England to tour Japan in 2024 in a historic Test match

by Matthew Wood   Thursday 22 June 2023

The match will take place on June 22 with the venue yet to be announced

England will be heading to Japan next year to lock horns with the Brave Blossoms in what would be the first Test match between the two sides in the country.

The game has been scheduled to be played on 22nd June, 2024 with the venue yet to be confirmed.

England had already toured Japan on two occasions in 1971 and 1979 for a bilateral clash but the games did not have a Test match status. There were also scheduled to take on the Brave Blossoms in a two-match Test series in 2020 which got cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"We are delighted to announce England will play its first ever Test match against the Brave Blossoms in Japan," RFU CEO Bill Sweeney said. This is a landmark occasion for our two rugby nations.

"After hosting Japan twice at Twickenham Stadium in recent years, we're eager to continue building our strong relationship with the JRFU. We have a lot of respect for Japanese rugby, and I know there will be mutual excitement between fans from both countries for this fixture."

The last time England went to Japan was during the 2019 Rugby World Cup where they went on to reach the final before losing to the Springboks.

"We are delighted to welcome England to Japan next year for this historic test match and to have the opportunity to test ourselves against one of the world's best teams, Masato Tsuchida, JRFU President, said.

"The JRFU and Japanese rugby fans have great respect for English rugby and recognise England as the birthplace of our great sport.

"We fondly remember England's performances at the World Cup in 2019, especially their incredible semi-final victory in Yokohama. English fans made a fantastic contribution to the atmosphere of the tournament, making up the largest contingent of visiting international fans.

"They left a wonderfully positive impression on the Japanese public, and we look forward to welcoming the team and English fans back to Japan and renewing the great rugby connection between our two nations."

Both England and Japan are grouped in Pool D for the upcoming Rugby World Cup scheduled later this year with Nice holding their clash on 17th September.

Most things in Japan, including food and transport, are surprisingly inexpensive, but due to it being fairly overpopulated, accommodation is generally rather expensive. However, as the capital of Japan, it offers something for all tastes and budgets. Visitors can stay in some of the world’s most luxurious and expensive suites, or simply in a cheap capsule hotel.

Average weather in June

Japan v england reviews & tips.

What a spectacle. The atmosphere was amazing. Stade de France is a wonderful stadium and the seats great. Loved every minute

This was our first ever rugby game and we had a fantastic time! Seeing the All Blacks was recommended by 2 friends and it was a thrill to see the best team in the world. We flew all the way from the US and came to Dunedin just to see the game, although we also love the town and your beautiful country. The stadium was amazing, the seats were wonderful, the fans were incredible, the game was beyond exciting! My husband and I couldn’t have asked for anything more! I think I may be an even bigger rugby fan than he is after attending this match.

FA Cup - Semi Final - Coventry City v Manchester United

Man United's Rashford, McTominay doubts for Sheffield United game

Manchester United could be without forward Marcus Rashford and midfielder Scott McTominay through injury when they take on bottom-side Sheffield United at Old Trafford, manager Erik ten Hag said on the eve of Wednesday's Premier League game.

Two right-handers expected to be leaders of their respective starting rotations this season will seek to continue impressive runs when Luis Severino and the visiting New York Mets square off against Logan Webb and the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night.

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol figured his slumping offense was ready to break out at any point.

Internationals: England set to tour New Zealand in July 2024 – report

Steve Borthwick's first tour as England head coach will be to New Zealand, according to reports, while Ireland return to South Africa. England are set to face the All Blacks in a Test series in July 2024 after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

Steve Borthwick’s first tour as England head coach will be to New Zealand, according to reports, while Ireland are set to return to South Africa.

England are poised to face the All Blacks in a Test series in July 2024 after the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

2024 July internationals

Due to the Rugby World Cup , there will be no traditional July tours next year, but the Times reports that Borthwick will face the challenging task of battling the All Blacks in New Zealand in 2024.

Borthwick takes charge of his first Six Nations campaign next year before four warm-up matches ahead of the Rugby World Cup. After the 2024 Six Nations, a trip to the land of the long white cloud follows.

England’s last tour to New Zealand was back in 2014 when Stuart Lancaster coached the side to a 3-0 series defeat.

Prior to that, England lost both their Tests against the All Blacks in 2008 but claimed a 15-13 win over New Zealand ahead of the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

The July internationals in 2024 could consist of just two Tests, according to the newspaper, in order to lessen the load on the players after the Rugby World Cup.

While England head to New Zealand, Australia are set to host Wales in a two-Test series with an option of a third match against the Wallabies or an emerging nation from the area.

South Africa is set to host Ireland for the first time since 2016, when a then-Joe Schmidt-coached side defeated the Springboks at home for the first time.

The report adds that France will head to Argentina that July while Italy will head to North America to face the United States and Canada. Finally, Scotland are set to play in the Pacific Islands, where they will likely front up against any of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.

Nations Championship

After the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour, it is reported that the Nations Championship will come into play which will see the traditional tours come to an end.

If instigated, Test teams will face multiple nations across July and November in a league format rather than a touring one.
