Cruise to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Puerto vallarta shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in puerto vallarta.
Laze in the Sun
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Coastal Town Yelapa
Kick back and enjoy the crystalline waters of Yelapa Beach, a seemingly undiscovered stretch of sand in Puerto Vallarta's Bahia de Banderas, only accessible by boat. Don't leave without heading to a street vendor for freshly baked beach pies (coconut is quite popular), which go for just $2 per slice.
Afternoon With the Ancients
Ancient relief art on pyramid in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Just outside the village La Chloe is the Xihuacan Museum and Archeological Site, a 3,000-year-old site is believed to have been a cultural ceremonial center used by different tribes, including the Aztecs, Toltecs, Zapotecas and Olmecs. Here, you can see a wealth of ancient artifacts, including vases, figurines and jewelry.
Romance in the Air
Visit Vallarta's Zona Romantica, also known as Old Vallarta, famous for ancient streets dotted with beautiful, candle-lit restaurants, bars and cafes like Cafe de Artistes, all under colorful garlands hanging from colonial balconies. Cruise to Puerto Vallarta and shop the local markets, bookstores and galleries in the zone, and take a piece of romance with you.
Local Cuisine
Puerto Vallarta's cuisine is deeply rooted in the traditions of Jalisco, the state where Vallarta is located. Try pescado embarazado , charcoal-grilled fish marinated in lemon and slathered with salsa huichol, a distinctive sauce made with cascabel chili peppers, cumin, salt and vinegar. Or fill up on birria , a traditional stew of tender, slow-cooked goat meat spiced with guajillo chiles. And don't forget to sip some Jalisco tequila or mezcal.
Puerto Vallarta is renowned for its hand-blown glass, earthy pottery and chunky silver jewelry. Head to the town's markets of Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale or Pueblo Viejo Mercado de Artesanias, where you'll find shops brimming with the famous pottery and jewelry. Pick up your own handmade serape (shawl) or some traditional toys and masks before going back to the ship.

You can also see humpback whales and dolphins swimming in the Bay of Banderas. Continue below for some of our most recommended things to do in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico:
- Walk along the Malecon, a walkway with beautiful sculptures that runs along the Bay. It’s a lovely way to spend an afternoon in the sun.
- Visit La Casa Del Tequila, which is a tequila bar where you can taste all kinds of varieties of the strong liquor.
- Head out into the Bay of Banderas to get close to the whales and dolphins that love spending time in the warm waters.

Puerto Plata Cruise Port (Taino Bay)
As cruise port, Puerto Plata/Taino Bay is visited by liners of other than Carnival Corporation-owned major cruise shipping companies . As call port, Puerto Plata is visited mainly as part of Eastern Caribbean itineraries with lengths 4-5-7-days.
Like Carnival's Amber Cove, Taino Bay Cruise Port has a large swimming pool (free access/complimentary) with a swim-up bar, in-pool chaise lounge chairs and live DJ music. Beach beds and chairs by the pool are also complimentary.
Taino Bay has two restaurants (both a-la-carte-priced) - Sanmangu (serving local cuisine specialties and classic Caribbean dishes) and Casa Palapa (serving mainly Mexican food). The cruise port also houses the Cortaito (patisserie/coffee shop) and a total of seven bars, while Taino Village houses the shops.
In 2023, Port Taino Bay invested US$95 million to expand its docking facilities to be enabled to accommodate even the world's largest passenger ships - Royal Caribbean's OASIS-class.
The most popular tourist destination from Puerto Plata is Mt Isabel de Torres which is accessed by road/driving, hiking, or via the cable car (approx 2 km from the cruise port; the roundtrip ticket currently costs US$10).
A popular excursion option is visiting the Damajagua waterfalls (27 total, of which 7 are visited) located at ~half-hour drive from the city. Damajagua tours offer activities like hiking, rafting, in-cave and natural pool swimming.
Another often booked tour is visiting Fortaleza San Felipe (16th-century-built Spanish fortress, now a museum/since 1965).
The main means of transportation for tourists in Puerto Plata/Taino Bay are taxis and Uber.
Besides being an important cargo port, Puerto Plata is also a popular vacation travel destination famous for its premium hotels and all-inclusive spa resorts, including Grand Paradise Playa Dorada, Iberostar Costa Dorada, Senator Puerto Plata, Hodelpa Playa Dorada, Casa Colonial Beach, VH Gran Ventana Beach, VH Atmosphere, Be Live Collection Marien, Playabachata, Lifestyle Holidays, BlueBay Villas Doradas, Cofresi Palm Beach. In the city alone are available 100,000+ hotel beds. The city's aerial tramway (Caribbean's first) connects downtown to Mount Isabel de Torres - the peak of an 800-m (2625 ft) high mountain within the city.
The city is served by Gregorio Luperon Airport (approx 15 km / 9 mi east of Puerto Plata) with regularly scheduled international flights linking to Europe (Belgium), USA (NYC, Newark Liberty), Canada (Montreal, Toronto), Caribbean (Turks and Caicos). Seasonal flight link to Russia, Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden. Puerto Plata's economy is mainly based on tourism, agricultural production, and shipping trade (cargo port services), in addition to shipbuilding, commercial fishing, textiles.
Fortaleza San Felipe is a historic fortification (1577-built Spanish fortress, now museum housing military artifacts) located close to the cruise port.
Another best-known tourist attraction is Museo Del Ambar (amber museum with Dominicana's biggest exhibition).
Approx 42 km (26 mi) west of Puerto Plata is La Isabela - Spain's ever-first settlement in the Americas, established in 1493 by Christopher Columbus (Italian explorer and colonizer, 1451-1506). In 1496, due to a mutiny caused by hunger and diseases, La Isabela was abandoned. Columbus continued its expedition and soon established Santo Domingo de Guzman .
Amber Cove Cruise Port (Carnival)
Carnival's exclusive port Amber Cove encompasses 30 acres (12 hectares / 0,12 km2) of waterfront property. The new port was built in partnership with Grupo B&R (Agencias Navieras B&R, Republica Dominicana). The new port was named "Amber Cove" after the rich amber mineral reserves found in the region. The list of other Carnival-owned private island destinations and exclusive cruise ports of call includes Half Moon Cay (Bahamas) , Princess Cays (Bahamas) , Grand Turk Island (approx 160 km / 100 mi to the north of Amber Cove), Puerta Maya (Cozumel Mexico) and Mahogany Bay (Roatan Island, Honduras) .
The world's largest cruise shipowner Carnival Corporation invested ~USD 85 million to develop the purpose-built Amber Cove Terminal. During its first year of operation (2015) Port Amber Cove handled 250,000+ passengers. The facility supports ~430 local jobs.
Through its subsidiaries, Carnival Corporation has operations in almost every part of the world. Its ships operate from 128 global seaports. However, the new cruise port facility reflects the company's intentions for further growth through new Caribbean itinerary options. The large Amber Cove port complex is set in a broad cove ringed by mountains. The new terminal has 2 berths that accommodate the world's largest cruise vessels .
Amber Cove features a waterfront tourist center, waterfront cabanas, recreational area (green spaces, swimming pool, water park), hilltop observation point (with bar), retail shops (selling local, hand-made souvenirs and crafts), multiple drinks and food options. The terminal also has a staging area where cruise tourists can embark on 40+ regional land tours (shore excursions). The nearby Ocean World is one of the Caribbean's largest marine adventure parks.
The cruise port was inaugurated with a grand opening ceremony held on November 2, 2015. The special event was attended by Danilo Medina (Dominicana's President), Francisco Javier Garcia (Dominicana's Minister of Tourism), Arnold Donald (Carnival Corporation's CEO), Jeffrey Rannik (B&R Group's President). Following the first visit ( Carnival Victory , October 6, 2015), additional ships from CCL-Carnival Cruise Lines fleet plus 7 other Carnival Corporation-owned companies (AIDA, Costa, Cunard, Holland America, Princess, P&O UK, Fathom) visited Amber Cove.
Notably, Amber Cove was the first port destination for the inaugural voyage of the new brand "Fathom" (2016-2017), which operated 7-day roundtrips from Miami to Cuba (starting April 10, 2016). In 2016, Carnival Sensation visited Amber Cove as call port on year-round operated 4-5-day itineraries out of Miami . In 2017, the itinerary was changed to 5-night / 6-day, with call ports Grand Turk and Amber Cove.
In its first full year of operation, the Carnival Corporation's 8 brands made a total of 140 ship calls to Amber Cove, with 23 different boats. Maiden calls (by brand line) included Cunard's RMS Queen Mary 2 (Nov 22, 2015), P&O Azura (Dec 5, 2015), AIDAvita (Dec 11, 2015), Costa Deliziosa (Dec 31, 2015), HAL's ms Eurodam (Jan 19, 2016).
In 2023, for the first time, Amber Cove Port surpassed the 1 millionth cruise tourist mark.
On March 8, 2024, Carnival Corporation inaugurated Amber Cove Cruise Center's solar park. The facility (comprising 1800+ PV panels) now supplies ~80% of the Port’s electricity.
Puerto Plata-Amber Cove cruise terminal
Note: This page combines Cruisemapper's schedules for two different cruise ports/terminals - Amber Cove (exclusive for Carnival Corporation-owned ships), and Puerto Plata. The distance between the ports is 12 km (7,5 mi), with travel time ~20 min drive.
Amber Cove Cruise Terminal
The passenger terminal (Amber Cove Cruise Center) is located near Puerto Plata, on Maimon Bay. The new facility is one of the largest investments ever made in the Dominican Republic. The cruise terminal has 1 pier with 2 berths and a max daily capacity 8000 passengers (plus 2000 crew). A transportation hub allows passengers easy access to the surrounding destinations and attractions.
The new terminal was inaugurated In October 2015. Carnival Victory was the first-ever ship to call here. In the period 2016-2017 Summer, the cruise port was a regular port of call (with overnight stays) on Fathom cruise line's (MS Adonia) itineraries to Cuba leaving roundtrip from Miami Florida .
The following map of the Amber Cove cruise port shows all facilities in the terminal complex.
The list of terminal facilities features Marketplace (convenience store, shopping center/ domestic crafts, souvenirs), Cafe El Cibao, Elements (Dichroic Glass items and jewelry shop), Pareo's House (clothes and souvenirs shop), Coco Cana (Bar & Restaurant, poolside lounge, shop), Turquesa (gift shop), Yofi Skin Care (shop), Wild Play (clothes, gifts, pharmacy), Ocean World (gifts, luxury watches, designer jewelry), Effy Jewelers (shop), Yvon International (art gallery), Tourist Information, Car Rental, Taxis (rank, pre-arranged tour bus pick-up), Shorex Booth (shore excursions/tours booking and information), dedicated Crew Center.
Among the terminal's signature facilities are also a large swimming pool (with kids' splash zone), Zip-Line (waterslides), watersports rental, Cabana Bar, Sky Bar, also hillside-, poolside and overwater cabanas for rent.
Puerto Plata Cruise Terminal "Taino Bay"
In December 2019, Puerto Plata Port Investment announced that the Cancun Mexico-based company ITM Group MX (that also manages Puerto Costa Maya, Mexico ) is the winner of the tender for building a dedicated cruise ship terminal in Puerto Plata. The new facility (Taino Bay Cruise Terminal) will be operational by November 2020. The site for the new cruise terminal is a former cargo dock.
During its first year of operations (November 2020 through December 2021), the new Taino Bay Terminal plans to handle 650,000+ cruise tourists with 150+ ship calls.
Taino Bay Cruise Terminal covers 20 acres (8 hectares) and is divided into 4 main areas. As facilities and amenities, Taino Bay Terminal has one pier (expanded former cargo pier allowing simultaneous berthing of 2 world's largest cruise liners plus 1 smaller-sized ship), Aldea de Los Tainos (tourist village themed on the pre-Columbian Indian culture), Jungla de Los Monos (interactive eco-park with a botanical garden, aviary, reptile island, wildlife encounters/monkeys), Villa de Los Bucaneros (Buccaneers Village/entertainment complex with a lazy river), Port Cibao (theme park/water park with slides, separated kids and adults pool areas), Centro Colonial (shopping-dining complex/restaurants, bars, shops, live street entertainment).
A zip line is planned to encircle the entire Taino Bay complex.
Direct access (via cruise line shuttle bus services) is provided to Fuerte San Felipe (fortress) and Santo Domingo de Guzman . In addition, from Puerto Plata will be developed and offered (via local companies) around 30 land tours/shore excursions.
On December 15, 2021, was officially inaugurated Port Taino Bay. The ceremony was held during the visit of MSC Seashore - the first ship to dock at the new facility.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic
Carnival, royal caribbean will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.
Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.
Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.
“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.
Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”
On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.
“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.
Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.
Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.
The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”
“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”
Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.
Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”
Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.
This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.
“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.
A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.
The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.
Baltimore bridge collapse
How it happened: Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship . The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.
Victims: Divers have recovered the bodies of two construction workers , officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . A mayday call from the ship prompted first responders to shut down traffic on the four-lane bridge, saving lives.
Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, which provides about 20,000 jobs to the area . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .
Rebuilding: The bridge, built in the 1970s , will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild , experts said.
