Daniel O’Reilly on Newsnight

Dapper Laughs on Newsnight: ‘I did not realise that I was causing a problem’

The controversial comedian known as Dapper Laughs has used his first public appearance since the axing of a second series of his ITV2 show to claim that he was laying the “character” to rest, while describing himself as “a victim of my own mistakes” and blaming the media for much of the recent storm surrounding him.

Daniel O’Reilly, who has been accused of condoning rape and sexual violence in his Dapper Laughs comedy routines, claimed that he had been “attempting to push the boundaries” but had got carried away.

“At the moment I am trying to hold back the emotion that is attached to what it has done to my life and what the media has done to my life in the last four days,” he said in an interview on BBC Newsnight, which was met with fresh criticism on social media from those who accused him of self-pity and failing to properly apologise.

“I did not realise that I was causing that much of a problem.”

A string of dates due to be played at top venues such as the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London and the O2 Academy in Leeds have been pulled following outrage over content that derides women.

It follows questions being raised over the content of Dapper Laughs’ show after footage was made public from a gig played earlier last month which made a reference to raping women and which mentioned ITV2’s show.

During the performance at London Scala, O’Reilly said of a female audience member: “She’s gagging for a rape.”

Around 60,000 people signed a petition calling on Adam Crozier, the network’s chief executive, to pull the ITV2 show.

Although the big tour dates have been canned, according to a spokesman from the agency Coalition which says it acts as “live booking agent for Dapper Laughs”, the comedian is “still going ahead with club shows”. When asked which clubs the shows are on at, all he would say was that details are “available on the web”.

A quick trawl of bookings for the Dapper Laughs shows reveals that booking is still open for gigs in February at the Institute in Birmingham and the Ritz, Manchester.

A spokeswoman from Academy Music Group said that refunds would be available from venues for those who had bought tickets: “As a major UK venue operator we regularly host events of varying styles and content in music and comedy.

“In light of the cancellation of the second series of the Dapper Laughs ITV2 show and significant criticism, Dapper Laughs (Daniel O’Reilly) has himself apologised for any offence caused by his material, and we are aware that Dapper Laughs’ brand of comedy may not be to everyone’s taste.

“We are in discussions with the promoter of the tour, who books the venues for these live events, to carefully consider what content is suitable. It is our responsibility to seriously acknowledge any criticism and complaints received for the impact upon our venues and customers by sharing such information with all parties involved who entered into this tour in good faith, and are together proactively working towards a solution to address all comments and concerns.”

It is understood that the reason for the cancellation was not to do with sales for the events, but to do with the content.

Don't Call Me Dapper Laughs – Daniel O’Reilly Announces New Tour

Daniel O’Reilly is still boasting one of the largest, strongest, most loyal and fastest growing social media followings in the UK, his fans have grown up with him and his characters through the years. From losing it all, battling addiction and becoming a father he’s been on some rollercoaster and wants you to come for a ride with him.

Daniel  is taking any opportunities he can to correct wrong doings, "I learnt a lot about sexual harassment, sexual violence and what women have to put up with. Having daughters has educated me on how dangerous some of my content could have been, if I could turn back in time, knowing what I learnt I would have done things differently. I didn't have children. I didn't have a family and I didn't have two daughters. When I look back on it now I cringe at it, and it is embarrassing and I can see why people found it offensive,” he adds

Nearly a decade later he is now a mental health advocate and has spoken openly about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. After going through a physical and mental recovery Daniel was diagnosed with severe ADHD and began his journey through mental health. Dan set up ‘ Men And Their Emotions' (M.A.T.E) Facebook group in 2022, a safe-space online for men to talk in an anonymous, non-judgmental environment, allowing them to open up and share advice. “It’s a secure digital place where all men can ask questions, whether it is anonymously or not, share opinions, and support each other,” says Dan.

The group now boasts over 36K members and at the back of the global response from men Daniel recently launched Menace to Sobriety , a brand new podcast focusing on recovering from addiction, mental health issues and sobriety. Through the episodes, Daniel invites guests on to discuss their own experiences while sharing parts of his own journey, helping listeners to understand that they are not  alone in their battles and that there is support around them, people are here to help and there is a way out. Having amassed over 5 million followers across his social media platforms Daniel says “I’m  on a mission to help men like myself to tackle the struggle of mind demons”.

Launched only two months ago, Menace to Sobriety ’s first episode clocked over 120K views in less than a week and reached #1 on the comedy podcast, with more than 1 million downloads since it aired. Guests have included; New York Times Bestseller author Clare Pooley, Kiss 100 DJ, producer, writer & MC Majestic! TV personality Kirk Norcross, UK's #1 Unconscious Mind Therapist Robert Hisee, DJ and radio presenter Brandon Block, author of ‘Alcohol Explained’ William Porter, Master Trainer, leading expert in the field of Hypnosis, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and modern psychology Elliott Wald , with more exciting guests to come, including Pastor Mick Fleming, Scottish comedian and podcast star James English , with more names to be announced.

“ I’ve been at rock bottom and haven’t been there for my wife and kids because of my addictions. I only understood I was addicted when I tried to stop and I couldn’t. I find that speaking openly about my demons helps me see clearly and do the right thing for myself and my family. I want to help other men out there to rebuild their lives after the devastating effects of their actions by showing them there is a way out from the vicious addiction circle, a way out of shame and a way to rehabilitate yourself”.

Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 50. *In 2021 alone, there were 5,583 suicides   registered in England and Wales, with around three-quarters being males (4,129 deaths; 74.0%) *.

Comedian Daniel O'Reilly has said he will be retiring his controversial character ‘Dapper Laughs’, following a backlash over jokes he made about rape.

O’Reilly revealed that he would no longer play the character, hours after it emerged that his UK tour had been cancelled, and a day after ITV2 announced it had axed his TV programme.

"It was great at the beginning, but it has completely ruined everything for me as a comedian," he said in an interview on BBC2's Newsnight . "It's wrecked my life to a certain extent," he said later.

Appearing contrite, his beard shaved off and wearing a simple black shirt in contrast to his character's gregarious sartorial style, the comedian addressed allegations that his rape jokes are sexist and offensive.

““I don’t want to be an advocate for [rape]...I’m going to communicate to my fans that I don’t agree, this is why I’m here, I don’t agree with that,” said an obviously shaken O’Reilly.

“I’m not going to do what maybe other comedians would do and stand behind it and say "If you don’t like it switch off." I’m not going to say that," he added.

Asked “what will Dapper Laughs will do now?” he emphatically replied: “Dapper Laughs is gone”.

The comic was due to play at prestigious venues including Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London and the O2 Academy in Leeds, but yesterday afternoon, a spokesperson for Academy Music Group (AMG) confirmed all 12 dates on the tour have now been cancelled, the Mirror reported.

Dapper Laughs

This was merely a day after ITV announced that his new dating show Dapper Laughs: On the Pull would not return for a second series, after footage emerged showing him at a gig last month where he joked about raping a woman.

Some 60,000 people signed a petition calling on ITV2 to cancel the show, after Dapper Laughs said on stage at the London Scala that a woman in the audience member was “gagging for a rape.”

Speaking about the incident, a video of which emerged earlier this week, the comedian said: "I didn't think so many people would see it, to be honest. I kind of got a little bit carried away."

O'Reilly tried to explain that he didn't advocate rape and feels it should be obvious that he doesn't agree with his character's point of view."I'm taking the mick out of what I think men think," he said.

He agreed with presenter Emily Maitlis that it was "wrong" his comedy might influence others to enact sexual violence. "I didn't see it as me that was saying it. It was my character, because it was popular," he said.

Speaking of how the furore had ruined his life and career O'Reilly said he was a "victim" of his own mistakes. O'Reilly said even his family had spoken to him critically about Dapper Laughs and he said he had "no desire" to continue with the character.

Don't call me Dapper Laughs! Daniel O’Reilly Announces 2024 Brand New Stand-Up Comedy Tour With Midlands Dates

dapper laughs tour chatham

Talking about the new show he unveils; " With ‘Out Of Character’ I bring the laughs as I look back on the mischief, the mistakes and the madness of my life and career so far. I was a right k***head back then. I can't change the things that I spoke about when I was younger. I was an immature lad and Dapper Laughs was a satire of lad culture, that image was taken too far and it could very much have influenced people in the wrong way”.

The reality of being canceled is shame and suffering, Daniel was able to heal and learn and he is taking any opportunities he can to correct wrong doings, "I learnt a lot about sexual harassment, sexual violence and what women have to put up with.

A far cry from 2014 when he shot to fame as Dapper Laughs on the back of his single ‘Proper Moist’ , following his success, he embarked on successful sold-out comedy tours, while his comedy DVD became one of HMV ’s Top 10-selling DVDs for Christmas 2015, Daniel has performed both  international and UK stand up-shows, including his sold-out one-night show, ‘Good Vibes Only’ at London’s Troxy and his most recent show at Indigo at the O2, in June 2022.

Nearly a decade later, the content creator has turned his life around as he is now a mental health advocate and has spoken openly about his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. After going through a physical and mental recovery Daniel was diagnosed with severe ADHD and began his journey through mental health. Everything You Need To Know About Dapper Laughs, The UK Vine Star With His Own TV Show

Daniel O'Reilly, aka Dapper Laughs, is the first UK Vine star to break through to the mainstream, with a forthcoming ITV show. But where does O'Reilly start and his laddish, sexist alter ego end? This is full of NSFW language.

Patrick Smith

BuzzFeed News Reporter, UK

This is Dapper Laughs. He makes Vines about how big his penis is and how women can't resist him. Also, somehow, he's he's just been given his own TV show.

Dapper is the alter ego of Daniel O'Reilly, a comedian from Clapham, south London . He's the epitome of Britain's lad culture: the leering, always-up-for-it, banterrifc swagger of young men on a night out – the kind who use the phrase "Oi oi!" and shout sexual advances at women (but don't have the confidence to seduce anyone).

He's the first British Vine star to break out of the medium and find mainstream success.

Which is surprising, given the NSFW nature of what he does. In his Vines, he's either asking women for sex, telling followers how to get rid of one-night stands the next day, advising women how to give better blow jobs, or just generally acting like a walking hard-on.

He likes to post "six-second sex secrets" about what girls really like. Dapper's catchphrase is "proper moist" – a phrase meant to describe how turned on women are by him.

He vines about how annoying it is when your one-night stand won't leave in the morning., then there are the blow job tips., but whatever anyone thinks of him, dapper is a very modern media phenomenon..

All these things are about Dapper are true:

– He has more than half a million followers on Vine, as well as a million likes for his Facebook page and 300,000 Twitter followers .

– He has released a novelty song, " Proper Moist ", . It went in at No. 15 in the UK singles chart, with 18,000 downloads in one week.

– He has the same management company as ex-Westlife singer Brian McFadden, 84 World. It's co-run by Dan Parker, who spent eight years looking after pop stars' careers at Simon Cowell 's Syco Entertainment.

– His stand-up tours have included numerous sell-out shows, including six sold-out gigs in Manchester and London in October. He has, obviously, played in Kavos.

– He plays the comedy tent at the V Festival this weekend.

Who is O'Reilly? He's originally from Woking in Surrey, and spent some years performing on cruise ships. These are early publicity shots from his professional showbiz profile.

His biog says: "I’m a presenter / actor / comedian / model, most of my initial experience has been on cruise ships where I perfected the art of presenting cheesy game shows and performing in my own stand up comedy show 'the life of Reilly'.

"I have done professional modelling and acting in a movie, I enjoy stand up performing and writing. I’m an out going “cheeky cockney chappie” type, very comical and playful, professional and quick witted."

His profile also mentions that he attended Brooklands Performing Arts School from 2000 to 2002 and has done warm-up gigs for Paul Daniels, among others, and appeared in a short film.

He may well be a word-of-mouth, social-media success story, but his roots are in traditional showbiz much more than people may think.

As this Vine illustrates, he's come a long way since then.

The live shows are essentially extended versions of his Vines: stories about sexual conquests, the problems of having a "big dick" and so on.

And to top it all, Dapper is headed for the mainstream. He's hosting a new show on ITV2 called On the Pull .

In the press release , ITV seems terrifically pleased with itself to have captured an up-and-coming talent with such an rogueish edge.

Kate Maddigan, ITV's head of comedy commissioning, says: "Dapper Laughs is brilliant new talent so I'm excited to bring him and his risqué brand of humour to ITV2."

Chris Graves, executive producer at production company Big Minded, says: "Dapper's a naughty little rascal with a bodacious approach to pulling! We've watched him explode online and are delighted to bring him to the ITV2 audience."

Dapper is what TV producers are desperately seeking: a charismatic talent (in the eyes of his fans) with a ready-made fanbase who sticks two fingers up at taste and decency. This makes him ideal for ITV2, which targets the 20–35 market.

In his earlier Vines, he seems to be working as an estate agent in Clapham, and his colleagues are often featured as extras.

This, his first vine, was uploaded on 3 july 2013. his posts have gotten more slick and noticeably less outrageously offensive since then., for examples, older skits of his include: "just show her your penis. if she cries, she's just playing hard to get.", "get your gash out then.".

Dapper is fond of the term "gash" and even coined the phrase "gashtag".

"Girls have periods. I call that 'blow job week'. What you need to do is get four girlfriends – then it's four weeks of blowies."

Three months ago he repeated a line from forrest gump to two young people in brixton, south london, who weren't impressed., this song includes the line: "if she's looking at me and playing with her hair, by the end of the night she'll need a wheelchair.".

{ "id": 3601662 } I've been getting into trouble since I was a kid. When someone gives me a slap now it doesn't faze me. I think the worst that can happen is that I'm going to get a punch. It's not really that bad and for the comedy, I love it. I've been knocked about a few times doing Vines. But I've never been slapped by a bird! So yeah I've had a couple of punches… I've always been the one with the big mouth.I done a Vine in Brixton a little while ago and there were four or five geezas standing there, they were like heavies and I was like 'Hi, is this the book club?', and one of 'em chinned me. Like in pubs and that when I'm trying to do Vines at night. But you know what, it's all part of the game. It makes it interesting.

In 2014 he started to do Vines featuring famous people, including Louis Walsh, filmmaker and actor Noel Clarke, Ashley Cole, and Hollywood star Terry Crews .

And danny dyer, his spiritual lad cousin., at his worst, he's a boorish sex pest hiding under the thin ironic veil of his character. but at his best he can be quite funny, and has natural comic timing., here, he gives a beer to a london marathon runner., occasionally his vines give a glimpse behind the laddish facade, showing the insecurity that seems to be lurking just beneath his grotesque alter ego., he makes some valid observations about british "lad" culture., and how men can exaggerate their sexual exploits., he has his supporters, but not everyone is a fan..

This was Radio Times ' brutal summation of the Dapper Laughs phenomenon.

He has responded to the charge of his Vines being sexist with this one, where he says: "From the bottom of my heart they're about comedy and not about getting girls moist." Although he says this with his arse out.

Or as he says in the caption: "My Vines are about creativity, comedy, expression, freedom, improvisation, not getting girls #moist."

There's no doubt that O'Reilly sees Dapper Laughs as an exaggerated version of himself and that he justifies everything he does in the name name of comedy. Whether he truly believes he is a sexual legend and that to ask people for sex in the street is acceptable remains to be seen.

Dapper / O'Reilly declined to be interviewed for this article and didn't answer questions about accusations of sexism. His agent told us that he's busy making the new TV show and also performing at V festival this weekend.

But it doesn't really matter what critics think – he's proven he can build an audience without the kind of critical support, and some would say hard work, that many comedians rely on.

His fans see Dapper as a loveable rogue who pushes the boundaries of what's acceptable – like a homemade Leigh Francis, who has for more than a decade played the lethario character Keith Lemon in Celebrity Juice , which feels tired and outdated in comparison.

He's a "lad" that attracts young women to his shows (his management told us the gender split in his followers is 50:50) and makes people laugh by saying out loud the kind of thing they would only say in front of their best friends on a boozy night out.

In a sense, this is the subculture of Vine breaking free and being let loose on an unsuspecting mainstream live and TV audience. But in another this is mainstream entertainment borrowing from the "lad" subculture that has seen The LAD Bible grow to 3.4 million Facebook fans and stag dos become a multi-million-pound international industry.

Dapper Laughs exists because a TV executive or a marketing guru could not have invented him.

We originally said that the line from Forrest Gump was from a black character, but in the film it's said by Forrest Gump, who is white.
