Belmonte Concludes Historic Season With Win At 2022 PBA Tour Finals

Belmonte Concludes Historic Season With Win At 2022 PBA Tour Finals

When Jason Belmonte declared "I'm back!" after his Professional Bowlers Association Players Championship victory in January, he meant it.

He racked up four more titles in 2022, culminating his historic campaign with a PBA Tour Finals victory Sunday at Strikerz Bowling at Angel of the Winds Casino in Arlington, Washington.

The 38-year-old Australian capped off one of his finest seasons in style, rolling the second televised 300 game of his career in the championship match.

Belmonte defeated Dom Barrett 2-0, earning $30,000 for the win and a $10,000 bonus for the perfect game. The win marks his 30th career title, making him the eighth player in PBA history to eclipse that threshold.

"To have 30 titles, 14 majors, maybe seven Player of the Years," Belmonte said to Randy Pederson, "Mate, there's no way as a kid you ever thought this was gonna happen. There's no way!"

With five titles in 2022, Belmonte almost assuredly will earn his seventh PBA Player of the Year award. That would tie the record set by Walter Ray Williams Jr., whose seven honors spanned from 1986 to 2010. Belmonte needed just 10 years to match Deadeye's career mark.

"Walter Ray, the man is a living legend and someone who I see as the best player that I've ever seen," Belmonte said. "To equal him is a huge accomplishment and something I'm very, very proud of. But, it also motivates me to get just one more, just one more and have that title all to myself."

Belmonte stands among those names as one of the greatest athletes in recent memory. His dominance rivals that of Tiger Woods and Serena Williams. While Belmonte doesn't compare himself to anyone else, he understands the work ethic required to be successful at the highest level.

Of the preeminent American professional sports, only Wayne Gretzky, Barry Bonds, Novak Djokovic, Woods, Williams and Williams Jr. have won at least seven equivalent honors in their respective sports.

However, the 2022 PBA Player of the Year race was far from over entering the Tour Finals.

With two majors and five championship-round appearances, Anthony Simonsen needed one more title to put the cherry on top of a potential first career player-of-the-year campaign. Barrett, who had two titles to his name, could have snuck into the conversation himself with a win.

In the Group 2 stepladder finals, Barrett emerged victorious over Simonsen. Both players struck a ton in their two-game match, but the rabbit's foot in Barrett's backpack appeared to be the difference. He tripped roughly a half dozen 4-pins en route to a sweep of the 25-year-old two-hander.

After Barrett fired 279 in Game 1, he opened the door for Simonsen in Game 2. Simonsen squandered his early lead by missing a 7 pin in the seventh frame. He then could only watch as Barrett snow-plowed a match-clinching strike in the ninth frame.

Barrett's brilliant decision to start with reactive on the 46-foot Johnny Petraglia oil pattern, learning from his ill-fated use of urethane during qualifying, paid off handsomely as he defeated Jakob Butturff and EJ Tackett to set up a match between the two PBA Player of the Year hopefuls.

Earlier in the afternoon, top-seeded Belmonte took on the Group 1 stepladder finalists.

In the first match, Kris Prather overcame a last-minute impairment to his urethane ball to defeat Tom Daugherty. Prather's craftiness proved futile in the next match, as Kyle Troup mounted strike after strike after strike.

In fact, Troup struck on all 12 of his shots to achieve the 33rd televised perfect game in PBA history. Belmonte's 300 in the championship match later made it the first televised event in PBA history with two perfect games.

Though Troup earned a $10,000 bonus in return for perfection, he may have traded a few hits against Prather for a couple against Belmonte in the Group 1 final match. A flurry of 9 pins cost Troup in the opening game of the race to two wins.

Belmonte said he knew defeating Troup would not be easy, considering his tremendous ball motion and familiarity with the event's format. He refused to allow Troup any breathing room, completing the sweep to advance to the Tour Finals championship match.

After watching Barrett stampede through Group 2, Belmonte knew the championship match wouldn't be any easier.

"Watching Dom play against Anthony, I actually really liked Dom's ball motion," Belmonte said. "I thought this could be a pretty high-scoring match, too, if we both like what we see."

After shooting 300 in the first game, Belmonte didn't allow himself to celebrate the moment too much. He wanted to keep his focus sharp and avoid the roll-off at all costs.

The lanes transitioned quicker for Barrett than Belmonte, and the Australian's strike in the 10th frame locked up his 30th career title, and fifth of the season.

While he appreciates the privilege of competing on tour, Belmonte doesn't allow contentment to drift into his consciousness, even as the accolades continue to mount.

"I've never been complacent with where I am in the game," Belmonte said. "I'm always pushing to get more, to learn more, to practice more. Plus, my just absolute hunger to be one of the greatest to ever throw a ball down the lane. It definitely motivates and pushes me to wake up early, or to stay up late and get those extra games in."

As Belmonte chases the ghosts of PBA lore on the career titles list, he must stave off the game's rising stars. He wants to raise the bar to new heights and leave behind an indelible legacy as one of the game's greatest athletes.

What you need to know about PBA On Tour

Just weeks after concluding its 2022-23 season, the PBA is launching a new event called PBA On Tour, a series of games featuring all 12 teams playing in smaller venues mostly in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. But what is it exactly? From testing new rules, to filling a gap in the schedule, to trying out free agents here is everything you need to know about this summer series.

How long will the "tour" run and how often will games be played?

The tour kicked off on May 21 and will run until July 30. Each team will play the other 11 teams once. There will be no playoffs or championship series. Games will follow the usual PBA schedule of two games on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and one game on Saturday. The Wednesday-Friday-Sunday schedule will feature a double-header at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. while the Saturday game kicks off at 5:00 p.m.

What are the motivations for doing this?

Aside from filling the gap between seasons -- which at six months will be the league's longest offseason in history -- there are two major objectives: First, it will allow teams to test free agents, 3x3 players and potential rookies, as well as give them more time to integrate new acquisitions into their scheme of things. Second, it will give the league a chance to test 11 proposed rule changes. The rundown of these 11 rule changes is pretty extensive and can be found here . But the most significant change is the introduction of the coach's challenge. Under this proposal, a head coach can challenge certain calls once each half as long as the team still has a full timeout. If the challenge is unused in the first half, it cannot be carried over to the second half. Other proposed changes include new rules on the take foul, excessive timeouts, goal tending, and game clock operation at the end of the first, second and third quarters.

Who's playing and not playing for the teams?

Several teams are testing out their 3x3 players and potential rookies. Among the 3x3 players are John Apacible, Leo De Vera Chester Saldua and Marvin Lee of San Miguel Beer; Tzaddy Rangel, Pedrito Galanza and Dominic Fajardo of NLEX Road Warriors; Jpseh Eriobu of Magnolia Hotshots; and Jebb Bulawan, Wendel Comboy and Jan Sobrevega of NorthPort Batang Pier.

Players fresh out of college are also seeing action, the most prominent of which is Fran Yu of the Letran Knights, who is playing for his college coach Bonnie Tan at NorthPort. His Letran teammate Tom Olivario is also listed on the Batang Pier roster. There's also Daniel Atienza, formerly of the NU Bulldogs Team B, getting run time under former NU coach Jamike Jarin with the Phoenix Fuel Masters, and San Beda Red Lions Peter Alfaro, Damie Cuntapay, JV Gallego and Clifford Jopia, who are part of the TNT Tropang Giga's roster.

Understandably, many regular starters haven't seen action yet, as coaches are opting to play second stringers and newcomers. SEA Games gold medalists CJ Perez of SMB and Chris Newsome of the Meralco Bolts were present but in street clothes during their respective teams' opening games, as were Javee Mocon of Phoenix and June Mar Fajardo of SMB.

Not all stars will be playing, however, as some are either recuperating from injuries or concentrating on Gilas duties. Some veterans missing from the lineups: Roi Sumang and Arvin Tolentino of NorthPort; Jayson Castro, RR Pogoy and Mikey Williams of TNT; Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar and Jamie Malonzo of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel; and Vic Manuel and Chris Ross of SMB.

Where are they playing and are there tickets?

The venues in Metro Manila include Ynares Pasig, Ynares Antipolo, Caloocan Sports Complex, and the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. The provincial stops are the Batangas Coliseum, Tiaong in Quezon, Baliuag in Bulacan, and Dumaguete. The good news for fans is that admission is free.

What's up next for the Philippines basketball scene during and after this?

Plenty of basketball. Gilas will practice in June as it prepares for a European training camp in July. PBA On Tour will end 26 days before the FIBA World Cup kicks off on August 25.

After the World Cup ends on Sept. 10 and before the Hangzhou Asian Games on Sept. 23, the league will hold its rookie combine and rookie draft.

The league's 48th season will open after the Asian Games, which end on Oct. 10. Only two conferences will be played, but it's not yet clear if the Governors' Cup or Commissioner's Cup will join the Philippine Cup. This and other issues will be decided by the PBA Board during their annual planning session at the end of May.

Chicago area bowler gets shot at PBA Tour win close to home after career breakthrough

By Matt Zahn

February 9, 2024 / 4:45 PM CST / CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) – The best bowlers in the world are in the area as the PBA Tour makes a stop in Mount Prospect.

One local professional will try to win one for the hometown fans.

It's the first time the PBA Tour has made a stop in the Chicago area since an event in Aurora in 2019. That made for a unique opportunity for Oswego native AJ Johnson. He spoke to CBS 2 about bowling close to home, his recent breakthrough victory, and more.

Johnson's love of bowling started at a very young age for a pretty simple reason.

"I always watched my dad bowl, and I loved the fact that you could throw something at objects and knock them all down and hit stuff, and then it comes right back, and you get to do it all over again," he said.

The Oswego native gets a chance to compete against the best bowlers in the world close to home in the PBA Illinois Classic in Mount Prospect.

"I mean, it's absolutely amazing," he said. "It's just so cool being able to bowl a professional event near my hometown. It's really, I guess, tough to bowl in your home state because you want to do so well in front of your family and friends and people that come out to support you, but I also thrive on that."

Johnson has dealt with some time times as a professional. For eight years on the PBA Tour, he went through what he called "the grindest of grinds." That included bowling upwards of 40 games each tournament through multiple rounds of qualifying without getting rewarded with a victory.

"After a while, it takes a toll on you," he said. "It did. It took a toll on me for a little while, and getting to certain points in my career where I thought about throwing the towel in and being done."

Last September, Johnson finally broke through with his first PBA Tour win, which hit him a little differently than he expected.

"I've never been one of those players to say, like, it's just that sense of relief because I've always thought that once you get to that point, there's more work to be done," he said. "But there was a sense of relief. At the time, I didn't even really know that I had gotten it. I turned around and looked at my girlfriend, and I said 'Did I just win? Is it over?' And then everything just came out of me."

Johnson was clear that he's not complacent after getting that first victory and it appeared to have rejuvenated his love for the sport.

"I get to play a sport for a living, and I get to compete for a living, which is what I've been doing since I was a kid," he said. "I've loved being able to travel. I've gotten to go, I think, now 19 or 20 different countries because of bowling. I've gotten to meet some really cool people, met my girlfriend through this sport. It's been very rewarding, and sometimes I just need to make sure I remind myself of that."

Johnson is still the same kid throwing something at objects and, most of the time, knocking them all down.

He credited his work with sports psychologist Brian Cain for helping him get his first win. Johnson will have a shot at his second win on Saturday night.

Johnson made it through all the qualifying rounds this week to be one of the five finalists competing for the PBA Illinois Classic title.

Personal statistics do not matter at this point for Tyler Bey.

He just wants to play a key role as Magnolia looks to get back on level terms with San Miguel Beer in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

“I just want to win, man. I don’t really care about nothing else,” Bey said as the Hotshots go for a second straight win over the vaunted Beermen side Friday at Smart Araneta Coliseum in the pivotal fourth game set 7:30 p.m.

Losing for the first time as a PBA import has not dampened the spirits of Bennie Boatwright, who vowed to help San Miguel Beer deliver a bounce-back in Game 4 and put a stranglehold on the Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

“You gonna lose, and it’s part of life. You win some, you lose some,” Boatwright said after the Beermen’s 88-80 loss two nights prior at Smart Araneta Coliseum allowed the Magnolia Hotshots to reduce their deficit to 2-1 in the championship series.

MANILA, Philippines—San Miguel gave credit where credit is due.

Beermen Marcio Lassiter and CJ Perez acknowledged that the series with Magnolia was never going to be easy despite holding a 2-0 advantage before their Game 3 loss at Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday.

“We know it’s a long series. Everyone would have loved a sweep but this is a great team so we have to come out and be prepared for Game 4,” said Lassiter after their 88-80 loss to the Hotshots.

Calvin Abueva

Coach Chito Victolero insists that Magnolia wasn’t too distracted by the controversy surrounding the incidents involving Calvin Abueva in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.

“We took away all of the distractions and the players did a good job on the mental aspect preparing for this game,” said Victolero.
