Tortooga is a location in the Pirates of the Wasteland area of the Wasteland .

It is the first Action World after the player leaves Ventureland , and is the gateway to the Pirates of the Wasteland and the path to Captain Hook .

Its name is named after Tortuga, a major location in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise and a real-life Island in Haiti. Its name is the Spanish word for a tortoise.

Location and Structure [ ]

Tortooga is a small harbor town, situated on the coast of a large island with several mountains in the background. The area is divided into two, with a series of docks encompassing the actual harbor, plus the town itself. When Mickey visits the location the first time, it is most likely sunrise as the sun can be seen rising, and when Mickey visits the next level , it is clearly daytime. When he returns, it is still sunrise even though it is nighttime in the level after that . Furthermore, to make matters stranger, the tide rises and falls very rapidly, causing the docks to thin constantly, which is not at all consistent with the time.

The docks are a bright orange color, albeit with many sections of them being inert. The two sets of docks are disconnected, but both share a very similar shape. The docks to the west contain a large cabin with an interior, the Projector Screen coming from Ventureland , an inclined bridge leading to an inert dock, a separate bridge leading to a lower dock, and a bridge to the town. During the player's second visit, this area is also the location for one of Animatronic Daisy 's legs. The rocky cliffs around here, as well as the opposite side of the harbor, have a few thinnable walls which reveal alcoves; strangely, one of them behind the cabin will cause a giant boulder to fall into the thinner, although this has no known effect on gameplay.

The dock on the east side of the harbor is very similar; it has a large platform that contains a small building with a twisted chimney, a projector screen coming from the Jungle, and a long, steeper bridge leading up to the other entrance of the town. This dock is the location of Beluga Billy's bag . Both of the docks are connected to the south by a series of boats; the ones nearest the docks are overturned and will sink, while the middle two are still upright.

The town itself is heavily reminiscent of Caribbean architecture. The buildings are made of purplish or brown bricks, with the still painted-in sections being white. Furthermore, each of the visible windows emit a pinkish glow. The roofs of each building are made of red or burgundy shingles, but none of them contain a chimney except for the Jail. The groundwork of the area is split into two vertical sections, with the top being a gateway towards the level’s exits and the bottom being a hub for many of the quests that take place in Tortooga.

The bottom contains a set of five wooden "doors", four of which can be thinned out. The leftmost one leads to cellar, two of them contain various items, and the third to the left contains Gremlin Marc . The cellar itself is constructed of purple stone, but a bent, metal gate blocks access to the basement. Once it is opened, the basement itself is a rectangle shape with four pillars, all of which can be spun. If all pillars are raised to the top concurrently, an alcove containing Beluga Billy's valuables will reveal itself from the northern wall.

In front of the doors is a large well, which can only be opened by Cutpurse Tycho . In front of the well are two lanterns. At the bottom of the well is a small room which contains a gear; spinning the gear will raise a few platforms in the central harbor, revealing a chest with a Pin . Another set of these platforms will be raised when Mickey paints in all three of the lanterns .

The left side of the area contains the Tortooga Jail , clearly marked by a swinging sign with handcuffs on it. The roof can be accessed from the upper floor, and underneath its thinnable chimney is a special Key. The door to the jail is initially sealed, with an orange barrier holding the door in place. When this is thinned out, the door will collapse forward, which will crush Mickey if he doesn’t get out of the way. The upstairs room of the jail contains an abandoned desk with a chair, as well as two boards containing pairs of handcuffs. Two candles dimly light the mostly quiet, unnerving staircase down to the cells, supported by creaking metal background noises. There are three cells total, each unlocked by a separate key. Each cell is occupied: Ruffian Branderson , Cutpurse Tycho, and Scallywag Gabe inhabit the cells from right to left. Above each cell is a window which allows some light to leak in, but these can’t be seen from the outside.

At the east end of the town is a ramp which leads to the upper platform; however, it can be thinned out, leading to a lower stone area next to a spinning wheel, very similar to the one in Ventureland. One of the jail keys can also be found here. Mickey will need to paint in the nubs on the wheel to get back up.

The upper floor is longer than the bottom, and is in front of a large building containing a tower in the center. This tower contains the third jail key, as well as the third lantern. Its west wing is also where Beluga Billy will stay during Mickey's second visit. To the left of the building is the Jail roof and a large door which leads to Pirate Voyage ; it can only be opened by Gentleman Starkey or Beluga Billy. The east end of the floor contains a bridge which leads to the Jungle projector screen .

Prior History [ ]

A long time ago, presumably before the Thinner Disaster , there was an old ride that was built around the harbor. All that is left of it currently are scattered platforms, two of which contain chests.

It can be assumed that members of Hook's Crew would have either lived here or visited often, although most probably lived on Skull Island .

Not long before Mickey's arrival in Ventureland, Smee and the remaining human pirates fled from Skull Island, passing through Tortooga and through the projector to Ventureland with the help of Beluga Billy. The only ones left behind were Billy, Sherman, and Starkey, the latter of which fled to the Jungle.

Events in Epic Mickey [ ]

Tortooga is visited twice, with the Jungle being in between both visits.

1st Visit [ ]

Mickey and Gus will arrive on the southwest part of the map, and shortly after their arrival, they will meet Sherman . Sherman is baffled by their reason for chasing Animatronic Captain Hook , but nonetheless recommends they seek out Starkey in the Jungle. Sherman leaves through the way that Mickey and Gus came, leaving them alone until they find Beluga Billy nearby. Billy will agree to restore the Jungle projector, but under the condition that Mickey helps find his lost bag. Mickey travels across the harbor to a building, where he will find the bag. However, Billy will open it and reveal that it has been filled with rocks. Billy then points Mickey towards the nearby Jail, but not before giving him a Watch Sketch which he will need later.

Inside the Jail, Mickey will meet the three prisoners, one of which knows where Billy's bag is. Mickey must then retrieve at least one jail key to free the pirate:

  • One can be found in the chimney above the jail.
  • One can be found in the central tower of the biggest building.
  • One can be found on a platform underneath the ramp at the west end of the town.

Once Mickey has freed the criminal, he will open up a gate that previously prevented the cellar from being entered; the cellar itself can be entered through the leftmost wooden door, right next to the jail. Once in the cellar, Mickey will need to find a way to raise all four of the pillars to the top concurrently. This can be done by quickly running in a circle and spinning the gears, but it is easier done using the Watch Sketch. The watch sketch will slow down time and allow Mickey to easily hit the gears and raise them. Once the pillars are raised, an alcove will appear, which contains Billy's belongings.

Once Mickey returns to Beluga Billy, Billy will open up the Jungle projector, allowing Mickey to leave. However, the player can still do more quests in the area to get some collectibles.

The two other pirates in the jail, Gabe and Tycho, each have respective quests that can be done once they are freed from the cell. Gabe wants Mickey to paint in three lanterns scattered around Tortooga, while Tycho wants him to lower the well . Lowering the well is automatic once Mickey stands on it, and at the bottom is a gear, which once spun, will reveal a chest. Gabe's quest is a bit longer but just as easy, as Mickey must find the lanterns and paint them in:

  • One is to the right of the western dock leading into the town, near the jail.
  • Another is opposite the first, to the left of the eastern dock.
  • The third one is hanging from the tower in the central building.

Once the lanterns are painted in, another series of platforms will raise, revealing another Pin.

2nd Visit [ ]

Upon Mickey's return to Tortooga, things may be very similar or completely different, which is dependent on how Mickey dealt with the enemies in the Jungle . If Mickey were to ignore or only partially clear out the enemies, Tortooga will be overrun by Beetleworx and some Spatters . If Mickey did clear out all the enemies, then there will be no enemies in Tortooga, and Gentleman Starkey will appear.

There’s not a lot to do this time, but the player should definitely cross the harbor to the area with the Ventureland projector, and walk around the cabin. They will find a blue chest which contains Animatronic Daisy's right leg. This will save the player a fee of 1,000 E-Tickets if they have to buy the part later.

The player should make their way up towards the Pirate Voyage door at the top of town, where either Starkey or Beluga Billy will be waiting. Starkey will reward the player with a special pin and give Mickey the title of "honorary pirate" before opening the door, but Beluga Billy will merely open the door. Jump through the projector to progress to Pirate Voyage.
