I loved the Gran Bali

I loved the Gran Bali, the staff were always eager to help and the place itself was stunning. Entertainment ran from the moment we woke up til we went to bed. The food was adequate - what you would expect for an all inclusive 4* if I’m honest but still enjoyable. We didn’t explore the whole of the hotel but what we did see was well worth the money. We will be back.

We were so delighted with the amazing service we received from cheeky trip when we booked our holiday to Spain with them. The service was outstanding, I called and spoke with a customer service rep and they helped me pick a hotel (I am very fussy but they were so good with me!). It was so much cheaper than we could find ourselves online so thank you so much for your amazing service. Infact it was so good that we’ve booked again with them!

ABSOLUTE SCAM!!! DO NOT BOOK WITH THESE COWBOYS!! I contacted CheekyTrip and dealt with Helen, who said someone call me back. No call !!! Will never book with these people again, paid for transfer and 3 of the 5 of us were not booked in properly! Had to pay for a taxi to other side of Spain, was told that it would be refunded same day, spent part of the holiday petrified that return transfer would be messed up too and we would miss our flights! I'm back in England now and still having to ring every day to try get my money back. Keep being fobbed off by different people. Off to Bulgaria September certainly will not be putting my holiday in their hands again.

Green Nature spa/resort marmaris.

Green Nature spa/resort marmaris. Just done a week here. Good points first, Amazing place the entertainment team does an amazing job and work very long hours. Rooms are kept very clean, basic, a kettle some tea and coffee also a fridge. Water daily. Always find something to snack on. Ice cream, cakes, drinks, tea and coffee. (The ice at the bars is clean) The food I thought was good, my oldest is a poor eater but always found something. My youngest loved it. If you are a single parent talk to others I found other people willing to chat and help. I met a family Ian Dixon and Caro Dixon ended up spending most of our nights and their last few days together. Again really helped with keeping the kids happy. The slides I fought were great, the pool guys kept on top of safety. Now the poor. While the food is great it's repetitive. I thought the snack bar was better at lunch times. Outside eating area needs something to to stop the fly's and bees coming in.. Sun loungers, being on my own with two kids I wanted to be next to the pool. But by 8am you had no chance. One morning people where down at 0500 so I found myself coming down at 0430 to get sun loungers. Personally I think the sun loungers should be stacked at night. Then given out in the morning or allocated to your room. Some people leave beer bottles at the pool side from the night before. To lazy to but in a bin. Staff are always cleaning up. Entertainment, as I have said the team work hard, while there is a kids club on till very late. The main entertainment is not till 10pm I think this is way to late. The reason for the late start, is the kitchen is open till gone 8pm. The last day some adult decided 💩 in the main pool it had to be closed for 24hrs. The WiFi is shocking forget it. Get a WiFi box Batman Holiday is your man. The shop on site has them but Batman's are better. They guy will drop if and collect a true gent. If you go down town leave your bank card at home mine was scanned while it was in my pocket and had money taken from my bank. Shops on site hairdressers and a tattooist a general shop too all good. All in all I would come back here a great week.

SCAM and then some...CheekyTrip.Com…

So I found a holiday on CheekyTrip.Com which was listed as £392 per person to Portugal for 7 days, baggage stated (Ryan Air) would be from £12 and transfers would be from £11. I rang the number given and spoke to a representative from god knows where who quoted me a price of £1499 and £35 per person for transfers and £90 per baggage per person. WOW.....WOW. Site deleted, phone numbers deleted, never ever will use this scam company \ site ever again.

Souvenir Shopping in Moscow: Izmailovsky Market

I have a list of things that I need to bring back from every country to complete our ‘Home Sweet Home’. Our abode has a Turkish lamp from Istanbul, an ostrich egg from South Africa, a carved wooden door from Zanzibar, bright red clogs from Netherlands, floor carpet from Oman, papyrus paintings from Egypt… the list goes on. It truly looks like a travellers house! Obviously, on the list was ‘Matryoshka Dolls from Russia’. Now that I was in Russia, I just had to pick up a set.

Kremlin at Izmailovsky

Shopping for the Maytryoshka dolls can be tricky…they start at Rub 50 and can cost as much as Rub 50,000!!! YES… Rubles fifty thousand! The cheaper ones are like toys and the expensive ones are works of art, with intricate designs and fine paintings. However, price is also drive by the location; souvenirs are really expensive in the city centre, especially near the Kremlin. So, if you want to get yourself a sweet deal, or buy in bulk to gift them to friends, you should head to Izmailovsky Market, which is famous for its souvenir market. The market is where the locals buy dolls, magnets, other souvenir items, scarves, fur etc in bulk and then, sell them to tourists at various places in the city centre.

Faberge Egg Souvenirs

Getting there?

Every local knows about the Izmailovsky market. However, don’t expect too much help from the locals as most Russians do not understand English. And let’s not forget, you are in Russia …and culturally, many Russians do not engage with a conversation with strangers.

The easiest way to get to the Izmailovsky market is by using the metro. It takes about 20 minutes from the city centre to Partizanskaya, which is the closest metro station to the market. You can then walk for about 5 minutes to the colourful building, which is the Izmailovsky Kremlin and houses the souvenir market.

The other option is to take an Uber, which will cost about Rub 400, but might it take you an hour or so to get there from the city centre. Moscow has crazy traffic!

What are the opening hours?

The market opens at 10:00 and the starts winding up by about 17:30. By 18:00, most stalls are closed. The market is most crowded, with the maximum number of sellers and buyers, on the weekends.

Souvenir market at Izmailovsky

What to buy?

I was at the market to buy dolls, and focussed my energies on the same. However, you can buy some great woollen garments and winter wear. There is porcelain from Russia and the CIS countries… pretty blue stuff, but very delicate and difficult to carry. There is also an entire market on paintings – nature, still life, monuments. And then, there is a flea market full of used stuff – kitchenware, clothes, artifacts, jewellery …lots and lots of knick knacks!

Paintings at the Izmailovsky market

What’s the price?

What else is around?

There is a small vodka museum at the Izmailovsky Kremlin where you can look at funky vodka bottles and sample some Russian vodka as well.

Fancy some vodka?

There there is a little church and there are buildings that seem to have popped out from candy land. There are a couple of coffee shops for you to grab a cup of coffee and a cookie.

There are quite a few restaurants serving vegetarian and meat based dishes in the area. The Best Western, Alpha and Delta hotels are nearby. Each has a couple of good restaurants with good quality food.

What did I do?

Luckily, I was staying at the Best Western in Izmailovsky, which is very close to this market. However, by the time I would get back to the hotel, it was 19:00 and the market was closed. I managed to visit the market only once, most days were spent in sight seeing, on my last evening in Moscow. How I wish I would have visited it earlier…or maybe multiple times!

I spent about 3 hours at the market, bargaining, shopping and clicking pictures. I got great value for money products and had a great time walking around the place. If you do intend to shop for souvenirs in Russia, make time for the Izmailovsky Market!

This is possibly the most beautiful and elaborate market I have ever seen. The russian dolls are so pretty. I used to have some as a kid

I had always seen them in pictures, and when i really saw the dolls, I couldnt control myself and bought so many!

Oh this looks like my kinda place to visit. I love exploring markets when on the road. I can believe that the dolls go up to 50,000 rub! I can’t even imagine the love and care that goes into each doll.

I love your collection of souvenirs, yet to visit so many places… wooden door ?? Please do share a post on Souvenir shopping from around the world 🙂 Vodka bottles looks good

Yeah…40 countries so far, and we have quite a bit in our house. Thanks for the idea…will work on that post and put it up shortly!

Oh this market looks so colorful and vibrant. I love those paintings, I think i need a whole day for this market. Vodka bottles doll shaped looks cool and good for gifting.

This market looks amazing! I love exploring markets when I’m travelling, and I’d want to spend a lot of time here too. I’ll have to keep it in mind if I make it to Moscow, which I hope to soon!

It is worth a lot of time, especially if you like to shop. Its a great place to get some really cool deals.

Markets are my favourite places to get lost when abroad! My grandmother brought back some matryoshka dolls from Russia when she visited St Petersburg when I was a little girl. they were definitely closer to 50 Rubles than 50,000! Not sure where exactly they are now but I want to find them again.

Whaaat?? The Matryoshka dolls can be THAT expensive?! My mother has 3, which were all given to her as gifts from Russian friends. I would love to visit Moscow one day. Is it true that they have Vladimir Putin souvenirs everywhere? Apparently there’s even chocolate shaped like him. Haha. Thanks for sharing this lovely guide to shopping at the market in Moscow 😀

Really love local markets Whenever I travel, I make It a point to visit the local markets, for souvenirs and if not anything just to observe the local fervour 🙂 Love the matryoshka dolls! Your post made me relive Russian fairytales 🙂 This place is so my kind! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I’m following your trail… Aman and I will be travelling in May 🙂

10 Sneaky Travel Scams That Too Many People Fall For

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

Travel scams seem to be increasingly common amid the rise of technological advancements like AI.

There’s nothing like a scam to put a damper on your hard-earned vacation. In this day and age, the opportunities for people to swindle you out of cash or steal your data seem to be endless.

“Travel scams have been around for decades. However, it’s safe to assume that there has been an increase in recent years as technology continues to advance,” Julian Moro , senior vice president and regional security director at International SOS, told HuffPost.

“Because of such technological advances, travelers are easier targets from the booking and planning process, all the way through the end of a trip. While travel scams have increased, the frequency and sophistication of cyber scams has also increased, as has broader awareness and healthy skepticism.”

Indeed, Booking.com’s safety expert reported in June there had been “anywhere from a 500 to a 900% increase” in travel scams over the past 18 months, driven by the rise of artificial intelligence.

“With AI, cybercriminals can scale very easily and at low costs,” said Ally Armeson , executive director of programs at the Cybercrime Support Network. “What used to take them hours now takes seconds, which allows these criminal networks to produce a greater number of less detectable scams.”

Your likelihood of encountering a scam and the nature of the fraud can depend on where you travel as well.

“Scams vary by country, so popular scams in one region might be different from another,” noted travel writer Matthew Kepnes , aka Nomadic Matt. “Fortunately, most scams won’t put you in harm’s way, rather, they’ll just cost you a few bucks and some embarrassment. That said, there are lots of scams out there that can break the bank and lead to you losing your wallet, phone, or other valuables.”

To help vacationers avoid these scenarios, we asked experts to outline some of the most common travel scams and what to look out for.

Fake Travel Document Websites

“One that we saw after the pandemic and certainly still hear about today are the fake travel documents websites,” said Amy Nofziger , the director of victim support at the AARP Fraud Watch Network.

Since many people didn’t travel for a year or two, they let their passports and TSA pre-check status expire. Once bans were lifted and vaccines became readily available, there was a surge in travelers seeking to travel abroad again — and thus needing up-to-date passports and more.

“Many people went online and found look-alike websites that claim to help you renew or enroll in the TSA PreCheck or the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Global Entry program that speed you through airport security for a fee,” Nofziger explained. “But these sites are actually trying to con you out of money and personal information.”

Verify that you’re only using legitimate services if you want external assistance with your travel documents, and otherwise try to go directly to the official government source for your needs.

Taxi Overcharge

“Be aware of a common and longstanding scam ― the taxi overcharge ― where the driver claims the meter is broken and tries to set a flat rate that is well over the typical rate,” Moro warned.

Don’t continue with your ride if a taxi driver says the meter is broken but not to worry because they’ll keep the price low.

“When you get where you’re going, the charge is high and you’re stuck because you’re afraid to get out and not pay, especially when the cabbie says they’ll call the cops,” explained Ned S. Levi , a columnist and travel scam expert with Travelers United.

If you’ve arranged for a driver to pick you up at the airport, make sure you have a way to verify it’s the correct driver to avoid scammers.

Unsecured Wi-Fi And Hotspots

“Think about how much we rely on technology when we travel,” Armeson said. “Although it wasn’t a cyber attack, look at the impact the Crowdstrike software outage had on the entire airline industry this summer. On a more personal level, we all use technology to access our boarding pass, navigate new places, manage our trip budget and stay connected.”

Cybercriminals often take advantage of these opportunities to access sensitive information and data.

“For instance, hackers set up fake Wi-Fi networks in areas with free Wi-Fi, like airports or hotels,” Armeson explained. “When you try to connect, you see two networks with similar names and, without verifying which is correct, you might connect to the hacker’s network. Now that hacker can access your device and infect it with malware or intercept your data.”

Make an effort to avoid unsecured Wi-Fi networks. The same goes for hotspots.

“Be wary of any hotspot requesting credit card information and ensure you connect only to reputable networks,” Moro urged. “Scammers may set up fake hotspots and use them to hack into your phone to track passwords, identity information, and bank information.”

He also warned about “shoulder surfing” on your travels ― when scammers look over people’s shoulders (sometimes from a distance with binoculars or other aids) as they enter their usernames and passwords in a hotel lobby, airport or coffee shop. Use your hand to cover keypads, consider a screen protector and take advantage of two-factor authentication to avoid this situation.

Bookings for rental cars, accommodations and even flights can lead unsuspecting travelers into scams.

Car Rental Scam

“We all want a good deal and try to do online searches for the best price of a rental car, and scammers know this,” Nofziger said. “They will set up phony customer service numbers online that look just like those of major rental-car companies indicating to ‘call for the best deal.’”

When you call, you’ll likely receive an offer for a huge discount but only if you pay ahead of time, and they’ll request payment in the form of prepaid gift card.

“This is so hard for travelers because oftentimes they only realize they have been a victim when they show up at their destination and there is no rental car for them,” Nofziger said. “Always verify that you’re calling the real customer service department, or that you’re on a legitimate rental-car-company website.”

Another car rental scam involves fake claims of damage. Be sure to take photos of your vehicle upon return.

“When you bring the car back, the rental company claims a week or more later that there was damage to the car such as a dent, a burn in the upholstery or smoking smell, and charges you to take care of the problem,” Levi said. “This happens sometimes with well-known rental companies.”

Emergency Calls

“Another scam involves robocallers who target travelers’ families, claiming an emergency and urging them to send money immediately,” Moro said. “This scam is especially effective against older travelers.”

To counter this scheme, he recommended talking to your family before you leave home and setting up a special code word that you would use only in cases of genuine emergencies.

“This can help family members distinguish between real emergencies and scams,” Moro noted.

‘Closed’ Tourist Attractions

“People may tell you an attraction is closed but they know a ‘better’ spot ― then proceed to drive you around to various shops that will pressure you into buying something,” Kepnes said.

Scammers might insist the site is closed for lunch or a local holiday, but be sure to verify this is the case.

When you arrive at a tourist attraction that appears to be closed, walk around to all entrances or sides of the building. Check the hours on the official website and social media pages.

If you arrive at an attraction without a ticket, avoid purchasing a counterfeit one outside.

“With so many tickets being printed online these days or in emails sent to smartphones, scammers create their own tickets and claim that their friend can’t go and they are selling their ticket outside the venue ― but the ticket is fake, of course,” Levi said.

Fake Customer Service

“Scammers use AI to mimic real customer service representatives through voice, video, or chat, leading to fraudulent transactions,” said Brittany Allen , a trust and safety architect at Sift. “It can even look like a legitimate phone number ― fraudsters have no problem spoofing a company’s name on caller ID.”

Stressed-out travelers dealing with cancelations and other disruptions are prime targets for this kind of scam.

“Cybercriminals are scouring social media looking for frustrated travelers,” Armeson explained. “Let’s say your flight is canceled, and you post your disappointment about it on social media, tagging the airline.”

She noted that scammers seek out these types of posts and are ready to pounce with fake airline profiles to help you “fix the issue.”

“In reality, they aren’t fixing anything at all,” Armeson added. “They are attempting to steal your credit card number or login credentials disguised as someone who can help you with a refund or rebooking.”

Strangers On The Street

Of course, travel is an opportunity to meet new people and explore the local culture, but you can still be friendly and have a nice time while keeping your guard up.

“Travelers are at risk for petty crime like pickpocketing,” Moro noted. “Always be cautious when accepting offers from unofficial tour services, as they may not be legitimate, and always stay alert to potential distractions that could be used to facilitate theft. An example of this is a stranger approaching you to ask for money or to engage in a friendly conversation. This can be used as a distraction while an accomplice pickpockets you. It’s important to always be alert and hyper-aware of your surroundings.”

He urged travelers to keep their belongings secure and never travel with more cash, cards, and documents than they need.

“People may ‘accidentally’ spill something on you and then apologize profusely while their accomplice picks your pocket,” Kepnes warned. “Or friendly locals ask you to sign a petition for a ‘worthy’ cause only to then extort you for money after you’ve signed.”

Don’t let a good street performance distract you from holding on to your belongings. And look out for what Levi calls “the ersatz cop scam.”

“A fake cop comes to a traveler on the street and asks to examine their wallet for counterfeit bills and steals their cash,” he explained. “Yes, people fall for it, particularly older travelers.”

“I advise travelers to exercise caution when using ATMs or card readers at restaurants, bars and other establishments while traveling,” Moro said. “These devices can capture card numbers and PINs, which scammers can then use to clone cards.”

He recommended withdrawing cash ahead of your trip and storing it securely. Whenever possible, be sure to use the “tap” option at checkout, rather than inserting your credit or debit card.

Fraudulent Booking Websites

“Cybercriminals can easily set up fake booking websites that look just like real ones, and use enticing travel deals to convince people to enter their credit card details,” Armeson noted.

Travelers use these to book nonexistent tickets, flights, accommodations and more before embarking on their journey, only to later discover the fraud.

“With the rise in popularity of rental properties, there has been an increase in fake listings as well as false information on listings,” Moro said. “Always use well-known, reputable booking platforms and avoid using third-party websites. When booking hotels, make sure that you are using their approved websites or a reputable booking site. Always make sure that any travel agencies are verified and have credible reviews, should you plan to use one.”

Many fraudsters use payment methods that are difficult to dispute, like wire transfers.

“Even more sophisticated fraudsters can use these fake travel websites as middlemen to collect victims’ personal and financial data while actually booking the requested flights or accommodations elsewhere, which means it may take even longer for victims to realize their data is compromised,” Allen noted. “The availability of generative AI has made these websites even more convincing.”

Travelers might also receive phishing emails that appear to be from legitimate travel companies and wind up giving sensitive information to scammers.

“Similarly to the fake booking sites, the more sophisticated fraudsters sometimes use these emails to pass the victim along to the legitimate company’s site to obfuscate their fraudulent activity,” Allen said. “And AI has made these emails even harder to spot.”

There are resources to assist travelers who have been scammed.

What To Do If You Suspect You’ve Been Scammed

If you suspect you’ve fallen for a scam, remember there are steps you can take to protect your data and money and recover lost funds.

“First, cut off all communication with the scammer and do not provide them with any more information,” Allen advised. “If you are communicating with them on a social media platform or messaging app, report the associated accounts. Alert your financial institutions and other relevant authorities, including your local police department.”

In addition to contacting your bank, she recommended reviewing and monitoring your bank accounts, credit card or other financial statements, credit reports, and any notifications you receive from banks, credit card companies, or government agencies. If you have a travel insurance policy, reach out to the provider to find out about next steps.

“It’s generally a good idea to freeze your credit with the three big reporting agencies ― Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax ― and even more so if you believe you’ve been the victim of a scam,” Allen added. “Look out for any new charges you did not make, or new opened accounts.”

Change your passwords for travel and financial accounts and enable two-factor authentication to avoid a takeover. Consider using a password manager. In situations where your devices were compromised, run a scan for malware and back up any important data. A factory reset can help as well.

“If you’re just out a few dollars, consider that the cost of the lesson learned,” Kepnes said. “I’ve been scammed more times than I can count over the years, but at the end of the day, losing a few bucks here and there won’t break the bank. Just make sure you pay more attention next time!”

When you're looking for someplace to store your sex toys, consider factors like the number of toys you need to store, how often you travel with them, and how discreet you want to be. It's also worth considering whether you prefer a storage solution with a lock.

Yes, you could keep your toys floating around in the bedside drawer or shoved under the mattress. However, a specific place to store them will protect them from dirt, dust, and other debris. Some storage options also provide extra security that ensures no one who shouldn't see your sex toys—like kids, roommates, or house cleaners—doesn't stumble upon them. Other storage cases also have built-in sanitizing features that ensure your toys are squeaky-clean next time you want to get down.

5 Best Travel Credit Cards, According to Finance Experts

cheeky shopping trip

If you’re someone who travels a lot , whether for business or pleasure, you may be wondering if it’s worthwhile to look into the best travel credit cards. The finance experts we spoke to agree that the right card can help with cashing in on rewards. And when it comes to choosing, it boils down to the annual fee amounts, any airline benefits, and the best options for international travel (if that’s a priority for you). Other travel perks can include elite airport lounge access, free hotel nights, and no foreign transaction fees, benefits that are sometimes even offered on cards with no annual fees. Below, experts break down what to look for in a travel card, as well as the top five picks to consider.

Your travel credit card questions, answered

What are travel credit cards, should you get a travel credit card, what to look for in a travel credit card, is a high annual fee a red flag, 1. best travel credit card for beginners: chase sapphire preferred card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is ideal for beginners for various reasons. For starters, its $95 fee is on the low end compared with other travel cards. Perks include travel protection benefits (including trip-cancellation insurance, primary car rental insurance, and lost-luggage insurance), and annual hotel credit (through Chase Travel).

This card also has a welcome offer of 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening. For rewards, users get 5 points per dollar on travel booked through Chase Travel and Lyft purchases; 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery store purchases (not including Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs); 2 points per dollar on all other travel purchases; and 1 point per dollar on everything else. 2. Best Credit Card for Domestic Travel: Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card

Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card

  • What it offers back: Earn 2 points per $1 spent on Southwest purchases, Rapid Rewards hotel and car rental partner purchases, local transit and commuting (including rideshare), and internet, cable, and phone services; select streaming; 1 point per $1 spent on everyday purchases, and 25% back on inflight purchases (i.e. Wi-Fi and alcoholic beverages)
  • Annual fee: $69
  • Rewards rate: 1 to 2 points per dollar

  • What to note : Low annual fee, generous welcome and anniversary offer, no foreign transaction fees
  • Credit score needed : Not specified

This travel credit card is my card of choice, and I've held it for 10 years now. Given the ability to quickly accumulate points and a generous anniversary bonus, the card’s low annual fee has paid for itself and then some every year, since I often manage to rack up enough points for a handful of one-way flights (or at least a couple of round-trip ones). Southwest also flies to several international destinations in Central America and the Caribbean—in fact, my husband and I booked our honeymoon in Belize in 2017 entirely with points. This card also has no transaction fees, and other perks include 25% back on in-flight purchases (such as Wi-Fi and alcoholic beverages, which are $8 each) and two early bird check-ins per year.

3. Best Credit Card for International Travel: Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card

Bank of America Travel Rewards Credit Card

  • APR: 0% intro APR for the first 15 statement closing dates following the opening of your account; after that, 19.24% to 29.24%
  • What it offers back: 3% cash back on gas and EV charging stations, online shopping, cable, streaming, Internet, phone plan, dining, travel, drug store or pharmacy, and home improvement or furnishings purchases; 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs; 1% cash back on all other purchases; as well as 3% and 2% cash back on the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter in the choice category, and at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, then earn unlimited 1% thereafter
  • Annual fee: None
  • Rewards rate: 1.5 points for every $1 spent on all purchases, everywhere, every time
  • Intro offer: 25,000 online bonus points, a $250 travel or dining statement credit value, after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening
  • What to note: No annual fee, 0% intro APR, no foreign transaction fees

Bank of America’s Travel Rewards credit card is another great choice for frequent travelers, as it comes with no annual fee or foreign transaction fees, which is ideal if you intend to spend a lot of time abroad. A huge added bonus is a 0% introductory APR that applies to the first 15 statement closing dates. Additional perks include 25,000 online bonus points and a $250 travel or dining statement credit value after making at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days.

Card holders can also earn unlimited points, with 1.5 points for every $1 spent on all purchases; points also don’t expire. Finally, this card doesn’t have any blackout dates, which means you can use it on any hotel or airline, at any time.

4. Best Travel Card With Lounge Access: Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

  • APR: 19.99%, 26.24% or 29.99%, depending on your credit score
  • What it offers back: 10,000-mile anniversary bonus, $300 annual travel credit, $100 Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit
  • Annual fee: $395
  • Rewards rate: 10 miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars; 5 miles per dollar on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel using this Rewards card account; 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases
  • Intro offer: 75,000 bonus miles if you spend at least $4,000 within three months of your enrollment date
  • What to note: One drawback is the high annual fee, but perks include a higher rewards rate on travel-related purchases
  • Credit score needed: Excellent (800 to 850)

If you like to travel in style, one of this card’s top perks is unlimited complimentary access for you and two guests at more than 1,300 airport and travel lounges. That’s huge if you don’t like the buzzkill that comes with not being able to share the finer things with your travel companions.

It’s worth noting that this card comes with a higher annual fee than most others, and you need excellent credit to qualify. But the rewards it comes with (specifically, that annual miles bonus and travel credit) will quickly make that fee pay for itself. The benefits quickly outweigh the fee as well, and include 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months, equal to $750 in travel.

The rewards rate structure includes 10 miles for every dollar spent on hotels and rental cars that were booked through Capital One Travel, 5 miles for every dollar spent on flights booked through Capital One Travel, and 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases.

5. Best for Everyday Rewards: American Express Gold Card

American Express Gold Card

  • APR: 21.24% to 29.24%
  • What it offers back: $120 dining credit, $120 Uber Cash, $100 travel experience credit when booking through The Hotel Collection
  • Annual fee: $250
  • Rewards rate: 4 points per dollar at restaurants or groceries, 3 points per dollar on flights, 1 point per dollar on all other purchases
  • Intro offer: 60,000 points after you spend $6,000 in eligible purchases within the first six months of card membership
  • What to note: While this card does have a higher annual fee than most, it offers a generous rewards structure and welcome bonus, as well as no foreign transaction fees

This card is great for racking up dining and grocery rewards, which are things everyone uses on a regular basis, especially if your travel volume is on the lower end. So if you’re a foodie, you’ll love the incentive to dine out more often than usual.

While it does have a hefty $250 annual fee, this card also comes with an introductory offer of 60,000 membership points after spending $6,000 in the first six months of card membership. Its points-earning ability includes 4 points for each dollar spent on dining at restaurants and US supermarkets (up to the first $25,000 in purchases per calendar year; then 1 point per dollar) and 3 points for every dollar spent on flights booked directly with an airline or with Amex Travel.

Other perks include a statement credit of up to $120 annual for dining, up to $120 in annual Uber Cash, and up to $100 in hotel credits, all of which would prove beneficial when using the card while traveling.

There are two main types of travel credit cards: cobranded hotel and airline cards and transferable-points bank cards. With both these cards, you’ll typically get a large sign-up bonus in the form of rewards points and perks that will offset several years’ worth of the annual fee.

Transferable-points cards allow you to earn rewards points on everyday purchases like dining and groceries, which ultimately go to your stockpile of points to eventually put toward travel.

According to Torres, key features of travel cards include sign-up bonuses for quick rewards; the ability to earning points across spending categories, including travel and everyday expenses; and flexible redemption options. When comparing cards, you should consider perks like airport lounge access, travel insurance, and statement credits for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.

“If you can make the most of the rewards and perks offered by the card, it can be a savvy financial move, regardless of your travel frequency,” says Jannese Torres, host of the Yo Quiero Dinero podcast and author of Financially Lit!: The Modern Latina’s Guide to Level Up Your Dinero & Become Financially Poderosa . “Ultimately, it's about aligning the card’s features with your lifestyle and financial goals to make the most of your spending, whether you’re a frequent flyer or an occasional traveler.”

Even if your total annual travel is on the lower end, you might think about snagging a travel credit card if you find yourself booking airfare and hotel stays a few times a year, says personal finance expert Nicole Lapin , who also hosts Money Rehab podcast.

“These cards can be great for earning rewards faster on travel spending, and even if you’re not jet-setting often, using one for daily expenses to collect points or miles for an occasional lavish getaway can still be a smart move,” she says. “It’s like putting away a little extra for a future vacation every time you shop.”

Generally speaking, as with any credit card, it also makes sense to consider a travel credit card if your finances are in good standing and it would benefit your travel plans . Experts universally agree that everyone should have some type of rewards credit card, assuming they have an appropriate credit score and can pay the card off in full every month. The decision to get a travel credit card hinges on various factors, including how much you spend, the card’s rewards structure, and whether the benefits outweigh any associated fees, Torres says.

According to Lapin, you should look for a travel credit card that offers a solid rewards rate on your spending.

Sign up bonus: Look for a juicy sign-up bonus and perks that suit your travel style, she says. “Key features might include things like no foreign transaction fees, comprehensive travel insurance, and freebies like airport-lounge access or credits for Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. But be cautious of cards with unreasonable minimum-spending requirements to earn sign-up bonuses, Torres says. “Make sure you can comfortably meet the spending threshold without overspending or accruing unnecessary debt,” she says.

Rewards program: In that same vein, though, consider a rewards program with perks you will actually use—if you regularly fly in and out of an airport that doesn’t have a lounge, then a premium card with lounge access probably shouldn’t be a priority. “Other red flags include restrictive redemption options that tie you to one airline or hotel chain, unless you’re totally okay with that limitation,” Lapin says.

However, you’ll also want to avoid cards with limited redemption options or complex rewards structures that could make it challenging to maximize your rewards, and steer clear of cards with high foreign transaction fees, especially if you frequently travel internationally, Torres says: “These fees can quickly diminish the value of your rewards when using the card abroad.”

Annual fees: While many travel cards will come with an annual fee, they also typically come with a sign-up bonus worth far more than that fee, making it easily pay for itself. It’s also key to zero in on your own travel habits, so if you’re flying a specific airline multiple times a year, it can make sense to get a branded card for that airline.

Airline perks: Some airline credit cards also offer free checked bags as a benefit for holding the card, which can be a huge advantage to those who typically check bags, as this can save you around $40 per bag, per leg of your trip.

Ultimately, “balance annual fees with benefits, prioritize cards with no foreign transaction fees for international travel, and explore additional perks like concierge services,” Torres says.

At first glance, a high annual fee can send people running from signing up for a travel credit card. Experts often see them as green flags instead of red one, however, assuming you get the value out of them in points and perks. Even a no-annual-fee travel card that has no foreign transaction fees can be worthwhile for a single trip abroad, considering that foreign transaction fees can otherwise add 2% to 3% to the price of every international purchase.

“In certain cases, a high annual fee on a travel credit card can be justified by the valuable perks and benefits it offers,” Torres says. “For frequent travelers who prioritize convenience and luxury, these cards often provide access to airport lounges, elite status with airlines and hotels, and comprehensive travel insurance coverage, enhancing the overall travel experience. “

Additionally, cards with high annual fees may offer generous rewards rates, lucrative sign-up bonuses, and flexible redemption options, allowing cardholders to accumulate points or miles quickly and redeem them for premium travel rewards, Torres says.

Cards with annual fees also tend to have other big benefits, such as travel insurance, as well as some niche benefits on certain cards, for example, statement credits at Saks Fifth Avenue, Uber, or Equinox.

“Just remember to align the card with your actual travel habits and financial goals, and calculate whether you’ll use enough perks to offset any fees,” Lapin says. “Choosing the right travel credit card can really help make your travels more enjoyable and a bit more economical.”

Meg Ryan and Daughter Daisy Spotted on Rare Outing in New York City

The actress and her daughter stepped out together in the Big Apple for what appeared to be a shopping trip on Wednesday, Aug. 28

cheeky shopping trip

Meg Ryan is having some one-on-one time with daughter Daisy .

The What Happens Later star, 62, and her younger child were photographed out and about in New York City's SoHo and Tribeca neighborhoods on Wednesday, Aug. 28, when they appeared to be doing some shopping, judging from the white shopping bag in Ryan's hand.

Mother and daughter were both dressed in casual-chic attire, with Ryan in a white top with the sleeves rolled up and loose-fitting black slacks and shoes. Daisy opted for a white button-up with a colorful print tucked into high-waisted belted blue jeans and white sneakers.

Wednesday marked a rare sighting of Ryan and her daughter, who was born in China in 2004 and adopted by the actress in early 2006. Ryan is also mom to actor son Jack Quaid , 32.

Appearing on the cover of Glamour in December 2023, Ryan opened up about What Happens Later , which she also co-wrote, sharing that she made the decision to add in some personal touches when it came to her character, Willa.

One of those decisions? To add an adoption story to Willa's background, which is a subject close to Ryan's heart due to Daisy's story.

"I put that in there because my daughter  is  my daughter," she told the outlet. "I’m convinced of magic because of our relationship. We were destined ."

The proud mom also raved about Daisy tackling her first year of college, where she was pushing herself to succeed and also enjoying her hobbies, which include design, sewing and tailoring. Ryan has even let her daughter tackle some pieces from her own closet.

"I’m just so happy to know them, to be their mom," the actress told Glamour of Daisy and Jack, the latter of whom she shares with ex-husband Dennis Quaid .

In an October 2023 cover story conversation with PEOPLE, Ryan opened up about parenthood, sharing how being a mother of two has been a joyful experience.

"I have two of the greatest kids," said the You've Got Mail actress. "They're just a blast. It is just a true joy."

Added Ryan of The Boys star Jack and Daisy, "It is a joy to me to know both of them ."

Of course, getting there required a "fundamental shift," with the  longtime actress, director and producer  acknowledging that becoming a mother "instantly makes you not the most important person in the room."

I'm an Amazon-Obsessed Shopping Editor, and I’ve Been Waiting All Summer for These 7 Labor Day Sales

These editor-loved picks include Gap dresses, Maybelline mascaras, and Le Creuset cocottes.

cheeky shopping trip

Real Simple / Francesca Fasciglione

Amazon’s Labor Day sale happens to be one of the biggest shopping events around to close out the summer. So you know I cannot help but do a little browsing for myself—especially while deals from top brands are this low.

As Real Simple’s Amazon shopping expert , I professionally scope out the best deals on a daily basis. And because I keep tabs on the steepest prices, you could say it helps me save big when I’m doing my own shopping. Case in point: these Labor Day sales on Gap, Maybelline, Le Creuset, and Cadence. Right now, I’m seeing deals on home, fashion, and kitchen items for up to 65 percent off, but it’s unclear how long they’ll last.

Editor-Loved Amazon Labor Day Sales

  • Gap Pocket T-Shirt Dress , $14 (was $40)
  • Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Washable Mascara , $8 with coupon (was $13)
  • Miulee Striped Corduroy Pillow Covers , $13 (was $18)
  • Le Creuset Pumpkin Mini Cocotte , $43 (was $50)
  • Saodimallsu Cap-Sleeve Knit Top , $28 with coupon (was $40)
  • Cadence Travel Container Skincare Set , $36 (was $42)
  • Wonderwin Silicone Heel Protectors , $10 (was $12)

Gap Pocket T-Shirt Dress

I keep seeing this Gap T-shirt dress everywhere, and it’s just about time to take the plunge now that it’s only $14. I practically live in Gap shirts, and this relaxed dress is just a longer version of it, giving me an entire outfit in one go. The dress has a crew neckline, short sleeves, and a little breast pocket detail. And because it has an easy-going fit, I can wear it comfortably all day. I plan to pair it with a chunky cardigan or denim jacket once the weather cools down, too.

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Washable Mascara

I just finished my last tube of this Maybelline mascara , so I’m in need of another. I keep going back to the Lash Sensational mascara because it has a flexible bristle brush that coats my all lashes, giving me that “awake” look, even if it’s 7 a.m. I also love the liquid formula that lengthens, but never clumps.

Miulee Striped Corduroy Pillow Covers

Giving my throw pillows a seasonal feel is easy with these Miulee textured covers . They have a hidden zipper that’ll let me slip ‘em over my existing throw pillows, so I don’t have to buy a whole new set of cushions. I also love the corduroy look of these, especially in this rust hue for fall.

Le Creuset Pumpkin Mini Cocotte

Speaking of fall, these Le Creuset mini cocottes are very on trend. The pumpkin design is so adorable, complete with fruit’s ribs and a stem. And while it’ll look good on my countertop, the cocotte isn’t just a decor piece: the stoneware dish can serve nuts and snacks and be used in the oven to cook dips, too.

Saodimallsu Cap-Sleeve Knit Top

This stylish knit top is the perfect piece to wear now and in the fall. It has cap sleeves, a high neckline, and that sweater-like material that’s very fashionable. I’m also into the exposed stitching that lines the front and sleeves, which gives it a unique appearance. The top comes in several autumnal hues, including dark green, brown, orange, and khaki.

Cadence Travel Container Skincare Set

After testing the Cadence Body Care Set , I was hooked. This set caters to my skincare routine while I’m on vacation. The set comes with three containers for my cleanser, moisturizer, and facial sunscreen (or really anything else I’d need). Just like the original set, this one is leak proof and has a magnetic design, so I’ll be able to find them all in my cosmetic bag at once.

Wonderwin Silicone Heel Protectors

OK, I’ll admit: I’ve been influenced. I saw someone post about wearing heel protectors with their boots, and I knew I had to get a pair. These heel protectors have a silicone makeup that goes around the foot to protect the heel and ankle area, aka the spot where I always get blisters. I’m excited to try this with my Dr. Martens, which I’ve been trying to break in for, oh, eight years?

Just a website used by scammers to advertise. The prices quoted look appealing, hence the 3 Stars but I haven’t booked anything yet after reading the bad reviews as I’m now a bit concerned that 50% of the reviews say the price advertised is not the price you pay so now I’m not sure whether I should book with Cheeky Trip??? Who is Cheeky Trip accountable to as I am now concerned I could book and then be out of pocket?? So I would like to know before booking who I can revert back to if all is not as it seems after I book as I am concerned after reading many of the dissatisfied reviews that I may have a terrible experience too and be out of pocket!!!

RUDE, AND NO COMMUNICATION SKILLS!!

Right... my partner and I have bought holiday packages through Cheekytrip.com in previous years. Now, we know they are a comparison website but what gets me is this so- called live price business, which always happens to be not the upto date price and always end up being alot and I mean, ALOT!!! more than the price advertised. The reason for the extra star is because, fair to say if a potential customer doesn't like the price they are told. When the operator eventually listens to you that is, they will look at any alternative. In previous years service was much better but this summer season is a no no no. Getting the operators to listen is like pulling teeth and they are very rude attitudes. Ultimately, an interesting experience but not a good one. Unfortunately not how they used to be I'm afraid.

Save ££ using Cheeky Trip to compare prices

Using cheeky trip to compare prices can save lots of money. I see lots of people airing grievances with the wrong company here! Cheeky trip is a comparison site - if you go to book with the booking site and they heave the prices that’s not cheeky trips fault and bad form for those of you whinging here! My trip home from New Zealand via Miami was fabulous. We stayed at The Palms Hotel and the vibe was very chic, we watched the sunrise over the ocean from our bed and there was freshly squeezed orange juice by the pool which backed onto the ocean. Our flights were with quantas who made us very comfortable. Whilst we were in Miami we booked a cruise with Carnival round the eastern Carribean and that was delightful too. Once we came back to Miami we shopped and the only whinge I’d have about the whole trip (which has nothing to do with Cheeky Trip and is America wide) they don’t put sales tax on the products til you get to the tills - ridiculous!!!

Website is great but AVOID

Website is great, searches are good to use.... However Massive massive let down, getting hopes up and crushing them, complete waste of hours of our life A few evenings in fact... Im very busy with work at the moment and so in the little evening we have me and my wife were looking for a week away I had cheekytrips on my Facebook and always saw lots of great deals. I used the search a few times and soon realised the deals were better than other sites, so I stuck with it Spent hours the last two evenings delving into options, looking at reviews of the hotels on separate pages getting a feel for which flights, price and hotel we wanted We found the perfect answer at a price at the higher end of our budget... but worth it I noted the reference code and phone number, this was just after midnight and rang in the morning from work This agent was called delight holidays Instantly trying to alter my options slightly (I have a feeling they possibly get some kind of information about the different searches you've made to manipulate you?) Trying to change hotels, dates Telling me he will get a better deal No no I said, we've rang for the exact deal we spent hours Perfecting, for the price stated... Ahh see that hotels not available he tells me I'll find you another 5 star with great views ect he tells me Cheap Good deal No good, not the hotel we'd settled on, The prices of all these alternatives he tried to sell were all more than the original, and upon researching what he said, not the same level of hotel we found advertised He asked me to wait 15mins for a call back he would try and find availability in the hotel we wanted... He called back He offered some different dates about a week either side of our trip (Now we have a degree of flexibility luckily...) I told him it would be difficult to change our dates, we had set up our perfect trip and that's what I've called about, but what's the price then? £1300 was the answer.. on a trip that was advertised at £740! Having a laugh Cheeky trip Really stretched our expectations and let us down, BUT we thought it must just be this agents DELIGHT HOLIDAYS.... so foolishly Having felt we missed out on a 'once in a lifetime' type deal between the middle of the night and morning... we also spent last night looking again for somewhere else wonderful We even upped our budget, wanting to ensure we was going to get what we looked for... Found something, not as good as the first night, but beautiful And enough for us to feel yes, we will go up to and spend £994... This was GALAXY HOLIDAYS agent Exact same thing... Except we had phoned before 11pm closing time this time Took the quote reference off me... oh sorry this quote says expired Eh I literally searched it 20minutes ago Took all the details of the trip *Except the resort on crete, or the hotel itself* so he shouldn't have known this information And the deal he offered for same dates was more expensive by over £200, and a hotel of his choice! I said it's too much, we've already upped our budget, and we want that certain hotel He said the hotel I wanted was too expensive (I hadn't even told him which resort on the island or which hotel, he seemed to know, like I said I think they have access to all your search data) We were let down again And I'm sure this wasn't a coincidence I wrote on a few posts on their Facebook about this experience and they've subsequently taken me off the group AVOID!

This holiday was our 1st holiday abroad as a family and it was amazing, the food was great & the entertainment was fantastic, we only left the complex once because we had everything we needed there. The children loved daisy & still have her teddy. The pools were great too. We had a view of the entertainment in the night & sometimes watched from our balcony. I would highly recommend this hotel 😀

The call staff I spoke to were rude and pushy, when I booked the resort I wanted. They then told me after I paid me the money that the accompanying flight was 3-4hours away from the resort, then had the cheek to tell me that it was my fault for quoting the reference he asked for- even though that was the reference that was stated on the website!! I had to pay £129 to cancel the flight, as I wasn’t at all happy with the flight alternative. I appreciate that you take your chances with cheap deals but I do expect to be treated with respect and to be given appropriate information without feeling you have to prize it out of the travel agent. Very poor sales skills, very poor customer service, would NOT advise using them under any circumstances. Got a much better deal elsewhere, and I suggest you do the same!!

Sahra Su was a fantastic spot for a little bit of autumn sun. It was clean & the food was good. The staff were helpful and it wasn’t too overcrowded. It’s a short taxi ride from the town & beach & the sister hotel was lovely too, we went there a couple of times for dinner.

Do not book with this website!

Do not book with this website! Sold us a holiday we found online, paid for it, then they said holiday company will be in touch. Holiday company never got in touch, I phoned back several times, they kept saying they know nothing and then after I threatened legal action they phoned back. Told us the holiday we had PAID for wasn’t available, money back was not an option as flights were booked! Flights were in fact booked to the wrong airport so we were told we had to pay £200 more to go to the destination we wanted to go to, stupidly, we paid it to then be told only hotel available was a different hotel in a different location!!! Almost £1,000 later and we are going on a completely different holiday! We are a 45 & 49 year old couple, we were put in a lower star hotel full of 17-20 year olds screaming all night & with no air con which we stated we needed due to my health condition. We also asked for a hotel on or very near the beach due to my leg swelling as we had originally ‘booked’ but the beach was 15/20 minute walk away and uphill on the way back. All in all it was an awful experience which made me very ill, I am still ill now & still furious over wasting around £1,800 (spending money included) on a terrible holiday. Nothing but a scam to make money off hard working people, please stay away. I’m not the person who usually writes reviews but the way all this was done was awful & it truly ruined what we hoped would be a nice relaxing 5 nights away following a stressful few weeks :( I feel furious for the amount of others they have likely scammed so I will be asking for this company to be looked into.

Noel Gallagher has given his first 'interview' since announcing Oasis are getting back together - and told a cheeky young boy a tall tale about why he fell out with his brother.

As the world digests news of the long-awaited Oasis reunion , fan Steve Sheward shared a video of the moment he and his children ran into the rock-and-roll star in the Stone Island store in London.

Mr Sheward tells his children the man they're seeing was part of a "legendary band", while his eldest daughter asks: "Wait, is he getting back with his brother?"

One of his children then cheekily asks Noel why he fell out with Liam .

In response, Noel says: "Cause he stole my teddy bear."

After the boy says "you're lying", the High Flying Birds bandleader adds: "Not lying. He stole it in 1978."

Noel then cracks up when another lad tells him: "You're fake, see ya."

With a Costco warehouse in the background, a man in shorts and a long-sleeved shirt loads groceries from a cart to the bed of a pickup truck.

How Costco Hacked the American Shopping Psyche

More than 100 million people visit the retailer for their groceries — and gas and TVs and gold bars and pet coffins — but saving money may not be the only motive.

Costco, which is the third largest retailer in the world, has changed how Americans shop in the last 40 years, making both bulk buying and the acquisition of big-ticket items on grocery runs a regular occurrence. Credit... Kerry Tasker for The New York Times

  • Aug. 20, 2024

When it opened in 1984, the Costco on West Dimond Boulevard in Anchorage did not seem like the future of food. A glorified shed the color of stale coffee, the warehouse offered the sort of products and deals Alaskans go crazy for: mammoth quantities of staples like peanut butter and tomato sauce, along with local favorites such as caribou sausage. The state’s extreme environment and the need to travel hours or even days for groceries made it a hit right off the bat.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

Today the parking lot, full of jacked-up, Thuled-out 4x4s on studded tires and mobile homes that look more like mobile fortresses, has a bit of an edge for a grocery store. There’s something edgy about the inventory, too: neoprene survival suits, meat grinders, gun safes.

Inside the vast store, overloaded shopping carts seemingly pilot themselves down the aisles. One was pushed by Gabriella Pelesasa, a teenager who was buying, among other things, a pair of whole pigs, at 45 pounds each.

As her sister sat on the cart eating a Costco hot dog, Ms. Pelesasa reported simply, “They have bigger versions of what we want.”

Though the Anchorage location, one of the retailer’s first, once seemed like a survivalist outlier, today it shows how visionary Costco was.

“In 2020, about one-quarter of the population stockpiled nonperishable foods,” said Jennifer Mapes-Christ of the market research firm Packaged Facts. Today, more than half do. Ms. Mapes-Christ said that while the pandemic was an accelerant, the trend began before that, driven by anxieties about climate change and economic instability.

A wide shot of the inside of a Costco warehouse, with check out lanes in the foreground.

In 2019, one quarter of U.S. consumers shopped at Costco. Today it is nearly one-third. Costco is the third-largest retailer in the world, behind only Amazon and Walmart.

But the success of Costco goes far beyond hoarding. The company has hacked the psyche of the American consumer, appealing to both the responsible-shopping superego (“Twelve cans of tuna for $18!”) and the buy-it-now id (“I deserve that 98-inch flat screen”).

Ostensibly, Costco is a discount store, a place to save money and stretch your grocery dollar, but it is also an aspirational shopping experience, feeding that most American of appetites: conspicuous consumption.

Few companies have greater influence over what we eat (or wear, or fuel our cars with, or use for personal hygiene). Costco dominates multiple categories of the food supply — beef, poultry, organic produce, even fine wine from Bordeaux, which it sells more of than any retailer in the world. It is the arbiter of survival for millions of producers, including more than a million cashew farmers in Africa alone. (Costco sells half the world’s cashews.) Its private label, Kirkland, generates more revenue than towering brands like Nike and Coca-Cola.

For all its success, the company is not well understood. The top brass are insular and secretive. And beyond quarterly reports, Costco rarely discloses anything of its inner workings.

But to Charlie Munger, the billionaire investor and Warren Buffett’s right hand at Berkshire Hathaway, the balance sheet speaks for itself. In one of his last interviews before he died last year , he was succinct: “It is a perfect damn company.”

‘Everything was about trust’

Costco has often been likened to a cult, in part because once members — 134 million worldwide — enter the fold, they rarely leave.

Indeed, devotion to the brand is so avid it has inspired tributes on social media, bits on late-night shows by celebrities hoping to seem relatable and even a book, “ The Joy of Costco .”

At a time when Americans increasingly view big brands as predatory monopolies or fumbling, broken-down legacies, Costco is revered for its high wages, attentive customer service and “deep commitment to integrity,” said Jeremy Smith, the president of Launchpad, an Oregon-based food brand incubator that specializes in placing products at Costco.

Whether Costco is a cult or not, its spiritual founder was a Bronx-born lawyer with utopian ideals and strict morals.

Sol Price, born in 1916, was the son of garment workers from Minsk, and belonged to the generation of displaced Jews and other Europeans who thrived in New York’s small businesses — the delis, candy shops and pawnshops of the Depression and postwar years. In the 1920s, the family moved to San Diego, where he went to high school.

After law school at the University of Southern California, Mr. Price started his career representing grocers and other merchants. With the temperament of a shopkeeper who obsesses over his customers and fusses over the smallest of details, in the 1950s Mr. Price began converting empty San Diego warehouses into members-only bazaars where for a small fee, shoppers could get everything from hosiery to cigarettes at wholesale prices. The key to the business, called FedMart, was simple: keep members renewing year after year.

In 2003, Mr. Price described his philosophy to Fortune magazine as “How do we sell stuff at the lowest markup?” The overriding goal, he said, was “to look at everything from the standpoint of, is it really being honest with the customer?”

Mr. Price had a gift for connecting with shoppers at a time of exploding prosperity and social change, but paradoxically, one of his rules was not making too much money.

“He grew up in a family of socialists. He was a capitalist. He liked to make money, but he was pro-union, pro-labor, pro-little guy,” said David Schwartz, who co-wrote “The Joy of Costco” with his wife, Susan. “Everything was about trust. He would rather lose your business than your trust.”

Through a series of mergers over the years, Sol Price’s FedMart became what we know as Costco in the 1990s. To an uncanny degree for a modern corporation, the company, now headquartered in Issaquah, Wash., has remained true to Mr. Price’s vision. It is still relationship-minded, and members seem satisfied, renewing at a rate of 93 percent . Last quarter, the membership fees accounted for $1.12 billion, about two-thirds of Costco’s $1.68 billion total net income . The dependence, in other words, remains mutual.

Wall Street also likes what Costco does, especially the dependable cash flow that comes from membership. Occasionally, shareholders feel neglected — in 2004, an analyst with Deutsche Bank complained that Costco was “ overly generous ” with its employee benefits, saying, “Public companies need to care for shareholders first.” But few complain about the returns.

“I did the calculation once,” Mr. Schwartz said. “The stock price has grown 17 percent annually since the founding.”

‘A giant ecosystem’

Four thousand miles south of Anchorage, in Sugar Land, Texas, no one flies in by bush plane to shop. But in this swampy Houston suburb, life orbits around Costco just the same.

The site of a former prison farm for the sugar industry, Sugar Land has transformed in recent years into an interlocking complex of master-planned communities. In June, Costco opened Warehouse No. 882, its third in the area, on a prime piece of land.

On opening day, the al-Abadi family stood at the entrance, trailed by a long line of members waiting since dawn, despite the punishing heat.

Shariah al-Abadi, who came with a shopping list in mind (“butter, oil, the essentials”) and the intention to stick to it, epitomized one type of Costco member. Her teenage daughter Fatima typified another: She was there for the possibility of surprise. For months, as the new warehouse rose from the mud, so had Fatima’s anticipation. After an hour shopping in the new store, mother and daughter checked out with a cart barely containing the day’s haul, including a six-foot-tall teddy bear.

“We’ll be back,” sighed Ms. al-Abadi, who said she goes to Costco “twice a week. Sometimes more.”

Like Anchorage, Sugar Land is home to a rapidly growing Asian American population (largely Indian and Pakistani American in Sugar Land), which Costco is eager to serve, despite the challenge of operating across a nation of wildly varying local tastes and traditions.

“Costco knows what’s going on in Texas because they have an office there,” Mr. Smith said. “It’s very astute. They’re one of the few retailers that will allow a brand to go into just one building and test their product.”

As a result, Costco is able to pick up on trends and send intel back to Issaquah. “It’s a giant ecosystem,” said Mr. Smith, if also one dependent on human capital — the expertise of warehouse managers. Costco tends to promote from within, inculcating personnel with the company’s idiosyncratic culture for decades, if not entire careers. Many of the company’s top employees began as baggers or food handlers.

That limited Costco’s expansion in the past. For many years the company declined to open new warehouses at the rate Wall Street wanted, because of management concerns that the facilities were too challenging to operate.

@photogami Sus Foods at @Costco Wholesale you're too afraid to try! The lucky taro premium musang king durian is not $15.99 and I think it could be a great entry point for anyone wanting to try it #costco #thesushiguy #durian #fruit #foodreview ♬ original sound - The Sushi Guy

This concern seems to have waned, however. Costco now opens about 30 warehouses a year, with a growing number abroad. “Overseas expansion is where the growth is coming,” Susan Schwartz said. “Right now they’ve got seven warehouses in China. But they could have 150.”

East Asia has indeed been fertile for Costco, with openings this year in Japan (where it already has 33 warehouses), South Korea, Australia and China. That experience has yielded dividends at home. Expertise in Taiwanese and South Korean shopping preferences translated into the availability in the United States of products like braised abalone in brown sauce, giant red sea cucumber and Chinese-style bacon — and brand loyalty from Asian Americans.

Yutack Kang, a content creator from Milpitas, Calif., with 463,000 TikTok followers, posts frequently about “sus foods at Costco you’re too afraid to try.” One of his latest : frozen durian pulp produced by Lucky Taro, a Los Angeles-based importer.

“The Asian food selection is superb,” Mr. Kang wrote in an email.

‘Costco would never’

By and large, Americans do not trust corporations . But when asked which companies they do trust, they consistently rank Costco near the top.

“They’re selling the same food everyone else is selling,” Mr. Smith said. “It’s not like the products are magical. But they created a culture.”

Sol Price wanted Costco members to feel respected and smart. The company remains known for its no-questions-asked return policy, high-quality products and cheerful customer service. Employees are paid significantly better (an average of $26 per hour) than their counterparts at major retailers (an average $17 per hour). That helps create “a stable, motivated, capable team,” said Zeynep Ton, a professor at the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management.

Perhaps most important is Costco’s abiding reputation for low prices.

For Kirkland products, for instance, Ms. Ton said “they don’t mark up anything more than 14 or 15 percent.” This includes Costco’s flagship product, the wildly popular $1.50 hot-dog-and-soda combo, which has cost the same since 1985. It’s not publicly known whether the company makes money on the 200 million hot dogs it sells each year, but the pricing is widely seen as brilliant marketing.

Another, less obvious way Costco keeps faith with its members is by not selling shelf space. “Many retailers ask suppliers to pay for a position in a store,” said Mark Stovin, a former Costco executive who now works for OSMG , a leading food broker. “Costco would never do that.”

Mr. Stovin said Costco also does something almost none of its competitors do: restrain itself in mining customer data. “They have a number for every member, which could be trackable, traceable, and they could certainly dive into that,” Mr. Stovin said. “They really haven’t.”

It appears the company may be loosening up: Costco recently announced that it would join companies with less consumer-friendly reputations like Uber in starting a retail media network , serving ads to members based on their purchasing histories. (The company declined to say what platforms those ads might appear on. In a further shift, that effort will be led by an outsider, a veteran marketer from Walmart.)

Costco remains reluctant to embrace technology — it was a latecomer to e-commerce, for instance — which may be attributable to the spirit of Mr. Price, who commanded managers to step away from their computers.

“If you’re a senior manager, your job is to interact with members,” Mr. Schwartz said. “They expect senior people to be on the floor all the time.”

That ethos goes all the way to the top.

At the Sugar Land opening, Ron Vachris, who in January became Costco’s chief executive, just the third in the company’s 42-year history, could be seen chatting with floor personnel and inspecting the frozen tilapia. Hundreds of Costco employees, who are known for exuberant loyalty, had driven from as far away as Baton Rouge, La., to celebrate and shake hands with their new boss.

Mr. Vachris, who started as a forklift operator in 1982, greeted employees and customers warmly, seemingly willing to hang out all morning. Approached by a reporter, however, he handed over his business card and retreated into a corporate cadence. (“Texas has been a great state to us. We’re excited to have another building here.”) Subsequent requests for an interview were declined.

Costco executives are known for avoiding the press, which contributes to the company mystique. “They have amazing discipline,” Ms. Ton said. “If you go on LinkedIn, you won’t find much information about their executives.” And the company has no media relations office.

Because of Costco’s secrecy, judging whether the company lives up to its own professed standards can be a challenge.

“It would be interesting to know more about how they use their data,” said Raghu Iyengar, a professor of marketing at the Wharton School.

Since almost nothing is known publicly about Costco’s internal workings, he said, even its sterling reputation for low prices cannot be verified. To determine whether Costco’s prices are in fact “selling stuff at the lowest markup,” the company would need to be less guarded.

'Treasure Hunt Atmosphere’

Situated between a defunct strip club, Brooklyn’s industrial waterfront and a raucous, sludge-oozing elevated expressway, Costco Warehouse No. 318 is low on sparkle but hums with manic energy. The Sunset Park location seems to have set aside shelf space for every immigrant group in Brooklyn. Beyond that, though, this could be a Costco anywhere. That works to Costco’s advantage.

One way the company strokes the value-driven superegos of its members is simply with the presentation of its warehouses. With their exposed wiring, minimal sunlight and nary a Spotify playlist, the warehouses are, well, warehouses, with fluorescent lighting and bad acoustics, designed to be built in a hurry. (The 3.5-acre Sugar Land building, for example, took only four months to assemble.)

That no-frills presentation transmits a reassuring signal of benign intent: We’re not trying to seduce you. Which is its own kind of come-on.

“The customer walks in the door, and immediately there is a perception of value,” said Paco Underhill, the author of “ Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping .” “The perception of value means that as someone walks in, discretionary purchases take on a different mantle than they might at Kroger, Target or Macy’s. People go, ‘I would never think about buying that. But if I did, this is the place to get it.’”

For all its piety, the last thing Costco wants is for shoppers to stick to a budget. On the contrary, it wants them to return to the parking lot balancing a wobbly heap of products they had no intention of buying — a strategy known as “the Costco effect.”

“You’ve heard the phrase,” Mr. Vachris said on an earnings call in May. “People come in to spend $100 and walk out with $300.”

“We have created a treasure-hunt atmosphere,” said Jim Sinegal, the previous Costco chief executive, in an address to San Diego State University business students in 2017. “We try to create a sense of urgency, that if you see the product there, you better buy it, because chances are they won’t be there next time.”

In recent years, the treasure-hunt offerings have included Burberry shoulder bags ($1,000) and bottles of Romanée-Conti wine (a four-pack for $40,000). Last year the retailer even began offering one-ounce gold bars for about $2,000, which typically sell out within hours. (It has been estimated that Costco sells some $200 million in gold a month.)

And this manufactured circle of desire and regret works.

“I love Costco,” said Erica Rualo, a content strategist at Chase Bank, who has shopped at the Sunset Park warehouse. “But I hate the feeling of ‘I wish I had bought that,’ because now it’s gone. Or ‘I should have bought more of that.’”

Strictly speaking, Costco can still answer Sol Price’s question “Is it really being honest with the customer?” with a “Yes.” But at this point the spirit of his edict may have been lost to its letter.

It would be hard to argue that Costco buyers don’t know what they are getting into. After all, they have to ferry the cart with the seven-foot artificial tree, the solar panel, the steel pet coffin and the three-month supply of Belgian mini-cream puffs back to the car.

“The idea is that you don’t feel that these are temptations,” said Ayelet Fishbach, a behavioral psychologist at the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business. “You’re getting a great deal.”

But, she added, “The question is, Do you actually need this? You probably don’t.”
