By Evan Minsker

Weens Gene and Dean Ween

As of 2024, Ween have been a band for 40 years. (They briefly disbanded in 2012, but were already back together by 2016.) To mark the occasion, they’ve announced a series of shows. As they put it : “Ween will be painting the town brown all year long.” The dates across the American South begin with a run of shows in April; they’ll get back on the road for a run of West Coast shows in August. Find Ween’s itinerary below.

Although Ween never seemed to make it into the mainstream with their wild and wacky music, they garnered a large cult fan base with their catchy rock tunes mixed with their fun antics.

Like other musicians that adopted their band name as pseudonyms such as the Ramones, the main members of Ween also did the same thing. Dean Ween and Gene Ween have a great chemistry together that allows them to inspire each other to make interesting and experimental music. Ween has been known to mix various genres into their sound such as punk, country, funk, and psychedelic music. Gene Ween is the lead singer of the band and manipulates his voice in absurd ways to get interesting sounds. Ween has the ability to blast out heavy metal songs and then immediately start playing acoustic guitars while singing in a style similar to Simon and Garfunkel. The band also incorporates synthesizers into their music to occasionally emulate some psychedelic sounds.

Ween is highly energetic live. Gene Ween often runs around the stage with the microphone in his hand, bellowing his lyrics out to the audience. Dean Ween is moving all around stage and rocking out to his heavy guitar riffs. The band usually has their signature logo of a spiked hair boy displayed in the background. Their light show is also magnificent, conveying great displays of psychedelic lights. Although Ween is known to play some wild music like the psychedelic, rockabilly sounding “I’ll Be Your Jonny On The Spot”, they also play beautiful, intricate tunes such as “The Argus” that clearly conveys their talented musical abilities. Ween covers a great bit of their material during their performances and gives every ounce of energy they have in order to perform a phenomenal show.

Saw Ween in Montreal in 1999. Have to say one of the best live concerts I have ever seen. Simply amazing energy and dare I say musical virtuosity from the brothers ween and their smoking band. Played all their hits and then some, over 2 1/2 hours and literally refused to leave the stage when the club owners wanted to start their crappy Disco. In the end the plug was pulled on them but still they kept playing, absolute legends. Long Live Ween!

Ween isn't a live band: they are THE live band. If you haven't found this out by listening to their live albums, you'll find this out soon enough by seeing them perform. This is their natural habitat, freeing them to all the room to jam and joke that the band ever needed. I can't recommend them if you don't like their records, but if you do, they stand taller onstage than they ever did in your headphones.

I havent seen Gene and Dean for a LONG TIME! Since they had their troubles and solo time. This tour was amazing!!! They were able to show the kids that two old geezers could still rock n' roll!!! Artpark is an absolute OUTSTANDING VENUE! 10/10!!!!

It is definitely an experience. They play long shows and can pretty much play anything in their catalog at anytime. The band is super tight and can also spontaneously improvise. The demon god Boognish casts an approving gaze upon the spectacle.

Ween Plot 40th Anniversary Tour

Ween Plot 40th Anniversary Tour

Ween have announced its 40th-anniversary tour, slated to commence on April 19 at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre in Atlanta, followed by a string of Southern appearances in the spring and a culmination of Pacific Northwest stops to mark the tour conclusion in August.

After opening up the celebration run, the band will follow up on April 20 at the Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville, Tenn. The next night, they’ll pick up an ensuing stop at Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, Ala. After an evening away from the stage, Ween returns on April 23 at Firefly Distillery in N. Charleston, S.C.

The excision will lead the band to Rabbit Rabbit in Asheville, N.C., on April 25, followed by an evening at Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, N.C. Ween’s final show slated for the Southern region lands on April 27 at Brown’s Island in Richmond, Va.

Ween will take a considerable chunk of time away from the road before resuming their 40th-anniversary tour on the other side of the country, beginning with a two-night stand on August 2 and 3 at KettleHouse Amphitheater in Missoula, Mont. After, they’ll perform at the Spokane Pavilion in Spokane, Wash., on August 4.

The final shows will arrive on August 6 at the Paramount in Seattle, and ultimately, the closing date: August 10 at Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene, Ore. Not part of their anniversary tour, yet on the calendar, is their 30-year celebration of Chocolate and Cheese , slated for TD Pavilion at the Mann in Philadelphia.

Setlists and shows, 9/8/2023 - rare vintage setlist exhumed.

The setlist for August 13th, 1988 at City Gardens has been dug up, dunked in soapy water, carefully scrubbed with a toothbrush, pieced together with bits of wire, and hung from the ceiling in the museum that is brownbase. To contemplate such a striking exhibit is to imagine, nay, conclude that WEEN enthralled and aroused their reluctant audience with this medley of chart-topping hits, many of which were dropped from the live repertoire shortly thereafter. New songs to the database include "Duke of Denim" from The Crucial Squeegie Lip , and the anthemic dada masterpiece "Deluxe Morphine Condominium". Praise you, Baby Boognish, for this rare gem!

Features, Bug Fixes, Shit like that

4/10/2020 - bugs fixed.

Code on setlist pages that calculates Misc Stats was erroneously counting teases, incompletes and the like before averaging Shows Since Last and Shows Until Next, which resulted in those numbers being much too low. This has been fixed.

And there was a similar bug in the code that calculates Songs by Album and Songs Debuted that would not count a song that was both played and teased at the same show. This has also been fixed. Brownbase deeply regrets this lamentable oversight, but is not in a position to reimburse resulting therapy expenditures.

Gene Ween Plays First Solo Acoustic Show In 9 Years At Surprise Record Store Day Appearance [Watch]

Gene Ween (government name Aaron Freeman) surprised a hometown crowd in his adopted burgh of Seattle on Saturday when he sauntered onstage at  Royal Records for a brief solo concert. The surprise show on  Record Store Day marked Gener’s first solo acoustic performance since 2015, a time when he was going by Aaron Freeman rather than his Boognish-baptized monicker.

In addition to the significance of Gene’s first solo show in nearly a decade, Saturday’s appearance had even more meaning given that Ween was supposed to be onstage at Ascend Amphitheater in Nashville that night. The show was announced as the first leg of the band’s 40th-anniversary tour , however last month Ween canceled the seven-show swing through the Southeast . In a message to fans, guitarist  Dean Ween (born Mickey Melchiondo Jr.) wrote that he is temporarily stepping from performing live “in order to preserve my mental and spiritual well being.” The band is still due to play a seven-show run in Montana, Washington, and Oregon in August, followed by a Chocolate and Cheese 30th-anniversary concert in Philadelphia on September 27th.

So with all of that in mind, it was a joyous sight to see Gene Ween take the stage at 4:20 p.m. on 4/20, whether you were one of the lucky few in attendance or tuning in via livestream thanks to the devoted online Ween community. Eschewing any grandiose reflection on his return to solo performing, Gene offered a simple greeting and the explanation “I live here so I just drove up.”

He proceeded to offer up a nine-song set of Ween classics including the opening “Don’t Shit Where You Eat”, sea shanty “She Wanted to Leave”, singalong “Banas and Blow”, “The Mollusk”, and “Stay Forever”. The acoustic simplicity gave added beauty to White Pepper ‘s “Back to Basom” ahead of the rarity “Ooh Va La”, a song from  The Caeser Demos performed only 19 times by Ween as a unit but 46 times by Gener solo (per Brownbase ). Deaner’s absence was surely felt on the a cappela ending of “Don’t Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)”, though luckily Gene had a room full of willing participants to help shoulder the lyrical load. Finally, the half-hour set closed out with the inherent goofiness of “Push th’ Little Dasises”, with Gene forgoing the “Your Party” finale printed on his original setlist .

Saturday’s in-store appearance came in stark contrast to Gene’s last solo acoustic show on March 21st, 2015 . The most apparent differences include the fact that he was introduced as Gene Ween, rather than in 2015 when he was performing as Aaron Freeman amid Ween’s breakup from May 2012–November 2015. There’s also Gene’s physical appearance, as he has noticeably slimmed down over the past year and moreover beams with radiant positivity every time he steps onstage. The fact that Gene should return to solo performing at this time also carries heavy significance, as during the FREEMAN days Deaner, the band, and their fans allowed Aaron the time and space to work through what he was going through. Now we are all extending that same courtesy to Dean as he gets himself right. All that to say, it was more welcome now than any time in the past few years to see Ween (any Ween) back onstage.

Check out a full video of Gene Ween performing solo acoustic at Royal Records in Seattle on Saturday. Ween is currently due to return to the stage on August 2nd for a sold-out show at  KettleHouse Amphitheater . Visit the band’s website for full tour details. Get well soon, Deaner.
