Collin Morikawa Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Åberg, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa were among those to perform well at the Masters, and they hope that translates to more of the same. Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick will look for some form. In total, 26 of the top 30 players in the Official World Golf Rankings are set to play.
