Aura Skypool Arrow

This is the planet's highest 360-degree infinity pool, perched 200 meters atop The Palm Tower. Aura Skypool offers not only uninterrupted views of the emirate, but also a unique pool day experience. From 50 floors up, the sweeping views of The Palm, the Burj Al Arab, and the gulf beyond are an incredible way to see Dubai from above and alter your perspective. Tickets cost from about $46 per person for one of three sessions, and are best pre-purchased online .

Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai

Jumeirah Mosque Arrow

As the only mosque in Dubai that's open to non-Muslim visitors, the Jumeirah Mosque is popular with a range of travelers—it's also the most photographed. Easily one of the most beautiful in the emirate, it's crafted entirely from white stone in the medieval Fatimid style and particularly breathtaking at dusk. Visitors are allowed in six days a week (Fridays are for prayer), and tours are led by knowledgable guides who make the experience.

woman scuba diving

Deep Dive Dubai Arrow

This is the world's deepest pool with a depth of 60 meters. It boasts a sunken city for diving enthusiasts to explore and holds 14 million liters of water. Tailored entirely to water lovers, deep diving is for those with certifications only, while snorkeling on the surface and scuba-diving up to 12 meters can be undertaken by anyone over the age of 10. Given Deep Dive Dubai also acts as the region’s largest underwater film studio, packed with 56 cameras and the ability to create different moods, it is definitely a must-try experience. Tickets are required and can be pre-purchased or bought online.

Hatta Dome Park Dubai

Hatta Dome Park Arrow

Ideally positioned a walkable distance from the Hatta Wadi Hub, this is a desert glamping experience that immerses guests in nature, offering them dome-tented accommodation, incredible mountain views, and an abundance of outdoor activities at their doorsteps. Hatta is buzzing with nature lovers and active travelers seeking refuge from the city, and geared up to explore the mountain range. These luxe tents offer comfort and adventure in equal doses. Each has its own terrace, and there are fire pits, barbecues, and food vans just a short distance away. Stylishly furnished in desert-inspired tones, the dome suites have a minimalistic chic design and serve up not only starry evenings, but also panoramic views of the picturesque Hatta mountain range that surrounds them. Despite the reasonably remote location, each room has Wi-Fi and can comfortably sleep two adults and three children (under the age of 14).

Maresa Manara

Camel Racing Dubai

Al Marmoom Camel Race Track Arrow

A popular heritage destination, Al Marmoom draws camel racing enthusiasts of all stripes, local and otherwise. A day at the camel races is an experience that is nicely representative of Middle Eastern culture, one that dates back to the 7th century. The grandstands are often filled with camel owners, trainers, and handlers, and most seats offer good views of the action. Remember that races start early—between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.—and that commentary and announcements are made in Arabic.

Boat Ferris Wheel Water sunset

Ain Dubai Arrow

Officially the world's largest observation wheel, Ain Dubai is 75 meters taller than the London Eye. Towering over Bluewaters Island, the wheel affords sweeping views from 250 meters in the air. Not only is it visible from so many of Dubai's vantage points, this attraction appeals to just about everyone—schools, businesses, families, tourists, and locals alike. Rides on the structure are ticketed, with passes sold at the venue or online .

spice Souk dubai

Dubai Spice Souk Arrow

Dubai's sprawling spice market is arguably the most entertaining of all the city's souks. It's bustling, with intoxicating sights and smells. Many of the vendors sell the same ingredients—Persian dried limes, saffron, barberries, rose hips, and traditional Middle Eastern spice mixes. Saffron, while still pricey, is more affordable here than elsewhere in Dubai. Part of a complex that features three Jumeirah hotels and an adjoining waterway, the souk has stalls selling everything from the spices, to handmade lanterns, clothes, souvenirs, and everything in between. There are also two-dozen restaurants, indoor and out, not to mention some of the most spectacular views of the world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel. It’s free to enter, but parking and abra-style water taxis cost extra.

Dubai Fountain show

The Dubai Fountain Arrow

The world's tallest fountain puts the ones in Vegas to shame. Multiple fountain shows are scheduled every day, shooting 22,000 gallons of water up 500 feet in the air within the 30-acre Burj Lake. Plus, a new floating viewing platform means you can get much closer to the action than before. Even better, it's free. If you visit the Dubai Mall , you'll likely see the fountains while you're there, so pause for a moment and enjoy the show.

Hot Air Balloon Dubai

Flying with Falcons by Balloon Adventures Dubai Arrow

In this private adventure experience, the only other person in your balloon is the pilot, who is an expert balloonist and falcon handler. Guests are picked up from their hotels and driven out into the desert. The aerial views of the desert are some of the most spectacular you'll see. Not only is the rolling landscape incredible but it is possible to see Oryx and camels strolling the desert below. This tour is ideal for a special occasion with a loved one or for those looking to experience the culture in a totally different way. Bookings are required.

Global Village Dubai

Global Village Arrow

Dubai's massive Global Village is essentially a theme park for all ages, though it's popular with families as the rides and attractions are kid-friendly. Open Late-October to mid-April, it features concerts, rides, dining, and attractions from around the world. It's on the outskirts of Dubai, so don't think you can pack it into a city-centric day, but if you have time and are interested in some global shopping and entertainment, it's worth a visit.

man in glass and mirrored room. reflections

Sky Views Dubai Arrow

High above Downtown Dubai, 219 meters up, Sky Views serves up a series of adrenaline-inducing one-of-a-kind experiences. Like so many of the experiences offered in Dubai, this incredible attraction is not for the faint of heart. Tread the 25-meter glass-bottom podium that connects the Address Sky View's twin 50-story dual towers; ride the outdoor glass slide; or tackle the Edge Walk, which is exactly as it sounds. Tickets are required but you can buy them online or at the venue.

The Perfume House Al Shindagha Museum Dubai

Al Shindagha Museum: Perfume House Arrow

Positioned on the Dubai Creek within the recently renovated Al Shindagha neighborhood (once the traditional center of the emirate), the Perfume House offers the opportunity to travel back in time and discover the ages-old methods of Arabic perfume-making. You'll learn about the region’s perfume-trading route and explore the traditional oils and ingredients used to make local scents (including oud, saffron, and specific roses).

Kite Beach Dubai

Kite Beach Arrow

Like a Miami beach with its wide stretch of sand, aquamarine water, beach chaises, and enough activities to make you feel like sunbathing isn't quite enough, Kite Beach is for beach lovers. Join a game of volleyball, give kite-surfing a try, or take a run around the soft running track—when it's not 106 degrees out.

Aqua Venture Waterpark Dubai

Aquaventure Waterpark Arrow

Now considered the world’s largest waterpark thanks to its recent extension, the venue has expanded by a third. Trident Tower, its newest arm, features the largest kids-only waterparks in the Middle East—Splashers Lagoon and Splashers Cove. Aquaventure contains more than 30 slides and attractions, including the emirates' longest lazy river, some thrilling rides (including the Leap of Faith and Poseidon's Retreat), and a private beach. There are also record-breaking waterslides to get the adrenaline pumping; Splashers Park and the Lazy River for families; and opportunities that encourage up-close-and-personal interactions with stingrays, dolphins, and sea lions.

Legoland Dubai

Legoland Dubai Arrow

Legos come to life at Legoland Dubai (sister to others across the world, including in Florida), where 60 interactive rides and 15,000 Lego models entrance the young and young-at-heart. Aimed at families with children between the ages of 2 and 12, the theme park was created from 60 million Legos and encompasses six lands, indoor and out. And now there is a Legoland Hotel that allows families to really immerse themselves in Lego for a weekend or overnight stay. In the heat of summer, the outdoor attractions can be a little too much to bear, but the indoor ones are just as good—and they're air-conditioned.

Skydive Dubai

Skydive Dubai Arrow

If free-falling over Dubai at 120 miles per hour sounds like your idea of a good time, Skydive Dubai has you covered. Beginners are welcome to jump in tandem with the company's experienced guides, but licensed divers can take the plunge solo. A tandem flight from Skydive Dubai's location on The Palm costs nearly $600—but it's worth it if you're a thrill-seeker who's not afraid of heights.

Dubai Mall

The Dubai Mall Arrow

As the largest mall in the world, the Dubai Mall draws in almost 100 million visitors a year. It's easy to get lost—there are more than 1,200 shops, after all—but a great place to beat the Dubai heat and ogle at the luxury stores. The place draws in more tourists from around the world than both New York City and Los Angeles so it's safe to say, everyone comes here.

Xline Dubai

XLine Dubai Marina Arrow

Fly belly-down across highways, skyscrapers, and swimming pools through the city of Dubai with XLine Dubai, one of the longest, steepest, and fastest urban zip lines in the world. From a height of 560 feet with speeds up to 50 miles per hour, riders soar from the Jumeirah Beach Residence to Dubai Marina, passing once-in-a-lifetime views along the way. There's even an option to ride tandem with friends.

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood Dubai

Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood Arrow

This quaint neighborhood offers a glimpse into what Dubai was like before the Emirates were formed in 1971. Traditional buildings crafted from stone, palm wood, gypsum, and teak line the twisted alleys and pathways—history and architecture buffs will love getting lost here. The neighborhood is a quiet retreat from the traffic and skyscrapers of the city, and the labyrinth of lanes make this place feel like you're in a secluded village.

Dubai Creek

Abra Ride Across Dubai Creek Arrow

Riding an abra, or traditional wooden boat, is one of the most low-key ways to get a feel for life in Dubai. The boats gather on either side of Dubai Creek—in Deira or Bur Dubai—and can carry about 20 people. Many locals use the boats to get across the creek quickly and to avoid traffic, but you'll also see lots of tourists, especially at dusk. Given that it's quick and cheap, an abra ride is a must if you plan on spending any time at all in Old Dubai or visiting the QE2 .

Al Seef Dubai

Al Seef Arrow

From its location within the emirate's cultural epicenter, Al Seef marries the city’s heritage with contemporary offerings. The 1.1-mile precinct that hugs the Dubai Creek is split into two areas: one dedicated to the past and another to the future. Meander through the charming laneways, stop and have a coffee or a meal at one of the many restaurants and cafes, or simply sit and watch the activity on the creek from one of the tranquil public spaces.

Mall of the Emirates ski dubai

Ski Dubai Arrow

In the middle of a mall in the desert, the world's third-largest indoor ski slope is a sight to behold. A daily lift ticket will run you about $138 (excluding equipment rentals), while a Snow Daycation pass, which primarily provides access to the non-skiing parts of the mountain like tubing, costs $75 per person, and you should plan to get there early. The place is filled with families with kids, most of whom are taking part in various rides, penguin visits and the Snow Cinema instead of skiing. If you're here to shred, there are two runs and a dedicated freestyle area (but Vail this is not).

Burj Khalifa Dubai

At the Top, Burj Khalifa Arrow

The world's tallest building is, unsurprisingly, visible from almost everywhere in Dubai. Taking in the site is thrilling enough from the street, but you can also visit the top of the 160-story behemoth—brace yourself for the thrill of the high-speed elevators, followed by complete awe the moment you step onto the observation deck. Buy tickets online in advance for a specific time slot. Most first-time visitors to Dubai go to the top.

Etihad Museum

Etihad Museum Arrow

This ultra-modern museum offers a comprehensive look at the formation of the seven Emirates that make up the UAE. It draws a diverse crowd of UAE nationals and history-buff tourists. The museum lies on the site where the country's unification was signed in 1971. The Etihad Museum isn't overwhelming in size or content. Even non-museum lovers will find the exhibitions interesting and crucial to a well-rounded UAE visit.

Dinner in the Sky Dubai

Dinner in the Sky Arrow

Dinner in the Sky Dubai is no ordinary restaurant—even pulling up a seat at the table requires that you clip a seatbelt. The experience takes place nearly 165 feet in the air, at a table that rotates ever so slowly over the course of an hour. If you can stomach the altitude, you're in for impressive views of the Gulf—and maybe one of the most unusual dining experiences on the planet. Artful Dining by Le Meridien Mina Seyahi and The Westin Dubai are responsible for the menu, which ranges from burrata salads to Middle Eastern mezzes. It's ideal for a romantic evening or surprise celebration with a first date, long-time partner, or best friend.

Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates  is the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East and boasts a 400m slope with a fall of over 60m – making it home to the world's first ever indoor black diamond run. There's also an indoor chairlift with a café located halfway up the slopes, serving as the perfect pit stop for delicious hot chocolate in a truly unique location.

Dubai. Just the name evokes thoughts of futuristic architecture, endless deserts, and opulent luxury.

  • Dubai boasts a stunning juxtaposition of futuristic marvels and historic charm.
  • From the world’s tallest skyscraper to golden sand dunes, the experiences are unparalleled.
  • Dive in for the ultimate guide to making the most of your Dubai trip .

Why Dubai Captivates Travelers Worldwide

According to the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, a staggering 16.73 million tourists visited in 2019.

It’s not just about the luxury shopping or the desert safaris, though they’re incredible. It’s the spirit of the city, a blend of the old and the new, that truly captivates.

The Towering Majesty: Burj Khalifa

Rising from the heart of Dubai like a silver needle piercing the sky, the Burj Khalifa stands as an emblem of human tenacity and vision.

Holding the record as the world’s tallest structure, this colossus reaches a vertiginous height of 828 meters , dwarfing every other man-made edifice on Earth. Visitors venturing to its observation decks on the 124th and 148th floors are rewarded with panoramic vistas that are nothing short of ethereal.

On a clear day, the sweeping views extend far into the horizon, giving a bird’s eye perspective of the ever-evolving metropolis below.

But the Burj Khalifa isn’t just about height. It embodies the essence of Dubai – a city that dreams big and stops at nothing to realize those aspirations.

The tower’s shimmering facade, resembling a lattice of diamonds at sunset, mirrors the audacity and glamour of the city it calls home.

For travelers, it’s more than just a tick on their bucket list; it’s an experience, a realization of what humanity can achieve when imagination meets ambition. Indeed, the Burj Khalifa is not merely a building; it’s a testament to the limitless possibilities of the human spirit.

The Desert’s Song: A World Beyond the Skyscrapers

As Sarah Khan, travel writer for The New York Times, aptly put it:

“Dubai is… a city that’s shaped by a futuristic vision, yet rooted in a rich past. It’s a place where you can ride a camel in the desert, explore spice markets and gold souks, and eat cuisines from around the world, all within a day.”

Beyond the glitz and glamor of its soaring skyscrapers, Dubai offers a mosaic of experiences that beckon the traveler to dive deeper. The echoing calls to prayer, the scent of fragrant oud wafting through the air, and the intricate tapestries of traditional Emirati life are as integral to Dubai’s fabric as its contemporary marvels.

Experience the serene beauty of the deserts . It’s not just sand; it’s a landscape that tells a story, from the time when Dubai was just a small fishing village. The desert whispers tales of Bedouin tribes, of ancient trade routes, and of the spirit of resilience that transformed this arid landscape into a global hub.

Venture out on a moonlit night, and you might just hear the rhythmic beats of traditional drums and see the fluid movements of the Tanoura dancers, painting a picture of a culture that’s as vibrant today as it was centuries ago.

Dive Deeper: Unconventional Dubai Delights

Culinary wonders.

Dubai is a veritable melting pot of global flavors, a testament to its cosmopolitan flair. Begin your gastronomic journey savoring Emirati delicacies under the starlit desert sky.

Relish the aromatic Al Harees, cooked in clay pots and traditionally served during festivals, or the succulent Lamb Ouzi, a lavish dish typically reserved for grand celebrations. But Dubai’s culinary landscape doesn’t stop at local delights.

At Atlantis, The Palm, dine at Ossiano for an underwater experience, with exotic marine life swimming by as you savor sumptuous seafood.

From high-end restaurants with celebrity chefs at the helm to humble street food stalls churning out mouth-watering Shawarmas, every meal in Dubai is an exploration in itself.

Art Galleries in Al Fahidi District

The winding lanes of Al Fahidi District are a cultural treasure trove.

Whitewashed walls house numerous art galleries that showcase the city’s burgeoning artistic talent.

Majlis Gallery, for instance, offers a peak into traditional Middle Eastern art, while the XVA Gallery delves into contemporary pieces that challenge and intrigue.

The district is a testament to how Dubai respects and nurtures its rich history while embracing modernity with open arms.

Secret Beaches

While Dubai is famed for its glitzy waterfront resorts, there’s a side to its coastline that remains unsung.

These are the serene, lesser-known stretches of sandy bliss, untouched by the footprints of mass tourism.

Locals cherish these hidden havens, and they’re hesitant to share their secrets. But here’s a tip: strike up a conversation with Kevin Erickson if you happen to bump into him.

With a little persuasion and a shared love for sun, sand, and surf, he might just whisper the coordinates of his cherished beach spot, away from the bustling crowds—a piece of unspoiled paradise in a city of marvels.

Getting Around: Tips from Kevin Erickson

Dubai’s public transportation is top-notch, but consider renting a car if you want to explore outside the city.

Remember, Friday mornings are quiet since it’s the local weekend, making it perfect for sightseeing.

A Personal Conclusion

This desert jewel, once a humble trading post, has metamorphosed into a beacon of modernity and luxury, a testament to what vision, ambition, and determination can achieve. It’s easy to be swayed by its glittering skyline and opulent shopping centers, but the heart of Dubai pulses in its old neighborhoods, its bustling souks, and the tales of its inhabitants.

There’s a harmony here, a balance between the ancient and the ultra-modern. Where else can you find robot jockeys racing camels in the morning and attend a world-class opera in the evening? Where the echoes of age-old Bedouin chants seamlessly blend with the beats of international DJs?

The intricacies and nuances of this city are what make it extraordinary. It’s a place that challenges perceptions, shatters expectations, and invites you to experience a mosaic of cultures, traditions, and innovations. As you wander through its streets, sail along its creek, or soar above its skyscrapers , you begin to grasp the true essence of Dubai.

For Kevin Erickson, and indeed many of us, Dubai is a reminder of the limitless boundaries of human creativity and the timeless allure of history.

It’s more than just a stopover or a vacation spot; it’s a journey through time, an adventure that leaves an indelible mark on the soul. And like all great tales, it beckons you to return, to uncover another layer, another story, in its ever-evolving narrative.

Is Dubai safe for American tourists?

Absolutely! Dubai is one of the safest cities globally, with a very low crime rate.

What’s the best time to visit Dubai?

While Dubai is a year-round destination, the cooler months from November to March are most popular.

Do I need to dress conservatively in Dubai?

It’s respectful to dress modestly in public areas. However, at beaches, pools, or clubs, regular western attire is acceptable.

How many days do I need to explore Dubai?

A week is ideal, but even in 3-4 days, you can cover many major attractions.

Is English spoken widely in Dubai?

Yes, English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas and businesses.

Kevin, that was an incredibly insightful read, just like all of your previous work. 💡You really captured the complexity of the topic – I daresay you have a knack for breaking intricacies down. 🧩

Do you think the butterfly effect applies in this context too, as far as repercussions go? 🦋

I’ve been grappling from the other side of the perspective, and I now feel more enlightened. A potter’s wheel I once worked on spinning off-center made me realize how swift reactions to system disturbances are vital. The chaos needs a skilled hand to regain balance quickly. Has a similar concrete experience shaped your views?

Cheers, till next. Always a treat diving into your perspective! 🚀

What Dubai Taught Me & 10 Things You Should Experience There

(Versiòn en castellano)

Hot as hell.

That’s how it felt once I stepped out of the airport with 2 boxes of duty-free beer and the bag that had been traveling with me for a few months already. My friend was there to pick me up and I was planning to stay at his place for most of my stay so I hadn’t really looked up anything as I usually do before hitting a destination for the first time. Therefore I had no idea of how public transportation worked, nor that I was interested at that point. It was 2 AM and I was just ready to hit the sack.

Of course 10 hours later the heat was way worse. And it wasn’t even Summer yet! That fact alone quickly made me realize that I would never be able to live in Dubai. So you won’t ever witness this city on my list of places I would move to in a heartbeat .

Luckily, 8 thrilling days and 3 months later the memories that arise are much nicer and richer than just the scalding weather forecast for late April in Dubai.

Skipping the hotter hours, and trying to put it into simple words, I had the time of my life there. Seriously fun times that took me into numerous and fairly diverse city explorations. Here’re my most cherished moments from that trip. The ones that I would repeat right now hands down. And the same ones I would recommend you had a look into if a Dubai experience and the United Arab Emirates are on your list.

1. Realizing that everything I had watched and read about Dubai was true.

Dubai, like every big metropolis, has two faces. There’s the one that everyone knows about. People are pretty. Cars are huge. Buildings are massive. Malls are ubiquitous. Capitalism rules.

dubai tourism experiences

That immediately brings us to talk about the other side of the city. It is a metropolis under construction at one of the highest paces I ever witnessed. Traffic is intense. Everywhere you look, there are cranes and workers – sadly many times in dubious work conditions.

What’s it like to live in Dubai? It depends! As you can see, it can differ a lot.

dubai tourism experiences

2. Dubai is absolutely stunning at night

And one of your best bets to witness this is to head to a skyscraper’s top floor at sunset. I chose the colossal Burj Khalifa (829.8 m, the tallest building in the world these days!) to admire the skyline from its At The Top observation deck , snap tons of pictures with my beloved wide-angle lens before I crashed it in South Africa a couple of weeks later (oops!), become a privileged observer of the Mall of Dubai fountain show and rub shoulders with the busy crowd that had the same idea as I did.

After waiting for about half an hour and testing my patience skills, I finally took over a precious ‘first row kinda of’ spot. I left the premises feeling accomplished and with my SD card full.

As much as I love nature, buildings will never cease to amaze me. One of the reasons why I picked Architecture as my Major!

dubai tourism experiences

3. Alcohol is expensive – and forbidden in many places – and that against every preconception is a great thing!

– Could we have a look at the wine menu?

Alcohol can be bought and consumed in many places in Dubai – and expats with licenses can even drink in at home – since it is a myth that the city is a dry emirate, but in many others, this would be a highly inappropriate question indeed.

I spent 24 hours in  Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana , a five-star hotel next to the Souks and Dubai Creek where alcohol has no place. During a whole day, I didn’t feel like leaving the premises and so I got to experience many of its special features without a single drop of booze. Yay!

– An exclusive dinner at its Shayan restaurant , where I tried Persian cuisine’s meat kebabs and other small dishes for the first time in my life. Notable design with many private rooms to host small and big parties. Excellent service, food, and mocktails. I will be back!

– An outstanding full-body massage in Zen , the hotel’s phenomenal Spa, which made me forget the rest of the day on a whim.

– Breakfast and lunch in Liwan , an all-day dining restaurant with so many international food choices that you’d need a whole month to try them all.

– My out of this world premium suite with a king size bed, 2 bathrooms (the main one with a luxurious bathtub), a living room that could host a party of 30 and unbelievable dazzling views over Dubai’s Creek, the iconic skyscrapers, and Burj Khalifa.

Although it was really peaceful and quiet, I had so much trouble falling asleep because of the excitement, since I couldn’t stop going from one side to the other picturing Dubai at night while feeling like Scarlett in Lost in Translation peeking out of the oversized windows and watching planes taking off every 2 to 5 minutes right in front of my room (not hearing them at all!).

I mean, what would you do if you could enjoy this suite for a night?

dubai tourism experiences

4. Brunch in Dubai is taken seriously

Actually, the good life can be experienced in so many ways. Take, for instance, the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach .

This hotel’s privileged location makes it for the perfect spot to evade the city madness and enter a peaceful oasis in the middle of the chaos. I visited it for a Japanese themed Dubai brunch in its Sea Fu restaurant and then toured around the facilities. That only made me want to go back madly. From its rooftop terrace overlooking both Dubai’s skyline and the lush gardens cramped with pools by the sea to its sumptuous indoors salons with live piano music and upscale Spa, it’s already on my list for my upcoming visits to the city.

dubai tourism experiences

5. There’s no better way to enjoy Dubai’s Marina than from a boat

Little I knew what I was getting into when I accepted an invitation to join a  Dubai Marina’s Yellow Boats tour around the Marina, the Palm and the renowned Burj Al Arab building among other well-known Dubai landmarks.

What I thought it was going to be a tranquil jaunt in an inflatable boat turned out into a thrilling ride I wasn’t ready to take in just then.

Therefore, I’d recommend you leave all your valuables home and get ready to experience this hands-free. Since I had no idea, my laptop, DLSR, and lenses were with me all the time and I couldn’t stop thinking about how much harm the crazy speed could make them. Fortunately, I left the boat 2 hours later with all my gadgets unscathed.

Apart from that, being a spectator of how the city transitions from day to night from the sea was a worthwhile experience I wouldn’t mind to repeat anytime.

My experience in Dubai got only better from then on.

dubai tourism experiences

6. The United Arab Emirates might be the most organized, clean, polite and safe country in the world.

Conservative but showcasing state-of-the-art features, spotless and immaculate, where everything seems to work just fine and you never feel insecure, that is how the Emirates and especially Dubai have been conceived.

You can walk around with the most expensive gadgets anytime of the day or night and just forget that something could happen to you. Critical info for girls as well, since no one will touch you or try to harm you in any way. Punishments are just too strict!

And that is just awesome. Because thinking that if there’re no sketchy alleys, crime and weird things going on travel makes no sense, is for idiots.

dubai tourism experiences

7. A stone throw away from Dubai there’s a major jewel: Abu Dhabi

And its Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque .

I won’t compare it to Agra’s Taj Mahal because the two are awe-inspiring paradigmatic buildings but to me, both of them are quintessential places you can’t afford to miss even when they are insanely crowded.

Again, lacking preparation I didn’t know that even fully covered I wouldn’t be able to enter it. Long trousers, a long blouse, and a proper scarf only took me to the changing room before entering the mosque grounds. From there on I had to dress in an  abaya  (traditional robe) and a  shayla  (headscarf) on top of all the clothes I was already using.

I won’t lie to you. It was hot and I barely could move while trying to keep everything in place and not show my hair as the shayla would keep falling down. It felt everything but comfy or appropriate in the beginning, but as I walked inside and saw every other girl in there dressed all in black as I was, I soon got used and forgot about this issue.

After that, I focused on taking pics and patiently waited till the sun went down to shoot the blue hour.

Wherever you go…

dubai tourism experiences

8. Getting up at 4 AM in Dubai could mean you got lucky!

Because if you didn’t get up that early for work, chances are you have something really exciting lined up. In my case, I was headed to the nearby sand dunes (one of the good things about Dubai is that the desert is very close) for a hot air balloon ride by Ballooning AE!

I have already talked about this experience in this other article of the most exciting flight experiences I had in my life . Head there for more info and pics like these:

dubai tourism experiences

9. Snapping long exposure shots in front of Dubai Metro is seriously amusing

And unusually cheap for what’s worth. It will only set you back a few dirhams, depending on how long your journey is. Something to take into account in Dubai, where there is no such thing as cheap anything.

Just run to the front of the driverless fully automated train and get ready to enjoy the ride!

dubai tourism experiences

10. There is a lot more than Dubai to UAE. Like, for instance, Fujairah

With 7 different Emirates, UAE is one of the most fun countries there are! If I was you I’d start preparing mini escapes using Dubai as your base. Fujairah is merely 90 minutes outside the city but the landscape makes it look like a completely different country altogether.

I was invited to spend one night in the  Radisson Blu Fujairah , in Dibba, a 4-star hotel spread along 500 m of a private beach.

There you can practice all sorts of water sports such as diving, snorkeling, and wakeboarding, have a drink in the poolside bars where DJs are playing mainstream dance tunes all day long, chill and get treated in the on-site Spa O2, dine at Breeze restaurant and wake up to magnificent Arabian Sea views from your room’s terrace.

What’s not to love?

dubai tourism experiences

Disclaimer: I was invited to some of the Dubai experiences featured in this article, but the words are my own and weren’t influenced in any way by the different companies / DMO. Thanks for the following:

– At The Top Observation Deck at Burj Khalifa, as coordinated by Dubai Tourism .

–  The Yellow Boats Sightseeing Tour  in the Marina at sunset.

– 24 hours in Al Ghurair Rayhaan & Arjaan by Rotana , its restaurants, and Zen Spa.

– Brunch at The Four Seasons at Jumeirah beach .

– 24 hours at Radisson Blu Fujairah , its restaurants, and O2 Spa.

– Hot Air Balloon ride over Dubai’s desert at sunrise by Balloon Adventures Dubai .

Finally, thanks to Vijay aka FeelFreeorFly  for inviting me over. I had a blast!

Still, I can think of many other cool things to learn in Dubai and stuff I’d love to experience in Dubai. Take, for instance, skydiving, an overnight stay at Dubai’s desert and properly exploring the Creek which – shame on me! – I hadn’t enough time for during this trip.

Expect me in Dubai again soon, because I am already planning my next visit !

Have you ever been to Dubai? Are the United Arab Emirates on your list of places you’d like to visit next?

Good Article!

Wow! Amazing photography.

I am surprised how you managed all these things in a day. You are good at planning. Unfortunately, I am very lazy and take time to figure out things. :)sad

By the way, I started out my travel blog recently.

They were spread through several days 🙂 thanks for reading and good luck with your blog!

I am myself a blogger in Dubai. Your content is very authentic and pictures are high resolution. Next time when you visit do let me know I will happy to host you a few tours.

Hi Inma, thank you for an amazing post. Me and my girlfriend planing to visit Dubai as our honeymoon destination. Your blog post gave me quite a few things to do there. Love the pics too ?

Thanks so much Nimasha! Have a blast there!

Dubai is pretty nice. I went when I was in high school I believe. I need to go again.

Hahaha interesting you found a Shayan restaurant…that’s my name!

Agree! Dubai is awesome.

Your photography is absolutely awesome!! I know Dubai, not well, but I was working in Kuwait a couple of years back and my company sent me there a couple of times for visa runs. I hated it!! Shopping malls full of designer junk and motorways… Not my thing at all! I was on a ‘Spartan’ budget and did zero research… This post has opened my eyes to what I missed… Great work!!

Thanks so much Grahame! We really appreciate your comment and get where are you coming from. Thing is that Inma was pretty lucky in this Dubai exploration and could see also a very vibrant and kind of luxurious side of the city. TTYS!

I am a travel lover as well and just returned from Dubai. To tell the truth, these flights take out all energy. Mostly I hate to wait for a taxi at the airport. This time, I booked a taxi in advance from the airport to hotel. It saved me lots of nerves.

Hi Kira You’re right. Waiting in line for a taxi s*cks. Luckily this time my friend was there to pick me up. It saved me the trouble. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

Oh my god the heat! Totally agree with you, could never get used to it. I’d probably go back once more now that I’m prepared for the sensory overload and the filthy rich all around us. Everything is just so massive that you can get easily overwhelmed.

So true, it worked for me because I stayed there less than 10 days 😀

wow, amazing photos, especially the night shots! Good job. I also have been to Dubai earlier this year. I wouldn’t want to live there for a longer period but I will go back for sure. There is so much to see and experience.

Loved every single one of your points, I’m so disappointed that I didn’t get to Abu Dhabi during my time in Dubai – I spent a week there, so that should have been plenty of time since it’s so close! Guess it’s the perfect excuse to get back for a return trip!

There’s always time to come back! 🙂 Thanks for your nice words, Megan!

We’re going to Dubai next year so I really enjoyed reading your recommendations. The Four Seasons food never disappoints. Everything looks delicious. I can’t wait to see the city at night. Those are incredible photos that capture the beauty really well. What a crazy place.

Happy that the article could help you in your travel planning, Laura!

I am still waiting for Dubai to build the rotating building. They have more money than sense and the buildings are amazing. I like the time I spend in the Liwa area more than Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

WOW! I have always wanted to go to Dubai but this post just made me want to go even more. Beautiful pictures!

Glad you liked it, Bethany! Dubai had been a long time on my list as well, finally I made it happen last April. Let me know when you are headed!

Great images and a great read. Most of the entries on Dubai I’ve read so far were just a short notes from longer layovers. Your post gives a bigger picture which is an informative lesson. For example, I’ve never knew what one should see in UAE outside of Dubai. Now, that mosque looks really unique and beautiful.

Thanks so much Zofia! So happy you could have a look into it 🙂

Your photography is amazing! I love the way you put together your pictures. It really tells the story of Dubai.

Thanks Bethaney!

Hi Inma, Firstly I have to say this is the first time I am visiting your blog and already I love it. Your photography is so beautiful and after reading through this post I feel that I know more about Dubai. I’d love to go someday. My parents have been twice and disliked it the first time but really enjoyed it the second time mostly because they were a bit more relaxed. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Thanks so much! It happens all the time I guess. When you get to a new destination and feel the urge to see and do everything. Now I like to travel at a slower pace, although some days I still feel exhausted but little by little we learn! 😀

Absolutely fantastic photos. As beautiful as it is, the traffic does bother me. I thought traffic was insane in California until I drove in Dubai.

Seen that road full of cars? Yay. I feel you! Traffic is pretty intense all day long. That, added to the fact that the weather is scalding, makes it worse! haha that is why I loved Dubai Metro so much as well! Takes you places in a whim!

I love taking photos at night, but your have shown me that I really need to up my game – gorgeous! Dubai is on my list, but honestly the expense and heat have kept it low on my list. Maybe I should reconsider?

Yes you should! For night pictures, these weren’t even taken as well as I should have.. no tripod except for a couple of shots where my friend lent me hims. For instance, all the night shots from the Burj Khalifa were snapped among tons of tourists trying to see what was going on with the fountain show and stuff. Pretty stressing to be honest 😀

Dubai is on my list. .. after reading and looking at those amazing photos makes me more want to go there.

So happy to hear that. Thanks Anneklien!

Great share! You take some amazing pictures! I spent half the time just looking at them! Thanks so much for all this great information!

Your photography is amazing. I especially love the shots of the city at night. Dubai is definitely on my to do list. I fully support any place that gets behind brunch… the alcohol thing however, might take some getting used to.

Hey Mags. You are right. In the beginning I thought the alcohol thing was actually going to be a ‘thing’ but it wasn’t at all. As tourists you are never very far away from a drink if you want. I just chose not to for some hotel stays and really liked to soaking in everything else. We are so used to the ubiquitous beer than the solely thought of spending a day without one was a bit crazy haha

Wow! Amazing photography. As a keen photography myself, this highly inspires me to go to Dubai.

Plenty of things to enjoy as well! Cheers.

Obviously meant “keen photographer”.

Thanks Hugo!

Such wonderful photos. I have never read or seen so much detailed information about Dubai from any travel bloggers before. Well done!. Dubai is one of the places I want to visit so badly. We were supposed to do it this year, but our plans did not work out. Now I remember why I want to visit it so much.

Happy that you found it interesting. So glad this one is getting so much attention. I spent a well 2 days and a half crafting it. Nice to see that work paying off! 😀

The picture are really incredible, especially the night-time ones, but it does sound so frantic and crazy, not a quiet liveable place at all! Just a good place to stop by and gawp at perhaps…..

You are completely right! As I said in the beginning of the piece, I wouldn’t live there at all, anyway it is a place I’d love to visit every once in a while. I just found it terrific!

Awesome post Inma.. you have have give us a virtual private tour of Dubai through your stunning pictures….

Thanks so much Prasad! That is a real compliment coming from you 🙂 Happy that you liked it and hope to cross paths again soon!

Your photos are absolutely incredible!!! Love the shots of yourself with your camera as well. Such a unique perspective.

Thanks Anna! You know sometimes getting pics of oneself gets tricky 🙂 That’s why I took over mirrors for this one. Might keep it as a signature pic for more articles to come!

Yes! Went to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ras al Khaima and Fujairah for the first time this year!

How was Ras al Khaima? Would love to visit soon!

Certainly after reading your post & looking at your stunning photos I/we will have to check Dubai out 🙂

Hey! Thanks for stopping by. It’s been an awesome trip. Let me know if you make it there anytime soon! Would love to follow your adventures.

I'm an American who visited Dubai for the first time. Here are 11 things I wish I knew before I went.

  • When I visited Dubai for the first time, there were some things I wish I knew beforehand.
  • The weather during my stay was amazing so I think the winter season is definitely the time to visit.
  • The city is bigger than I expected so I'd recommend hiring a guide to see as much as possible.

Insider Today

I visited Dubai for the first time and loved my time there. However, there were a few things I wish I had known before I went on the trip .

Here are a few things I would've wanted to know before I went to Dubai.

Now I know the winter season is the best time to visit, mostly because of the pleasant weather.

dubai tourism experiences

Dubai has year-round sunshine but I now know the best time to visit the city is during the winter, which, according to US News , spans from November to early March.

When I went in January 2022, the temperature ranged from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit without any humidity. It was warm enough to enjoy touring and being out and about.

The temperature was also perfect when I stayed in the city and went to the desert. There was a slight breeze by the sea and marina, but nothing that required a jacket during the day. The sundresses and lightweight dresses I packed worked perfectly, but I advise bringing a jacket or long-sleeve shirts since it can get a bit chilly in the evening.

There are so many activities, you likely won't be able to do them all.

dubai tourism experiences

I didn't realize just how big Dubai was until I visited . There is an endless amount of activities, so I would suggest trying to identify your priorities before landing in the city.

Based on my experience, I recommend visiting the Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world), going on the Ain Dubai, wandering the souks, and strolling along the Jumeirah Beach Residence Walk.

At night, it's worth snagging tickets to see the La Perle show and walking around the Dubai Mall to see the fountain show and lights around the Burj Khalifa.

Dubai is filled with record-breaking attractions but also tons of history and culture.

dubai tourism experiences

Though the world's tallest building and highest observation wheel were worth seeing , don't skip the historical part of the city. Visiting Al Seef, the souks, and taking an abra (a boat) across the river were definitely highlights of the trip.

Parts of the city are extremely innovative and new but older areas showcase its history and culture. Seeing both allowed me to appreciate how the city has evolved over time.

Abu Dhabi is definitely worth a day trip and is only about an hour and a half away.

dubai tourism experiences

Though I originally planned on visiting only one of the seven emirates, the emirate of Dubai , my friends told me I had to incorporate a day trip to Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and is located in the eponymous emirate. We hired a tour guide to take us on the hour-and-a-half drive to Abu Dhabi and around the main sites.

Dubai isn't the only city with gorgeous sites and history — there are incredible places to visit nearby.

dubai tourism experiences

In Abu Dhabi, we visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Qasr Al Watan ( a working Presidential palace ), and Heritage Village.

I loved the emirate so much that I'd love to go back just to see more of it.

In addition to offering traditional Middle-Eastern food, Dubai seemed to have every other cuisine imaginable.

dubai tourism experiences

I'm allergic to sesame, so I was worried about what I'd eat on this trip, since Middle-Eastern food and Emirati cuisine use this ingredient quite often.

However, Dubai had every cuisine I could imagine. Everything from Italian food to Chinese options was available, so my choices were not limited.

Though everything we tried was delicious, the food could be pricey.

Palm Jumeirah and Dubai International Financial Centre are closer to the main attractions than some other popular areas where visitors stay.

dubai tourism experiences

Since Dubai is such a large city, I think it's best to stay close to its attractions . I selected the Four Seasons Hotel Dubai International Financial Centre because it was only a two-minute drive (or a 20-minute walk) to the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall and close to restaurants and shops.

Since it was in the center of the city, grabbing taxis and finding transportation was easy.

Many visitors also opt to stay in Palm Jumeirah, which has waterfront hotels with larger properties and private beaches. It's still close to the city but has some privacy.

Hiring a tour guide ended up being the best decision I made on my trip — and it was quite affordable.

dubai tourism experiences

I hired tour guides to maximize my time in Dubai , which was one of the best decisions I made.

We hired guides to take us around the city on our first day, as well as on our day trip to Abu Dhabi, the desert, and a nightlife tour. We made the most of our time in the city and we saw a ton.

We booked most of the guides through the hotel or by recommendations from friends and family who have visited. Each guide was relatively affordable and was accompanied by a driver.

You must bring appropriate attire for mosques and other holy sites.

dubai tourism experiences

The holy sites we visited had a dress code . Men should wear a shirt with sleeves that are at least elbow length with long trousers. In mosques, women need to wear an abaya and shayla, which covers their body and hair.

You can purchase an abaya and shayla at many tourist sites or borrow them ahead of entering. I didn't realize the mosques had a dress code, but I would have planned my outfit beforehand if I had.

Don't let your worries about sand and heat cause you to pass up a trip to the desert.

dubai tourism experiences

I typically stay away from deserts, but dune bashing — driving at varying speeds over sand dunes — in Dubai was one of my favorite activities on the trip . It was almost like riding a roller coaster on the sand and we got to see a beautiful sunset before heading back to the city.

Don't miss dune bashing if you take a trip to the emirate.

Souks are some of the best places to buy souvenirs or spices.

dubai tourism experiences

You can grab souvenirs from just about any attraction in Dubai, but I think you'll get the best prices and selection at the souks, or marketplaces.

Dubai has a multitude of open-air souks, ranging from one for gold to a market for spices, and they each sell a wide variety of items. I purchased spices, jewelry, and souvenirs from different souks and strongly believe they're worth checking out.

Streamlined Visa Procedures for Medical Treatment in the UAE

Facilitating medical treatment in the UAE for foreign patients and their families has become more accessible thanks to streamlined visa processes. As per u.ae, the UAE government’s official website, foreign patients can enter the country for treatment under the sponsorship of either a government or private hospital. The responsibility of applying for a medical treatment entry permit lies with the medical establishment, acting upon the patient’s request.

For those embarking on this journey, certain essential documents and details are required. This includes a copy of the patient’s passport, a letter from a licensed hospital explaining the purpose of the visit, and a recent bank statement to demonstrate financial security.

For patients seeking treatment in Dubai, a ‘Medical Entry Permit’ from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs Dubai (GDRFA) is necessary. There are two variations of this permit:

  • Medical Treatment Entry Permit – Single Entry: This visa permits entry within 60 days from the issue date and a 90-day stay from the entry date.
  • Medical Treatment Entry Permit – Multiple Entry: This visa follows the same 60-day validity period but allows for extensions based on a medical report indicating the need for continued treatment.

In Abu Dhabi and the Northern Emirates, patients will need to apply for a medical treatment visa through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP). Two types of permits are available:

  • Single-entry medical treatment visa
  • Multiple entry medical treatment visa

The cost of the visa varies from Dh85 to Dh100, depending on the type of visa applied for, ensuring that the UAE remains an accessible destination for medical treatment seekers.

Simplified Visa Application Process in the UAE

Applying for a visa through a travel agency in the UAE is a hassle-free process, as they readily accept documents through online channels such as email or WhatsApp. According to Joseph Lancy Dsouza, the General Manager at Dubai-based Arabian Nights Travel and Tourism, all you need is a clear passport copy and passport-sized photos. Travel agencies can apply for family visas as a group, making it a collectively approved process. Notably, children under the age of 18 are exempt from visa fees, but there might be a service charge by the travel agency.

The cost of the visa for adults in a group application can vary based on the nationality of the applicants. For instance, Indian family members may incur approximately Dh300 to Dh350 per person, while children do not bear visa fees, with processing charges ranging from Dh80 to Dh100. It’s essential to contact the agencies in advance to inquire about specific charges, as they can differ between providers.

The mandatory documents for visa applications usually include a clear passport copy and passport-sized photographs. In some cases, additional documents like birth certificates for children, marriage certificates, national IDs, bank statements, hotel reservations, and return tickets may be required. The necessity for these documents depends on factors like parental information on the passport and nationalities. The visa duration ranges from 30 to 60 days, extendable up to 120 days if needed.

Typically, the visa approval process takes approximately three to four days, but it can often be expedited for a quicker issuance, ensuring a smooth and efficient application process for travelers to the UAE.

Why Choose Dubai for Health and Wellness Tourism?

Dubai beckons as an enticing choice for health and wellness tourism, boasting a multitude of compelling reasons to make it your destination of choice. First and foremost, the city’s healthcare system is synonymous with quality, housing some of the world’s finest hospitals and clinics. Many of these institutions carry accreditation from internationally renowned bodies such as the Joint Commission International (JCI) and the Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA), assuring patients of world-class standards.

What truly sets Dubai apart is its roster of experienced and highly qualified medical professionals.
