Howdy Michele, I love to travel. I’ve read so many posts about travel gadgets, but you are the best one. Your article was beneficial in finding the necessary devices. I personally like an anti-theft shockproof backpack, which is ScanSmart TSA friendly and water-resistant. It is useful for everyone.

Thank you so much, Kim 🙂

' src=

Hello, I have gone through your guide and seems to be interesting though I have one more concern on the WiFi devices. Can you recommend me on the best Pocket Device that will work well on anywhere I travel. I have using AllDayWifi but its very slow on their international data plan. I have been considering RentnConnect though I know very little about it

Hi Collins, have you considered this Skyroam device ? It one of the leaders in the market and very compact.

' src=

What about this Trackimo 3G Travel Tracker device this has Light Exposure Sensor – detect/alerts when package or luggage is opened. I am currently using this tracker and i found this very useful to me every time i go travel around the world 🙂

Excellent addition Helen, thank you 🙂

' src=

A tracking device would be a great addition to this list.

' src=

Amazing! This makes traveling easier.

' src=

Definitely brilliant ideas worth sharing

' src=

This IS such a cool list! I thought I had everything, but then I found out the door travel alarm (never would’ve thought of it)!. And I wonder how good the neck support (#33) is because there were PLENTY of times I could have used something like that on my trips.

Hey Trang, the door alarm is such a great idea especially for those times when you just don’t feel safe 🙂 Is there anything you’d add to the list?

' src=

I just carry a small rubber door stop wedge.

' src=

WOW! This is one extensive list of all things travel and certainly one that I will be using to give hints to my friends and family round the holiday season. The new ScanSmart backpack along with the waterproof phone case and solar charger are on top of my list. However my top two purchases are going to be the smart suitcase and the backpack which are absolutely brilliant. Thanks for such a cool list.

' src=

Hi Michele, There are all great ideas. I have one more suggestion for you. Smart Blanket! I used it when flying to Zurich to see my son and his family. The plane was freezing, and there were no blankets to be had. I was the only one that was warm and cozy for the whole 8 hours. I love mine. Got it on Amazon http://amzn.to/2hTYlOP I paid $49.00 for mine. Think they are having a sale on them now. Hope you like my suggestion.

' src=

The door alarm and aeroplane pillow are a great idea to stay comfy and safe! I always take an extension lead when I travel; so that I have more plug sockets in a hotel room, and it also means you don’t need as many adapters when you travel. You also can’t go wrong with baby wipes and small-ish plastic bags in case a seat is wet, a bottle is leaking or you’ve got a mark on your clothes! ✈️?

All brilliant ideas Emily 🙂 Thanks for sharing. I love the baby wipes idea!

I was looking for ideas for gift basket for a coworker who is traveling across the country, and really loved your suggestions. It was the small ordinary things we usually overlook! Thank you

Graeme Stewart

Saturday 10th of April 2021

That's a lot of stuff to carry. I would reduce the bags to just one and save a lot of space and airline fees :)

You know that your phone has a flashlight right? That can replace the mini-light.

Otherwise, very helpful. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Stewart,

thanks for sharing your thoughts. I gave some options here, of course. Anyway, I still believe that a mini flashlight is one of the really useful travel accessories. It takes almost nothing of space and it can be helpful. It's mini. After all, we don't need to have our phones with us all the time. :-)

Thanks for reading and taking your time to comment! I appreciate it. Milijana

35 Travel Essentials for Any Length of Trip

cool travel must haves

For more of the Cut’s favorite fashion, beauty, and home finds,  sign up for the weekly  Cut Shop newsletter .

There’s something about traveling that is equal parts excitement and stress, especially when it comes time for you to bust out your suitcase and prepare to pack. What comes along with you can vary tremendously depending on the length of your trip and the occasion. Thankfully, the Cut Shop team has traveled far and wide, and has picked up a few tips, tricks, and essentials for packing well. Regardless of whether it’s a quick weekend escapade or a whole month abroad, here are the 39 best travel essentials worth taking along, listed according to the length of time spent away from home .

For Overnight Trips

Whether you’re only traveling ten minutes away for a staycation or venturing to a nearby city for a day, overnight trips can be just as challenging to pack for as longer ones. Our best tip is try to be strategic about stowing all the necessities in a larger tote ba g.

iMangoo Protective Cable Organizer Case

Keep all your chargers and cords organized and untangled in one place. This little case makes sure you can actually find what you are looking for, especially in the depths of a big bucket-shaped bag.

Hill House Home The Ellie Nap Dress

The Nap Dress is comfortable enough for any road trip or train ride or even to sleep in. You really can’t go wrong — it’s like wearing your pajamas but still looking totally presentable. We particularly like the wrinkle-resistant navy dress for easy wear on the road.

Baggu Go Pouch Set

This three-pack of pouches might be one of The Cut Shop ream’s favorite purchases. Perfect for everyday use, the pouches are great for housing everything from makeup to dirty clothes to receipts. We always have one in our bags, no matter if we’re leaving the house for a night, an hour, or a whole week.

July Everyday Garment Tote

Perfect for event-specific travel, this tote doubles as a garment bag, protecting those special-occasion outfits. It has just enough space to also pack a pair of shoes you do not want to commute in.

Saie Slip Tint Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35 Sunscreen

One of the best tinted moisturizers out there, this option from Saie offers hydration and some SPF and will give you light coverage with a dewy glow. When you can’t bring your entire medicine cabinet, this is a great option that combines a bunch of products in a multistep routine.

HoodHealth Stainless Steel

Because hydration is always important, especially when you’re traveling.

Leeshine Ice Roller for Face and Eyes

Just because you’re not doing your skin-care routine in your bathroom at home doesn’t mean your skin should suffer. This ice rollers will fit perfectly in your toiletry bag and come in handy first thing in the morning.

Emi Jay Big Effing Clip

Sometimes on those quick trips, we push washing our hair an extra day (or three) so we can leave all our heat tools at home. With some dry shampoo and a cute hair claw , no one has to know.

Weekend Trips and Excursions

Whether you are heading out of town for a wedding, trying to get away for a little R&R, or traveling for work, when it comes to packing a weekender or a smaller suitcase, organization is key.

Béis The Weekend Duffel Bag

There are so many options out there for weekender bags, but this water-repellent tote from Béis ticks all our boxes including the trolley pass-through pocket to attach to your suitcase and save your shoulders. This one is just over $100.

Guanda Car Vent Phone Mount

Most of the time, travel is associated with flying, but whether by choice or not, sometimes the trip involves hours of car time. A phone mount changes the game on a long road trip and is definitely safer.

Comrad Nylon Knee High Socks

For those longer flights where you are in a confined space and not moving around as much (looking at you, window-seat fliers), compression socks can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs and feet.

Loop Quiet Earbuds

Weekend trips can sometimes mean a jam-packed itinerary, so when you want to sleep, you want to snooze uninterrupted. Enter Loop, a reusable silicone earplug that allows you to get the ultimate fit (it comes in four sizes) so you can get in that power nap.

Le Specs Outta Love Sunglasses

Forgetting your sunglasses on vacation, especially when headed somewhere sunny, is a rookie mistake, which is why this pair from Le Specs is perfect to just keep in your weekend bag so you are never without.. They’re stylish, sturdy, and under $70 , in case you end up losing or breaking them.

Cadence Build Your 6 Bundle

Normally, travel containers are not the most stylish or multifunctional. But these Cadence capsules are both of those things. Unlike traditional travel containers, these can be used for anything from storing pills and skincare products to necklaces and hand cream. Plus, you can design your own set to include different labels and colors

Everlane the Relaxed Oxford Shirt

You can never go wrong with a classic button-up . It’s a must-have for any trip, especially a weekend one when space is limited. Wear it on its own, with a dress or pants, or as a bathing suit cover-up.

Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray

The Tower28 spray is our skin-care savior , and if you’re looking to pack minimally for weekend trips, this needs to be in the toiletry bag. Perfect for sensitive skin, it’s multifunctional, and a spritz delivers a refreshing dose of hydration and soothes stressed-out skin.

Kindle Paperwhite

Not only do books take up valuable real estate in a carry-on, they add a bit of weight too. A Kindle is so low profile and light that we do not even think twice about tossing it in our bag. It also saves us time doing the math on how many books we should be bringing on a trip because our next read is just a Wi-Fi connection away.

Anywhere From Five Days to a Week and a Half

A full-fledged trip that still limits you to a carry-on may be the most difficult to pack for. Europe,Cabo, our parents’ house, it’s all about making the most of the room you have, even if you can’t help but pack all your sunglasses , expensive skin care, and cute outfits.

Reformation Fantino Cashmere Collared Cardigan

This cashmere cardigan is amazing on its own or as a layering piece in case you get chilly en route or in your hotel room. When you’re packing a carry-on, the more pieces you have that you can wear multiple different ways, the better.

Dagne Dover Remi Glasses Case

Sometimes you just can’t decide which sunglasses to bring, especially if you are going somewhere extra-sunny. This protective case from Dagne Dover allows you to bring three pairs in a very compact and convenient case that is easy to hang up when you get to your final destination.

Away Bigger Carry-On

There is a reason you can’t travel without seeing one of these suitcases. It fits in the overhead bin of most major U.S. airlines and allows travelers enough room to store all their belongings while remaining light, sturdy, and sleek. Plus, it comes in seven attractive colors and has a USB external battery for those extra-long travel days. It is an essential for the majority of trips you will probably take.

Calpak Packing Cubes 5-Piece Set

We love using packing cubes when we need to keep a duffel bag from becoming total chaos or for just staying organized when we’re traveling somewhere where we will be doing a wide range of activities that require very different wardrobe options. These packing cubes from Calpak are cute and will help bring some order to a carry-on.

Aesop Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash

Whether you are in the window seat and do not want to disturb your neighbors to wash your hands or need to do a quick clean after pumping gas on a road trip, having some sort of hand sanitizer while traveling is a good idea. This one from Aesop obviously smells amazing.

Baggu Packable Sun Hat

Senior writer Sangeeta Singh-Kurtz swears by bringing this foldable sun hat no matter the amount of time you plan to spend in the sun. It packs up so small, it’s easily justifiable to toss in your bag. If nothing else, it’s cute for a photo op or two.

Two Weeks or Longer

Uniqlo Wide-Fit Pleated Pants

Wearing trousers on a plane not only saves room in your suitcase but also makes you feel more put-together on the go. These comfy but tailored pants from Uniqlo can be worn casually or dressed up, making them the perfect pair to travel in for long periods.

Merit Flush Balm Cream Blush

A two-in-one product that is perfect for face and lips is a godsend on the road, and this Merit lightly tinted balm is highly rated. It is the perfect product to throw in your bag for when you want to do a real quick touch-up, no matter where you are. Not to mention it’s one of our senior shopping editor’s favorite cream blushes .

Rimowa Classic Check-In L

The pinnacle of traveling well comes down to one word: Rimowa. The cases are classic, luxurious, and durable, though definitely a splurge. If you’re traveling for long stretches of time, and often, they can be worth the price point.

Wild One Travel Carrier

Pets under 20 pounds are allowed to fly in a carrier under the seat in front of you, and this stylish option from Wild One opens into a bed so your pet can relax at the gate before you both board.

4PCS Refillable Travel Perfume Spray Bottles

Most fragrances do not come in a three-ounce bottle, and it can be quite a risk to send a glass bottle in your checked bag, so it might be safer to opt for something like this. Even when you are not traveling, these little cases are convenient to throw in a bag so that you always can carry around your favorite scent.

A Month or More

We’re way past suggesting hand cream and new luggage because, at this point, you’re practically moving to your destination. These are the things that upgrade you from a casual traveler to a pro and will make your longer flights and longer stays more comfortable

Bearaby Travel Napper

Carrying an extra six pounds might seem a bit excessive, but if you’re on a long flight and you’re staying over a month in your new destination, you might as well be as cozy and comfortable as possible. This travel0size weighted blanket from Bearaby comes in its own duffel bag, so it can easily be your personal item or be checked in with no problem.

FunTouch Rechargeable Travel Makeup Vanity Mirror

Want to be able to still do full glam while you’re away? This rechargeable and slim travel vanity mirror will help your makeup look flawless no matter your lighting situation.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

You may have seen this on your TikTok FYP. It allows you to connect your Bluetooth headphones (hello, AirPod Maxes ) to airplane screens, so you can watch your favorite comfort movie or episode of Sex and the City without worrying about bringing a corded pair or needing to purchase those cheap plane headphones in the air.

Saatva Weighted Silk Eye Mask

Like a weighted blanket for your eyes, this eye mask is sleep enhancing (perfect for long flights and jumping through timezones) and made from super soft silk.

Tumi Just In Case Tote

Chances you’ll come back from vacation with more clothes than you went there with are high, so consider packing this foldable nylon tote to hold all your overstock.

Mejuri Travel Case

Travel with ease knowing that your necklaces won’t get tangled and all your earrings are safe and sound in one place.

Daily Pill Organizer

This pill case also came from our TikTok FYP and is small enough to fit in any purse, but has enough storage to hold all your medicine, vitamins, and supplements.

29 Essential Travel Items That Are a Complete Game Changer

Share with your friends!

Packing sucks.

You always feel like you’re forgetting something.

Or you over-pack and end up using only half of what you brought.

Packing for your next trip doesn’t have to be this way.

As a full-time travel blogger and after loading up my carry-on luggage dozens of times, I’ve learned to bring some essential travel items that keep me organized and play double duty so that I don’t bring stuff I don’t need .

Whether you’re packing for an international trip, a long flight or want to know what you should put in your carry on, there are some things you should never travel without .

Being prepared also means I save money when I travel, since I know I have everything I need and don’t have to worry about buying things on the road.

cool travel must haves

Avoid tourist tax and don’t pay double or triple what you should when you forget something simple like sunscreen!

(This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission if you make a purchase through them – at no extra cost to you. I only share products that I use myself and love, btw.)

This list shares my most unique items that every traveler should have that aren’t so obvious but make your life so much better and easier when you’re on the move.

You won’t find all the same-old, overdone, boring recommendations that are obvious like remembering to pack your phone charger or packing cubes.

TRAVEL PRO TIP: Packing last minute? A lot of the travel items on this list can be found on Amazon. And if you have Amazon prime, most items will arrive the next day. Sign up for a free trial of prime here (and then you can cancel your membership before the month is over).

Let’s get to my list of 29 essential travel items that will make your life way easier.

1. A Scarf With Hidden Pockets

This super sneaky scarf is one of my most recommended travel must haves.

There’s a hidden zippered pocket inside the scarf where you can store cash, keys, sunglasses, a passport and even your phone if you want to.

It’s perfect if you’re traveling solo and want to have your valuable items hidden but easily accessible.

Or if you’re worried about pickpockets, this scarf is a stealthy way to hide your things.

It’s probably one of the best travel accessories for women out there.

Infinity Loop Solid Color Scarf With Hidden Zipper Pocket For Women - Lightweight Travel Neck Wrap

The perfect travel accessory - discreetly hide your cash, credit cards, ID, jewelry and other lightweight items.

If you’re browsing a busy farmer’s market or at a crowded festival, it’s perfect for keeping your hands free and not showing off a flashy purse when you want to buy something.

Plus, it’s also the perfect air travel accessory, since it doubles as a small purse which won’t count as a personal item and it will keep you warm and cozy.

2. A Stuffable Neck Pillow

cool travel must haves

A stuffable neck pillow is my favorite item for packing light and saving money carry-on luggage fees.

You can easily fit several articles of clothing into this soft, neck pillow shell, and it doesn’t count towards your carry-on luggage.

In the neck pillow above, I packed:

  • One cardigan
  • One light athletic zip-up
  • Two t-shirts
  • Two tank tops

So if you’re only traveling for 5-6 days, you could fit your entire ‘top half’ of your wardrobe in this neck pillow, and it won’t even be close to being overstuffed.

I demonstrated packing this neck pillow in my YouTube video about packing light (without feeling like you’re packing light).

Buy this neck pillow on Amazon

3. Soothing Tea Bags for the Plane

Speaking of air travel accessories that you might not have thought about…I always pack my own tea bags with me when I travel, especially on flights.

Just ask the flight attendant for hot water and brew your own.

My favorite is Eucalyptus tea – it opens up your airways and helps prevent your nose from getting all stuffed up.

It helps soothe your throat too.

Traditional Medicinals Tea, Organic Throat Coat Eucalyptus, Throat and Respiratory Support, 16 Tea Bags

My throat always gets scratchy from all the stuffy, recycled air on the plane.

A soothing tea is also one of the most useful things for traveling if you’re prone to getting sick when you travel.

TRAVEL PRO TIP – If you’re an anxious flyer or have trouble sleeping on the plane, you HAVE to try the Sweet Slumber tea made with valerian root . This stuff will put even the most high strung traveler to sleep.

The main ingredient is Valerian root, which is also known as nature’s Valium.

And with some chamomile and lavender for calming, your slumber party is only minutes away.

If you can’t find tea bags, you can build your own or just pack loose leaf tea into a travel mug.

This is my favorite travel tea mug which comes with its own infuser.

So yeah, sleepy time tea is one of the most underrated but essential travel items in my opinion!

4. Solid Lotion Stick/Body Butter

Another one of my favorite items for travel is a lotion stick (instead of liquid lotion).

It’s one of the best products for travel because it’s not considered a ‘liquid’ when you put it in your carry on.

cool travel must haves

Plus, there’s no risk of it spilling or exploding in your bag.

Having lotion on you when you travel is always important, because your skin gets so dry from airplane travel or if you’re traveling in a lot of buses with the air conditioning blasting.

As this means one less liquid to pack in your carry on bag, it’s definitely an essential travel item for any trip I take.

5. White Noise Machine

Portable White Noise Sound Machine, 3 Soothing Natural Sounds with Volume Control, Sleep Therapy For Adults, Kids & Baby, Noise Cancelling for Office Privacy & Meditation

The sound quality on a white noise machine is so much better than anything you'll find on the phone apps.

No matter how comfy it is, sleeping in a different bed in a different location is never the same as sleeping in your own bed.

Using a white noise machine can help put you to sleep.

It covers up potentially weird sounds from your hotel room, and the variety of soothing sounds helps keep you asleep.

I like this compact white noise machine , which can also be hung.

I also like this one that changes color and doubles as a night light.

6. A Tassel USB Charger

Ok, this is a cool travel accessory that you will absolutely love. The USB cable and cord is cleverly hidden within the leather tassel .

Just clip it to your purse or your overnight bag and it’s conveniently available whenever you need it.

No messy cords to untangle, this is one of my newest favorite items for travel.

Lightning USB Leather Tassel Key Chain iPhone Charger, Compatible Cable with 7-Inch 2.4 Amp ChargeSync Cable for iPhone, iPad (Black)

Keep it clipped to your purse or travel bag for those 'oh no' moments when your phone is almost dead!

7. Microfiber Travel Towel

This is another one of those essential travel items that have a dual purpose.

First, being microfiber, this towel will be fast drying, which is important when you’re on the move.

The one I have is barely even damp by the time I’m done drying myself off.

Plus, if you’re traveling on a budget, I find that cheap hotel rooms have the worst towels that don’t really absorb.

And since they’re so compact, they make the perfect air travel accessory since it can double as a blanket when you need it.

Microfiber Towel Perfect Travel, Sports, Backpacking & Camping Towel, Fast Drying - Super Absorbent - Ultra Compact

Doubles as a blanket on the plane/train and also great if you're sensitive to the hotel towels that use too much bleach.

8. Compression Bags

Wondering how to pack your clothes for travel? Compression bags are the way to go.

Everyone loves travel cubes these days, but compression bags are so much better.

All you do is lay your folded clothes inside, then roll up the bag to push all the air out.

You are then left with super flat clothes that take up 50% less space.

They’re great for saving space and staying organized.

Plus, they’re clear -making your airport security experience go much more smoothly than the cubes which are usually opaque.

12 Travel Compression Bags Vacuum Packing, Roll Up Space Saver Bags for Luggage, Cruise Ship Essentials (5 Large /5 Medium/2 Small Roll)

Honestly, they’re one of the most useful things for travelling I’ve come across in a long time.

However, if you DO prefer packing cubes, I also use this set which have a compression component built in to them.

These cubes really are the best of both worlds.

9. A HeroClip Carabiner

cool travel must haves

This isn’t just any carabiner – this is a clip that hooks to almost anything, anywhere so you can hang your things and keep them off the ground.

I use this to hang my purse off the table at restaurants and in public washrooms when there’s no hook on the door to hang my bag.

It even hangs off the hinge of the door if there’s no gap to use.

It’s the perfect travel accessory to hang bags (backpacks, duffel bags, etc) off the floor when you’re traveling like when you need to change in a bathroom stall and there’s no hooks.

You can attach a water bottle to your bag, or even at the gym. It’s a great ‘gear holder’ for any item, anywhere.

These are so versatile.

Keep your bags off the floor! Use these to hook your purse on the table, hang your bag at a public restroom when there's no hook on the door, anywhere!

10. Luggage Tracker

Worried about lost bags? It’s an unfortunate reality that this happens, and when it happens to you it sucks. Especially when you’re starting your vacation.

Attach these smart luggage tags to your bags, and if they get lost, just activate the code on the website to start tracking.

Most bags are recovered within 24 hours.

Luggage Tracker, Key Finder, Smart Bluetooth Tracker Pairs with Apple Find My (iOS Only), Item Locator for Bags, Wallets, Keys, 4 Pack

Luggage trackers for half the price of AirTags!

Plus, you’ve got added security because you don’t have to write your phone number and address on your luggage tags, which is a dead giveaway that you’re not home to potential thieves.

If you’re a bit of an anxious traveler, these are definitely a must have travel item for peace of mind.

11. A Legit Carry On Bag

cool travel must haves

Another traveller essential is a high quality and trusty carry on bag.

There are tons of carry on bags out there to choose from, but I have to include the two bags I use on this list.

I only fly carry-on and never check a bag, and this bag (pictured above) has held up great.

I’ve taken it on several different airlines and have never had a problem.

It’s small enough that I use it for a weekend getaway, and big enough for packing two weeks worth of clothes.

This is the carry-on bag I use the most and has been featured on my YouTube channel!

12. Towel Clips

cool travel must haves

Towel clips are such a travel hack!

I use these at the beach, at the all-inclusive resort and on cruises!

You can even use them at the local pool or when you’re at the pool in Vegas.

They’re perfect for saving your towel on your lounge chair, so that you don’t have to leave items like sunglasses, books or sunscreen to save your spot.

I like these fun towel clips because they come in all kinds of fun themes – flip flops, pineapples, flamingos, etc!

The #1 best-selling toiletry bag on Amazon! It now comes in 12 different colors.

This is one of those travel products that everyone needs, but no one likes to spend the money on a good one.

Well, my life changed forever when I found this bag on Amazon that hangs from a hook or a towel rack.

It’s roomy enough to carry everything you need without being bulky.

It’s perfect for when you check into your hotel and realize there’s zero counter space for your stuff.

Just hang it from a towel rack or even the shower rod and you’re good to go.

14. A Multi-Tool That’s Safe to Fly With

SWISS+TECH ST50022 Stainless Steel 6-in-1 Key Chain Multi Tool, Polished Finish (Single Pack)

This multitool is TSA-compliant.

Pack one of these TSA-compliant multitools into your travel bag and keep it there!

The TSA allows you to fly with a multitool in your carry-on bag provided it does not have a blade and has scissors less than 4 inches in length:

  • “Multi-tools (multipurpose tools) with scissors less than 4 inches may be placed in carry-on bags.” – source: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/all

This one is TSA compliant as it doesn’t have a blade. But it does have tweezers, pliers, a nail file, etc.

It’s perfect for those small, inconvenient travel moments where a little tool would come in handy.

If you travel with a CPAP machine, it will fit on the bed shelf, too.

A lot of people use these for their RVs and travel trailers and attach them to the sofa.

18. Fanny Pack/Belt Bag

cool travel must haves

Fanny packs (or belt bags depending which generation you’re from) are in and I am SO okay with this trend.

They’re the perfect size for carrying your essentials without being too bulky.

I also love that it stays close to my body for feeling more secure and keeps my hands free to take photos or hold a drink.

You can go hiking with them, or when you sit down at a restaurant you don’t need to set it down anywhere.

A good fanny pack has been one of my most useful items for traveling.

I love my black lululemon fanny pack. I wear it for all my Las Vegas trips (perfect for pool parties, too).

But this fanny pack comes in 18 different colors and is the perfect bag for a music festival this summer!

22. Slippers

cool travel must haves

If you’re coming back to your hotel room after a long day of walking and adventures, it’s so nice to take your shoes off.

But I never trust how clean the floors are in hotel rooms, which is why I won’t ever go bare foot and not even in my socks.

So I pack a pair of slippers to wear in the hotel room and problem solved!

These slippers have memory foam , so they’re ultra comfy for sore feet (and they come in 10 colors)!

23. An e-SIM Card

If you’re visiting another country, an e-SIM card is the easiest, most convenient and usually the most affordable way to get data on your smart phone.

Airalo offers data plans in 190 countries around the world.

All you do is visit the website, download the app, choose your country and the amount of data you need and activate your eSIM.

No need to pre-buy a physical sim card.

Plus, if you’re not sure how much you need, if you run out, you can easily add more with the press of one button.

As a Canadian, I’ve used Airalo eSIM cards in Mexico , France , Germany and the United States .

24. A Bag That Fits Under the Airplane Seat (Personal Item)

cool travel must haves

Airlines are jacking up the prices on luggage and carry-on bags. On short trips to save money, you could try and only bring a personal item that fits under the seat.

This bag is the largest one I can find that fit under the seat, but still holds lots!

I packed cowboy boots, a jacket, sweater, one pair of pants, two pairs of shoes and a few small travel accessories.

View the bag here in 20 different colors and patterns.

Travel Duffel Bag, Sports Tote Gym Bag, Shoulder Weekender Overnight Bag for Women

This is my number one travel bag. It's small enough for your second carry-on item (fits under the seat) but large enough to fit enough for a weekend trip. It has an internal wet pocket if you need to travel with a wet swim suit!

25. Luggage Cup Holder

26. Toiletry Skins for Leak-Proof Travel

cool travel must haves

Grab these viral travel accessories!

These are plastic ‘skins’ that you slip over top of the tops of your liquids bottles (almost like a condom, lol)!

The idea is that they’re watertight and prevent a bottle from opening or leaking.

View the toiletry skins here .

I also love this set of LeakLocks® that were featued on Buzzfeed!

27. Airplane Foot Hammock

cool travel must haves

This foot hammock has been the biggest flying hack when it comes to comfort.

I sling it behind the tray table in front of my and now my feet are elevated.

This helps with circulation and my legs are so much more comfortable.

The foot rest is adjustable and it folds flat so it takes up no room at all.

View the foot hammock I use here .

28. A Flight Deal Subscription

cool travel must haves

What if I told you there’s an app that finds you crazy discounts on flights (we’re talking an average of 50-70% lower) – especially business class flights!?

It’s called FareDrop .

It’s an app (or desktop version) that sends flight deals straight to your phone (or email) based on your travel goals.

After you sign up for your free account ( right here ) you simply set your home airport along with places you want to go.

23 Best Travel Accessories for Every Kind of Trip

Whether you’re crammed in economy class or on a long drive, these gadgets and accessories will make the time pass quickly.

best travel accessories

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. Why Trust Us?

Whether you’re a frequent traveler or you save up for one trip every few years, chances are you already know that what you pack impacts your comfort, your enjoyment, and, perhaps most important, your stress levels both while traveling and when you’ve actually settled in at your new destination. That’s why it’s critical to pack useful, helpful travel accessories. Take the wrong ones, and you may find yourself carrying extra weight for gear you never end up using.

As a full-time travel writer, I enjoy the wonderful perk of being able to travel quite a bit. While chasing down stories, I’ve stayed in five-star suites in the Maldives and slept on the top bunk of a 15-hour budget sleeper train in Vietnam . So I’ve experienced quite a variety of travel conditions while using what’s likely hundreds of travel accessories in the process.

Over time, I’ve been able to narrow down my must-have travel accessories to include a perfect blend of ones that are useful, easy to carry, and multifunctional. For example, a packable mini- backpack can serve as a lightweight bag for day hikes or as an extra carry-on if you buy too much abroad.

These are the 23 best travel accessories I recommend to all my friends planning their next weekend or bucket-list getaways.

Best Travel Accessories

  • Best In-Flight Bluetooth Audio Adapter: Twelve South AirFly Pro
  • Best Travel Footrest: Airplane Footrest
  • Best Cord Organizer for Small Items: Bellroy Classic Pouch
  • Best Containers for Toiletries: Cadence Weekender Bundle
  • Best Blanket for Cold Flights: Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket
The Expert: I’m a freelance travel writer and editor who usually focuses on adventure travel. That’s led me to take some pretty lengthy flight patterns (most recently, 54 hours of travel on the way to Rwanda) and fairly remote road trips (through central Alaska). But traveling frequently doesn't mean anything goes. Like everyone else, I have my personal annoyances while traveling: I get cold easily, I’m sensitive to noise when sleeping in new places, and I always need to be able to work on-the-go. What all of that means is that my experience with travel accessories isn’t just about finding those that make flights more comfortable, but also those that improve my productivity, help me enjoy myself in new destinations, and make packing as painless as possible. I think I've used just about every type of travel product out there, and truly feel the ones I have selected are the best of the best.

What to Consider When Buying Travel Accessories

The best travel accessories eliminate the inconveniences and annoyances of life on-the-go. For me, this includes headphones that drown out engine noise (or crying babies), containers that allow me to bring my favorite soap and shampoo on flights, and anything that makes long trips more comfortable. Consider what you value most and look for accessories in that space.

No matter what you’re in the market for, don’t overlook size, especially for liquids. The TSA limits your liquids to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) per container and prefers them all packed into one quart-size bag. As for luggage, make sure any travel bags you intend to carry on are no larger than 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and checked bags no heavier than 50 pounds. Even if you aren’t checking a suitcase, you’ll have an easier, more comfortable experience with less to lug around. Most of the accessories below are relatively lightweight, but they’ll add a few pounds combined.

Finally, a word on price. Some travelers don’t want to spend too much money on items they might accidentally leave in a seat-back pocket, whereas other people tend to take better care of things that cost more. I generally recommend ruling out the very cheapest items in most categories, lest you find your shampoo bottle started leaking mid-flight.

How We Selected These Travel Accessories

orvis packable jacket

In addition to my own experiences using these products as a travel writer and gear tester, I weighed consumer reviews, investigated market research, and did a thorough evaluation of each product's price, features, and overall value. If you’re looking for stuff to make your next trip easier and more comfortable, start with these recommendations.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

AirFly Pro

Given how small and lightweight this Bluetooth adapter is, I make sure to pack it for every flight where I expect to watch a movie. The adapter plugs into airplane screens and pairs via Bluetooth so you can use your preferred noise-canceling earphones with the in-flight entertainment.

It has excellent battery life, but the connection does suffer from some lag. I’ve noticed a very slight audio delay in older planes—and you may need a two-prong adapter on older entertainment systems.

If you plan to use the AirFly only for sending audio to your headphones, you can get by with the less-expensive AirFly Classic, which has slightly better battery life. But if you want to use Bluetooth to send audio to the AirFly (for example, to play audio from your phone in a car without built-in Bluetooth), you’ll need the Pro.

Sekoess Airplane Footrest

Airplane Footrest

My foot hammock is probably the nerdiest travel accessory I own, but it's a lifesaver—or should I say leg saver. The adjustable-length hammock attaches to your airplane seat's tray table and eases pressure on your low back, knees, and glutes.

I'm much less stiff after flights when I use the foot hammock and have never noticed it bothering the person in the seat in front of me, even while making adjustments. You can also buy versions with more rigid footrests, though I find the more flexible, hammock-style footrest is easier to stuff into a carry-on.

Bellroy Classic Pouch

Classic Pouch

Whether it’s a road trip or an international flight, I always use a small, simple zippered case for my tech gear so I don’t have to fish around for it in the bottom of my bag.

Cord organizers have become trendy lately, but some have so many straps and pockets that I still have to search for the exact item I need. Instead, I just use a small case like the Bellroy Classic Pouch. Since I have a separate case for my computer charger and cord, this one has enough space for most of my other small items, including the AirFly and Bose earbuds in this roundup. It has a few basic organizational pockets and zips wide enough so you can find what you need in a hurry.

Oh, and if you want a case to fit your computer charger as well as all your other travel accessories, never fear: There’s a larger option. The Bellroy Tech Kit is deeper and longer, with a clamshell-style opening, so it can hold slightly larger accessories like computer charger cubes or a GoPro camera.

Cadence Weekender Bundle

Weekender Bundle

Carry-on-only travelers are familiar with packing small amounts of their favorite toiletries, but mini squeeze bottles make it challenging to use gels and creams that get stuck to the bottoms.

Fortunately, you can alleviate that issue with Cadence’s magnetic honeycomb-style capsules, which stick together and take up little space. These convenient containers are made from ocean plastic cleaned from beaches, and you can customize the tile labels and colors of each capsule. I recommend the six-pack for carrying both hair and skincare products, but you could connect three times that number if you so desire.

Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket

NanoLoft Puffy Blanket

I carry a packable insulated blanket on almost every trip, even to tropical destinations. Aside from being useful as a plane blanket, it comes in handy in hotels where the A/C is definitely working or when there’s only a sheet on the bed.

I like the Rumpl NanoLoft Puffy Blanket since the fill is light and compressible. It’s on the smaller side at roughly 4.5-feet by 3-feet, but it’s worth the trade-off for the packability (less than 4-inches wide when packed.) I usually carry it in one of the bottle pockets on the side of my carry-on backpack.

Because it’s not a full-size blanket, the NanoLoft is best as a lap blanket on cold flights or car rides, and works well as a pillow when packed. For more coverage, consider the full-size NanoLoft (6- by 14-inches packed, $179+). I recommend getting a tiny stuff sack or compression packing cube to make it into a more manageable carry-on size.

Osprey Ultralight Stuff Pack

Ultralight Stuff Pack

The Osprey Ultralight Stuff Sack is proof that the best travel accessories don’t have to be high-tech or overly complex—just useful. This is a water-resistant, packable backpack with mesh straps, a side pocket, and one small internal pocket. That’s it.

Because it’s so simple, it folds down incredibly small to about 5- by 5- by 3-inches. I often wear it when sightseeing around a city when I don’t want to carry a purse or shoulder bag.

But even if I don’t have a plan for using it, I toss it in my luggage every time. It can come in handy when you’re packing in a hurry and can’t fit everything as neatly into your bag as you did the first time, or if you’re road tripping and want to pull over and walk to a quirky roadside attraction. Most of my other ultra-packable bags are totes, but I prefer the security of a zippable backpack.

Cabeau S3 Evolution

S3 Evolution

These pillows are phenomenal, and reviewers say they're the only way they can ever get some sleep when crammed into a middle seat.

An adjustable headrest strap keeps the pillow upright and in place, and the comfortable foam never seems to lose its shape. Though most people wear the Evolution around their neck as intended, it works well as a traditional pillow, especially considering the gap in the middle leaves room for bulky over-ear headphones.

Alongza Portable Charger

Portable Charger

I take thousands of vacation photos per trip, and often, the only camera I’m carrying is the one in my cell phone. To avoid running out of battery before getting back to my hotel room, I carry the ridiculously small Alongza charger.

It holds about two phone charges, and it won’t power bigger devices like laptops. But because it’s roughly the size of a credit card (though a smidge thicker), it’s easy to carry and is able to charge my phone while walking around.

I find most power banks too big to fit in my pocket, but this is probably the tiniest one I’ve ever used. I also like the built-in UBC-C and Lightning connectors so I can leave my cords at the hotel.

HiBar Maintain Shampoo and Conditioner Set

Maintain Shampoo and Conditioner Set

If carrying a 3-ounces of shampoo won’t get you through a whole trip, consider using a solid shampoo and conditioner bar that won’t raise any eyebrows going through the TSA checkpoint.

There are five different sets for different hair types, each safe to use for color-treated hair. Be sure to toss them into a plastic bag if you’re planning to pack them before they’re dry.

I have very thin, fine hair, and find the HiBar Volumizie set works just as well as the far more expensive salon set I use in my home shower.

Bose QuietComfort Noise Canceling Earbuds

QuietComfort Noise Canceling Earbuds

I love my over-the-ear headphones, but on long flights, they can start to feel a bit sore on my ears. I took a risk on the Bose QuietComfort headphones, since at nearly $300 they’re even more expensive than Apple AirPods. But I’m glad I bought them.

They provide a level of noise-cancellation I never thought would be possible from an in-ear headphone, and the case can fully charge the headphones three times before it needs to be plugged in again—enough to get you through even the longest of trans-Atlantic flights and chatty seatmates.

The only real minus is the size, as they don’t sit as closely to your head as the popular Apple AirPods. But the sound quality more than makes up for it.

Hydro Flask Wide Mouth Flex Sip Lid Bottle

Wide Mouth Flex Sip Lid Bottle

At this point, it’s a given to carry a reusable water bottle, but I’ve started bringing my own coffee mug too, especially since I like my coffee piping hot. In many countries, coffee is served in a teacup and not guzzled like I’m used to, and having my own mug is a great way to fill my coffee once at the hotel without bothering the staff to bring more and more.

I’ve recently been using the Hydro Flask Stainless Steel Mug. It keeps coffee hot, but most important, it has a tight seal. I can buy coffee in the airport, put the mug in my carry-on, and pull it out mid-flight without worrying that it leaked in the bag I have shoved under my seat.

Sony WH-1000XM4 Over-Ear Headphones

WH-1000XM4 Over-Ear Headphones

When it comes to audio, two big names still reign supreme, at least in my book: Sony and Bose. Bose makes my favorite in-ear headphones, but Sony’s WH-1000XM4 is far and away the best over-the-ear option. The battery life is impressive at 30 or more hours per charge, and the charging is quick—20 minutes powers about 8 hours of listening.

The noise canceling is fabulous, as I’ve learned when trying to talk to someone wearing them, and they fold into a flat case. That said, they’re still a bit on the bulky side, stored or worn, but if you’re planning to carry over-the-ear headphones, their size probably isn’t your top priority.

JBL Clip 4 Speaker

Clip 4 Speaker

I work remotely and set my own schedule, which means I’m often working for a few hours here and there in hotel rooms on vacation. I also love to listen to podcasts when I’m getting ready in the morning, so I always make sure to pack a small Bluetooth speaker.

The JBL Clip 4 has better sound than expected for its size, including strong bass. The built-in clip makes it easy to hang on a shower rod or suitcase handle, and because it’s waterproof, it’s ideal for use around pools, beaches, hot tubs, and whatever other amenities you may avail yourself to on vacation.

The negative: it uses a lithium ion battery, which means you have to take it in your carry-on, not in your checked bags.

Panasonic Lumix G7 4K Camera

Lumix G7 4K Camera

I’m constantly amazed by the quality of photos you can get from an iPhone, but when it comes to shooting in suboptimal conditions (or trying to show depth and scale in landscapes), you’ll probably want a more advanced camera.

The Lumix G7 is a ridiculously good camera with a surprisingly low price, especially considering it’s mirrorless, which makes it lighter and smaller than non-mirrorless options. It shoots photos and videos in 4K, has Wi-Fi so you can send your photos straight to your phone or computer, and has multiple auto settings for beginners, including one specifically for night-sky photography.

It’s packed with features and is the number one camera I recommend to all travelers who want to take better travel photos without spending more serious money on a camera, even if you don’t have any actual interest in using its more professional features.

Peak Design Packing Cube

Packing Cube

I’ve become a big fan of Peak Design. The brand's packing cubes are the its first item I ever tried. They have strong zippers that don’t seem to get caught in the fabric while compressing as much as other cubes, and you can fit far more than you’d expect into each one.

I prefer the small size, as it’s easier to stack in a suitcase and fits better in a backpack or shoulder bag. These packing cubes are also light and thin, so you can throw an empty one in your bag (as I found especially useful in Patagonia) just in case you end up buying an extra sweater during your travels.

Pro packing tip: Don't pack small clothing items like underwear, socks, and swimsuits in the cubes. Instead, shove them into negative space around the cubes to maximize all available luggage areas.

Thule Subterra Carry-on Roller

Subterra Carry-on Roller

Hard-sided carry-on spinners have become all the rage in the last few years, and while I do love my July bag, I’ve found two drawbacks to hard-sided bags: the second set of wheels eats into the luggage space and there’s no ability to stuff them into an overhead bin or car if they don’t quite fit.

Fortunately, I’ve had the Thule Subterra for a while now and it’s become my most-used bag. That’s thanks to a built-in compression panel with pocket; a small front pocket for passports, keys, and sunglasses; and durable back wheels that seem to have no problem crashing over curbs and steps.

I’ve also come to appreciate its slightly smaller size. While some travelers may balk at the idea of not maximizing their carry-on capacity, I find that it's actually easier for travel, especially when I see my fellow travelers’ larger bags getting forcibly gate checked on smaller planes.

Baseus Blade

Blade

I’ve used plenty of backup chargers while traveling (who hasn’t?), but the Blade from Baseus is the one I rely on most. That’s partially because I have a computer with a USB-C charging port, and the Blade is optimized for quick charging of USB-C computers.

I can charge my MacBook Pro from 0- to 100-percent with about a 20-percent charge left on the Blade (which is enough to almost fully charge my iPhone).

Other features I appreciate are its slim design (so I can travel with it in my laptop pocket), a display that shows you both how much battery is left and how much time until the Blade is fully charged, and the fact that it takes only about 1.5 hours to fully charge it.

If I use the entire capacity on a flight, as long as I have at least a 1.5-hour layover, I can be back up and running on the next flight.

Ombraz Armless Sunglasses

Armless Sunglasses

I've broken more than a few pairs of sunglasses by shoving them into the pocket of an overstuffed bag or sitting on them at dinner if I put them in my back pocket after a day of sightseeing. That's why when traveling, I nearly always carry Ombraz sunglasses. If I bring a fancier pair, it stays in a hard case in my luggage.

The smartly designed Ombraz shades have a soft adjustable cord in place of arms, so they’re nearly impossible to break or bend. They slide into a flat padded case and come in five unisex styles. You can also buy side shields (ideal for reflective surroundings, like snow or water) and have your prescription added.

The only downside is that you’ll need both hands to put them on, but to me, it’s worth it. I’ve had the classic pair for about three years, and they haven’t showed much wear or abrasion—but there’s a lifetime guarantee on the cord and frame if they ever do.

CM Pack of Two Mini Pouch Case Bag

Pack of Two Mini Pouch Case Bag

I almost always have my laptop with me when I travel, and since the chunky MacBook charging cube and long cord are too bulky to store with the rest of my small cords, I used to just toss them into my bag. But then I found these tiny travel pouches sized for a computer power adapter.

I can easily fit my computer power adapter and cord in one pouch, and now, I don’t have to pull everything out of my bag to untangle the laptop cord, or use tweezers to remove dirt from the bottom of my backpack that got stuck in the charging port.

The pouches in this set are as simple and lightweight as can be, which is why I like them. They’re also useful for other small items such as GoPros, flash drives, memory cards, and camera batteries.

23 Best Travel Gadgets That'll Make Your Next Trip Even Better

For more organized, manageable, and unforgettable adventures.

This cohort of travel tech is also constantly evolving, and it's increasingly becoming more portable: Handy enough to fit in your carry-ons or use on the go. Altogether, the best travel gadgets can make your trips more organized, manageable, and unforgettable—just better through and through. Hence, from tools you'll actually use during transportation or overnight stays, to devices that'll help you enjoy sceneries of a foreign land to the fullest, we recommend these 23 best travel gadgets below for every type of traveler and journey. Grab a cool instant camera , a portable WiFi hotspot , a universal power bank , or even a pair of binoculars, for example, then you'll really be bon-voyage-ing.

JEPWCO G4 Pro Anti Spy Detector

G4 Pro Anti Spy Detector

You never know what kind of creeps are lurking at your hotel room or AirBnb. Hence, a wireless hidden device detector that'll blow the gaff on those pinhole cameras, audio bugs, and trackers. And, it doesn't look like a detective's walkie-talkie, which is cool.

Therabody SmartGoggles

SmartGoggles

The last row of economy feels like first class when you put these on. They calm you down or put you to sleep with massages around your eyes and temples.

Leica SOFORT 2 Instant Camera (Black)

Leica SOFORT 2 Instant Camera (Black)

Most polaroids are too big and bulky to really enjoy. For any vacation, you should either get a disposable camera or this brand new Leica point and shoot. It takes digital photos you can develop later, but it can also print those photos immediately onto little polaroids.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

AirFly Pro

Simply put, it's a TikTok viral gadget that'll connect your AirPods —or any wireless headphones and earbuds—to the airplane TV. A godsend for your inevitably long, dull flight across the country, or the globe.

The Nori Press

The Nori Press

An iron and an ironing board are rarely guaranteed, so plenty of fashion types carry a steamer with them. The Nori Press is the best clothes steamer out there because it combines the features of steamer and iron. It's lightweight and packable, but it can set a nice sharp crease.

furid Airtag Wallet

Airtag Wallet

There's no reason to add any extra stress to your trip. Get an AirTag wallet and save yourself from a succession of mini heart attacks.

Omnicharge Omni 20+ 20000mah Power Bank

Omni 20+ 20000mah Power Bank

A portable charger on the road or in the air will prove a life-saver during those unexpected power-off moments. The Omni 20+ is one almighty power bank capable of charging your cameras, drones, laptops, and phones simultaneously, at up to 100W—one of the fastest speeds we've ever seen. It's got ports of all kinds for that matter, ready to lend a hand to all the heavy travel tech you'll bring along.

DJI OM 5 Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer

OM 5 Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer

Not just any selfie-stick. Use DJI's smart gimbal that is anti-wobbling to up your photography or vlogging skills to match even the pros. The ActiveTrack algorithm will automatically follow main objects in the frame for an HD focus. They can be walking, running, swimming, zig-zagging... This gimbal don't miss.

Bellroy Tech Kit

Tech Kit

We won't tell you what iPhone chargers or power adapters to get—you probably already have the best. But we do recommend a carry-on organizer for all your essential tech accessories, and Bellroy's tech kit has a place for every possible one you might need while traveling.

EPICKA Universal Travel Adapter

Universal Travel Adapter

Maybe if all these heads of state and government just agree upon one shape of input/output plug, we'd have less international conflicts? Before then, grab one—or more—of these all-in-one travel adapters to, IDK, bridge the international relations?

TUMI Just In Case Tote

Just In Case Tote

Alright, this is pushing the definition of gadget, but hear me out. This nylon tote packs down to the size of a book. Slip it into any suitcase or backpack, and forget it's there. Then—if you have extra stuff to bring home or just pack more lazily—pull it out, expand it and toss all your leftover stuff in it. It's my favorite travel hack product.

JBL Clip 4 Portable Speaker

Clip 4 Portable Speaker

Speaker convenient enough that you can clip onto your backpack or pant's belt loop is one that'll soundtrack your excursion. Not to mention JBL's Clip 4 is one with a durability rating of IP67 and surprisingly punchy audio.

Cadence Starter Set

Starter Set

I talked about these little to-go skincare containers in our editors' travel hacks story . Instead of using drug store travel-sized products, you can take your expensive hair and skin care regimes on the road with you.

Apple AirTag, 4-Pack

Of course, you have to get some AirTags. Four is the perfect number, because you can insure you never lose your wallet, passport, carry-on, and checked bag.

Trova Go Biometric Stash Case

Go Biometric Stash Case

Trova's portable biometric safe is for travelers who keep essentials with them as they wander through a whole new city or countryside of beautiful landscapes—so... Any traveler? Only you can access what's inside, so you can fully let down your guards and actually enjoy the trip, stress-free.

Bose Alto Audio Sunglasses

Alto Audio Sunglasses

Flexing designer shades on the go is pretty much any traveler's second nature. Bose's classic-cool smart sunglasses , with open-ear audio built in to play music only for you, will save you a pair of headphones at that, while letting you stay alert (of those pickpockets, specifically).

Vortex Optics Crossfire HD Binoculars

Optics Crossfire HD Binoculars

So, when you're at the top of Lady Liberty, you're able to get a clear shot of what's happening down there through its 10x magnification—and maybe spot your long-lost cousin? Or for when you're at Yellowstone and need a HD view of what's two miles ahead before venturing farther into the wild.

Solis Lite Hotspot & Power Bank

Lite Hotspot & Power Bank

The last thing you need while traveling is to go offline—especially if you don't speak the local language. Thus, a WiFi hotspot , like the Solis, which is one of the easiest to operate. Just connect it to the mobile app and pay for the data, then off you go—web surfing, messaging, or any easy Internet usage. Cell carriers be damned.

Travel Must-Haves: Cool Gizmos for Every Traveler

Last updated on March 20th, 2024 at 04:40 pm

These cool travel must-haves are such delights to bring wherever you travel. Nifty, handy, and useful, they make travel comfortable and easier. So you get to focus on the important stuff like sightseeing and getting the best travel experience there is.

So whether it’s for you or for someone who loves to travel, don’t miss out on what may just be your next travel savior.

travel must-haves

1. Pocket-Sized Cellphone Stand

You know how tiring it is when you’re watching a movie on your phone during, say, a long flight or what seems to be an endless train ride? It’s frustrating trying to keep it propped up against something when it just keeps on falling off. Well, those days are gone because this pocket-sized cell phone stand would let you enjoy looking at your phone hands-free.

cool travel must haves

It is, as I’ve mentioned, pocket-sized and foldable for easy storage. You can keep it in your purse, even in your pockets! And it can be used for tablets, too, like iPads or Samsung Galaxy.

And even if you’re not traveling, it’s still useful as well. Place it on your desk at work or home.

2. Wearable Blanket

I don’t know about you, but I get cold easily. But maybe even if you’re someone who doesn’t, you can’t still escape the chill that makes you swiftly reach for a blanket when you’re inside an aircraft. Sure, some flights, especially the long across-the-ocean ones, do provide blankets, but it’s not the same as these wearable blanket thingies.

For one, the former doesn’t keep you covered enough when sitting on an airplane. Second, they keep falling off whenever you finally drift off to sleep, making you wake up to a blanket on your feet and feel cold. And lastly, you’re not sure if they’ve been washed well.

cool travel must haves

So I like these wearable blankets. They’re oversized and made of microfiber, so they’re fluffy, plush and comfortable, even luxurious. They don’t drag on the floor (which is a big problem with regular blankets) and they come with a hood and pockets, so your head and hands are covered as well. Plus, they’re easy to clean–just toss them in the wash and it’s good to go. You can use them at home, too, when not traveling.

3. Insulated Water Bottle

If you’re not careful, beverages can make a dent in your budget during travel. You’re always on the go, so you’re always thirsty, but even if you’re not, being relaxed (as you tend to be when traveling) has this way of making you crave something nice to drink. So you end up buying a coffee here, a cool drink there, another cuppa later, and then before you know it, you’ve just exceeded your daily food allowance. Ha.

So I make sure I make my own coffee or pack my own juice to save money. And this insulated stainless steel water bottle is one of the travel must-haves that would help you do just that.

cool travel must haves

It helps keep beverages cold for 24 hours and hot for 12. So even if you’re on the go, you can still have your drink the way you want it to be.

4. Slip-on Footwear

Make getting through airport security a less tiresome experience with these slip-on shoes. You don’t have to tediously take off and put back on again cumbersome footwear as these only need tugging off and on. It also has a cushioned footbed for added comfort.

cool travel must haves

Here’s another style for ladies that’s more formal- ish .

5. easy crossbody.

Your day things are all in one place in this one-fits-all crossbody bag. With several compartments, you can place all your important possessions like passports, wallets, cards, and more in them. It has RFID-protected card slots so your card information is safe. Plus, it’s a crossbody, so it is easy to carry and also secure.

6. noise-canceling earbuds.

These noise-canceling earbuds are perfect when you want some shut-eye when traveling like when you’re in an airplane. It silences the outside world, but it also has a mode where you can hear voices or announcements in airplanes or trains.

cool travel must haves

7. Packable Puffer Jacket

This puffer jacket does the job of keeping you warm during travel, yet doesn’t take up much space in your luggage. It’s lightweight and folds easily inside the small pouch it comes with. You can even throw it in your purse–that’s how super handy it is! It’s perfect, especially when you want to pack light. It’s waterproof, too.

cool travel must haves

8. Convertible Duffel

A duffel bag that doubles as a backpack? Yes, please!

That’s right. You can turn this duffel bag into a backpack. A duffel when you need lots of things to carry, or a backpack as a day bag. It is so versatile that you need only one bag for your trip! And, it’s water-resistant!

cool travel must haves

9. Travel Makeup Brushes

One of the travel must-haves you shouldn’t go without is a pouch of makeup brushes handy enough to fit in your purse.

cool travel must haves

10. Travel Pillow

You might think that a travel pillow is the most cliché gift there is, but that’s not true with this travel pillow.

cool travel must haves

The trtl pillow is different since it’s scientifically proven to put your head in a good and ergonomic position when you’re sleeping upright. The combined presence of internal support, extra cushioning, and fleece in this pillow makes sleeping a comfortable experience. And it isn’t bulky like other travel pillows out there since it looks just like a scarf, so it’s easy to store in your luggage or purse.

Which of these cool travel must-haves would you like to get?

Don’t forget to share this post or save it for later!

The 31 Best Gifts for Frequent Travelers

A selection of our favorite gifts for travelers, including Aesop travel cosmetics, a book on national parks, an eye mask, and more.

By Samantha Schoech and Dorie Chevlen

Give the globe-trotter in your life a gift that will appeal to their sense of worldly wonder. These items will make flights, long lines at customs, and hotel stays feel less arduous and more comfortable. You could also give your favorite traveler special mementos and experiences to celebrate past trips and anticipate future expeditions. Whatever type of traveler you’re shopping for, there should be something here to suit their wanderlust.

Luggage helper

A person pulling a suitcase on wheels that has the Cincha Travel Belt bag attached to the handle.

Cincha Travel Belt

This wide nylon strap has a sturdy buckle to keep your shoulder bag, backpack, or carry-on firmly attached to your roller bag, for smoother trips through the airport.

Buying Options

Anyone who travels has surely precariously perched their carry-on atop their rolling suitcase, only to have it topple, swivel, or lurch. Solve that annoyance with the Cincha Travel Belt , a useful (if unglamorous) offering. The concept is simple: This adjustable nylon strap cinches a smaller bag to the telescopic handles of a suitcase, thereby freeing up a hand, shoulder, or back. Yes, your traveling friend could use a bungee or even a rope for that purpose, but this item has a few touches that make it worth the upgrade: The sturdy metal buckle releases like butter, and a hidden elastic loop keeps the belt attached, even when it’s unclasped. Yes, this is a practical gift, but for the right traveler, it will be a real gem.

The Penkou Portable Neck Fan in front of a blue background.

Penkou Portable Neck Fan

This fan’s battery lasts all day, and several accidental drops haven’t killed it. Also, it fits comfortably around the neck without being heavy, loud, or excessively gusty.

This past summer, heat records broke across the globe, and many travelers reported they found it difficult to stay cool and comfortable on the go. New York City’s own heat wave prompted associate staff writer Thom Dunn to explore the world of wearable neck fans , including the Penkou Portable Neck Fan . And the Penkou model, with a ring of 72 air slots that softly blow air up toward the head (but not directly into the face), was his pick. It weighs only about half a pound, and due to its smooth plastic design, it’s barely noticeable against the neck and shoulders. There’s one large button on the front right, making it easy to cycle through the fan speeds. The rechargeable battery lasts up to 16 hours, and the fan is compact enough to slip into a carry-on.

Handy sanitizer

A person's hands refilling a bottle of Noshinku Hand Sanitizer with a Noshinku refill pouch.

Noshinku Hand Sanitizer

This flat, pocket-friendly hand sanitizer comes in sophisticated scents like vetiver, eucalyptus, and bergamot. And it’s refillable.

Traveling requires a lot of surface touching: airplanes, subways, taxis. If the pandemic taught us anything, it was that we should clean our hands as often as possible. The lovely-smelling Noshinku Hand Sanitizer is an FDA-compliant germ-killer that also contains stuff like jojoba, rosehip, argan oil, and aloe, to keep skin from drying out. Each canister is about the size of a credit card, though not quite as slim. So it can be slipped into a back pocket or a purse pocket. The best part is the canister is refillable , so your recipient can continue to use it for a long time.

Reading light

Our pick for best reading light overall, the Glocusent Bookmark Style Reading Light, shown clipped onto a book that is open to a page in the middle.

Glocusent Bookmark Style Reading Light

This chic, compact device offers five light settings, and the power indicator makes it easy to tell when to charge it.

(limited colors)

Whether your favorite traveler is reading on a plane, train, or bed, or they’re just rifling through their suitcase, they will surely appreciate some extra light. The tiny Glocusent Bookmark Style Reading Light is our pick because it’s so lightweight and easy to carry. It twists and adjusts, so the light covers a full page, and it has simple buttons, for changing the brightness and temperature of the lighting. This lamp is so small it can clip to a paperback without weighing it down, and it fits in a pocket.

Trip planner

A spread of two pages about Alta Badia in Italy, taken from Lonely Planet’s Where to Go When travel book.

Lonely Planet’s Where to Go When

This visual travel guide suggests events and destinations for every month of the year. It’s as much an inspiration as it is a planner.

Graphically exuberant and endlessly inspiring, Lonely Planet’s Where to Go When is arranged by month, so travelers can figure out where to head on any given day. Miami’s Art Deco Weekend is in January. Consider Botswana’s Okavango floods (the best time for dugout canoe safaris) in June. This book further categorizes potential trips by budget, family-friendliness, and “expensive but worth it” (a July road trip along the Westfjords of Iceland, for example). Even if the recipient is more of an armchair traveler than a frequent globe-trotter, this book is sure to kick their wanderlust into full gear.

Luggage tracker

Apple AirTags next to each other.

Apple AirTag

AirTags leverage Apple’s huge network of devices to track down a lost suitcase, and they’re impressively accurate at pinpointing an item’s precise location.

Whether it was misrouted by the airline or left behind in a station waiting room, a lost suitcase can really dampen a trip. The Apple AirTag —our favorite Bluetooth tracker —does not work with non-Apple products. But if your beloved traveler owns an iPhone, AirTags are better than their competitors in just about every way—from ease of setup to location accuracy. They track belongings almost in real time. And if an airline does lose your favorite traveler’s suitcase, they will have an accurate map to point to when trying to locate it. Wirecutter staffers have also had success with slipping AirTags into the pockets of their restless kids.

Arrive refreshed

The Peace Out Puffy Eyes box next to the patches.

Peace Out Puffy Eyes

Each box contains six pairs of under-eye patches, which are infused with caffeine and hyaluronic acid to depuff tired, travel-weary eyes.

Nobody looks—or feels—as fresh as a daisy after a flight. But the Peace Out Puffy Eyes cooling under-eye patches—a longtime favorite of supervising editor Hannah Morrill—can help with both. Each box contains six pairs of crescent-shaped patches, made of a gelatinous (but not icky) biocellulose gel. The cooling effect is certainly pleasant enough. But the ingredients (caffeine, for a temporary tightening effect, and hydrators glycerin, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid) are what really do the trick for travel-worn eyes.

Safe drinking water

A person refilling a lifestraw water bottle with water from an outdoor faucet.

LifeStraw Go Series

This water bottle’s microfilter straw protects against all sorts of contaminants—from microplastics to E. coli. And it makes everyday tap water taste better.

To turn non-potable water into fresh, clean drinking water, staff writer Samantha Schoech swears by the LifeStraw Go Series water bottle (she recently sent her son off to Central America with one). Its replaceable filter removes 99.9% of contaminants and protects against common waterborne pathogens. This bottle is a little pricey, but it eliminates the need for single-use plastic bottles. And each filter cleans 1,000 gallons, which translates to roughly five years of daily use. (To learn a little more, see our article on the LifeStraw Max Water Filter .)

Plane entertainment

cool travel must haves

Nanoblock Birds Rosella Collection Series Building Kit

Flat bags packed with tiny building blocks keep bored hands and minds occupied on long treks. The resulting builds are about the size of a fist.

A person can only watch so many in-flight movies. On long hauls, we find these Nanoblock mini building sets to be just the ticket for restless hands and minds. They’re engaging but not mentally taxing, and the sets (ranging from about 100 to 200 pieces) are small enough to lay out on a tray table and later carry home in luggage. Finished pieces—from musical instruments to cats to pizzas—are only about 3 inches tall.

Power on the go

A Zendure SuperMini 20W.

Zendure SuperMini 20W

This is the smallest and lightest power bank we’ve tested. It has USB-C PD and USB-A ports, and it comes in several colors. It also has rounded edges, so it’s easy to slip into a pocket.

May be out of stock

At some point, your constantly on-the-go pal will require some extra juice, and a portable charger will ensure they have it when they need it most. We like this power pack , which also happens to be the smallest model we tested. But there’s more to love than just its pocket size. The Zendure SuperMini 20W ’s USB-C Power Delivery (PD) port can charge most handheld devices (and recharge the power bank itself) at top speed, and the USB-A port can handle any older, non-USB-C devices. In other words, this thing is fast and versatile.

An unmissable luggage tag

An Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag.

Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag

This brightly colored silicone tag displays the owner’s name but keeps other personal information out of sight.

There are a few features that make the Ovener Silicone Luggage Tag superior to pricier models in our testing . For starters, due to its sturdy, silicone-and-metal cable construction, it can withstand crowded overhead bins and rough tarmac treatment. Then there’s the issue of privacy: Although the owner’s name is always fully visible, address details are revealed only after you unscrew and remove the metal cable. Also an upside: This tag comes in a range of eye-catching colors. So it can help someone spot an otherwise-nondescript suitcase on a fast-moving carousel.

Premier toiletry transport

A State Bags Bensen Dopp Kit in blue, green, and yellow color block.

State Bags Bensen Toiletry Kit

This bag includes a detachable pouch and other organizational options, so packing is easier for both long and short trips.

For all manner of travelers, the State Bags Bensen Toiletry Kit is the most versatile one we tested . If your traveling pal takes longer trips and often checks their luggage, this bag folds up to stash larger items, like full shampoo bottles or contact solution; the hook hangs smoothly from a towel bar, for easy access. Our favorite feature for light packers: a removable translucent plastic pouch that holds up to four 2.7-ounce travel bottles (ideal for carry-on security checks). Available in a dozen prints and patterns, the bag also looks great and feels like a fancy, will-last-a-lifetime gift at a relatively modest price.

Small servings

Cadence Capsules

These leakproof plastic travel containers hold half an ounce of solids, liquids, or capsules; magnetized sides keep them compact and easy to locate.

If your favorite excursionist wouldn’t dream of using hotel shampoo or missing a day of their skin-care regimen, a set of Cadence Capsules will serve as an anxiety-abating treat. (Less-particular travelers will appreciate our favorite simple toiletry bottles .) All six hexagonal cases are leakproof and magnetic on every side, and they can be filled with about a half-ounce of whatever the traveler’s heart desires—from serum and dry shampoo to omega-3 capsules and CBD gummies. The well inside each capsule has rounded corners, so the recipient can scrape out every last daub of their precious potions. Each vessel can be customized with a “tile” or label. But unless you know your recipient very well, we suggest giving a gift card , which will allow them to choose their own colors and tiles.

Organized packing

The Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set.

Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set

Simple and solidly constructed, these packing cubes maximize luggage space and keep everything organized.

Even for the most enthusiastic traveler, packing remains an uphill battle. The Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal Cube Set (one of our favorites ) can make the task infinitely less arduous, and some of our testers found that this set made packing borderline pleasant. The three cubes are made of sturdy polyester, so they stay upright when empty, and the mesh windows let travelers easily scope the contents. With a clamshell design, these cubes fully open on three sides, so deeply stashed items are easily accessible. Another welcome note in the age of lost luggage: Pouches can help your favorite traveler compress stuff into a single carry-on.

Safety socks

Two pairs of Sockwell's Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks.

SockWell Men’s Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks

These compression socks offer the perfect combination of function and price. They are made of a merino wool blend, which is typical of more-expensive options.

cool travel must haves

SockWell Women’s Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks

For a true frequent flier, wearing a great pair of compression socks is both a safety and a comfort measure. Long flights can cause deep vein thrombosis and gravitational oedema (the technical term for swelling caused by sitting around too long); compression socks facilitate circulation and reduce the instances of both. SockWell Lifestyle Firm Compression Socks (available in both men’s and women’s sizes) are comfortably snug, and they’re made of a luxe, merino wool blend that hugs without constricting. The socks are cozy on a nippy flight, and they come in a handful of prints and colors that aren’t as institutional-looking as those of other compression socks we tried.

A hands-free journey

A person is standing outside, wearing the Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack in sage green.

Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack

This neoprene pack blends style and function, fitting everything from a large wallet to a makeup kit—with room to spare.

For those who like to explore new places but don’t want to carry a purse, a modern, cool fanny pack is just the right accessory. Of the 22 we tested, the Dagne Dover Ace Fanny Pack offers the best marriage of handsome looks (eight suave colors!) and plenty of storage space—it can readily hold a smartphone, a passport, a wallet, and hand sanitizer, and there are extra pockets for a transit card and some change. Wide straps make this bag comfortable to carry, and the neoprene material (think wetsuit) will keep gear dry if the weather shifts unexpectedly.

A cozy cardigan

A person wears the White + Warren Essential Cashmere Trapeze Cardigan in a blush color.

White+Warren Essential Cashmere Trapeze Cardigan

This simple, luxurious, and flattering open-front cardigan will add a layer of warmth and elegance to a trip abroad.

There is nothing worse than boarding a flight and realizing you miscalculated just how chilly airplane AC can be. One of our favorite cashmere sweaters , the White+Warren Essential Cashmere Trapeze Cardigan is a simple and luxurious piece that will keep a traveler cozy both in transit and once they’ve reached their destination. This sweater is lightweight but soft enough to nap in (it can double as a blanket, thanks to its drapey shape), and it looks polished when layered over a tee or under a jacket. Available in six muted tones, the cardigan has an airy construction, so it can fold down smaller than expected for easy packing.

Colorful little notebooks

The Pantone 10 Notebooks set, which is a box with 10 brightly colored notebooks in it.

Pantone 10 Notebooks

Each brightly colored, pocket-size notebook has 48 grid-dot pages.

Not all travel journals need to be works of art, layered with watercolor and ink. The Pantone 10 Notebooks set includes 10 brightly colored, 4-by-5½-inch soft-cover notebooks that are perfect for jotting down ideas, an itinerary, or travel memories. Each notebook slips nicely into a tote or a pocket and has 48 grid-dot pages of decent-quality paper. Send your traveler out into the world with a couple of these and a good pen , and see what they return with.

Armchair travel to Japan

A family gathered around a table, playing Tokaido, the board game.

Set in Edo-era Japan, this game revels in the simple pleasures of traveling—in this case, from the city of Kyoto to Edo (what is now Tokyo).

Players journey along the Tokaido road with other travelers, stopping at hot springs, stores, temples, and inns (and collecting souvenirs and eating delicious meals as they go). The ultimate goal is to be the “best traveler,” or to have the richest experience by seeing, eating, or doing the most during your trip. The game itself is beautifully designed and simple to play; it’s not deeply competitive, though there is some strategy involved in attempting to win. The pleasure of playing Tokaido comes from relaxing and accepting the pace of the board, and letting the game reveal surprising discoveries—much like travel itself.

A window out into the world

A view into a window with flowers and a house. Words in the middle read: Open a new window somewhere in the world.

With each click in this free app, a view opens from a real window somewhere in the world, complete with sounds of birds, traffic, or blessed silence.

Sometimes the best gift is to remind someone that the world is both larger and more accessible than they realize. WindowSwap offers a strangely compelling experience, allowing someone to take a break to stare out a window in cities like Copenhagen, Prague, and Manila. Some of the window scenes are tranquil, others are not, but all suggest there’s an infinite number of new things to see, wherever you are. The app is free, but for $5 a month, your armchair traveler will be able to look out all of the windows ever uploaded, create unlimited bookmarks and playlists, and even access a back button so they can spend a little more time gazing out a favorite window.

Noise-cancelling bliss

A pair of Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

These over-ear headphones are traveler-friendly, thanks to their noise-cancellation feature and lightweight, comfortable design.

A traveler can’t turn down the volume of an airplane’s engine, but the right pair of noise-cancelling headphones can. Such headphones are designed to reduce low-pitched droning sounds—in other words, exactly the kind of noise encountered in an airplane. After reviewing travel gear for more than six years, we think the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 are the best to help travelers relax and block too-loud plane noise.

An eye mask and a travel pillow for catching z’s

A Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow.

Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask

This lightweight, contoured mask comfortably fits a wide variety of face shapes and blocks light well. It’s best when you’re sitting upright or sleeping on your back.

cool travel must haves

Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow

This compressible pillow has tall, memory-foam walls, and it offers more support than any other pillow we tested.

It’s perhaps an indictment of air travel in general that many travel items are designed to mitigate the environment, whether it’s the noise, the light, or even the cramped seats of an airplane. The Nidra Deep Rest Eye Mask , a Wirecutter favorite , features contoured eyecups that rest around the eye sockets, instead of directly on the eyelids. By combining this mask with noise-cancelling headphones and a pillow, a traveler will be about as close to a sense of privacy as one can find on an airliner. For a headrest, we like the Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam Travel Pillow . It’s simple to wear, doesn’t interfere too much with headphones, and provides support even when the wearer is sitting upright.

Tiny white noise machine

A person's hand holding the Yogasleep Travel Mini Sound Machine.

Yogasleep Travel Mini Sound Machine

This sound machine is about as small as the palm of a hand and weighs less than 5 ounces. And it features a USB-rechargeable battery.

There’s no guarantee that your beloved traveler’s hotel or Airbnb will be as quiet as it promises to be. A small, portable sound machine may create enough white noise to drown out sleep-disturbing intrusions. The Yogasleep Travel Mini Sound Machine is from the same company that makes the classic Yogasleep Dohm , which we recommend . The Travel Mini has six sound options, including white noise, brown noise, and three nature-inspired sounds. It also acts as a gentle night-light, with three dimmable options. What’s better than the gift of a good night’s sleep?

A game about the birth (and death) of words

cool travel must haves

Those who enjoy language immersion (and disorientation) will appreciate this card game, which has players generate a unique dialect.

Part of the experience of traveling to another country is feeling lost in its language, and Dialect can help fill the gap. This game involves the birth (and eventual death) of a language and the culture that created it. At its heart, Dialect—which requires almost no setup but plenty of imagination—is as much a discussion of what language is and why it exists as it is a game. It’s also good for last-minute shoppers: Order the standard physical edition, and you’ll get a digital copy, too (online access is emailed immediately, so your loved one can start figuring out how the game is played).

Tapas for Two Gift Box

This gift box for two takes you on a Spanish food journey, including favorites such as jamón serrania and chorizo.

Our kitchen team is wild about the Despaña Tapas for Two Gift Box , which offers a seemingly bottomless assortment from a famed Spanish food importer. (The box is among the other great options in our favorite gift baskets guide .) Staffers were particularly smitten with the anchovy-stuffed olives, trio of Spanish cured pork, and delectable Cabo de Peñas tinned sardines. The cornucopia of savory treasures comes in a brown paper box tied with a red ribbon, and there’s an option to add a card. In short, this box offers all of the interesting stuff your favorite traveler would grab off the shelves from a small grocery store en España.

Travel posters with classic appeal

cool travel must haves

Anderson Design Group World Travel Posters

These archive-quality, vintage-inspired prints depict destinations worldwide, and they come in a variety of sizes.

Years ago, senior staff writer Kit Dillon’s father went to Cuba and saw a clay statuette of Fidel Castro for sale. Kit said that when the vendor told his father the price, he said, “Castro no vale tanto” (translation: Castro isn’t worth that much). That may seem risky for an American to say while traveling alone in Cuba, but the statuette is here now looking at Kit, so somebody appreciated the joke. Ever since, Kit said when he finds a small token of Cuba—like this art print —he sends it to his father to remind him to take the trip again one day, only this time with Kit. For its World Travel Poster series , the Anderson Design Group created nostalgic images that hearken back to another era of travel—and they make an excellent promissory note for a trip to come. The collection currently encompasses every country in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Central, South, and North America, and it will eventually include every country in the world. The prints come in six sizes, and the images are available on canvas or metal.

Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set

This 14-pan watercolor set renders plein air painting possible, thanks to a slide-out palette, a water dish, and a quality brush.

Any traveler who’s interested in creating their own travel journal needs the right materials. The Leuchtturm1917 Notebook features thick, ink-proof paper, which works very well with pen and pencil. And as long as the artist isn’t too heavy-handed, it can also accommodate some light watercolor washes without warping. Your loved one can brighten their works with the Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set . This small, travel-friendly set of high-quality watercolors comes with everything a painter needs to get started (except the paper).

Cutlery to go

The Hydro Flask Flatware Set, displayed next to a plat on a dinner table setting.

Hydro Flask Flatware Set

This three-piece stainless flatware set helps climate-conscious travelers avoid single-use plastics, and it comes with a Velcro carrying case.

Airport food has come a long way. What hasn’t progressed: the flimsy and environmentally deplorable single-use plastic utensils you have to eat it with. Portable cutlery will give your recipient a dignified way to dine on the go. Wirecutter editor Ria Misra recommends the sturdy stainless Hydro Flask Flatware Set , which comes with a full-size fork, a knife that’s strong enough to butter a muffin (but that won’t alarm the TSA), and a spoon that’s perfect for ladling soup. This set also comes with its own carrying case, so it won’t get lost (or separated) in the dark recesses of your carry-on.

A pretty passport cover

Two hands hold a bright green Tusk Siam Passport Cover.

Tusk Siam Passport Cover

This elegant goatskin passport cover comes in 11 zippy color combos, and it won’t fade or scuff, even after years of traveling.

A bright passport cover will make it easy for your traveling pal to quickly locate their passport in a bag at the airport (or at home, when it’s shoved in the back of a drawer). Supervising editor Hannah Morrill loves the Tusk Siam Passport Cover , which is made from supple goatskin leather and comes in nine cheery color combinations. (Some other versions we’ve tried have a translucent pouch; in theory, this sounds ideal for flashing the relevant page at customs, but in practice, the cover ends up smudgy and embedded with crumbs.) Hannah reports that even after years of use, the slim folio looks clean and crisp. Plus, there are two inner card slots, which are excellent for stashing any stray forms you’re asked to hang onto at the airport or on the plane.

We love finding gifts that are unusual, thoughtful, and well vetted. See even more gift ideas we recommend .

Experience F1 at the Miami Grand Prix

cool travel must haves

If you already live in Florida or can get there relatively easily, this one's for you. Talk about super last minute, but if your mom is a race fan, going to the Miami Grand Prix this weekend could be a check off the old bucket list. It’s the only race in the U.S. this spring, the next race stateside will be in Texas at Circuit of the Americas in October. As with anything last minute you’ll end up paying a bit more than if you had planned this Mother’s Day gift out a bit ahead of time, but can you really put a price on a gift to the woman who raised you to be an F1 fan? I say no.

To find any available hotels for this weekend check out Expedia.com or Vrbo if you’d rather stay at a unique Miami home.

Hit the slopes for some spring skiing in the Rockies

cool travel must haves

Skiing in May? With the amount of snow the Rockies have seen this month, it is entirely possible. Ski resorts like Copper Mountain, Breckenridge and Winter Park are estimating mid-May, so a Mother's Day weekend ski getaway could be entirely possible. Just d on’t forget the sunscreen.

When it comes to where to stay at a ski resort, it's hard to go wrong with a site like Vrbo. There are hundreds of options still available this late in the season at a variety of resorts. A quick search of Breckenridge Ski Resort for Mother's Day weekend shows over 300 properties available, from a huge 20-person ski-in ski-out villa only a few steps away from the slopes to smaller condos averaging less than $100/night before fees.

Road trip through Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park

cool travel must haves

Most people in the United States are familiar with Yellowstone National Park, the nation’s first national park. Filled with geysers, waterfalls, hot springs and streams, not to mention thousands of species of animals and plants, Yellowstone is an incredible place to take a road trip. Nearby Grand Teton National Park is less known but still quite popular. Shots of the Tetons towering over lakes and meadows have long filled rolls of film and memory cards.

As spring arrives and the snow starts to melt, it can be a great time to visit either of these parks, though I wouldn’t blame you for postponing your trip until summer has arrived — as of this writing there is still over 10 feet of snow on the upper mountain at Jackson Hole Ski resort right outside GTNP. The best way to visit both parks? Probably an RV from RVShare.com. Think of it as Turo but for RVs. With so much of both parks to explore, you’ll constantly be on the move; renting out an RV to stay in during the entirety of the trip means you won’t have to keep packing and unpacking as you move from place to place. There are plenty of options to choose from, from towables to Class C motorhomes. You can even get a destination delivery if you don’t want to bother moving it around.

If an RV isn’t your style, or you’re going to stay in one spot for a while, Vrbo is another great option. Unlike AirBNB which offers private rooms for rent, meaning you’re sharing your vacation with someone else, with Vrbo the entire house is yours . Whether you want to stay in a rustic cabin inside the National Park or this luxury mountain modern home is more your speed, Vrbo has you covered.

Stay in a vintage Airstream outside of Yosemite National Park

I’ve always loved the idea of camping with my family. I am very comfortable sleeping in a tent, mostly due to the fact that once I am asleep I am dead to the world for the next 7-9 hours, especially after a long day of hiking. Not everyone feels the same way, though, preferring a mattress to a sleeping pad. That’s where a place like Autocamp Yosemite comes in. Just outside of one of the world’s most known national parks is a fleet of vintage, retrofitted Airstreams.

Featuring air conditioning and heat, memory foam mattresses, Egyptian cotton sheets, coffee service, a private kitchenette and a luxurious shower in a private spa-esque bathroom, these Airstreams offer glamping in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Outside of the Airstream, Autocamp offers a heated pool, self-serve breakfast and a coffee service. Everything to pamper Mom.

Road Trip around Iceland then spend a relaxing spa day at the Blue Lagoon

cool travel must haves

This one is for the more adventurous moms out there. The land of fire and ice has gotten more and more popular than when we first visited back in 2017 and for good reason: stunning landscapes, mountains, hundreds of waterfalls and very few crowds. Many cities now offer nonstop flights to Iceland. Get a seat on the north side of the plane for a chance to see the northern lights on your way to Reykjavik. Once you land, get in a camper van that you’ll call home for the next few days, or hop behind the wheel of one of the many 4x4s that we don’t have here in the states and take off.

Whether you’re interested in waterfalls or whale watching, glacier hikes or diving between tectonic plates, you can do it in Iceland. If you do go the camper van route, I highly recommend stopping at Blue Lagoon on your way back to Keflavik Airport at the end of your trip for a luxurious spa experience.

Essential RV Camping Gear for Your Next Adventure

Thermacell mr300 portable mosquito repeller.

I t's part of the RV deal to get respite from bug bites while inside, but when heading to the picnic table for dinner at dusk, the outdoors is significantly less pleasant. Enter the Thermacell Mosquito Repeller , one of the best RV must-haves, which uses heat to disperse bug repellent over a 15-foot area. Get one for the campsite and another one to take on bike or kayak rides. Our Shopping Editor tested it and attests to its efficiency and near-magic ability.

Rumpl Original Puffy Blanket

This gorgeous camp blanket is perfect to layer over the shoulders or onto the lap on a cool night while sitting around the campfire. Made entirely from recycled bottles, Rumpl blankets are water-resistant and machine-washable. Even better, they come with a 100-night return policy to make sure the buyer really loves it.

YETI Roadie 48-Wheeled Cooler

When RVing , finding ample fridge space is an anomaly. Think of this enormous, portable cooler from YETI as a backup fridge. Wheel it out to the campfire for constant access to cool drinks (it holds 42 cans plus ice using a 2:1 ice-to-can ratio). Make good use of the wheels and take the cooler to the fishing site for easy access to snacks by the river.

Berkley Travel Water Filter

Water sources change with every new campsite hook-up: some are tastier and safer than others. Use this no-electricity-required gravity filter to remove more than 200 common contaminants and keep water potable and fresh. Just pour the tap water into the top of the stainless-steel filter and dispense from the spigot below.

Villey Portable Camping Table

Not your average picnic table, this collapsible table folds small enough to fit into most cramped spaces (plus it's only 10 pounds). Perfect for a dinner table, set the tabletop height at 17 inches (if you're sitting on the ground), 24 inches or 27 inches (for meal prep or dining in chairs). The heat-resistant, waterproof aluminum tabletop makes clean-up a quick wipe and done—a true gift for any camper .

The James Brand The Redstone Knife

There's always a cord that needs shortening, a s'mores stick that needs sharpening or a wayward vine that needs taming at camp. RV must-haves aren't complete without a knife. Find plenty of uses for this gorgeous, 2.5-inch-blade pocketknife . We love it for its compact size, strong steel blade and smooth close.

Anycell Vehicle Cell Phone Signal Booster

The reality of a weekend in the wilderness is that sometimes cell service is spotty. This is both a blessing and a curse, of course, but for safety's sake , or if someone needs to dial into a last-minute Zoom call while out in the woods, this cell phone signal booster is compatible with all carriers. Just put the antenna on the roof and plug it in.

Camco Scrub Mat

Help the RV feel more like home while simultaneously reminding people to wipe their feet with this door mat that traps dirt and debris. Add it to your list of discounted camping gear and take heed of the saying on the mat that life is better at the campsite.

Silonn Portable Ice Maker

One way to be an organized traveler is to think ahead. And since most RV fridges don't have ice makers, a portable one like this countertop version from Silonn covers your bases. Add two liters of water into the tank and enjoy the first batch six minutes later.

Use the control panel to select cubes in two sizes. Whether you wake up to nature with an iced coffee in the morning or sip on a cold drink after a day exploring, this ice maker is one of our RV must-haves for a reason.

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

I'm a Jersey Girl who grew up spending my summers at the shore and have since been to beaches on all seven continents, so I know what essential accessories you need to have a successful day on the beach. From easy-to-use canopies to waterproof speakers to beach games for every age, beach gear can vastly increase your fun in the sun — or keep you cool in the shade.

Here are some of my favorite products that I personally use at the beach. Whether you want a cooler that will keep your 'claw cold all day or a reclining chair with all the bells and whistles, this is your guide to planning the best beach day of your life.

Best Reef-safe sunscreen

Hawaiian tropic mineral sun milk body lotion spf 50.

It smells heavenly, absorbs easily, and leaves skin silky smooth.

The pump can leak.

Our favorite reef-safe sunscreen has a leg up on the competition — it doesn't leave a chalky white cast on your skin, as many mineral sunscreens do. It also has a non-greasy feel and a hydrating effect, which we consider a crucial element of any sunscreen. With 80 minutes of water resistance, it’s a must-have for ocean swimming .

Travel + Leisure / Jessica Juliao

Best Facial Sunscreen

Supergoop unseen sunscreen spf 40.

It absorbs so quickly, it feels like you're wearing nothing.

It's a chemical sunscreen, and it's only water-resistant for 40 minutes.

Since I was a kid, I've hated the greasy, icky feeling of sunscreen. These days, I'm thrilled that "invisible" sunscreens exist, and my favorite right now has to be Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen. While most sunscreens are marketed as lightweight non-greasy, I find those claims to be largely untrue — but not here. The gel-like sunscreen applies clear (no white cast!) and absorbs immediately, leaving my skin feeling soft and velvety, as if it were a moisturizer rather than just a sunscreen. If I were to critique it at all, I'd have to note that the sunscreen only lasts 40 minutes in the water, so you'll need to reapply regularly if you're sweating or going for a swim. (And to be fair, you should be regularly reapplying anyway.)

Best Spray Sunscreen

Naked sundays spf50+ glow mist top up duo.

Naked Sundays

It can be applied on top of make-up so you can re-apply all day long.

This Glow Mist is designed to use on top of other sunscreens and shouldn't be applied as a base layer.

As someone who hates the sensation of sunscreens, I find spray sunscreens to be marginally better than lotions, simply because I don't have to rub it in. I can air dry and hope that the product doesn't feel greasy. But with Naked Sundays' sprays, I'm delighted by the gentle mist that doesn't immediately feel sticky or oily on my skin — in fact, it's even moisturizing thanks to the addition of hyaluronic acid. There are two versions of this sunscreen, one for your face and one for your body, and both feel refreshingly lightweight, leaving a gentle glow to your skin. Something else I like about the product is its scent, which incorporates Australian botanical extracts for a fruity effect. The most important thing to know about this sunscreen though is that it's not designed to be a base layer. Instead, it's a top-up spray to be used over a base layer when you reapply throughout the day.

Best Cooler

Yeti hopper flip.

It keeps refreshments ice-cold for hours in the sun, floats, and is watertight.

Although we love that it's easy to carry, family-size loads may call for a cooler with wheels.

If you want your drinks to stay frosty no matter how high the temperatures get, you can't go wrong with Yeti. With the brand's renowned durability and floatable design, the Hopper Flip is also the perfect choice for boat trips and other rough-and-tumble water adventures. A special zipper lubricant is included so struggling with the watertight build never stands between you and your seltzer.

Best Beach Canopy

Lightspeed outdoors quick cabana beach tent.

It's easy to set up, spacious, and water-resistant.

The stakes have a tendency not to stay put, but the sandbags keep the tent secure.

After hitting the beach with the Lightspeed Quick Cabana, you won't know how you ever survived without it. In addition to being lightweight, easy enough for one person to quickly set up, and packed with pockets, this tent has three windows that can be opened for ventilation or closed when you need some privacy to change out of a wet suit before driving home. We also love that the water-resistant cover keeps things dry when you get caught in the rain.

Best Waterproof Speakers

Ultimate ears wonderboom 3.

Ultimate Ears

It's engineered to produce high-quality sound in outdoor spaces and boasts a long-lasting battery — plus, it floats!

It doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles for true audiophiles.

When it comes to travel-friendly speakers, I always think easier is better, and it doesn't get easier than this waterproof speaker. It takes about two seconds to connect a phone (at a distance of up to 130 feet), and the controls are super simple: there's a power button, a Bluetooth connection button for pairing, a play/pause/skip button, and big plus and minus buttons for volume.

The speaker also features a secret weapon: flip it upside down and you'll find the "Outdoor Boost" button, which adjusts the sound for outdoor use — you'll probably want to use this feature for your beach days. You can also pair the speaker with another one to double up on volume or provide stereo sound. As for the quality of that sound, I find it to be perfectly suitable for a beach day. Plus, it's IP67-rated, meaning it's protected against dust and water.

Best Beach Chair

Tommy bahama backpack beach chair.

It’s lightweight and has backpack straps for hands-free carrying.

It's tricky to fold and unfold the chair at first.

There's a reason you see these chairs all over the beach. Between their backpack straps for easy carrying, handy pouches for storage, and full recline for the ultimate sunbathing (or beach napping), they truly hit all the marks. Overall, they're quite lightweight, which makes toting them from the parking lot to the beach a breeze.

Travel + Leisure / Karen Chen

Best Recliner

Ostrich deluxe 3-in-1 beach chair.

One of the most comfortable beach chairs we've ever tested, this lounger includes a host of amenities like face and arm holes and a lumbar pillow.

It takes a bit to get the hang of adjusting the recline position.

If you want lounging on the beach to be as comfortable as possible, meet your new favorite chair. The Ostrich Deluxe 3-N-1 has adjustable foot and backrests, a face hole for even tanning and convenient reading, storage pockets, cup holder, and a lumbar pillow. While adjusting the back — which can lie completely flat, by the way — takes some getting used to, we credit this chair for endless hours of beachside bliss.

Travel + Leisure / Lizz Leonard

Coyuchi Mediterranean Organic Towel

It's spacious and incredibly soft.

It's not technically sand-repellent, but shaking sand off isn't difficult.

If you want a luxurious beach experience , these Turkish towels are an absolute must-have. We were immediately impressed by its soft feel, and even after putting it through the ringer, the durable towel looks good as new when it comes out of the washing machine. It's even light enough to travel with so you never have to go without a premium way to dry off.

Travel & Leisure / Anna Popp

Best Umbrella

Beachbub all-in-one beach umbrella.

It's wind tested up to 44 miles per hour, thanks to a sand-based anchoring system around its pole.

The canopy doesn't tilt.

Shade is crucial for a long beach day, but umbrellas have an unfortunate reputation for blowing over. This umbrella, however, has a feature to combat wind gusts — a sand anchor. The anchor is a tarp that you fill with sand and wrap around the pole, creating a heavy weight that stabilizes the umbrella. It was easy for us to set up, and it nailed it's most important job: protecting us from the hot sun.

Travel + Leisure / Sarah Naftzger

Best Backpack Cooler

Igloo pro snapdown backpack.

It can be carried in multiple ways, including as a tote.

It's more practical than it is chic.

This is a durable backpack cooler that can handle multiple trips without breaking, leaking, or losing its cool — you can toss up to 42 cans into the bag, and they'll remain chilled for hours. We're particularly fond of its roll-top opening, which makes it easy to load and unload the bag so you can spend more time taking in the beauty of the beach .

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Best Wheeled Cooler

Igloo 70 qt premium trailmate wheeled rolling cooler.

It's easy to roll through the sand.

It's pretty pricey, though the cost is reasonable when you consider its extra-large capacity and ultra-long cooling abilities.

Thanks to oversize wheels with treads and a high ground clearance, this cooler can handle all sorts of terrain, from sand to gravel paths to dirt roads. When you're taking it to the beach, you can fill it up with up to 112 cans. Toss in some ice, and your cans will stay cool for up to four days. It’s also loaded with features like an umbrella holder and butler tray.

Travel + Leisure / Henry Wortock

Best Flip-flops

Clarks breeze sea flip flop.

They're supportive and adjustable for the perfect fit.

They're a bit heavy.

This shoe's adjustable velcro strap puts an end to blisters. It also has a nicely cushioned footbed, thick sole, and plenty of traction for comfortable walks to the beach and beyond.

Best Snorkel Set

Cressi adult snorkel set.

This compact set is easy to pack.

The fins only come in two sizes, but are adjustable.

Commerce Editor and PADI-certified diver Taylor Fox has taken this snorkel set all over the world from Greece to the Bahamas to Indonesia. It includes a mask, short fins, and a snorkel — in other words, the three essential items you need for snorkeling. The mask is made from tempered glass with a hypoallergenic silicone skirt, while the snorkel has a "dry" design that prevents water from getting in the top. As for the fins, they only come in two sizes, but they're open-back with an adjustable strap. Fox suggests you might want to get better-fitting fins for a long day of snorkeling or for frequent adventurers, but for a casual outing, these do the trick.

Best Sunglasses for Women

Eleventh hour essential polarized sunglasses.

Eleventh Hour

They're a perfect mix of stylish and comfortable.

The frames are on the larger side.

With a subtle cat-eye shape, weightless feel, and glare-reducing lenses, these sunglasses are your ticket to all-day comfort and style at the beach. We tested them in multiple lens and frame colors and found that every combination offers top-tier UV protection. When it comes to comfort, the arms and bridge apply just enough pressure to feel secure without causing irritation.

Travel + Leisure / Alessandra Amodio

Best Sunglasses for Men

Raen aren polarized sunglasses.

These lightweight sunglasses are comfortable to wear for hours.

The frames are on the smaller side.

Raen's polarized sunglasses are equally sophisticated and effective at keeping your eyes comfortable in the bright sun. You won't find any annoying pressure points caused by their sturdy arms, and they're durable enough to survive even the rowdiest of beach games .

Travel + Leisure / Chris Abell

Best Beach Game

Spikeball game set.

Gameplay can be adjusted to suit the group of players.

If you're playing by the rules, you'll need four players.

I love a good lazy beach day, but when I'm at the beach with an active group, this is the game I like to have on hand. Spikeball is a cross between volleyball and four square — the official rules have two teams of two spiking the ball onto a center net, attempting to thwart the other team's return. But you can really adapt the game to your liking, whether that's attempting to keep a rally going for as long as possible to changing the number of players. Best of all, it breaks down and packs up into a bag for easy transport (or you can even buy a branded Spikeball backpack for the kit!)

Best Sun Hat

Buff booney hat.

It's UPF 50 certified against UV rays.

It's more practical than fashion-forward.

Long gone are my sun-worshiping days — I'm now all about keeping my skin protected. And for me, that means donning a hat while I'm at the beach. Buff's Booney Hat hits the mark for me for four reasons. One, it's rated UPF 50. Two, it's ventilated to keep my head cool. Three, it has a chin strap so it doesn't blow away. And four, it folds into a tiny pocket in its own interior, making it ultra-packable. (I am still sore about a non-packable sun hat I accidentally left behind in a ferry terminal more than a decade ago, so knowing this folds down to fit into my bag is a great feature.) Sure, it's definitely got a more outdoorsy look than a fashion-forward one, but that suits me just fine.

Best Rash Guard for Women

Roxy whole hearted long sleeve.

It's made from recycled jersey fabric.

It's very branded with the logo and company name.

Rash guards aren't just for surfers. If you plan on swimming or snorkeling, rash guards like this one can protect you from the sun, from sharp coral, and even jellyfish stings. This one is made from recycled jersey fabric and has a UPF 50 rating for solid sun protection.

Best Rash Guard for Men

O'neill long sleeve rash guard.

It has minimal seams to reduce irritation.

It's form-fitting.

This quick-dry rash guard has a UPF 50+ rating to protect your skin while you're doing any sort of outdoor water activity . Though this is a form-fitting shirt, it does have a four-way stretch for the ultimate freedom of movement. We also appreciate that the branding is somewhat subtle.

Best Women's Sun Hoodie

Backcountry tahoe 2 sun hoodie.

Backcountry

It's moisture-wicking.

It's a relaxed fit.

It might seem counterintuitive to wear a hoodie when you're at the beach, but this isn't your classic cold-weather hoodie — it's a lightweight sun hoodie designed to protect your skin from rays. It has a UPF 50+ rating, and you can use the hood and thumb holes to ensure you're covering as much skin as possible.

Best Men's Sun Hoodie

Rei co-op sahara shade hoodie - men's.

It has an antimicrobial treatment to prevent the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

It has the weight of a T-shirt.

This super-soft hoodie is comfortable to be worn regularly, but it has some features designed for active use: It has a UPF 50+ rating, an antimicrobial treatment to reduce odors, and moisture-wicking and quick-drying tendencies. Wear it during your beach day for skin protection — or if you're feeling slightly chilly as the sun goes down.

Best Water Bottle

Yeti rambler 36 oz water bottle.

Dick's Sporting Goods

The chug cap is perfect for keeping sand and bug out of your beverage.

It doesn't fit in most cup holders.

When I want a drink to stay cold all day long — and I need a hefty amount of hydration throughout the day — I immediately go for my Yeti Rambler. The insulation on this large water bottle is top-tier, keeping my drink perfectly icy. But the real feature that seals the deal for me is the chug cap. While you can unscrew the entire lid to load up the bottle with your drink of choice and plenty of ice, the chug cap allows you to enjoy the drink without fear of spilling ice all over your face. (Yes, I've been there.) The only downside is the water bottle doesn't fit in most cup holders, but at the beach, I just leave it in the sand.

Best Sand Cup Holder

Home queen beach cup holder.

They keep your cups sand-free.

They can be knocked over pretty easily.

Love or hate the sand, you're going to have to deal with it at the beach. And these cup holders are the perfect way to put that sand to work in your favor. Simply stick them into the sand, and you have a place to hold your drink — there's even a separate compartment for your keys or phone!

Best Metal Detector

Garrett at pro metal detector.

It's a solid tool for beginners to learn the art of metal detecting.

This is a lower-end model, and it's still a costly piece of beach gear.

You never know what's buried in the sand, which is why you might want to invest in a metal detector for some next-level beachcombing. This is a solid one for beginners who are ready to take metal detecting seriously, but be forewarned that buying a metal detector is not a budget-friendly act.

Best Sand Toys

Click n' play sand toy set.

 Amazon

The toys come in a mesh carrying bag.

The minimum recommended age for use is 3 years old.

For some classic sand toy action, this kit comes with all the essentials, from numerous molds to shovels, rakes, sifters, a bucket, and even a watering can. They're all stored in a mesh carrying bag, which makes it easy to shake out sand when you're ready to leave the beach. You can even hose down the toys when they're in the back for a quick rinse.

Best Portable Blender

Blendjet blendjet 2.

It really is compact in size.

It's single-serve.

Fancy a blended drink at the beach? We love the BlendJet for blending on the go — despite its compact size, it's powerful enough to perfectly blend up drinks wherever you go. The blender is single-serve, though, so it's best to have a few of them if you're traveling with a group. That said, it can handle up to 15 blends on a single charge, so you can share. We also like the compact size of the blender for storage at home. Oh, and did we mention it comes in dozens of fun colors and patterns?

Best Beach Tote

Fjällräven kånken totepack.

It has a zip top and three different carrying styles.

It has a fairly small capacity of 14 liters.

I have to admit, I'm not much of a tote carrier — I find they usually slip off my shoulders. But I do recognize the convenience of a tote at times, particularly at the beach. That's why I love the Fjällräven Kånken Totepack, which has three different handle configurations for easy carrying: there are handles, a shoulder strap, and backpack straps. But for me, the most important element of a beach tote is a zippered main compartment, as I hate getting sand in my bag. And yes, the Kånken Totepack has that, too. It's also water resistant, which is ideal for a beach trip.

Best Dry Bag

Rux waterproof 25l bag.

It has a wide mouth for easy packing.

To make it fully waterproof, you'll need to use the roll-top.

Here's the thing about most waterproof bags — they're often a somewhat cylindrical shape with a roll-top. I personally find those a little difficult to use from an organization perspective, since you have to dig through to get to your items. And that's why I love the Rux Waterproof Bag as a wide-mouthed alternative. This bag is more like a traditional beach tote in shape, but it is fully waterproof (and comes with a lifetime guarantee) when you seal it up with its roll top. Alternatively, you could also carry it as a standard tote without the roll top, which is great for stashing things quickly and easily. Plus, this is a heavy-duty, highly durable bag that works for rugged adventures just as much as it does a leisurely day on the beach.

Best Beach Blanket

Tesalate sand-free beach blanket.

Sand doesn't stick to this blanket.

It only fits two people, so isn't great for families or group trips.

This beach blanket is serious about getting the job done. First and foremost, it's thin and lightweight yet absorbent — it does an excellent job of drying you off and drying out quickly afterward. But it also repels sand, which makes it my top pick as a beach blanket. I'm also a fan of its packability (and its numerous color options), even in its beach blanket size, which is twice the size of a standard towel. But if you're traveling with a group, you might find it a tad small.

Best Folding Table

Portal compact folding camping table.

It's low to the ground for compatibility with most beach chairs.

It has a small surface area.

Keep snacks, drinks, and playing cards out of the sand with this small folding table that's perfect for use at the beach. It only has 6 inches of clearance, which works well when you're sitting in low-to-the-ground beach chairs. And it doesn't just fold flat, but rather stacks into itself so it can fit into a carrying case.

Best Waterproof Phone Pouch

Pelican waterproof floating phone pouch.

The pouch floats.

It can be a little tricky to use your phone through the plastic.

Most phones are water-resistant these days, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should keep them submerged for extended periods of time. For genuine waterproofing, I use this Pelican phone pouch, which also floats. (Ask me about the time I saw someone drop their phone into the ocean, and you'll learn why floating is now at the top of my mind.) Overall, I find the pouch pretty easy to use, though it helps to have longer nails to open the fasteners that keep the pouch shut. While you can your touchscreen through the plastic, it does feel a bit clunky. I have, however, taken fairly good photos through the plastic window over the lenses.

Best Waterproof Camera

Gopro hero12 black.

It's ideal for snorkeling and swimming.

The battery life isn't stellar.

When I got my first GoPro, I found I never used it — I didn't find it particularly user friendly and didn't take the time to learn. Years later, I now have the GoPro Hero12, and I've stepped up my game (and it really wasn't as hard to learn as I thought it was). For me, GoPro is ideal for swimming and snorkeling, particularly when paired with accessories like the floating hand grip and the high-vis case. That way I don't have to worry about it sinking if I accidentally let go while in the water. I find that my GoPro is generally better at video than still photography, at least when it comes to my photography tastes, but I do love that you have options to shoot both. And because the camera is waterproof on its own, that makes it perfect for beach or pool use.

Best Power Bank

Goal zero venture 75 portable charger power bank.

It's waterproof and dustproof (a.k.a. sandproof).

It's slow to charge up between uses.

Toss this portable charger in your beach bag and you'll never have to worry about your phone running out of juice. (It can also be used for portable speakers with USB chargers!) What stands out about this specific charger is that it has an IP67 rating, which means it's both waterproof and dustproof.

Best Refreshing Wipes

Sea to summit wilderness wipes.

They're compostable.

They're fragrance-free.

Beach days are, more often than not, a little sweaty or salty at some point or another. When you need to clean up, use these gentle wipes to feel refreshed. They're infused with aloe and vitamin E to soothe and moisturize your skin — something you'll probably need after a day in the sun.

Beau Jardin Folding Beach Wagon

It folds up easily for transportation and storage, and it can traverse all kinds of terrain with its durable wheels.

There are no wheel brakes.

Able to carry up to 300 pounds of goods, this heavy-duty wagon isn't actually heavy at all — it's extremely lightweight yet quite durable. During our beach wagon testing , we loved its rugged wheels that handle everything from cobblestones to sand, as well as the ease of its set-up and take-down. (Yes, it's collapsible!) The spacious build allows us to bring all our oceanside essentials along without an ounce of hassle, and features like mesh cup holders and easy-to-clean fabric make using it even more of, well, a day at the beach.

Tips for Packing for a Beach Day

Think about sun protection.

Perhaps the most important thing to do at the beach is protect yourself from the sun. UV rays are harmful to the skin, so you should always apply sunscreen regularly, both to your face and to your body. It's best to use a lotion for your base layer of sunscreen, then you can top up with sprays throughout the day. But if you go swimming, you'll probably want to consider reapplying the lotion more regularly. It's also a good idea to have some form of shade while you're at the beach, which could be in the form of a sun hat, a beach umbrella, or a full tent setup.

Stay hydrated

Another crucial element of staying comfortable and safe at the beach is to rehydrate throughout long days in the sun. It's usually hot when you're at the beach, and your body will likely lose water quickly — even more so if you're drinking alcohol. Always bring plenty of water for each person in your group, using coolers or water bottles to keep your beverages cold. It might not hurt to have a few electrolyte packets on hand, too, as you lose electrolytes when you sweat.

Opt for waterproof items

If there's a beach, there's water. And unfortunately, many items we take with us to the beach don't mix well with water. If you can, opt for waterproof gear like waterproof speakers or waterproof cameras. And for anything that isn't waterproof, make sure you have a waterproof bag on hand to protect it.

Depending on the age of your kids, they may enjoy simple beach toys like shovels and pails or beach games like Spikeball. Beyond entertainment, provide your kids with ample shade, too, in case they overheat or would like to enjoy reading a book without breaking a sweat. And, of course, please don't forget sunscreen and water.

There's no limit to the amount of time you can spend at a beach — that is, of course, unless the beach closes at a specific time. If you plan on being out all day, be sure you're prepared with food, water, and sun protection, as you need to keep yourself energized, hydrated, and protected against harmful UV rays.

I don't love getting sandy at the beach, but unfortunately sand is a reality at most beaches, unless you're at a pebble beach. Keep in mind that sand really sticks when it's wet, so the dryer you stay, the less sand you'll collect. One method to help is to apply sunscreen before going to the beach, so it won't be wet by the time you reach the sand. You should also use a sand-free towel or beach blanket to keep you as separated from the sand as possible. If you end up sandy, you can use baby powder to help rid yourself of those pesky grains — sprinkle some on, and dust yourself off.

To avoid bringing sand home with you, you have a few options. First, make sure all your bags can be zipped, so sand doesn't get inside them. Second, rinse everything off after exiting the beach but before getting in your car. Many beaches have outdoor showers for this purpose, but if yours doesn't, you might consider bringing a portable shower along. And third, line the trunk of your car with a mat or blanket to catch all the sand.

Stefanie Waldek is a freelance travel writer with nearly a decade of experience. She grew up in New Jersey, and yes, she went down to the shore every summer. She’s since been to beaches on all seven continents (though her packing list for Antarctica is slightly different than this list), so she’s perfected the art of packing for a beach day. For this article, she used her own product recommendations, as well as recommendations from T+L editors and product testers.
