Mitchell wins Honda Classic for first PGA Tour win

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Keith Mitchell 's first and until now only win as a professional was three years ago on something called the G Pro Tour.

As is the case with mini-tour life, hardly anybody was watching, and hardly anybody noticed. He earned $5,600.

Those days are long gone. After 97 tries on the PGA Tour, the Web.com Tour and even the Latinoamerica Tour, Mitchell is finally a winner -- and he had to outslug two of the game's best players for that long-awaited victory. A birdie on the par-5 18th on Sunday capped Mitchell's win at The Honda Classic, where he held off Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler .

"It was awesome,'' Mitchell said. "I wish that I could come up with a better word than that, but just having a chance to come down the stretch against Rickie Fowler and Brooks -- those guys are the best in the world, and they've been out here proving themselves. And I'm just pleased that I could prove myself against guys like that.''

Mitchell birdied four of his final seven holes, including a 15-footer on the last one, for a 3-under 67 and a 9-under 271 total. Koepka (66) and Fowler (67) made big charges as well on a wild and windy day at PGA National yet settled for a tie for second at 8 under, one shot behind Mitchell.

Fowler gave Mitchell a warm embrace when they crossed paths after the final putt.

"Awesome guy,'' Fowler said. "Obviously, a good enough player to win.''

Koepka and Fowler both birdied the 18th. Fowler actually birdied three of his final four holes, including a 45-footer on the 17th.

But Mitchell didn't waver in the wind.

He was on the upslope of a fairway bunker about 205 yards from the pin for his second shot at the par-5 18th. All he could do from there was hit a pop-up, leaving him with a wedge in for his third.

That checked up about 15 feet below the hole, giving him a putt to win. He made it, pumped his fist and waited for the final group of Wyndham Clark and Vijay Singh to finish about five minutes later.

"Everybody dreams about having that putt on the 18th hole to win a tournament,'' Mitchell said. "And I had it today.''

Jack Nicklaus, who helped design the Champion Course at PGA National, congratulated Mitchell in a tweet:

Big congrats @K_m_Mitchell & @TheHondaClassic ! What a great event! So many in hunt whole time. Had 8-10 players thru back 9 who could win! Lot of good players- @BKoepka , @RickieFowler , @RyanPalmerPGA , @VijaySinghGolf -played fantastic! Then Keith had terrific 18th. Very exciting! pic.twitter.com/H2wSN2dKUk — Jack Nicklaus (@jacknicklaus) March 4, 2019

Ryan Palmer (63) and Lucas Glover (66) tied for fourth at 7 under. For a while, it looked as if Palmer might steal the tournament.

Palmer was tied for 48th after the opening round, tied for 51st after 36 holes and tied for 39th when the final round began. But he started with four straight birdies on the way to going out in 29 -- the first player to do that in a final round at the Honda. He rolled in a 25-footer from just off the green for birdie at the par-4 16th, then stuck his tee shot to 6 feet and made birdie at the par-3 17th.

When he finished at 2:32 p.m., he was two shots back, and the final group was on the fifth hole.

"I've got an outside chance, for sure," Palmer said when he was done.

About two hours later, he was in the outright lead. Not long after that, he was in a six-way tie atop the leaderboard. His chance lasted until 5:07 p.m., when Koepka tapped in for birdie on the last hole for the clubhouse lead at 8 under.

Koepka was good. Fowler was good. Mitchell was just one swing better.

"It was good for the fans,'' said Koepka, the Palm Beach County native and two-time defending U.S. Open champion. "They got what they wanted: a good tournament, two of the bigger names coming down the stretch and having a chance to win. That's what this golf course will do.''

Singh, the 56-year-old who was bidding to become the oldest winner of a PGA Tour event ( Sam Snead was 52 when he won the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open) was right there until the end. Singh, who hasn't won on this tour since 2008, settled for sixth after a final-round 70.

Clark, the third-round leader, was two shots clear of everybody when he made an uphill putt from just right of the green on the par-4 4th, with that birdie making him 9 under. But he made bogeys on four of his next eight holes, falling off the pace.

Mitchell is expected to climb into the top 70 of the world rankings. He was No. 162 entering the Honda and had never been above No. 130.

That's just one of many things that'll change now.

His biggest check as a pro was for $400,400 last year, when he finished third at the Byron Nelson . This check is more than triple that, at $1,224,000. He's going to the Masters. He's exempt for two more seasons. He climbed into the top 20 in the season's money list and FedEx Cup Points rankings.

And perhaps the biggest prize is this: Mitchell will never again have to wonder if he can win.

"Having status for a couple more years, putting myself in a really good position for the Tour Championship, getting to play in the four majors or some of them, I guess ... I don't even know what it gets me,'' Mitchell said. "It's awesome.''

Cameron Tringale took a quintuple-bogey 8 on the par-3 17th after hitting his tee ball into the water and trying twice unsuccessfully to knock the ball out of the water before retreating back toward the tee for a drop. By the time he was finished, two groups -- including Koepka's -- were waiting on the tee to play.

Defending champion Justin Thomas shot 71 to tie for 30th.

WATCH: Keith Mitchell dunks eagle from 151 yards to take Valspar lead

Keith Mitchell celebrates with his caddie after holing out for eagle at the 18th hole on Saturday.

For much of the third round of the 2024 Valspar Championship on Saturday at Innisbrook, it looked as if three, or five, or even more players could share the lead heading into Sunday. But then PGA Tour veteran Keith Mitchell closed with a bang that shut the door on that storyline.

With one hole left to play late on Saturday evening, Mitchell was tied for the lead at eight under with three other players: Seamus Power , Mackenzie Hughes and Peter Malnati .

For Mitchell, all that was left to navigate was the tricky 417-yard, par-4 18th hole at the Copperhead Course, with its tight fairway protected on both sides by bunkers, and the green similarly defended up ahead.

A par would mean going to sleep sharing the lead. A birdie would mean owning the 54-hole lead all on his own. Mitchell did one better.

After expertly lacing a wood off the tee 266 yards down the fairway, the 32-year-old had 151 left to the pin. He pulled out a wedge, then sent his ball sailing in the air and watched as it landed a foot from the flag and bounced directly into the bottom of the cup.

Actually, Mitchell didn’t watch it. As his ball flew toward the green, he lowered his head and rubbed his eye as if something had flown into it after his swing. When someone told him the good news, his face registered a brief moment of shock before he started to celebrate with his caddie.

Not only did the dramatic hole-out count for an eagle-2, it gave Mitchell a two-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round and a fantastic opportunity to collect the second PGA Tour win of his career.

Mitchell’s only Tour victory to this point came at the 2019 Honda Classic. He has two top-10 finishes so far this year after earning five top 10s last year.

Who is Keith Mitchell? Bio for the 2024 Valspar Championship leader

keith mitchell tour wins

Keith Mitchell is the leader of the 2024 Valspar Championship and carries a two-shot lead into the final round at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course near Tampa, Fla. After winning once in his career already, Keith Mitchell could have another huge breakthrough.

You may know Keith Mitchell as the winner of the 2019 Honda Classic at PGA National.

Mitchell is 32 years old, and he is in the field at Valspar Championship because he is a top-70 finisher on the PGA Tour FedEx Cup last season.

For Mitchell, his journey to the PGA Tour is a remarkable story.

Mitchell was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. He played college golf at the University of Georgia before making his way into the world of professional golf.

Mitchell is hitting his prime

Keith Mitchell has won at every level, including as an amateur and after he turned pro in 2014.

Mitchell earned his first PGA Tour win in March 2019 at the Honda Classic. He has had other close calls to win, including at Pebble Beach, but he is yet to hoist that second trophy.

Entering this week, Mitchell was ranked 62nd in FedEx Cup points and ranked 72nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.

In his personal life, Mitchell is married to his wife, Claire.

What a win at the Valspar Championship means

With a win today, Mitchell would earn the benefits of being a PGA Tour winner , including a five-year PGA Tour exemption. He is already exempt into all four majors, including the US Open for 10 years and the other three for five years. And, according to the 2024 Valspar Championship payout , he would win $1.512 million to top it all off.

Peter Malnati Wins Valspar Championship And Claims First PGA Tour Title Since November 2015

Malnati bagged his first PGA Tour title in nine years after a four-under-par final round of 67 gave him a two shot victory at the Valspar Championship

Peter Malnati fought back tears after celebrating his first win in almost a decade as he won the Valspar Championship.

Malnati's victory, after a closing 67 for a -12 total, saw the golfer wipe away tears as he recorded just his second PGA Tour win after Cameron Young bogeyed the last to finish runner-up for a seventh time.

Nine years after his first win, dad-of-two Malnati reflected: "I told myself I was going to do my best on every shot. I was so nervous coming down the stretch. You wonder if you are ever going to do it again. It has got harder with the level of talent and guys coming out aged 20 years old who are so good.

"So to have this moment it feels so amazing. It was so cool. My family believes in me. My caddie has been loyal and I am so thankful. This is my dream job and it is amazing but it is hard and this feels so good."

Malnati thrived as overnight leader Keith Mitchell collapsed badly with a 77 and Mackenzie Hughes was unable to hold on to the lead.

YOUNG OFF TO A FLIER WITH SPECTACULAR OPENING APPROACH

Cameron Young is searching for his first win on the PGA Tour and shots like this will boost his chances after hitting the flag on the first to tee up a birdie.

TERRIBLE OPENING TEE SHOT FOR LEADER KEITH MITCHELL

Mitchell looks like he might have blown the tournament wide open on the first with a poor hooked tee shot into trouble on the left. He is now sweating on a good lie because it is a par 5 and he might be able to recover. Reports his ball may have ended in a car park!

MITCHELL'S OPENING DRIVE ENDS UP IN CAR PARK

Drama here at the first where Mitchell's hooked opening tee shot has ended up in a car park and he is taking a free drop. It is a par 5 so he might be able to scramble a par or better but it is a stressful start for the overnight leader who has been forced to chip out almost sideways with his second.

Keith Mitchell takes relief from his opening drive

MITCHELL ESCAPES THE FIRST WITH A PAR

After all that drama, Mitchell has escaped at the first with a par after firing a iron from 171 yards on to the green, where he has two putted. Not quite like the famous 'Car Park Champion' Seve Ballesteros at the 1979 Open who made birdie from a car park at Lytham on the 16th en-route to victory.

UNCONVINCING MITCHELL SENDS ANOTHER WAYWARD DRIVE

Mitchell needs to get to grips with his tee shots and fast. On the second he took his three wood but still managed to pull it left into the rough. He escaped the first with a par but might not be so lucky this time as he is again forced to chip out.

ROBBY SHELTON HOLES STRONG CONTENDER FOR SHOT OF THE DAY

What a fairway wood from Robby Shelton at the 14th which he has only gone and holed from 258 yards for a two on the par 5. Incredible albatross. That gets Shelton to -4 in total and -1 for his round.

ALBATROSS FOR @ROBBY_SHELTON! Are you kidding?! 🤯 pic.twitter.com/UzNOQQHkqo March 24, 2024

NERVY MITCHELL DROPS A SHOT ON THE SECOND

Mitchell has dropped a shot and slipped back to -9. He is still infront but paid the price for missing a second successive fairway off the tee which forced him to only chip out. However the leader has finally found the fairway off the third at the 437-yard par 4.

MITCHELL FINDS FAIRWAY AT THE PAR 4 THIRD

Mitchell is looking to get back on track at the third after finding the fairway with a 225-yard tee shot before a 203-yard shot to the front of the green. It gives him an outside chance of making a birdie but he has to settle for a par after Chandler Phillips moved level with him on -9.

WHAT A ROUND CARL YUAN IS HAVING

After chipping in for eagle at the par 5 fifth, Yuan has holed out from off the green for a birdie at the par 3 eighth to get to -8.

MITCHELL APPEARS TO BE SETTLE DOWN AFTER SUCCESSIVE PARS

Mitchell remains at -9 after pars on the third and fourth as he appears to be getting to grips with his final round following a very rocky start but he has competition from Chandler Phillips and Mackenzie Hughes who are both level with him.

XANDER SCHAUFFELE PUTTS OUT FOR FINAL ROUND 65

Xander Schauffele was blown away last Sunday by Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour but he has finished well this week with a closing 65 for a -6 round to get to -8 following a birdie on the last which has left him tied fourth at the moment. This is a tough course and the American must now hope his clubhouse total is enough.

MITCHELL MISSES HIS THIRD FAIRWAY LEFT IN SIX HOLES

Overnight leader Keith Mitchell definitely needs to tweak his swing here as he is consistently missing the fairway on the left side. He has done it again on the 446-yard par 4 sixth and drops another shot as he is forced to hack out en-route to a bogey.

Keith Mitchell in the rough again

SCHAUFFELE IN CLUBHOUSE AND IN WITH A CHANCE

Schauffele, who has finished with a superb final round 65 after going -6 in his last eight holes, is in the clubhouse on -8 and is definitely going to hang around in case of a play-off. He could even yet end up top on his own as Mackenzie Hughes is currently the only player ahead of him. Schauffele just told the press: "I had a nice finish. I'm staying on site so I'm going to cruise back home and hang around."

MITCHELL STILL LOOKING UNCONVINCING AS HUGHES SHINES

Keith Mitchell lost his two-shot lead early on today after some loose driving and I can't see him clawing himself back into contention on this evidence. He has just left a wedge from 92 yards 32 feet short of the pin and had to settle for a par while MacKenzie Hughes has poured in a 36-feet birdie putt at the eighth to get to -10.

YUAN KEEPS UP PRESSURE AT TOP WITH THIRD CHIP IN OF HIS ROUND

Chinese pro Carl Yuan is at -9 and having an incredible round to remember after chipping in for a third time. Astonishing.

Three hole-outs!!!@CarlYuanGolf can't miss 🔥 https://t.co/Auw1lyGy3w pic.twitter.com/QXoLsN2EpV March 24, 2024

HUGHES GETS PLUGGED LIE IN SAND OFF TEE AT NINTH

Hughes has looked composed and a good bet as the frontman on -10 but he got a plugged lie off the tee on the ninth and hasn't even managed to advance his ball back on to the fairway with his second at the par 4. He wedges up close but misses his par putt and drops back to -9.

MITCHELL NOW +4 FOR HIS FINAL ROUND AFTER LATEST BOGEY

Keith Mitchell teed off with a two-shot lead but has reached the turn +4 over today after dropping back to -6 following a string of poor drives and unconvincing shots. Can't see him winning unless he gets a spark asap.

FINE BOUNCE BACK BIRDIE FROM HUGHES ON 10

After dropping a shot on the ninth when he drove into the sand, Hughes has responded with a fine birdie on the par 4 10th with a big 45-foot putt.

CAMERON YOUNG WILL HAVE A SHORT BIRDIE PUTT TO GO JOINT TOP

Impressive play from Young on the 12th who has put a wedge to six feet on the par four 12th. He is -9 and has a chance to join Mackenzie Hughes and Peter Malnati at the top of the leaderboard. Young is yet to win on the PGA Tour but he should have another chance today after making birdie to go to -10.

Looking for his first TOUR win 👀Cameron Young gets a share of the lead @ValsparChamp. pic.twitter.com/T8WlWM7L8P March 24, 2024

HUGHES HAS ANOTHER TOUGH BUNKER SHOT ON THE 12TH

After dropping a shot earlier following a plugged bunker lie, Hughes has another tough shot from a downhill lie in the sand ahead at the back of the 12th after his approach from 182 yards. It left him little chance to keep the ball on the green and he has dropped a shot.

WE HAVE OUR LATEST NEW LEADER PETER MALNATI

The lead continues to ebb and flow at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort in Florida where Peter Malnati is now -11 on his own after his third successive birdie at the 12th despite not liking his approach or putt.

Hated it, should have loved it 😅 pic.twitter.com/gPFiYyFgpt March 24, 2024

CAMERON YOUNG IS DESPERATE FOR HIS MAIDEN PGA TOUR WIN AND THIS IS A GREAT CHANCE

Young, has had six runner-up finishes in his career on the PGA Tour so far, including the 2023 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the 2022 Open Championship, but he could finally be about to land his first title. He has just moved level with Malnati after a birdie on the par five 14th and then hit the par 3 15th with a fine shot of 179 yards before tapping in for par to stay -4 today and -11 in total with three holes left going into the Snake Pit.

Cameron Young chases down his maiden win at the Valspar Championship

FINAL PAIRING WELL OUT OF IT

Today's final round is coming to a thrilling climax but I imagine the last pair of Seamus Power and Keith Mitchell will just want to get off the course by now. They teed off with dreams of victory but Power is +5 for today and overnight leader Mitchell is +8.

YOUNG ENTERS THE INFAMOUS 'SNAKE PIT'

Young is looking composed and has a great chance here. He is level with Malnati but can put a lot of pressure on his rival as he is in the group ahead. Young has teed off on the 16th and cut a drive which just ended in the rough. He has about 156 yards to go and is able to gouge an impressive shot to the green en-route to a par while Malnati in the group behind hit the par 3 15th and made his par too.

YOUNG FIRES IN A BRILLIANT TEE SHOT TO 17TH

Young has hit a superb tee shot into the par 3 17th from 204 yards to 17 feet. He has a chance to put a lot of pressure on Malnati in the group behind who has put his second through the 16th green into the thick fringe where he has been fortunate to get a free drop as Young makes par and so does Malnati.

YOUNG IN TROUBLE OFF THE 18TH TEE AS MALNATI HITS 17TH GREEN

Young has been hitting it so well today to get to -4  and -11 in total but his last drive on the 18th is a shocker after he pulled it left into the rough. So it is advantage Malnati who has put his tee shot on the 17th from 199 yards to six foot.

YOUNG FINDS 18TH GREEN AS MALNATI GRABS LEAD

Young has found the 18th green from the rough and may need to hole out from 51-feet after Malnati birdied the 17th to get to -12. Young's effort comes up short and he three-putts the last leaving Malnati with a two shot lead coming up the last.

MALNATI POISED FOR VICTORY AS YOUNG SETTLES FOR SECOND AGAIN

Malnati is walking up the last with a two-shot lead after hitting the 18th green in regulation. He drove into the sand but played up on to the green after Young bogeyed the last to walk off facing his seventh runner-up finish.

MOLNATI PARS THE LAST TO SEAL VICTORY

Peter Molnati has tapped in for a closing 67 and a -12 total as the golfer wiped away tears for just his second PGA Tour win.

Keith Mitchell gets his first PGA Tour win, taking Honda

keith mitchell tour wins

  • Copy Link copied

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Keith Mitchell’s first and until now only win as a professional was three years ago, on something called the G Pro Tour.

As is the case with minitour life, hardly anybody was watching and hardly anybody noticed. He earned $5,600.

Those days are long gone. After 97 tries on the PGA Tour, the Web.com Tour and even the Latinoamerica Tour, Mitchell is finally a winner — and had to outslug two of the game’s best players for that long-awaited victory. A birdie on the par-5 18th on Sunday capped Mitchell’s win at The Honda Classic, where he held off Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler.

“It was awesome,” Mitchell said. “I wish that I could come up with a better word than that, but just having a chance to come down the stretch against Rickie Fowler and Brooks, those guys are the best in the world and they’ve been out here proving themselves. And I’m just pleased that I could prove myself against guys like that.”

Mitchell birdied four of his final seven holes, including a 15-footer on the last for a 3-under 67 and a 9-under 271 total. Koepka (66) and Fowler (67) made big charges as well on a wild and windy day at PGA National, yet settled for a tie for second at 8 under, one shot behind Mitchell.

Fowler gave Mitchell a warm embrace when they crossed paths after the final putt.

“Awesome guy,” Fowler said. “Obviously, a good enough player to win.”

Koepka and Fowler both birdied the 18th. Fowler actually birdied three of his final four holes, including a 45-footer on the 17th.

But Mitchell didn’t waver in the wind.

“Everybody dreams about having that putt on the 18th hole to win a tournament,” Mitchell said. “And I had it today.”

Ryan Palmer (63) and Lucas Glover (66) tied for fourth at 7 under. And for a while, it looked like Palmer might steal the tournament.

Palmer was tied for 48th after the opening round, tied for 51st after 36 holes and tied for 39th when the final round began. But he started with four straight birdies on the way to going out in 29 — the first player to ever do that in a final round at the Honda. He rolled in a 25-footer from just off the green for birdie at the par-4 16th, then stuck his tee shot to 6 feet and made birdie at the par-3 17th.

When he finished at 2:32 p.m., he was two shots back and the final group was on the fifth hole.

“I’ve got an outside chance, for sure,” Palmer said when he was done.

About two hours later, he was in the outright lead. Not long after that, he was in a six-way tie atop the leaderboard. And his chance lasted until 5:07 p.m., when Koepka tapped in for birdie on the last and took the clubhouse lead at 8 under.

Koepka was good. Fowler was good.

Mitchell was just one swing better.

“It was good for the fans,” said Koepka, the Palm Beach County native and two-time defending U.S. Open champion. “They got what they wanted, a good tournament, two of the bigger names coming down the stretch and having a chance to win. That’s what this golf course will do.”

Singh, the 56-year-old who was bidding to become the oldest winner of a PGA Tour event ever — Sam Snead was 52 when he won the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open — was right there until the end. Singh, who hasn’t won on this tour since 2008, settled for outright sixth after a 70.

Clark, the third-round leader, was two shots clear of everybody when he made an uphill putt from just right of the green on the par-4 4th, that birdie making him 9 under. But he made bogeys on four of his next eight holes, falling off the pace.

Mitchell is expected to climb into the top 70 of the world ranking. He was No. 162 entering the Honda, and had never been above No. 130.

That’s just one of many things that’ll change now.

His biggest check as a pro was for $400,400 last year when he finished third at the Byron Nelson. This check is more than triple that — $1,224,000. He’s going to the Masters. He’s exempt for two more seasons. He climbed into the top 20 in the season’s money list and FedEx Cup Points rankings.

And perhaps the biggest prize is this: Mitchell will never again have to wonder if he can win.

“Having status for a couple more years, putting myself in a really good position for the Tour Championship, getting to play in the four majors or some of them I guess ... I don’t even know what it gets me,” Mitchell said. “It’s awesome.”

DIVOTS: Cameron Tringale took a quintuple-bogey 8 on the par-3 17th, after hitting his tee ball into the water, then trying twice to unsuccessfully knock the ball out of the water, before retreating back toward the tee for a drop. By the time he was done, two groups —including Koepka’s— were waiting on the tee to play. ... Defending champion Justin Thomas shot 71 to tie for 30th.

2024 Texas Children's Houston Open odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

W ith the Florida Swing wrapped up, the PGA Tour heads to Texas for the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open . This is the 4th year Memorial Park will host the event, which is headlined by world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler .

Below, we look at the 2024 Texas Children's Houston Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Having won his last 2 starts, Scheffler will look to make it 3 wins in a row this week in Houston. He's the odds-on favorite to win at +275, by far the shortest odds of any player in the field. Wyndham Clark has the 2nd-best odds at +1200, followed by Will Zalatoris (+1800), Sabith Theegala (+2200) and 2023 champion Tony Finau (+2200).

Memorial Park is a par 70 and plays at 7,435 yards, so it's one of the longer courses on tour. It underwent a major renovation in 2019, which is when the PGA Tour returned to this site, with everything from hole distances changing to bunkers and trees being removed. Scheffler and Finau share the course record of 8-under 62, which Scheffler shot in 2021 and Finau carded in 2022.

Texas Children's Houston Open – Expert picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:32 p.m. ET.

Will Zalatoris (+1800)

Zalatoris' missed cut at the Players Championship was surprising, but it shouldn't be enough to deter bettors from taking him again this week in Houston. He typically plays well when the conditions are tough, as evidenced by his major finishes, and while he's never played this event before, it's a good bounce-back opportunity for him at a course that emphasizes ball striking over putting.

Sahith Theegala (+2200)

Theegala finished 61st and 22nd in his 2 starts at this event, but it's reasonable to think he'll improve upon both of those finishes this year. He's in the midst of his best season yet, already posting 4 top-10s and a runner-up in 8 starts with only 1 missed cut. Theegala is just the type of player who can unseat Scheffler at the top.

Keith Mitchell (+4000)

Mitchell had the Valspar Championship in his hands before collapsing in the final round with a 77 on Sunday. That dropped him from 1st to 17th on the last day of the tournament after holding a 2-shot 54-hole lead. That ending to his week will leave a bitter taste in his mouth, but it was more of a fluky performance with the driver than anything. He finished 41st here in 2021 and 9th in 2022.

Texas Children's Houston Open picks – Contenders

Joel dahmen (+6600).

After missing the cut in 3 of his 1st 5 starts of the season, Dahmen has gotten back on track by making it in each of his last 3 starts – including an 11th-place finish at the Players Championship. He followed it up with a T-49 at the Valspar last week and now ranks 27th in strokes gained: off the tee and 8th in approach.

Aaron Rai (+5000)

Rai missed the cut at the Valspar Championship by a few shots but he had notched 3 straight top-35 finishes before that. His putter hasn't cooperated, ranking 136th in strokes gained on the greens but he's 23rd tee-to-green. This is a course he's had success at before, finishing 7th and 19th in his last 2 starts here.

Texas Children's Houston Open picks – Long shots

Alex smalley (+12500).

Smalley has missed the cut in 7 of his 9 starts this season and one of his made cuts resulted in a 75th-place finish. So why bet him now? Because he finished 4th in this tournament in 2022 and 15th the year prior, so he clearly knows this course well.

Tyson Alexander (+25000)

Peter Malnati showed on Sunday that no matter a player's odds, anyone can win at any time. Alexander is a mega-long shot at +30000, but he was the runner-up here in 2022 and already has 1 top-20 finish this season.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from golf model that called 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

keith mitchell tour wins

Although Ludvig Aberg wasn't able to become just the seventh golfer in the last 100 years to win his first career major appearance, the 24-year-old performed better than everyone besides the No. 1 golfer in the world at the Masters. Aberg, who finished second behind Scottie Scheffler and three strokes better than the third-place finishers, will try to carry that success into his second major at the 2024 PGA Championship on Thursday, May 16 at Valhalla Golf Club Louisville, Ky. Aberg, who is 16-1 odds in the 2024 PGA Championship odds, has made the cut in his first nine tournaments in the 2024 PGA Tour schedule as one of the top golfers in his first full-time season on the PGA Tour. Scheffler is the 4-1 favorite in the latest PGA Championship odds 2024, followed by Jon Rahm (9-1) and Rory McIlroy (10-1).

Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering picks on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Morikawa finished third at the Masters at 4-under-par, as the 27-year-old continues to have  his best performances at major events. He is already a two-time major champion, including winning the PGA Championship in 2020 and has four top-five finishes over his last 10 majors.

Morikawa has six career PGA Tour victories and two top-10 finishes over his first eight PGA Tour events this season. What he lacks in driving power he makes up for in accuracy, ranking fifth in driving accuracy, so he rarely has to take his second shot from anywhere but the fairway. He's a top-30 putter on the PGA Tour, ranking inside the top 30 in birdie average, one-putt percentage and putting average.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .

2024 Valspar Championship leaderboard, scores: Keith Mitchell goes on heater as Justin Thomas implodes

An all-time bad putting day from thomas made waves at innisbrook.

Valspar Championship - Round Three

Most notable after 54 holes of the 2024 Valspar Championship is how many golfers have a chance to win. Well, that and Keith Mitchell's insane 3-2-2 finish on one of the trickier closing stretches on the PGA Tour to take the lead entering the final 18 holes at Innisbrook on Sunday.

Mitchell took a two-shot lead over a big group by holing out from 151 yards on the 18th -- a shot he didn't even see go in the hole -- to complete a 29 on the back nine and enter the clubhouse with a 5-under 66 for the day that put him 10 under for the event. He leads three different golfers by two and another trio by three.

"Obviously, some luck involved in that, but the good thing is I executed all the shots I wanted to," Mitchell said of his strong close. "That's really all I could do. I could have hit those same shots and made three pars and been just as happy. ... If I hit the shots like I hit coming down the stretch [Sunday], I'll have a chance. Because I hit 'em all where I wanted to. Johnny [Limanti, Mitchell's caddie] and I had some good numbers, and we executed 'em well. Out here with the wind, small greens, small fairways, you can hit good shots and not get rewarded."

Keith Mitchell: 3-2-2 finish at 16-17-18 today Mitchell is the first player in tournament history to play "The Snake Pit" in 7 shots — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) March 23, 2024

There are an incredible 25 players within six of Mitchell's lead and 40 within six of second place. Given how much this leaderboard changed from Friday to Saturday, the closing round could be a thriller Sunday. Let's take a closer look at a wild finish to the third round at Innisbrook.

1. Keith Mitchell (-10):  It was not an impressive first 13 holes for Mitchell, who stood on the par-5 14th tee box even par for the day and three back of the lead. Then he lost his mind, closing birdie-par-birdie-birdie-eagle, the last of which was an all time moment.  Mitchell first missed seeing the hole out because he had something in his eye.

An eagle hole-out to take the solo lead! @K_m_Mitchell is the first player in tournament history to play the Snake Pit (Nos. 16-18) in 4-under par @ValsparChamp . pic.twitter.com/EWrfSoY918 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 23, 2024

Then he hilariously asked his caddie for his putter even though the ball was in the hole because he wanted to fix his pitch mark on the green. An incredibly saucy move for somebody who has perhaps as much swag as anyone on the PGA Tour.

Keith Mitchell just dunked one on the last hole to shoot 66 but asked his caddie for his putter anyway so he could use it to fix his pitch mark before grabbing his ball. That's about as saucy as it gets. pic.twitter.com/oEUSw50eP2 — Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) March 23, 2024

Will Mitchell close?

That's going to be the question of Sunday's final round. The golf has been good of late -- three top 20s in his last four starts and a bit of contention for a while at last week's Players Championship -- but "top 20" and "holding off 20 players trying to take over the top spot of a tournament" are different achievements.

Mitchell has led after 54 holes one time before on the PGA Tour -- at the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, where he shot 72 in the final round and finished T3.

"I tell myself [I'm ready to start winning more] a lot, and sometimes when you tell yourself that too much and you don't win, it actually can be a negative," he said. "It's really hard to win out here. I got my win early and felt like I could win more. Unfortunately, that's a really high expectation out here. Hopefully, I can continue to work on the right things, maybe even add some more stuff into my practice so that I can just put myself in contention more often. The more you're in contention the better chance you have to win."

Other contenders

T2. Seamus Power, Mackenzie Hughes, Peter Malnati (-8) T5. Chandler Phillips, Cameron Young, Brendon Todd (-7) T8. Cameron Champ, Adam Hadwin, Rico Hoey, Adam Svensson, Kevin Roy (-6)

The rest of the leaderboard is a smorgasbord. At one point on Saturday, there were 16 golfers with a better than 1% chance of winning the tournament but nobody with a better than 16% chance. A total free for all.

screenshot-2024-03-23-at-15-40-24.png

The three golfers in the final group on Saturday -- Chandler Phillips, Kevin Streelman and Stewart Cink -- went from the top of the board to T5, T18 and T46 respectively.

Anything can happen here on Sunday, but the players who are hitting it best (other than Mitchell, who is No. 1 in ball striking) are as follows.

  • Joel Dahmen (-1): 2nd in ball-striking
  • Ryan Moore (-5): 3rd
  • Rico Hoey (-6): 4th
  • Seamus Power (-8): 5th
  • Kevin Streelman (-5): 6th
  • Eric Cole (-2): 7th
  • Carl Yuan (-5): 8th
  • Thomas Detry (-4): 9th
  • Cameron Young (-7): 10th

Justin Thomas took 38 putts

J.T. birdied his first hole and looked poised for a charge up the leaderboard. Then he played the rest of his round in 9 over. He had one of the worst putting days I have ever seen and did not make a single putt over 3 feet. His round included four three-putts. The numbers are astonishing !

He started the day 5 under and tied with Mitchell. Eighteen holes later, he sits 13 back.

Justin Thomas lost 7.034 strokes putting today, by far the worst putting round of his career. 38 total putts 22'10" of putts made He made a 2'9" putt on the first hole and didn't make anything longer than that for the rest of the day. pic.twitter.com/ZHTiYuMHtS — Rick Gehman (@RickRunGood) March 23, 2024

2024 Valspar Championship update odds, picks

Odds via Sportsline consensus

  • Keith Mitchell: 19/10
  • Mackenzie Hughes: 13/2
  • Seamus Power: 15/2
  • Cameron Young: 15/2
  • Peter Malnati: 11-1
  • Brendon Todd: 12-1

I personally think Mitchell is going to win this tournament, but considering how bunched the board is just behind Mitchell and how much it shifted on Saturday, there is value in Young at 15/2 given how he's hitting it and in some of the guys further down like Svensson (35-1), Hoey (50-1) and Yuan (110-1).

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Keith Mitchell gets his first PGA Tour win, taking Honda

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Keith Mitchell's first and until now only win as a professional was three years ago, on something called the G Pro Tour.

As is the case with minitour life, hardly anybody was watching and hardly anybody noticed. He earned $5,600.

Those days are long gone. After 97 tries on the PGA Tour, the Web.com Tour and even the Latinoamerica Tour, Mitchell is finally a winner — and had to outslug two of the game's best players for that long-awaited victory. A birdie on the par-5 18th on Sunday capped Mitchell's win at The Honda Classic, where he held off Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler.

"It was awesome," Mitchell said. "I wish that I could come up with a better word than that, but just having a chance to come down the stretch against Rickie Fowler and Brooks, those guys are the best in the world and they've been out here proving themselves. And I'm just pleased that I could prove myself against guys like that."

"Awesome guy," Fowler said. "Obviously, a good enough player to win."

"Everybody dreams about having that putt on the 18th hole to win a tournament," Mitchell said. "And I had it today."

"I've got an outside chance, for sure," Palmer said when he was done.

About two hours later, he was in the outright lead. Not long after that, he was in a six-way tie atop the leaderboard. And his chance lasted until 5:07 p.m., when Koepka tapped in for birdie on the last and took the clubhouse lead at 8 under.

Koepka was good. Fowler was good.

Mitchell was just one swing better.

"It was good for the fans," said Koepka, the Palm Beach County native and two-time defending U.S. Open champion. "They got what they wanted, a good tournament, two of the bigger names coming down the stretch and having a chance to win. That's what this golf course will do."

Singh, the 56-year-old who was bidding to become the oldest winner of a PGA Tour event ever — Sam Snead was 52 when he won the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open — was right there until the end. Singh, who hasn't won on this tour since 2008, settled for outright sixth after a 70.

That's just one of many things that'll change now.

His biggest check as a pro was for $400,400 last year when he finished third at the Byron Nelson. This check is more than triple that — $1,224,000. He's going to the Masters. He's exempt for two more seasons. He climbed into the top 20 in the season's money list and FedEx Cup Points rankings.

And perhaps the biggest prize is this: Mitchell will never again have to wonder if he can win.

"Having status for a couple more years, putting myself in a really good position for the Tour Championship, getting to play in the four majors or some of them I guess ... I don't even know what it gets me," Mitchell said. "It's awesome."

DIVOTS: Cameron Tringale took a quintuple-bogey 8 on the par-3 17th, after hitting his tee ball into the water, then trying twice to unsuccessfully knock the ball out of the water, before retreating back toward the tee for a drop. By the time he was done, two groups —including Koepka's— were waiting on the tee to play. ... Defending champion Justin Thomas shot 71 to tie for 30th.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
