Rihanna’s Anti Tour: Subdued, but Still Ready to Party

rihanna anti tour stage

“My band is ugly as shit,” Rihanna mused during a break between songs at Sunday night’s Anti World Tour stop at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “They know that, though. Luckily they can play some good-ass instruments.”

Rihanna is one of very few people on this planet who could call you ugly and it would somehow come off like a great compliment. Consider how cool you’d have to be for Rihanna to feel comfortable casually teasing you in front of thousands of people: that she is acknowledging you at all is paramount to anything else.

Rihanna’s “don’t give a fuck” persona has been written about extensively in recent years, ever since her somewhat darker 2012 album, Unapologetic , which was followed by a few years during which she was most visible to the public on her Instagram account, where her life seemed an impossibly chill collection of parties and galavanting with friends and vacations. She took quite some time (by her own standards) to release her follow-up, Anti , which represented a pretty significant departure from her previous collections. As we wrote when it came out in January, Anti is a “Sunday-afternoon album,” as opposed to an out-on-a-Friday-night or treadmill album. It’s soulful and hazy and, while there are definitely standouts, there are not the obvious “bangers” that her previous seven albums featured (save for straight-up smash first single “Work,” which has spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard singles chart). It was as though Rihanna was saying, with Anti , “I’ve already conquered the singles game; I want to put out a piece of cohesive art now,” and then went ahead and put out the Rihanna version of that, which has its slightly middling patches, but ultimately sounds—in its rawness and grit—like an Exactly the Album This Artist Wanted to Make album.

So it’s fitting that the corresponding tour for this “new era”—as she referred to it during the show—is one that feels minimalist and stripped down: less Pop Star, and more Mature Artist (Mature Artist Who Still Has a Penchant for Partying, that is). There was little in the way of set design or visual elements. The 28-year-old emerged from a white structure in the center of the arena at the beginning of the night (opening with the ballad “Stay,” off of Unapologetic , setting the tone for the staid-by-Rihanna-standards evening). She wore an oversize white coat—hood on—one of several cloaked, draped outfits she cycled through over the course of the night, all of which looked egregiously comfortable, and which gave her the appearance of being (the most fashionable version of) A Woman on Her Way to a Party in the Middle of a Blizzard.

She eventually made her way across a walkway—while performing “Pose,” an Anti bonus track, and one of the more rollicking songs on the record—vamping and preening. Once she reached the end of the walkway, and decamped for the stage, she remained there for the rest of the night. The aesthetic—the monochromatic leisure-wear clothing, and the sparse stage (two tarps were visible for the entire night, deflated on either side)—definitely evoked Kanye West’s Yeezy Season collections. For the most part, she sprinted through her prior hits, not giving the (spirited) audience much time to live with any of them. During a section in the middle, she performed a sequence of buoyant older jams (“Live Your Life,” “Run This Town,” “All of the Lights,” “Umbrella”) and she joyously danced, skipped, and spun around the stage, singing some, but seeming more like the Platonic Ideal of how one should move their body and bliss out to a Rihanna song—which, of course, makes sense, since she is Rihanna. Watching her be Rihanna is a delight like watching a supermodel strut or an athlete dunk—it’s regarding a triumph.

If Rihanna seemed to rush through some of her songs (the entire set was just under 90 minutes), she definitely, unsurprisingly, luxuriated most in the new Anti songs. Many of them—“Needed Me,” “Consideration”—came alive more in the live setting than they do on the album, perhaps due to Rihanna’s evident passion in selling them. “Work” was a bit of a missed opportunity, sandwiched into the middle of one of the sections and absent the Drake verse, but I would be lying if I said the woman in front of me did not turn around bemused as I wailed and flailed along to it, so it’s hard to say the rendition wasn’t wholly transformative. Her decision to close the show with Anti standout— but mid-tempo—“Kiss It Better” seemed indicative of her intentions for the night.

Trump Has Chernobyl-Level Meltdown Over Harris’s Democratic National Convention Triumph

As much as we all would love to spend a weekend partying with Rihanna in a remote beach house somewhere, she is, more than pretty much any other current celebrity, completely inaccessible, as if the colors she sees are completely different ones from the ones we see. In a strange way, even though music obviously made her famous and she is thriving as much as ever, her album output can sometimes seem beneath her, in the way that Keeping Up with the Kardashians has started to seem beneath Kim Kardashian as she has become more globally prominent. The music, or the reality show, seems increasingly an afterthought in light of the ever-growing personality . The main accomplishment Sunday night, all elements considered, would seem to be delivering Rihanna, the persona and the personality, to an audience of ecstatic fans.

During one of the breaks to talk to the audience, Rihanna criticized her front row for their lack of enthusiasm (“Y’all’s shit is mad expensive. Y’all don’t feel like you’re getting your money’s worth?”) which, again, just made me jealous Rihanna wasn’t lambasting me . Later, saying her good-byes, she reflected, in response to the crowd’s disappointment at the concert’s ending, “I want to stay out here with you guys, too. I ran out of DVDs to watch on the bus. It ain’t shit out there. This right here, this is my shit.” She launched into her next song, and, after gazing at her transfixedly for about a minute as she belted “Love on the Brain” in a loose, mustard-colored ensemble, I turned to my friend. “I want that coat,” I said. He nodded in agreement.

Rihanna Details Massive ‘Anti’ World Tour

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Although Rihanna  hasn’t revealed the details surrounding her impending LP Anti , the singer has already plotted a long world tour in support of her new album. The Anti World Tour kicks off February 26th at San Diego, California’s Viejas Arena and will spend three months circling North America before the first leg closes out May 7th at Oakland’s Oracle Arena. The following month, Rihanna will embark on a two-month trek through Europe.

Travis Scott will serve as Rihanna’s opening act throughout the North American leg, while the Weeknd  and Big Sean  will accompany her on the European tour. Anti World Tour tickets go on sale to American Express card members and Tidal subscribers on November 30th, with a general on-sale date for all shows scheduled for December 3rd.

Anti is the culmination of a long recording process for Rihanna; after releasing four albums in four years between 2009 and 2012, it’s been three years since Unapologetic arrived in November 2012. Rihanna hasn’t been completely dormant: In the past year, she’s released three singles – “FourFiveSeconds,”   “Bitch Better Have My Money,”  and “American Oxygen”  – but it’s unclear whether those tracks will appear on the Kanye West-executive produced LP.

“To me it’s never done until it’s done. Until the final moment,” Rihanna told NME in a September interview. “I have so many songs I love – and they’re so different – that it’s hard to actually put them all on the same album.” The singer also revealed she had worked with Charli XCX on some songs that could potentially make the final tracklist. Recently, Rihanna revealed her Roy Nachum-creared album cover and the album title for her upcoming LP  at a Los Angeles event.

Anti ‘s impending arrival was trumpeted in mysterious Samsung ads  during the American Music Awards; when the album does arrive, it will likely spend a period of exclusivity on both the Tidal streaming service and Samsung mobile devices before public consumption.

Rihanna’s ANTI World Tour Hits Los Angeles

A night before she let Drake get a little twerk action, Rihanna couldn’t contain her excitement on the first of two shows in Los Angeles . “L.A., I been waiting for ya’ll. Ya’ll know that?” she said to a packed house of screaming fans at the Inglewood Forum Tuesday (May 3).

Night one of Rih Rih’s So-Cal tour installment was a 90-minute production of bright lights, stunning dance routines, and a handful of wardrobe changes.

Kicking off with “Stay,” Rihanna emerged from the opposite end of the venue, strutting up a stairway in a white hood, beige bodysuit, and custom Guiseppe Zanotti thigh-high-chap boots. After the open, she hitched a ride to the stage on a transparent rectangular prism performing “Sex With Me” in all it’s seductive glory.

The full setlist was a hodgepodge of past and present with ANTI cuts (including “Consideration” “Work” “Kiss It Better” “Desperado,” and “Love on the Brain”) weaved between older hits (“Man Down,” “Rude Boy,” “Birthday Cake,” “Umbrella,” “Love The Way You Lie Pt. 2,” “We Found Love,” “Where Have You Been”), some of her biggest features (T.I.’s “Live Your Life” Drake’s “Take Care,” Kanye Wests’s “All Of The Lights,”), and buzz singles “Bitch Better Have My Money” and “FourFiveSeconds.”

Despite the confidence oozing from her pores, the show’s energy felt slightly uneven at times. One of the night’s loudest crowd reactions went to a pair of backup dancers voguing in sparkly hooded catsuits while Rihanna changed clothes beneath the stage (her wardrobe was on point, just as you would expect).

No matter the seesaw vibe of the show, Rihanna is the best she’s ever been vocally, and more captivating than ever. Especially when she stripped down layers of clothing and teased the audience wearing only a black thong over a lace jumpsuit. There were other moments where she would simply stop and smile to an eruption of cheers.

The stage setup matched the music, transforming from muted notes for the more somber records, to vibrant colors on the up-tempo songs, and a curious overflow of suds pouring down a white backdrop as she performed “Diamonds.”

Contrasting the sluggish and odd foam moment, Travis Scott, opened the tour with so much energy that he needed to catch his breath after the first few minutes. Towards the end of his set, Scott ran up to the Forum’s balcony section to perform “3500” and picked someone out of the audience to rap the n-word, like he did with a white fan last month.

He also told the crowd to rebel against security by standing on their chairs, and gave a short PSA about smoking: “If you got a motherfuckin’ cigarette, throw that shit out. Tobacco is foul!”

As a whole, the ANTI World Tour felt more like a randomly epic road trip, than a well-planned journey — and that’s not a bad thing. Sometimes it’s the unexpected things in life that make for the best stories.

Review: Rihanna on Tour, Part Preacher, Part Dominatrix, All Human

rihanna anti tour stage

By Jon Caramanica

  • March 28, 2016

There wasn’t much to look at in terms of set design during Rihanna’s Sunday-night concert at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Oversized plastic cocoons throbbed with pulsing air on either side of the stage. About two-thirds into the show, a huge shower curtain dropped from the ceiling; for a while, it displayed multicolored psychedelic swirls, and shortly after, foam came tumbling down it from the top, as if Rihanna had let the world’s largest washing machine overflow.

These didn’t feel like strategic choices so much as a result of needing literally to fill space — vertical, horizontal, intellectual, psychological.

But there was one exceedingly potent and poetic visual gambit early in the night, one that required just as little thought but was endlessly rich. Rihanna began the concert on a platform at the opposite end of the arena from the stage. After one song there, she boarded a clear floating catwalk and soared above the crowd, slithering through erotic numbers like “Woo” and “Sex With Me” while striking one hard pose after the next. She was moving laterally, and also undulating, and also pausing for effect. Songs were playing, she might even have been singing them, but in those minutes, all that mattered was her mastery of space.

She could have done the whole show like this, truly — staring down upon her faithful, bent at various angles, part tent preacher and part dominatrix. Rihanna is exceptional at being famous , and she needs very little in the way of help to fascinate a room.

At this show, though — the first of two sellouts at Barclays Center on her world tour celebrating “Anti” (Roc Nation) , her eighth album, which was released in January — she aimed for more, which she doesn’t always do. The concert was arranged thematically, split into sections that showcased different parts of her catalog — bombastic, anthemic, somewhat Caribbean, very Caribbean — if not of her personality. About two dozen songs were compressed into around 90 minutes, a warp-speed recent-career overview that played something like a workout video: tightly controlled with mild variations designed only to obscure the fact that, really, there are no variations.

That was echoed in the wardrobe, which utilized a restrained, mature palette — beige, ivory, taupe, olive — on garments designed for druids, a look that channeled 2013-era Kanye West and suggested a concert at the hottest club on Tatooine.

Neutrality is not anonymity, though. Rihanna, the 28-year-old pop star, was the most present she’s ever been onstage, and maybe the most confident. (Although in the past she has managed to pull off a supremely confident disengagement. )

She wasn’t particularly animated by the particulars of performing — her dancing was still casual, her lip-syncing not always spot on. But she appeared to be finding joy in singing — when she was doing it, which was only some of the time — a part of pop fame that has not always been her strength. Often, performers will front load their sets with songs that demand the most vocally, but Rihanna waited until the concert’s final leg to push herself: an ecstatic “Diamonds,” a bare-bones “FourFiveSeconds,” a melodramatic “Love on the Brain.” As people began to stream out of their seats to head home, Rihanna aimed to pull them back with her humanity.

This represented, in so much as is possible, Rihanna with her guard down. The rollout of “Anti” was scattershot and messy , and the album lacks a center. But it also includes some of Rihanna’s most thoughtful and invested singing ever. She is doing something extremely rare in pop: trying harder the more famous she’s become.

She surrounded herself with worthy allies here: a gaggle of outstanding dancers, including voguers and bone breakers, and a crack band, initially submerged on four square platforms arranged evenly onstage and eventually raised to sea level. The drums were tough and synthetic, the keyboards tingling. The band alternated between faithfulness to the source material and disruption, excelling on a space-funk version of “Birthday Cake” that was colder and dreamier than the original.

It also delivered an expertly rendered but unfortunate run of dance music, a world Rihanna occasionally visits with a big smile and a pinched nose: a nitrous-injected version of Drake’s “Take Care,” followed by “We Found Love” — on which her vocals were unsteady enough that they were clearly live, something that humanized the song’s assault — followed by “Where Have You Been.”

This, the most energized portion of the night’s show, was also the most disjointed. Each person onstage was operating in his or her independent universe; from a distance, it all suggested an Off Broadway play about an arena show, where each person surrounding the star harbors a provocative inner life but is trapped in an endless performance. In the middle of it all, Rihanna moved a little, but not much — everyone else’s physical scramble for attention only made her reluctance more entrancing.

Rihanna plays Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday and the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday.

Rihanna performs during anti world tour 2016

Rihanna ’s Anti World Tour stopped in Los Angeles this week for a two-night stand (May 3-4) at The Forum. With anticipation at a fever pitch at the second show Wednesday night following opening act Travi$ Scott , Rihanna hit the stage at 9:30 p.m. And for the next 90 minutes, the singer didn’t disappoint as the Rihanna Navy screamed, cheered and sang along throughout the entire evening.

At one point during the show, she asked her fans if they were having a good time: “You all paid for this MF,” she shouted out.  “You better let me know if I’m f—ing up!”

Drake ‘Works’ It With Rihanna at Miami Anti Tour Stop

Here are five top moments from Rihanna’s Los Angeles stopover:

Trending on Billboard

1. Drake ’s surprise appearance to join Rihanna on “Work” brought the house down. Wearing the sexiest outfit of the evening—a black lace fringed jumpsuit through which you could see a sexy black thong—Rihanna already had the Forum rocking to “Rude Boy” when the strains of “Work” began filtering through. And soon after out pops Drake. As Rihanna rubbed and shook her backside next to the rapper, the audience went nuts. “L.A.,” please make some noise for this stunningly beautiful woman,” proclaimed Drake. As Rihanna left the stage for a costume change, the rapper performed “One Dance” and “Jumpman.”

2. Rihanna kicked off the proceedings with a surprise entrance. Everyone in the venue rose when blurry black and white images of a hoodied Rihanna began flashing across a giant video screen onstage. As all eyes focused on the screen, the woman herself entered from the back of The Forum. Shrouded in the same white robe-like hoodie and singing “Stay,” she slowly made her way  to the stage. As she lets the hood drop back to reveal her face, chants of “Rih Rih” resounded throughout the arena. Then she ripped into her hit collaboration with Eminem : “Love the Way You Lie.”

3. Not surprisingly, Rihanna performed a number of tracks from her Anti album, including “Woo,” “Love on the Brain,” “Desperado” and “Kiss It Better.” But in addition to “Rude Boy” and other songs like “Cake,” “Live Your Life” and “Four Five Seconds,” she did reach all the way back to “Umbrella.” And though she only performed one verse and one hook from her breakthrough hit, the audience erupted into one of the evening’s most spirited sing-alongs.

10 Sexiest Lines From Rihanna’s ‘Anti’

4. During most of the show, Rihanna was accompanied by a nimble team of female and male dancers that alternately slinked, twerked and flexed their way through some unbelievable acrobatic moves. Opening the final act — backed only by the band and three backup singers — Rihanna turned in the concert’s most powerful and emotional moments Starting with “Needed Me” and segueing into “Same Ol’ Mistakes” and “Diamonds,” she left no doubt as to why she’s one of music’s most popular and talented artists.

5. Opening act Travi$ Scott did what any strong opening act should do: amp up the crowd for the star attraction. But he took a couple of unconventional routes in doing so. Launching his 40-minute set with “90210” and “A-Team,” he asked the red-shirted security guards stationed at the foot of the stage to move out of the way and let audience members come up front — a wave of whom did just that (with no incidents). “You have to let people come up and rave,” said Scott. “They’re just trying to have fun. These kids aren’t here to hurt anybody.” Later, Scott ran from the stage and jumped into the upper level of a section during one song to take selfies with fans.

The Anti World Tour continues its California run with upcoming stops in San Jose (May 6), Oakland (May 7) and San Diego (May 9).

Exclusive: Rihanna’s Stylist Breaks Down All Her Stunning Anti Tour Looks

One of the Bad Gal’s most singular qualities? With the help of her directional stylist, Mel Ottenberg, she always keeps ’em guessing. True to form, the modern-day bombshell opens nights on her epic, lately mounted Anti world tour wearing a Craig Green coat in stark white canvas atop a bodysuit. It’s an unexpected move, one of the stripe that’s made pop’s foremost style star the subject of so many fashion blogs and Instagram accounts. “It’s the opposite of what I did with her on her last tour,” Ottenberg tells Vogue.com, “which was much more embellished and gold and intricate for the beginning. I just wanted to strip it all away. I felt like I was sort of bored of it.” That opening ensemble is just one of four wholly custom looks.

Ottenberg’s choice to dress his muse in purely bespoke wares for Anti is no accident. As he says: “This isn’t the first time that I’ve done [her tour costumes], and I know that everything’s so specific—movement, dance, and quick changes and durability—that, in my mind, there’s nothing really out there in the world that fits all that and is also fashion that’s going to work.” Ottenberg works closely with the tour’s choreographers and creative director, Willo Perron, talking about the dance moves entailed, and the larger aesthetic concept behind the show, while developing looks. But long before the lights go on to packed stadiums, Ottenberg had whiled away hours researching in the stacks at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Anna Wintour Costume Center. There he set his eyes on images like those of Irving Penn ’s of the ’80s. The resulting looks run the gamut from almost post-apocalyptic sex appeal (a second-skin lace-up bodysuit, courtesy of Adam Selman ) to full-throttle opulence ( Armani Privé ’s glittering getup and chocolate brown cape). We caught up with Ottenberg to talk about all the looks you’ll see when Anti comes to a town near you.

“Craig made this white coat, and I really wanted to start in something with canvas, with no decoration or beading or anything, sort of as a fresh start. To me, it was anti what any pop diva would ever be wearing to open her concert. She’s wearing this really well-designed yet incredible simple bodysuit that Adam Selman made for us, and a pair of thigh-high ruched boots by Giuseppe Zanotti.”

“It’s this nude lace-up jumpsuit with crisscross lacing that goes up and down the body. It really looks pretty naked onstage, but she’s totally covered, and then he made a head-to-toe do-rag that’s really, really amazing. I love it so much. The lace-up bodysuit is one of my favorite things on the tour. It’s really simple, and really strong.”

This Bride Dyed Her Wedding Dress Pink&-And Rewore It to Her Friend’s Nuptials as a Guest

“It’s a fringed, beaded jumpsuit with this huge, really dramatic, sweeping chocolate brown coat. It’s incredible how she can really whip that thing around. It’s really gigantic but also really light. I don’t want to constrain someone’s movement or feelings onstage just for a costume. I like to think you can inspire what the artist is doing through fashion, but you don’t want to weigh them down.”

“For the finale, we did a suit with Y/Project, who I really love. I think [Glenn Martens] is really talented. She’s wearing a leather bodysuit by this amazing designer from L.A. called L.A. Roxx. For that, she’s worn different sunglasses: custom Selima Optique, vintage Dior sunglasses from the ’70s—we’ve been switching it up. I really love ending the show in an oversize brown suit because she can pull that off so flawlessly, and again, that just feels so anti what you’re ever going to expect to see.”

this image is not available

Update, 11/29:  While we still don't know when her 8th studio album,  ANTI , is going to drop, Rihanna has made waiting slightly easier by giving us a small glimpse into the next era of her career—which seems to be way less "Diamonds" and a lot more "Disturbia."

Needless to say, we officially can't wait for #R8.

Original post, 11/23: After teasing new music, gracing us with the epic  "Bitch Better Have My Money" video and announcing her upcoming album, ANTI , Rihanna is officially making her on-stage return. The singer announced her new world tour, ANTI , on Instagram today following a series of short promo videos released with Samsung . This will be Rihanna's first tour since announcing her Diamonds World Tour back in 2012. In the first look at the ANTI world tour, Bad Gal Riri goes for a masculine-inspired look in  a suit and tie. No official concert dates have been announced yet, but tickets go on sale December 3rd–just in time for your holiday wish list.

Rihanna's Mega 2024 Comeback World Tour: Dates, Tickets And More

23 October 2023, 13:30 | Updated: 24 October 2023, 11:26

Rihanna is 'quietly planning' a huge comeback - here's what we know so far

By Abbie Reynolds

The Rihanna drought has been a long one but get out your Umbrella 'ellas because RiRi is reportedly planning a major comeback with a world tour and two new albums! Here's everything we know so far.

Listen to this article

We haven't had a new Rihanna album since 'ANTI' in 2016 but she remerged in the music scene when she dropped her first song in six years ' Lift Me Up ' for Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever.

This year the 'Needed Me' singer's Super Bowl performance became the most-watched halftime show ever. It was her first live performance in more than five years and she took the opportunity to reveal she was pregnant with her's and A$AP Rocky's second child.

As we near the end of 2023 fans are wondering - will 'R9' come this year, or in 2024? Well, despite Rihanna recently giving birth to her second son Riot Rose, it has been reported that she is gearing up for the comeback of a lifetime. RiRi insiders have since shut down the reports, saying 'no tour has been confirmed', but that won't stop the Navy manifesting a tour from their idol.

Even as a mum-of-two the Work doesn't stop, so it wouldn't surprise us if RiRi does announce a tour. Here's everything you need to know about the rumours on RiRi's mega return, including reports of a highly-anticipated world tour.

Rihanna has signed a £32 million deal with Live Nation

Will Rihanna be going on a world tour in 2024?

After reports claimed Rihanna's signed a multi-million pound deal with Live Nation, insiders close to the singer shut down the speculation saying: "No tour has been confirmed for Rihanna.”

It comes after sources claimed that she was planning an international tour in 2024 and 2025.

The deal with the entertainment company Live Nation "was created to facilitate a world tour," an insider told The Mirror .

"Her creative team is quietly at work in Los Angeles putting it all together as she raises her family. She’ll press play on the live show once she’s ready to go back to work,” it was said.

Rihanna welcomed her second son in August 2023

How to get tickets to Rihanna's world tour

In October it was claimed that the star had signed a mega deal with Live Nation. So far, Live Nation have not gone public with any tour dates or planned ticket sales but they will be our first point of call for any updates.

Rihanna and her long-term boyfriend A$AP Rocky welcomed their second son Riot into their lives in August so it might be later into 2024 than we'd like before she returns to stage. A newborn and a tour might even been too much for a powerhouse superstar like RiRi.

As soon as more information on Rihanna's tour and how to get tickets is available, we'll update this page!

When was Rihanna's last world tour?

Rihanna's last tour was The ANTI world tour in 2016 which started in March in Florida, Jacksonville and ended in November in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The 'ANTI' tour was the artist's seventh concert tour and was in support of her eighth studio album ANTI. Only Big Sean accompanied RiRi as a support act on her UK/Europe dates of the tour after The Weekend pulled out last minute. For her North America dates Rihanna had Travis Scott as her special guest.

The tour started just after her song 'Work' with Drake hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and she surprised fans across the world by bringing him onto stage to perform with her.

Rihanna shares sweet footage of her son

After teasing new music for years, Rihanna is currently sitting on an abundance of new tunes the insider continued: "[She] has two albums’ worth of material to release once she’s back.”

Rihanna's fandom pushed a theory a few years ago suggesting Rihanna's comeback could actually be a double album. With news that she has two albums' worth of material this theory could be coming true - now that would be quite the Rihanna revival.

After her Super Bowl performance this year she said she was "excited to actually put new music out" but she didn't have any updates - maybe this excitement could spur the new mum to get back into it sooner rather than later.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are now the parents of two little boys

Since her album hiatus the star has featured on a PARTYNEXTDOOR song 'Believe It', as well as releasing music for the Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever soundtrack with 'Lift Me Up'.

She returned to live performing in May of this year when she announced her second pregnancy at her Super Bowl halftime show. Dressed in an iconic red fit beside her dancers in all white, the 'Work' star flashed her baby bump.

Her Super Bowl performance, which became most watched half time show ever, went viral on TikTok with even Kim Kardashian and Mariah Carey's daughters North West and Monroe Cannon recreating the routine.

Background [ ]

In November 2015, it was announced that Rihanna had signed a $25 million contract with Samsung to not only promote Samsung's Galaxy line of products, but to also sponsor the release of  Anti  and its supporting tour. On November 23, 2015, Rihanna announced she would be embarking on "The Anti World Tour".

Critical Response [ ]

In a review for  The New York Times , Jon Caramanica stated that Rihanna was at her "most confident" and "the most present she's ever been onstage", calling her dancing "casual" and that she "appeared to be finding joy in singing — when she was doing it. [1] "Reviewing the Los Angeles concert, Latifah Muhammad from  VIBE  described the tour as a "randomly epic road trip." [2]

Ed Power from  The Telegraph  gave Dublin concert four stars, writing that the tour "didn't waste time on embellishments and instead delivered full-strength shots of sass and escapism." [3]  The London concert also received four stars from  The Guardian , where Michael Cragg praised the singer's "unshakeable Rihanna-ness; that perfect pop voice, the undeniable presence, that couldn't-give-a-shit attitude." [4]

Review: Rihanna's Anti World Tour Montreal stop is pro-pop

Merchandise promised anti-commercial and anti-social aspects to this night

Although billed as the Anti World Tour, Night One of a pair of Rihanna shows at the Bell Centre did not rage against the conformist pop machine as much as our host had perhaps intended.

In front of a crowd of 14,005 Wednesday evening, the 28-year-old Barbadian singer didn’t necessarily go through the motions, but she was no iconoclast either. The all-white set with trap doors for her, her backing dancers and her band was nothing out of the ordinary as far as arena concert productions go, and her setlist was so full of ubiquitous hits from her most recent album, Anti, and her past releases that it felt more like a pop coronation than a disruption. If the words on her merch were to be taken as gospel, then there were supposed to be anti-commercial and anti-social aspects to this night. Instead, there was conviviality and singalongs. A confident, deliberate return to form following the longest gap between albums of her decade-plus career.

The sleight of hand opening number, Stay, which required a disguised Rihanna to emerge through the audience and take her place on a small stage atop (and that actually enclosed) her crew’s soundboard, appeared to be inspired by Kanye West’s Yeezus tour, and the dancing druids and front-tilted screen on the main stage did nothing to dispel that notion. Her stamp was soon put on proceedings with Woo from Anti, which found her dancing on a moving catwalk from the back of the room to the front.

An uneven selection of songs in the earlygoing was quickly forgotten with Bitch Better Have My Money and its irresistible catchphrase of a hook. Consideration, the opener from 2016’s Anti, cruised along with a jumping drum pattern. A medley comprised of hooks she sang on famous rap hits reiterated her unassailable pop credentials, but only West’s All of the Lights still packed a punch compared her aged T.I. and Jay Z collaborations. Her rap side wasn’t the only time Rihanna bunched songs by subgenre: There were also separate dancehall and EDM sections during the 90-minute set. One could also argue her faithful cover of Tame Impala’s languid epic New Person, Same Old Mistakes was a piece of a larger psychedelic foray with apropos colourful swirls in the background. Her rendition of FourFiveSeconds, the largely acoustic number she did with West and Paul McCartney, was a surprise stripped down number.

The dancehall section received the most attention of the night, if only because it included current hit single Work, which wasn’t any more or less explosive on stage than on the radio. Rude Boy hasn’t lost any of its silly charm, either, and the version of Man Down on this tour was remixed by Montreal producer Shash’u, giving the night an unexpected local angle. The electronic dance numbers were done with illuminated, inflatable cocoons surrounding the stage. A neutered remix of We Found Love sputtered out, allowing Rihanna’s incredible contortionists to show off their inhuman moves. The progression of the stage from sleek and angular to glowing plastic cylinders to a bubble bath was remarkably seamless.

The singer didn’t speak much, only breaking from the gameplan to compliment her crew and point out an adorable infant wearing noise-cancelling headphones near the front of the stage. She even did away with the tired encore ritual by continuing to play till the end, only stopping briefly to give a preemptive goodbye. By the end, the artificial bath suds that started falling behind the group during Diamonds had completely runneth over, signaling that the needs of her fans were met. Not an anti-pop experience by any means, but surely a professional one.

Rihanna Broke Down in Tears in the Middle of Her Concert

But they seem to be happy tears?

Headshot of Megan Friedman

During a tour stop at Dublin's Aviva Stadium, Rihanna seemed to get caught up in the emotions of the crowd. While she was singing "Love The Way You Lie," she couldn't help but get a little teary-eyed.

She posted a message on Instagram to the same effect, saying the crowd helped her get through her feelings that night. "Such an emotional show for me," she wrote. "No matter what I'm on you always snatch me out of it."

Her fans was a little worried, since she also started the concert late. But she seems to have recovered quickly, keeping it cheerful and fun through the rest of her show. Because she's nothing if not a total pro.
