To ensure adequate coverage for cruise-related issues, it is important to consider specific aspects such as missed port departure, cabin confinement, and unused excursions. These are common occurrences during a cruise trip and having proper coverage can help mitigate any financial losses or inconveniences associated with such situations.

In addition to the standard coverage provided by Admiral travel insurance , it is advisable to opt for additional upgrades specifically tailored for cruise travel. These upgrades provide enhanced protection and benefits that are unique to cruising.

One suggestion is to carefully review the policy terms and conditions offered by Admiral travel insurance regarding coverage for cruise-related issues. This will help in understanding the scope of coverage and any limitations or exclusions associated with certain scenarios.

Another suggestion is to consider the length of the cruise trip. Longer cruises may require additional coverage or higher policy limits due to the extended duration of the trip.

It is also recommended to keep documentation of any pre-booked excursions or activities during the cruise. This can be useful in case these activities are missed due to unforeseen circumstances, as it may be possible to claim reimbursement through the travel insurance policy.

Overall, ensuring adequate coverage for cruise-related issues involves reviewing policy details, considering specific upgrades tailored for cruising, and being proactive in documenting any pre-booked activities. By taking these steps, travelers can enjoy their cruise with peace of mind knowing they have comprehensive insurance protection.

Excess waiver

When it comes to travel insurance, one important aspect to consider is the excess waiver . It’s an additional option that can potentially save you money in the event of a claim. But what exactly is an excess waiver and why is it important?

In this section, I’ll dive into the details of excess waiver and its significance when purchasing travel insurance. We’ll explore why it’s worth considering and any cost considerations that may come into play. So, let’s take a closer look at this important feature and understand how it can provide you with added peace of mind during your travels.

Additional option to waive the excess on travel insurance claims

An Extra Alternative to Eliminate the Surplus on Insurance Claims

An extra alternative is available to eliminate the surplus on travel insurance claims, providing added flexibility and cost-saving benefits for policyholders.

  • Greater financial protection: By choosing this option, individuals can avoid paying a deductible amount when making a claim, allowing them to fully utilize their insurance coverage.
  • Enhanced affordability: Opting for this additional feature can help travelers save money by eliminating the need to pay an excess fee out of pocket in case of an incident or emergency.
  • Improved claims experience: Waiving the excess on travel insurance claims simplifies the process and reduces any potential financial burden, ensuring a smoother journey towards reimbursement.

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that this option can be particularly useful for those who frequently travel and are more prone to encountering unforeseen situations that may require filing an insurance claim.

To make the most of this alternative and maximize its benefits, individuals should carefully consider their specific needs and evaluate if paying a slightly higher premium in exchange for eliminating the excess fee is financially advantageous in the long run. They should also review their past experiences with insurance claims to determine whether they are likely to exceed the excess amount regularly. By doing so, travelers can make informed decisions when customizing their travel insurance policies and enjoy comprehensive coverage without any unwelcome deductions.

Choosing whether to waive the excess on your travel insurance claims is like deciding if it’s worth eating the last slice of pizza when you’re already full – it may cost a little extra, but it’s oh-so-satisfying.

Importance and cost considerations

  • Coverage needs: Assess the level of coverage required for your specific travel plans, including medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, personal liability, and baggage protection.
  • Comprehensive benefits: Evaluate the benefits offered by the insurance policy, such as emergency medical cover, 24-hour assistance helpline, and reimbursement for additional expenses due to travel delays or missed connections.
  • Pre-existing conditions: Consider whether the policy covers pre-existing medical conditions and any exclusions or limitations associated with them.
  • Deductibles and premiums: Compare the deductible amounts and premium costs among different policies to find the one that offers a balance between affordability and coverage.
  • Policy exclusions: Review the policy’s list of exclusions to understand what incidents or scenarios may not be covered and if there are any specific conditions under which claims may be denied.

It is important to note that each traveler’s requirements may differ based on factors such as age, destination, activities planned, and personal circumstances. Taking into account these importance and cost considerations can help you make an informed decision when choosing a travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

To ensure you find suitable coverage at an optimal cost:

  • Assess your individual needs and preferred level of protection.
  • Obtain quotes from multiple insurers to compare prices.
  • Consider bundling your travel insurance with other policies (such as home or car insurance) to potentially save on premiums.
  • Opt for a higher deductible if you are comfortable covering larger out-of-pocket expenses in exchange for lower premium costs.
  • Read the policy documents carefully before purchasing to fully understand the terms, conditions, and any optional extras offered.

By evaluating your specific requirements, comparing policies from various providers, and considering these suggestions, you can make a well-informed decision about your travel insurance coverage while balancing importance and cost considerations.

Admiral Travel Insurance Review: What You Need to Know

Admiral offers three levels of Annual and Single Trip travel insurance—Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. All policies include some level of cover for Trip Cancellation , Emergency Medical, Trip Delay/Missed Departure, Legal Assistance, Personal Accident and Personal Belongings. Mid-tier (Gold) and top-tier (Platinum) policies also include Catastrophe cover; top-tier plans include Hijack cover and Cruise cover as well. But there's no cover for financial failure of suppliers like airlines or hotel operators.

As for optional extras, Winter Sports can be added to all tiers of insurance for an additional cost. Gadget and Golf cover are optional add-on features available for the top two tiers for an additional cost —Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. You can't add these features to the lowest tier Admiral plan. Cruise cover is included as standard on Admiral Platinum policies, or available for an extra cost on the lower tiers.

Those going on a cruise can get optional cover for cabin confinement, emergency airlift to hospital, missed port and unused excursions. To learn more about market prices please see our article Average Cost of Cruise Travel Insurance UK .

How to Buy Admiral travel insurance plans can be purchased either via a comparison engine or direct from Admiral . The basic limits are the same, regardless of where you buy your policy. Differences between buying direct and buying from a comparison site mostly relate to excess and price: generally speaking, plans from a comparison site typically cost less (around 20% less, in fact, for Annual, Multi-trip policies according to our pricing analysis) BUT they have a higher excess for the same cover levels. A higher excess means you contribute more towards any claims. Those buying direct are sometimes offered a 10% discount for buying online, so it's good to check the website to see what discounts are offered today.

Are Gadgets (e.g., Mobile Phones) Covered? Gadgets including mobile phones are covered to some extent on all plans through the Valuables section of cover. However, the standard Valuables limit may be too low for you—it's only £200, £300 or £400, depending on which plan you choose. If you travel with multiple gadgets or more expensive gadgets, you might want to consider adding Admiral's Optional Gadget Cover to an Admiral Gold or Admiral Platinum policy. (Optional Gadget Cover is not available as an add-on to the lowest tier of cover, Admiral plans.) You're able to add this to your policy whether you buy direct or from the comparison site.

What is the cost of adding gadget cover to Admiral travel insurance? We checked in November 2023 and were quoted £4.30 for £1,500 of additional cover for a single trip for the loss, theft or damage of gadgets. Prices may vary.

To see a list of other companies that offer a gadget travel insurance add on please see our article, Travel Insurance Companies with Optional Gadget Cover .

Does Admiral Travel Insurance Cover Trips in the UK? Holidays in the UK are covered under Admiral policies, so long as you pre-booked at least 2 consecutive nights of commercially-operated accommodation more than 25 miles from your home.

Pre-Existing Conditions: Admiral may be able to offer cover for some pre-existing medical conditions , for which you'll pay a higher premium. Pre-existing conditions are only covered if they've been declared by you, Admiral has given written acceptance and you've paid an additional premium.

As part of the online quote process you can declare your conditions to see if cover can be offered, and for what added cost. Or you can call Admiral's Medical Screening number (0333 234 9913) to discuss your particular situation.

Over 65s: Now, the latest policy documents don't specify upper age limits. Previously, they said that the age limit for travellers on Admiral's Annual Multi-Trip policies was 75 years or under or 79 years or under for a Single Trip. Cover for Winter Sports was subject to an age limit of 65 years. Now they say 'the cover we can offer you will vary depending on our age limits, underwriting criteria, the cover you need and the details you provide.'

Covid Cover: You're covered for emergency medical treatment and repatriation if you contract Covid-19 abroad; for cancelling your trip if you are diagnosed with Covid-19 within the 14 days prior to your trip departure or the hospitalisation or death of a close relative within the 14 days prior to your trip departure, as a result of Covid-19 (Cover is subject to your policy being active at the time of the event and proof of a positive Covid-19 test.)

Admiral Price Comparison

According to our data research in February 2018, prices of Admiral Travel Insurance were noticeably lower than the average cost of travel insurance in the UK. In fact, even Admiral's top-tier Platinum policies come in below average, as you can see in the following chart of Annual, Multi-trip plans by geography.

chart showing Admiral single-trip travel insurance prices compared to market averages

According to data we gathered, prices of Annual, Multi-trip policies from comparison sites were around £5 to £10 cheaper than policies bought direct from Admiral, depending on geography and type of plan, representing a savings of approximately 20%.

Insurance quotes can vary significantly from day to day and according to your individual details, so please just use the following data for general educational purposes only; your quotes may reflect a large degree of variation.

We also gathered quotes for Admiral plans for a family of four from the Admiral website—they'll pay on average 2X the cost of an individual policy (basically, kids go free). Below you can see how prices change across geographical locations like Europe and America and policy types for a family of four. Plans bought from a comparison site would be expected to cost less.

How much more expensive is travel insurance for a family of 4?

Cost of Add-On Extras

Winter Sports, Cruise, Gadget and Golf cover may be added for an extra cost to some of Admiral's travel insurance policies. We've gathered quotes across geographies and types of policies for a 30-year-old individual to give you an idea of the cost of travel insurance add-ons —these prices reflect policies bought directly from the Admiral website.

Buying Direct vs Using a Comparison Site

Generally speaking, you'll pay less for an Admiral travel insurance policy if you purchase it through a comparison engine ( try ours here ). Of course, there is a trade off. Policies—which are otherwise nearly identical—differ on a few points. First, the excess is higher on the comparison site policies. Second, the upper age limit is lower on policies via a comparison site.

Differences between Direct and Comparison Site Policies

You'll notice that the upper age limit for Winter Sports is the same regardless of where you buy (65 years), as is the maximum trip length on Annual, Multi-trip policies (31 days).

Protect your holiday today. Quick quotes from over 45 insurers.

Buying Admiral Direct from the Admiral Website

Those in their 70s or older may find more success buying direct, due to the higher upper age limits discussed above.

For an extra cost you can add golf cover to plans bought direct, if needed.

Here is a brief recap of some features available on Admiral travel insurance policies. Standard features like Medical and Personal Liability are also included on Admiral policies, limits for which can be found below in the Policy Limits section . For more complete details including inner limits and exclusions, please refer to the policy documents .

Types of Admiral Travel Insurance Policies

Admiral offers three tiers of travel insurance—Admiral, Admiral Gold and Admiral Platinum. All are available for Single Trips or as Annual, Multi-Trip policies. Admiral Single Trip travel insurance covers trips up to 365 days abroad. Admiral Annual Multi-Trip policies cover any number of trips a policy year, up to 31 days each. You may be able to extend the maximum trip duration for an extra charge, subject to the underwriter's approval. The following limits and plan details are consistent across policies purchased from the Admiral website and a comparison site.

Admiral Travel Insurance

The "Admiral" plan is their entry-level travel insurance offering. Emergency Medical expenses are covered up to £10 million and you get up to £1,000 of cover per insured person for Travel Delays, Trip Cancellation/Curtailment and Personal Belongings.

You can add Winter Sports or Cruise cover to Admiral's cheapest plans, but Golf and Gadget cover are not offered as add ons.

Admiral Gold Travel Insurance

As Admirals's mid-tier offering, Gold policies include higher limits and the addition of Catastrophe cover (e.g., volcanic ash, earthquake, storm, flood, tsunami, etc.). Cruise, Winter Sports, Golf and Gadget cover may be added for a cost.

Admiral Platinum Travel Insurance

Admiral Platinum is the top-tier travel insurance plan with the highest cover limits per person. If the Platinum premium fits in your budget, you'll get the highest coverage levels with this plan. In addition to features of the Gold plans, Cruise cover is included as standard on Platinum policies.

How does Admiral Travel Insurance Compare to Competitors?

To better understand the value of Admiral travel insurance you need to look at it in the context of other available options. We compared it to other plans in the market so you can see which may be more suitable for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line Travel Insurance

Direct Line travel insurance plans include cover for End Supplier Failure and Natural Disasters, plus cover for the replacement cost of used points or miles in case of Cancellation/Curtailment for a trip bought with air miles or another rewards structure. While prices are a bit higher than average, according to our analysis, you are getting these extra cover features. One surprising extra is Baggage—you'll need to pay extra to cover your personal belongings as they're not included as standard.

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for End Supplier Failure or Natural Disasters, or if you book trips with miles, then Direct Line might provide more comprehensive travel insurance for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs AXA Travel Insurance

AXA Travel Insurance Review

AXA travel insurance offers good value for money, with all plans including Insolvency, Baggage, Cancellation/Delay/Curtailment and Catastrophe. Those who ski or snowboard will get longer Winter Sports cover with AXA (over 30 days, depending on the plan).

Bottom Line: If you really want cover for End Supplier Failure and Baggage included as standard, or you spend more than 17 on Winter Sports trips per year, then AXA might be a more comprehensive travel insurance option for you.

Admiral Travel Insurance vs Sainsbury's Travel Insurance

Sainsbury's Bank

Sainsbury's travel insurance offers solid travel cover at decent prices, especially when purchased through a comparison site. All plans include Baggage, Cancellation and Emergency Medical, but you also get Scheduled Airline Failure, Delayed Departure and Trip Abandonment. Extended Gadget cover can be added to all plans, to cover mobile phones, iPads, etc. Trip lengths are longer than average (notably up to 92 days on top-tier plans bought direct).

Bottom Line: Those needing cover for longer trips might find more suitable travel insurance from Sainsbury's Bank.

The experts say:

Admiral's Platinum travel insurance package offers plenty of protection for holidaymakers and frequent flyers. With a Which? ranking of 65 out of all 71 providers, you can be sure that you're getting a good deal. The policy score by Which? is also quite high at 59%, so you know that you're getting quality coverage. When it comes to Covid Cover, the rating is low, but it does offer medical expenses cover up to £2,000,000 and baggage cover up to £2,500. Cancellation cover is also generous at £5,000 and the excess payble on medical claims is only £75. To top it off, Admiral has been given a Fairer Finance rating of 4 stars - making this a great choice for your next trip!

What Admiral customers are saying right now:

  • ✅Easy online booking  🤩Great prices 😉10% discount with multi-car insurance 💰Compensation offered for raised complaints 🎉 Quick response time for insurance quotes
  • 🤬 Terrible customer service with no response to queries and complaints
  • 😡 Long wait times on hold when trying to contact them
  • 💔 Unfair offers on insurance claims, such as offering £2800 under the value of a car

Admiral customer reviews summary

Admiral's travel insurance has been receiving mixed reviews from customers, with some praising the affordability of their policies and others citing long wait times and unhelpful customer service. It appears that when it comes to making a claim, Admiral may not be the most reliable option. Customers have reported being put on hold for hours, receiving inadequate compensation, and having additional costs added to their claims. Overall, Admiral travel insurance may not be the best choice for those looking for a hassle-free experience. Rating: 4/10

Easy to set up

Took out my insurance through Comparethemarket. Straightforward and hassle free!😁

Canceled today.

Canceled today.. I've had admiral gold on my car, and I recently passed my driving exam. My premium went from around £2,000 on my provisional license, to just over £4,000 with my Full Manual License. (and I was hoping that it would lower a little) I've found another insurer for my full license, around £1900, and yea. Their support team seamed understanding, and helped me cancel my insurance. (Thanks if you are reading this)

Hello Leordean Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Firstly, congratulations from everyone here on passing your test! It's extremely unfortunate that this has increased your premium significantly, and you've needed to take insurance elsewhere for the time being, but thank you so much for the time you were insured with ourselves. We sincerely hope we can offer you a more competitive quote in the future! Thanks Jayne

Don't bother

Don't bother Absolutely terrible insurance company. Referred to Auxillis who took 9 MONTHS to tell us that they couldn't claim on third party insurance. Called Admiral only to be put through to 3 different departments and then told that I could get a call back because they were busy. Eventually persuaded the person I wanted to speak to them. Now am waiting for ADMIRAL CLAIMS to call back. When I claimed it took me THREE HOURS and was cut off six times before someone picked up the phone. May be cheap but not worth the hassle

Good morning, Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback, we apologise for the experience that you’ve had when making a claim. If you need further assistance please contact us with your full name and policy number to the email below and we will get a member of the Claims team to contact you. Thanks Sam [email protected]

Procedure in effecting new policy

I obtained a quotation on line. When I tried to effect the insurance there was a query and after trying to deal with this via "chat" on line I had to phone New Business. This I did and the phone was answered promptly but setting up the policy did take the best part of an hour.

Date of experience : 21 August 2024

Great Prices

Very helpful customer agent who was able to answer all my questions. The cost was very competitive and in fact was £1100 cheaper than my previous insurers renewal price

Date of experience : 22 August 2024

Poor website

I was previously a customer with More than and Admiral had taken over their business. I agreed to their terms and endeavoured to register and pay. Unsuccessfully. After several on line attempts I contacted customer services who proceeded to explain that despite being prompted to register on line this was not possible. Either use technology as an aid or don't bother. Endless time wasted.

Do not use Admiral

There is the reason Admiral have more complaints made against them than any other insurer. Do not let Admiral contractors do any work in your home. They cause further damage to your property and have completely bodged the reinstatement of my kitchen. The work is so poor I cannot shut the fridge door. Been dragging on for over 18 months.

Hello Laura, I am so sorry to hear of your experience and the delays with Admiral when making a claim on your home insurance. I understand that this can be a difficult and stressful situation and I would like to apologise for the trouble and upset caused. Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. Windscreen replacement is a joke

Windscreen replacement is a joke. Tied to autoglass through Admiral; car is not drivable due to a shattered windscreen, earliest replacement at home - 9 day wait. Or go to the nearest Autowindscreen - 45 mins away. When I said I can’t drive the car legally I was told to get it towed. Several companies locally within minutes of my house that I can’t use! Useless service if you work or require a car to live day to day! Complained and had no help, just stuck with a substandard solution!

I applied online for home insurance. When it came to the payment part I imputed my card details. It then asked me to call by telephone which I did. The advisor then preceeded to ask me questions I had already answered online. I believe this was a ploy to add additional extras on my home insurance. The advisor asked me for my credit card details which I did. Checking my online banking today you have taken my one off home ins payment twice. I believe if I didnt have online banking I wouldnt of been aware of this. I am very disappointed.

It’s easy for the younger generation to do online but if my daughter hadn’t done it with me I’d not have been able to carry it out.

I took out insurance on a new car online. To get he documents I had to register my account but could not get the password accepted. I called customer services and persuaded them to send the documents attached to an email. On viewing the documents I saw that your online program had chosen the wrong model. A further call produced the correct model but not the increased premium on the documents sent by email . I am still unable to register my account. No more online insurance for me!

Initial quote great but then…..

Initial quote great. Went to pay when we got our vehicle and wanted to start the insurance and this customer service rep went through everything again. Our quote was good for 2 weeks and yet he insisted we go through it all. Then was extremely pushy about adding other vehicles and house insurance. We had previously done this and it was more expensive so declined. He was aggressively persistent to the point we nearly told them to stick the policy. So 2 stars because Harry we first spoke to was great but it was ridiculous spending half an hour just trying to then pay a few days later.

Hi Debbie, thank you for choosing Admiral. We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. We understand your disappointment with the lengthy process and the upselling of multiproduct. It's important to us that our customers feel comfortable during every interaction, it would not be our intentions to leave you feeling this way. We appreciate you sharing your experience, we are always looking at ways to improve and take all feedback on board. Thank you, Stacey.

The chat bit of this site is useless absolutely useless.

The site wouldn’t let you go to the payment to pay, it would then try and say come back later of send you to a chat line that’s useless absolutely pathetic if I am honest. I did this and spent 45 mins only to be disconnected and have to start again. Extremely frustrating and poor service. No explanation why this happened 2 days at this trying to sort this out horrendous. In the end I had to phone them, this took another 45 mins to get this sorted.

Hi Martin, thank you for choosing Admiral. We understand your frustration with the recent payment issues you experienced on our website, we apologise for any inconvenience caused. We strive to provide a seamless and efficient online experience for our customers, we regret that this fell short of your expectations. We appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback, we are always looking for ways to improve our services. We hope that you will give us another chance to serve you in the future and provide you with the personalised and engaging experience you deserve. Thank you, Stacey.

Failed to send car insurance renewal....twice

I have been a customer of Admiral for two years, having returned to them. I noticed that my renewal for 2 cars had not arrived so four days beforehand, I contacted them. I spent an hour on the phone with an utterly useless and incompetent agent (Chinglam Chiin) who assured me I would receive my renewal within 2 days. It never arrived! I registered a complaint and received a stock e-mail 2 days later advising me it will take them 4 weeks to reply! It would have been better to read the complaint and send me the renewal documents, but clearly this doesn't fit with their (hopeless) process! Frankly, I couldn't be bothered to waste at least another hour of my life contacting them, especially as I had moved house a day before renewal which would surely have totally confused them, so I insured elsewhere. I never received the renewal terms.

  • The average travel insurance premium this week is $297.42, down about 0.38% compared to last week.
  • For travel in the United States, the average premium is $175 to $350.
  • Travel insurance protects against delayed baggage, trip cancellation, and more.

The average cost of travel insurance fluctuates throughout the year, based on demand and whether or not school's in session. Also keep in mind that where you're traveling and how many people are taking the trip will affect your exact premium.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans can cover both domestic and international travel. It could protect against something as familiar as delayed baggage (experts estimate 85% of lost luggage is returned to its owner within 48 hours) or as complicated as trip cancellation.

The benefits and limitations of travel insurance vary based on the company and plan. Above all else, this insurance coverage offers peace of mind.

Some credit cards offer a limited amount of travel insurance annually. If you need clarification on what your credit card offers, contact your provider to verify. These plans are great for cancellations and interruptions but may not cover more costly losses associated with unexpected medical expenses or emergency evacuations.

Individual travel insurance plans include this and much more. Travel insurance protects travelers from the unexpected when away from home.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Destination

Some countries are naturally more expensive travel destinations due to higher flight and lodging costs, which could increase travel insurance costs. Travel insurance will generally cost 5% to 10% of your total trip price, according to SquareMouth travel insurance .

Here's how the prices stack up:

Source: SquareMouth

How Far in Advance to Purchase Travel Insurance

According to an AAA travel survey , 88% of travelers say that reimbursement after a trip cancellation is the most valuable benefit of trip insurance.

According to data gathered by SquareMouth in the last six months, travelers tend to purchase trip cancellation travel insurance 53 days before their trip. Meanwhile, travelers without trip cancellation insurance will buy a policy approximately 16 days before their trip. Regardless of when you buy, cancellation protection can kick in to protect you against the unexpected.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Age

A traveler's age is a significant factor in determining the cost of travel insurance. The older a traveler is, the higher travel insurance premiums are. For instance, a senior traveler may need more insurance for health-related emergencies than a millennial.

When calculating your travel insurance premium, travel insurance providers consider the likelihood of a medical emergency.

Travel Insurance Rate Tips

Travel insurance rates through most providers fall between 4% and 8% of the total trip cost. Like the cost of flights, cruises, etc., rates may vary substantially based on the season, your original location, your destination, and other factors. This week, the average cost of a policy was close to $300.

To save money on travel insurance, tailor your policy to your specific needs and avoid unnecessary extras. You should also shop around to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Opting for an annual plan if you're a frequent traveler, checking existing coverages from other insurance policies or credit card benefits, and choosing a policy with a higher deductible can significantly lower your premiums. Always read the fine print to understand your coverage fully, ensuring you don't pay for redundant or irrelevant features.

To find affordable travel insurance, consider using online comparison websites like SquareMouth or InsureMyTrip to see rates from various providers. Other ways to save include purchasing directly from insurance companies, exploring package deals from travel agencies or airlines, utilizing included coverage from credit card benefits, and checking for discounts through membership organizations such as AAA or AARP.

The 5 Best Annual Travel Insurance Plans

Based on our team’s extensive research on annual, multi-trip travel insurance plans, we’ve named the following as our top picks.

  • Seven Corners: Trip Protection Annual Multi-Trip
  • Trawick International : Safe Travels Annual Basic
  • International Medical Group (IMG): Patriot Multi-Trip Travel Medical
  • Allianz Travel Insurance: AllTrips Premier
  • AIG Travel Guard: Annual Plan

Seven Corners Travel Insurance

Seven Corners Travel Insurance

Why We Picked Seven Corners

Seven Corners provides annual coverage through its Trip Protection Annual Multi-Trip plan. The plan includes COVID-19 protection, trip cancellation insurance and pre-existing condition coverage as standard, and allows for unlimited trips lasting 40 days or less throughout your policy term. You can also customize your annual trip cancellation limit, with up to $10,000 in total benefits.

Pros and Cons

Trawick international.

Trawick International

Why We Picked Trawick

If you’re looking for basic coverage at a low cost, Trawick International offers its Safe Travels Annual Basic plan for a flat rate of $155 per person. Coverage extends up to 30 days for each trip taken more than 100 miles from home during your coverage period and can apply to both U.S.-based and international trips. While Trawick features lower coverage limits than other providers on our list, it offers 100% trip cancellation coverage at no additional cost.

International Medical Group

International Medical Group

Why We Picked IMG

International Medical Group (IMG) provides the highest medical coverage maximum of all the providers on our list through its Patriot Multi-Trip Travel Medical plan. The policy offers protection of up to $1 million after paying a $250 deductible for medical benefits, dental, emergency medical evacuation and more. IMG also provides medical and emergency medical evacuation coverage if you have a sudden and unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing condition. Note that you can upgrade your plan to allow for 45 days of coverage per trip versus 30 days.

Allianz Global Assistance

Allianz Global Assistance

Why We Picked Allianz

The Allianz AllTrips Premier plan provides annual travel insurance coverage for your entire household through one plan — regardless of whether you travel separately or together. The plan includes trip cancellation and interruption benefits as standard coverage, but you can customize the coverage limits at an additional cost. The AllTrips Premier plan also provides rental car coverage, which most providers in this review lack.

AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard

Why We Picked AIG

AIG Travel Guard (AIG) offers one annual travel protection policy, called the Annual Plan. It provides non-flight accidental death and dismemberment coverage up to $50,000, which is not typically included in other yearly policy offerings based on our review. AIG also offers up to $100,000 specifically for security evacuations. Note that there is no age limit to purchasing a policy — the only requirements include holding U.S. residency and buying the policy no later than 24 hours before departure.

What Is Annual Travel Insurance?

Annual travel insurance — also known as multi-trip travel insurance — can protect multiple trips over a year. For frequent travelers planning several vacations in a year, an annual travel insurance plan can offer a more economical option than purchasing multiple single-trip policies . With annual travel insurance, you should only pay one premium for a year’s worth of coverage.

While each annual travel insurance plan varies by provider, you may find that per-trip or yearly coverage limits apply rather than item-specific limits. In addition, some coverages found with single-trip policies are not typically included in an annual travel insurance plan, such as trip cancellation insurance, baggage loss and rental car coverage. Providers may also not offer the option to add cancel for any reason (CFAR) coverage with an annual plan. Annual travel insurance usually focuses more on medical protection versus a broader range of coverages, based on our assessment.

Compare Annual Travel Insurance Plans

You can refer to the table below for a side-by-side comparison of our team’s picks for the best annual travel insurance policies.

* Our team gathered quotes from each provider’s website for the above-listed plans based on a 30-year-old sample traveler.

How To Choose an Annual Travel Insurance Plan

There are several steps you can take to help make the process of choosing an annual travel insurance plan easier while ensuring you pick the right plan for your needs as a traveler.

First, it is best practice to research providers before choosing an annual travel insurance plan. Not all travel insurance providers offer this type of policy, and for the ones that do, we recommend you consider industry and customer reputation when making a decision. Note the coverage limits, medical benefits and any additional add-ons each company offers. While the providers listed in this article are our top picks for annual coverage, every traveler’s needs and best-suited plan will vary.

If you have your travel itinerary for the year mapped out and know what you’re looking for in terms of coverage, consider an annual plan that aligns with your needs and concerns. For example, if you have a pre-existing medical condition , you may consider a provider that provides a pre-existing condition waiver and high medical coverage limits. If you’re more concerned about cancellation coverage, you may choose a plan that offers this type of protection, which not all companies include in their annual plans.

How Does Annual Travel Insurance Work?

Annual travel insurance works by covering a traveler during multiple trips over the course of a year. There’s usually no limit to the number of trips you can take during this time. However, companies do include limits on how long each trip can last under coverage. This limit varies by provider, but a standard threshold is a maximum of 90 days based on our review.

Some annual travel insurance benefits work on a per-trip or per-year basis. For example, a yearly plan may have a baggage loss limit that resets every trip, while it sets separate limits for trip interruption benefits for an entire year of travel. Plans are typically non-renewable, so once your coverage is up, you would have to buy a new plan to cover another year of travel.

After purchasing a plan, coverage begins on the effective date, which your provider should list within your policy documents. Coverage ends on your policy’s expiration date, which your provider should also detail within your policy. How long coverage extends per trip, and the associated coverage levels, will depend on your provider.

We recommend you read your policy carefully to ensure you fully understand the applicable limits of your annual travel insurance plan.

Benefits of Annual Travel Insurance

The benefits of an annual travel insurance plan include low costs compared to purchasing individual plans, convenience and consistent coverage across all of your trips. Learn more in the sections below.

Cost-Efficiency

Annual travel insurance plans are often more cost-efficient than several single-trip policies, according to our quote collection process. If you’re taking more than one or two trips within a year and looking for coverage on a budget, you may consider an annual travel insurance policy.

Convenience

Purchasing one travel insurance policy to cover a year’s worth of multiple trips is easier than buying several single-trip policies. You only need to worry about one set of terms, conditions, policy limits and more instead of juggling multiple plans.

Consistent Coverage

An annual travel insurance policy can ensure that coverage stays consistent throughout your travels. You can take trips of varying lengths to different destinations, but your coverage and benefits should remain the same within your term limits.

Drawbacks of Annual Travel Insurance

As with most types of insurance, there are both pros and cons to annual travel plans. These drawbacks include limited benefits and a variety of exclusions, which we’ll detail below.

Variety of Exclusions

Many providers do not include trip cancellation coverage if you purchase a basic annual policy. While some providers allow you to add these benefits to annual policies for an extra cost, coverage is not typically included as standard as with a single-trip policy.

Offers Lower Limits

Annual travel insurance limits are often lower than with a single-trip policy. If you’re looking to insure a costly trip or need a plan with high medical coverage limits, you may want to consider a single-trip plan instead.

Annual Travel Insurance vs. Single Trip Travel Insurance

You will likely notice differences and similarities when comparing annual travel insurance versus single-trip travel insurance policies. For one, both yearly and single-trip policies usually bundle travel medical, emergency medical evacuation, baggage loss, baggage delay and travel delay coverage within a standard policy . Single-trip policies, however, often include trip cancellation benefits, which many annual policies only offer as an add-on.

Both annual travel insurance and single-trip policies limit the length of trips covered. For yearly plans, limits can range from 30 to 90 days for a single trip, and you’ll need to head back to your home base in between trips. For a single-trip policy, plans often limit trip length to no longer than 180 days.

Cost Differences Between Annual and Single-Trip Travel Insurance

Annual multi-trip policies can be more cost-effective than single-trip coverage for frequent travelers, based on our review. Typically, single-trip policies may benefit travelers taking one or two trips in a year. Annual travel insurance is usually more suited for those who travel often, taking upwards of three trips or more within a year’s time.

There are times when a single-trip plan may better suit your needs compared to an annual policy. For example, if you are taking high-end, luxury trips with a high overall cost, you may benefit more from single-trip policies for each trip with high cancellation and interruption limits.

Who Needs Annual Travel Insurance?

Various types of travelers could benefit from an annual coverage plan. A multi-trip travel insurance plan is worth considering if you travel frequently for business or pleasure and do not need coverages such as trip cancellation insurance. Annual insurance may also suit travelers who like to take last-minute trips or longer vacations, as having an annual travel insurance plan in place can offer more convenience.

Annual plans are also worth considering for lower-cost trips where the primary concern is covering a potential medical emergency. As mentioned, annual plans do not usually offer trip cancellation coverage as a standard inclusion. However, they typically include medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation coverages — ideal for those looking to protect their health versus trip expenses during their travels.

If you’re taking expensive or high-value international trips throughout the year, you may prefer a single-trip policy for the trip cancellation benefits that come with each plan. Or, if you’ve booked a variety of non-refundable expenses, such as hotel or tour reservations, a single-trip plan with cancellation coverage may also better suit your needs.

What Does Annual Travel Insurance Cover?

Annual travel insurance policies offer a variety of coverages to offer financial protection if  unexpected events occur. From medical emergencies to travel inconveniences, yearly plans can provide comprehensive coverage for peace of mind.

Exclusions and Limitations of Annual Travel Policies

Annual travel insurance policies usually have the same exclusions as single-trip policies. Typically, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered. Still, some providers offer a waiver to extend coverage for medical bills or claims related to your recent medical history. Standard annual policies don’t cover adventure sports, but this coverage is often available as an add-on. Moreover, “foreseeable” events, such as natural disasters or named storms that began before you purchased your policy, are also excluded from annual travel coverage.

The coverage provided through an annual travel insurance policy also has limitations. For example, travel medical expenses and emergency medical evacuations have capped monetary limits. If the medical bills incurred during your travels cost more than the coverage you’ve purchased through your policy, you will have to cover the excess out-of-pocket. In addition, trip interruption benefits will cover a percentage of your non-refundable travel expenses, with the amount depending on your plan and provider.

According to Angela Borden, Product Marketing Specialist at Seven Corners, “One of the most common reasons for a denied claim is because a traveler misunderstood the details of their plan. If you have any questions about what’s covered, contact your provider. They’ll be able to address any concerns so that you can travel more confidently.”

We recommend you read through your annual travel policy documents thoroughly to understand the exclusions and limitations associated with your coverage.

How To Buy Annual Travel Insurance

Purchasing an annual travel insurance policy is usually a straightforward process, as most providers allow you to get a quote and buy a policy entirely online. However, there are some specifics to pay attention to when purchasing a policy.

Coverage Start and End Dates Vary

It is best practice to pay attention to when your coverage starts and ends with your chosen policy. Most providers specify the start date as when you begin your travels. Plans will likely end a year after your start date or when your benefits are exhausted, whichever comes first. Coverage for each trip cannot exceed the specified maximum length outlined in your policy, so take note of the stipulations around coverage start and end dates.

Understand the Claims Process

It can help to understand how to file a claim with your provider before an emergency occurs during your travels. Many companies allow you to file a claim online, but you can often speak with a claims representative during specified hours if you’d prefer to talk to someone over the phone. You’ll likely have to provide documentation for your claims, so we recommend you keep all receipts and other necessary documents during your travels.

Look for Add-On Options

Some annual travel insurance providers offer optional add-on coverages for an additional cost. You may find that you can customize your coverage limits as well. For example, Allianz and Seven Corners allow you to choose your trip cancellation coverage limits, but increasing the amount can result in an additional cost. Other companies, such as IMG, provide adventure sports riders for those looking to participate in activities such as paragliding, skydiving, windsurfing and more.

Is Annual Travel Insurance Worth It?

Annual travel insurance plans can be worth it for certain travelers . If you travel frequently for business or pleasure and prefer consistent, cost-effective insurance protection, an annual multi-trip policy may be the right choice for you over a single-trip policy. However, examining your unique coverage needs can help you better gauge whether you need a yearly policy.

“When you’ve made a financial investment in your trip or need to protect your health when you travel, travel insurance is 100% worth it. Travel insurance can reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable trip expenses if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason. This means you get money back in your pocket if the unexpected happens. Travel insurance can also reimburse you if your belongings are lost, stolen, or damaged and you need to replace them during your trip.” Angela Borden, Product Marketing Specialist at Seven Corners

We encourage you to gather multiple annual travel insurance quotes from various providers, comparing the costs and coverage limits on each policy. This can help you choose the coverage that best fits your needs.

The S&P 500 (SPX), or Standard & Poor's 500, is a notable stock market index that measures the performance of 500 large companies listed on U.S. stock exchanges. The index was introduced in 1957 and is now one of the most widely followed equity indexes. It is often considered a benchmark for U.S. market performance.

The S&P 500 is a market-capitalization-weighted index, meaning that larger companies account for a bigger portion of the index. It tracks around 80% of total U.S. market capitalization.

The index is updated in real time during market hours, reflecting price changes in its constituent companies as they happen. The well-known index isn’t only a tool for investors and analysts. It also serves as a benchmark for multiple investment products, including mutual funds , exchange-traded funds, options and futures.

"The S&P 500 has become the most widely used benchmark over the past 50 years due to its ability to serve as the best indicator for U.S. markets," said Derek Horstmeyer, finance professor at George Mason University School of Business. "It has surpassed the Dow Jones Industrial Average in popularity due to its more cohesive and extensive construction."

What companies are in the S&P 500?

Companies in the S&P 500 hail from all 11 Global Industry Classification Standard sectors, making it a comprehensive representation of the U.S. economy.

The selection criteria for the S&P 500 index provides a comprehensive overview of the U.S. stock market.

  • All constituent companies must be U.S.-based. Stocks listed on eligible U.S. exchanges, as well as real estate investment trusts, can make the cut. However, closed-end funds, ETFs, American depositary receipts and other specific types of securities are ineligible for inclusion.
  • A company must have an unadjusted market capitalization of at least $14.5 billion, and its float-adjusted market cap, meaning the portion of shares available for public trading, must meet at least 50% of this threshold.
  • Financial viability is another essential criterion; companies must exhibit positive earnings for the most recent quarter as well as the sum of the past four quarters.
  • Liquidity is also a key factor; the ratio of the annual dollar value traded to float-adjusted market capitalization must be at least 0.75, meaning a substantial portion of the company's publicly available shares are actively traded on the market. This ratio ensures liquidity and that the stock can be easily bought or sold without causing a significant impact on its price.
  • The stock needs to have an investable weight factor of at least 0.10.
  • Lastly, the stock must have traded at least 250,000 shares in the six months leading up to the evaluation date, confirming its liquidity and accessibility to investors.

The index is rebalanced quarterly — in March, June, September and December — to ensure it continues to reflect the U.S. equity market accurately.

S&P 500 index history

The history of the S&P 500 index dates back to 1957 when it was introduced by the financial services company Standard & Poor's. But backtested data for the index now goes back as far as Jan. 3, 1928.

The S&P 500 has been modified and expanded over the years. But its core function remains the same. The index provides investors and analysts with a comprehensive overview of the overall U.S. equity market.

The index has weathered various economic cycles, market crashes and bear markets. During the dot-com bubble, the index fell by 10.14%, 13.04% and 23.37% in 2000, 2001 and 2002, respectively. During the Great Recession, the index plunged by 39.23% in 2008.

Despite these drawdowns, the S&P 500's robust historical performance is often used as a benchmark against which other investments are measured.

The S&P 500's constituent companies have also changed to reflect the shifting landscape of the U.S. economy, from a manufacturing-heavy list in the earlier years to a more diversified group today that includes technology, health care and financials as its largest sectors.

Some of the world's largest and most successful companies, such as Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG) and Amazon (AMZN), lead the index, making it a key reference point for investors globally.

S&P 500 index return history

The following section provides the S&P 500's historical annual total returns over the past decade.

Total returns include not only price appreciation but also reinvested dividends . In contrast, price returns account for only the change in the index's price, excluding dividends.

Focusing on total returns provides a more comprehensive picture of the S&P 500's historical performance in terms of compound growth.

Investing in the S&P 500

Investing in the S&P 500 is a straightforward process thanks to various financial products that track its performance. Different asset managers offer index-linked products that mirror the S&P 500, making it easy for investors to gain exposure to this benchmark index.

S&P 500 index funds

One popular option is investing in mutual funds that aim to replicate the index's performance. These funds pool money from multiple investors to buy the stocks in the S&P 500, essentially mimicking the index's composition and weightings. A popular example is the Vanguard 500 Index Fund Admiral Shares (VFIAX).

S&P 500 ETFs

ETFs are another commonly used instrument for investing in the S&P 500.

S&P 500 ETFs are similar to mutual funds but are traded on stock exchanges throughout the day like individual stocks. While these investment vehicles also track the S&P 500, they usually have lower fees than mutual funds. That makes them a cost-effective way to invest in the index. A popular example is the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY).

For those interested in derivatives, options and futures contracts on the S&P 500 are also available. Options give investors the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price before a specific expiration date. Futures obligate the investor to buy or sell the index at a predetermined price at a specified time in the future.

Options and futures can be used for hedging risks or speculation but come with additional risks and complexity.

Whether you’re looking for long-term exposure to the U.S. stock market or short-term trading strategies, there are multiple ways to invest in the S&P 500. Each investment vehicle has its own set of characteristics, fees and risk exposures.

S&P 500 futures

S&P 500 futures are among the most traded futures on the U.S. markets. This type of future is a derivative contract that provides an investor with a price based on an expected future value of the index.

These futures were first introduced by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1982. All S&P futures are products of the CME and trade electronically.

ADMIRAL SITE ONE TO TREASURE

Admiral can a justly proud of their site. Easy to use, straightforward questions and any were missed very helpful guiding applicant back. Not being a young msn, though having a clean driving record to present, you can imagine my relief when Admiral Insurance revealed its full price with many of the benefits I required at a price I considered reasonable. I was even more pleased when within a few days I had all my printed detail in my post. Well done Admiral - Admirable.I

Great company, even insure modified cars!

Been insured with admiral multiple times over the years, I've a modified car and there's not many insurers that will insure modified cars but admiral do. It's not too much trouble for them. They're great. I would recommend them to anyone.

Customer service was very good but

Customer service was very good. However the reason for my call was that ADMIRAL took 2 payments for the same amount on tte same day for the same insurance. It will take 3-10 days for the duplicate transaction taken to be refunded. Luckily I’m not short of money however if I needed this money it wd be a different outcome.

While Saga stitched us up...Admiral sorted things out.

The representative didn't stop until he had found several ways of saving us money. The renewal on my wife's car insurance from Saga was outrageous, rising over one year from £775 to £1,800. Your representative provided us with the details to make incredible savings on both our cars and our home insurance. Let's hope when it's renewal time I will still be as enthusiastic about Admiral. Doesn't usually happen that way.

Peace of mind…

This policy gave us the peace of mind that we had complete cover for all our needs and at a good price. As a respected & well known brand, it's reassuring to have Admiral provide our cover.

Easy to navigate

Easy to navigate, get an insurance quote, or amend and purchase. The add-ons made it easy for me to check like-for-like quotes. Great savings on my change of vehicle quote. Instant links to paperwork.

Fred was very very helpful and when I had to sort out something he arranged a time he would phone me back to check everything then helped me make my payment following procedure. I received all my paperwork this morning he was thorough.

Easy to set up

Easy to set up, straightforward, cheapest car insurance I could find! Remains to be seen if this stays true throughout the insured period

Booked online

Booked online, fill in form, pay money, Job done. Only complaint, motor insurance in general is far too expensive

I'm retired now,and God willing would like to travel a bit in the next 12 months.I always get a quote for single trips. I thought I'd get a quote for an annual insurance, was pleasantly surprised how much it cost

Multi policy insurance

Multi policy insurance, sorted out last November. My house insurance has just been added as previously arranged. Done without any problems.

Would’ve given 5 stars but after completing my insurance on line and paying I was told I still had to phone and had to go through all what I had just done again, apart from that I got a good price

Great service over the phone

Spoke to Dillon on the phone as I was having trouble setting up car insurance through the website. He couldn’t have been more helpful with talking me through everything and getting it all set up for me.

Disgraceful company

Disgraceful company. I have comprehensive insurance policy for my car with them. When thiefs broke into my car in May this year smashing three windows. I called authorised dealership got a quote for cost of replacing windows. Called the ADMIRAL and were told by stuff that windows are exempt of policies cover in case breaking in or vandalism. Which is nonsense .Had filed complaint with the company and never heard any result. Going take them to court now

Excellent quote

I had looked into changing my vehicle insurance after a massive hike in my insurance last year and this year of over 40%. Admiral came back very well priced and much cheaper than the previous company on the comparison site. I had a very good experience with Admiral insurance over a number of years with a previous employer. I decided to go to Admiral direct and was made to feel like a valued customer. The details were checked and I found the cover was better than previous company for about 50% less than my previous companies quote. Admiral insurance is definitely worth trying.

Payment taken twice

Policy didn’t go through when first did it online so had to go through the chat to get everything sorted which took about 90 mins in total and then the payment has come out twice. Once from the original transaction online and again from the web chat payment I had to make.

Easy to use and get insurance quotes…

Easy to use and get insurance quotes where everything is listed and shows you what you can decide on adding to your policy. The experience is great.

SPLENDID SERVICE

The quote was competitive. It was fairly easy to fill application on Admiral website. I also contacted by phone and the lady was very helpful. I received paper document as requested.
