Here’s what’s new with the redesigned Safari in macOS Monterey and how it works

Apple features a redesigned Safari with macOS Monterey but as it happens, the biggest UI change isn’t seen with the default version. Let’s jump into what’s changed, what’s new, and how Safari in macOS Monterey looks and works.

Apple made its way through a lot of Safari iterations during the macOS Monterey beta period and it even changed from the 12.0 build that comes installed on the 2021 MacBook Pro to the official Monterey public 12.0.1 release.

While the default Safari experience on Monterey 12.0.1 and later looks very much like what came with Big Sur, you can opt for the new modern and minimal new tab design by heading to Safari > Preferences > Tabs > Compact.

Beyond the default classic and optional super modern UI, Safari in Monterey includes new tab groups, a redesigned sidebar, the new Quick Note feature, UI/button changes, and more.

Safari in macOS Monterey: What’s new and how it works

The start page in the new Safari looks about the same with your Favorites up top, followed by Frequently Visited, Privacy Report, and Reading List. Like Safari in Big Sur, you can customize your start page background image with the included options or your own. You can drag to reorder the different sections or turn them on/off.

New in Safari for macOS Monterey/iOS 15 is that background images automatically sync across devices via iCloud. You’ve also got the new “Use Start Page on All Devices” option and a checkbox to turn on/off iCloud Tabs for the start page.

You can head to the bottom right corner 3-line icon to customize your start page, including the background image.

Safari’s new unified tab/search/toolbar

Just like Safari in Big Sur, you can right-click at the top to customize the new unified tab/search/toolbar with more buttons (or in the menu bar, click View > Customize Toolbar).

By default, the toolbar includes five buttons: Sidebar/Tab Groups, back/forward, downloads, share button, and new tab + icon.

Here’s a look at how it comes and what’s available when you customize:

If you choose to stick with the default Safari in Monterey, you’re getting the same tab UI experience you’re used to with macOS Big Sur and earlier.

But for the new modern UI, it’s quite an aesthetic change. Head to Safari > Preferences > Tabs > Compact to use the new design:

Using tabs and tab groups in the new Safari

You can drag tabs or the URL/search bar to the left to pin a tab/open page. However, the mechanics can feel a little clunky in the modern Compact UI. For example, reordering pinned tabs requires some precision and patience.

With the new Sidebar/Tab Groups button (in either the Separate or Compact UI), click the dropdown arrow to pull up saved Tab Groups or create new ones:

You can create a new empty tab group or quickly make a new Tab Group your existing open tabs.

As you’ve already guessed, you can make multiple tab groups to quickly switch between different sets of saved web pages to work and play more seamlessly.

Just click the Tab Groups drop-down arrow anytime to get back to your saved groups. And alternatively, you can click the Sidebar button to see your Tab Groups.

Finally, you can click the Tab Overview button (four squares icon) to see all open tabs.

Refreshed Sidebar

For the new Sidebar, you’ll see “Start Page” up top with your Tab Groups below.

Under that, you’ll see links that have been shared by others, then Bookmarks and your Reading List at the bottom.

When the Sidebar is enabled, you’ll also have the two-window + icon show up to quickly create a new empty tab group.

Creating Quick Notes

Quick Notes are new for macOS Monterey and iPadOS 15. There are a couple of ways to use the feature with the new Safari.

You can click the three-dot icon in the URL/search bar > Add to Quick Note with the Compact UI.

With the Separate tabs UI, you can click the share button (square with up arrow > Add to Quick Note).

Or, when you highlight text on a webpage and do a right-click, you can choose Add to Quick Note.

Safari in macOS Monterey wrap-up

After a lot of changes for Safari throughout the Monterey beta, Apple seems to have landed on a build that satisfies people who want the classic browsing experience and tab design as well as including an all-new UI for those ready to change things up.

Troubleshooting, safari 8.0.6, safari 7.1.6, & safari 6.2.6 released for mac users.

Release notes accompanying the small update mention that it “contains improvements to security”, making it recommended for all Mac Safari users to download

Mac users can find the update available now through the Mac App Store by going to the  Apple menu and visiting the App Store Updates section. The update is quite small and does not require a reboot, though users will need to quit out of Safari to install the update.

The bookmarks system on Safari 6.2.6 sucks. The bookmarks bar and menu only open as a side bar and are harder to read and require more steps to open and close them. Not only that the browser pinwheels and crashes on many sites. Programmers love to change things without improving a damn thing and often make things worse. This is especially true of Apple software.

Re this or thats better its a tool if you are most people you buy your tool at home depot if you are a cabinet maker you uses special tools. me id \f it give me my news and simple stuff thats all i need how bizzy could i be if my safari is so fast i am not saving lives with it

I’ve noticed a definite improvement, but, not complete (8.0.6/Yo). Part of the issue is probably Flash, which I wish was totally dead. If Hulu would let us watch free with Hulu app on ATV or iOS, I would be able to get rid of Flash on my Mac (you have to pay for Hulu+ for ATV/iOS…which I refuse to do, as you still get commercials/ads). As far as I know, there are no sites I use that depend on Flash, but, I may come across issues when I get rid of flash.

Yes, I could use Google Chrome, but, I just did a test, and it still uses twice as much processing power for same flash video played with Safari, as it uses emulation. So back in the Trash can for Chrome.

I noticed immediate problems with Safari’s update on both Yosemite & Mountain Lion…

Really, really, really wish Apple would STOP with these gimmicky new features and get back to building the MOST reliable OS in the world ( Yosemite has me to the point of considering Windows 10 for professional graphics work, when it’s officially released ).

What problems are you noticing on this update with Mountain Lion?

Side note: If you’re running 10.10.4, the update doesn’t show up at all.

Because for 99% of us, it works fine. It syncs open tabs, bookmarks, reading lists, and other key items across all of your personal Macs. Additionally, it’s built into the core of the OS, uses the least amount of system memory, isn’t prone to constant crashes.

Don’t be so narrow-minded. Just because YOU don’t care for something doesn’t mean it’s the same for everyone else.

And just because it works for you, do not assume it works for the other 99%. FAILed logic.

Well, it works for me, too. So . . . 98%.

Safari is still the fastest browser on the Mac that works with current codecs. I have not used Lynx, but, I looked at the link, looks very old school.

Apple releases Safari 7.1.5, and 6.2.5 betas to developers with new features and bug fixes

The latest Safari betas come one day after Apple released public versions of its Web browser to fix WebKit security flaws. Today's seeds for Safari 7.1.5 and 6.2.5 are compatible with OS X 10.9 Mavericks and OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, respectively.

Like previous Safari betas, Apple's most recent seeds ask developers to focus on a slew of testing areas, including using multiple displays with Smart Search, adding new Google accounts to Internet Accounts by visiting a Google website, navigation using VoiceOver, extension compatibility and general website compatibility. In addition, a number of focus areas involve WebKit assets.

Interestingly, the release notes state certain features are only compatible with Safari 8.0.5 for OS X Yosemite, including an "Add Image to Photos" context menu item, likely a replacement for the current "Add Image to iPhoto" option. The notation is yet another sign that Apple is preparing for a near future release of its new photo editing tool , which combines features from consumer app iPhoto with more advanced functions found in Aperture.

Developers can download the latest Safari betas through Apple's Developer Portal .

what version of Safari is in iOS 7.1.2

I'm trying to communicate with a site that needs a compatible browser, and since there are many iterations of Safari, I need to know which version is on my iPad. I can't find it going via " settings".

7.1.2 was the version available before the iOS 8 update.

Tap Settings > General > About then swipe down to Version .

Another one with scrolling stops in Safari. i am using Orion now, and waiting for a new version of Safari.

I'll join the choir. Web sites are intermittently freezing under Safari 17 (now 17.2.1) and Monterey (now 12.7.2). I cannot scroll; clicking on links doesn't work. Happens at diverse websites, but also sometimes when searching via Duck, Duck, Go. Occasionally, refreshing the page from the URL address bar works. Sometimes, opening up a new tab and entering a website there and then, IIRC, returning and refreshing works. The "solution" is to copy the web address, close that tab, and enter the address in a new tab. What a nuisance! I am glad to see that others are having the same problem!

I'm seeing still this in Safari 17.2.1 on macOS 13.6.3 if, and only if, I search from the address bar and also only with duckduckgo set as search engine in the preferences. Other search engines do not display this issue. Now, when I tried also google then bing and then changed back to duckduckgo this behaviour stopped. We'll see how long that holds. I've been running Ecosia for a while. ***Yeah, it's back already after a few hours ***

Same problem with Chrome and it is the only reason I have to use Safari. One could use an external password manager but I've yet to find one that can seemlessly replace the Keychain in the whole ecosystem. Click to expand...

What doesn't look good about it? I can't really parse it at all. My only guess is that Safari appeared to be making calls to a second CPU, and I only have one six-core. I just rolled the dice and installed Ventura. That's proved to be maybe not such a great bet after a couple of days ...

After some initial instability, Ventura has been stable all week. Also, I turned off "hide IP address" in Safari—that may have contributed to the Safari being more stable.

Writing to update. Safari 17.3 still has freezing issue on Monterey 12.7.3. E. g. DuckDuckGo stops updating screen content while Safari window is active. If focus is shifted to another app and back Safari updates scroll position and shows symbols entered into DDG search field.

Just tried Safari 17.3.1 in macOS 13.6.4 after the update and changed do duckduckgo as search engine and entered terms in the location bar. Scrolling works as expected. Finally! Nope, just one restart later and no scrolling with duckduckgo is back!!!
