It's no secret that for years, the number one barrier of entry that kept Reddit free from outsiders was its confusing, often visually grating layout theme. Filled with seemingly random blobs of text parsed out in no real particular order, just finding the stories you want to read can be hard enough for someone who's unfamiliar with the site's style, let alone figuring out where their comment ends up after they hit enter.

RES simplifies this operation, giving you the opportunity to tightly control exactly how comments are displayed, which stories rank over each other, and what your frontpage looks like each time it reloads. All configuration settings that control RES can be found by clicking on the gear icon in the top-right corner, and selecting the "RES Settings Console".

Although it could take ten articles to fully cover all the different options RES hands out to help you customize Reddit's appearance, for the sake of brevity we're just going to list a few of our favorite tweaks that can make the most difference the next time you sign on.

First up, there's Night Mode. Personally, I like to use Night Mode whenever possible, as the standard white-on-blue theme can be pretty tiring on your eyes if you find yourself reading on the site for extended periods of time. Night mode softens everything up, throwing light gray text on a darker gray background to reduce visual strain and prevent your screen from lighting up your room like the Ark of the Covenant every time you click into a new page.

When in Night Mode, be aware that some smaller subreddits may not have the proper coding to handle the color swap, and will have difficulty displaying links, images, or comments in a readable fashion. If you find yourself unable to decipher what a headline says or how another user responded, simply click on the gear icon in the top-right hand corner, and toggle Night Mode to "off".

If your browsing habits are all about efficiency though, opting for images to automatically display beside their headline each time you load the front page or a new sub will send your scrolling experience into overdrive. This setting makes it so that instead of having to click each link individually to see the goodies contained within, you can simply load the page you want, and scroll through each image accordingly.

This works both for static images and animated .gif files, which will begin to play immediately as soon as you load the page. Depending on the subreddits you're subscribed to (or if you prefer to just hang around r/all), this turns reddit into a more feed-like, Twitter-esque endless scroll site than one that constantly requires you to be clicking in or out of new windows.

By taking a drab layout and customizing it to your exact specifications, you can make any subreddit sing the praises of your favorite presidential candidate, while leaving behind the annoying choir of commenters who think you and everyone you know is wrong about everything all the time.

On the whole, the Reddit community can actually be pretty good about censoring itself and making sure that only the best content makes it to the top of any comment chain. However, like any online forum with so many people participating in a public debate at once, sometimes the noise still finds a way to slip through the cracks.

Enter Filters. The RES Filter system allows you to set up a custom set of keywords, usernames, and identifiers that if found in a comment chain, headline, or inbox message, will automatically prevent the content from showing up after the page finishes loading. Overall this makes for a much more pleasant Redditing experience, one not clogged up by the caps-locked opinions of internet trolls or armchair experts the site is so infamously known for.

To create a filter, you'll need to start by entering the RES Settings Console, found in the gear drop-down menu. From here you'll need to select the the "Filters" tab, where you can add, remove, or control the level of restriction that each of your filters are set to.

Of all the bonus features that RES offers, the ability to subscribe to specific threads probably takes the cake as the most useful throughout.

Ever find yourself showing up to a thread early, only to discover two or three sparse comments with no upvotes between them? If it's a topic you're especially interested in, you can click the "Subscribe" button under the main headline to get a series of notifications whenever someone new contributes another comment or response.

Now every time an additional comment is added to the chain, RES will send out a notification that appears in the same corner as the configuration settings menu.

Widgets are handy both for Reddit noobies and the gristled power user. Widgets allow you to combine any part of your reddit account or separate subs into one page, creating a series of small peeks into the top ranking stories from each subreddit, the latest messages in your inbox, or the most recent replies to any of your comments.

Depending on how they're set up, widgets can enable you to do everything from staying up to date on the latest breaking world news to constantly updating a feed based on your specific search terms.

To create a widget, start by navigating to the "My dashboard" section from the RES menu. Once here, you'll see a bar of green buttons, each with a different type of widget you can install.

Choose the type of widget you want to activate (subreddit, user, comment chain, etc.) from the search bar that pops up, and type in the content you wan to pin to the page. You can enter multiple identifiers into this at once so all related widgets load at the same time.

If you use Reddit on a regular basis, there's one browser extension that you absolutely need to install right away: Reddit Enhancement Suite (RES) . It adds countless new features and improvements to the site -- once you start using it, you'll never go back.

Why do I use it? Because it allows me to filter out a lot of negativity and it lets me browse Reddit productively (yes, it's really possible to  be productive on Reddit ). But the RES extension is useful for way more than just that.

The RES extension is available on Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Safari. Think you can live without it? Here are some of the most game-changing features that will convince you to install it pronto.

1. You Can Filter out Content with RES

The most useful and important feature in the Reddit Enhancement Suite, at least in my experience, is the ability to filter out certain subreddits from showing up on the Front page and the All page.

• Open the Settings console.
• Navigate to the Subreddits section.
• Navigate to the filteReddit feature.

Here you can add your own filters. Keywords and subreddit names are the most commonly used, which will hide posts that contain said keywords and posts that belong to the filtered subreddits.

This RES feature is really useful for blocking things like political spam (e.g. Trump, Sanders, etc.) and annoying content (e.g. meme-heavy subreddits like /r/youdontsurf and /r/wheredidthesodago).

A neat trick is to hover over a subreddit's name on the All page, which brings up a popup box that you can use to add that subreddit to your filter list in just one click.

2. RES Can Block NSFW Content

While Reddit has a built-in preference that asks if you want to view NSFW content, it's not the best at filtering it all out . That why you need the Enhancement Suite's NSFW filter feature.

Toggle the very first option, called NSFWfilter, to ON and that's all you need to do. Now all posts and subreddits labelled NSFW will automatically be hidden while browsing.

Why would you need this feature? A lot of people use it so they can Reddit at work without having to worry about inappropriate thumbnails and what not. Others use it as a way to help overcome and defeat porn addiction .

Combined with subreddit filtering, this feature is superb.

3. You Can Use RES to Show Images/Videos

One of the more nifty features is the ability to open and display images/videos right on the page without having to open a new tab or visit the direct link to the image/video itself.

• Navigate to the Browsing section.
• Navigate to the Inline Image Viewer feature.

By default, this feature is enabled. Here's what it looks like:

This makes it so much easier to browse through the Front page or the All page or any individual subreddit as you don't have to waste time opening up tabs or navigating back and forth. Click to open, view the media, click to close, done.

4. You Can Switch Between Reddit Accounts

There are many reasons why you'd want to juggle several different Reddit accounts. For me, I have three of them that are split between my three main interests: writing, photography, and gaming. But with throwaway accounts and novelty accounts, that number can shoot right up.

Fortunately, the Enhancement Suite has an account switcher so you never have to track any of this yourself. You enter each account/password combination and you can switch between them with a dropdown menu.

• Navigate to the Account Switcher feature.

As far as I know, there's no limit to how many accounts you can keep stored.

5. RES Has Keyboard Shortcuts

Another big thing about the Enhancement Suite is that it has keyboard shortcuts for quick actions and navigation . For example, by default you can press the A key to upvote a post or the Z key to downvote a post.

These keyboard shortcuts can come in handy when a subreddit tries to hide the upvote/downvote buttons through CSS styling.

Other shortcuts exist for things like jumping from post to post or comment to comment, moving to the top or bottom of a thread, expanding or collapsing inline images and videos, quick navigation to the Front page or All page or your inbox, etc.

All keyboard shortcuts are customizable.

6. You Can Tag Reddit Users (With Notes)

What I don't like about Reddit is how everyone is essentially anonymous. The community is so big -- there are over 36 million user accounts -- that names don't really stick out. That's why I like the user tagging feature.

In essence, you can create custom tags on users and use them as little notes to remind yourself of who this user is and what they've done. If they're really mean, write "Jerk". If they're kind and helpful, write "Awesome". If they're good with Linux, write "Ubuntu expert".

The feature is on by default but you can toggle it by:

• Navigate to the Users section.
• Navigate to the User Tagger feature.

There's another feature, called User Highlighter, that tags users based on their relation to the current thread: thread authors are tagged blue, subreddit moderators are tagged green, and site administrators are tagged red.

7. RES Tracks New Comments in Threads

If you only browse the Front page or All page of Reddit, then you probably only visit each thread once: you check out whatever content was linked, then browse the comments a bit, then move onto the next thread.

But if you're an active participant in a smaller, tighter-knit subreddit, then you probably check into individual threads multiple times. Fortunately, the Enhancement Suite can tell you when a thread has new activity.

• Navigate to the Submissions section.
• Navigate to the New Comment Count feature.

8. You Can Subscribe to Reddit Threads

Similar to the new comment tracking feature is the ability to subscribe to Reddit threads and notify you when new comments are made . This is the better option if you specifically want to track all of the discussions in a certain thread.

I don't use this RES feature nearly as often as I should, but the few times I've used it, it has really come in handy. In any thread, click the Subscribe button. That's it.

9. RES Can Disable Subreddit Themes

Hop into any popular subreddit and you'll probably find that it's highly themed. Game-related subreddits are colored to match the game itself, political subreddits match their candidates, gadget subreddits match their gadgets, and so forth.

A lot of these themes are interesting at first but quickly lose their appeal on repeat visits. Some are just poorly designed, making it hard to browse and read people's posts. The Enhancement Suite makes it easy to rectify this.

With the extension installed, every subreddit has a checkbox in the sidebar labelled Use subreddit style . As soon as you uncheck it, that subreddit's theme disappears and you get the regular Reddit theme.

The extension also provides a Night Mode option that you can toggle in the settings dropdown menu, which turns all of Reddit into a dark gray.

10. RES Has Never-Ending Page Loads

The last feature I want to highlight will probably kill your productivity if you aren't careful about it, but it really makes browsing Reddit much easier: the never-ending page load . No more having to click Next Page! Just keep scrolling.

This is another default feature, but you can disable it:

• Navigate to the Never Ending Reddit feature.

You can also change if it auto-loads the next page or if you have to manually click to load it.

A Safari App Extension that makes Reddit suck just a little bit less on Safari 13+.

This project started in June 2019 as an attempt to port the entirety of the Reddit Enhancement Suite to the Safari App Extension framework. Since then, this project has diverted from that path and instead implements a select swath of features. Requests are welcome: simply open an issue. Pull requests are also welcome, as are code reviews.

Requirements

As of version 1.7.2, Tweaks for Reddit is only supported on macOS 11.x (Big Sur) and macOS 12.x (Monterey).

As of version 1.4, redditweaks is only supported on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) and 11 (Big Sur). This is due to the adoption of SwiftUI and Combine in version 1.4.

Versions 1.3 and below were written in UIKit with the help of SnapKit .

Installation

• Download the latest release from the releases page .
• Unzip the archive, and move redditweaks.app into /Applications .
• Launch redditweaks.app and follow the prompt to enable the extension in Safari.
• You may then close the app. It is not required to be open for the extension to work, but you cannot delete it.

Awesome and very complex plugin, recommend it! + it's relative easy to find the settings you are looking for, because ot has a really good and detailed search function integrated to configure the plugin.

I understand that development has been basically ceased since developers have moved on. However, I really wished that the disable night mode for specific subreddits feature had gotten more attention and completed beforehand. Nevertheless, res still works extremely well as it has before and keeps the old reddit usable to me even to this very date!
