Tips For Permits in Leh

  • One must carry original ID proofs mentioned while applying for ILP and multiple copies of the documents.
  • One will get ILP for all the routes separately, with sticker and stamp.
  • Once the ILP is approved, get them photocopied in 3-4 numbers of each and deposit at ATCP posts.
  • One thing that has to be noted is that the Inner Line Permit is not required for visiting all the areas. It is only needed in some areas like Nubra valley, Khardung La, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Dah, Hanu Villages, Man, Merak, Nyoma , Loma Bend, Turtuk , Tyakshi, Chushul, Hanle , Digger La, Tangyar (for trekking only).
  • Also, if someone is going directly from Pangong to Tso Moriri, it needs to be mentioned to the officer stamping the permits. They will then endorse it as "Tso Moriri via Tsagala". This endorsement is imperative for the direct route and is not included in the list of ways mentioned online.

How to Get Ladakh Inner Line Permit Online in 2024 – 25

The procedure for applying for a Ladakh Inner Line Permit online was introduced in order to simplify the process for tourists and reduce the paperwork required. While you are still required to go to the DC office in Leh to get your permit stamped, it still is a great way to secure your permits beforehand. In this article, I will run you down the complete process to get a Ladakh permit online.

Back in 2014, the need to get a permit for visiting places like Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake was scrapped. This was done in order to promote tourism in the region, support the livelihood of the local people, and to also better connect Ladakh with the rest of the country.

But 3 years later, in 2017, ILP had to be reintroduced due to the increasing Chinese incursions in the area. By that time, tourism in Ladakh had increased several folds, and managing everyone in the DC office proved to be difficult. This is when the online portal was launched and people were able to get their Ladakh permits online.

As per the circular issued in 2017, a copy of which I will share further in the article, both Inner Line permit for Indian citizens and Protected area permit for foreign nationals can now be availed online.

Quick Navigation

Ladakh Permit Online Procedure

The biggest problem with the online procedure is that it is not a complete process. You can get a permit online, pay the related charges and print a copy out but you will still need to visit the DC office to get it stamped. Without the stamp, the permit will not be considered valid.

Update: 2021

Due to the ongoing COVID situation, the need to get the permit stamped at the DC office has been removed temporarily. This was done in order to avoid the gathering of tourists in the DC office and to maintain social distancing.

You now only need to pay the fee online and that is all that is needed. The permit will remain valid without any stamp or signature.

Please note that this update is only for the year 2022 and may get removed later. It may also get continued if the authorities deem it beneficial.

How to Get Ladakh Inner Line Permit Online

In order to apply for ILP online, you need to visit the Online Portal and then follow the steps mentioned below. It will ask you for identity proof so please keep your Aadhar card/ Voter ID / Driving License handy. There is no need to register yourself first on the portal. You can directly apply for the permit.

In case the hyperlink above did not work, this is the page you need to visit –  https://www.lahdclehpermit.in/

After the webpage loads, you will notice 5 options in a floating tab on the right-hand side of the page. Click on ‘Domestic’.  This is the option for Indian citizens.

  • It will take you to another page asking you to populate your details.
  • Mention Name, Mobile Number, E-mail address, Gender, and the state you belong to.
  • Click on the ID type drop-down and select the one that you have handy.
  • Fill out your Aadhar card, DL, Passport, or voter ID number.
  • Mention your complete address
  • In the ‘Issue Permit’ field, select ‘Directly’

Individual Vs Group

  • A fly-out menu will ask you if you want to do an Individual registration or a group registration.
  • If you are traveling alone, select Individual.
  • In case you were traveling in a group and were applying permit for everyone, select group registration.
  • If you select group registration, on the next page, you will have to enter details of everyone traveling with you and their ID numbers.

Route Selection

  • On the next screen, you will be provided a list of places that you want to apply the permit for. You can select the places on basis of your itinerary.
  • My recommendation will be that you select all of them. The charges for permits are based on the number of days and people, not the places. So to ensure that you do not miss out on a place because you did not where it was located, select all of the options you are presented with.
  • In the reference field, verify your name and ID number once again.
  • Please note down Reference ID. Copy-paste it somewhere because you will need it to print your permit later.
  • Select your date of Arrival and Departure.
  • Click on Next
  • A self-declaration pop-up menu will appear with the terms and conditions of the permit. Read carefully, check the I accept box and click on Accept.

Ladakh Inner Line Permit Online Payment

  • On the next page, you will be presented with complete details of your permit and the related cost. Review the details and click on Pay Now at the bottom of the page.
  • It will take you to another page where you can make the online payment.
  • After payment, you will be provided with a receipt that you can take a printout of.
  • Using the Reference ID, you can take a printout of your permit. For this, go back to the homepage and click on the option that reads Print Permit.

route selection

If you selected the Group Registration link, you will need to fill out the details of the other travelers on the next page. The total charge that you will pay later will then be for the entire group.

Making an online payment is not mandatory. If you do not wish to pay on the portal, you can still take a print of the permit and make payment at the DC office in Leh.

I hope this information on Ladakh Inner Line Permit online portal was of help. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section below, or at our Community Forum , and I will be happy to answer.

Is there any possibility if i take the permit online and send the soft copy to any agent who stamped it? if-yes than please suggest any agent. or any budget hotel who will help us to ready the permit? if-Yes than please suggest any hotel.

Hey varghis, i had a small doubt, my hotel person said that now whole process for getting ILP is online and we dont need to visit DC office for stamping after paying online and getting the printout. Can you confirm if this information is correct or not ?

That is not correct Tejaswini. You will still need to get it stamped.

You will now have to get it in person Abhishek Bhai

Hello Vargis Brother,

Greetings of the day. I had planned to visit Leh by Zoomcar in June 2019 via Manali. But now i came to know that Zoomcar is only allowed to reach Leh(Is my information correct??). To visit Tso Moriri and Pangong i need to hire a local taxi from there which are very costly and it will also take out the thrill of driving on the roads of that region.

Is it possible to take ILP from manali so that we can visit Tso Moriri and Pangong and than Leh and come back??

Waiting for your response. Regards, Gajender

No it is not Gajender Bhai. You cannot take Zoomcar anywhere in Ladakh and don’t risk it as well. There have been incidents of vehicles getting attacked and vandalized because of this.

Thanks for your reply Vargis bhai. One more thing i have Ritz Diesel model, is it suitable to take my car to Leh?? Also it is on the name of my father, so can i get the ILP permit in this case as my father will not be going with me??

Thanks in advance.

Yes Gajender Bhai. You will get the permit but drive very carefully across the water crossings otherwise the underbelly of your car may get damaged. Low GC of the car will be a problem.

' src=

So how to do the payment ?? Pls help

No other option but to now get the permit in person after you reach Leh city.

Hi Vargis, We are planning for a 4 Day trip at the end of September. Rough plan will be like Day 1. Land in Leh Day 2. Explore locations near Leh Day 3. Explore locations near Nubra Valley Day 4. Explore locations near Pangong Tso Lake Could you please share the details of the permits required and the list of places to include in the form?

You just need the innner line permmit that I explained in the post above. Or see the post below. You just need to write either of the villages of Nubra valley and Pangong on the form and that will be enough.

' src=

I’m from Malaysia and I just submitted the application for the permit at http://lahdclehpermit.in/contactf.php

It did not ask me for my contact details. It only asks for my name, nationality, gender, passport no, visa no, visa type. address, agent and date of arrival.

I have no idea which agent to choose, so I just simply pick one.

After I submit, it says successfully received.

But I have no idea how are they going to contact me. They never asked for my contacts.

When I tried again, it says already submitted.

So what am I suppose to do now?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

' src=

I applied the online permit and paid for 2 persons as well. I got a reference no. of my permit and when i tried to print the permit, there was no details in the form other than the group ID. Could you please confirm if we need to fill that by ourselves and get it stamped in TIC Leh? Will it work ?

' src=

Dear , you are using the wrong reference no. , your reference no. is Direct followed by your id no. for example if your addhar card id no is 71925954XXXX the your reference id id Direct71925954XXXX. This is also mention in your payment slip which you have recieved in your mail id (named as “PERMIT ID”)after online transaction .

Hi, Vargis khan i am citizen of bangladesh if I want to go ladakh then how I can take permission from office. Is there any other form for foreigner to take permission? Please share link where I can take permission for leh. Thanks in advance

Hi Farhana – Bangladeshi citizens are not being issued permits for Ladakh this year. You will have to try getting it from Delhi Home Ministry but most probably will be denied. My advice would be to plan for next year.

' src=

Hi , i missed getting my ILP reference number for Leh and made the paid online , now it doesnt take me back to print the ILP, is there a way to find the ILP ref number, or to take a printout ! Thanks

Hi vargis, Actually we are travelling two. Is it for compulsory to fill permit online and make payment at DC office ? cant we fill there only to avoid any error ?

Hi Yogender, Yes you can get the permit at DC office only as well. It is completely your choice.

thanks bro.

You are welcome Yogender !!!

hi vargis brother, Actually we are travelling two. Is it for compulsory to fill permit online and make payment at DC office.? cant we fill our permit there only to avoid any error ?

' src=

Hi, I just applied online for an ILP and I was able to make payment online for the permit. Any idea if I need to go to the TIC to get the permit stamped/verified?

Hi Vargis, please let me know, if you can? Btw, your site is really helpful!

Hi Bhooma – Sorry I missed replying to your comment. Even if you were able to make payment online, It would be better if you visited the office and got your permit stamped. Better to spend an hour in Leh to get this done rather than getting sent back from the check post.

Hi Varghis, thanks a bunch for replying. Its really amazing that you are putting out all this information!

Would you know if there are any routes that are not covered in the online permit? Specifically Nubra to Pangong (directly) and Pangong to Tsomoriri (again direct?). Or the sectors listed in the online permit are all inclusive?

To be safe, I ticked all of them!

Hi Bhooma – If you have clicked all of them then you will be fine. Hanle is not in the list. If you want to go that way then you would have to mention it seperately on the form and get it stamped.

' src=

Hi Vargis Is there a permit required for driving from Nubra to Pangong via Agam-Shyok-Tangtse? If yes, which route to apply for in the ILP website?

Hi Anu – There is no permit needed for Shyok route as such. Your regular ILP for Nubra and Pangong will suffice for this route.

' src=

Hello brother,

Had a lot of clarity about places after going through your blog, still some questions remained. I hope i can get reply from your end for the same.

I am planning to go to Leh from Kargil via Batalik- Dah- Skurbuchan. I understand it requires ILP from DC Kargil. My question is how much time generally it takes? Can one take permission at same day and continue on journey.

Also I checked at your comments that one need to take rented bikes to travel pangong and other inner places. I am traveling by my father’s bike, do i also need to take rented bikes to visit other places then leh?

Thanks in advance

1. Batalik – It depends on how early you can get the permit but same day journey will be a bit tough and long. 2. Bike – Yes you can bring your father’s bike but just carry all the IDs to prove that owner of the bike is your father. No need to rent another bike in Leh then.

Below is an update on permits this year.

1. Permits to Domestic travellers are now being given from Permit Office, TIC ( Tourist Information Center, near J&K Bank, Main Bazaar). Foreigners still need to go to DC office near Polo Ground. 2. You have to fill the form online only, if you are applying in self. I am not sure about the process if you want to apply through an agent. 3. Take printout of the online permit and carry copies along with you. One each for Nubra, Pangong, Tso morriri and Hanle. 4. And yes permits are being given for Chushul, Tsagala, Loma,Hanle. They will sign and stamp your printouts and will take the required payments as mentioned in the portal. 5. For Hanle, You will have to further go to DC office. Take a copy of the permit that you received from TIC and DC office will keep a copy and will further stamp your permit ” permission to visit Hanle”. That would make your permit process complete. 6. Keep at least 3 copies of Hanle permit along with you while traveling.

Greetings from Sri Lanka We are 2 groups of Sri Lankan’s traveling to India in July and September, planning on visiting Leh, the online application form for the Inner Line Permit doesn’t have the option to enter Sri Lanka under Nationality. Please could you advise how one can get the permit?

Inner Line Permit is only for Indians.Foreign national are to obtain Protected Area Permit. Please see the link below.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/obtaining-ladakh-protected-area-permit/

' src=

I have registered for the inline permit but something went wrong with my browser. Now when I apply again it says, already registered and I don’t know my reference number. How to get the permit now?

You will have to get it in person after you reach Leh, no other way.

' src=

Or u can get it by any other person name from ur group and u can add ur name on it like a group member i did this n its work

I tried that, But we are two and I have added her name as well so it’s not accepting that as well 🙁

Then let it be. You would anyways have to go to the DC office in Leh to make the payment and get your permit stamped. Get it there only. The online portal is only for filling the form and taking a print out.

That is helpful. Thank you Imran and Vargis 🙂

You are welcome !!!

our pleasure to help you, best of luck for your journey…

Thanks Imran for this tip.

Your page is really helpful. I am sure a lot of people benefit from it. Thank you and keep the good work going!!

Thank you for your kind words Zarina. I appreciate it. Do let me know how your trip went after you return.

Hi Mr. Vargis I have one question. We are 02 families visiting Leh on 12 Jun 18. Does each and every member has to stand in que and get registered for inner area in Leh…?

Hello Mr. Pradeep, No one person can get the permit on everyone’s behalf. No need for everyone to go. Names would have to be mentioned on the same permit anyways.

' src=

We have planned to our Leh trip from 16 Aug to 22 Aug 18. Our route will starting from Manali.

My confusion is, how will we get inner line permit from Samurai. As our route first place will Samurai. And than Nubra Vally-leh-Pancong lake.

As per online permit process, we have to pay fee offline at Leh.

Is there any other option to payment of permit fee or print out of online permit is valid upto Leh.

Permits at Samurai? I did not get that.

There is no way to get the permits without reaching Leh. You will have to first get there to make the payment and get your permits signed / stamped.

Hi VARGIS.KHAN My name is Tenzin and I’m from Bir himachal so just I wanted to ask or want some favors from you. So I’m riding a solo from hp to JnK state and I got 2nd June “beyond rothang permit” so is it necessary to fixed a date like other people do or plan something because I want to explore JnK from leh to most of the places where we tourists are allowed mostly I have time for it, so need some advice

Tenzin – I am not sure what your question is. For Ladakh ILP, yes you will have to mention the dates that you need the permit for.

Vergis can u tell me if we reach manali on Tuesday can we get the permit for Wednesday as u said that on every Tuesday rohtang is closed so they work on office or they were also shut on Tuesdays.

Rohtang Pass is closed on Tuesday but the DM office is open so yes, you can get the permits.

Thank you Janab for clearing my doubts.

You are welcome brother

' src=

Vargis ji , for visiting Dah,Hanoo villages need ILP ? As I want to visit the places directly from Kargil . Can I do it ?

Hi vargis, we r planning to visit ladakh via manali route, two year before we have to get the permit from manali for cross the gulaba still that same thing is there we need any permit for gulaba check point or we can pass that without any permit

Hi Imran – Yes that is the Rohtang permit which you still need to get. See the post below please.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/rohtang-pass-permits-details-charges-apply/

Hello Mr. Vargis,

We will be making a circuit trip, DL-Jammu-Srinagar-Kargil-Leh-Manali-Delhi, so do we still need to get the Rohtang permit if we are travelling to Manali from Leh.?

Hi Pruthvi – No, rohtang permit is not required for coming to Manali from Leh.

' src=

we need your help in revieing on our itinerary. Below is our tentative date and places of visit.

26th may- Delhi-Patnitop 27th Patnitop-Srinager 28th Srinagar-Drass-Kargil 29th Kargil-Leh 30th Spare day for ILP and visit local places in Leh 31th Leh-Khardungla-Diskit 1st June Diskit-Hunder-Leh 2nd Leh-Changla-Lukung-Spangmik 3rd Spangmik-Pangong-Leh 4th Leh-Chumatang-Hanle 5th Hanle-Karzok 6th Karzok-Leh 7th Leh-Pang-Sarchu 8th Sarchu-Keylong-Manali 9th Manali-Delhi

It would be most helpful if you give your suggestion on our itinerary.

Waiting for your reply.

Dear Vargis Your blog and the comments from others are very informative. My question is whether the Inner line permit is issued by DC or DM office on Saturdays and Sundays ? The reason is I am reaching Leh on a Saturday and I plan to get the ILP in person rather than online. Keep up the good work and god bless. regards Dr Girish

Thank you Dr. Prabhu. I am afraid you will not get the permit on Sunday. You may get it on Saturday provided that you reach the office early and it is not a holiday.

We are planning our journey from Delhi on 24th May and our route is Delhi-Patnitop-Jammu-Leh(Visit places near Leh)-Manali-Delhi.

We hire Bikes from Delhi, so will there be any problem in Leh for getting ILP for rented bikes? And also mention what kind of problem we may face during ILP and give the solution too.

Bikes rented outside Ladakh are not allowed there. So you can only use your Delhi rented bikes to reach Leh. Once you get there, you will have to leave the Delhi registered bikes parked at the hotel and rent another set of bikes from Leh city itself; for visiting places like Nubra Valley, Pangong etc. There is no solution to this really.

Thanks for the suggestion Vargis.

Also we need your help in revieing on our itinerary. Below is our tentative date and places of visit.

26th may- Delhi-Patnitop 27th Patnitop-Srinager 28th Srinagar-Drass-Kargil 29th Kargil-Leh 30th Spare day for ILP and visit local places in Leh 31th Leh-Khardungla-Diskit 1st June Diskit-Hunder-Leh 2nd Leh-Changla-Lukung-Spangmik 3rd SpangmikPangong-Leh 4th Leh-Chumatang-Hanle 5th Hanle-Karzok 6th Karzok-Leh 7th Leh-Pang-Sarchu 8th Sarchu-Keylong-Manali 9th Manali-Delhi

Your itinerary looks great brother. No change needed.

Hi.. We have booked inner line permits for nubra valley an near by areas with the group of 6 people which is starting from 9 june to 16 june. But now we have preponed our plan and will be visiting on 3rd of june. So when I was going for re-registration , It is showing that already registered, so how to do modification in dates? Please suggest me as quick as possible

You cannot do it, it won’t let you. You will have to go and get the permits in person from DM office Leh now.

' src=

How to apply for marsimik la ilp online. There is no option for Marsimik la in the online form.. Plz suggest

There is no option to apply Marismak La online. You will have to do it in person at DM office Leh.

' src=

After reading this I really really got confused. Somewhere I read, most probably in your blog only, that Indian Nationals don’t need permit anymore. So I made a plan like this – Manali – Keylong – Pang – Tso Moriri – Pangong Tso – Nubra Valley – Leh – Kargil – Padum – Kargil – Srinagar.

Seems like I first have to reach Leh, get the permit and then roam around. I have taken the online form printed. Is there any way to get permit with out getting into Leh. I’m really confused.

Thanks in Advance.

Tso Moriri to Pangong will be via Nyoma Chushul

Hi Dev – Inner Line Permit was a mandate earlier. It was removed in 2014 and then brought back in 2017. So you may have read it on a post I made in these three years. As of now the permit is a mandate.

So there is noway to get the permit in Manali to Tso Moriri route??? I have to go to Leh???

Unfortunately no, unless you can find someone in Leh who can get the permits on your behalf and then courier those to you.

And before you ask, I do not have a contact in Leh who could do that 🙂

Even if you have, it will be unfair to ask you. Thanks for all the info. Keep writing. God Bless.

Thanks Brother.

Dear Sir, I have made mistakes in dates while filling my inner line permit, can the same be discarded and reapplied online ….as we are a group of 19 people there is no issue as to registration restriction as on site.

I do not think it will let you try to register again but you can try. If it does not work, only other option then would be to obtain the permits in person from DM office Leh

Thank you Sir.

You are welcome brother !!!

' src=

Varghis Bhai,

if we apply for ILP for 1-2 specific region or all the regions (8 options) as per http://lahdclehpermit.in ..

is it going to cost differently ? if the cost is same, Y not to apply for the all the options.??

or it is just based on number of days of stay ?

Himanshu Bhai it is based on number of days and not places. You can apply for all of them but then will have to count days accordingly to cover all

Hello sir I am planning for a road trip So can i borrow my friends vehicle for the trip Is there is a need of him to be present at the same time at the check post as he is not travelling with us. So sir pls kindly help me with the same. As i had came to heard that the car owner needs to be present with the car wherever the check points demands. And i want to get an idea that can i get the inner line permit by reaching at leh itself. As i am departing from mumbai on 05th of this week. Pls sir kindly revert me as soon as possible Thankyou sir

Hi Nikhil – If you are borrowing a friends bike, then you can use it only to reach Leh. From there, you will have to rent another local bike for visiting places like Nubra and Pangong.

' src=

You are welcome Bhai

Hello vargis bhai…..you have covered each and every corner of leh ladakh in your blog and we need not to go any where. We completely rely on you and your blog…Thanks bhai dil se for such hardwork and dedication to help people like us…….stay blessed and keep writing and motivating people to travel like this….

I want to cover khardungla, diskit, hunder, surmur, panamik, turtuk, pangong lake and tso moriri in my coming leh trip. So while filling inner line permit should I write “khardungla, diskit, hunder, surmur, panamik, turtuk, pangong lake and tso moriri ” as such or should I write some in between places also (which I do not know)so that I do not want face any problem at any check post bcoz someone told me that we need to write each and every stop of our itinerary during filling the form.

Thanks Harry Bhai for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

Just write khardungla, diskit, hunder, surmur, panamik, turtuk, pangong lake and tso moriri. This will do.

Hi Vargis Bhai, I was wondering if Hanle, Umling La permit is available this year or not?

Sanat Bhai Umling La is definitely off-limits. Permits for Hanle however are being issued.

Got to support the army’s decision! Thanks for the info, bhai!

You are right Sanat Bhai !!!

' src=

hi vergis bhai, agr me permit apply karte time no of days na select krke only apni date mention kr du jitne din me udr rhne wala hu or sare rato pr tick krke print nikal lu to koi problem hogi kya??? qki merko smjh nai aa rha no of days kitne select kru isliye date mention nai kri.

Shiv Bhai agar filhal sure nahi ho toh online mat lo. Leh jakar hi le lena. Ye online wala option vaise bhi sirf form bharne ki formality hai. Aapko anyways vahan DC office ki taraf toh jaana padega hi payment karne aur stamp karvane ke liye toh vahin jaake on the spot hi form bhi bhar lena. Isko abhi bharoge toh print out nikalna padega aur phir Leh jaane tak vo print out sambhal kar saath leke ghoomna padega.

ok thnx bhai.

Dear Vargis Bhai, I am amazed at the wonderful work that you are doing. Congrats and I am sure you will be rewarded well for this. I and my wife are taking a road trip to Leh in May. I need your views on our itinerary. We are keen to see traditional Ladakh lifestyle and villages along with the natural and toursity places. We are driving on our Maruti SX4 (Hope this is a good choice). Our tentative itinerary is like this: 6th May- Delhi- Jalandhar/ Ludhiana (We can leave by noon only) 7th May- Ludhiana/ Jalandhar to Patnitop 8th May- Patnitop- Srinagar 9th May- Stay/ Sightseeing in Srinagar 10th May- Srinagar- Kargil 11th May- Kargil- Leh 12th- 18th Leh/ Ladakh 19th May- Reach Manali 20th May- Manali- Delhi Now the help that I want from you is we have 12th May to 18th May in Ladakh and we need to reach Manali by 19th May. Can you suggest an itinerary where we can see some traditional places/ meet local communities and also see the best of places? I also heard about an Aryan village. I am not sure where it is. I would be really grateful to you for your support. Thanks Kailash

Hello Kailash Bhai,

Thank you for your kind words. You can travel like this but it also depends on whether or not the Manali route is open by your date of travel.

12 – Leh. Rest and arrange permits. 13 – Leh to Turtuk (Nubra valley) 14 – Turtuk to Panamik 15 – Panamik to Pangong via Shyok road 16 – Pangong to Pang 17 – Pang to Jispa 18 – Jispa to Manali 19 – Manali to Delhi 20 – Buffer. Keep this day in buffer because there are permit issues for Shyok route right now. In case you do not get this permit, You will have to come back to Leh from Nubra valley and go to Pangong the next day.

And yes, you can do the trip in SX4 but be careful around water crossing and slushy areas.

Thank you for the details Vargis bhai. Turtuk looks really interesting. A huge thanks for this. I read your blogs carefully and saw the detailed map that you have made, It is very useful. I have become your fan :-). I still have a few queries on your suggested route. 1. In your blog ( https://vargiskhan.com/log/agham-shyok-road/ ) you write that the Agham- Shyok road from Panamik to Pangong is really treacherous. The blog is from 2016. Are the roads still the same? If that is the case, wouldn’t it be better to return to Leh and take the alternative route? 2. Pangong to Pang- do I take the route via Karu or via Chushul/ Mahe/Sumdo/ Thukje? 3. If we don’t go to Tso Moriri, are we missing something great? Or is it the same as Pangong? 4. Is it a good idea to stay at Hermis (either near the Gompa or in the adjoining National Park)- Are there any places to stay inside the park? 5. Are the fuel stations that you have mentioned in your map the only ones even now or have any new stations been added? Am really excited to go on the trip. Kailash

Thanks Kailash Bhai.

1. Towards the end of that page, I have posted a more recent picture of the road. It is not that dangerous anymore. 2. Chushul route you cannot take this year. Permits are not being given. 3. No, not missing something too great. 4. I have not been to the park so cannnot really advise on this. 5. Please take a look at the post below.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/fuel-availability-in-leh-ladakh-manage/

Vargis Bhai, unfortunately I had to postpone my trip. Is July 1st week a good time to travel with the same itinerary? And would it be ok to drive the whole way?

Hi Kailash Bhai, Yes July is a good time and you can definitely drive all the way.

Thank you Vargis Bhai. Excited to go.

Dear Mr, Vargis Khan,

Hope you’re doing well.

Thank you for all the insight and the detail narrative of each subject one needs to know before planning for their Ladakh trip.

My name is Pruthvi Shankar, from Bengaluru, presently working in Bahrain. We are 9 cousins & friends, making a circuit road trip via Delhi-J&K-Leh-Manali-Delhi route, from June 15 to 24.

We have made most of our bookings for the accommodations at all our halts, however, you’re mention regarding the uncertainty of inner line permits via shyok & chushul routes took us by surprise, as we have made our plans assuming the inner line permits thro these routes. We will be travelling in 2 Selfi-driven SUVs from Delhi. So could you please throw some light on how we can make the below plan work.

June 18 : Kargil – Leh 19th : Leh – Nubra 20th : Nubra – Pangong tso(Merak) 21st : Merak – Hanle 22nd : Hanle – Sarchu

Since all our bookings are already made could you please confirm the probability of getting the inner line permits for shyok & chushul routes, and feasible alternate routes to follow our plans, if incase the permits are not issued..

Thank you in advance,

Hello Mr. Sira,

Permits for Shyok road are being issued and it will most probably remain open. Chushul route however is definitely off limits right now. Situation may change by June though as the tourist season gets to its peak.

Thank you for the quick response, if the chushul route remains closed by june too, then which is the best alternate route to reach Hanle from Merak in a day..

You are welcome !!! There is no other route really. You will have to come back to Leh and then reach Hanle via Chumathang.

Dear Mr. Khan,

I was just wondering if you have got any update on the status of Chushul route, is the permit being issued now, or is it expected to be open anytime soon.

Hello Mr. Sira, Those permits are still not being issued unfortunately.

' src=

Hi Vargis, what kind of permit is this. Like to enter in the state of j&k we need permit or to enter particular area of ladakh we need permit. and more question. Month may is good for travel ladakh. and is there need of permission to put tent in trip to ladakh

Hi Shashank – This permit is needed to travel to inner areas of Ladakh from Leh City. May is good for going to Ladakh and no, you do not need a permit for setting up your tents

' src=

We are planing to start from Manali (to Srinagar). In that case can i get the inner line permit from Manali as i can take turn the rout from Pang to TSO Moriri and then Chushul ..??

Suman Bhattacharjee 9874220006 Kolkata

No, for Inner Line permit you will have to go to Leh first. You cannot get these in Manali.

' src=

Hi We are group of four. is it possible to obtain inner line permit for group in one go (ladhak Area).

Yes, you will mention the name of the all the travelers on same application form and get it done in one go while you are in Leh. Online you will have to submit separately but in person it is just one application.

' src=

Thank you Bhai for quick reply, really appreciate your dedication for fellow travelers.

With thes changes can you please help me how to plan trip from Nubra to Pangong and then to Tso Moriri. As we are coming from Shrinagar highway and will end trip from Manali. And as suggested by you earlier we planned trip to Hanle as well.

Chushul route will remain open. The only change will be that if Hanle is not allowed than you will go straight from Pangong to Karzok via Chshul. The stay at Hanle will then have to be taken off the itinerary. That is the only change.

Hi Vargis Bhai,

Me and friend are planning to hire bike from Chandigarh. We are planning to take Srinagar – Kargil route to reach Leh. Do we need ILP for this route?

Thanks, Manish

Manish Bhai ILP is required to visit areas in Ladakh, like Nubra, Pangong, and Tso Moriri. No permit is needed to travel on Srinagar Leh or Manali Leh highway.

I would like to thank you for all the detailed information you provide us for a comfortable ride, much appreciate it.

We are a group of 3 riders and planning a trip to Leh through Shrinagar and exit the circuit through Manali to Delhi. Could you please have a look at our itinerary below and suggest if it is doable and provide your valuable suggestions. Also, we want to cover most of the places, so please kindly add if we have missed to cover any place that we should cover.

Hello Harsh Bhai,

Thank you for your kind words. Which month you are traveling in by the way and I am assuming you are bringing your own bikes, correct? I will recommend a journey in the following manner so you can cover maximum.

1. Haldwani to Delhi 2. Delhi to Jammu 3. Jammu to Srinagar 4. Sriangar to Kargil 5. Kargil to Padum (Zanskar Valley) 6. Padum to Kargil 7. Kargil to Leh 8. Leh, rest and arrange permits 9. Leh to Diskit 10. Diskit to Pangong via Shyok road 11. Pangong to Hanle 12. Hanle to Karzok (Tso Moriri) 13. Karzok to Pang / Sarchu via Tso Kar 14. Pang/Sarchu to Manali 15. Manali to Delhi 16. Delhi to Haldwani

Keep a day as buffer as well if you can.

Thabkyou Bhai for your detailed itinerary, we will definitely plan as sufsuggesby you. Yes we are traveling on our own Enfields. We have planned to start trip from 25 May, so will it be good time to travel? And should we expect snow on roads at that time and do we need to take any ascessories that. Thank you for your advice in advance.

You are welcome Bhai. 25th May is good since you are traveling from Srinagar side. Chances of snow will be less though as it anyways did not snow much this year. You may find some at top of the passes though.

Dear Vargis Bhai,

I need to know if the rumors that Agham Shyok rout and Hanle route is banned for 2018 true?

Please guide us as it will badly hamper the trip plan and we would need your help in replanning the trip itinerary.

Thanks Bhai in advance.

Harsh Bhai Shyok road will remain open but Hanle and Umling La may not be allowed. More clarity on this will only come in coming few weeks.

Hi Vargish bhai, Need to know whether Kaza to Keylong route will be open this year after 25th of May’18. our Tentetive Itenary is below..kindly suggest modification if any. we r 5 friends travelling on bike from Chandigarh.

24th May’18: On bike Start at 11 am from Chandigarh to Narkanda(stay) 25th: Narkanda to Kalpa via sangla, Chitkul.(stay at kalpa) 26th: Kalpa to Tabo via Nako. (stay at Tabo) 27th: Tabo to Kaza. visit Kibber, komick, Lanchang etc. (stay at Kaza) 28th: Kaza to Keylong/jispa..kindly suggest whether we can go upto sarchu same day. 29th: Reach Leh. Rest 30th: leh local. (places whr no ILP is required). Get ILP in morning. (Stay at leh). 31st: Leh-Khardungla-Diskit-Hunder-nubra. (stay at nubra). 1st june’18: Nubra to Pangong Tso.(kindly suggest direct route). (stay at Pangong Tso). 2nd: Pangong to Karu/Leh. Rest 3rd: Leh/Karu to Keylong/jispa. stay. 4th: Reach Manali. Stay. 5th: Reach Chandigarh & get Bike Parceled to Surat.

Above is my tentative itenary. My only concer is whether road from Kaza to Keylong will be operational by that time. bcoz it has snowed less this year so chances r there that it will open by end of may. we have not booked any stay. kindly suggest if we need to book. also we r carrying our own Tent also along with other required accessories as we are going completely unplanned. so it will not be an issue if we have to add some days in between or end. kindly revert with any your valuable experienced suggestions.

Hi Ujjval Bhai, In all probability the route should be open because there is very little snow this year. The actual opening date however will only be clear by May only. For your itinerary,

24th – Good 25th – Cannot do it. You will have to spend the night at Chitkul only. Even for Chitkul, ensure that you take an early morning start from Narkanda or it may get dark by the time you reach there. 26 – Do not stay at Tabo. Stay at Nako, much more scenic than Tabo. 27 – Do not go towards Kibber Kaumik the same day. you will not be able to cover. Stay at Kaza the day you reach there and plan a ride to these villages the next day. Will eat up your entire day if you cover all of them. 28 – Even Keylong will be a very long ride. The Batal Gramphoo stretch is a nightmare and that small distance will easily eat up your 4-5 hours. Do not attempt Sarchu. 29 – Keylong to Leh you can complete in a day but ensure you start by first light of the day, possibly between 5-6 AM. 30 – OK 31 – Stay at Diskit 1 – Take the Agham Shyok road to reach Pangong. See the link below for route details.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/agham-shyok-road/

2 – Ok. If you do not find a place at Karu then go to Pang and stay there for the night. Do not come back to Leh. 3 – Ok 4 – Ok 5 – Ok. For transporting motorcycles see the link below.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/transport-motorcycle-by-train-india/

No need to book anywhere, you will get plenty of choices to chose from and can negotiate a deal on the spot. You must however add more days to your trip. Let me know if you can and I will recommend an itinerary accordingly.

Thanks a lot….V vl start on 24th may frm Chandigarh…and planning to book a flight to Surat on 7th june early mrng frm Delhi. So u can suggest ur itenary as well. Also let me kno whether it vl be good to return via Srinagar and our bike parcel from jammu. I think it will save our day.

Ujjval Bhai I will recommend traveling iin the following manner.

24 – Narkanda 25 – Kalpa 26 – Chitkul 27 – Nako 28 – Kaza 29 – Keylong (Long journey) 30 – Leh (Long journey) 31 – Leh 1 – Nubra Valley 2 – Pangong via Shyok road 3 – Leh 4 – Kargil 5 – Srinagar 6 – Jammu

Hello Vargis bhai!

I have made our final itinerary after going through info given by you in your site. what a site! awsm!! Pls have a look at my itinerary:- June 17 Madurai – Delhi (flight) June 18 Delhi – Leh (flight) Leh – Magnetic Hills (bike) June 19 Leh -Khardang La – Nubra Valley – Leh (bike)

June 20 Leh- Pangong Tso (bike)

June 21 Pangong Tso – Leh (bike) Leh – Srinagar (Bus) June 22 Srinagar Srinagar – Amrister (flight) June 23 Amrister – Wahab Amrister – Delhi (flight) June 24 Delhi – Madurai (flight) please suggest any alteration needed in above itinerary or not. Thank u and regards………. Siva from madurai, tamilnadu.

Hello Siva Bhai,

A few changes will be required in your itinerary.

1. You will land on 18th, will need to find hotel, arrange permits and on top of it, you will also be suffering from AMS in all proability. It will be a bit tough to rent a bike on this day and go towards magnetic hill. My suggestion would be that you just arrange your permits and bikes and rest at the hotel, allowing your body time to acclimatize to high altitude.

2. Leh to Nubra Valley to Leh will be a very long journey so ensure that you start from Leh by first light of the day.

3. Srinagar bus starts early in the morning from Leh so you will not be able to board it on 21st, the same day that you are returnign from Pangong. It would have to be done on 22nd and then you will arrive at Sriangar on 23rd

Pls have a look at my itinerary:- Day2- Srinagar- Kargil Day 3- Kargil – Leh Day 4 – Leh Day 5- Leh – Nubra Valley Day 6- Nubra Valley – Pongong lake (Via Shyok road) Day 7- Pongong Lake- Leh Day 8- Leh – Batalik Day 9 Batalik – Srinagar

Now, first of all, please suggest any alteration needed in above itinerary or not. Next, Please tell me all the places for which i need to take ILP for the given itinerary. I dont want to be sent back from any check post.

Thanks bhai.

Forgot to add that my Day 2 starts on 26th May 2018 and am willing to reach Leh by JKSRTC bus or shared taxi.

Hello Suman – Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate it.

The only problem with the itinerary is,

1. There is no public transport available on Agham Shyok road. You will have to ask around at Nubra Valley and see if you can find a mode of transport. Most probably it will be hitch hiking with someone going that way. If you are not able to find anything, you will have to come back to Leh and go to Pangong the next day.

2. Same thing for Batalik route. There is public transport available here but the frequency is too less.

You will need permits for Nubra, Pangong and Batalik.

Thanks bhai. We ‘ll be taking either shared taxi or private one for tour onwards Leh. I hope that’s available from Leh. Can you provide info on how much it costs if we take private taxi from Leh keeping our itinerary in mind? Also, only three places, as u said, I have to mention in form for ILP? No in-between villages? What to write in place of staying? We’ve not finalised any hotels for staying and want to book same after arrival. Pls enlighten. Thanks once again for your help.

Do not apply for the permit online Bhai. It is merely a form to fill as you will anyways have to go to DC office for payment and stamping etc. Get it all done only after you reach Leh. On the form you will there, mention the Diskit, Hunder, Pangong and Batalik.

Private taxi costs are quite high in Ladakh. A 2 day journey to Nubra valley easily costs about Rs. 12000 and same applies for Pangong as well. Call Sonam Angdus in Leh at 9469272773. He is a driver and has his own taxi, a known of mine. Let him know you got his number from me and he can give you the exact cost with a discount applied. If it suits you, hire him. He is a good driver and a humble fellow.

No need to book hotels in advance. Just reach there, find a hotel per your liking and negotiate a on the spot deal.

Hi Vargis, You really have a very informative blog here. Actually, I am planning to visit in the last week of February, 2018. I just have 4 days so I am taking a flight to Leh and then exploring the surroundings. I don’t want to miss Khardung La and Pangong lake. Is there any way we could do this with some additional places in 4 days. Also, I need some pointers about the bike rentals (preferrably Royal Enfield) in Leh. Thanks, Deven

One more question, if I am renting a bike from Leh itself, do I really need an ILP?

Yes you will need ILP even if renting a bike in Leh itself. The permit is on per person basis and not vehicle. Even if you took a bus, you will still need to get the permit.

Hi Deven – Take a look at this article, should be of help for a 4 days trip.

https://vargiskhan.com/log/visit-leh-ladakh-in-4-days/

There are no bike rentals available in Feb. It is not even safe or suggested to be riding around a motorcycle there with so much snow and freezing temperatures. You will have to rent a private cab.

Hello khan saahab..

We are 2 friends travelling to ladakh. I’m trying to apply online for permits.. But there is no option to add other persons name. So do we need to apply separately for two peoples?

Hello Atul – Correct. It needs to be applied seperately for different people, no way to add names. Every person my enter their own ID number. Actually, the online portal right now is just filling out forms, nothing else. You will anyways have to visit the office in Leh to make payment and get it signed / stamped. Just reach there and fill out the form in person.

hi..we are 11 of us planning to visit Leh via srinagar by car. we will be visiting nubra valley and pangong lake. and we are going back to delhi via manali. Now can you please guide us as to 1. which are the places we have to mention in Leh for the innerline permit and 2. if we are going to delhi via sarchu, rohtang, manali.. should we get permit in that route also. and where do we get the permit for rohtang and manali

Hello, It depends on how long your plan is. Just mention the places below and it will pretty much cover both Nubra and Pangong.

Khardung La, Diskit, Hunder, Turtuk, Panamik, Spangmik, Man, Merak

No permit needed for Leh to Manali journey.

hi I have planned for aug 29 till sept 1st . Will be reaching there by fight. Please let me know when can I apply for and for how many day I have to apply for. We are around 3 people. Also if someone can suggest where to go except pangong as it would be the first time:-)

' src=

Anil…3-4 days in Ladakh is too scant. I don’t think you can go anywhere else except Pangong and a local sightseeing of Leh. You can do a day trip to Nubra but be sure to leave Leh by max 5.30 AM in the morning.

Anil – What Akashdeep said stands true. You can apply for the permits on the day you land in Leh, and then do a day trip to both Nubra and Pangong. Going all that way just for 3 days doesn’t make sense really. Either add more days or plan your trip for a later time.

Hi Vargis Sir, So do we need to pay at SDM office after applying online? And its open Monday to Friday only ? And can I Travel from Nubra to Pangong directly ? Or I will have to come to Leh for Petrol I will travel on bike pls. Guide

' src=

Hi, I am just back from Ladakh trip and I think now I am in better place to answer regarding the permit issues. The online thing doesn’t help much as it only the form filling thing that you can do online. The queue is for verification and it still remain the same either you do online or offline. My only suggestion is to try to get the permit early in the morning when the queue is less. Also, the permit is now given next to the tourist info centre in the main bazaar.

Is TIC office open on Saturday?

Hi prithvi, Is chushul route possible to reach tso moriri from pangong..? It’s not mentioned in the online list.. we are planning to go by September end.

Chushul permits are not on the online portal. For that you will have to visit the DM office in person in Leh.

Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information Prithvi Bhai

And regarding nubra to pangong direct, yes you can do that if get your fuel filled at diskit in nubra. Also carry additional fuel in cans as all bikers do

Hello Vargis,

I have a confusion on dates. For the first step, there’s a date of entering and you say there’s details of dates to be given in the second step as well. So, for example, if I enter Leh on 1st July but venture out for permit oriented areas on 3rd July and plan to come back to Leh on 9th July then what should I put on the first and second pages. Also, is there a time span restriction (like 1 week max) for permit duration in the website.

Hello Akashdeep, Enter dates when you plan to go towards restricted areas. There is no ILP required for Leh so you can skip those days. Permits are valid for 3 weeks from the issue date.

I got shocked that probably I closed the Tab for payment until this article reconfirmed that there was no option for payment yet!!

No there is no option to pay online yet. That would have to be done after you reach Leh.

It depends on your itinerary Shyam Bhai. How long are you planning to stay there?

Sir Day 1-leh to Hinder (stayed in hinder) Day 2-hunder to leh Shall I enter 2 days or 1 day for Nubra valley on online ILP?

Enter 2 days

Thanks brother

You are welcome Bro !!!

Thanks for this blog. I tried to get the permit with my Aadhar card number and had same issues that you have mentioned. I have to get it through my passport or DL again :D.. We will be entering Leh via Srinagar highway and were planning to directly visit Zanskar valley enroute Kargil and then Leh. Do we need the permit to visit either Zanskar or Kargil? Please shed some light on it!

Hi Prithviraj, Thank you for your appreciating words brother. No permit needed for either Zanskar or Kargil. Do let me know how the online permit thing worked while you reached Leh, it will be good to get some clarification that I can add here to help others.

' src=

Hey Prithvi were you able to make the payment upon reaching leh or you got permit from there only?

' src=

Hi vargis, First thanks for the info that you have provided in your blog, it helped me a lot in planning my trip.

The query that i have is that what are the various permits that I will required and which one can be applied online. and if I am travelling on july 1st when should i apply, I am travellling from delhi to manali to leh. after reaching leh I will be travelling to kargil, Nubra velly, Pangong Thanks.

Hi Gaurav – If you are traveling via Manali, then the first permit you need is to cross over Rohtang. After reaching Leh, you will then need to obtain Inner line permit to visit Nubra Valley and Pangong.

thanks Vargis, for crossover permit do I have to make advance arrangement or I will get it when I reach there

You can get it from Manali SDM office upon your arrival or online as well.

' src=

Hi Vargis, i filled in the online permit however it gave no option to add the names of other people in the group. Does each person need to fill in this form separately? Any idea? Thanks

Hi Neha – Yes, every individual have to submit it with their IDs because even at the time of getting the permits in Leh, everyone was required to submit a copy of their ID proofs.

Do we require special permits? Would you be taking care of the permits?

Ladakh Inner Line Permit

Indian nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) o visit some of the protected areas in Ladakh. It is only required for some areas like Nubra Valley, Khardung La, Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri, Dah, Hanu Villages, Man, Merak, Nyoma, Loma Bend, Turtuk, Tyakshi, Chusul, Hanle, Digger La, Tangyar (for trekking only). Tourists from China, Pakistan, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong require a special permit from the Home Ministry to visit the region. All foreign nationals require a special permit when going through the Tso Moriri to Pangong Tso lake via Tsagala.

There is also a special permit needed for tourists who are travelling to Ladakh on an official or work visa. Go2Ladakh will obtain the ILP for you. All we would require is your documents and we can take things from there. For everything else, please carry a valid, government-issued photo ID proof and address proof, and photocopies of these documents. From khaltse through leh to upshi, the restriction is relaxed, to allow approach to the monasteries and villages on the northern highway such as tia-timosgang, rizong, likir and phyang. The leh-manali road is also open, up to one mile east of its general alignment.  Restricted area and inner line permit: some areas primarily opened for tourism since 1994 by the government. But to visit these areas you have to acquire the inner line permit. These permits are easy to obtain, often takes not more than half-a-day to arrange one. This can be obtained from the deputy commissioner’s office, leh only through registered travel agents, at a nominal fee. There are some condition to this permits. Individual tourist are not granted the permit , you need to be at least in a group of two or more. Each permit allows you for not more than 7 days in any particular restricted area.
