Andaman and Nicobar Islands Tourism And Travel Guide
If you’re craving for some sun, sand and some much needed relaxation, tourism in Andaman and Nicobar is exactly what you need. For those craving some action, there are numerous water sports at the islands which offer licensed courses in snorkeling and deep sea diving. The archipelago consists of close to 600 islands lying at the juncture of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. Out of these only 38 are inhabited and only 9 among them are accessible to tourists. Do keep in mind that foreign nationals would require a Restricted Area permit to visit these islands. The same can be attained on arrival if travelling via air and has to be done beforehand if arriving by sea.
Apart from its beautiful beaches and water sports, Andaman and Nicobar Islands have a history of colonial occupation by the Danish, Austrians and the British. The islands became well known as the most stringent cellular jail during the British Raj, called Kaala Pani; a prisoner sentenced to the Andaman cellular jail was as good as dead. Today, the cellular jail is a docile tourist destination. Find about that and much more in this travel guide of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
How to Reach Andaman & Nicobar
Despite its geography and location, Andaman and Nicobar is well connected with the rest of India as well as neighbouring countries of Indonesia, Malaysia , Sri Lanka , and others.
Veer Savarkar airport at Port Blair has direct flights to all major metropolitan cities of India. Though it does not have any direct international flights, the isles can be easily accessed from any of India's metropolises - Delhi , Mumbai , Chennai , Kolkata , Bengaluru , etc.
While the journey to Andaman and Nicobar will be a long one via maritime routes, it is still an experience that some travellers would want to check off their bucket lists. While a ship from Kolkata would take around 66 hours to reach the islands, ships from Chennai would take about 60 hours while from Vizag (Vishakhapatnam) would take up to 56 hours. This route though longer is more suited for the adventurous and those on a shoestring budget.

Things to do in Andaman & Nicobar
Cellular Jail:
Today a National Memorial monument, the central jail was used during the British Raj to exile political prisoners. Made in a way that there was no way for a cell inmate to see any other human, the sentence to Kaala pani was equivalent to a death sentence, albeit, a slower and more torturous one. The museum today has photographs of inmates and will take you through a journey of our freedom struggle.
Havelock Island:
The largest island of Ritchie’s archipelago and arguably the most beautiful of them all, Havelock has been promoting eco-tourism since a while now. With its pristine beaches and beautiful coral reefs, the island is a hot-spot for water sports.
Scuba Diving and Snorkeling:
One of the most attractive features of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, tourists can enjoy the underwater world of marine flora, corals and fish. Some of the islands famous for scuba, snorkeling, deep sea walking, etc. are Neil Island , Long Island, Baratang Island (also known for its limestone caves), Ross Island , etc.
With its ever growing colourful coral reefs, pristine blue waters and white sands, the untouched beaches here will leave you craving for more as you depart. Or, just like us, you might even want to get your travel permit extended for another fortnight! Do remember to check out the schedule for fairs and festivals on the island through their official website ( http://www.andamans.gov.in/html/festivals.html ) before making your itinerary.

I booked a tour package for Andamans for 3 people. Our tour operator was Eternal Andamans. We booked a 4 day Luxury package covering Port Blair, Havelock and Neil island. On every point it has not only met with our expectations but also exceeded it. Cost : Reasonable cost without compromising on Quality at all. Transport : A spacious car for just the 3 of us was arranged by the tour operator. Xylo XUV, Ford Figo were deployed solely for our transportation. It felt really nice! Cruise tickets (hefty fees) were covered under the package. Accomodation : Eternal Andamans provided best in class luxurious hotels.
I have traveled Andaman with family in Sep 2019. Eternal Andaman is a wonderful tour operator with friendly people, they take limited tourists in a week. We made a customized package with the information we gathered online, made sure every hour is well spent in Andaman, all thanks to Sandip and his team. Surprisingly I got some money returned from Eternal Andaman guys as they couldn't get promised cruise tickets mentioned in the quotation (I got different cruise which is also good). I have traveled earlier also but never seen any operator returning money due to booking different hotel/transport than promised one, this is rare. Overall we had a memorable trip :) :)

Andaman & Nicobar Islands are among the most stunning places one can visit in India. Located off the Indian mainland, the destination is apt for those looking for some sun, sea and sand. So, if you are planning a trip, here’s the only travel guide you need to know about the place and how to reach – by air, road, water and train. By Anushka Goel
About Andaman & Nicobar Islands
The union territory is located off the Indian mainland, at the junction of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea . The archipelago consists of about 572 islands, of which 37 are inhabited. The chain of islands also consists of a live volcano, the Barren Islands, which is the only active volcano in India.
The island cluster is also a popular tourist destination. With clear white sand beaches, coral reefs, water activities such as snorkelling and more, the island destination is definitely heaven for those looking for a Maldivian vacation in India. Among the most popular food available will be seafood, and the place, with its tropical climate, makes for a great travel destination to escape the freezing North Indian winters.

The Port Blair airport is well-connected with major Indian cities, such as Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai, among others. The flight, over two hours, takes one over the Indian mainland and the seas, before landing at the airport, surrounded by lush greenery and clear, tropical skies .
The second most accessible route for reaching Andaman & Nicobar Islands is by water. Ships operate from Kolkata as well as Chennai, and take between two and three days to reach the archipelago. The cruise is filled with clear skies, cool breeze and vast sea views, and will make for a unique travel experience.
By Road and Train
The archipelago is not connected to the Indian mainland by road or train. So, in case you want to turn this trip into a road adventure, reach Kolkata or Chennai via road/trains (these operate from most major cities and smaller towns), and then hop aboard a ship or a flight that will take you to the island cluster.

Among the most popular spots to visit in Andaman & Nicobar Islands is the Cellular Jail . Earlier known as Kala Paani, the jail was where the British sent Indian prisoners who they wanted to torture. With limited connectivity, sea all around and a tough escape, this jail was indeed the torture chamber for prisoners. Even though it has a dark, gory history, the place today is a must-visit for those who want a slice of history.

The archipelago is home to several islands, complete with serene beaches, an unspoken calmness and some of the most stunning views. From Havelock to Neil Island, Vipers Island and more, be sure to check out as many of these as you can, and spend time soaking in the tropical sun as you sip on a tender coconut or some beer.
Coral Reefs

The coral reefs in these islands are beautiful, and provide life to a variety of exotic marine creatures. You can see these stunning reefs when in the Andamans, through glass-bottomed boats, and with activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving.

Visit Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India
- Accommodation
Only a dozen of the 300 plus islands that make up the Andaman Islands are open to visitors. The rest are strictly off-limits to protect indigenous tribes, some of whom have had little or no contact with the modern world. Some 1,370 km (852 miles) from mainland India, the archipelago is closer to Indonesia , sporting azure waters and fine sandy beaches usually associated with Southeast Asia .
You’ll need to invest a little time in getting here — flying to mainland India for a night before catching a domestic flight to Port Blair, the islands’ administrative capital. After a night here you can catch a boat to your chosen hotel. As one of the few who bother to make the journey to these far-flung islands, you’ll be rewarded with miles of empty beaches and untouched primeval jungle.
The Andaman Islands may take a while to get to, but it’s worth the effort. The laid-back pace of the islands allows time to relax completely, wander the secluded beaches and snorkel.
Things to see and do on the Andaman Islands
Get away from it all on havelock island.
Twenty-five tents, cottages and villas are set within the deciduous forest that runs alongside a stretch of undeveloped beach. The wood to build each villa was sourced from plantations in Indonesia to avoid harvesting the native tropical forest.
Each villa and cottage has a private courtyard facing the forest, set far enough apart to feel completely secluded. It’s a comfortable, rustic stay with your rooms kitted out in bamboo furniture and weaved palm leaves covering the walls.
Diving in the Andaman Islands
Many visitors travel to the Andaman Islands for the diving alone. The waters have never been heavily fished, leaving the marine life to flourish. Dive schools on Havelock Island provide full PADI courses, as well as leisure dives for more experienced divers. There are enough dive sites to keep the most experienced diver busy for weeks, including a 55 m (180 ft) wall of coral and the SS Inchket, a wrecked cargo vessel.
There are healthy coral gardens spread along the archipelago, providing fertile breeding grounds for manta rays, turtles and speckled grouper. Nudibranchs (psychedelic sea slugs) and shrimps scuttle along the sea floor. Time your dive well and you might spot a dugong, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands' state animal.
Take a nature walk through primeval jungle
More than 200 tree species have been recorded on the islands, spread across deciduous forest, mangroves and primeval jungle. On Havelock Island, walking trails and paths criss-cross between the trees, leading from the beaches to the dense interior greenery.
You can take a short walk from your hotel or arrange for a guide to take you deeper inland. Bearded pigs and geckos are a common sight, and you might also spot serpent eagles and the occasional woodpecker.
Sea kayak to explore the Andaman Islands
With few roads on the islands, the best way to explore is from the sea. Accompanied by a guide, you can paddle through the calm waters of the mangroves or ride the waves of the open ocean.
From the seat of a kayak it’s possible to see parts of the coast that are closed off to visitors, preserving their natural beauty. The jungle often reaches right up to the sea, which means you might sight the occasional hornbill — although you’ll usually hear it first.
Best time to visit the Andaman Islands
Visit from December to April and you can enjoy clear skies and temperatures averaging 30°C (86°F). In May and June, the weather gets quite hot and humid. July through to September is best avoided due to heavy rain (many hotels close at this time). If you’re happy with a few showers, October to November is a great-value time to travel.
Festivals, events and seasonal reasons to visit
- For the best possible diving experience, visit in February and March when the waters are at their clearest and calmest.
- As it’s difficult to experience a festival on the Andaman Islands, it’s worth considering extending your trip to mainland India. Holi, celebrated in March, announces the arrival of spring with the throwing of vibrant powder, while Diwali, the festival of light, occurs in November.

So the first time I went there it was with my family for a 9 day-long trip. Many of you might correlate our parent's idea of a vacation? The trip was about seeing as many sights as possible in 9 days (basically, " sab cover kar lenge" ). Then I had seen most of Andaman, save North Andaman. My dad, being quite adventurous, included a few destinations in our itinerary where hardly any tourists go (check out Parrot Island and Mayabunder . Only 2 tourist families in December peak season). In short, I had seen most of what Andaman had to offer during my first trip. But it was an easy trip then, all we had to do was give our plan to the driver when we arrived and from next day on we were all set. Where is the fun in that!
Here, I would like to tell about my latest experience which is yet another example of our bad planning but in the end it doesn't matter and you end up being a better traveller. When my friend called me telling about saying, "Hey, I'm getting a return ticket for Andamans for Rs. 7,500!" I didn't have to think twice. (Check the rates now I bet it's over 10,000 for 1 side) Remember this is early June we are talking about and these cheap tickets were for August end. Calls for long term planning with too many uncertainties involved. The very thought of being able to go to Andaman "again" was exhilarating.
Days refused to pass after we had booked the tickets. Given the lack of Paid Leaves at work it was a short trip of 5 days. Based on my past experience, I had devised an excellent plan for our limited time there.
Day 1 - Cellular Jail Day 2 - Wandoor Marine National Park Day 3 - A Short stop at Neil island and then to Havelock by afternoon Day 4 and half of 5 - Enjoy Havelock Day 5 - Back to Port Blair by night Day 6 - Back to Mumbai - perfect!
Mind you that was only on paper. During the 3 months, we had for planning this trip all we managed was booking a hotel in Havelock. Rest of the bookings? we saved for later. Plus, who cares to read reviews if you had already been there once? you are already a pro, right? Or you think you are. Anyway!
We left Mumbai very early in the morning, and after changing a flight in Chennai , arrived at Port Blair by noon. Took an auto rickshaw and asked him to take us to a nice budget hotel nearby main market area. So he took us to Guru International . Nice rooms, very convenient location with every convenience facility within a 1 km radius + just Rs. 1500 per night, although we got this price after some bargain. After getting to the room, we managed to get a permit and tickets to Wandoor Marine National Park from their office which was close to the hotel and closes by 2 pm. The Auto-wale bhaiya insisted on buying tickets for the ship to Havelock asap but my experience said it is easy to get the tickets why rush, so we spent the rest of the day sightseeing in Port Blair. Big mistake! Next day everybody kept telling us that it's a holiday so the ticket counter for Havelock will be closed, and there was no point in bothering about the tickets then. Another mistake, apparently the counter was open.
Kale Paani ki Saza a.k.a. Cellular Jail
Next day early morning at 7 AM, we left Port Blair on a rented bike (Rs.400 per day) for Wandoor which is 21km from Port Blair, had breakfast at a nice little shack on our way and reached there a little before time, and meanwhile, we checked out Wandoor beach and museum. The ferry leaves for Red Skin Island sharp at 9 am. (Wandoor Marine National park comprises of a bunch of tiny islands out of which Jolly Buoy and Red Skin is open for tourists, one at a time, with Jolly Bouy open only post-October). The moment we left foot on that island, the sight was unbelievable. A beach full of beautiful shells I had never seen before, that too bigger than my face in size! You can pay Rs. 500 extra to the divers there and they will take you for an amazing snorkelling session. You can spot amazing corals, strange fishes, octopuses and what not. According to me, Wandoor is a must-visit for everyone going to Andaman. After this beautiful experience, we decided to spend the rest of our day on some "unknown to us" beach. Andaman being a small island we thought it will be easy to find one. So we relied on local people for directions. Finally, we got to some beautiful but crocodile-infested area though couldn't tell what place it was. Lack of people around made us a little scared and we made a dash on our bike from there, and ultimately ended up exploring rural Andaman closely. On our way back found a lot of fancily dressed people going in the same direction. Out of curiosity, we followed them on our bike and got to attend Andaman Monsoon Festival where kids from all over Andaman and Nicobar were performing their traditional dance. It was one of a kind experience for us.
A massive seashell, bigger than a person's face!
The unexplored Andaman Landscape
The next day was toughest for us, with a plan to go to Havelock and no tickets, we sure were in trouble. Did we wake up at 4 AM hoping to get on 6.30 AM ship? Didn't happen. It was 5 AM in the morning and already you could see hundreds of people in line for tickets in front of the counter which opens at 9 am. It is difficult for travellers like us to get tickets on our own since travel agencies/hotels send their people to book tickets for tourists every morning. There are only government ships plying during the offseason. Best way to stay out of this hassle is to book Havelock tickets well in advance. Finally, after a lot of fight, we could get on a ship to Neil which they promised would also take us to Havelock. If it is your first time on a ship, don't just sit inside, get on the deck and enjoy the ride. If you are paying attention you might spot some flying fish (watch BBC life video for flying fish) in your way to Havelock. I have, during both my trips.
Again, in Havelock, we had booked budget Emerald Geko which offer basic bamboo hut right on the beach (price Rs. 1500 per night including breakfast). Emerald Geko was one of the best parts of this trip.
The Bamboo Huts
It has an open beach facing restaurant-cum-shack where everybody gets together in the evening to chat. We met Russians, Canadians, Spaniards and Americans, and surprisingly we were the only Indians staying there. Another good part about Emerald Geko is they don't offer alcoholic drinks. So you can buy cheap beer from outside and enjoy it in their restaurant with the delicious food they serve? win-win. Next morning we rented a bike there and went to Vijaynagar and Radhanagar beach es , did some more sightseeing. (Do check high tide timings before going) Radhanagar is one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia and is ranked 6 th on the list. A beach surrounded by lush green trees on one side, crystal blue water on the other and softest of sands, it ought to be most beautiful. During our stay in Havelock, the weather was cloudy with some shower (that's why they call it offseason, to enjoy the beach or scuba dive). Nonetheless, we enjoyed it to the fullest. And if you are interested they also offer "swimming with elephants" for Rs. 1700 per head at Radhanagar beach, a Spanish guy at the resort informed us. The rest of our time was spent on the private resort beach hanging out with other people there.
The mesmerizing Radhanagar Beach
Finally, the trip to Andaman was over, it was time to pack our bags and come home with a heavy heart full of amazing memories.
- If you are going all by yourself, book a ticket to Havelock and Wandoor Marine National Park the day you reach Port Blair.
- If you have a budget constraint don't go for fancy hotels in Port Blair instead spend generously in Havelock. Do not rely on the people of Andaman for the distance between 2 places, but you can't rely on GPS either as there will hardly be any network coverage.
- Plan a trip of 8 days at least.
