The Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are home to around 480 mountain gorillas, more than half of the world’s entire population (the rest live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda). In Volcanoes National Park , the Rwandan part of the Virungas, twelve gorilla groups are now habituated for gorilla safaris, more than anywhere else in the world.

Planning your gorilla tours and safari in Rwanda

When to go gorilla tour trekking.

Gorilla Tours in Rwanda can be done throughout the year. The hiking itself can be more arduous in the rainy seasons from April – May and in November, but at an altitude of 2000m and more, it can of course rain here at any time of the year. For more details, see Rwanda’s climate.

The most popular times for gorilla tour tracking are during the drier months, between December and February, and from about June to mid-September.

Permits for gorilla tour trekking in Rwanda

Inevitably, securing permits for trekking gorillas over these popular periods can be difficult at short notice, so you should plan well ahead. We will make all the arrangements for buying your permits.

A maximum of 96 gorilla tour tracking permits are available each day. As of 6th May 2017, the Rwandan Development Board has increased the costs of the gorilla permits from US$ 750 to US$ 1,500 per person, for a one-hour visit. The new prices aim to strengthen conservation efforts and support the development of local communities. Travellers who are also spending a minimum of three nights in either Nyungwe Forest National Park or Akagera National Park during the months of November to May are entitled to a 30% discount – reducing the costs to US$ 1,050 per person. Amongst other things, the permit pays for a 24-hour guard for each gorilla group (armed teams constantly track each habituated group – like royal bodyguards in the UK!).

How fit do I need to be to track gorillas?

You don’t have to be super-fit for a gorilla tour tracking safari but it does help if you have a general level of fitness, if only to enhance your overall enjoyment of the experience. Walking will be at a slow pace, with time for breaks if needed. Depending on which group you track, and the time of year you go (gorillas tend to move down the mountains in the rains), you might find yourself walking on some pretty steep slopes for several hours. On the other hand, you could reach your group after a 30-minute stroll. It’s best to prepare for the most active option however, and if nothing else, a few hill walks before you leave would be beneficial.

Gorilla tracking etiquette

Mountain gorillas share 98% of our DNA and as such are very susceptible to catching human infections, particularly respiratory ones, but they don’t have our immune system to deal with them – a common cold could eventually prove life-threatening. Various rules for gorilla tour trekking are therefore in place to help protect these precious primates.

Only one group of tourists can visit the mountain gorillas each day and once you’ve found them, you’ll have just one precious hour in their company. If you have a cold, flu or other contagious infection, you shouldn’t go gorilla tour trekking.

You should keep a distance of 7m from the gorillas, although of course the gorillas themselves are unaware of this and will often get very close, in which case you should try to move away.

When you’re with your group, you should try not to make sudden movements and to keep your voices low so that the group remains relaxed. Although these mountain gorillas are now used to seeing people, do bear in mind that they are still wild animals and can sometimes react unexpectedly, so always heed your guide’s and trackers’ instructions.

You won’t be allowed to eat or drink when you’re with the gorillas.

What kit should you take for a gorilla tours and safari?

Paths on gorilla treks can be slippery, muddy and steep so sturdy walking boots are essential. Some people take thick gardening gloves because of the brambles and nettles en route and you should wear long trousers rather than shorts. A waterproof jacket may come in handy and take some water and a snack in case it’s a long trek. You might also find a walking stick or pole helpful.

For a small fee, porters are available at the trailheads to carry your backpacks and offer a hand during tricky parts of the hike. Even if you don’t really need them, hiring a porter is a helpful way to contribute directly to the local economy and chatting to them en route can enhance your experience both of local life and of your gorilla trek.

What it’s like on a Rwandan Gorilla Tour Trekking Safari

On the day of your gorilla tour trekking, you’ll set off very early in the morning to track to the apes from the edge of the forest. Your driver/guide will take you from your lodge (see places to stay in Volcanoes National Park ) to the park headquarters in Kinigi village.

The guides here speak excellent English and are very good. They will be taking you to a specific group of ‘habituated’ mountain gorillas, which are used to human visitors, and known well by the guides.

[alert-note]You’ll be divided into parties of 8 and, after a briefing on safety and gorilla tour trekking etiquette, you’ll be driven to the start of the trail to reach your mountain gorilla group. Your guide will then lead you along generally clear paths up into the forest, in radio communication with the trackers that stay with the group so that they can be located.[/alert-note]

The altitude is over 2,500m, so although the pace is unhurried, the hike is tiring and can be steep in parts, taking from 30 minutes to a few hours. Don’t be surprised if you feel a bit breathless at this altitude – this is perfectly normal.

Rwanda Gorilla Tours & Safari Adventure Itineraries

The various groups and their locations will obviously change from time to time: mountain gorillas often climb higher in the dry season and descend during the rains, they might move on due to pressure from wild gorillas and individuals will often join other groups.

When tracking gorillas, it’s possible to request to visit a specific group once you are at the park headquarters, but this can never be guaranteed. These are some of the groups currently habituated for gorilla safaris in Volcanoes National Park :

• The  Sabyinyo Group  has about 12 individuals, including two silverback gorillas, and is usually found relatively close to the edge of the forest (about 20–40-minutes’ walk), between Sabyinyo and Gahinga.
• Agashya Group , also known by its former name Group Thirteen, usually lives close to the Sabyinyo Group but can range very far and high. It has about 25 gorillas with 2 silverbacks.
• Usually living between the Karisoke and Visoke (sometimes called Bisoke) peaks are the  Amahoro Group , with about 17 individuals, and the  Umubano Group , which currently has 11 members. Both are usually further away from the headquarters than the Sabyinyo and Agasha groups, but easier to reach than the Susa Group.
• Originally studied by Dian Fossey, the  Susa Group  was the largest, with about 40 individuals, including 3 silverbacks. After a split (creating  Igisha Group ) in 2009, Susa now has 28 members. In the summer months in particular it can be a tough trek to reach this group high up on Mount Karisimbi, but it’s well worth the effort because of their number and because, uniquely, it has two sets of twins, which is very rare..
• The  Ugende Group  do the same, so it’s often a harder trek. The name means “on the move” – its 11 individuals shift regularly.
• The  Karisimbi Group , which split from the Susa group a few years ago, also lives in the Mt. Karisimbi area of Volcanoes National Park and is also suited to visits from more serious hikers. Both of these groups can potentially involve a full day’s trek. This group also underwent a split in 2012, and now has 11 individuals.
• The  Hirwa Group  has around 11 members including one silverback and another pair of twins. Together with the two pairs of twins in the Susa group, these are the only known surviving twins of mountain gorillas in the world. They’re also usually found on the slopes of Sabyinyo, and tend to be one of the easier groups to trek to.
• The  Kwitonda Group  has 18 members and was habituated in the DRC. They crossed the border into Rwanda in 2005, and were carefully tracked and are now also being visited on a regular basis, although they are known to range far.
• The  Bwenge Group , named after their silverback, has 11 members and can be a tough trek – they’ve had a lot of in-fighting and have lost a few family members, and they move around a lot, and faster.
• Isimbi Group  were formed after the Karisimbi group split in 2012, and includes Poppy, the oldest living female (though she went missing at the end of August 2018, so her future looks a little uncertain). They have 14 members.

The African continent is renowned for its once-in-a-lifetime animal encounters. Few are more memorable (or so frequently featured on traveler bucket lists) as coming face-to-face with mountain gorillas in their natural environment .

There are approximately 1,000 mountain gorillas left in the wild, divided across two distinct populations. The first lives in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park . The second, larger population lives in the Virunga Mountains, at the point where the boundaries of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) meet. Each country has its own national park in the Virungas. Respectively, these are Volcanoes National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Virunga National Park. 

Of these, Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is considered the best option for gorilla trekking. It is a safer country to visit than the DRC, with more developed infrastructure and a better choice of reliable tour operators. Meanwhile, Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is much smaller than its neighbors, and home to just one habituated gorilla troop. This means that there are far fewer trekking permits available, and, because the troop often moves across the border, there is a chance of missing the gorillas completely. 

Although Rwandan permits are considerably more expensive than Ugandan ($1,500 versus $700), they sell out less quickly, making it more likely that you will be able to travel on your chosen dates. Additionally, a day trip from Kigali is possible, which cuts down on extraneous costs.

From the best time to go to our favorite tours, here's what you need to know to plan your gorilla trekking adventure in Volcanoes National Park.

Volcanoes National Park has 12 gorilla troops that have been habituated for tourist encounters. Each one is made up of at least one alpha male, or silverback, and his harem of females and juveniles. Your adventure starts at the park headquarters in Kinigi at 7 a.m., when your group will be assigned to a troop and given a briefing on rules for visiting the gorillas. These rules include maintaining a distance of around 22 feet, and not hiking when sick with any contagious diseases that could infect the gorillas. Basic rules for safe interactions will also be outlined, from not using flash photography to keeping voices low and movement to a minimum. 

Your group will be the only one to interact with your allocated troop on the day of your visit. The maximum number of people in each group is eight, ensuring that the experience is kept as unobtrusive as possible for humans and gorillas alike. As nomadic creatures, gorillas spend their days on the move, foraging for the vast quantity of vegetation required to support their huge size. Because of this, it is difficult to predict exactly where each troop will be from one day to the next, although they tend to stick to a preferred general area. Much of the trekking experience consists of hiking through the misty forest to find them—a process that can take anywhere from 30 minutes to five hours or more. Generally, troops are assigned according to the fitness levels of each group and porters are available to help carry cameras and backpacks. 

Once your guide has located the troop, you will spend up to an hour sitting quietly within a few feet of them, watching as they continue to go about their daily routines unfazed by their human visitors. Encounters are strictly kept to this time limit to ensure that each troop is impacted on as little as possible. Gorillas are our closest relatives after chimpanzees and bonobos, sharing 98 percent of our DNA. As such, much of their behavior feels familiar—whether it’s a mother grooming her infant, or juveniles play fighting with one another while the adults forage for food. 

The climate in Volcanoes National Park is both cool and wet, so whenever you travel, you should be sure to dress appropriately. This means plenty of layers so that you can stay warm when sitting with the gorillas, but strip off when hiking. It also means waterproof jackets and pants, and sturdy hiking boots or shoes with sufficient grip for slippery, uphill terrain. There are plenty of stinging nettles, so thick-woven clothing and gaiters are also recommended. If you’re susceptible to sunburn, bring sunglasses, a sunhat, and sunscreen for when the sun makes an appearance in between downpours. 

With eight people permitted to visit each of Volcanoes National Park’s 12 habituated gorilla troops every day, there are only 96 permits available for any given date. This means that they sell out months in advance and getting hold of one can be quite competitive. Do not wait to book your permit until you are in Rwanda. Instead, book your permit first and then build the rest of your itinerary around it. You can purchase your permit independently through the Irembo government website ; however, the site is in Kinyarwanda and most visitors prefer to have their chosen tour operator navigate the process.

How to Budget 

Rwanda is often hailed as the world’s best destination for gorilla trekking. However, it is also the most expensive with permits costing $1,500 per person. Ten percent of this fee goes towards local community initiatives and may also be used to compensate farmers if the gorillas venture onto their land and damage their crops. This helps to keep the relationship between conservationists and residents amicable, as well as increase local support for gorilla conservation. 

In addition to the trekking permit, you will need to consider the cost of flights, accommodation, transportation, meals, tips, and optional extras. Often, the easiest way to budget is to book an all-inclusive package with a company that specializes in gorilla safaris. This way, you will know the total cost well in advance and have plenty of time to save up without worrying about unexpected expenses. Having said that, package prices vary considerably depending on the style of accommodation and other variables. Read on for our pick of the best package tours for all budgets. 

With trekking permits costing $1,500 per person, there’s no such thing as a cheap Rwandan gorilla trekking tour. However, locally owned company Katona Tours caters to budget travelers by offering an in-and-out experience that starts and ends in Kigali on the same day (eliminating the cost of accommodation in Volcanoes National Park). $1,850 per person includes transportation in a 4x4 safari vehicle, the services of an English-speaking guide and driver, your gorilla trekking permit, park entrance fees, and lunch at the local Muhabura Hotel. 

For a more immersive experience, consider extending your stay in Volcanoes National Park with this four-day itinerary from Intrepid Travel . It also begins and ends in Kigali, starting with a tour of the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Then, you’ll sleep overnight at a lodge on the outskirts of the national park before heading out on your gorilla trekking adventure the following day. The third day is reserved for other park activities, including visiting the Karisoke Research Center and tracking golden monkeys. On the last day, you'll head back to Kigali for a walking tour of the city. $4,835 includes transportation, accommodation, most meals, your trekking permit, and both activities in Kigali. 

South Africa-based luxury travel company andBeyond offers luxury gorilla trekking packages starting from $5,504 per person. Lasting five days and four nights, the tour starts and ends in Kigali and includes one day dedicated to tracking the gorillas and a second reserved for tracking golden monkeys (at an additional cost). Accommodation is included and involves stays at the luxurious Kigali Serena Hotel and Virunga Lodge. Also covered are your airport meet-and-greet, gorilla permits, most meals, soft and alcoholic drinks, scheduled transfers (including the exclusive use of a luxury vehicle), a nature walk, and a complimentary post-hike massage. 

Although gorillas are top of the wish list for most visitors, a hike through Volcanoes National Park also yields an opportunity to spot many other interesting species. These include endangered golden monkeys (of which there are two habituated troops), forest elephants, black-fronted duikers, buffaloes, forest hogs, and more than 200 bird species. Many of the park’s birds are endemic to the Albertine Rift, making them especially sought-after by keen birders. 

Also of interest is Karisoke Research Center , where legendary primatologist Dian Fossey began her 18-year research project on mountain gorillas in 1967. It’s also where she wrote her seminal book, "Gorillas in the Mist," made many discoveries about gorilla behavior that continue to form our understanding of the species today, and was eventually murdered in 1985. Today, visitors can tour the research center to learn more about the valuable work being carried out by resident scientists, as well as conservation initiatives put in place to ensure the future of the park’s gorillas. It is also possible to hike to Dian Fossey’s grave. 

Due to its proximity to the equator and its high elevation, temperatures in Volcanoes National Park stay consistently cool throughout the year. Expect average daytime temperatures of around 61 degrees F, and chilly nights that can drop as low as 43 degrees F. Rain and mist are also ever-present, although less so in the drier months from June to August. Lighter rainfall at this time of year makes it the best time to visit for gorilla trekking since the terrain is easier to navigate and the gorillas themselves are often more active. October, March, and April are the wettest months and are typically best avoided.

Getting There 

For most international visitors, the main port of entry to Rwanda is Kigali International Airport (KGL), located roughly 6 miles east of the Rwandan capital. From there, it’s just over 70 miles and a little under three hours by road to Musanze, the park’s closest town. Then, it’s another 30-minute drive to the park headquarters at Kinigi, from where all gorilla trekking tours depart. Most visitors either hire a car and driver to get to Volcanoes National Park or choose an organized tour with transfers included.  

Tourist visas are required for most nationalities and can be purchased on arrival at Kigali International Airport or any land border. You can opt for a single entry tourist visa (priced at $50 and valid for 30 days), or the East African Tourist Visa, which costs $100 but lasts for 90 days and permits entry into Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya.  

Before traveling to Rwanda, remember that the CDC recommends a variety of vaccinations, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and rabies . Proof of yellow fever vaccination is an entry requirement if you are traveling from any country where this disease is prevalent. Day 3: Golden monkey tracking and transfer back to Kigali

You will carry packed breakfast which you will have en-route in your 4×4 vehicle and after briefing, set off for a 116kms trip/2-3 hours’ drive to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri, Northwestern Rwanda.

Driving from Kigali Capital to Volcanoes National Park involves navigating via the hilly landscape of Rwanda. Arrive at Kinigi early for briefing on gorilla trekking rules, allocation of gorilla families and park guides then at around 8:00am, be prepared to hit the lush forest of Volcanoes National Park as you search for a gorilla group family.

Your gorilla trekking adventure today will take you 2-6 hours but this will depend on the nature of gorilla habitat, the physical levels and location of mountain gorillas . It offers you an opportunity to track gorillas in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. There are 10 habituated gorilla families and tracking most gorilla groups in the afro-montane forest usually takes a few hours.

Pack Enough Food.  Pack enough food before going for Gorilla Tracking. Gorilla Tracking is a very tiresome activity that may last up to 8 hours implicating you will need refreshments and eats (probably snacks) during the activity. The sad thing is you won’t find any spots to buy eats or drinks in the forests. It is highly recommended that you have a good breakfast on the gorilla trekking morning.

Water  – As you hike through the mountain forest, you kind of get dehydrated and you need lots of drinking water.

Boots  – Essential. The terrain is rough and in the forest, it is easy to slide over. Shoes with good grip are highly recommended. Avoid the cheap sneakers as they can’t match this do.

Gloves  – During the trek you might be grabbing trees, branches and vines, and your hands can get a bit scratched and generally beaten up if you’re not careful. Pack a tough old pair of gardening gloves. They might look a bit lame, but you’ll be glad you brought them.

A light rain jacket  – Bwindi and Virunga are both tropical rainforests, and there’s a good chance of rain almost year-round. Pack a light-weight poncho or rain jacket that you can roll up in your bag and bring out if necessary.

Long pants and shirts  – It’s best not to expose too much skin during the jungle trek, and remember to tuck your trousers into your socks – you really don’t want safari ants crawling up there.

Day 1: Meet in Kigali (at your hotel or Kigali Airport), Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Ranging in altitude from 2,400m to 4,507 the Volcanoes National Park (French: Parc National des Volcans) is dominated by the setting of volcanoes after which it is named. Day hikes to see the gorilla families can be strenuous on tracks climbing through the forest, and time is very limited once contact is made with the gorilla families. It is a rare and memorable experience to visit with these giant cousins of man.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Have breakfast and go to Volcanoes National Park offices for briefing, after setting off in the forest for gorilla trekking. Day 3: Golden Monkey Tracking, Transfer to Kigali & Genocide Memorial Visit

It is our day for another endangered primate encounter, this time tracking the golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park. After breakfast transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for briefing and later begin the hike over the volcanic terrain in search of golden monkeys in the bamboo forests.

The Golden Monkey may not be the most well-known primate, but is certainly an enjoyable, little creature that is worth visiting. It is a small curious monkey, golden in color, and loves to scamper around the trees. Golden monkeys are named after their golden-orange fur, and like mountain gorillas, are also considered endangered species. Conservation efforts have been put in place by Volcanoes National Park to ensure that the monkeys are protected – especially from poachers.

There is a habituated family of monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, where tourists can track and stay with them for a period of 1 hour hour depending on where they nested the previous night and how far it is from the starting point. The monkeys live in groups or troupes of 30 led by a principal adult male. Golden monkeys are primarily to be found in the bamboo forest that skirts the lower slopes of the volcanoes. They are quite more active in the bamboo canopy.  Golden monkeys are opportunistic feeders. What they feed on could be the availability of fruits, leaves of bamboo trees, shoots of bamboo, shrubs, flowers, and invertebrates, and these make it restricted to the highland forest, mostly the bamboo forest.

Golden monkey tracking starts at Volcanoes National Park headquarters at 7:00 a.m. for a pre-tracking briefing (on the dos and don’ts of tracking the golden monkeys). The actual trek begins at 7:30 a.m. Hiking through the forests to see the golden monkeys is not as strenuous as gorilla trekking because golden monkeys live in lower areas, so tourists do not track for more than 3 hours. When tourists encounter the golden monkey family, they are given one hour to spend with them (to take photographs and observe their behavior). With this activity, there is no minimum number of tourists who track each group and the age limit is 12 years.

After the golden monkey trekking, we shall drive to Kigali city and visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial. Your driver shall then drop you off at your preferred hotel in Kigali.

Tips for Rwanda Gorilla Trekking – how to have the best gorilla trek in Rwanda

• Purchase your gorilla trekking permits as far in advance as possible for priority assignment to a choice group and to be sure you obtain a permit at all.
• You will be with a group and guide. Also, consider hiring a local person as a porter assistant, even if you are very fit. This adds a great cultural dimension to the experience and is not really expensive.
• If you have the choice, visit the largest group available to you to maximize the photo opportunities and the different behaviors you will see.
• Prepare for the possibility of rain at any time of year.
• Wear long sleeves and slacks and bring glove to protect against thistles nettles and thorns.
• Wear durable hiking shoes, you will be off trail in rough terrain.
• Expect you might have a long hike. Be in the best physical shape you can be.
• Understand your camera well, Cameras with built-in video are very good. Telephoto ability helps.
• Consider traveling with a companion or friend with whom you will share the lifelong memory of the encounter.
• Listen to the advice of your guide. Trust that he or she really wants you to get great photos and have the best possible experience.

It’s important to know what you’re getting into before setting out on a gorilla trek. The hike through the forest is challenging and tough-going (your guides will often have to machete a path through the ferns that clog the undergrowth), but it’s within reach for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. You will get muddy though. And sweaty. Beneath the forest canopy the humidity is very high, and it’s a good idea to bring a canteen of fresh water to hydrate as you go.

If you are particularly concerned about the terrain, consider hiring a local porter. The porters will carry your bag, and help to you navigate some of the steeper, or trickier sections of the trek. In fact, hiring a porter on a gorilla trek is a common practice by travellers of all ages and abilities. Not only does it make the trek easier for you, but you’re also providing a valuable source of employment for locals. The minimum cost of hiring a porter on a gorilla trek is $20USD,

Eventually, after bush-bashing your way through the scrub, you’ll come across a gorilla family, peacefully playing in a forest clearing. Your trekking guides and rangers will have prepared you for what to expect. There’s no direct interaction with the gorillas (unless one moves past you), but you should get pretty close. You’ll have a good 45 minutes to an hour to just sit and observe these animals in their natural habitat. We promise it’s something you’ll never ever forget.

Gorilla trekking can cost from USD $1,500 per person on the low-end, to $5,000 and above on the luxury end.

The main costs of a gorilla trek are the tracking permits, accommodation, transport, meals and tips, plus optional expenses like hiring a porter.

Three big factors govern the price: where you go (Rwanda vs Uganda), going in a group vs private tour, and the class of accommodation you’re looking for.

Most international visitors to Uganda and Rwanda book everything in an organised tour package; this is by far the easiest route.

How much does gorilla trekking cost?

Cost breakdowns and how to budget.

Most visitors use a tour operator who will arrange a driver guide for the duration of the tour. Typically, the driver will welcome you at the airport, take you to your lodge and accompany you to the start of the gorilla trekking point. The majority of visitors will extend their trip several days afterwards, with the same vehicle and driver.

The gorilla trek starts early in the morning, so you’ll want accommodation near to your chosen national park entrance. It's recommended that you arrive at your lodge the day before you trek and then spend a second night at the same lodge. Most accommodation options are full board.

The majority of lodges are independently owned. Some are owned by locals, and others by international operators. Generally speaking, locally-run establishments are cheaper. Some are commercially run, and others support local projects. High-end lodges often invest in corporate social responsibility projects around the lodges. Internationally owned establishments often have more years in the business and thus give a better overall experience, at a price.

Although your gorilla tracking permit does include a fee for the ranger guides, tips are greatly appreciated. You’ll also find it very useful to hire a porter so should allow a fee of $10- $20 per person plus tip.

Rwanda gorilla trekking costs

In Rwanda a gorilla tracking permit ordinarily costs US$1,500 for international tourists.

At the time of writing, there are 96 permits available per day. You can buy your permit up to two years in advance through the Rwanda Development Board or through a registered tour company.

Rwanda pitches itself as the high-end gorilla trekking destination; this is reflected in the higher price of the permit and the bigger range of top-end accommodation. Rwanda has some sensational luxury properties and a fair number of overpriced mid-range ones, so book with caution.

Typical accommodation costs in Rwanda:

Budget : $30 - $50 per person per night based on two sharing

Mid-range: $80 - $250 per person per night based on two sharing

Luxury: $300-$3,000 per person per night based on two sharing

Rwanda’s gorilla trekking region is only two hours’ drive from Kigali, making the gorillas far more accessible than in Uganda. In theory this means you can save on transport and accommodation by doing a shorter trip. It’s possible to do a one-day gorilla trek in Rwanda from around $1,700 per person. A two-day gorilla tour will start from £1,900. A three-day luxury gorilla safari may cost $2,000 to $5,000 per person. Tours include one gorilla tracking permit, private transport, English-speaking guide, accommodation and meals. Charter plane and helicopter transfers are additional options.

My advice is to slow it right down and don’t rush in and out just to track the gorillas – you’ll be doing yourself and your hosts a great disservice.

Uganda gorilla trekking costs

Starting June 2024 the price for a gorilla permit in Uganda is US$800 per person.

There is also the option for an extended "habituation experience" permit which allows approximately four hours with the gorillas, rangers and researchers and costs $1,500.

As an incentive for visitors to explore less-visited corners of the country, gorilla permit holders are entitled to a day’s free entrance to either Mount Elgon National Park in eastern Uganda or Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve in western Uganda. This fee doesn't cover activity fees, only park entrance.

With 23 habituated gorilla families in Uganda and a maximum of eight visitors per group, there are a total of 184 permits available per day.

Gorilla tracking permits can be purchased up to two years in advance through a registered tour company.

Uganda has more budget and mid-range accommodation options than Rwanda and also has a number of luxury lodges.

Budget : $50-$70 per person per night based on two sharing

Mid-range: $80-$120 per person per night based on two sharing

The cheapest three-day gorilla trek will cost around $1,200 per person and will include one gorilla tracking permit, private transport, an English-speaking guide, accommodation and meals. A three-day luxury gorilla safari may cost upwards of $3,000 per person. Higher-priced tours may include flights to one of the small airstrips a half-hour drive from the gorilla tracking region.

Budget gorilla trekking

Although the permit is non-negotiable, it is possible to cut other costs by travelling independently. In my experience, this is perfectly safe and is a great way to experience local culture unfiltered by the tourist industry.

Using public transport, the most accessible gorilla-tracking goals are Buhoma and Rushaga in Bwindi, both of which are accessible by bus and have a fair choice of affordable accommodation. If you are self-driving, any park in Uganda or Rwanda is a realistic goal.

Note that in Uganda you can only secure a permit via an authorised tour operator, but you're free to make all the other travel arrangements yourself. Just be very careful that the family you have the permit for is close to where you book your lodge.

This 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla Tour package takes you to the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda for an amazing gorilla tracking experience. You will not only observe mountain gorillas in the wild but will also have an opportunity to tour the city of Kigali , the genocide memorial center, the twin lakes (Burera and Ruhondo) the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village to understand the Kinyarwanda Culture. Day 3 will be the last day of your trip. Wake up at your own time and ensure that you have enough rest so that you are ready for the long flight back to your country. If you are still in the country, the driver will take you to your hotel or residence. In case you didn’t go for the Kigali city tour for some reason, this is the day to do it. We hope you leave with a good impression about the beauty of Rwanda and the gorillas.

In fact, if you use a car, you only need to drive for 15 minutes to get to the park offices. Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel provides high quality rooms with bedding, clean bathrooms, flush toilets, Satellite Television, a fridge, a fire place, warm showers, working desks/tables and air conditioning. Most of the rooms have single, twin or double beds. The Hotel has a bar, a restaurant, sauna, steam bath and a large swimming pool. There is a presidential suite which can be offered as a surprise to guests booking the standard luxury rooms. We highly recommend Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel if you are looking for an accommodation facility which is affordable but offering quality rooms and majestic views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Virunga Hotel: Virunga hotel is part of a string of hotels with establishments in both Rwanda and Uganda. It is situated in Musanze district and close to the border with Uganda. Like the name suggests, the hotel is set in a strategic location allowing guests to get beautiful views of the Virunga Volcanoes. Although Virunga Hotel is classified as budget, there is nothing budget about it. All rooms are spacious and self-contained. Each room has a flush toilet, bathroom, free Wi-Fi and a Television screen. Outside the rooms, there is a tennis court, a restaurant, conference rooms and ample parking space. Because of its closeness to the park offices, Virunga Hotel is the perfect base for a tourists planning for gorilla trekking, visiting the tomb of Diana Fossey, golden monkey tracking and hiking one of the Virunga volcanoes. Book with Virunga hotel if you are looking for comfort at a very affordable price.

Davinci Gorilla Lodge: This mid-range safari lodge is built just next to the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park (on the foot of mount Karisimbi). It is arguably the best mid-range accommodation facility within Musanze. Davinci offers services that rival the luxury hotels in the area. Its rooms are decorated with beautiful Africa art but there is also free Wi-Fi, a large bed, hot water, flush toilets and sofas. The rooms also have a balcony were guests can sit and view the volcanoes or experience the beautiful nature in the immediate surrounding. Other amenities include a bar, parking space and a restaurant serving international cuisines.

Mountain Gorilla Distribution in Africa

There are only 880 mountain gorillas left on earth according to 2011 gorilla census report. Half of this population is found in the misty Jungles of Bwindi impenetrable National Park in Uganda, while the remaining population lives in the Virunga Mountains that straddle Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. The fact that mountain gorillas are critically endangered, their habitat is now heavily protected from human activities. Majority of these gentle giants live a wild existence, far from human reach. However, there are some gorilla groups habituated for tourism purposes, tracked and observed by small numbers of visitors under the watchful eyes of park scouts. A maximum of 8 persons can visit each gorilla group day.

Where to see the Mountain gorillas in Rwanda?

Rwanda is a very small country offering a perfect destination for mountain gorilla trekking in Africa . It offers a short gorilla tour in combination with a wildlife safari or beach stay elsewhere in East Africa. Gorilla safaris in Rwanda take place in Volcanoes National Park, which is only 120 minutes drive on tarmac road from Kigali capital of Kigali international airport. A minimum of one-night stay is recommended for a single gorilla trek, and two nights would be ideal for both gorillas and golden monkeys.

Gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park – Rwanda

Rwanda has over 10 gorilla groups habituated for tracking by tourists. Many birth and death are registered in each group which means that the groups keep on increasing and decreasing. Some female juveniles may decide to shift to other groups and others prefer leaving alone. Below are the family names.

• Agasha gorilla (group 13) this group derives its name from the number of individuals made up that group. The group had only 13 members hence its name, however, the group now is made up of 25 members and its located in Sabyinyo Volcano,
• Amahoro group consists of 17 individual members and it’s situated on the slopes of Bisoke Volcano some times tracking in this group is a bit difficult. The group is led by a dominant silverback known as Ubumwe. This group is regarded as the most peaceful group among other Rwanda gorilla groups, as its name suggests Amahoro means “peaceful group”.
• Bwenge comprises of 10 members and it’s positioned between the group is mostly found in the Karisoke Volcano as well as Sabinyo Volcanoes, some level of physical fitness is needed when tracking in this group. The trails are sometimes muddy and very steep. The name bwenge is amazing means brightness and the leader of the group is called bwenge responsible for all activities in the group.
• Hirwa has 12 members and it’s situated between Sabyinyo and Gahinga Volcanoes. This is a new group, it comes into existence on the 17 th of June 2006 and the group originated from Sabyinyo and Agasha who joined and formed this group. The name wonderfully means lucky one.
• Kwitonda consists of 18 members and it’s located within Sabyinyo and Gahinga Volcanoes. Kwitonda means ‘’humble and the group has two silverbacks and one blackbuck. This group is said to have migrated from the democratic republic of Congo. In this, the gorillas tend to move far but however much that’s the case tracking is possible although it’s considered one of the toughest groups to track.
• Ntambara has 12 members and it’s found between Bisoke as well as Sabyinyo Volcanoes. The name means warfare.
• Sabyinyo comprises of 12 individuals and it’s discovered in Sabyinyo Volcano. This group is the easiest to track since is nearer to the park. The name simply means Old man’s teeth. The group is led by the dominant silverback called Guhonda, and it is also considered one of the oldest Rwanda gorilla groups.
• Susa is made up of two subgroups, it consists of 43 members, it’s found in Karisimbi volcano and its one of the most difficult group to track. It’s the largest group given that it’s subdivided into two families. The susa group is the group which Dian Fossy studied during her many years in Rwanda until when she was killed in 1985 by the poachers whom she had made her self unpopular
• Ugyenda has 11 members and it’s positioned between Bisoke and Sabyinyo Volcanoes. Ugenda means “being on the move” it always move from one area to another in search of a new adventure, so you are always advised that before booking with this group to first consult with a tour company to assure you that the group is present.
• Umubano consists of 11 members and it’s discovered in Bisoke Volcano, it originated from the Amahoro group. The name means togetherness. With all this information about gorilla trekking, you can choose any group you wish to track. Enjoy your safari in Rwanda

When to go gorilla trekking in rwanda.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Gorilla trekking in Uganda takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable forest and Mgahinga gorilla national park . Bwindi only has about 18 habituated gorilla groups located in the four sectors namely; Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaha. Mgahinga national park has one habituated gorilla group, known as Nyakagezi, one of the best and easiest gorilla groups to visit in Africa .

Besides gorilla tracking, Bwindi National Park is the only destination for gorilla habituation in Uganda , excellent birding, Batwa experience, forest walk, cultural encounters, and many others. Mgahinga, on the other hand, is famous for golden monkey tracking, birding, Batwa trail, Mountain hiking (Muhabura, Sabyinyo and Gahinga).

Gorilla Tracking Permits / Passes

A gorilla permit acts as permission to visit gorillas in the wild bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park . Booking gorilla permits in high seasons can be difficult at short notice. You are advised to plan your safari well ahead because the demand for gorilla trekking permits is very high in search seasons. We need ample time to make proper arrangements for booking your permits/passes.

A maximum of 8 persons allowed visiting each gorilla group per day. Permits cost US$750 per person per visit for foreign non residents. Foreign Residents leaving in Rwanda, as well as Foreigners leaving in East Africa with work-permits East Africa to have a discount on gorilla permits. We expect negotiations to reduce the cost of gorilla passes in Rwanda as it is in Uganda during the low, rainy season (April, May and November). So contact us for further information on this if you’re thinking of taking a gorilla trekking safari in April, May and November. Contact us for updates. In Uganda, gorilla permits cost US$600, in low seasons, the cost reduces to US$350.

Do I need to be fit to go gorilla trekking?

Mountain gorillas live in montane forests of Virunga Volcanoes National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, thus, the trek in search for these gentle giants goes through varied vegetation and slippery terrain. You will need a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to climb up muddy slopes and through the thick growth. However, if you are not fit, you can hire porters to push/pull you when you get stuck or carry you on stretchers up to the gorillas.

What to wear for gorilla trekking expedition?

During the trek, expect to get muddy and rained on, therefore, a waterproof jacket is recommended, hiking shoes, garden gloves, a hut, Insect repellent, long trousers to protect your legs against nettles, and a T-shirt with a long-sleeved shirt over the top. Don’t forget a waterproofed day-pack for your camera, water bottle and snacks. Hire a porter to carry your day-pack and assist you up on steeper slopes. Here you directly create employment opportunities to local people and you contribute to the conservation of the mountain gorillas and their habitat.

Minimum Age for gorilla tracking in Rwanda and Uganda

One must be at least 16 years old. There is no flexibility to this rule, its enforced by the park management. There is no upper age limit.

The cost of gorilla trekking in Rwanda is high with the Rwanda gorilla permit price at $1500 per tourists, leaving many wondering why the permit price is much higher than Uganda and DRC Congo where the same gorillas are located.

By nature of location Volcanoes national park has a mountainous landscape with 2 volcanoes situated inside the park – the Bisoke volcano as well as mount Karisimbi – the volcano where the famous Dian Fossey the American climatologist who pioneered and championed mountain gorilla conservation in the east and central Africa is where she setup her base and research karisoke. The Volcanoes national park is made of bamboo forest cover which allows sunlight to penetrate through the bamboo giving more light as you trek the mountain gorilla forest in search for your gorilla family, unlike Bwindi impenetrable forest forest which an afromontane forest with thick vegetation cover.

Volcanoes national park hosts over 480 mountain gorillas, holding the largest number of gorillas of the 3 parks that is Virunga and Mgahinga national park and is home 10 habituated gorilla families and a number of gorilla groups still under habituation process which are distributed throughout the national park. Gorillas are nomads and they freely move in the jungle but rare do gorilla families meet and mix, and if they ever meet, each family member knows its group and can never be lost around the forest. As such some gorilla families are located along the lower slopes and these are the simple families to trek, while others are located mid slopes and these are the medium groups to trek and tough families are situated up hill and require hiking up hill and low to locate them. Lost in Rwanda: Trekking to Mountain Gorillas in the Rain

Rwanda is a land of rolling hills, lush green landscapes, and an indomitable spirit forged by resilience. 

The East African country’s historical and cultural draw of rising above its brutal genocide in 1994, is blended with the transcendent experience of trekking into the misty jungles of Volcanoes National Park to come face to face with endangered mountain gorillas.

For Steve Conradie and Andre van Kets, co-founders of Discover Africa, together with Alice Lombard, the company’s Head of Sales, a recent recce during the rainy season of November last year, offered a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Their seven-day trip from South Africa to the heart of Rwanda saw them get more than a little wet, but their reward nonetheless was a profound encounter with these majestic gorillas. 

Stepping into the Gorilla’s World

The trek began early in the morning, under a light drizzle that only heightened the sense of adventure.  

After a rigorous two-hour trek that took them over flat grasslands and past small farms, it became clear that every inch of land in Rwanda is cherished and cultivated.

“Everywhere you go, not a single piece of land is unused. It’s remarkable how connected the Rwandan people are to the land,” states Van Kets.

Eventually the thick, dense forest seemed to fold in around them. With rhythmic precision, each swing of their guide’s machete blade sliced through the thick, tangled vegetation. The steady drip of rain added to nature’s percussion as their small group made their way through the verdant landscape. 

The air became heavy with mist and anticipation. Each stroke of the blade clearing the path to a moment of profound connection—a moment they found both exhilarating and humbling. 

The most rewarding part is that initial encounter with the gorillas, “No words can express that feeling!” says Lombard. 

Van Kets was struck by the calm and curiosity of the gorillas during that initial moment of eye contact.

“It’s not just seeing them, but when they see you, that’s the moment you feel most vulnerable,” says Van Kets. “But as they grow comfortable with you, curiosity takes over, and some even come close enough to touch you,” he adds.

As head of sales, Lombard knows all too well that the best time to do a gorilla trek is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. This is when hiking conditions are most favourable.

Yet, she adds, it’s a trip that can be planned for any time of year, even in the low rainy season.  

“The forest was very slippery and muddy,” according to Lombard. “Once we arrived at the area where the family of gorillas were, it was difficult to get photos due to the pouring rain. However, that did not take away from the experience,” according to Lombard.

Witnessing a mother gorilla sheltering her baby from the rain was quite moving. “It was incredibly endearing and so human-like—it truly felt like a special connection,” she says. 

The Essence of Conservation Economics

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is more than just an extraordinary wildlife encounter; it’s a crucial element of conservation and community support.

The high cost of the gorilla permits , at $1,500 per person, is a deliberate strategy aimed at limiting foot traffic while generating revenue that funds conservation initiatives and benefits local communities.

“You’re aware of where the funds go, and it makes the experience worthwhile, knowing it supports ongoing research and conservation. It’s evident that the country benefits from these efforts,” Lombard explains. “It’s all about ensuring the longevity of this endangered primate.”  

Rwanda’s concerted conservation efforts, including strict protection policies, have seen its gorilla population increase from about 620 in 1989 to over 1,000 today, making them the only great ape species experiencing a population increase.

The Naming of the Gorillas Ceremony

One such example is the annual Naming of the Gorilla’s Ceremony , modelled after the centuries-old tradition Kwita Izina, which sees Rwandans name their children in the presence of family and friends.

The gorilla naming ceremony was inaugurated in 2005. It has since become a global celebration of conservation, where research partners, rangers and trackers who protect the gorillas have the honour of naming the new additions. Some  397 gorillas have been named in the last 19 years. It certainly an auspicious time to plan a gorilla trekking safari, with the following ceremony scheduled for 18 October 2024.

The local guides and porters, hailing from nearby villages, play a significant role in enhancing the experience, adds Lombard, explaining that they are “not only knowledgeable but also deeply committed to ensuring a safe and memorable trek.”

“Their expertise and the care they take in guiding and informing you add immense value,” says Lombard. “Many of them have done thousands of treks, so they are very helpful and full of information. They know what guests want, especially to get that shot with the camera. They try their best to make it happen but are ever-mindful that, as humans, we’re entering the sacred space of the gorillas.” 

Lombard also recommends visiting the Dian Fossey Museum before the trek to build anticipation and deepen your understanding. “The museum is interactive and informative, offering insight into Fossey’s pioneering work.”

A Broader Perspective: Exploring Rwanda’s Heritage

While the gorilla trek was undoubtedly the highlight of the trip, the team’s time in Rwanda offered much more.

“To see how the country has transformed from such devastation into a place of unity and hope was incredibly moving,” says Van Kets, “It is a testament to Rwanda’s resilience and the vision of its people.”

Lombard adds further insight stating, “Rwanda is a country of incredible beauty and warmth, from the clean streets to the friendly faces of its people. It’s also the cleanest country I’ve ever seen – from the capital city of Kigali with zero litter to the smaller rural towns – it was wonderful to see this!”

How hard are Rwanda gorilla safaris?

The trek is not so hard like Uganda’s.

Most clients do not take long to locate gorillas in Rwanda.

It’s only on minimal occasions where when clients take long without locating gorillas.

These apes are always on the move every other day, and if they climb up the mountain, then locating them can involve a hard trek.

Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park is the number one tourist destination in Rwanda .

It’s located in the northwestern part of the country, covering an area of 160 square kilometers.

Volcanoes National Park was first gazetted in 1925 as part of Albert National Park in Congo, covering only parts of Mount Karisimbi , Mount Mikeno , and Mount Bisoke .

The main aim was to protect the endangered mountain gorillas.

In 1929, the park was expanded into Belgian Congo and Rwanda, covering 8,090 square kilometers and run by the Belgian colonial government.

In 1958, 700 hectares of the park were cleared for human settlement, and another 1,050 hectares were cleared between 1969-1973 to grow pyrethrum.

The famous American primatologist, known as Dian Fossey , came to the park in 1967 to study and research mountain gorillas.

Dian Fossey worked tirelessly to study and protect mountain gorillas, which were almost extinct at that time.

She established the Karisoke Research Institute and put an end to poaching at Volcanoes National Park.

Unfortunately, she was murdered by unknown individuals in her cabin in 1985.

Volcanoes National Park headquarters was attacked in 1992, and most rangers and park staff were killed.

The park became a battlefield during the Rwandan genocide , leading to increased poaching, deforestation, bush burning, and other illegal activities.

The park was later reopened for tourism in 1999 and has since become safe to visit.

Volcanoes National Park is one of only four national parks where tourists can trek mountain gorillas in the world.

There are over 15 habituated mountain gorilla families you can visit while at the park.

A group of eight tourists is allowed to visit each mountain gorilla family daily.

Volcanoes National Park is also a birder’s paradise, boasting 180 species of recorded birds, with 16 of these species being Albertine Rift endemics.

Some examples of birds found in the park include Rwenzori double-collared sunbird, Baglafecht Weaver, scarlet-tufted malachite sunbird, Rwenzori turaco, red-faced woodland warbler, Ladgden’s bush shrike, handsome francolin, Doherty’s bush shrike, brown-necked parrot, dusky crimson wing, African long-eared owl, and Archer’s Robin chat, among others.

Golden monkeys can also be tracked in Volcanoes National Park.

This unique species of monkeys are endemic to the Virunga Conservation Area in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They live in troops of up to a hundred individuals in the lower slopes of the Virunga Mountains.

Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park is the only Savannah national park in Rwanda, covering an area of 1,122 square kilometers.

The park derives its name from Kagera River, which flows within the park, bordering Tanzania.

The park is characterized by swamps, savannah grasslands, and montane areas.

It is the largest protected wetland in eastern-central Africa.

The park was established in 1934 by the colonial Belgian government and was also called “parc aux lycaons” because it hosted the highest population of African wild dogs.

Unfortunately, a disease broke out and killed all the African wild dogs, with the last one seen in 1984.

Black rhinos were introduced in the park in the 1950s from Tanzania, but all the rhinos were unfortunately poached, and the last one was seen in 2007.

In recent years, the park has made efforts to revive by reintroducing several animals and implementing conservation efforts.

Akagera National Park is home to various mammals, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing.

You can enjoy both day and night game drives in the park and see animals such as buffalos, elephants, zebras, duikers, bushbucks, Masai giraffes, klipspringer, defassa waterbucks, sitatungas, rhinos, lions, and many others.

Akagera National Park is the number one birding destination in Rwanda , with over 500 species of birds recorded.

Approximately 100 of those species can only be found in the park and not elsewhere in the country.

Some examples of birds found in the park are the short-tailed pipit, brown-chested lapwing, crested barbet, dimorphic egret, blue-shouldered Robin chat, Eleonora’s falcon, northern brown-throated weaver, amur falcon, and grasshopper buzzard, to name a few.

Akagera National Park offers three prescheduled boat cruises at the splendid Lake Ihema .

The boat cruises provide an opportunity to explore the lake’s flora and fauna, as well as spot water birds, crocodiles, and hippos up close.

Fishing at Akagera National Park can be done in designated areas of Lake Shakani.

The common species of fish caught are catfish and tilapia. You can enjoy your catch at your hotel for dinner, and fishing permits cost only $25 per day.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is located in the southeastern part of Rwanda, covering an area of 940 square kilometers.

Nyungwe is home to one of the oldest forests in Africa, boasting very rich biodiversity with 13 species of primates, 120 species of butterflies, 322 species of birds, 38 species of reptiles, 79 species of mammals, 1068 species of plants, 140 orchids, and much more.

Nyungwe Forest was almost extinct due to human activities such as wood cutting, bush fires, land clearing for settlement, and poaching.

In 1974, the last buffalo in Nyungwe Forest was killed.

The forest was later divided into areas allowing sustainable use and timber harvest by the government in 1984.

The Uwinka headquarters and several trails were set up in 1987 but were unfortunately destroyed during the Rwanda genocide of 1994.

Reconstruction and establishment started in 1995 but were not open to tourists.

The last elephant was killed by poachers in 1999, leading the government to establish Nyungwe as a national park in 2004 to protect primates and Afromontane rainforest.

Nyungwe Forest is the major water catchment area in Rwanda, supplying 70% of the country with water.

The canopy walkway is a must-see attraction in Nyungwe Forest.

The 200-meter-long trail, 50 meters above the forest cover, is the only one of its kind in East Africa.

The panoramic views of the last remaining Afromontane rainforest are breathtaking, and you can observe various primates and birdlife.

Chimpanzee trekking is the main activity in Nyungwe Forest National Park.

There are two habituated chimpanzee families for tourists to trek in the forest.

Chimpanzees are close relatives to humans, sharing 98% DNA with us.

You can book your permits in advance, and only a group of eight people is allowed to visit one family daily.

Nyungwe Forest National Park also hosts 310 species of birds, and there are various species you will spot.

Some of these include the white-headed wood hoopoe, Ross’s turaco, red-faced woodland warbler, paradise flycatcher, Rockefeller’s sunbird, Rwenzori turaco, mountain masked apalis, collared apalis, purple-breasted sunbird, great blue turaco, red-throated alethe, and gigantic forest hornbill, among others.

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Groups

#1. susa gorilla trek (susa a family).

This is the gorilla group that was researched by Dian Fossey. It derived its name from River Susa which flows in the home range of these gorillas.
