Emirates Allows Free Full Refund, Rescheduling & Travel Voucher Options

Manish Khandelwal

UAE national carrier Emirates has updated its COVID-19 travel waiver policies into one simplified approach for rebooking and full refund on tickets issued in all its global markets, without any penalties. Emirates has also made it easy for customers to request these options online through a simple form.

Adnan Kazim, Chief Commercial Officer, Emirates, said, “The travel and airline industry have complicated rulebooks for how fares, re-bookings or refunds are applied, which also differ depending on market regulation. We understand that explaining and unraveling all of that is confusing and frustrating for customers.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented for everyone, and we’d like to thank our customers and trade partners for their patience, understanding, and support, as we worked through this period to ensure our policies, are not only customer-friendly but also in line with regulatory requirements.”

“We sincerely hope that our customers will choose to rebook and fly with us again at a later time, and that is why we’re offering up to two years validity on their current tickets, or travel vouchers which can be redeemed for any Emirates product or service.”

“Any fees for making a change to the tickets will be waived for tickets issued till May 31, 2020, for travel up to August 31, 2020. However, if they would still like to opt for a refund, we will process that. We would just like to seek our customers’ understanding that refunds will take time as we have a significant backlog to manage.”

Emirates is offering three options to its customers affected by flight cancellations and travel restrictions:

1. Keep Your Ticket:

All Emirates tickets booked before May 31 for travel up to August 31 will be automatically extended for 760 days. Customers holding such tickets can be assured their tickets will be honored, and they can rebook when they decide to travel.

Whenever they are ready to travel again, within two years from the day their ticket was originally issued, they simply need to contact Emirates or their travel agents to reschedule their flight. Their ticket will be accepted for any flight to the same Emirates destination or to another city within the same Emirates region with no fees for changes. Those who wish to rebook their ticket to travel to another region can also do so – Emirates will not charge re-issuance fees, only any applicable fare difference.

2. Request a Travel Voucher

Travel vouchers are valid for one year from the date the voucher was issued and can be extended for a second year. The voucher can be used for any Emirates product or service, which means customers can use it to offset charges for flights to any destination in any cabin class, or other services. No change fees apply to this voucher, so customers will have more flexibility to reschedule when they are ready to travel again.

Customers who have opted to keep their tickets or opted for a travel voucher can still apply for a full refund if they are unable to travel. There will be no refund penalties.

Best ways to redeem Emirates Skywards miles for maximum value

Andrew Kunesh

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

While Emirates and its gold-studded cabins have long topped the bucket lists of award travelers around the world, historically, the Emirates Skywards program hasn't received much attention.

Travelers looking to book award tickets on Emirates were forced to pick between the lesser of two evils, namely partner airlines that charged exorbitant fuel surcharges and those with outrageously high award rates.

Over the last few years, two significant changes have reversed that trend and turned Emirates Skywards into a very compelling program. Last year, Emirates reduced fuel surcharges by hundreds of dollars . This incredibly positive development came barely a month after Citi added Emirates as a 1:1 transfer partner of Citi ThankYou Points, making Emirates Skywards the third frequent flyer program to partner with all major transferable points programs .

Emirates Skywards miles are now easier to earn and award tickets are cheaper with lower taxes and fees. With that in mind, now is a great time for us to look at the best ways to redeem Emirates Skywards miles.

Earning Emirates Skywards miles

emirates airlines travel voucher

Emirates recently launched the Emirates Skywards card with Barclays. You can also transfer points from all five major transferable points programs to Emirates Skywards at the following ratios:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards – 1:1
  • Amex Membership Rewards – 1:1
  • Citi ThankYou Points – 1:1
  • Capital One Miles – 2:1
  • Marriott Bonvoy – 3:1 with a 5,000-mile bonus for every 60,000 Marriott points transferred.

Given the lower transfer ratio from Capital One and the opportunity cost of transferring Marriott points to airlines , your best bet is to focus on the "big three" credit card issuers.

This means you can transfer points from popular cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees) and The Platinum Card® from American Express to top up your Emirates Skywards account.

You can also earn miles by crediting flights to your Skywards accounts. For Emirates, you'll need to use the Emirates' miles calculator to estimate your earnings, which are based on a combination of your fare class and the distance of your flight.

Emirates also publishes individual awards charts for each of its partner airlines, with earning rates based on your fare class and flight distance. For eligible tickets, you'll earn 1.25-2 Skywards miles per mile flown. The higher the fare class, the more miles you'll earn.

It's also possible to earn Emirates miles when renting a car, booking a hotel, or shopping with certain retail partners. For full details on these earning options, be sure to check out our complete guide to Emirates Skywards .

Redeeming miles for Emirates flights

emirates airlines travel voucher

While Emirates offers an above-average experience in all three cabins, many award travelers are looking to fly Emirates first class . If you're flying on the carrier's flagship A380, the onboard shower and bar (also accessible to business class passengers) are two of the most unique amenities in commercial aviation.

Emirates prices award tickets based on flight distance but doesn't publish a formal award chart. Instead, you'll need to use the carrier's mileage calculator to figure out how much a ticket will cost.

Also, keep in mind that Emirates has three award tiers: Saver, Flex and Flex Plus.

Saver tickets are less expensive, but award space is harder to come by. Additionally, only economy and business class awards offer Saver space. Unfortunately, Emirates doesn't offer Saver first-class awards at this time.

Flex tickets are exclusive to first class. This is essentially the Saver level for first-class and offers the lowest pricing with the most availability. You can only book round-trip Flex tickets for first-class itineraries.

Finally, Flex Plus has the most award space for all classes of travel but with higher pricing. You can book one-way Flex Plus tickets in first-class too. Flex Plus can be worthwhile if you need to travel on a set date, but we recommend skipping it if possible.

Emirates award ticket pricing from the U.S.

Let's start by looking at flights from New York (JFK) to Dubai (DXB). East Coast flights shorter (and cheaper) than those departing from the West Coast. Here's a look at round-trip pricing on this route:

Meanwhile, if you were flying from Los Angeles (LAX) to Dubai, you'd need the following amount for a round-trip ticket:

Generally, these are the only two pricing tiers you'll see for direct flights from the U.S. to Dubai. The cutoff point appears to be flights over 8,000 miles one-way, which push into the higher tier.

In other words: flights from Dubai to the East Coast and Chicago (ORD) will price the same as JFK. Meanwhile, those to the West Coast or Texas (IAH and DFW) will be more expensive.

Redeeming miles for partner flights

Despite not being a member of a major alliance, Emirates partners with 15 airlines:

  • Air Mauritius
  • Alaska Airlines
  • Bangkok Airways
  • Copa Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • South African Airways
  • TAP Portugal

That's a lot of partners, so we'll focus on U.S. domestic carriers and other particularly good deals in this article.

JetBlue awards

emirates airlines travel voucher

Redeeming your hard-earned Skywards miles on a low-cost carrier like EasyJet might not be the best value. But there are some good deals to be had. Let's start with JetBlue, which is likely to be the most useful partner for North American travelers.

Emirates now prices JetBlue awards based on distance flown. To find an award price, use a website like GCmap.com to find your flight's distance. Then, compare it to the one-way award chart shown below. Award flights start at 8,000 miles for a flight 250 miles or shorter.

emirates airlines travel voucher

For example, a flight from New York-JFK to Boston (BOS) is 187 miles one-way. This would put the flight into the cheapest award tier. This might be a good deal if pricing is high on your flight of choice, but make sure to compare the cash cost first.

Unfortunately, you cannot use Skywards miles to book Mint business class tickets .

Alaska awards

Emirates' other North American partner is Alaska Airlines, which will join the Oneworld alliance this year . Like JetBlue awards, the price you'll pay for an Alaska award ticket depends on how long your flight is.

Unlike JetBlue, however, you can use your Skywards miles for tickets in Alaska Airlines first class.

Here's a look at the award chart:

Korean Airlines awards

If you're looking to fly to Asia, you should also consider Korean Air. Emirates prices Korean Airlines awards by region instead of distance. This opens up some interesting redemptions.

For example, you can fly Prestige Class round-trip from the U.S. to Seoul (ICN) for just 105,000 miles. That is the same amount many airlines would charge for a one-way award. Here's a look at the full award chart for round-trip flights to/from Korea.

Unfortunately, you can't redeem Emirates miles for Korean Air first class .

Redeem for other travel

emirates airlines travel voucher

You're not limited to redeeming your Emirates Skywards miles for airfare either. You can also redeem your miles with travel partners for things like hotels and car rentals. We'll take a look at the different partners and ways to redeem Emirates points in this article.

Keep in mind that these redemptions generally don't give you the best value.

Hotels with Skywards Hotels

Emirates' own Skywards Hotels program lets you earn and redeem Skywards miles for hotel stays around the world.

On the earn side, you'll earn a set number of miles for every hotel stay you book through the portal. The number of miles you earn on a hotel stay usually correlates to how much the stay costs.

Likewise, you'll spend more miles for higher-priced hotels when you redeem for stays. We've found that this gives you a relatively low value, so skip this redemption option if you can.

For example, this one-night stay at the Swissotel Chicago costs 47,043 miles. Alternatively, you can book the same stay for $188, so you're getting just 0.4 cents per point in value. This is significantly lower than TPG's valuation .

emirates airlines travel voucher

Note that you usually won't earn hotel points or get elite status benefits on these hotel stays. Most of these programs require that you book directly to use your benefits. Keep this in mind as you book rooms through the portal.

Vacation packages with Emirates Holidays

Emirates also has an in-house vacation booking service called Emirates Holidays. This service helps you book everything from hotels to activities. Everything is handled start-to-finish by Emirates' travel consultants so you can be sure you're getting the best deal and finding hidden gems for your travels.

You can redeem your miles toward Emirates Holidays vacation packages. You can redeem miles in increments of 5,000 for an AED110 discount, equal to roughly $30. This isn't the best deal at just 0.6 cents per mile in value, so we recommend steering clear of this redemption too.

Arabian Adventures tours

Finally, you can use your Emirates Skywards miles for tours with Arabian Adventures. This tour company operates themed tours of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. There's everything from food tours to desert safaris outside of Dubai. Whatever you choose, it's a great way to see the UAE in a new light on your next trip.

You can use Skywards miles to purchase any of the tours listed on the Emirates website. Most of these tours only yield 0.3 cents per point in value, however, so we recommend paying out of pocket instead. You'll get a far better value redeeming your miles for flights.

Redeem for merchandise and more

There are a handful of non-travel ways to redeem your miles too. There are two ways to redeem your miles for merchandise, and both offer relatively poor value. That said, we'll run through them below, so you know what to look for if you decide to redeem your Emirates Skywards miles this way.

Redeeming through the Emirates Official Store

You can spend your Emirates miles on the Emirates Official Store to purchase Emirates-branded merchandise. This includes things like model planes, apparel, mugs and more. There's some interesting merchandise here that you can purchase with cash or your Skywards miles.

emirates airlines travel voucher

Unfortunately, you'll get poor value if you use your miles to purchase merchandise here. We've found you'll get roughly 0.45 cents per point from these redemptions, which is low. So, save your miles for flights and pay for your Emirates swag with cash.

Convert to Heathrow Rewards points

emirates airlines travel voucher

Heathrow Rewards is the rewards currency of London-Heathrow (LHR) airport. You can earn these points when you shop at Heathrow airport or with partners, like Emirates. You can transfer your Skywards miles to Heathrow Rewards points at a 6,000:2,000 ratio, meaning 6,000 Skywards miles equals 2,000 Heathrow Rewards points.

You can use Heathrow Rewards points for discounts on parking, shopping credits at Heathrow airport, Heathrow Express discounts and more. You'll generally get £5 per 500 points spent, meaning 6,000 Skywards miles is a £20 discount on shopping. This is roughly $27.30, so you get just 0.39 cents per point in value with this transfer.

So unless you've found an exceptional use of Heathrow Rewards points, skip this redemption for now.

Best use of Emirates Skywards miles

emirates airlines travel voucher

As you can see, you'll get the most value from your Emirates Skywards when you redeem for airfare. Here's a look at some of the best Emirates Skywards redemptions. Most of these are Emirates-operated flights.

U.S. to Dubai and beyond in first or business class

emirates airlines travel voucher

Emirates flies to most major U.S. cities from its Dubai (DXB) hub, with the most popular routes being New York-JFK, Newark (EWR), Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) and Los Angeles (LAX). As discussed earlier, these routes are priced based on how long the flight is.

You'll get a solid redemption value when you redeem Skywards miles on any of these flights in first or business class. They aren't cheap redemptions per se, but it's the only easy way to redeem transferable points for Emirates first or business class.

Check out the earlier section on Emirates flight pricing for more information.

Of course, you can redeem Alaska Mileage Plan miles on Emirates flights too. That said, Emirates is ending first-class partner redemptions later this year. This means that Emirates Skywards will soon be your only option for redeeming points on Emirates first-class flights.

Emirates continues to innovate the onboard experience. A few years ago, the carrier debuted a stunning six-seat first-class cabin on a handful of 777-300ERs.

This new product features fully-enclosed suites, advanced lighting and temperature controls, the ability to order by video chatting with flight attendants and even virtual windows for those passengers "stuck" in the middle.

Only a handful of Emirates' 777s feature the new cabin and the planes have primarily been used on flights between Dubai and Europe, but they occasionally see U.S. service too. You may have a hard time finding award space because of the low seat count, but it's well worth the search.

Fifth-freedom routes

Emirates also operates two fifth-freedom routes from the New York area to Europe . These flights have stirred up a great deal of political controversy. Still, they're great news for award travelers looking to experience a higher quality of service than what the competition offers on these routes.

Before the pandemic, Emirates operated a daily A380 flight from JFK to Milan (MXP), as well as a daily flight from Newark (EWR) to Athens (ATH) with a Boeing 777-300ER. Here's round-trip pricing:

Korean Airlines Prestige Class

emirates airlines travel voucher

Korean Airlines Prestige Class is the airline's equivalent of business class . Its well regarded as one of the best business class products in Asia. The airline's huge U.S. presence makes it a comfortable nonstop flight to Seoul.

As discussed earlier, Emirates and Korean Airlines have a non-alliance partnership. You can redeem Emirates Skywards miles for Korean Airlines tickets, and you'll get a solid deal in the process. Round-trip Prestige Class tickets cost just 105,000 Skywards miles round-trip — an excellent deal.

The same pricing applies to flights to Korea from Oceania and Europe too. This is a far better deal than booking with Delta Skymiles — especially after the most recent devaluation . Plus, it's an easy way to book Korean Airlines flights with your transferable points.

Where to search award space

emirates airlines travel voucher

Your best bet for finding Emirates award space is using the Emirates website. It will show all the open award space, whether Saver, Flex or Flex Plus. The website will default to a calendar search function that lets you see a week's worth of availability at once.

emirates airlines travel voucher

This is helpful, especially when looking for Emirates first class award space. When you see a date-pair that works, click on it and you'll be directed to the search results, where you can see the flight breakdown and price.

emirates airlines travel voucher

In terms of partner bookings, you can book some partners online while others require a call-in. You can see if a partner is bookable on the airline's Emirates partner page.

You can also use ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures) to search for Emirates award space. We recommend setting an ExpertFlyer email alert when looking for hard-to-find first class award space. This will save you a ton of time versus manually searching for awards day after day.

Emirates Skywards FAQ

emirates airlines travel voucher

Now that you know how to redeem Skywards, here are a few quick things you should know about the program.

How to join Emirates Skywards

You can join Emirates Skywards for free on the Emirates website. To sign up, click the Log In button at the upper right-hand corner of Emirates' homepage.

emirates airlines travel voucher

Then, click the Register Now button on the right-hand side of the screen.

emirates airlines travel voucher

Emirates will ask you for some basic info like your birthdate, name and email. Fill this out and you can begin using your new Emirates Skywards account immediately.

When do Emirates Skywards miles expire?

Emirates Skywards miles expire on a rolling basis. They will expire at the end of your birth month, three years after you earn them. So if you earn 5,000 miles in January 2021 and November is your birth month, these miles expire Nov. 30, 2024.

You can pay to extend your miles by another 12 months. Unfortunately, earning more Skywards miles doesn't extend the validity of your existing miles. Be sure to redeem your miles before they expire, so you don't lose them or need to pay for an extension.

Can I transfer points to Emirates?

As discussed in the intro, you can transfer all the major transferable points to Emirates Skywards. Here's a look at all participating programs and their respective transfer ratios.

Related: Amex Membership Rewards vs. Chase Ultimate Rewards

Bottom line

While Emirates itself is no stranger to attention, the Emirates Skywards program is just starting to come into its own. It doesn't offer the cheapest award rates out there. Still, the combination of massively reduced fuel surcharges and a record number of transfer partners makes Skywards a more compelling choice for your next award redemption.

We recommend sticking to Emirates flights for most of your Skywards redemptions. Korean Airlines business class can be an excellent deal too. That said, you'll want to steer clear of most non-travel redemptions, including hotel stays and tours. These will give you a low redemption value.

Dubai-based Emirates offers some of the most highly regarded airline experiences in the world. Whether you’re flying in economy or its ultra-luxurious first class, Emirates offers a distinctive experience and has established itself as arguably the preeminent brand in all of commercial aviation.

In the 35+ years since its first flight, Emirates has expanded its route network across the globe from its hub in Dubai (DXB). With its central location and over-the-top destination airport for duty-free shopping, Emirates is the airline of choice for many world travelers.

However, the Emirates Skywards loyalty program has some major drawbacks, especially compared to many other airline programs. The program has undergone some significant devaluations over the years. However, its miles can provide great value when redeemed correctly. Emirates Skywards are also relatively easy to earn thanks to the program’s transfer partners.

This guide will provide an overview of the Emirates Skywards program, explain how to book awards with Skywards miles and discuss some of the best ways to redeem miles.

While it’s fairly easy to earn Emirates Skywards , the booking process for award flights can be challenging to understand, which is why we made some how-to booking guides! See one of the following guides for help booking Emirates flights with miles:

  • Booking First Class Award Flights With Emirates
  • Booking Business Class Award Flights With Emirates

The Pros and Cons of Emirates Skywards (Quick Overview)

First and foremost, Emirates is not a member of one of the 3 major airline alliances. However, Emirates does have partnerships with individual airlines.

Some of these partner airlines include Air Canada, Bangkok Airways, Copa Airlines, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, and Qantas, among others. This means you can redeem Emirates Skywards miles for partner awards.

However, Emirates Skywards miles can also be used by flights operated by Emirates, of course. Unfortunately, Emirates does not publish an award chart for its flights. Instead, you’ll need to use the Miles Calculator on the Emirates website to price specific routes.

The calculator does not show taxes and fees, which are quite high with Emirates. These fees can be upwards of $2,000 on some routes , in addition to the mileage requirement.

Emirates has 4 types of awards: Special, Saver, Flex, and Flex Plus. Special and Saver fares typically cost fewer miles. However, Flex and Flex Plus fares have more award availability .

When booking award flights with Emirates, you can pay with a combination of cash and miles. This can be a great way to save money on a cash fare or an alternative way to book an award if you do not have enough miles.

Although Emirates is not a member of one of the 3 major airline alliances, it does have partnerships with individual airlines.

As mentioned above, paying with a combination of cash and miles is possible. With Cash+Miles, you have the flexibility to access any Emirates seat . Although you can book any seat with this method, these typically do not bring value to your points. However, if you do not have the miles needed for an award ticket, this provides a different way to book an Emirates ticket.

You can also use Emirates Skywards miles to upgrade paid tickets. Prices are determined by route and ticket type. Upgrades begin at just 7,020 Skyward miles. You can use the Emirates Miles Calculator to find out exactly how many miles are needed.

Most tickets can be upgraded in advance, and you may also have the opportunity at check-in or even upon boarding. There are some exceptions to upgrades. You can find more information about Emirates upgrades here .

Exceptions are:

  • Business Class Saver Fare tickets: must upgrade at least 6 hours before departure
  • Economy Class Saver Fare tickets: can only be upgraded at check-in (online or at the airport) or upon boarding

Emirates has some incredibly long flights — once you board and see your seat for the next 15 hours, you may be in the mood to splurge on an upgrade!

Emirates Skywards has reasonable award fees, however, they vary depending on the type of award you booked:

  • No close-in award booking fee
  • Date change: $0 for Flex Plus/Flex tickets and $25 elsewhere
  • Destination change: $0 for Flex Plus/Flex tickets and up to $25 + any fare changes for Saver tickets
  • Refund: $0 for unused Flex Plus tickets, $50 for Flex tickets in first class, and $75 for Saver tickets

You can redeem Skywards miles on Emirates’ partner airlines. Emirates partners include:

Unlike flights operated by Emirates, the Emirates Skywards program has a published distance-based award chart for partner airline redemptions .

Taxes and fees on partner airline redemptions are generally much lower than on Emirates flights as you are not subject to Emirates’ high carrier-imposed surcharges.

Using a different airline’s search program can save you time when searching for partner award space. Check out our Ultimate Guide to Searching for Flight Award Space .

Emirates Skywards miles are valid for at least 3 years from the date earned . This is not exactly 3 years — in the third year, the miles expire at the end of your birth month.

Unlike many airlines, regular mileage earnings do not extend mileage validity. As a last-ditch effort, you can pay to extend Skywards miles for another 12 months at a rate of $20 per 1,000 miles .

How To Boost Your Emirates Skywards Balance

Emirates Skywards is a transfer partner of several credit card points programs. These include Bilt Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards , American Express Membership Rewards ,   Citi ThankYou Rewards , and Capital One Miles at a 1:1 ratio, or from Marriott Bonvoy at a transfer rate of 3:1. Plus, for every 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points that you transfer, you’ll receive an extra 5,000 Emirates Skywards miles .

The 14 Best Ways To Use Your Emirates Skywards Miles

We’ve searched far and wide to find some great redemptions with Emirates Skywards. The following are some of the best ways to use Emirates miles.

Emirates does have some restrictions on one-way bookings with certain fares. Generally, most Emirates one-way flights are significantly more expensive than half of a round-trip flight , so it’s always better to book round-trip flights if you have the necessary balance.

When booking one-way flights, you’ll only be able to book the Flex Plus  awards, which will be the highest in cost. The silver lining with Flex Plus bookings is that they are the most flexible types of tickets, meaning you can cancel and change your tickets without any fees.

On the other hand, round-trip flights are always a better deal cost-wise, though you may have to pay a cancellation or change fee .

Emirates New 777-300ER First Class Suites

Let’s start with the aspirational bucket-list experience for many points and miles travelers: Emirates First Class. Whether you’re flying on the Boeing 777-300ER or the Airbus A380, you are bound to have an excellent experience. Emirates routinely makes the list of the best international first class airlines .

Emirates has much to offer in first class, from inflight showers to fully enclosed suites.

Award space tends to be quite random. However, some routes have decent availability when booked further out. Meanwhile, some routes can be booked a few days before departure.

Here are some great example routes that you can fly with Emirates in first class (beware — routes may change without advance notice):

  • Brussels (BRU) – Dubai (DXB) one-way for 102,000 Emirates miles
  • New York (JFK) – Dubai (DXB) one-way for 163,500 Emirates miles
  • Geneva (GVA) – Dubai (DXB) one-way for 102,000 Emirates miles
  • Tokyo (NRT) – Dubai (DXB) one-way for 141,000 Emirates miles

However, if this is too many miles for a single redemption, you can fly Emirates first class on short-haul flights, including:

  • Kuwait City (KWI) – Dubai (DXB) one-way for 34,500 Emirates miles
  • Riyadh (RUH) – Dubai (DXB) one-way for 34,500 Emirates miles

Emirates First Class A380 Seat

Emirates flies an incredible-value nonstop fifth-freedom route between New York (JFK) and Milan (MXP). This is an easily accessible redemption opportunity for those in North America.

For only 45,000/108,000/204,000 miles in economy/business/first round-trip, you can experience Emirates service between the U.S. and Europe. One-way costs are 38,750/87,000/102,000 miles in economy/business/first.

This award pricing clearly shows how booking round-trip awards with Emirates can provide more value . In addition, the taxes and fees are significantly less than those for flying between the U.S. and Dubai.

Note that you cannot redeem for any other Emirates U.S.-to-Europe-award that would require transit in Dubai . The Miles Calculator will show award pricing, but Emirates will not allow you to book them.

Emirates also offers another fifth-freedom route between Newark (EWR) and Athens (ATH). However, this route is operated by a Boeing 777-300ER. The distinction must be made as the 777-300ER has a vastly inferior business class cabin.

TAP Air Portugal economy

One Emirates partner is Star Alliance member TAP Air Portugal. Although the distance-based partner award chart is expensive for long-haul flights, it also provides some excellent redemptions on shorter flights .

For example, you can book one-way flights under 250 miles in distance for 8,000 Skywards miles in economy or 16,000 miles in business. One-way flights under 500 miles on TAP Air Portugal are bookable for 10,000 Emirates miles in economy or 20,000 miles in business. This means you can get from mainland Portugal to Northern Africa (Morocco) and Spain for a reasonable amount of miles.

If you want to shell out a bit more, you can fly one-way from Portugal to Madeira or the Azores for only 14,000 miles in economy or 28,000 miles in business. These can be expensive flights, so using miles can provide excellent value.

Seychelles Beach

Seychelles is an island paradise far in the Indian Ocean . Only a handful of airlines fly to Seychelles (SEZ), and Emirates is one of them and arguably the best.

From eastern North America, round-trip flights are 85,000/174,000/327,000 in economy/business/first. One-way flights are 73,750/138,000/163,500 miles in economy/business/first.

Award pricing from Western North America is slightly more at 90,000/198,000/372,000 round-trip. If you’re looking for one-way bookings between western North America and Seychelles, you’ll pay 78,750/157,500/186,000 miles in economy/business/first.

Beach in the Maldives

With the Emirates Skywards program, award pricing for getting to the Maldives (MLE) from North America is similar to flying to the Seychelles.

Round-trip flights from eastern North America are priced at 85,000/180,000/327,000 in economy/business/first. One-way flights from eastern North America to the Maldives are 73,750/138,000/163,500 miles in economy/business/first.

Western North America is priced slightly higher at 90,000/198,000/372,000. If you want to book one-way flights between western North America and the Maldives, expect to pay 78,750/157,500/186,000 miles in economy/business/first.

Cape Town Waterfront

Cape Town, South Africa, is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world . However, it is also quite far from the U.S. A few airlines operate nonstop flights between the U.S. and South Africa — best of all, you can use Emirates Skywards miles to get there.

From eastern North America, round-trip flights are priced at 95,000/190,000/357,500 miles in economy/business/first. If you prefer one-way flights, expect to redeem 82,500/151,250/178,750 miles in economy/business/first.

Western North America is only slightly more expensive; you’ll pay 100,000/200,000/375,000 miles for round-trip flights in economy/business/first class. One-way flights will be more expensive than half a round-trip: 87,500/158,750/187,500 miles in economy/business/first class.

South Africa Safari

Kenya and Tanzania are justifiably the most famous safari destinations in the world. Seek out the annual Great Migration in person by flying on Emirates to Nairobi (NBO) or Dar Es Salaam (DAR).

Round-trip flights from eastern North America are priced at 85,000/174,000/327,000 in economy/business/first. One-way awards are priced at 73,750/138,000/163,500 miles in economy/business/first.

Flights from western North America are slightly higher at 90,000/198,000/372,000 miles. You’ll redeem 78,750/157,500/186,000 miles in economy/business/first with one-way tickets.

Burn Beach Western Australia

Perth (PER) is the gateway to Western Australia’s towering forests and spectacular diving . When flying between North America and Australia, you typically cross the Pacific Ocean. However, you can also fly on Emirates with a stop in Dubai.

Round-trip flights from eastern North America cost 115,000/260,000/489,000 in economy/business/first class. If you paid for one-way tickets, expect to shell out 100,000/207,500/244,500 miles in economy/business/first class.

Round-trip flights from western North America are slightly more expensive: 120,000/280,000/525,000 in economy/business/first. Meanwhile, one-way tickets are 105,000/222,500/262,500 miles in economy/business/first.

lemurs

Air Mauritius, an Emirates partner, offers excellent value when redeeming Emirates Skywards miles .

The lemurs of Madagascar are one of the great wildlife encounters in the world, but getting to Madagascar is not easy! A creative option is to stop in Mauritius (MRU) and then continue on Emirates partner Air Mauritius.

From the island nation of Mauritius, you can fly in economy to Réunion (RUN) for 16,000 miles round-trip, to Rodrigues (RRG) for 20,000 miles round-trip, or to Antananarivo, Madagascar (TNR) for just 28,000 miles round-trip!

This is an excellent redemption as cash fares between the islands can be expensive.

Emirates Inaugural World's Shortest A380 First Class Window Suite Cherag Dubash

If you want to try first class on the A380, you can do so without paying a mileage premium. Emirates operates a fifth-freedom route between Bangkok (BKK) and Hong Kong (HKG) that can be booked using Skywards miles.

Although the 3-hour flight is relatively short, it still provides an opportunity to fly one of the best products in the sky. This round-trip flight is only 20,000/48,000/90,000 in economy/business/first. One-way tickets are 17,500/39,000/45,000 miles in economy/business/first.

Japan Airlines Boeing 777 300ER First Class Bed

The Emirates distance-based partner award chart is typically not the best for long-haul flights. However, a sweet spot is Japan Airlines flights between Tokyo and Australia or Hawaii .

Partner award pricing depends on the total distance flown. According to the award chart, flights between Hawaii and Tokyo fall in Zone 6, priced at 32,000 miles one-way in economy or 77,500 miles one-way in business.

Meanwhile, flights between Sydney and Tokyo cost 38,000 miles one-way in economy or 92,500 miles one-way in business.

Jeju Island

The Emirates partner award chart for Korean Air also has some sweet spots. You can book domestic Korean Air award flights for as few as 8,000 miles for a one-way flight in economy if the distance flown is less than 250 miles. One-way flights between 251 and 500 miles in length cost 10,000/20,000 in economy/business.

You can use that bargain award to visit Korea’s honeymoon retreat, Jeju Island (CJU), to see 4 seasons of spectacular nature. For just 10,000 miles one-way, this is a great redemption.

Korean Air business class

Another solid redemption using Emirates miles for Korean Air is on business class flights between the U.S. and Korea. You can book a one-way business class flight between Seoul and Hawaii for 92,500 miles!

If you’re traveling between Korea and West Coast destinations like San Francisco (SFO) or Seattle (SEA) , a one-way business class flight costs 105,000 miles. This is still an excellent deal, considering it’s one of the cheapest options for booking Korean Air awards between the U.S. and Korea .

It is worth noting that there is inconsistent award availability . However, this is a redemption worth considering if you can find the award space. Here are some great example routes you can take:

  • Honolulu (HNL ) – Seoul (ICN ) round-trip in Korean Air business class for 185,000 Emirates miles
  • San Francisco (SFO ) – Seoul (ICN) round-trip in Korean Air business class for 210,000 Emirates miles

TAP Air Portugal A330-900neo Business Class

Another solid redemption is for long-haul award flights on Emirates’ partner TAP Air Portugal. With a robust network connecting Portugal to popular destinations throughout Europe and the rest of the world, it’s worth looking at optimizing flight awards so you get the best value for your Emirates miles.

TAP Air Portugal operates a decent long-haul flight network. Importantly, it operates many nonstop flights between Portugal and the U.S. through its 2 largest airports: Lisbon (LIS) and Porto (OPO).

If you want to fly nonstop from the East Coast to Portugal, you can expect to pay 64,000 miles round-trip in economy and 155,000 miles round-trip in business class. Flights between other U.S. destinations will be a bit pricier due to the distance-based award chart for Emirates partner airlines.

This could be of great value, particularly for TAP Air Portugal’s longer flights to the U.S. Here are some great example routes you can book:

  • Newark (EWR) – Porto (OPO) round-trip in TAP Air Portugal business class for 155,000 miles + taxes and fees
  • Chicago (ORD) – Lisbon (LIS) round-trip in TAP Air Portugal business class for 185,000 miles + taxes and fees
  • Miami (MIA) – Lisbon (LIS) round-trip in TAP Air Portugal business class for 185,000 miles + taxes and fees
  • San Francisco (SFO) – Lisbon (LIS) round-trip in TAP Air Portugal business class for 210,000 miles + taxes and fees

Although the Emirates Skywards loyalty program has been devalued several times over the years, its miles are still useful on certain routes with Emirates and its partners.

Emirates Skywards miles do not provide nearly as much value compared to other programs. Still, Emirates offers one of the best business and first class products of any airline and Skywards miles can allow you to book these once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

While these are what we think are the best ways to use Emirates miles, there are certainly other options available. Happy redeeming!

Dubai Airport Survives Unprecedented Rainfall - Emirates Airlines President Writes Apology Letter

T he United Arab Emirates is used to oppressive heat but the Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest in the world, was not prepared for the unprecedented amount of rainfall this past week.

Although this would be comparable to a foot of snow falling in Miami, Dubai airport officials did an outstanding job in getting airlines back up and running within three to four days.

That prompted the president of global carrier Emirates Airlines, Sir Tim Clark, to pen an open letter to customers regarding the situation.

Emirates Airlines President's Apology Letter

"To all our valued customers,

This week has been one of the toughest for Emirates operationally, as record storms hit the United Arab Emirates.

I would like to offer our most sincere apologies to every customer who has had their travel plans disrupted during this time.

On Tuesday 16 April, the UAE experienced its highest rainfall in 75 years. Lashing storm winds and rain disrupted activity across the cities. Our 24/7 hub in Dubai remained open, with flight movements reduced for safety, but flooded roads impeded the ability of our customers, pilots, cabin crew, and airport employees to reach the airport, and also the movement of essential supplies like meals and other flight amenities.

We diverted dozens of flights to avoid the worst of the weather on Tuesday, and over the next 3 days we had to cancel nearly 400 flights and delay many more, as our hub operations remained challenged by staffing and supply shortages.

We were clear on our 2 priorities: Look after our customers who have been impacted by the disruption and get our operations back on schedule.

To free up resources and capacity to manage impacted customers as a priority, we had to suspend check-in for passengers departing Dubai, implement an embargo on ticket sales, and temporarily halt connecting passenger traffic from points across our network coming into Dubai.

We deployed additional resources to aid our airport and contact centre teams with rebooking and put on additional flights to destinations where we identified large numbers of displaced customers.

We sent over 100 employee volunteers to look after disrupted customers at Dubai Airport departures and in the transit area, prioritising medical cases, the elderly and other vulnerable travellers. To date, over 12,000 hotel rooms were secured to accommodate disrupted customers in Dubai, 250,000 meal vouchers have been issued, and more quantities of drinking water, blankets, and other amenities.

Behind the scenes, it was all hands-on deck for thousands more employees across the organisation to get our operations back on track.

As of this morning, Saturday 20 April, our regular flight schedules have been restored. Passengers previously stranded in the airport transit area have been rebooked and are enroute to their destinations. We have put together a taskforce to sort, reconcile, and deliver some 30,000 pieces of left-behind baggage to their owners.

It will take us some more days to clear the backlog of rebooked passengers and bags, and we ask for our customers’ patience and understanding.

We know our response has been far from perfect. We acknowledge and understand the frustration of our customers due to the congestion, lack of information, and confusion in the terminals. We acknowledge that the long queues and wait times have been unacceptable.

We take our commitment to our customers very seriously, and we have taken learnings from the last few days to make things right and improve our processes.

I’d like to also acknowledge and thank our teams across the airline, and our many suppliers and partners for their tireless efforts around the clock this week, despite the challenging conditions, to support customers, recover our network, and bring our operating schedule back to normal.

Finally, and once again, I want to offer, on behalf of myself, and all the teams across Emirates, our apologies to each and every customer affected by this disruption.

We will continue to work hard to live up to your expectations, and to our Fly Better brand promise.

After days of chaos at Dubai International Airport, which has seen hundreds of thousands passengers stranded, the boss of Emirates Airline has offered “most sincere apologies to every customer who has had their travel plans disrupted”.

Unprecedented flooding has caused havoc at the world’s busiest international aviation hub since Tuesday. The biggest airline is Emirates, which has cancelled the flights of 200,000 passengers and delayed many more.

The airline’s president, Sir Tim Clark, has written an open letter to passengers, saying: “We know our response has been far from perfect.

“We acknowledge and understand the frustration of our customers due to the congestion, lack of information, and confusion in the terminals.

“We acknowledge that the long queues and wait times have been unacceptable.”

In a bid to limit the crowding at Dubai airport and clear some of the stranded passengers, Emirates temporarily suspended check in at its hub and for passengers booked to fly in from points around the world.

Many travellers are still stuck thousands of miles from home. A dozen Saturday morning arrivals from key locations were cancelled, with passengers heading for the UK left with few rights .

Cancelled flights inbound to Dubai included:

  • Australasia: Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
  • Africa: Cape Town (two), Johannesburg, Dakar and Nairobi.
  • Indian sub-continent: Hyderabad, Mauritius and Mumbai.

From this afternoon, Saturday 20 April, Emirates appears to be flying a full schedule, with some flights delayed.

Sir Tim, who is the most influential figure in global aviation, writes; “Passengers previously stranded in the airport transit area have been rebooked and are en route to their destinations.

“We have put together a taskforce to sort, reconcile, and deliver some 30,000 pieces of left-behind baggage to their owners.

“It will take us some more days to clear the backlog of rebooked passengers and bags, and we ask for our customers’ patience and understanding.”

The Independent has been hearing from disgruntled passengers about delays and confusion. John Baker, who travelled from Bangkok to Birmingham via Dubai, described chaotic scenes at the hub with inaccurate and delayed information.

“I know the weather is beyond anyone’s control, but timely information reduces irritation even if it is bad news.

“There was no information. A company like Emirates must plan for response in such situations.”

Mr Baker eventually arrived in Birmingham around eight hours late, but his baggage is apparently still in Dubai.

Other airlines have been affected: British Airways has not flown its full schedule to and from Dubai since Tuesday, with the airport imposing capacity restrictions. BA appears to be running normally from Sunday.

Emirates is dealing with a 30,000 bag backlog as it grovels to customers about its handling of Dubai floods

  • Severe flooding caused by the heaviest rain in 75 years brought travel chaos to Dubai Airport last week.
  • The ongoing fallout has prompted Emirates boss Tim Clark to issue an apology to customers.
  • 30,000 bags still need to be returned to customers, he said.

Insider Today

Emirates, the Middle East's largest airline, is still trying to return 30,000 leftover bags to customers affected by the torrential rains and flooding that brought Dubai Airport to a standstill last week.

Over the weekend, the airline's president, Tim Clark, acknowledged that Emirates' response to the disruption had been "far from perfect" and apologized to customers.

"I would like to offer our most sincere apologies to every customer who has had their travel plans disrupted during this time," Clark wrote in an open letter posted online on Saturday.

Calling the previous week "one of the toughest for Emirates operationally," he said that the airline had been forced to cancel nearly 400 flights and delay many more after storms brought the region's highest rainfall in 75 years.

"Flooded roads impeded the ability of our customers, pilots, cabin crew, and airport employees to reach the airport, and also the movement of essential supplies like meals and other flight amenities," Clark wrote.

In total, 1,478 flights had been canceled at the world's second busiest airport by Friday morning, according to Reuters.

While planes remained stuck on flooded taxiways, submerged roads surrounding the airport left some passengers stranded in the airport.

Related stories

To accommodate disrupted passengers, Emirates said it had secured 12,000 hotel rooms and issued 250,000 meal vouchers.

Despite the chaos and a government warning telling people to stay at home, Emirates flight attendants in Dubai were also told to report for duty.

However, Clark acknowledged that many passengers had been frustrated by the congestion, lack of information, and confusion at terminals.

In an effort to handle the ongoing fallout, he said that a task force had been created to sort and return 30,000 pieces of left-over luggage to its owners.

The airline officially resumed regular flight operations at Dubai Airport on Saturday, but warned it would still take several days to clear the backlog.

Non-UAE-based carriers were still facing restrictions over the weekend. Foreign airlines with more than two flights in 24 hours were issued with a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) instructing them to reduce operations by 50%, Indian news agency PTI reported.

According to FlightRadar 24's data , all arrivals and departures were largely running to schedule again on Monday morning.

The oil-rich United Arab Emirates has become one of the most attractive economic hubs in the Gulf region.

Its efforts to diversify its economy away from oil, centered on Dubai as a tourism hot spot, have helped the country position itself as a major player on the world stage. In a sign of its growing popularity, the number of passengers traveling to Dubai Airport increased by 31.7% in the last year.
