Featuring 12 Tours and Extensions
From World Heritage Luang Prabang and the mysterious Plain of Jars to the sublime landscapes of the 4,000 Islands
Our Laos tours (or the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in full) lead you through what is probably one of the least-known countries in the world let alone in Southeast Asia! And yet it’s also one of its most idyllic destinations possessing, what is undoubtedly some of the region’s most spectacular scenery, best-preserved architecture and welcoming inhabitants.
Almost entirely mountainous and still covered with large tracts of tropical forest, Laos is separated from Vietnam to the east by the, up until recently, almost impenetrable Annamite Mountains and from Thailand and Burma (Myanmar) in the west by the mighty Mekong River. China’s remote Yunnan Province lies just to the north and the swathes of Northern Cambodia’s forests stretch away to the south.
With myriad hill-tribe peoples still leading largely traditional lifestyles in the mountains, the mysterious and remote Plain of Jars, the spectacular UNESCO Khmer ruins of Wat Phu in the South, the surreal limestone, karst, landscapes of Khammouane Province, the sublime 4,000 Islands of the Cambodian border region and the beautifully preserved temples and French colonial architecture of former royal capital and also World Heritage Site, Luang Prabang , there’s stunning scenery and much, much more to be seen.
Itineraries
Our selection of Laos tours covers the length and breadth of the country while the country’s central location in Southeast Asia means that, for those with a bit more time on their hands, it’s also convenient to combine with neighbouring destinations such as northern Thailand – on our Northern Laos and the Golden Triangle tour – with northern Vietnam on the Mountains and Hilltribes itinerary or even with rarely visited eastern Thailand on our Emerald Triangle tour.
Extensions and Private Tours
Note also that, although a land-locked country, island extensions in Thailand or Vietnam can be easily arranged while specifically designed family holidays are also available.
A rather unusual but certainly fascinating country to visit!

Luang Prabang
Plan your travels with us.
Just a few of our favourite things to see, do and experience in Laos...
Luang Prabang The ancient capital - now UNESCO site. Its riverside cafes, ancient temples, French architecture and lively markets make this remote but delightful town a firm favourite
4,000 Islands Khone Phapheng Falls - one of the world's largest waterfalls plus the picturesque Mekong archipelago form perhaps the country's most beautiful landscapes
Vang Vieng Scenery - Laos's spectacular limestone, karst, mountains provide some of Southeast Asia's most dramatic and iconic views
Thakaek Hin Boun - discover the Lord of the Rings scenery of limestone cliffs, pillars and pinacles and travel by boat up an underground river
Phonsavan The Plain of Jars. Also UNESCO-listed; remote and mysterious, explore this unique and highly unsual megalithic site
Culture and Customs
Knowing what to expect from local culture and customs will help you get more out of your Laos tour
The landlocked country is bordered by China's Yunnan Province to the north, Vietnam to the east, Burma & Thailand west & Cambodia in the south
Aside a narrow strip along the Mekong Valley some 90% of the country is mountainous. Much of this is comprised of the iconic karst scenery. Caves, waterfalls & dramatic rock formations abound
Climatic patterns are similar to those of neighbouring Thailand; March - May dry/hot, June - Sept. warm/wet, Oct - Feb dry/cool(er) though the mountainous terrain help keeps temperatures down
The population is split between lowland Lao, (related to Thais), Lao Theung, (midland) plus a host of minority, upland groups known as Lao Soung comprising around 30% of the total
Theravada Buddhism predominates in Laos though some minority, hill-tribe groups still retain animist beliefs or have converted to Christianity
Despite clear Thai and Vietnamese influences Lao cuisine has a distinctive, unique style. Sticky rice is ubiquitous generally eaten with grilled meat, spicy dips & equally fiery salads
Local Experts
Genuine local knowledge is what turns a good travel experience into an unfforgettable one. Here's our shout-out to the locals that help maket that happen.'
One of our Lao stars, Sone, hailing originally from the old Mekong port of Thakaek, manages to combine loads of fun and boundless energy with a relaxed style and spot on organization! Quite how she does it we don’t know but never a dull moment with Sone on one of our southern Laos and northern Cambodia tours.
Born in Luang Prabang but now residing in Luang Nam Tha district Pong leads our North Lao tours with distinction. An easy going nature, excellent command of English and an eye for improvisation help to explain Pong's consistently top rate feedback!

Frequently Asked Questions
Question #1, when’s the best time to go to laos.
The cooler drier period (by Southeast Asian standard) is usually end October to March but there are many advantages to visiting throughout the year.
Question #2
Why should i visit laos between april and september.
Laos experiences a rainy season from around early May through to late September. During this period, the tourist traffic is down to a trickle. Often there are discounts to be had from airlines and tour operators, including All Points East! The image of all day every day rain is completely false; typically tropical rain falls in short sharp bursts so often humidity will build up during the day resulting in an afternoon or evening downpour. Some of these tropical storms can be spectacular but rarely long and often only mean sheltering in the nearest cafe for an hour or so until the rain stops. Landscapes will be lush and green, rivers and waterfalls at their most spectacular and the fauna too is more active and plentiful; nature comes alive so to speak!
Question #3
What innoculations do i need.
For most of Southeast Asia, there are no compulsory inoculations – however, Hep A, Polio, Typhoid and Tetanus are recommended. If you are considering antimalarials we recommend you consult a health professional, but whatever you do or don’t do about antimalarials, we recommend a 50% DEET based insect repellent. A useful resource for information on travel health is http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/
Question #4
Do you recommend your tours for people travelling on their own.
Our small group tours make ideal holidays for solo travellers. Small fully escorted groups, eating together, family-style, no compulsory single supplements all go towards making you feel like you are travelling with a group of friends. If you don’t want to share then ask about single room supplements.
Question #5
If we book flights through you, which airlines do you use.
We are happy to book your flights from the UK to Laos. There are no direct flights but we can offer a wide range of options, from regional airports as well as London using most major airlines – most often Thai, Emirates and Qatar. Prices on the website are a guideline and we find the best prices and routes for you. Upgrades to Premium Economy or Business class are available.
Question #6
What’s your policy for tipping.
Tipping is discretionary. People always appreciate a gesture for their hard work and dedication but staff are paid and don’t rely on tips. It’s hard to give a guideline before a tour as it does depend on the group size. The tour leaders don’t collect money for tips but are happy to advise. What often works well is if the group appoint someone to collect and distribute tips on behalf of the whole group.
Question #7
How do i pay for the holiday, and is there a surcharge for credit cards.
We ask you to pay a 10% deposit upon booking your holiday with the balance being due 60 days prior to departure. There is no surcharge for paying by credit card. There is no charge for debit cards. We accept most major credit cards including American Express.
Packing light is a virtue, it'll make getting around easier and gives you room for souvenirs and the special things you find along the way. Packing "as little as possible" doesn't mean you have to forego comfort and any items you may forget are usually available locally for a fraction of the price.

"Completed 3 trips with Intrepid this year. A prior last year. The Leaders are well organized, informative and fun. Travelling inland in Greece and the Greek Islands (second time), Intrepid through their amazing leaders, introduce you and share history, way of life, amazing scenery and places to eat. Yes, they are busy days and you walk a lot, but the days are full and stimulating. You make life long friends in the group and leaders. Thank you Mia, Dina and Nasos. "The tour had an excellent itinerary and activities, giving a broad overview of Peru - we loved it. Accommodations (with one exception) were great, and all had an included breakfast buffet. The tour's included activities (e.g. cooking class, pisco tour and tasting, potato park, boat tour of Isla Ballestas) were terrific. Appreciated the two included flights which saved a lot of driving time. Logistics were handled, and everything was smooth and easy (thanks to our CEO, Mary Chu!)."

Laos Tour Selection Trips
- Bus trips through the mountains can be long and uncomfortable. Landslides may also disrupt travel plans, so make sure your plans are flexible.
- If you visit Vang Vieng to try the infamous “tubing”, you may be disappointed. Visitors can still float down the river in a rubber tube, but the riverside bars have all been shut down following a number of accidents involving tourists. Instead, the stopping points along the river are now spaces to play games and meet others (though rumor has it alcohol continues to be sold here).
- When choosing a trek in the northern mountains, make sure to choose a route appropriate to your fitness level, as well as ensuring to bring appropriate shoes and clothing.
- Malaria exists in parts of Laos, so anti-malarials, mosquito nets, and mosquito repellant are recommended.
- Act respectfully and dress appropriately when visiting buddhist temples. Remove your shoes and use only your right hand to ring bells and make offerings.
- English is common throughout Laos, particularly in tourist areas. Learning a few words in the Lao language, however, can be a nice way to interact with locals.

Baktrax Tours
Adventure Meets Culture
Laos defies coming under the banner of South East Asia.
While all the other countries are rush rush rush, Laos is slow slow slow. The next hot spot in the region as word gets out. Get there before fast food arrives.
Even the capital is a joy to walk around with little traffic chaos. But not only will it’s chilled out attitude and the caring smiles win you over as it also has super highlights like Luang Prabang and lesser known places like Pakse and Savannakhet.
…and it doesn’t get much better for a day on a river than the slow boat up, (not down) the Mekong.
Finish the day with the best beer in the region also. BEERLAO!
Baktrax do not go to tourist-only beaches.
All of our beaches will include some level of true local culture as well as the sun and sand.
Prachuap Khiri Khan is the highlight here. Want to get drunk on a beach with your fellow country people? Baktrax is not for you.
Indochina Highlights: Small Group Soft Adventure – Tour 33
Best local markets.
These markets will be the highlight of highlights for first-time visitors.
The food markets will be unlike anything back home. Thailand is the king of food markets in the region with every town having at least one.
Just a few of the great ones are an undercover one in Roi Et or street ones in Lopburi, Mukdahan, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phitsanulok & Samut Songkram. Not to mention numerous others in both Bangkok & Chiang Mai.
Isan, Insects & Laos: Small Group Adventure – Tour 1
Cultural discovery.
This is what Baktrax is all about. Our aim is to show you things that you could never dream up.
Firstly you will be amazed by the friendliness and hospitality of all the different cultures. Those who were worried about the safety factor in regards to crime will soon realize it is far safer in this regard than back home.
So you will find out that not everywhere in the world is like your own back yard. You will learn this in so many different ways. Nothing in the Baktrax world is the same as back home. Maybe you do not live in the best country after all.
With all today’s terrible events we suggest a visit to multicultural Malaysia would be a great starting point to put your cultural doubts to rest.

Everyone has had Asian food.
Wrong! Wrong! Wrong! Unless you have been to Asia of course.
A Thai or Vietnamese restaurant may be good back home but they don’t usually even get close to being on the ground.
You will get to taste the food you never even knew existed. Real Thai food that is never seen outside of Thailand. Restaurants in Malaysia where the locals eat every day that will knock your socks off.
You will get a great cross-section of both local and tourist-oriented food depending on the destination. There are just so many great ones. Almost impossible to have a bad meal in the region.
…Insects in Isan anyone?
Having a Cold Beer
Need we say any more? Most people on holiday enjoy an extra drink.
While a Carlsberg in Malaysia, Leo in Thailand, Angkor in Cambodia, Tiger or 333 in Vietnam are all top drops most travellers agree that Beerlao in Laos tops the list for both taste and cost.
But this activity is not a highlight alone.
It is actually more about where you partake in this activity. Everywhere is good but some places are great.
Start at our riverside restaurant in Bangkok on arrival. Then maybe it’s just sitting roadside at the local mini-mart table or a Mekong riverside restaurant in Luang Prabang or Thakek in Laos.
Baktrax is in no way about getting full but rather soaking up the atmosphere with a pre-dinner drink in an exciting destination.
Live Music Venues
All big cities have live music…so these will be easy to find.
But Pai in Northern Thailand is a place worthy of a special mention in this regard; for a small town, it has a number of venues.
Or sit outside our Khon Kaen hotel for nightly live music in an extra relaxed way.
This activity will be easy to find in many places with Thailand having even more choices that others.
Local Experiences
This is our first guarantee.
You will experience local culture on every single tour.
Some more so than others when we leave every other tourist far behind.
Think Isan Insects & Laos or Pure Central Thailand along with Experience Real Cambodia and Cambodia & Laos Combo if you really want cultural experiences with a difference.
You will always have local experiences and these will be the real highlights.
Local Transport
Baktrax only uses local transport. We travel exactly the same as the locals do. Again this will be an eye-opener much of the time.
Have you ever known a local bus to stop to pick up a parcel for delivery?
Overnight Train
Baktrax only uses overnight trains in Vietnam. While this gives us a unique local travel experience, it is primarily because of the convenience that we use them there.
We do not use overnight trains in Thailand to save on accommodation costs…do you want to spend 14 hours on an uncomfortable bench when you can fly to a comfortable bed in one hour?
It is also almost guaranteed you will buy something along the way.
So many chances to shop.
Some of the most amazing markets in the world from the massive Chatuchak market in Bangkok to the no less amazing touristy Night Bazaar in Chiang Mai.
Thailand & Malaysia have the biggest range overall but all countries will have things to tempt you.
The night market in Luang Prabang, Ben Thanh market in Ho Chi Minh City or Central Market in Phnom Penh are all worthy of a special mention too.

Day 1 Luang Prabang
Sa-Baidee! Greetings to Luang Prabang! On arrival, make your own way from the airport to your centrally-located hotel.
Once the royal capital of Luang Prabang, this enchanting city, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, holds a special place in the hearts of many travellers. Nestled among the hills in the northern region of Laos, where the Mekong and Khan rivers converge, it proudly carries the title of 'the best-preserved city in Southeast Asia' by UNESCO. The city exudes an atmosphere of elegance and tranquillity, making it a delightful destination for leisurely strolls through its charming streets, filled with boutiques, cafes, and quaint shops. Your local guide will be waiting to meet you at 6 pm to kick off your journey tonight. Airport transfers are not included. Our transfer portal offers the option to book your airport transfers for an easier arrival experience (additional charges apply). Access to this portal will be available through your Traveller Hub once your booking is confirmed.
Day 2 Luang Prabang Pak Ou Caves Luang Prabang
This morning, embark on a journey along the Mekong River, cruising towards the Pak Ou Caves. Situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Ou Rivers, these sacred caves hold great religious significance. They consist of two limestone caverns, and over the centuries, devoted villagers have placed Buddha images of various styles and sizes within them. The lower cave, named Tham Ting, is easily accessible from the river via a series of steps and can be explored during daylight hours. On the other hand, the higher cave, Tham Phum, is deeper and necessitates a torch for proper viewing.
Afterward, enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant and spend your afternoon exploring the city of Luang Prabang. One of your stops should be Wat Xieng Thong, often referred to as the "monastery of the golden city." This temple holds deep religious significance in Luang Prabang and is one of the most revered symbols of Buddhism in Laos. The temple's low-sweeping double-tiered roof, with a front portico forming a third tier, and its ornate interior and exterior decorations exemplify the classic Luang Prabang architectural style.
To cap off your day, ascend Phu Si Hill for a breathtaking sunset view over the city and the Mekong River below. The climb involves navigating 329 steps, and the path meanders past various temples, ultimately leading to the gilded stupa at the summit.
Day 3 Luang Prabang Kuang Si Falls Luang Prabang
Venture south of the town to reach the exquisite Kuang Si Falls, a charming cascade with multiple levels, boasting invitingly azure pools perfect for a refreshing mid-afternoon swim. Locally known as Tat Kuang Si, this three-tiered waterfall is situated approximately 29 kilometres from Luang Prabang City, and it's widely regarded as nature's most stunning masterpiece in the entire country.
Begin your journey at Kuang Si Falls with a visit to the Bears Rescue Centre, where you'll gain insights into the reasons behind their need for rescue. Along the way, explore a local Hmong village, preserving traditional knowledge of weaving and dyeing. Return to the town in the evening, enjoying some free leisure time before reconvening for dinner tonight.
Day 4 Luang Prabang Vientiane
Rising early in the misty morning is a worthwhile endeavour to witness the age-old tradition of saffron-robed monks embarking on their daily alms collection procession. This practice, deeply rooted in history, holds immense cultural significance. The townsfolk patiently gather in front of their homes, bearing offerings of food for the monks to collect and carry back to the temple. This ritual takes place in the early hours since, according to tradition, monks must abstain from eating after midday. By bestowing food upon a monk, you partake in the act of 'het bon,' or making merit, believed to bring favourable prospects in your next life.
If you’d prefer not to get up early, savour the morning ambiance of Luang Prabang at your leisure before embarking on the newest high-speed train journey to Vientiane, which takes approximately 1.45 hours.
Vientiane, often considered one of the most unhurried capitals in Asia, exudes an air of tranquillity where everything appears to unfold at a leisurely pace. The city offers a treasure trove of cultural wonders that can be explored on foot or, for those seeking a more relaxed experience, by jumbo (tuk-tuk). In this charming city, you'll encounter faded colonial mansions, tree-lined avenues, and ancient temples that collectively create an atmosphere of timeless beauty, particularly in the historic quarter along the banks of the Mekong River.
Upon your arrival, transfer to your hotel for check-in, and in the late afternoon, take a guided orientation walk through the city. Visit Carol Cassidy Lao Textiles workshop, studio and gallery creates woven art. Specializing in 100 percent hand woven silk, Carol and the 40 Lao artisans she employs produce exquisitely crafted wall hangings, scarves, shawls and custom furnishing fabrics. Lao Textiles was founded in 1990. There, Carol blends her own artistry with ancient local techniques and traditions to create contemporary woven art. Don't miss the opportunity to visit Wat Si Saket, the oldest standing temple in Vientiane, housing an impressive collection of nearly 7,000 Buddha images.
Day 5 Vientiane Hanoi
After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, complete the check-out process, and proceed to Vientiane airport. Since there's some time to spare before your flight, we'll make a brief visit to Pha That Luang, a grand Buddhist stupa adorned in gold, located at the heart of Vientiane, Laos. This is where you'll bid farewell to your guide in Laos before you board your flight to Hanoi. Upon arrival into Hanoi you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
The rest of your day is at leisure to explore the beautiful ancient capital city before a big day of touring tomorrow.
At 06:00pm your Tour Guide will conduct a Welcome Meeting at the hotel lobby where you will join the rest of your fellow travellers.
Day 6 Hanoi Halong Bay
In the morning, transfer from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay (approximately 3.5 hours drive).
After arriving at Ha Long, get on board to cruise around and have chances to admire the spectacular scenery of Ha Long Bay with fascinating natural formations while having lunch. Then you will have some time to visit villages to have a look at how local people spend their days. You also can join the cooking class aboard to learn how to make spring rolls - a Vietnamese traditional dish.
After having dinner aboard, you can enjoy some night activities such as squid fishing, drinking, listening to music or just simply enjoying the night sky of Ha Long Bay.
Note: please pack an overnight bag with any essentials that you will need for your cruise, such as a change of clothes, toiletries, and medications. You will return to the same hotel in Hanoi, so your remaining luggage will be sure to be kept safely for the night.
Day 7 Halong Bay Hanoi
In the morning, enjoy your light breakfast and relax for a while before exploring the cave system.
Afterwards, return to the cruise and enjoy the beautiful scenery until check-out time. We will then transfer back to Hanoi to check in the hotel.
Visit the Ho Chi Minh Complex (exterior) where the great President Ho Chi Minh rests in peace. We will visit the traditional stilt house and the respected One-Pillar Pagoda, the special pagoda with particular structure.
Later in the afternoon, an expert local guide will give you an insight into the intricacies and traditions of Vietnamese food culture including details on ingredients and historical backgrounds of popular northern dishes. You will eat as you go, trying seasonal fruits and sampling a tasty French inspired snack from a street cart. Walking through the maze of bustling streets that make up Hanoi’s Old Quarter, we tempt our taste buds with the famed Hanoi dish Banh Cuon at a local eatery. Watch in awe as the skilled chefs demonstrate for you how this tasty dish is put together. Continuing into the atmospheric heart of the Old Quarter, you will wander past street stalls and quiet residential lanes where you can observe local life that has changed little since Hanoi was founded over 1000 years ago. Your next two snack stops are at outdoor barbeque stalls. You can sit down with the Hanoi locals and sample various meat, vegetable and bread specialties that are flame grilled over hot coals for extra flavour. Now time for dessert as you adventure down a small alley to join in the local tradition of feasting on fresh fruit served in a cup and smothered with crushed iced and condensed milk – this specialty is one not to be missed!
This tour is suitable for all fitness levels, as it involves mostly walking.
Day 8 Hanoi Da Nang Hoi An
In the morning, we transfer to Tran Quoc Pagoda - the oldest of its kind in Hanoi, dating back to the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De Dynasty (544 - 548). The Buddhist shrine has undergone several changes throughout the years, particularly its renaming from An Quoc to Tran Quoc (protecting the country) by Emperor Le Huy Tong in the 17th century.
We will move to the Temple of Literature - famous for being the first university of Vietnam. You will recognize that this is a popular place for Vietnamese students to take commemorative photographs when graduating.

Discover one of Southeast Asia’s best-kept travel secrets, with our Laos tours and holidays. With the countries, undeniable qualities being overshadowed by its more established neighbours, Thailand and Vietnam, life in Laos is calm and serene, with the country’s historical isolation presenting travellers with a rare glimpse of traditional life in Southeast Asia.
After its doors opened to foreign visitors in the 1990s, Laos has seen a steady but relatively small influx ...
After its doors opened to foreign visitors in the 1990s, Laos has seen a steady but relatively small influx of tourists arriving, hoping to enjoy one of the region’s few remaining off the beaten track destinations. Those who do make the journey will find Laos a nation of quite staggering natural beauty, sleepy villages dot its verdant countryside while mist-veiled mountains, the mighty Mekong River and pristine forests provide a stunning backdrop to any visit.
For much of its history, Laos was free from foreign control, until being absorbed into French Indochina in the latter part of the 19th century. However, remnants of a long-forgotten past can still be found throughout the country, particularly at the mysterious ‘Plain of Jars’, a vast stretch of land scattered with countless prehistoric stone jars of varying sizes and shapes. The Khmer temple complex of Wat Phu meanwhile is one of the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. Spectacularly located close to the Mekong river, it has monuments to both Laos’ Hindu and Buddhist heritage, and whilst much smaller than Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, it has the advantage of receiving a fraction of the visitors.
Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former royal capital, is a major centre of Laotian Buddhist architecture. Its Buddhist monasteries are at the centre of a sacred alms giving ritual that is a privilege to witness - each morning saffron robed monks wander the quiet streets receiving alms from devout locals. Only a short drive from the city lies Kuang Si Falls, a little piece of paradise set amidst lush jungle where locals and travellers can embrace clear turquoise waters to escape the heat of the day.
Those seeking some exercise should head out into the foothills of the Annamite Mountains and support local guides and community projects by trekking in these enchanting surroundings of quite astounding natural beauty. Wild Frontiers also work closely with Lone Buffalo, a non-profit organisation that provides support and education to young people in some of Laos’ least affluent communities. Close to the Cambodian border the sleepy 4,000 islands region is a great place to relax. These tiny islands in the Mekong Delta offer great walking and cycling opportunities as well as fantastic spots to enjoy dazzling sunsets.
An often-overlooked aspect of Laos’ culture is its fantastic cuisine. Using a combination of ingredients and flavours familiar to lovers of Northern Thai food, alongside a distinctive Laotian twist, dishes like Or Lam – a thick meat, bean and aubergine stew – and Larb – a delicious meat salad that is considered Laos’ unofficial national dish. Although reminders of French colonial influences are still very evident, just ask the many purveyors of freshly baked baguettes on the streets of Vientiane or the customers of the Parisian style cafes found in most towns and cities!
Wild Frontiers prides itself on offering a wonderful array of exciting group tours and tailor-made Laos holidays. Helping you to get under the skin of this fascinating destination by meeting local people and getting off the beaten track

Indochina has a climate that ranges from cold and wet in the mountainous of the far north – mainly at night and in the early morning until the mist has been burnt off – to hot and humid in the south. October - February is the cool season so it’s really nothing too drastic. In northern Laos bring a fleece and waterproof jacket for the evenings and In southern Laos the daytime temp will generally be 80-100 degrees so hats and sunscreen all round.
LGBTQIA+ Guidance
When planning to travel as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, there may be additional things you wish to consider doing, such as:
- Speaking to one of our travel experts for information about travelling in your chosen destination and local attitudes towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community
- Checking the Human Dignity Trust map of countries that criminalise LGBTQIA+ people, which highlights potentially dangerous regions and countries
- Checking the ‘Local laws and customs’ section of your country's official foreign travel advice page

USEFUL INFORMATION
Health and Vaccinations
There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Laos though you should be up to date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in some parts of Laos. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.
Currency
In Laos the official unit of currency is the Kip.
To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .
Cultural Sensitivity
On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.
Overall Laos is very liberal towards travellers and their ways, but we always advise that modest dress should be reflected for both sexes, especially in the more remote areas. The region is predominantly Buddhist and so especially when visiting temples or monasteries you will need to cover your legs and shoulders. Do not wear hats in religious buildings, never touch anyone on the head and do not point your feet towards them (this would be an insult to a monk particularly). Also avoid eating within religious buildings. Generally, when entering a temple sanctuary, house or even guesthouse, you should remove your shoes. This will be apparent by the pile of shoes outside!
At Wild Frontiers we are very aware of the ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures. We realise that taking tourists through such a region can have a negative impact on the lives of those who live there and on all our tours we therefore go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive…after all, there are also many good things that the tourist can bring.
To help this process we ask that our clients do not hand out pens or sweets to children. As one sign in Egypt emphatically put it, ‘Please don't make beggars out of our children!' No matter how well intentioned, in our opinion the dolling out of free gifts fosters a ‘beggar mentality' that is ultimately extremely destructive to a society. In addition, we do not condone giving out money to beggars or ‘ students' .
However, we also realise that we are exceptionally privileged to be travelling in areas where most of the people have far less than us and that the desire to ‘help' can be very powerful. As a result, we ask that you refer to the Responsible Travel section of this document which highlights the Wild Frontiers Foundation, which supports specific projects in the areas where we travel.
Language & Religion
The official and dominant language of Laos is Lao. It is a tonal language of the Tai linguistic group whch only just over half of the population speaks. The remainder speak various ethnic minority languages, especially in the rural areas. Just under 70% of the population are Theravada Buddhist with the majority being officially unspecified. The proportion of Buddhist could be as high as 98% as religion remains one of the most important social forces in Laos. Christian missionary work is restricted by the government and the Christians are mostly in the Vientiane area, whereas Muslims are located towards the Myanmar border region.
Time
Laos is 7 hours ahead of GMT.
A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .
Food and drink
Food can be one of the highlights of travelling in Southeast Asia. Rice is the foundation for meals and almost all dishes are cooked with fresh ingredients, such as vegetables, freshwater fish, poultry, duck, pork, beef or water buffalo. Lime juice, lemongrass and fresh coriander give the food its characteristic tang, and various fermented fish concoctions are used to salt the food. Hot chillies, garlic, mint, ground peanuts, tamarind juice, ginger and coconut milk are other seasonings.
In terms of alcohol, the local beers are very good and reasonable wine can also be found, although they can be expensive by comparison. Most spirits are also generally available in larger towns, and make sure to try the Lao Lao whiskey!
