Meet MenteeBot — this AI helper robot could be walking around homes next year

A humanoid robot that's designed to help

Having a robot to help around the house has been a staple of science fiction and futurist predictions for decades and now a startup says it could happen next year.

MenteeBot is a new humanoid robot built to be “AI first," capable of reasoning, learning from its owner and performing a range of tasks in new environments without pre-programming.

Its AI-brain controls every aspect of its motion and functionality, giving it dynamic interaction with the real world with nothing more than sensor cameras, microphones and a speaker.

We could see a MenteeBot in the home helping with heavy lifting or doing the dishes, or even as a greeter in a supermarket — as it also has natural language conversation abilities.

What is MenteeBot?

MenteeBot was created by Mentee Robotics , a startup founded by three leading experts in the fields of natural language processing, computer vision and related fields.

Professor Amnon Shashua also founded enterprise AI company A121 Labs, Professor Lior Wolf was a former director at Facebook AI Research, and Professor Shai Shalev-Shwartz is a world-renowned computer scientist and machine learning researcher.

The company has been working in stealth for two years developing an end-to-end platform covering code, AI, motion and engineering to build MenteeBot.

“We are on the cusp of a convergence of computer vision, natural language understanding, strong and detailed simulators, and methodologies on and for transferring from simulation to the real world,” said Prof. Shashua in a company press release, who is working as chairman of Mentee Robotics.

Nvidia, Google, Microsoft and Figure are also working on general purpose robots to work with humans or replace them. Nvidia even has a framework for AI bots.

What can MenteeBot do?

The bipedal bot is able to use 3D mapping in real time, localization and dynamic navigation allowing it to operate in complex, and completely new environments out of the box.

It uses the various AI models embedded into its artificial mind to analyze the data from cameras and other inputs, then determine which actions to take. This includes following instructions.

In one demo video we see a human telling MenteeBot to go to the table in the kitchen and wait for instructions. It replies to confirm the request and then starts walking.

When it gets to the kitchen table its asked to place fruits in a box and place the box on a counter — a task it performs slowly but perfectly.

What makes MenteeBot different?

A robot powered by an AI mind is nothing new. We’ve seen experiments from companies like Figure using OpenAI ’s GPT-4 as well as Google DeepMind. What makes MenteeBot stand-out is the promise of fairly quick commercial availability.

Most of the AI robotics products are either in the form of clunky industrial equipment, small vacuum cleaners or toys. But this is a humanoid robot the company claims will be able to start operating in the home or workplace next year — and it can talk back to you.

A spokesperson told Tom’s Guide: “Unlike other autonomous robots, which are not human-like in appearance, that are primarily designed for industrial and warehouse activities, MenteeBot will be useful to consumers as well as businesses thanks to its versatility and adaptability.”

With this level of dexterity and adaptability, the robot is perfect for assisting people with a wide range of tasks in the home Mentee Robotics

This comes in part from the work Shashua has done with his previous companies in the fields of natural language processing, computer vision and large language model AI.

“Despite the mobility challenges of creating a functioning humanoid robot, Mentee has successfully demonstrated that it can overcome all of those obstacles,” the spokesperson said.

This is evident in the videos shared as part of the launch. The only notable issue I could see was speed. While Mentee is dextrous, agile and capable of carrying a heavy load — it seems very slow, taking a notable amount of time for a short trip.

That won’t be too much of an issue though; its purpose isn’t to run a race. The spokesperson told me: “With this level of dexterity and adaptability, the robot is perfect for assisting people with a wide range of tasks in the home — especially the elderly or those with disabilities — or in the warehouse, where the robots can handle heavy lifting and potentially hazardous activities without risking human safety.”

When will I be able to buy a MenteeBot?

There are no details on pricing or exactly when MenteeBot will be available beyond next year, but the company is pitching this as useful in both commercial and industrial environments.

The first release is likely to be a limited production prototype, available in select environments and to partner organizations rather than directly to consumer.

“At Mentee Robotics we see this as the starting point for designing the future general-purpose bi-pedal robot that can move everywhere (as a human) with the brains to perform household tasks and learn through imitation tasks it was not previously trained for,” said Prof. Shashua.

Researchers taught robots to run. Now they’re teaching them to walk

Robots might need to become more boring to be useful.

  • Rhiannon Williams archive page

Digit humanoid robot picking up a plastic tote

We’ve all seen videos over the past few years demonstrating how agile humanoid robots have become, running and jumping with ease. We’re no longer surprised by this kind of agility—in fact, we’ve grown to expect it.

The problem is, these shiny demos lack real-world applications. When it comes to creating robots that are useful and safe around humans, the fundamentals of movement are more important. As a result, researchers are using the same techniques to train humanoid robots to achieve much more modest goals.

Alan Fern, a professor of computer science at Oregon State University, and a team of researchers have successfully trained a humanoid robot called Digit V3 to stand, walk, pick up a box, and move it from one location to another. Meanwhile, a separate group of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, have focused on teaching Digit to walk in unfamiliar environments while carrying different loads, without toppling over. Their research is published in a paper in Science Robotics today.

Both groups are using an AI technique called sim-to-real reinforcement learning, a burgeoning method of training two-legged robots like Digit. Researchers believe it will lead to more robust, reliable two-legged machines capable of interacting with their surroundings more safely—as well as learning much more quickly.

Sim-to-real reinforcement learning involves training AI models to complete certain tasks in simulated environments billions of times before a robot powered by the model attempts to complete them in the real world. What would take years for a robot to learn in real life can take just days thanks to repeated trial-and-error testing in simulations.

A neural network guides the robot using a mathematical reward function, a technique that rewards the robot with a large number every time it moves closer to its target location or completes its goal behavior. If it does something it’s not supposed to do, like falling down, it’s “punished” with a negative number, so it learns to avoid these motions over time.

In previous projects, researchers from the University of Oregon had used the same reinforcement learning technique to teach a two-legged robot named Cassie to run. The approach paid off—Cassie became the first robot to run an outdoor 5K before setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest bipedal robot to run 100 meters and mastering the ability to jump from one location to another with ease .

Training robots to behave in athletic ways requires them to develop really complex skills in very narrow environments, says Ilija Radosavovic, a PhD student at Berkleley who trained Digit to carry a wide range of loads and stabilize itself when poked with a stick. “We’re sort of the opposite—focusing on fairly simple skills in broad environments.”

This new wave of research in humanoid robotics is less concerned with speed and ability, and more focused on making machines robust and able to adapt—which is ultimately what’s needed to make them useful in the real world. Humanoid robots remain a relative rarity in work environments, as they often struggle to balance while carrying heavy objects. This is why most robots designed to lift objects of varying weights in factories and warehouses tend to have four legs or larger, more stable bases. But researchers hope to change that by making humanoid robots more reliable using AI techniques.

Reinforcement learning will usher in a “new, much more flexible and faster way for training these types of manipulation skills,” Fern says. He and his team are due to present their findings at ICRA, the International Conference on Robotics and Automation, in Japan next month.

The ultimate goal is for a human to be able to show the robot a video of the desired task, like picking up a box from one shelf and pushing it onto another higher shelf, and then have the robot do it without requiring any further instruction, says Fern.

AI Scientists Create Humanoid Robot That 'Thinks' Its Way Through Tasks

T ech startup Mentee Robotics has unveiled its flagship robot, Mentee, whose prototype is able to listen to voice commands to complete a range of different tasks. The MenteeBot uses large language AI models (LLMs) to "think" through tasks from start to finish, making its own decisions along the way. The robot is 5'8 in height, weighs about 154 pounds, and is expected to be released sometime in early 2025, according to an announcement .

"We are on the cusp of a convergence of computer vision, natural language understanding, strong and detailed simulators, and methodologies on and for transferring from simulation to the real world,” said Mentee Robotics Chairman Asmnon Shashua in a statement. "At Mentee Robotics we see this convergence as the starting point for designing the future general-purpose bi-pedal robot that can move everywhere (as a human) with the brains to perform household tasks and learn through imitation tasks it was not previously trained for."

Multiple videos show Mentee at work. In one , the robot is able to determine the location of a kitchen table in an office environment, place fruit in a box without damaging it, and move the box to a specific location. Mentee has a "voice" that the robot uses to communicate when tasks are nearly complete or to affirm that it's heard the task. It's able to navigate its environments without them being pre-programmed, as Mentee uses algorithms to map out the 3D physical space around it in real-time, determines its own relative location, and is able to avoid obstacles as a result.

The robot is also able to hold and pass plates and other household objects without breaking them, will change the way it walks when it's carrying heavier objects, and can walk sideways or bend its "knees" and "elbows." Mentee has some tread on its feet, which are otherwise flat, but it's unclear how the robot might fare on uneven terrain.

Mentee is designed for warehouses, homes, and other indoor spaces. The startup's website delineates between a "domestic assistant" version and a warehouse version. Mentee will be able to carry up to 55 pounds and run for up to five hours on a single charge. The house helper version will be able to handle tasks like doing laundry, placing cutlery and dishes for meals, and learn to complete other chores in real-time, Mentee Robotics says.

MenteeBot's creators claim their bot can essentially tap into "unlimited" training data because it uses the simulation-to-reality ( Sim2Real ) machine learning method, which means the bot is trained in a simulated environment and those learnings are then applied to its real-world tasks.

MenteeBot's ability to "think" through requests without much human interference is similar to the recently announced AI software engineer , Devin, that's also able to complete complex tasks. But robotics takes AI into the physical world, allowing the tech to handle tedious, dangerous, or challenging physical tasks. Mercedes recently announced it's using humanoid robots from Apptronik to help out on its assembly lines, and Apple is also reportedly working on two different AI-powered home robotics products.
